CELEBRATING EASTER

This weekend, Queen Anne Community Center hosted its annual Spring Egg Hunt. The photo shows neighbors of all ages lined up waiting for the main event. At 10 a.m., the horn sounded and the hunt began. Kids dashed out into the playfields and gathered as many eggs as their baskets could carry. Children were grouped by ages and any kids that did not find eggs were greeted by staff and volunteers handing out extra candy. After the egg hunt, families went inside to take photos with the Bunny, make arts and crafts, and claim their special prizes.

Celebrate 35 years of harmony and friendship

with Magnolia Chorale

On Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5, Magnolia Chorale will celebrate 35 years of entertaining Seattle audiences with two special concerts themed: “Celebrating the Past. Building the Future.”

Directed by Joseph To, the 35th anniversary repertoire combines many favorites

from the group’s past years, with a few new favorites. Audiences will be treated to a new piece commissioned just for the occasion from local composer Theresa Redmond. With selections ranging from Mozart to the Beatles, from Ave Verum Corpus to Eatnemen Vuelie, the Chorale’s range of musical styles will be on full display.

To, who is just finishing his second year as the Chorale’s music director is looking forward to directing a mixture of old and new.

“I am excited for our 35th anniversary celebration and connecting with the community that has supported us all these years,” To said. “I’m especially excited to meet the Chorale’s former singers, directors, accompanists, and friends, old and new.”

SATURDAY GALA AND SUNDAY MATINEE CONCERTS

As always there will be Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon concerts. However, this year the Saturday evening concert will be a “Gala” event presented at Pilgrim Hall, Magnolia United Church of Christ, 3555 W. McGraw St. The event starts at 6:30 p.m., giving the audience a chance to enjoy catered appetizers, desserts, and beverages as they mingle with current and past Chorale members and staff before taking a seat. Due to limited capacity, tickets for the Saturday concert must be purchased online in advance at magnoliachorale.org.

On Sunday, May 5 at 2 p.m., the Chorale will perform at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, 2330 Viewmont Way W. Church of the Ascension was the Chorale’s first rehearsal venue and was the site of many of its concerts over the years. The Sunday concert will follow a more traditional format with desserts and refreshments at intermission, along with a chance to catch up with Magnolia Chorale members and staff past and present. Sunday tickets are available online and at the door. Magnolia Chorale is an independent organization and is not affiliated with any of the venues

where it rehearses or performs, but is most grateful for their hospitality.

35 YEARS IN THE MAKING

Magnolia Chorale was started by a group of singers who first met in rehearsals for Skillings and Johnson’s A Celebration of Hope performed in 1979, and again in 1989 at Church of the Ascension. Singers from other churches in Magnolia, Queen Anne, and Ballard joined with Ascension’s choir and developed friendships that eventually led to creating a community choir — Magnolia Chorale.

Planning began in summer 1989, among founding members Don Austin (Magnolia Chorale’s first music director), Carolyn Scheuer, and Pat Gaffney. Gaffney is still singing with the group in the 35th Anniversary concerts.

Rehearsals started right after Labor Day at Church of the Ascension. After several weeks of rehearsal, the Chorale presented its inaugural season of concerts directed by Don Austin and accompanied by pianist Diane Beckman, the first weekend of December 1989.

the parents to make sure we are all making an informed decision,” Rachell C. Olden said. Olden is a District 4 candidate who is a senior product marketing manager at Google.

Other candidates include District 2’s Danielle Gahl, a consultant at Adiutrix Consulting; Sarah Clark, director of policy at the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, and Carol Thompson, an Allen Institute associate director of data integration.

Despite the variety of professions among finalists, candidates shared a dedication to closing opportunity gaps for students from underrepresented and historically marginalized communities.

“You are making sure you are centering voices that might not have easy access to the system or have not traditionally been centered,” Joe Mizrahi said. Mizrahi is secretarytreasurer for UFCW 3000s.

His fellow District 4 finalists echoed their commitment to promoting equity within SPS, including writer and teacher Laura Marie Rivera, Gabriela Gonzalez, a chief data officer for a boat sharing company and Rachelle C. Olden.

The budget remains at the forefront of school board conversations as the window closes to avoid school closures and staff reductions across the district.

“To make those cost cuts we want

to involve the community, gather feedback and try to make the least painful cuts as possible,” Shawn Sullivan, GT School CTO, and District 2 candidate said.

The District 4 director will serve the students and families of eight SPS schools, while the District 2 appointee will represent constituents from 15 public schools. Ultimately, the board will go on to help decide how SPS addresses the district’s $105 million deficit.

Additionally, candidates pledged to increase community involvement and to carry out the director role with Seattle’s families and their children’s futures at the center of their service.

Advocating for necessary increases to mental health resources, accessibility initiatives and STEM programs within public schools, the school board will confront SPS’s economic and community issues head-on in the next year leading up to the November 2025 election.

Directors for Magnolia and Queen Anne in Districts 2 and 4 will be appointed April 3 and take the oath of office at a special April 4 meeting. For more information about Seattle Public School's upcoming board meetings and district director appointments, please refer to the Seattle School Board website.

Lisa Michele Puddy

February 28, 1955 - January 09, 2024

Lisa Michele Puddy, 68, of Seattle, Washington passed away peacefully on January 9, 2024. She was the oldest of 4 children, born to Lavern Puddy and Frances (Creswell) Puddy on February 28, 1955 in Omaha, Nebraska on the Offutt Air Force Base.

She relocated with her parents to Seattle, Washington in 1956 where she later attended Queen Anne High School, and then Burnley School of professional art to pursue a degree in Graphic Design. She went on to provide graphic services to Alaska Airlines & Associates Groceries. Lisa spent the remainder of her professional career assisting her parents in managing their numerous apartment buildings on Queen Anne and Magnolia.

Lisa’s greatest joy was raising her 2 sons and 2 daughters. Lisa’s undeniable love, encouragement, and support of her children was never in short supply. Lisa was also known for welcoming all into her home where they could find the same compassion and never-ending support she had for her children waiting for them; serving and shaping the lives of many.

Lisa lived a lifetime full of creating meaningful, long-lasting friendships wherever she went. Those who knew Lisa can attest to her quick witted charm, her bright smile that filled up a room, her magnetic personality, and generous soul.

Lisa was an avid gardener, finding joy in perusing nurseries searching for plants that needed a tender touch to bring them back to life. Her home on Magnolia could be found surrounded by vibrant landscaping, providing a haven to her favorite bird, the hummingbird. She also found enjoyment in traveling, dancing at the Little Red Hen, attending shows at the Paramount Theatre with family and friends, and accompanying her parents to the Seattle Opera.

Lisa lives on through her children, Amanda Marie Ragsdale (Husband Sam), Joshua Buchanan Puddy-Montague, Matthew Ryan Hamilton, and Melissa Sue Hamilton. She is survived by a long list of people who loved her, including, but not limited to: her father LaVern Puddy, 3 nieces, and 1 nephew. In passing she joins her mother, Frances Manone Puddy, and her siblings R. Scott Puddy, Linda Lucile Puddy, and Paige Marie Puddy-McHugh.

The family held a private Celebration of Life, honoring her life and the impression she left on the world. Lisa will be laid to rest at the Puddy family plot located within Mount. Pleasant Cemetery on Queen Anne.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that you please donate, in memory of Lisa Puddy, to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center http://engage.fredhutch.org/goto/LisaPuddy

Come sit with us awhile & share our sorrow. Though you weep, share too, the joyful memories. Look in your heart; in truth you weep for that which has been your delight. For joy and sorrow are inseparable.

Accessorize your food with a spring salsa

Alittle of this, a little of that, with inspiration from the springtime farmers market: A salsa is more than a red or green sauce drizzled over a taco. Salsas are wonderful mashes of garden herbs, sweet and spicy peppers, aromatics and citrus. Delightfully fresh and usually raw, salsas provide brightness and zing to an assortment of meats, fish, vegetables and grains.

Mellow green garlic and juicy sweet Meyer lemons rule this springtime salsa. They are blitzed together in a chunky sauce with green chiles and leafy herbs. The key to a good salsa is to hit all the flavor components, and this salsa does just that: Sweet and sharp citrus, laced with skulking chile heat, mingles with spring garlic.

Green garlic is available in early spring at the markets. It resembles a thick scallion with the unmistakable pungency of garlic, but without the bite typically found in mature bulbs. The newest stalks have small, baby bulbs, which are tender and edible, along with the green leaves when the garlic is young. As the garlic matures, the green stalks will toughen like a leek, in which case the stalks should be omitted.

Meyer lemon is another springtime star. Unlike the ubiquitous Eureka, Meyers have an edible rind, and the whole lemon can be added to the salsa. Coarsely chop the lemon and nick away any small seeds. Add the lemon and any juices to the bowl. Meyers are fruity, bright and less puckery than Eureka lemons and add a wonderful citrusy freshness.

This salsa is extremely versatile. It's a brilliant accompaniment to fish

and light meats, as well as roasted and grilled vegetables and potatoes. You can also toss chopped cooked potatoes with a generous amount of the salsa for a green and fresh potato salad. A few tips: If green garlic is not available, substitute 2 to 3 scallions and one garlic clove. Remember to taste the jalapeno and poblano before adding, as they can vary in heat, then adjust the amounts to your taste.

MEYER LEMON SALSA

Active time: 10 minutes

Total time: 10 minutes

Yield: Makes about 1 1/2 cups

▶ 2 green garlics, white and pale green parts and tender green leaves, chopped

▶ 1 small Meyer lemon, chopped, seeded

▶ 1 small poblano pepper, seeded, chopped

▶ 1 small jalapeno pepper, seeded, chopped (optional)

▶ 1 cup packed Italian parsley leaves and tender sprigs

▶ 1/2 cup packed cilantro leaves and tender sprigs

▶ eaves

1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil

▶ 1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt, or to taste

▶ 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Combine all the ingredients in a food processor. Process until you have a chunky salsa consistency. Add more oil for a looser consistency, if desired. Taste for seasoning. The salsa can be stored in the refrigerator for up to one day.

Sound Transit given $68.9M federal grant for south King County bus stations

Sound Transit has been awarded a $68.9 million grant by the U.S. Department of Transportation to fund the design and construction of two planned stations in Tukwila and Renton on the new Stride Rapid Transit, or BRT, line on Interstate 405 South – dubbed S1 – in King County, Washington.

The grant comes as the bus network is struggling to find drivers and ridership slowly creeps back up to pre-COVID-19 levels.

The award was the sole capital

construction grant handed out in Washington state as part of this year’s round of $3.3 billion in funding, announced March 13 by USDOT.

The federal money – awarded via the Neighborhood Access and Equity program under the umbrella of USDOT’s Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhoods program – will support the Tukwila International Boulevard Stride BRT Station, including pedestrian bridges over State Route 518, as well as the BRT South Renton Transit Center, including transit signal prioritization, bus-only lanes, and

bicycle and pedestrian amenities.

The goal of the project is to create a multimodal hub, dubbed a Transit Oriented Development site, in the center of the community.

The voter-approved Stride rapid transit program includes plans for three bus lines. In addition to S1 from Burien to Bellevue, S2 will run from Bellevue to Lynnwood, and S3 will serve the growing north Lake Washington communities from Shoreline and Seattle to Bothell.

The Stride project has been criticized for multiple delays due to construction-related challenges, including higher costs and slower

procurement timeframes.

The combined budget for the Stride BRT program is $2.35 billion, according to Sound Transit, which is a 14% increase over the initial cost estimate.

“Sound Transit pursues grant funding to help pay for voterapproved projects,” Sound Transit public information officer Rachelle Cunningham told The Center Square in an email. “As is the case with projects around the region and state, cost estimates for Stride BRT program have increased, and this NAE grant will help pay for some of the additional costs.”

Savvy Senior: Best cell phones for seniors

Dear Savvy Senior,

Can you recommend some good cell phones for seniors? My 79-year-old mother needs to get a new mobile phone and has asked me to help her find one that she would like. Searching Daughter

Dear Searching,

For older adults, choosing a cell phone is not a one-size-fits-all proposition. Some seniors love the latest high-tech smartphones with highmegapixel cameras, while others prioritize simple phones with basic functions. So, the best cell phone for your mom will depend on her comfort with technology, priorities and budget.

BEST CELL PHONES

To help identify the best cell phones for older adults, I consulted Wirecutter, a product testing and recommendation service from The New York Times who recently tested 18 cell phone models. Their testing focus was on three different areas, including best phones for older adults who are comfortable with technology and want to upgrade to a full-featured smartphone with robust accessibility settings; best cell phones for seniors who are not tech-inclined or who prefer a smartphone with fewer features, as well as those who are experiencing vision, hearing, or dexterity issues; and best cell phones for elderly seniors who need specific accessibility features due to physical or cognitive issues. Here are their top choices based on their tests.

Apple iPhone 15 Plus: This is a great choice if

your mom is comfortable with technology and willing to spend more for a top-tier smartphone with a range of accessibility, health, and safety features. The 15 Plus has an easy-to-read, large (6.7-inch) screen and the most robust health and safety features, including an off-grid SOS, a personal-safety check, and plenty of customizable accessibility options that help seniors with vision and hearing loss, as well as with speaking and/or dexterity problems. ($899, apple.com).

Google Pixel 8: If your mom has been using an Android device and is more comfortable with this operating system, the Pixel 8 is a high-end, reasonably priced smartphone that tops their list for older adults. It too has a sharp, large (6.7inch) screen with an excellent camara and many health, safety, and accessibility features that can help seniors with vision impairment, hearing loss, hand tremors and more. And it costs significantly less than the new Samsung Galaxy and iPhone models. ($699, store.google.com).

Lively Jitterbug Smart4: If your mom wants a simplified smartphone that’s very affordable, she might prefer this model. Like the Apple 15 Plus and Google Pixel 8, the Jitterbug Smart4 also has a 6.7-inch screen, but this phone comes with a list-based menu (no icons) that provides easy navigation. It also offers voice commands capabilities, and a number of health and safety services including a 24/7 emergency monitoring service. This phone would also work well for people with memory or vision issues. ($150, lively.com).

RAZ Mobility Memory Cell Phone: This phone is specifically designed for seniors with memory issues or more-advanced cognitive decline. Its uncluttered, simple functionality allows users to stay in touch with family and friends while also reducing common problems such as unnecessary calls to emergency services, spam, and fraud. It also has a dedicated SOS link on the screen that can alert up to three contacts; has GPS tracking capabilities; provides caregiver controls and more. ($349, razmobility.com).

Snapfon ez4G: This is a non-smartphone if your mom doesn’t want or need all the functionality of a full-featured smartphone. This simple cell phone provides large buttons, big screen type and an SOS emergency button on the back of the phone that will alert up to five preselected contacts by call and text. ($100, snapfon.com).
