The Townsend family, recently recognized as the West Region Outstanding Tree Farmers of the Year, has won the National title for the year of 2024. The family has managed the 277-acre Coburg Tree Farm with passion, innovation, and a deep-rooted commitment to sustainability and family. Located in the Cascade foothills near Eatonville, Washington, Coburg Tree Farm has been a family legacy since its certification through the American Tree Farm System (ATFS) in 1955. It stands as the 9th oldest continuously certified tree farm in Washington State, with three generations of Townsends working together to manage their land for future generations.
The farm’s history dates back to 1954 when Robert “Bob” Wise purchased 160 acres of forested land that had naturally regenerated after a 1924 fire. He named the property Coburg Tree Farm to honor his German heritage. The family has since expanded the farm and passed it down through the generations, each contributing to the management and sustainability of the forest. Today, the Townsend brothers—Steve, Dave, Carl, and Keith, along with their wives — Kay, Jan, Jennine and Yvonne —and their families, follow a 90-year forest management plan focused on sustainable timber production, wildlife habitat preservation, and water quality protection.
Over the decades, the family has applied creative and unique management strategies as they’ve continued to learn. Coburg Tree Farm is divided into 13 management units, each averaging 20 acres, with a comprehensive schedule of thinning, harvesting, and replanting. They have replanted Douglas-fir, western red cedar, and red alder, and have successfully used techniques such as pruning, pre-commercial thinning, and post-harvest salvaging. An innovative pair-planting experiment involving Douglas-fir and Sitka spruce has led to faster growth of seedlings, with trees 75% taller than netted ones after just five years.
The family’s commitment to water conservation is evident in their work around Krone’s Creek, a seasonal stream on the property. Through Washington State’s Family Forest Fish Passage Program, they replaced a fish-blocking culvert to support better water flow and habitat connectivity.
Their logging practices exceed riparian buffer requirements, the farm’s roads are carefully maintained, and western redcedar was planted along the stream to increase bank stabilization and provide shade.
Community engagement has also played a vital role in the farm’s operations. The Townsends have hosted numerous educational tours and events for organizations like the Washington Farm Forestry Association (WFFA) and local conservation districts.
They’ve hosted elected officials for tours to showcase sustainable forestry and the positive impacts private landowners can make on the landscape. The family’s long-standing involvement in leadership roles within the WFFA, with Keith and Yvonne serving as Co-Vice Chairs of the Washington Tree Farm Program, further highlights their dedication to helping other landowners in their community.
With their innovative approach to sustainable forestry and active community involvement, the Townsend family has created a lasting legacy at Coburg Tree Farm. Their work ensures that the forest will continue to thrive, providing habitat for wildlife, timber for harvest, and educational opportunities for future generations. The Townsends say it best themselves, “We learn from challenges and feel the joy of accomplishments; the spirit of Grampa Wise lives on in this beautiful place.”

Deb Krishnadasan was appointed to the 26th Legislative District Senate seat on Wednesday, Dec. 11, to complete the term of Senator Emily Randall (D-Bremerton), during a joint special meeting of the Pierce County Council and Kitsap County Board of Commissioners. Randall resigned her seat on Sunday, Dec. 8, to assume her new role as U.S. Representative for Washington's 6th Congressional District.
Krishnadasan served as an elected official on the Peninsula school board for six years. In addition, she has worked as a volunteer in education for the past 15 years.
which made this a joint appointment effort between the two counties. Each body had a total of three votes, which meant that each of the seven members of the Pierce County Council had a 3/7 vote.
Per state law, the 26th Legislative District Democrats nominated three qualified candidates to fill the vacancy, with the legislative authorities of Pierce and Kitsap counties jointly making the final appointment from the three candidates.
Krishnadasan will hold the seat until they or their successor is elected at the next general election.

The crisp mountain air vibrated with the rhythmic drone of a chainsaw as Keith Townsend surveyed the Douglas fir plantation, a proud smile etched on his face. Sunlight went through the towering trees, casting long shadows on the forest floor. Coburg Tree Farm is a 277-acre testament to generations of sustainable forestry, a legacy meticulously crafted by his family.
Weyerhaeuser Timber Company, a behemoth in the timber industry, purchased the land in 1900.
Back then, the land was a tapestry of towering old-growth Douglas fir and cedar, giants that had stood sentinel for centuries. Loggers employed by companies like the Far West Lumber Company and the Eatonville Lumber Company descended upon this pristine wilderness, their tools of the trade – cross-cut saws, double-bit axes, and springboards – echoing through the forest. The timber was hauled out on rail lines, a testament to the industrial might of the era, leaving behind a landscape forever altered.
Then, in 1924, a devastating fire swept through the area. Fueled by logging slash, the inferno raced across the landscape, consuming everything in its path. The Coburg Tree Farm area, stripped of its ancient giants, was left to the mercy of the flames.
From the ashes emerged a new chapter. The land, resilient as ever, began to regenerate naturally. A mosaic of Douglas fir, red alder, western red cedar, black cottonwood, and vine maple slowly reclaimed the charred earth.
In 1954, Robert “Bob” Wise, Keith’s grandfather, a man with a vision for sustainable forestry, purchased 160 acres of this reborn forest, christening it Coburg Tree Farm, a nod to his German heritage. Coburg is a village in Germany.
A year later, Bob acquired an adjacent 120-acre parcel, solidifying his commitment to the land.
Recognizing the long-term
potential of timber production, Bob put the newly acquired 120 acres in trust for his grandsons, Steve and Dave Townsend, laying the foundation for the Coburg Tree Farm Partnership. This was a turning point, a transition from exploitative logging to a philosophy of stewardship.
Bob, a seasoned forester, understood that the forest needed a guiding hand. He embarked on a mission to nurture the secondgrowth forest, carefully thinning dead and diseased trees, girdling red alder to give Douglas fir a competitive edge, and selectively harvesting poles for commercial use. He meticulously crafted skid roads and access roads, ensuring responsible access to the timber, and even experimented with selective fertilizing to enhance growth.
The Townsend brothers, imbued with their grandfather’s passion for the land, spent their childhood exploring the forest’s hidden trails, learning the art and science of sustainable forestry from their grandfather. In 1976, Steve and Dave, then in college, joined their parents, Ivan and Elaine
Townsend, on spring break for a momentous task: planting 5,000 Douglas fir seedlings. This 16-acre plantation, a symbol of their family’s commitment to the future, would later be affectionately known as the ‘76 Plantation.
In the ensuing years, Coburg Tree Farm welcomed more family members into its fold. Carl and Keith Townsend, Steve and Dave’s brothers, joined the partnership, their individual skills and perspectives enriching the family’s forestry endeavors.
The brothers, carrying the torch passed down by their grandfather, embraced innovation, constantly seeking ways to improve their forestry practices. They divided the farm into 13 management units, each averaging 20 acres, implementing a meticulous schedule of thinning, harvesting, and replanting to ensure a continuous cycle of sustainable timber production.
The Townsend family expanded the Coburg Tree Farm’s legacy by planting a diverse mix of Douglas fir, western redcedar, and red alder, meticulously tending to each seedling. Their dedication to the craft extended to exploring new
techniques, such as pair-planting Douglas fir and Sitka spruce, an experiment that yielded remarkable results – the trees grew 75% taller than their netted counterparts in just five years. Their commitment to environmental stewardship was unwavering. They went above and beyond regulatory requirements, meticulously maintaining their logging roads to minimize erosion, and planting western red cedar along the banks of Krone’s Creek, a seasonal stream that flowed through their property, to enhance bank stabilization and provide shade.
Recognizing the importance of community engagement, the Townsend family opened their doors to the public, hosting educational tours for organizations like the Washington Farm Forestry Association (WFFA) and local conservation districts. They shared their knowledge and passion for sustainable forestry with elected officials and the community, showcasing the positive impact that private landowners could have on the landscape.

The Pierce County Council adopted the 2024 Comprehensive Plan Update, concluding a multi-year community outreach, planning, and legislative effort. The Comprehensive Plan is a foundational document that guides the County's growth and development over the next 20 years.
The plan aligns with the Washington State Growth Management Act (GMA) requirements, Puget Sound Regional Council’s Vision
2050 objectives, and local priorities to ensure a balanced approach to population, housing, economic, and environmental needs.
Key highlights of the 2024 Comprehensive Plan Update include:
■ Promoting Affordable Housing: Policies aim to address housing affordability and equity, with an emphasis on middle housing options, emergency housing, and antidisplacement measures.
■ Focusing Growth Around Transit: High-Capacity Transit (HCT) areas will see new growth
concentrated to foster sustainable, transit-oriented development, while reducing development pressure on rural lands.
■ Conservation and Climate Action: Expansions of conservation programs will protect up to 100,000 acres of working forests, farmland, and open spaces. Climate change mitigation and resilience strategies are integrated across all policy elements.
■ UGA Retraction: The update scales back Urban Growth Areas by over 700 acres, preserving

Are you Brussels sprouts-averse?
This recipe may help. It takes the divisive earthy crucifer and greets it head-on with equally potent ingredients: kimchi, gochujang and yes, fish sauce.
Now, depending on how you feel about these fermented ingredients, you might consider this an abomination. However, I encourage you to shift your view and liken it to a double (or triple or quadruple) negative, where the sum of the "negatives" produces a positive. And if you happen to be a fan of these ingredients, then you can simply call this recipe a grand slam.
Kimchi is a traditional Korean condiment made from salted fermented vegetables. It often includes cabbage and seasonings including sugar, ginger, garlic and chiles. It’s also rich in nutrients and guthealthy probiotics. Gochujang is a funky, spicy-sweet Korean mash of fermented soybeans, chiles and glutinous rice. And while fish sauce may sound frightening, a restrained splash is universally revered for the salty, umami depth of flavor it adds to a dish. When these ingredients converge on Brussels sprouts, they respectively keep each other in check. Their assertiveness is muted, collectively taming any outrageous funkiness, without canceling each other out. You might say it’s an arrangement of mutual cooperation. I call it a cruciferous detente.
KIMCHI BRUSSELS SPROUTS
Active time: 5 to 10 minutes
Total time: 25 to 30 minutes
Yield: Serves 4
SAUCE:
■ 1 tablespoon gochujang
■ 1/2 tablespoon unseasoned rice wine vinegar
■ 1/2 teaspoon runny honey
■ 1/2 teaspoon finely grated peeled fresh ginger
■ 1/2 teaspoon fish sauce
■ 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 pounds Brussels sprouts, ends trimmed, halved if large
■ 2 teaspoons olive oil
■ Kosher salt
■ 1/2 cup drained kimchi (mild), finely chopped
Place a large cast-iron skillet in the oven and heat to 400 degrees.
Whisk the sauce ingredients in a bowl.
Place the sprouts in a large bowl. Add the oil and lightly season with salt. Toss to coat. Remove the skillet from the oven and spread the Brussels sprouts evenly in the skillet. Return to the oven and roast until the sprouts are tender and charred in spots, 15 to 20 minutes, depending on their size, shaking the pan once or twice.
Remove the skillet from the oven. Immediately add the sauce to the skillet and stir to coat the Brussels sprouts, about 10 seconds. Transfer to a bowl and stir in the kimchi. (By avoiding the heat of the skillet, the healthy bacteria in the kimchi will be preserved.) Serve warm.

It’s a great question. As we get older and our financial life gets more complicated, it’s difficult to know how long to keep old financial records and paperwork and when it’s safe to get rid of them. Some things you’ll need to hold on to for your whole life and others for just a month or so. Here’s a checklist I’ve created that can help you determine what to save and what you can throw away.
KEEP ONE MONTH
ATM receipts and bank-deposit slips, as soon as you match them up with your monthly statement.
Credit card receipts after you get your statement, unless you might return the item or need proof of purchase for a warranty.
Credit card statements that do not have a tax-related expense on them.
Utility bills when the following month’s bill arrives showing that your prior payment was received. If you wish to track utility usage over time, you may want to keep them for a year, or if you deduct a home office on your taxes keep them for seven years.
To avoid identity theft, be sure you shred anything you throw away that contains your
personal or financial information.
KEEP ONE YEAR
Paycheck stubs until you get your W-2 in January to check its accuracy.
Bank statements (savings and checking account) to confirm your 1099s.
Brokerage, 401(k), IRA and other investment statements until you get your annual summary (keep longer for tax purposes if they show a gain or loss).
Receipts for health care bills in case you qualify for a medical deduction.
KEEP SEVEN YEARS
Supporting documents for your taxes, including W-2s, 1099s, and receipts or canceled checks that substantiate deductions. The IRS usually has up to three years after you file to audit you but may look back up to six years if it suspects you substantially underreported income or committed fraud.
KEEP INDEFINITELY
Tax returns with proof of filing and payment. You should keep these for at least seven years, but many people keep them forever because they provide a record of your financial history.
IRS forms that you filed when making nondeductible contributions to a traditional IRA or a Roth conversion.
Retirement and brokerage account annual statements as long as you hold those investments.
Defined-benefit pension plan documents.
Savings bonds until redeemed.
Loan documents until the loan is paid off.
Vehicle titles and registration information as
long as you own the car, boat, truck, or other vehicle.
Insurance policies as long as you have them. Warranties or receipts for big-ticket purchases for as long as you own the item, to support warranty and insurance claims.
KEEP FOREVER
Personal and family records like birth certificates, marriage license, divorce papers, Social Security cards, military discharge papers and estate-planning documents including a power of attorney, will, trust and advanced directive. Keep these in a fireproof safe or safe-deposit box.
REDUCE YOUR PAPER
To reduce your paper clutter, consider digitizing your documents by scanning them and converting them into PDF files so you can store them on your computer and back them up onto a cloud like Microsoft OneDrive, Apple iCloud or iDrive.
