Keeping up with the Jones, Seattle artist returns to the stage by Laura Marie Rivera

Jones Talmadge has returned to Seattle and will be gracing the stage at The Triple Door Theater with the cast of Bohemia, opening Thursday, Jan. 18. Jones grew up in Mill Creek and Everett and says he is feeling really blessed to be welcomed back to his home city.

After earning a degree in Theater and Dance from the University of Washington, Jones set out to make it big in New York City. His very first audition was for the famed Cirque du Soleil. He did not land the part that day, but it definitely planted the seed. Jones said he was excited by the company because “it had the physical side, really trained

circus artists, and lots of character actors.” He spent two years in NYC then decided to try his hand in Los Angeles, where he even founded his own theater company. He worked as a performer and as a director. And met the love of his life, Anne-Marie Talmadge.

The Magnolia Chamber of Commerce is holding an information meeting on the 15th Ave NW & W and Ballard Bridge Safety and Paving project (the project) with the Seattle Department of Transportation from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17. The meeting will provide an opportunity for SDOT to explain the project that will create traffic challenges at different times for those entering 15th Ave W., primarily from the Emerson Street and Dravus Street bridges. Attendees will be able to ask questions from SDOT officials and seek a better understanding of traffic management in anticipation of lane closures, varying construction hours, and how SDOT plans to manage traffic in and out of Magnolia, primarily for those traveling on 15th Ave W & NW in and out of Magnolia. The project is part of the Levy to Move Seattle, passed by voters in 2015. The project will be one of the last projects funded by the nine-year levy, which is set to expire this year. The project aims to restore the road condition of a critical piece of Seattle's transportation network, extend the useful life of one of Seattle's busiest streets and bridges, and contribute to a safer and more comfortable travel experience for all road users. Please RSVP to Jason Thibeaux, Executive Director, at jason@ discovermagnolia.org to get the venue details.

Bill would allow Washington Legislature to ban political candidates By TJ Martineli The Center Square

A Washington bill introduced this session would give the state Legislature and the Secretary of State the power to ban a political candidate from appearing on a ballot in the state. House Bill 2150, sponsored by Rep. Kristine Reeves, D-Federal Way, sets up a process by which the Legislature and SOS can disqualify a candidate based on their interpretation of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which prohibits anyone from running for office who previously “shall

have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same (United States), or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.” However, the bill also considers a candidate to be disqualified “who has been convicted of, or charged with and not yet acquitted of, any state or federal crime arising from actions taken while serving as a state or federal officer, whether or not those actions were taken in the course of official duties.” This section would be interpreted in conformity “with relevant court decisions interpreting that section.” If passed, the bill could allow the Legislature to remove former President

Donald Trump, who is running for the office again and is currently facing several criminal charges though none regarding insurrection. The bill would require political candidates to sign an oath created by SOS attesting that they are eligible to run. The Legislature would authorized to send a resolution to SOS by a simple majority vote requesting that a candidate be removed from the ballot and must “clearly state the grounds on which the legislature believes the candidate is or may be ineligible, citing the relevant provision or provisions of law.” The SOS would then

be able to issue an order removing the candidate, or deny the request. However, the Legislature would still have the authority to remove a candidate by a two-thirds vote. A political candidate would be able to appeal the decision in Thurston County Superior Court. When asked for comment on the bill, SOS Deputy Director of External Affairs Derrick Nunnally wrote that the proposal would constitute a significant expansion of their responsibilities, as "it would require the Secretary of State to move from an administrative role in elections to a determinative

one, since there would be a new responsibility to decide the eligibility of everyone who files for a state or federal office." According to Nunnally, SOS would have to determine the eligibility for 375 elected offices. Additionally, he noted that the timeframe between filing dates and printing deadlines for ballots would "present a significant challenge to making those eligibility determinations – especially if any substantial degree of research is involved." HB 2150 has been referred to the State Government & Tribal Relations Committee, but is not scheduled for any public hearing.

