Eatonville stays unbeaten, dominates in Homecoming game

Despite a last-minute schedule change due to the ongoing referee shortage, which moved the Homecoming game to an earlier 4:30 p.m. kickoff, the Eatonville Cruisers showed no signs of disruption. They powered through the Foss Falcons with a commanding 45-20 victory, extending their unbeaten streak to four games.

On the first drive from scrimmage, Eatonville quarterback Cole Fowler handed the ball to Wyatt Weichsler, who bulldozed his way up the middle for an 8-yard touchdown. Eatonville’s versatile “Swing the Axe” formation paid off as Riley Hill connected with Michael Stogsdill for the two-point conversion, giving the Cruisers an

dominance

The Eatonville Cruisers girls soccer team had a commanding week, earning two shutout victories, including a dominant 6-0 win at home against Washington on Tuesday. The team followed the win with a 5-0 victory on the road at Clover Park on Thursday.

In Tuesday's home match, senior forward Haley Courson was unstoppable, netting five goals. Mary VanEaton added one goal to cap off the 6-0 rout.

The Cruisers carried their momentum into Thursday's away match at Clover Park.

Courson led the way again with two goals, while VanEaton, Kalli Olson, and Linnea Lofgren each added one in the 5-0 victory.

Goalkeeper Tierney Amaral was solid between the posts.

“We’re showing our ability to possess the ball, and though we’re still improving on creating chances, the progress is there,” said Eatonville head coach Max Van Eaton.

The two wins move Eatonville to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in 2A SPSL league play. The Cruisers will host Franklin Pierce on Tuesday, Oct. 1, before heading to face rivals Orting on Thursday, Oct. 3. Both matches are scheduled for 7 p.m.

With chainsaws revving and the crowd cheering, the Eatonville Cruiser football team takes the field prior to the Homecoming game against the Foss Falcons this past Thursday evening. The Cruisers would defeat the Falcons 45-20 to improve to 4-0 on the year.

Eatonville's Haley Courson lines up for a penalty kick as Kalli Olson (#2) looks on. Courson would be successful on the try and would help lead the Cruisers to a 5-0 victory over Clover Park.

Eatonville cross country team picks up victories

The Eatonville High School cross country teams opened their 2A South Puget Sound League season in commanding fashion, sweeping both the boys and girls team titles on Thursday, Sept. 26. The meet, held at Camp Arnold in Eatonville, featured strong competition from Steilacoom and Washington High Schools, but the Cruisers emerged victorious with multiple top-10 finishes in both races.

Boys Recap

The Eatonville boys, led by junior Colton Rush, displayed depth and consistency, securing the overall team victory with five runners in the top 12. Rush took first place with a strong time of 17:55, crossing the finish line over 20 seconds ahead of his closest competitor.

Sophomore Benjamin Bernt followed in third, finishing in 18:23, while freshman Gabriel Kolsrud impressed with a personal best of 18:49 to claim fifth place. The Cruisers continued to pile on points with sophomore Titus Lowe taking 10th in 19:53, and sophomore Tytus Goode finishing 12th in 20:19, completing Eatonville’s scoring five.

Senior Joey Callon (14th, 20:41) and senior Ben Morrish (16th, 21:06) also turned in solid performances, while junior Corey Demsey rounded out the Eatonville squad in 19th place with a time of 21:24.

early 8-0 lead.

Eatonville’s defense quickly set the tone, bottling up Foss on their opening possession and forcing a punt. Taking over at their own 21-yard line, the Cruisers’ offense went back to work. A 33-yard reception by Hill moved them into Foss territory again, and a few plays later, Fowler hit a streaking Hill across the middle for a 17yard touchdown strike. Colton Herbrand ran in another two-point conversion to extend Eatonville’s lead to 16-0.

The Cruisers' defense continued to dominate, forcing a turnover on downs at the Foss 35-yard line. Wasting no time, Fowler found Stogsdill on a perfectly executed 35-yard touchdown pass. Herbrand's extra point was good, and the Cruisers were rolling with a 23-0 lead with less than 15 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

The second quarter opened with both teams trading punts and turnovers on downs. The game took a decisive turn when Foss muffed a punt deep in their own territory, giving Eatonville the ball at the Falcons’ 19-yard line. Eatonville capitalized immediately, with Connor McIlraith punching in a 4-yard touchdown run. Hill

again found Stogsdill for the twopoint conversion, pushing the Cruisers’ lead to 31-0.

Foss’s next drive ended in disaster as quarterback Ty'Reke Johnson’s pass was intercepted by Eatonville’s Nash Sherrard, who returned it 25 yards for a pick-six. Herbrand’s extra point extended Eatonville’s lead to 38-0 with a minute left in the half.

