Eatonville boys secure first win of season
The Eatonville Cruisers boys basketball team capped off their trip to Arizona with a milestone win at the Coyote Basketball Invitational, defeating Tempe Prep 48-44 to secure their first victory of the season and deliver Head Coach Josh Bennett his first career win at the helm.
The hard-fought win over Tempe Prep came after two challenging losses in the tournament. The Cruisers' resilience was on full display as they battled through momentum swings to close out the game with a decisive 7-0 run, staving off a late push by the Knights.
“This win meant a lot to our team and our coaching staff,”
Bennett said. “To come down here, compete at a high level, and finally get that first victory – it shows the progress we're making.”
Amari Samuel led the Cruisers with 16 points, scoring 12 in the second half, while Carter Taylor and Michael Stogsdill each added 7 points. Lowell McWright and Nate Goode chipped in 5 points apiece, with Goode pulling down a crucial
12 rebounds. Jeremy Osborn Jr. and Colton Herbrand rounded out the scoring with 2 points each. The win followed a pair of tough losses to open the tournament.
Eatonville's first-round matchup against Arete Prep saw the Cruisers struggle to keep pace, falling 61-48. The loss dropped them into the consolation bracket, where they faced the Fountain
Hills Falcons. Against Fountain Hills, the Cruisers jumped out to an early 9-4 lead after the first quarter. A 5-2 run extended their lead to 14-6, but a late 6-0 surge by the Falcons cut the margin to 19-15 at halftime. Eatonville maintained a narrow lead entering the fourth
Lady Cruisers battle to 3rd place in Coyote Invitational
The Eatonville Cruisers girls basketball team weathered foul trouble and a late surge by Payson High School to secure a 30-23 victory in the third-place game of the Coyote Invitational Basketball Tournament on Jan. 4. The win marked the second consecutive year the Cruisers brought home a third-place trophy from the Arizona-based tournament.
Eatonville jumped out to a commanding lead early, forcing five Payson turnovers in the first quarter and capitalizing with an 8-0 run to lead 14-5. The defensive intensity continued into the second quarter as the Cruisers held the Longhorns scoreless for nearly five minutes. By halftime, Eatonville led 25-6, fueled by 13 forced turnovers in the first half.
However, foul trouble threatened Eatonville’s grip on the game in the second half. Star guard Bailey Andersen and forward Lillian Bickford were both saddled with four fouls by the end of the third quarter, allowing Payson to chip away at the lead. Andersen fouled out with 4:53 remaining in the game, and Bickford followed shortly after at the 3:43 mark. To compound the challenges, Tia Schanbeck was sidelined with an injury suffered in the second quarter.
Despite being outscored 15-4 in the fourth quarter, the Cruisers held off the Longhorns'
comeback bid.
“The girls showed resilience,” said Eatonville head coach Deanna Andersen. “We faced adversity with foul trouble and injuries, but they fought through it. I’m incredibly proud of their perseverance.”
The path to the third-place game saw Eatonville take on tough competition. In the tournament opener, the Cruisers battled the Yuma Catholic Shamrocks in a tightly contested matchup. After trailing 12-9 at the end of the first quarter, Eatonville surged ahead with an 11-0 run to close the first half, leading 26-21 at the break.
Yuma responded with a 13-0 run in the third quarter, reclaiming the lead at 31-28. But the Cruisers, led by Bailey Andersen’s season-high 19 points in her return from a wrist injury, orchestrated an 8-0 run in the fourth to seal a 49-46 victory.
“We came out slow but settled in and played our game,” Coach Andersen said. “Morgan Liard had her best game to date and really stepped up for us.”
In the quarterfinals, Eatonville cruised to a dominant 55-26 win over Northwest Christian, with Andersen pouring in 24 points. That victory set up a semifinal showdown against the tournament host, Arizona Lutheran.
