IRISH HERITAGE CLUB OFFICERS & BOARD OF DIRECTORS PRESIDENT: David Jacobsen VICE-PRES: Ari Hausler SECRETARY: Betty Egan TREASURER: John Keane MEMBERSHIP SECTY: Caron McMahon BOARD MEMBERS: Ari Hausler, Brendan Shriane,

Welcome to our 38th Annual Irish Festival at the Seattle Center. Our Irish Week theme this year is remembering major Irish events from 1919, and especially those with Seattle connections. In Ireland, the first ever free Irish Parliament, called the First Dáil, met in Dublin on January 21, 1919, formed by the 73 Sinn Féin MPs representing Ireland who had been elected in the 1918 UK general election. At their 2nd meeting on April 19, Éamon de Valera was elected President of Dáil Éireann, making him leader of the revolutionary Irish Republic. The Pacific Northwest became involved because it was later that year, in November 1919, that Éamon de Valera visited Seattle where, according to the Seattle P-I, he was met by “a tumultuous throng” of supporters. While the centenary of that 1919 de Valera visit is the focus of our Irish Week celebrations, we continue the tradition of bringing together the Seattle area’s finest performers and artists to provide a taste of what it means to be Irish. We hope you enjoy learning about Irish culture and history! As always, Míle, Míle Buíochas (A Thousand, Thousand Thanks) to all our performers, dancers, musicians, exhibitors and our dedicated volunteers without whom there would be no Irish Festival. Enjoy this Taste of Ireland.

IRISH WEEK 2019

Joe McDermott King County Councilmember Joe McDermott has been on the King County Council since 2010 and served as Chair for the past three years. His father’s family originated from Co Tyrone and his mother’s family, the Keohane’s, from Co Cork. Having first attended a family gathering in Ireland in 1994, Joe now visits Ireland annually to see family, lead political exchanges, attend film festivals, and conduct genealogical research. He considers watching the sun rise over an ancient stone circle and being locked into a pub after hours to be essential life experiences! In his spare time, he bakes a mean Irish Apple Cake and takes Irish History courses at the University of Washington. We are delighted and honored to have Joe McDermott as our 2019 St. Patrick’s Day Parade Grand Marshal.

Parade Honorary Grand Marshal: Nicole Russeff

Extremely proud of her Irish heritage, 35-year-old Nicole Russeff has participated in our parade for the past thirteen years, and it’s always the highlight of her year. Nicole’s great grandparents immigrated from Co. Down in 1907 and her great grand-aunt was Lily Kempson who fought in Dublin during the 1916 Easter Rebellion. Because of her pure delight in celebrating St. Patrick’s Day every year, and the infectious joy she conveys to all watching, the Irish Heritage Club is delighted that she has agreed to be Honorary Grand Marshal of this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Visiting from Ireland: Minister Ciarán Cannon Irish government Minister Ciarán Cannon has special responsibility for the Irish Diaspora (those of Irish birth or descent living outside Ireland) and International Development, which means that a major focus of his visit, in addition to trade and promoting bilateral relations, is to engage with the Irish community, especially at Seattle’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. A member of Dáil Eireann (the Irish Parliament) since 2011, he was born in Athenry, Co. Galway, where he still lives with his wife Niamh and son Evan. He is also an award winning musician and songwriter and an avid cyclist. We extend a warm Céad Míle Fáilte (One Hundred Thousand Welcomes) to Minister Cannon on his first visit to the Emerald City.

Galway Mayor Níall McNelis Mayor McNelis is a native of Galway and became Mayor of Galway in July 2018 after serving on the City Council for 8 years. In addition to his mayoral duties preparing the city of Galway to become the official European Capital of Culture in 2020, he takes a keen interest in European affairs and is a member of the European Union Committee of Regions. He and his wife Aideen also run their own business, Claddagh and Celtic Jewelry Co. A fluent Gaelic speaker and a passionate sports fan, this is the Mayor’s first ever visit to Seattle and we wish him a sincere Céad Míle Fáilte (One Hundred Thousand Welcomes) as he visits Galway’s sister city of Seattle.

