More than a train ride

Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad is a journey through history

Just a 15-minute drive from Eatonville, the Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad in Elbe offers a unique summer activity for locals and visitors alike.

The railroad's route originated as the Tacoma Eastern Railway in the 1890s, initially serving as a crucial transport link for Northwest forest resources. Over time, it evolved into a vital route for both freight and passenger travel between Tacoma and the Mount Rainier area. Eventually, the focus shifted to scenic tours, highlighting the natural beauty of Mount Rainier and its surroundings.

“We offer a step back in time — a train ride aboard 100-plus year-old equipment, operated just as they were originally built,” said Bethan Maher,

Executive Director of Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad.

The railway journey traverses remote landscapes, including the Nisqually River, Roundtop, and Mineral Creek, offering passengers a glimpse of nature

often inaccessible to families or non-hikers.

In addition to its regular scenic steam train trips, the railroad hosts special events

Washington

gray wolves

to remain classified as an endangered species

The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission has decided not to change the endangered species status of gray wolves in the state.

In a pair of 5-4 votes earlier this month, the commission rejected the recommendation of the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife to downlist the wolves to either "threatened" or "sensitive." Downlisting the wolves would have meant lesser penalties for poaching, as well as somewhat easier access to permits to kill wolves that attack livestock.

Ahead of the vote, Julia Smith, endangered species recovery manager at WDFW, told members of the state Fish and Wildlife Commission that the gray wolf would still be protected, even if its status were changed.

“Protective measures would remain for wolves in Washington if the proposed rule amendments are approved,” she said.

Smith told commissioners there was a 90day public comment period on the proposed change.

“During that period we received almost 14,000 submissions and almost 90% of the submissions were copies or slight variations of six form letters,” Smith said, noting most of the those were in opposition to the reclassification of wolves.

Gov. Jay Inslee urged commission members not to downlist the gray wolf status to sensitive, arguing the future impacts of climate change– such as wildfires and droughts – could threaten the animals' recovery.

Tooth Sensitivity Can Be a Real Pain in the Mouth

Enjoying a cold drink or an ice cream cone are just a couple of ways we make ourselves comfortable on hot summer days.

For a sizable portion of the population, though, indulging in ice-cold foods and beverages, or hot drinks on a cold winter day, can lead to unbearable teeth pain. Teeth sensitivity affects nearly an eighth of all Americans and can cause pain when eating or drinking. Some of the other causes of tooth sensitivity include:

• Overenthusiastic brushing

• Eating disorders

• Consuming high-acid food and drink

• Gum recession

• Smokeless or snuff tobacco

These can lead to either a loss of enamel or exposing the roots of your teeth, which can cause problems when consuming hot, cold, sweet or

throughout the year, featuring holiday rides, beverage tastings, and family-friendly activities, enhancing the unique experience.

During the summer months, the Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad also offers exclusive experiences such as RailCycle — a rail biking operation introduced last year.

“We introduced RailCycle last year — a rail biking operation aimed at offering a new experience on custom-designed rail bikes,” Maher explained.

Summer visitors can also enjoy a variety of outings, including wine, whiskey, or beer tasting trains and a weekend brunch train running through September.

“For a full day of summer fun, we recommend starting with a morning RailCycle [departs at 10 am], followed by lunch in Eatonville or Elbe, and then an afternoon train excursion at 1:15 or 3:30 p.m.,” Maher suggested. “Kids 5 and under ride free, making it a great family activity.”

The railroad has garnered acclaim worldwide, attracting enthusiastic “Rail-Fans” and outdoor enthusiasts alike. According to the organization, from January to June 2024, Western Forest Industries Museum, via RailCycle and Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad, welcomed 21,126 guests from 47 states and 16 countries across

acidic foods and drinks. By working to fix this problem, you will make eating and drinking more enjoyable and comfortable.

Treating tooth sensitivity is important not only for immediate pain relief, but also for maintaining good oral health and preventing future dental problems. Sensitivity often indicates underlying dental issues such as enamel erosion, gum recession or tooth decay. Addressing the issue can help prevent further damage to the teeth and gums and

promote better overall oral health.”

Fortunately, there are ways to prevent and treat sensitive teeth. Diagnosing tooth sensitivity starts with a visit to your dentist, who then will likely recommend trying some at-home treatment options for a month or so.

At-home treatment options include:

• Desensitizing toothpastes which include potassium salts. You’ll want to use these with a minimal amount of water and a soft-bristled toothbrush.

• Mouthwashes which contain potassium nitrate and fluoride.

• Waiting to brush your teeth at least an hour after consuming acidic food and drinks, including carbonated drinks, citrus fruits, alcoholic drinks, yogurt and dairy products.

To combat erosive agents inside of acidic food and drinks, dental professionals recommend drinking milk or water afterward or using a straw to avoid prolonged contact

Latin America, Canada, Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and the Middle East.

The Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad is more than just a train ride; it's a journey through history and nature that everyone can enjoy. Whether exploring rugged landscapes on old-fashioned train cars or joining special trips like wine

tastings or brunch trains, you'll get a special view of the Pacific Northwest's history and beauty. With its passionate volunteers and focus on staying true to the past, the railroad attracts visitors worldwide. It's a top spot for anyone who loves adventure and wants to experience the charm of Washington's breathtaking scenery.

between the beverage and your teeth.

If these simple tips don’t rid you of tooth sensitivity, your dentist may suggest office therapies such as applying potassium nitrate gel or sodium fluoride to sooth and protect sensitive areas. These are short-term solutions, however. Longer term solutions may include at-home use of a topical remineralization therapy like Tooth Mousse, or in-office procedures like dental bonding or gum surgery.

For those with continued tooth sensitivity, you’ll want to schedule a follow-up visit with your dentist and continue to use at-home therapies to help keep the pain away. It’s also important to follow oral hygiene recommendations including flossing daily and brushing at least twice a day for two minutes with a soft bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste.

increased for 15 straight years, reaching a total population of 260, according to a count conducted by WDFW and Colville tribe.

As previously reported by The Center Square, those 260 wolves are in 42 packs. Since the first breeding pack was confirmed in 2008, the gray wolf population has grown by an average of 23% every year.

Pam Lewison, director of the Center for Agriculture at the Washington Policy Center think tank, said the wolves have rebounded significantly and that farmers with livestock are living with that fact.

“You may have a newborn calf that is born in the night and disappears without a trace, or you will see part of a tail or a hoof left behind, and that is it,” Lewison told The Center Square, adding that is evidence there are likely many more livestock kills from wolves than officially recorded by the state.

WDFW pointed out that lethal removal of wolves preying on livestock had been dramatically reduced in recent years.

In 2019, WDFW lethally removed nine wolves. This was followed by three in 2020, two in 2021, six in 2022, and two in 2023 – a 64% average reduction over the four years following 2019.

Reclassifying wolves as a sensitive species would have reduced maximum poaching penalties to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine, compared to one year in prison and a $5,000 fine for poaching an endangered species.

As a sensitive species, wolves would have still been off limits to hunting or harassment. Ultimately, commission members in the majority said there were too many concerns to downlist the species at this point in time.

“The standard is the biological status of the species, which in my understanding is too uncertain to change the listing," Commissioner Melanie Rowland said.

Savvy Senior: How extreme heat affects seniors: Tips to stay safe

Dear Savvy Senior,

I work for a county health department and every summer we’re seeing more and more seniors get sick and even die from heat-related illiness. Can you write an awarness piece on the affects extreme heat has on older adults, and what they can do to guard against this summertime risk. Thanks for helping keep seniors safe!

Health Advocate

DEAR ADVOCATE,

Happy to oblige! Most people don’t realize that each year, extreme summertime heat kills more people in the U.S. than hurricanes, floods and tornadoes combined. While extreme heat can be deadly for anyone, older adults are uniquely vulnerable because of three key factors: biological changes that occur with age; higher rates of agerelated diseases; and greater use of medications that can alter the body’s response to heat.

Here’s how to gauge the risk for a heat-related illness for you or an older loved one and how to stay safe.

HOW HEAT AFFECTS SENIORS

The human body has two main mechanisms to cool itself: sweating and increasing blood flow to the skin. In older adults, both of those processes are compromised. Seniors sweat less and they have poor circulation compared with younger people.

Chronic health conditions that are more common in old age, most notably cardiovascular disease and diabetes, can also exacerbate these issues. A diseased heart isn’t able to pump as much blood, further reducing blood flow to the skin. And if the nerves become affected in people with diabetes, the body might not receive the message that it needs to start sweating.

As people age, they also stop feeling as thirsty and so they tend to drink less. In hot conditions, that can cause them to become dehydrated faster. In addition, some older adults, particularly if they have some form of dementia or cognitive decline, may not perceive temperature changes as well. As a result, they won’t respond appropriately to heat,

Kenneth E. McVittie Sr. 1948 - 2024

Kenneth E. McVittie Sr. born in 1948, in Tacoma, Washington, passed away on July 1, 2024, in Pahrump, Nevada, at the age of 76. He was preceded in death by his parents Lawrence McVittie Sr. & Florence Virginia McVittie.

Ken is survived by his loving wife and high school sweetheart of 56 years, Nancy McVittie. He was the devoted father of Kenneth E. McVittie Jr. (Kaidrin), Tammy Carroll (Larry), and Benjamin McVittie (Jessica).

A graduate of Franklin Pierce High School, Class of 1966, in Tacoma, Washington, Ken was deeply involved in his community and cherished his time as “Worshipful Master 2009-2010” of WM. H. Upton Naval & Military Lodge #206. His commitment extended to the Scottish Rite, Shriners, and York Rite, where he found camaraderie and purpose.

Ken had a passion for golfing and camping, and he cherished moments spent with family and friends. He adored his two Shih Tzus, Smokey Ann and De Bandit, who brought him joy and companionship.

In addition to his wife and children, Ken has three siblings, Lawrence McVittie Jr. (preceded in death), Steve & Rita McVittie. He was a beloved grandfather to Marlana Filannino, Josiah Filannino (preceded in death), Pierre, Savanna, and Ryder McVittie, Cody & Sierra Carroll. Ken was also blessed with several greatgrandchildren, including Prestyn McVittie, Braydin & Korbin Courter-McVittie, and a great-granddaughter due in December.

Ken had a wonderful sense of humor, he will be remembered fondly by all who knew him for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering love for his family. He will be missed by all.

both biologically (through sweating) and behaviorally (by moving to someplace cool).

Finally, certain medications many seniors take like diuretics and other high blood pressure drugs can affect people’s hydration, blood flow and even the sweat response, so be sure to ask your doctor about any medications you’re taking.

HOW TO STAY SAFE

On hot days, older adults and people with serious health conditions should limit outdoor activities like walking and gardening to the cooler mornings and evenings, take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water even if you aren’t thirsty. Listen to your body. If the activity starts to feel harder than normal, that’s a signal to stop and find a place to cool down.

Signs of dehydration or heat exhaustion include dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, flushed face, a racing heart or feeling lethargic. Low energy is especially important to watch out for in people with cognitive impairment, who may not realize how hot they are or be

able to express it.

If heat exhaustion worsens to a heatstroke, it becomes a lifethreatening emergency.

While older adults face unique challenges when it comes to heat, the ways to cool down are the same for any age. If you or a loved one start to experience any of the above symptoms, the best thing you can do is to go somewhere that has airconditioning. If AC isn’t available in the home, check if there’s a local cooling center.

In the absence of air-conditioning, water is extremely helpful in reducing the risk for heat-related injury. Rubbing an ice cube or cold compress over your skin, spraying yourself with cool water or taking a cool shower or bath can also help.

BAKED FETA WITH BLISTERED TOMATOES, PEPPERS AND OLIVES

Active time: 35 minutes

Total time: 35 minutes

Yield: Serves 4

Olive oil

▶ 1 pound cherry or grape tomatoes

▶ 1 large red bell pepper, seeded, julienned

▶ 3 garlic cloves, smashed, chopped

▶ 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper, or to taste

▶ Kosher salt

▶ Freshly ground black pepper

▶ 1/2 cup pitted Kalamata olives

▶ 2 to 3 thyme and/or oregano sprigs

▶ 8 ounces feta, cut in 1/2-inchthick blocks

▶ Finely grated lemon zest

▶ Fresh basil leaves, torn, for garnish

▶ Crusty baguette for serving

Heat the oven to 400 degrees (or prepare a grill for direct cooking over medium heat).

Combine 2 tablespoons oil and the tomatoes and peppers in

an ovenproof skillet or rimmed griddle. Cook over medium heat on the stovetop (or over direct medium heat on the grill with the lid closed) until the tomatoes begin to release their juices, 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the garlic and crushed red pepper and season with salt and black pepper. Saute for about 1 minute, then stir in the olives and thyme or oregano sprigs.

Nestle the cheese into the vegetables. Drizzle with olive oil and season with additional black pepper.

Transfer the pan to the oven (or slide the pan over indirect heat on the grill) and roast for 20 minutes. Turn on the oven broiler and roast for another 5 minutes or so to slightly char the cheese. If using a grill, increase the heat to high and grill for another 5 minutes or so to slightly char the cheese.

Remove and let cool slightly. Garnish with lemon zest and fresh basil. Serve with crusty bread.

Washington energy choice initiative officially qualifies for the November ballot

Initiative 2066 to protect energy choices like natural gas has officially qualified for the November ballot, according to the Washington Secretary of State's Office.

Backers of the initiative turned in more than 546,000 signatures earlier this month, essentially guaranteeing the measure would have more than enough valid signatures to get on the ballot.

State law required the submission of 324,516 valid signatures from registered Washington voters to qualify. That figure is based on the number of votes cast during the last gubernatorial election.

The Building Industry Association of Washington, Let's Go Washington, the

Washington Hospitality Association and other I-2066 backers celebrated the news

“When we launched this initiative with only 50 days to collect signatures, we knew the people of Washington opposed the idea of banning natural gas, but the support for this initiative shows just how strongly they feel about protecting natural gas for heating and cooking in their homes and businesses,”

BIAW Executive Vice President Greg Lane said. “Now voters have the chance to protect their natural gas and avoid costly conversions to all-electric by voting yes on I-2066 in November.”

If passed, I-2066 would prohibit the state and all local governments from banning, restricting or discouraging the use of natural gas in new or existing homes or commercial buildings.