Eatonville led 32-28 entering the fourth quarter, but Arizona Lutheran mounted

Pierce County received $175.8 million in ARPA funding, and we worked very hard as a Council to invest these dollars in ways that allow the county to come out of the pandemic better than when we went in. While the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic are still felt today, and we mourn the lives lost, the work we have done to use these funds to lift up, support and invest in our county will live on far past the last four years.

Some of the biggest and longest lasting impacts are in the space of housing and homelessness, community needs and economic development.
In housing, we invested in several multi-family housing units, building and refurbishing homes, and investments in program to increase homeownership.
In homelessness, we invested millions in rental supports during the pandemic to keep people housed and landlords whole. Purchased a hotel in partnership with other jurisdictions, property and other investments in sheltering and permanent supportive housing. We stood up safe parking and mobile units like shower/ hygiene supports that could go to where our unhoused neighbors were receiving services. We also started a process to locally create a unified regional approach to homelessness, as we cannot solve this alone.
as we found that access to high-speed internet truly is a game changer for personal finances, education and even access to healthcare. We invested in and partnered with other jurisdictions to build sewer or water projects to help them increase affordable housing and their local economy. We invested heavily with our own Business Accelerator program that has helped launch over 500 new small businesses across the county. We also helped existing businesses stay solvent during challenging times through business assistance and innovation grants.
I am truly proud of the work this Council did to think about how we are leaving a lasting mark as we come out of this time in our world history. It took community partnerships, leadership from cities and towns across the county and county staff to really determine how to make some of our ideas a reality. We will see the impacts of these investments in new homeowners, new businesses, individuals and families that stayed healthy because they were fed and housed; all because of these investments. If you are curious about the dollar amounts or about who we worked with you can see that info in our ARPA Expenditure and Status report at tinyurl.com/27swv8dx (it starts on page 6 of the packet).
To me, that is exactly what I was hoping for with these funds.

Pierce County’s upcoming sewer repair project to cost up to $8 million
By Spencer Pauley The Center Square
Pierce County will soon begin construction on urgent repairs to a sewer pipe in Lakewood after a recent inspection of wastewater infrastructure.
Repairs will begin in early 2025. The project is expected to take at least six months, according to a news release, and is estimated to cost between $7 million to $8 million.
A fall video inspection identified a sewer pipe along Bridgeport Way West in the city of Lakewood in need of immediate repairs.
The reinforced concrete pipe was damaged over time by hydrogen sulfide, which is a gas present in wastewater.
In turn, Pierce County Executive Bruce Dammeier signed an emergency proclamation on Dec. 23 to enable the county to secure contractors and go through with the repairs.
The segment of pipe in need of repairs was originally scheduled for repairs or replacement in 2029.
The video inspection of the sewer pipe was added in the 2024-2025 budget in order to increase monitoring of
wastewater infrastructure. This helps plan for future preservation needs.
A sewer bypass will first be installed prior to the repairs in order to divert most of the wastewater flow and prevent further damages to the aging pipe.
Pierce County is coordinating with the cities of Lakewood and University Place on the construction work and timeline. A start date and any traffic impacts will be announced as soon as they are available.
In the meantime travelers can continue to use Bridgeport Way West.

members, who work tirelessly to ensure students have the support they need to succeed. From teachers and paraeducators to bus drivers and administrators, each team member plays a crucial role in fulfilling our Eatonville Promise: Every student will be known, valued, and supported.
2024 REFLECTIONS: GRATITUDE AND EXCELLENCE
This past year has been remarkable in so many ways. I am incredibly grateful for the time I’ve spent learning from our nearly 2,000 students. Whether visiting classrooms, attending assemblies, cheering at games, or admiring performances, I am continually amazed by their thoughtfulness, creativity, and determination. From our youngest preschooler to our graduating seniors, each student brings unique gifts to our district.
As adults, we owe it to them to provide the tools they need to thrive — academically, socially, and emotionally — so they can emerge as the leaders our world so desperately needs.
