Playing in the Thurston County Fastpitch Association, the Bandits secured a secondplace finish in conference play before going on to dominate the conference championship tournament held June 8-9.
Their championship run culminated in an 8-4 victory over the Electric Tigers, solidifying their place as champions.

“They all did amazing!” she exclaimed.
Coach Northern highlighted the team's incredible depth, noting that “every player

the tournament. Notably, Olivia Benham delivered a stellar performance on the mound during the championship game.
The Bandits' defense was equally impressive, committing only two errors across the entire tournament.

Savvy Senior: Dreading a colonoscopy? There are alternatives
Dear Savvy Senior,
Are there any easier alternatives to a colonoscopy to screen for colon cancer? I just turned 60 and my wife keeps nagging me to get tested, but I hate the idea of drinking that laxative solution and being sedated for the procedure.
Squeamish Steven
Dear Steven,
While a colonoscopy remains the most accurate screening test for detecting colon cancer (94 percent accurate), there are other easier – although less accurate –tests available. But be aware that if the result of one of these tests are positive, you’ll still need to undergo a colonoscopy. Here’s what you should know.
SCREENING GUIDELINES
Colorectal cancer, which develops slowly over several years without causing symptoms especially in the early stages, is the second largest cancer killer in the U.S., claiming more than 50,000 Americans each year.
Colorectal cancer screening guidelines from the U.S. preventive Services Taskforce and the American Cancer Society call for most adults to get screened starting at age 45 and continuing through age 75. Earlier screenings, however, are recommended to people who have an increased risk due to

family history of colorectal cancer or polyps, or a personal history of inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis.
But despite these guidelines, and the fact that colonoscopies save an estimated 20,000 U.S. lives each year, around 40 percent of eligible people don’t get screened. Why? Because most people, like yourself, dread the laxative prep and sedation, not to mention the procedure itself.
But a colonoscopy is not your only option for screening for colon cancer. There are currently several types of FDA approved stool tests that you can take in the privacy of your own home that requires no laxative-taking/bowel-cleansing preparation. The two most accurate
that you should ask your doctor about are the:
Fecal immunochemical test (FIT): This test looks for hidden blood in your stool, which suggests polyps or even cancer. Your doctor will give you a FIT test kit to use at home. You take a small sample of stool and mail it to a lab to be analyzed. You don’t need to do any prep. The cost of this annual test is covered by private insurance and Medicare. FIT has an almost 80 percent accuracy rate for detecting colon cancer, but it detects only about 28 percent of advanced polyps that might turn into cancer.
Stool DNA test (Cologuard): This screening kit looks for hidden blood as well as altered DNA in your stool. Your doctor will order the test,
and you will receive the collection kit in the mail. You do the test at home every three years and send your stool samples to Cologuard via UPS. No special prep or change to your diet or medication schedule is required. Cologuard, which is covered by most private insurers and Medicare, detects 92 percent of colon cancers but only 42 percent of large precancerous polyps. It also may provide a false-positive, indicating that you might have cancer when you don’t.
NEW BLOOD TEST
There’s also a new experimental colon cancer blood test you should ask your doctor about called the “Shield blood test.” This new test, developed by Guardant Health, detects more than 80 percent of colon cancers early when they’re most treatable.
Guardant is currently seeking FDA approval to market the test but it’s available now as a “lab-based test” (which does not require FDA approval) but it’s currently not covered by most private insurers or Medicare. Your doctor will need to request this test, which costs $895, at BloodBasedScreening.com. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Will WA gun shops be able to comply with new regulations or be forced to close?By Carleen Johnson The Center Square
Gun store owners across Washington have one more year to figure out if they can comply with a new law that requires expensive security upgrades.
Opponents have dubbed the legislation, an FFL Killer. FFL refers to gun shops with a Federal Firearms License.
The National Rifle Association’s Institute for Legislative Action wrote, “The onerous requirements of House Bill 2118 will likely put most Washington-based FFLs out of business because of the financial burden to comply."
The new requirements include the installation of steel doors or bars on the storefront, locking up all firearms in a safe after hours, and security systems with 24-hour audio and video surveillance, along with retaining those recordings

for 90-days at a time.
Bill sponsor Rep. Amy Walen, D-Kirkland, told fellow lawmakers, “The goals are just to make sure inventory is kept safe and secure, standardized records are kept, theft or loss are timely reported, video of transactions is kept, and liability insurance is carried.”
Robert Schentrup spoke in support of the bill during a February public hearing of the House Civil Rights and
Judiciary Committee.
His 16-year-old sister Carmen Schentrup was killed in the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.
“Her death was preventable, just like the 822 Washingtonians killed by gun violence each year,” said Schentrup.
According to 2023 statistics from the Alliance for Gun Responsibility, more
than 69% of the gun deaths in WA are from suicide.
Opponents of the bill argue the burdensome regulations are intended to put gun stores out of business.
“That’s 100% the motivation, they’ve made no secret about that,” Sen. John Braun, R-Centralia, told The Center Square back in March following the bill’s passage.
Kirk Evans, president of Texas based U.S. Law Shield tells The Center Square, “Even if you have the fanciest most secure internal safe where you store your guns at night, the greatest device on the planet, it’s going to be too much," said Evans. "Every external window and door now must have the bars, metal plating, even if you have the greatest security system known to man."
He is also concerned about the new reporting requirement for owners.
“It ups the reporting requirement where you have to report a missing or stolen firearm within 24 hours," said Evans. "In the case of employee theft or something else you don’t know about, you get charged with not having reported it quickly enough and it turns into a Class C felony for the FFL dealer.”
Evans says he thinks the new law will put a lot of gun stores out of business.
“It’s gonna hurt the little guy for sure. I would say just guessing a minimum of 1020% of these stores are going to go out of business,” said Evans.
“It is by far the most extensive and easily the harshest bill I’ve seen in any state. The only remote good news is the entire bill is it doesn’t take effect until next July (2025) so folks have a chance to find out if they comply."
Beat the heat with gazpacho
by Lynda BalslevWhen the temperature soars, it helps to enjoy a meal that is cool and, well, liquid.
In other words, it's time for gazpacho. Gazpacho is a raw tomato-based soup swimming with chopped vegetables. Many versions call for blending or partially blending the soup, but I prefer to keep it chunky. You could call it a liquid salad. As salads go, it's certainly healthy, and it's also remarkably satiating, thirst-quenching and refreshing to eat -- or slurp.
The key to its flavor is a balance of sweet, spice, piquancy and heat, which creates a balanced and addictive bite. Aim for a variety of colors and satisfying crunch. Dice the vegetables in similar size so you can crowd as many as possible into one bite. Look to carrots and bell peppers for sweetness, citrus for acidity and chile peppers for a kick of heat. Make the gazpacho a few hours ahead of serving to allow the flavors to meld and any veggie juices to release.
SUMMER GAZPACHO
Active time: 15 minutes
Total time: 15 minutes, plus chilling time
Yield: Serves 4

▶ 1 quart unseasoned tomato juice
▶ 2 to 3 Early Girl or other vine-ripened tomatoes, stemmed and seeded, finely diced
▶ 1 English cucumber with skin, seeded, finely diced
▶ 1 large carrot, finely diced
▶ 1 large red bell pepper, stemmed and seeded, finely diced
▶ 1 medium poblano pepper, stemmed and seeded, finely diced
▶ 1/2 medium red onion, finely chopped
▶ 1 jalapeno pepper, stemmed and seeded, minced
▶ 1 large garlic clove, minced
▶ Juice of 1 lemon
▶ Juice of 1 lime
▶ 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
▶ 1 teaspoon ground cumin
▶ 1 teaspoon kosher salt, or to taste
▶ 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
▶ A few dashes of hot sauce
▶ 1 small handful of fresh cilantro leaves and tender stems, finely chopped
Combine all the ingredients except the cilantro in a large bowl and stir to blend. Taste for a balance of flavor and season with salt. The flavors will develop as it chills in the refrigerator. Stir it occasionally while chilling. Before serving, stir in the cilantro and taste again for seasoning.

Law banning child marriages in Washington state now in effect
By Carleen Johnson The Center SquareWashington is now the 11th state in the country to ban child marriages via a new law that went into effect on June 6 that makes it illegal for anyone under 18 to get married.
House Bill 1455, passed by the Legislature this session and signed into law by Gov. Jay Inslee in March, took effect on June 6.
Prior to the new law, Washington was one of five states with no age requirement to marry. In those other states, children of any age can be legally married with permission from a judge,
and 17-year-olds only need parental permission.
Survivors of forced child marriage gave passionate testimony during debate on the bill in Olympia during this year's legislative session.
Kate Yang from Kirkland told lawmakers she was trafficked by her own family for $6,000.
“I became the 12-year-old bride and I was raped on my wedding night,” she said. “Child marriage does exist in America.”
Survivor Sara Tasneem told lawmakers she was just 15 years old when she went to stay with her father

Nancy is survived by her brother, Arthur Green (Ann), sons, KW Iams (Gretchen) and Glenn Iams (Rae), eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren, cousins and many, many friends. one summer, who then forced her to marry a 28-year-old man.
“My dad introduced me to a man one morning, and I was told I would marry him that night,” Tasneem explained. “My mom didn’t know this was taking place, and after a spiritual wedding ceremony, my dad handed me over to my abuser and left me in his care.”
She added, “I was taken out of the country, raped and impregnated."
Tasneem told lawmakers her abuser brought her back into the country six months later.
“That’s when we were legally married, and I was six months pregnant,” said Tasneem. “My perpetrators used that marriage certificate to not be charged with any of the crimes they were committing against me.”
“It took me seven long years to finally escape my abuser and three more years

Fraidy Reiss with Unchained at Last, a group advocating to end all child marriage, testified in support of the bill.
“In many cases, these are get-outof-jail free cards for a child rapist," she said.
“Seventy to 80% of these child marriages end in divorce and these young people end up homeless," Reiss noted. "It’s also an incentive for a parent to marry off a child so they can get out of a child support obligation. Magically, once you marry off a child they are emancipated.”
An Unchained at Last study found that from 2000 to 2021, more than 5,000 minors were married in Washington. The same study showed the vast majority of recent child marriages –83% – in Washington are those between adult men and underage girls.

By TJ Martinell The Center Square AG launches confidential youth reporting systemThe Washington Attorney General’s Office has launched a 24/7 confidential youth reporting system in which young state residents under 25 years old can reach out to regarding a variety of issues, including mental health and physical safety.
Speaking at a Tuesday press conference, Attorney General Bob Ferguson described HearMeWa as "a first-ofits-kind statewide reporting system exclusively focused on the safety and well-being of young people.”
HearMeWA can help youth with a variety of challenges, including the following:
• Bullying
• Mental health struggles, such as depression or anxiety
• Suicidal thoughts
• Domestic violence
• Housing or food insecurity
• Gender identity
• Threats of violence or rumors of a school shooting
• Anything that makes life hard
Youth can contact HearMeWa by phone app, text, or a hotline. They are then contacted by trained crisis counselors operating out of the Sandy Hook Promise National Crisis Center. The center then reaches out to various local entities such as schools, counselors, social workers, nurses and “other trusted adults,” Ferguson said at the press conference. The reports are handled on the degree of urgency.”
