AND THE NAME IS …

This month, Queen Anne residents have participated in a community-led effort to name the crane that towers over upper Queen Anne and the former Safeway site under construction.

After polling residents for name suggestions,

votes were submitted for four finalists: Frasier, Kirby, Cranium and Calvin — after Calvin Clark, a popular, longtime mailman on Queen Anne who is retiring this year.

While the final results were close, residents have spoken and decided the crane should be named: CALVIN, which edged out runner-up Frasier.

The crane, owned by Compass Construction, is a Liebherr 630EC-H Litronic, and will be used to do the heavy lifting at the construction site until late 2023. It is 157 feet tall and can be seen from I-5 and the ferries coming into Seattle from Puget Sound. The jib is 267 feet long.

Redistricting committee splits Magnolia; community effort underway to challenge

The Seattle Redistricting Committee might have split Magnolia into two council districts in its final map submitted to the county last week, but residents unhappy with the decision can still protest the decision.

The Magnolia Community Council in the past month launched a fundraising effort to support community members who wish to challenge the final City Council map presented to the county by appealing.

The redistricting committee was charged with redrawing council district map boundaries this year to reflect changes in population. Because

District 7, currently represented by Councilmember Andrew Lewis, grew the most, boundary adjustments had to be made to reflect that growth and redistribute populations in council districts more equitably.

COMMUNITY CONCERNS

Throughout the process, Magnolia organizations such as the Community Council and the Chamber of Commerce have protested proposals to divide Magnolia into more than one council district, in this case districts 6 and 7, and separate the neighborhood from Queen Anne.

One of the earlier map proposals had Magnolia split into districts 6 and 7, dividing Magnolia Village in the process. In response, more than

3,000 comments were submitted to the redistricting committee voicing their disapproval and recommending the neighborhood be kept whole. At the beginning of October, it looked like those arguments worked as the redistricting committee approved an amended map that kept Magnolia together. Commissioners reconsidered that map in the last month, and the final map approved and submitted to the county Nov. 15 entailed splitting Magnolia into two, but keeping Magnolia Village whole.

At last week’s Magnolia Community Council meeting, members discussed how successful an appeal to the map could be and how MCC could

5 lessons from the for-profit senior living world

Irecently attended the Senior Housing News BUILD conference in Chicago, which focused on for-profit providers. As CEO of a nonprofit provider, I was intrigued by hearing what industry leaders on the other side of the aisle had to say. Here are just a few of the gems that stuck with me:

• From Jack Callison, CEO of Sunrise Senior Living: Paraphrasing his inspiring message, the “industry” needs to flip its paradigm from “How can we fix you?” (i.e. we can support you through any chronic conditions, cognitive changes, mobility changes) to “What do you aspire to?”

I love how this directly combats ageist mindsets and challenges both providers and residents to think differently about their aging journeys.

• Also from Jack Callison, again paraphrasing: “Yes is the answer, what is your question?”

This gets to the heart of how a senior living community can help its residents achieve their true potentials. No matter where we are in life, if we can start with “yes” as the answer to our own aspirational questions and then figure out pathways to a solution, we can create the blueprint for a fulfilling life.

• Take care of your staff! Beyond wages and benefits, how can a senior living community create supportive environments for staff? We know how to care for our residents, but how are we caring for our staff? How are we supporting

them through the challenging though gratifying work they do?

We heard lots of interesting ideas around designing spaces for staff restoration and rejuvenation.

• Build for intergenerational connections. Creating opportunities for older adults and younger generations to engage and learn from each can be profound in its impact to everyone.

Brenda Bacon, the inspiring leader from Brandywine communities, shared a similar intergenerational philosophy driving her organization’s endeavors. We love our Intergenerational Children’s Center at Bayview, and it’s exciting to see how more opportunities to develop and support intergenerational relationships are growing in senior living in innovative ways.

• Learn from your differences! It’s easy to have an us versus them mindset in anything and everything we do. The learning happens when we reach across the aisle and celebrate our differences (non-profit versus for-profit in this case) while appreciating the thread that unites our better selves and our humanity.

And on that note, wishing all Queen Anne & Magnolia News readers a meaningful and joyful holiday season.

She met the love of her life, Thomas Roach, while they both attended the University of Puget Sound. They were happily married until his passing in 2004. She worked as a reference librarian with both the city and the county for over 23 years until she retired and became even more active than during her working years. Liz had a strong faith and attended Magnolia United Church of Christ since the fourth grade and sang in the church choir and was a founding member of the Magnolia Chorale Choir. She was a life-long, passionate learner, reading, taking classes and traveling well into her retirement. She had numerous hobbies including gardening, old time radio clubs, attending plays and book clubs and cooking for the homeless.

STUDENTS MARCH

AT CITY HALL TO PROTEST VIOLENCE

In protest of the recent shooting death

violence throughout the country, students

walkout on Nov. 14.

Ingraham junior Saeran Dewar helped organize the protest. She is the president of her local Students Demand Action and helped found Ingraham for Gun Safety in response to the Uvalde school shooting.

“Instead of feeling helpless, we helped students mobilize to do something tangible,” she said.

The students were joined by elected officials, local media outlets and representatives from Alliance for Gun Responsibility and Brady United in the march. “It was really moving to see such a large show of support and to see students so empowered,” Dewar said.

A vegan dish for holiday diners

Courtesy Metro Creative Services

The holiday season has arrived, and that often means entertaining family and friends while serving tasty meals. When cooking for a crowd, it is important to recognize that individuals might have certain dietary restrictions due to health or personal beliefs, and to plan accordingly.

A greater number of people are eschewing meat and animal products for various reasons. Preparing offerings for vegan guests doesn’t have to be complicated. This recipe for “Nut Roast” from “Vegan Cooking for Beginners” (Publications International, Ltd.) by the PIL editors is like a meat loaf without the meat. It’s filling and hearty.

NUT ROAST

Makes 6 to 8 servings

• 6 tablespoons boiling water

• 2 tablespoons ground flaxseed

• 1 ½ cups unsalted walnuts, pecans, almonds or cashews

• 2 tablespoons olive oil

• 1 onion, finely chopped

• 4 ounces cremini mushrooms (about 6 large), sliced

• 2 cloves garlic, minced

• 1 can (about 14 ounces) diced toma-

toes

• 1 cup old-fashioned oats

• 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour or chickpea flour

• 1 tablespoon chopped fresh sage

• 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley

• 1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme

• Salt and black pepper

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray 8-by-4-inch loaf pan with nonstick cook-

ing spray. Combine boiling water and flaxseed in small bowl. Let stand until cool.

2. Place nuts in food processor. Pulse until finely chopped, allowing some larger pieces to remain. Transfer to large bowl.

3. Heat oil in medium skillet over medium heat. Add onion, mushrooms and garlic; cook and stir 3 minutes or until softened. Transfer mixture to bowl with nuts.

4. Stir in flaxseed mixture, tomatoes, oats, flour, sage, parsley, thyme, salt, and pepper until combined. Spoon mixture into prepared pan. Bake 45 to 50 minutes or until firm and browned. Cool slightly before slicing.

Featuring Tchaikovsky’s timeless score performed by the world famous PNB Orchestra; PNB Company dancers in show-stopping roles; bright young stars from the PNB School; uniqueto-Seattle sets and costumes by Ian Falconer (creator of Olivia the Pig); and McCaw Hall’s lobbies decked out with the season’s best photo ops, PNB’s production is a holiday treasure for audiences young and old.

George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker runs for 35 performances, Friday through Dec. 27 at Seattle Center’s McCaw Hall (321 Mercer St.). Tickets start at $27.

The Nutcracker will also stream digitally from Dec. 19 through Dec. 27. Tickets for digital access are $49.

For tickets and additional information, contact the PNB Box Office at 206-441-2424, or online at PNB.org, or in person at 301 Mercer St.

PNB is happy to offer a sensory-friendly matinee of The Nutcracker on Tuesday, Dec. 20, designed to provide a welcoming and supportive environment for people with sensory-processing challenges to enjoy the performance with family and friends. Modified lighting and sound levels, allowance of devices and fidgets, entry/exit privileges, trained staff and designated quiet and activity areas will be offered at the performance.

aid in the process.

While MCC can’t file an appeal, members agreed the funds raised would be used to support any residents who wish to join a lawsuit challenging the district map and could also be used to help pay for legal fees.

“While we cannot say with 100 percent certainty that a request for a review will be successful, we believe that we have a good foundation for a complaint based on the simple fact that the final map does not meet the outlined charter guidelines,” according to an email the MCC sent to its newsletter subscribers.

THE RULES FOR REDRAWING

According to the City Charter, rules for redrawing districts state, among other things:

“Boundaries shall be drawn to make districts that are as compact as possible and geographically contiguous.”

“Districts shall not be gerrymandered, and population data may not be used for purposes of favoring or disfavoring any racial group or political party.”

“To the extent practical, new boundaries should/shall follow existing district boundaries.”

“To the extent feasible, new boundaries shall follow recognized waterways and geographic boundaries.”

“To the extent possible, new boundaries shall preserve Seattle communities and neighborhoods.”

As of Nov. 15, MCC’s fundraising campaign has generated about $7,000, including pledges.

“In just over four days, we have raised roughly half of what is needed to retain legal representation to petition for a review of the map,” according to the MCC newsletter. “MCC and additional community volunteers have been working round the clock to pull together information for our petition, meet with prospective attorneys and appellants, and review all options available to us.”

The newsletter stipulates, however, that if a challenge to the map does not move forward, any money donated will be refunded through the MCC’s PayPal account and mailed checks will not be cashed.

To read more from MCC, or to donate, visit mailchi. mp/3c5b5c4699ea/commission-ignores-redistricting-public-commentshere-are-next-steps. People can also reach out to the MCC about joining the efforts by emailing Magnoliacommunityclub@gmail.com.

CHAMBER CONVERSATIONS

While the Magnolia Chamber of Commerce is interested in seeing if a formal challenge is launched before the end of the month and is supportive of whatever MCC chooses to do, spokesperson Ann Goos said the chamber is prepared to accept the final map results. She said chamber

representatives will begin conversations with different organizations and representatives in District 6 in the coming weeks so the chamber can continue advocating and supporting Magnolia businesses regardless of their council district.

“Businesses, I think, are pretty much always going to be a pragmatic interest group,” Goos said. “They want to do business, and they want to be able to do business easily.”

She said the greatest hope is that whomever the two council members representing those two districts are, that they can work together to best serve their constituents.