Our students’ accomplishments in 2024 showcased their dedication and talent. From record-breaking swimmers to scholar-athletes maintaining exceptional GPAs while competing, Eatonville students are raising the bar. The highlights from this fall’s athletic achievements alone are worth celebrating:
Swim: 8 swimmers to state, 3 school records broken, and a league sportsmanship award.
Cross Country: Grace Coonrod, a league champion, broke the school 5K record.
Soccer: 11 wins, league honors, and a first-year coach recognized as Coach of the Season.
Football, Volleyball, and Tennis: Countless honors, all underscoring their hard work and commitment.
These moments are a testament to the spirit and dedication of our students, families, and coaches. Congratulations, Cruisers!
HONORING OUR STAFF
Equally inspiring are our staff
One of my greatest joys as superintendent has been listening to and learning from our dedicated staff. Their passion fuels our shared mission, and I am committed to supporting their efforts every step of the way.
2025: A YEAR OF OPPORTUNITY
As we step into this new year, we have much to celebrate and even more to accomplish. January marks School Board Appreciation Month, and I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our board members for their countless hours of service and unwavering commitment to our students and community. Please join me in thanking them for their leadership.
I’m also proud of the progress we’ve made on our five-year strategic plan, shaped by the voices of nearly 1,500 students, parents, staff, and community members. This plan keeps us focused on our goals, including our Portrait of a Graduate, which ensures our students are prepared not just for graduation but for life beyond.
Finally, I want to thank our community for your steadfast support, particularly through the approval of vital levies. Your trust allows us to provide the resources our students need to succeed, and we are working hard to honor that trust every day.
Looking Ahead with Hope
As we journey through 2025, I am confident that together we can achieve great things for our students. Let us continue to pull together, staying true to our shared values and commitment to academic excellence. Thank you for being an integral part of this incredible community.
Here’s to a productive and inspiring year ahead. We are Eatonville Strong! With gratitude and hope, Superintendent Jay Brower

County brings films for seniors, caregivers
By The Tacoma Weekly
Just like caring for someone we love, movies can touch our hearts, awaken our vision, and change the way we see things. To celebrate family caregivers, Pierce County Human Services Aging and Disability Resources division is hosting a series of free films for seniors, caregivers, and care receivers. The series theme is “Laughter is the Best Medicine,” and will feature three screenings, each shown on a Saturday.
On Jan. 11, the series kicks off with the showing of “Robot and Frank,” a heartwarming story about unexpected friendships. A former jewel thief with dementia, Frank, receives a gift from his son, a robot programmed to take care of his every need. Initially reluctant to accept the robot, Frank soon finds that it may have its uses, as he introduces it to a life of crime. This PG-13 rated film stars and ensemble cast including Academy Award nominee Frank Langella and Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon.

against Tempe Prep. Eatonville trailed 14-11 after the first quarter but capitalized on turnovers to take a 23-22 lead into halftime. After trading leads in the third quarter, the Cruisers found themselves down 44-41 in the fourth before finishing the game on a 7-0 run.
“The difference in the Tempe Prep game was winning the boards and playing fundamentally sound on both ends,” Bennett said. “When Nate Goode pulls down 12 plus rebounds, we put ourselves in a good position.”
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
It is with profound sadness that we share the sudden passing of Jason Mathew Mischel, who left us far too soon on the morning of Friday, December 13. Jason succumbed to complications from his recent battle with kidney disease.
Jason was known as a kind and caring member of our small community here in Eatonville, admired for his many talents and warm spirit. Whether working on computers and IT, enjoying the serenity of fishing, playing fantasy football, or rooting passionately for his beloved Miami Dolphins, Jason brought enthusiasm and dedication to everything he did.
Above all, Jason’s heart was with his family and loved ones. His care and passion for those close to him, as well as for strangers in need, were evident in every aspect of his life. He leaves behind a legacy of love through his beloved daughter, Tacee; his father and stepmother, Dennis and Sue Mischel; his mother, Heidi Mischel; his brothers, Michael, Charlie, and Colin; and his baby sister, Kelly. Jason’s extended family—including his aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews—will deeply feel the void of his absence.
As we grieve, we also take comfort in knowing that Jason’s soul is at peace. Let his memory remain a beacon of love and kindness in our hearts and in our community. May we honor him by cherishing one another and keeping his spirit alive in the moments we share together.
With love and remembrance, February 8, 1974 - December 13, 2024

Coach Bennett also highlighted the significance of the experience for the entire basketball program. “Being down in Arizona as an entire unified program was a really cool moment of representation for our community; both boys and girls basketball had over 60 individuals who traveled to Phoenix. Those families and support systems that joined us (and those who supported from home too) are building the culture of community for Eatonville Basketball that Coach Anderson and I are striving for,” he said.
The Cruisers concluded the tournament with a 56-29 loss to Horizon Honors, a game in which they were outmatched but continued to show the competitive spirit that defined their time in Arizona.

a furious comeback, closing the game on a 13-0 run to defeat the Cruisers 46-42 and relegate them to the consolation bracket. “It was a tough loss, but the girls left it all on the court,” Andersen said. “These experiences help us grow as a team.”
The Cruisers now shift their focus back to SPSL 2A league play. They will host Franklin Pierce on Jan. 7 at 5:15 p.m. and close out the week by welcoming in Fife, also tipping off at 5:15 p.m. and then Black Hills on Saturday at 4 p.m.
Reflecting on the Arizona trip, Coach Andersen highlighted the significance of the experience.
“Overall, it was an amazing tournament and trip,” she said. “The girls are growing closer as a family and improving every game. Hearing other coaches and parents praise the team’s class and sportsmanship means everything to me as a coach.”
“This trip was exactly what our group needed,” Bennett said. “To get away from Eatonville and bond as a team both on and off the court, it gave us perspective and confidence. We learned a lot about what we are capable of. If we commit to defense and take care of the ball, we can compete with anyone.”
Eatonville will return to regular season play on Tuesday, Jan. 7, when they host Franklin Pierce at 7 p.m. They will finish out the week at home against Fife on Friday at 7 p.m.
“The kids keep accepting the challenges we set for them,” Bennett said. “We've been competitive in every game. If we keep this up, we'll start seeing more wins on the board.”
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bradley Porter, November 29, 2024, at the young age of 35. Brad was born on February 26, 1989 in Tacoma and grew up in Eatonville, WA. He grew up riding bikes around our neighborhood, building forts on our property, playing sports, swimming at Alder Lake, skateboarding with all of his buddies, fishing, cruising up in the woods & berry picking with his Dad and having girlfriends. He also really really loved going to the casino, especially with his Mom. He was always the life of the party, with a smile that was contagious. Brad had the type of personality where you never know if he was being sarcastic or serious, chances are, you thought he was just being sarcastic but he actually meant it. After he graduated from Eatonville High School in 2007, he later pursued a profession in HVAC where he was well respected. In his mid twenties he had his baby boy Bentley, he is now 10 years old. Bradley was a beloved father, son, brother and uncle. He is survived by his son Bentley, parents Donald and Patricia Porter, sisters Ashley and April, his niece Lilly and four nephews, Matthew, Tucker, John and Tate, along with numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him, but his spirit and love will never be forgotten.
Bradley’s Memorial Service will be held at the Mineral Neighborhood Christian Center in Mineral WA on January 18th, 2025 at 11 A.M. There will be refreshments provided after the memorial.
County offers volunteer opportunities
By Tacoma Weekly
Among resolutions people tend to make in the new year, a most common one is to volunteer for a good cause. Pierce County government offers multiple opportunities to do just that.
The county’s boards and commissions always need the public’s engagement in a variety of ways. These range from the Accessible Communities Advisory Committee, Aging & Disabilities Resources Advisory Board and Arts Commission to the Citizens’ Salary Commission for Elected Officials and Civil Service Commission.