Foss finally found the scoreboard before halftime when Johnson connected with wide receiver Tyler Adkins on a 61-yard touchdown pass after a breakdown in the Eatonville secondary. The Falcons’ attempt at a two-point conversion failed when Eatonville’s Oscar Garcia delivered a big hit on the ball carrier, and the Cruisers took a commanding 38-6 lead into halftime.

The Homecoming festivities continued during the break, as Eatonville High School had voted to crown senior football player Hebron Leasiolagi as Homecoming King. As tradition would dictate, Leasiolagi was then told who was voted the Queen from the Senior Homecoming court. After strolling back and forth in front of the court, he stopped in front of senior Bailey Andersen, who was crowned Homecoming Queen.

Eatonville swim team captures back-to-back wins

The Eatonville High School girls’ swim team delivered impressive performances, securing victories against both Clover Park and Steilacoom. Led by standout swims from senior captains Kaylee Bernt, Gracie Forsman, and junior captain Annika Howard, the Cruisers showed dominance, achieving district qualifying times and personal bests along the way.

In their victory over Clover Park, Bernt won both the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle. Howard followed with a win in the 200 individual medley, and a come-from-behind victory in the 100 butterfly.

Eatonville’s depth was on display in the 100 freestyle, as Forsman clinched first place, while sophomore Lily Hays dropped over five seconds off her lifetime best to secure second in a 1-2 sweep. Junior Nicole Tomyn grabbed another first-place finish for the Cruisers in the 100 backstroke, while Forsman earned another win in the 100 breaststroke, improving her district qualifying time.

To cap the meet, the Cruisers’ 400-yard freestyle relay team of Tomyn, Howard, Bernt, and Forsman delivered a convincing win to secure Eatonville’s 82-69 victory over Clover Park.

In a surprising result, Eatonville went on to defeat Steilacoom for the first time in recent memory, with a series of standout performances. Bernt once again led the charge, dropping 6.44 seconds off her season best to win the 200 freestyle and qualify for districts. Bernt later delivered an

improve, however, as third-string quarterback Jeremiah Velez was immediately pressured by defensive lineman Isaiah Whatley. With Whatley in pursuit and Weichsler closing in, Velez threw up a desperation pass as he was hit, only for Eatonville linebacker Logan Shipman to intercept it and rumble 26 yards for a touchdown. Herbrand’s extra point was good, increasing the Cruisers’ lead to 45-6.

Foss would score twice late in the fourth quarter against Eatonville’s backups, once on a 31-yard touchdown pass from CJ Wiley to Adkins. Eatonville’s Phillip Buchholz would pick off the two point conversion attempt. Foss would score again on a 68yard fumble recovery, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the early onslaught as Eatonville secured the 45-20 victory.

Head Coach Rex Norris was pleased with his team’s performance but emphasized the need for improvement, particularly in maintaining energy and avoiding penalties.

“We were happy to do well on Homecoming and have a lot of players get in and get experience,” Norris said. “Offensively, we were efficient in the first quarter, but things slowed down in the second with penalties. We dominated defensively but gave up a long pass

astonishing time drop of 18.07 seconds in the 500 freestyle, securing another district qualifying time.

In the 200 individual medley, Howard took first place and Hays out touched her opponent for second. Forsman added to the team’s success with a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle, earning a district qualification. Tomyn had a lifetime best swim to win the 100 freestyle.

The Eatonville dominance continued in the 100 backstroke with a clean 1-2-3 sweep, led by Tomyn, followed by senior Bella Wolters in second and Hays in third. Forsman closed out individual events with a season-best time in the 100 breaststroke, further improving her district qualifying time.

The Cruisers finished the meet strong with another relay win in the 400 freestyle, featuring Tomyn, Howard, Bernt, and Forsman to finish off the Sentinels and claim an 88-78 team victory.

Next up, Eatonville will host the Foss Falcons on Tuesday, Oct. 1, followed by a rematch against Fife on Thursday, Oct. 3 at Eatonville.

for a touchdown. There’s still a lot to improve if we want to compete for a playoff spot.”

Eatonville offensive coordinator Jazel Riley was pleased with his team’s performance.

“Foss is a team with some tough, athletic kids. We were able to get up early while getting some live, in-game varsity reps for some guys for the first time,” Riley said. “Offensively, we wanted to try a few things out while making sure we got some touches for guys who have put in a ton of good, hard work since spring. We have a tough league stretch coming up, so the major goals this week were to, of course, get the win but also come out healthy. We have some things we need to clean up, but that will always be the case.”

Riley also praised his quarterback, Fowler, for his continued growth.