IRISH WEEK 2019

UPPER LEVEL LOFT ACTIVITIES FEATURED EXHIBIT – 1919 HISTORY Thousands of first and second generation Irish ended up living in the Pacific Northwest and the Seattle area, especially after the Yukon Gold Rush years of 1896-99. When the 1916 Easter Rebellion in Dublin collapsed, many more Irish people came to Seattle. Despite the distance from Ireland, all these Irish people were still intensely interested in what was happening in Ireland and kept in touch via mail and with visits to Ireland. In January 1919, one of the first acts of the new Irish Parliament in Dublin, the First Dáil, had been to issue a formal Irish Declaration of Independence. It took a few months but that Declaration also made its way to Seattle. The above photo has a hand-written caption: M J Costello Reading Irish Republican Declaration of Independence The Irish Picnic Wildwood Park Seattle, WA Aug 17, 1919. Later that same year, Éamon de Valera, 1916 Revolutionary and President of the revolutionary Irish Republic, also visited Seattle and the Pacific Northwest. Our exhibit includes copies of contemporary newspaper reports and photos from his 1919 visits to Butte, Seattle and Portland.

Rozarii Lynch: Photo Exhibit Rozarii is a Seattle based freelance photographer. A native of Co Cavan, Ireland, Rozarii’s passion for travel and world culture has taken her around the globe. She has lived and photographed on four continents and her photography has been published in newspapers, magazines and books. Rozarii’s fine art photography is widely exhibited and her work is in many private collections. See more of Rozarii’s imagery at www.rozarii.com.

COOPER FAMILY’S ANTIQUE IRISH POSTCARDS John and Alice Cooper will again be featured at the Irish Festival with their exhibition of original reproductions of Bartlett’s Views of Ireland, made just a few years before the Great Potato Famine, along with thousands of antique Irish postcards. The reproductions and postcards cover watershed eras in the history of Ireland, providing an interesting glimpse into the social history, cultural history and material culture of Ireland in the turbulent 1800s and also in the “Golden Age of Postcards”, the early 1900s. It all makes for wonderful “browsing”!

100 years ago this year, Irish Revolutionary Leader Éamon de Valera visited Seattle The senior surviving leader of the 1916 Easter Rebellion in Dublin, Éamon de Valera, was imprisoned twice by the British for his efforts to promote Irish independence. The first time was in May 1916 after the Rebellion collapsed, and he was freed in June 1917 in a general amnesty. He was again arrested in May 1918 and jailed in Lincoln Jail in London. He escaped from Lincoln Jail in February 1919, and while still on the run, was elected President of Dáil Éireann (Irish Parliament), making him leader of the revolutionary Irish Republic. In May 1919, he came to the USA to lobby for recognition of the new Irish Free State, to gain the support of the American people for the newly independent nation, and to raise money to fund Ireland’s fight for independence. On his 18 month trip crisscrossing the US by train, he visited over 50 cities and raised almost $6 million, about $80 million in today’s money. He received such an enthusiastic

reception in Butte, MT, that he went back a second time. Among the cities he visited was Seattle where he arrived on November 12, 1919. He spoke before a crowd of over 6,000 in the Seattle Ice Arena before moving on to Portland on November 15. De Valera’s reception in Portland got off to a rocky start when flags were torn from his car outside his hotel, but he later got a great reception at Columbia College, now the University of Portland, when he spoke there on November 15, 1919. Following Irish independence in 1922, de Valera went on to serve as Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) on three occasions: from 1937 to 1948, from 1951 to 1954 and finally from 1957 to 1959. He also served two seven year terms as President of Ireland. He was 92 years old when he died in 1975.

Here are copies of newspaper headlines on his Seattle visit:
