QUEEN ANNE HOLIDAY MAGIC
2017 Holiday Reading Recommendations from Queen Anne Book Company For the Nonfiction Reader
Leonardo da Vinci by Walter Isaacson
For the Short Story, Quick Escape Reader
his genius in all things - technology, philosophy, science, engineering, nature, life and art. This book has a permanent place on my personal bookshelves. - Janis Segress This book is an outstanding in depth look into the artist, inventor and innovator that was Da Vinci. As an art history major, I thought I knew quite a bit about Leonardo, but Isaacson’s insights and wonderful writing taught me so much more. - Judy de Jonge
Picture one of the greatest artists the world has ever known, and chances are Leonardo da Vinci is at the top of the list. The works of art he left the world centuries ago are treasures still admired and studied today. Walter Isaacson, in his engrossing and fact-driven writing style, unveils the layers of who is arguably the most famous renaissance man, Leonardo da Vinci. A man whose insatiably curious mind drove
airplanes, equipment and arsenals with bombs and grenades. Audacious personal stories of courage told in that edge-of-yourseat style. - Wendee Wieking
Rogue Heroes by Ben Macintyre
This is the riveting, action-packed true life story of the Secret Air Service, an elite group of the World War II British military. With access to never-before released archives, Macintyre details the creation of this revolutionary strategic group that parachuted into the desert of North Africa, landing in the pitch black of night BEHIND Nazi troops, then sabotaging German

Our products are so unique, they will surprise you! Stop in Friday, December 8th for Holiday Magic 4pm-7pm and enjoy some Champagne
Uncommon Type - Some Stories by Tom Hanks Agent M: The Lives and Spies of Mi5’s Maxwell Knight by Henry Hemming
Fans of espionage tales will devour this true story about the spymaster who was the real-life inspiration for the James Bond character “M”. A sweeping look at British intelligence from the 1920s through the Cold War, it is full of fact-is-stranger-thanfiction details and astonishing original historical research using recently released documents. - Tegan Tigani
The multi-talented Tom Hanks can also write. Who knew? His friend Nora Ephron did, and backed him with editing and encouragement. The outcome is a collection of extremely engaging and charming short stories told by a master story teller. One of my favorites is set in the future with all of its efficiencies, yet the main character longs to go back to a simpler time; a time of heavy cream in your coffee, of knotted ties and home-baked pies, to the 1939 World Fair. Perfect for an entertaining, quick escape read. - Janis Segress Book listing, Continued on Page 8

Holiday Guide 2017

For the Literary Fiction Reader
In the Midst of Winter by Isabel Allende
For the Creative Reader Devotion by Patti Smith
Slip into Smith’s morning cup of black coffee and taste her words. Her voice, as it has always done, will captivate. This is a very different piece of writing from Smith. She presents her first work of fiction, a small short story that takes the title and wraps it up in a speculation of creativity. Pair this little tale and eloquent invitation into her mind with a playlist of her legendary tunes! - Bailey Wilkerson
Allende is a master storyteller. This beautifully written novel brings together three very different people following a minor traffic accident in the middle of a Brooklyn snowstorm. There is history, mystery, tragedy and humor which makes Allende’s latest novel one of my all time favorite reads. - Judy de Jonge
For the Reader Who Has It All
Around the World in 80 Cocktails by Chad Parkhill and Alice Oehr
Here’s the perfect hostess/host gift. This gorgeous little book pairs retro-style illustrations reminiscent of the old travel posters with exotic cocktail recipes as well as the history of each cocktail. These cocktails are easy and fun to make at home. Travel the globe from your home bar! - Tegan Tigani
Incognito: The Secret Lives of the Brain and Sum: Forty Tales from the Afterlives by David Eagleman.
The Living Infinite by Chantel Acevedo
Fans of historical fiction will love this novel set in late 19th century Spain that tells the story of the real-life infanta Princess Eulalia, daughter of Isabel II. Bold and outspoken, Eulalia became a foreign emissary traveling to Cuba in the heat of the revolution and to America to the Chicago World’s Fair, where she hopes to find a publisher for her scandalous memoir. Fast-paced, full of adventure, and with a touch of romance. - Wendee Wieking
These two books make the perfect pair! Both beautifully written books by a neuroscientist will really open up your mind about the wonders of your brain and the questions we can never truly answer. These books were both so exciting and interesting to read! I recommend them to everyone! Incognito is all science in the most approachable manner. Incognito is a fun and somewhat interpersonally romantic read. Sum is a short fiction collection of vignettes each proposing a different possibility of what happens after we all inevitably die. - Bailey Wilkerson
Sneakers by Rodrigo Corral, Alex French, and Howie Kahn
I bet there’s someone on your gift list who would go gaga over this strikingly hip, fun book! Photos of amazing pairs and text about design and history. This is a quirky, gorgeous, shoe-geeky delight. - Tegan Tigani
For the Cook (Novice to the Accomplished)
Beyond the Bright Sea by Lauren Wolk
Touching story of a twelve year old girl who was abandoned and set adrift in a small boat when she was an infant who was rescued and raised on a tiny island off the coast of Massachusetts. She becomes curious about her own history and the larger world around her. What results is a gripping story that explores questions of identity, belonging and the true meaning of family. - Lisa Miller
Dinner by Melissa Clark
I cannot recommend this book enough! The recipes are simple, delicious and inventive, the photography is fantastic. Every recipe I have made has been a hit. The recipes can be a stand alone meal with perhaps the addition of a salad or bread. Try the Vietnamese Caramel Salmon or Linguine with Fried Lemon Slices and Chili Flakes. - Judy de Jonge
For the Young Reader
Ferdinand (book & plush set) by Munro Leaf
Even if there weren’t a new Ferdinand movie hitting the theaters this holiday season, I’d be recommending this adorable gift set. The classic book pairs with a sweet plush Ferdinand bull (complete with a flower in his mouth) for a charming present. I’d give it to kids ages 3-7 as well as adult fans who will appreciate a huggable reminder to stop and smell the roses. - Tegan Tigani