“Cannot say enough about Cole and how much he is growing and gaining understanding and control of the system. We are getting opportunities for multiple people in each game, and they’re taking advantage of those opportunities.”

Norris concluded by stating, “As we head into the 2nd half of the season, we will need to recommit ourselves to the process and to each other. We have to remind ourselves that we have a young team and a lot of them are learning a lot.

We are pleased with what we have been able to accomplish so far, but we have more goals that we are looking to accomplish.”

Key Performances:

Cole Fowler – 18/28 for 298 yards and 2 touchdowns

Michael Stogsdill – 8 catches for 114 yards and 1 touchdown

Riley Hill – 4 catches for 82 yards and 1 touchdown

Connor McIlraith – 5 carries for 26 yards and a touchdown

Wyatt Weichsler – 1 carry for 8 yards and 1 touchdown

Nash Sherrard – 25 yard interception returned for a touchdown

Logan Shipman – 26 yard interception returned for a touchdown

With the win, Eatonville improves to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in 2A SPSL league play. Next up, they face their toughest challenge of the season in the form of the undefeated Franklin Pierce Cardinals (4-0), who are ranked No. 10 in the latest AP Poll. The Cardinals, led by offensive coordinator Cary Nagel (former Tenino head coach), run a physical Power-T offense that focuses on controlling the clock with a steady ground game.

The highly anticipated matchup is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 3, with a 7 p.m. kickoff at Franklin Pierce High School.

Eatonville boys tennis defeats Clover Park, 4-1; two matches this week

Bowling for food

Bowls are a popular and trendy category of food. The concept is simple: An individual serving bowl is arranged with various composed ingredients, such as cooked grains, vegetables, salads and proteins, that are connected by flavors and spices from regional cuisines. It's a satisfying and healthy sum of its individual parts -- and fun to eat.

The variations are limitless, and the seasonings and cultural influences are the distinguishing factors. A bowl may contain fresh or stir-fried vegetables, pickles and salsas, beans or legumes, rice or another grain, and cooked proteins, such as meat, chicken, tofu or shrimp.

This recipe is influenced by Southwestern cuisine. You can play with the ingredients and mix and match to your preference. Tofu, the main protein in the bowl, is a wonderful vessel for a marinade, and when cooked, its edges crisp, yielding a delightful texture. It's important to drain tofu and press it before cooking. This step removes any excess liquid, which ensures crispy results. Not a tofu fan? Skirt or flank steak, chicken or shrimp are great substitutions.

Note that the rice and salsa require advance preparation before assembling the bowl. They can be prepped while the tofu presses and marinates. They also make nice side dishes for other meals.

6-1, 6-4, while Golding overcame Cortez 6-2, 6-1. In doubles play, Carl Lucas and Nate Goode dominated their match, winning 6-0, 6-0 against Clover Park’s No. 1 doubles team.

The pairing of Steven Haas and Jackson Rockey delivered a thrilling comeback victory in their match, overcoming a first-set loss to win 3-6, 6-0, 7-5. The wind, which picked up during the second hour of play, created challenges for both teams as gusts pushed balls out of bounds,

forcing players to adjust their strategies.

Eatonville’s only loss came in the third doubles match, where Dana Bazan and Gavin Campbell, playing together for the first time, fell 1-6, 4-6. Despite the loss, the duo showed potential for future matches.

Next up for the Cruisers is an away match against the Fife Trojans on Tuesday, Oct. 1, followed by a home match against the Franklin Pierce Cardinals on Thursday, Oct. 3.

kitchen towel or paper towels. Place several layers of paper towels on top and weigh down with another cutting board. Let stand for at least 30 minutes to drain. Once drained, cut into bite-size cubes. While the tofu is draining, combine the marinade ingredients in a food processor and process to blend.

Arrange the drained tofu in one layer in a baking dish. Pour the marinade over and turn the tofu to coat. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

While the tofu is marinating, make the rice. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the rice; stir to coat and lightly toast, 15 to 30 seconds. Add the water and salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot and cook until the liquid is absorbed, about 20 minutes. Turn off the heat, remove the lid and place a kitchen towel over the pot. Cover with the lid and let stand for 5 minutes. Remove the lid and towel and fluff the rice with a fork. Add the cilantro and lime juice and fluff once more.

Combine the salsa ingredients in a bowl and mix to blend. Taste for seasoning.

Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add 1 tablespoon oil and swirl to coat. Arrange the tofu on the skillet and cook until browned on all sides, 6 to 8 minutes. Transfer to a plate and season with salt and black pepper.

Divide the rice between four serving bowls. Arrange the tofu, salsa, tomatoes and avocado over the rice. Drizzle with the reserved marinade, if desired. Garnish with additional cilantro and serve with lime wedges.