For Emergency Management, there are many ways to get involved, both before and during disasters. Pierce County Emergency Management partners with agencies to help residents and businesses prepare and respond to emergencies. Volunteer for Amateur Radio Emergency Services, Citizen Corps, Search and Rescue, and more.
Pierce County Human Services embraces a large network of organizations such as Nourish Pierce County, Northwest Furniture Bank, Senior Friends at Lutheran Community Services Northwest, and United Way of Pierce County. These are just some examples of how your experience and knowledge can go a long way to help those in need.
To work with youth in the county’s Juvenile Court system, a Court Appointed Advocate is a trained volunteer who is appointed by a judge to advocate for a child, or children, in Dependency Court. A Court Appointed Advocate is an independent voice for the child’s best interests throughout the time the child is in care (usually about two years). Advocates gather information about the circumstances of the child’s case, monitors court orders, and makes recommendations to ensure that no child is lost in the system.
Pierce County Parks offers a variety of fun and rewarding volunteer opportunities. Share your expertise on the advisory boards or be a coach in youth sports programs. If you love the outdoors, parks trails and natural areas bring great ways to volunteer your services. Your skills and talents are matched with your work preference to obtain a role that satisfies you and best fulfills the mission of Pierce County Parks. Interns serve in several divisions of the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and may assist deputy prosecuting attorneys, legal assistants or victim advocates. Visit piercecountywa.gov/179/VolunteerOpportunities to learn more about these and other ways you can get involved in 2025.
FAUX PHO
by Lynda Balslev
It would be inaccurate to call this nourishing soup an authentic Vietnamese pho. The essence of pho is a daylongsimmered broth, typically made from beef or chicken bones. A handful of whole spices, such as star anise, cinnamon, cloves and coriander, mingle with the stock, infusing the soup with layers of flavor and fragrance. The broth is then ladled into deep, wide bowls filled with rice noodles and strips of beef, chicken or perhaps tofu. A slew of fresh garnishes and bowls of spicy condiments accompany the soup, ready for dipping and scattering over the steamy bowl.
It's understandable that a piping hot bowl of pho is a crave-able meal, especially on a cold winter evening. It's also predictable that cravings can strike unannounced and without mercy, inconsiderate of convenience and when you are least prepared. In these urgent moments, the solution is to improvise.
This simple soup is an easy weeknight dish that mimics a pho without the loving labor of time that would make it truly authentic. It relies on a prepared or store-bought stock simmered with a few toasted aromatics to build flavor in a quickly assembled soup. You might call it a faux pho.
For this soup, use a good-quality prepared chicken stock or bone broth. For the meat, you can cook and shred chicken meat or rely on leftovers. Don't skimp on the fresh garnishes, which are an important component of the soup: crisp bean sprouts, leafy herbs and fresh chiles, along with squirts of lime, Sriracha and hoisin provide freshness and heat to the heady broth. In pho terms, it may not be the real deal, but for an easy weeknight dinner, it's a satisfying and slurp-worthy alternative.

chopped
■ 6 cloves
■ 2 star anise
■ 1 (2-inch) stick cinnamon
■ 1 teaspoon whole coriander seeds
■ 1/2 teaspoon whole black peppercorns6 cups chicken stock
■ 1 tablespoon fish sauce
■ 1 tablespoon light brown sugar
■ 1 teaspoon kosher salt
■ 8 ounces vermicelli rice noodles
■ 2 to 3 cups shredded cooked chicken meat
■ 3 scallions, white and green parts thinly sliced
■ 1/4 cup fresh cilantro leaves
GARNISHES:
■ Sliced red or green jalapeno peppers
■ Mung bean sprouts
■ Fresh mint, cilantro, and/or Thai basil leaves and sprigs
■ Lime wedges
■ Sriracha
■ Hoisin sauce
Heat the oil in a Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the onion and ginger and saute until the onions begin to brown in spots, about 5 minutes. Add the cloves, star anise, cinnamon stick, coriander seeds and peppercorns and saute until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the stock, fish sauce, brown sugar and salt and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, partially cover the pot and simmer for 30 minutes. While the soup is simmering, cook and drain the noodles according to the package directions. Strain the soup through a fine-mesh strainer into a clean pot. Add the chicken to the soup and simmer over medium-low until warmed through, about 5 minutes. Taste the soup and adjust the seasoning if needed.
Divide the noodles between large serving bowls. Sprinkle an even amount of scallions and cilantro over the noodles. Ladle the soup into the bowls. Serve with the garnishes.

Savvy Senior: How to help a hoarding parent
Dear Savvy Senior, My dad has always been a pack rat, but since mom died a few years ago he’s become more of a hoarder. The clutter in his house has gotten out of control and I don’t know what to do. Any suggestions?
Distraught in Centerville
Dear Distraught, Unfortunately, hoarding or clutter addiction is a problem that’s become increasingly common in the U.S. It effects approximately 6 percent of Americans age 65 or older. The problem can range anywhere from moderate messiness to hoarding so severe it may be related to a mental health disorder like obsessive-compulsive disorder. Here’s what you should know, along with some tips and resources that can help you help your dad.
WHY PEOPLE HOARD
The reasons most people hoard is because they have an extreme sentimental attachment to their possessions, or they believe they might need their items at a later date. Hoarding can also be a sign that an older person is depressed, anxious or
showing early symptoms of dementia.
Common problems for seniors who live in excessive clutter are tripping, falling and breaking a bone; overlooking bills and missing medications that are hidden in the clutter; suffering from the environmental effects of mold, mildew and dust, and even living among insects and rodents.
WHAT TO DO
To help you gauge your dad’s problem, the Institute for Challenging Disorganization (ICD) offers a free “Clutter Hoarding Scale” that you can download at ChallengingDisorganization.org.
If you find that your dad has a moderate cluttering problem, there are a number of things you can do to help.
Start by having a talk with him, expressing your concern for his health and safety, and offering your assistance to help him declutter. If he takes you up on it, most professional organizers recommend decluttering in small steps. Take one room at a time or even a portion of a room at a time. This will help prevent your dad from getting overwhelmed. Before you start, designate three piles or boxes for your dad’s stuff – one pile is for items he wants to keep-and-put-away,
another is the donate pile and the last is the throwaway pile.
You and your dad will need to determine which pile his things belong in as you work. If he struggles with sentimental items that he doesn’t use, suggest he keep only one item for memory sake and donate the rest to family members who will use them.
You will also need to help him set up a system for organizing the kept items and new possessions.
FIND HELP
If you need some help with the decluttering and organizing, consider hiring a professional organizer who can come to your dad’s home to help you prioritize, organize and remove the clutter.
The National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals (NAPO.net) and the ICD (ChallengingDisorganization. org) both offer directories on their websites to help you locate a professional in your area.
If your dad has a bigger, more serious hoarding problem (if his daily functioning is impaired, or if he is having financial difficulties, health problems, or other issues) you’ll need to seek professional help.
Talk therapy and/or antidepressants can help address control issues, anxiety, depression, and other feelings that may underline hoarding tendencies, and make it easier for him to confront his disorder.
To locate help, contact Helping Elders Live Productively (H.E.L.P.). This is a free education, counseling, and referral resource that helps older adults and their families who are experiencing hoarding, by connecting them with legal services, mental health assistance and support groups. Call 310-533-1996 for a referral or visit Help4srs. org/support-services-for-seniors-who-hoard. You can also find professional help through the International OCD Foundation, which provides a hoarding center on their website at Hoarding.iocdf.org. And to get help with challenging cleanup jobs, the biggest provider is Steri-Clean, Inc. (see Hoarders.com or call 800-4627337), a hoarding cleanup company that has franchises located throughout the country.