The Traditional Potato Latke: The Boyo At Hanukkah, Pastry Reminds us of the Mediterranean Roots
Note: The dough can be made the night before — after Step 4, set in the refrigerator in pan of oil, covered with plastic wrap and then aluminum foil. Bring dough to room temperature before using. 1. Knead dough very well until it forms a soft dough (8 to 10 minutes). If using a mixer with a dough hook, knead for 8 to 10 minutes after dough has hooked. 2 . Divide dough into 4 pieces. Make them into patties and place on a cloth that is floured. Oil the top of each patty and cover well in a warm location. Expose to as little air as possible. Let rise for half an hour or more, until double in size.
Dough Ingredients
3. Take each patty and roll out with a rolling pin to form as large a piece as possible without developing holes. Do this on a floured surface. Spread a thin layer of shortening over stretched dough.
2 cups water (warm but not hot, 105 to 115 degrees) 2 packages active dry yeast (not fast-rising) Mix above together and let bubble.
Add: 5 1/2 to 6 cups flour (unbleached) 2 teaspoons salt oil and shortening Filling Ingredients Large Bowl Spinach ** 1/3 cup flour 1 teaspoon salt (taste after cheese is added to see if it needs the salt) 1 egg, beaten 1 cup crumbled feta cheese (or more, to taste) 1 cup grated Romano cheese (or more, to taste), plus additional for topping * * TIP Buy one 2 1/2-pound bag of spinach, wash it once, spin in the salad spinner, chop 1/2-inch thick, and lay out on a table to dry overnight, with cloths under and paper towels over spinach.
Cranberry Relish Ingredients 2 cups whole raw cranberries, washed 1 small onion 3/4 cup sour cream 1/2 cup sugar 2 tablespoons horseradish from a jar (“red is a bit milder than white”)
4 . Roll tightly along the long edge into a cylinder, like a jelly roll, and set each roll into a pan of oil (1/2-inch deep). Cover with wax paper or plastic wrap and a cloth and set aside for one hour or more to rise. 5. Put together spinach mixture, using dry spinach chopped about 1/2-inch wide. Put flour in bowl, then add spinach. Mix together, then add other ingredients. 6 . Pull off or cut a small piece of dough, about the size of an egg, and roll until dough is very thin. Add spinach mixture and form boyo so dough completely encloses spinach mixture. Use oil on work surface if necessary. Coil into a round shape and place on a greased or parchment-lined pan, and sprinkle with additional Romano cheese. 7. Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes or until brown. Cool on rack.
Makes about 3 dozen small boyos. This relish has a tangy taste that cuts through and perks up the turkey and gravy. It’s also good on next-day turkey sandwiches and with roast beef. Makes 1 1/2 pints
Instructions Grind the raw berries and onion together. (You want a chunky grind, not a puree) Add everything else and mix. Put in a plastic container and freeze. Early in the morning, move it from freezer to refrigerator to thaw. The relish will be thick, creamy and shocking pink.

Fig, Pecan and Sausage Cornbread Stuffing
Magnolia We’ll Keep Your Pet Looking Merry and Bright this Holiday Season!
1 recipe plain buttermilk cornbread ** See Plain Buttermilk Cornbread Recipe Instructions 1 pound pork sausage (You can use spicy Italian) 1 cup Madeira wine 3/4 pound dried Calimyrna figs, stemmed and cut into eighths (about 2 cups when prepped) 2 cups pecan pieces, toasted 8 ounces unsalted butter 3 cups finely chopped onions 1 1/2 cups finely chopped celery 2 tablespoons chopped sage 2 tablespoons chopped thyme 2 tablespoons chopped rosemary 2 1/2 teaspoons coarse salt 1 teaspoon ground white pepper
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare cornbread, and when cooled, crumble and set aside in a large bowl. Remove sausage from casing, if necessary, and crumble. Cook sausage in a skillet over medium heat until cooked through; set aside. Place Madeira and prepped figs in a small saucepan over medium heat in order to re-hydrate figs. All of the liquid should be evaporated; this takes about 10 minutes. Toast pecans in a small skillet over low heat for about 5 minutes. In a large skillet, melt butter and add onions and celery. Cook over low to medium heat until vegetables are soft and translucent, about
10 minutes. Add herbs, salt and pepper and cook an additional 5 minutes. Add sausage, figs and onion mixture to the crumbled cornbread and loosely mix, using a wooden spoon or large kitchen spoon. Gently press stuffing mixture into 2-quart glass or ceramic baking dish (12”X8 1/4”X2 1/2”); the top should be textured and rustic, not smooth. Bake stuffing for 1 hour at 350 degrees. ** Plain Buttermilk Cornbread 1 1/2 cups yellow cornmeal 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 3/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 cup buttermilk 1/2 cup vegetable oil 1/3 cup sugar 2 large eggs