Behind the Glass continues By Laura Marie Rivera Contributing Writer

Behind the Glass is an art show that just opened at Seattle Center's A/NT Gallery. Queen Anne resident and multidisciplinary artist Casy Ailes uses repetition and the hyper focus of a single image of a penguin to center the viewer's attention on the plight of animals in our ever changing world. The series depicts the life of a penguin through the thick aquarium glass as a metaphor for how the penguin is trapped in the ever-changing waters of today's world. Ailes says she not only wants to see penguins behind glass. "Seeing penguins in the wild is paramount to me." From the thousands of penguin images she has captured, Ailes selected this one from the Woodland Park Zoo because she was captivated by the way that it glides both above and below the surface. "It has the action of the swimming, the blue, the white, everything," she said. She then went to work with her recycled canvasses and hundreds and hundreds of prints. The acrylic paint

"I push the medium using subtractive painting techniques until the penguin's presence is no longer intact,” Ailes said.

The show will be up until Jan. 26 at A/NT Gallery 305 Harrison St. They are open Wednesday to Sunday from 11 a.m.-6 p.m.

JONES from Page 1Æ Jones has gone by many names throughout his career, and he is proud to have adopted his wife’s last name, Talmadge. Ann-Marie is a dancer, business manager, and an aerial pole champion. While living in Los Angeles and working on his own projects, he finally got his dream job offer from Cirque du Soleil. Jones was invited to join X: The Land of Fantasy. Hired as a physical theater artist (aka Clown) for the production, he later became an acrobat for the flying act. Some of those skills will be on display in Seattle starting this week. Presented by Opal Peachey and Mark Siano, Bohemia is a show filled with live music, dance, burlesque, comedy, and naughty fun. The cabaret stars use classical music and original songs to tell the story of love, art nouveau, absinthe and fairies. Jones will be playing the role of Sergei, the Green Fairy. In addition to the regular business of being a triple threat (singing, dancing, and acting), Jones will also be showing off his comedy and acrobatic skills. The production is reimagined to make the show a new experience for audiences that come year after year. “With the addition of a special talent like Jones, we added a new dance number to feature his unique

Once upon a time, Jones performed in The Habit comedy group that Siano founded. And when Jones confided that he wanted to return to the Seattle stage,

Siano said, “Have I got a show for you!” And he even gave the actor a place to stay in Queen Anne. Jones said he is truly grateful to come home and jump back into the Seattle art scene. “Mark and Opal have this really good history of creating brilliant

Protecting your garden from frost

F

reezes used to be fewer and briefer, at least in my memory over the last 15 years growing in Seattle. Now they seem to come both earlier and later than expected, whomping gardeners when we’re not looking. They also seem to linger longer. Seattle is now classified as United States Department of Agriculture Hardiness Zone 9B. I’m going to say to consider plants labeled Zone 7 and below as the safest choices regarding cold. Many such plants can hack frost or sitting in snow and bounce back without blinking – even the tiniest viola sometimes. Some borderline plants, too, if established and with enough soil surrounding them, can rebound from a flash freeze that lasts a night or two. However, when freezing temperatures extend close to a week, without any respite of warming up during the daytime, that’s when even old reliables may give in. PLANTS ESPECIALLY VULNERABLE TO FROST: Any plant, no matter how technically Erica Browne Grivas cold hardy, in a small or shallow container Get Growing relative to the plant’s roots. Let’s say less than 20 gallons. The less soil surrounding the roots, the more likely they are to freeze and die. Solution: Gather these plants and take them inside to an unheated space like a shed or garage. Alternatively, corral them in a large tub and surround by leaves or evergreen boughs and move against your house where its warmer. Water well, wrap and cover the top. Breathable fabric like “Remay” frost cloth/row cover, coffee bags, or burlap can be left on for many weeks. Plastic sheeting needs to be removed after the frost event to allow air and rain to reach the plant. LESS HARDY PLANTS (ZONE 8 AND HIGHER) IN A CONTAINER Such as aloes, daphnes, bananas, hebes, New Zealand flax (Phormium), abutilons, tender salvias, geraniums (Pelargoniums). Solution: Gather these plants and take them inside or corral them in a larger tub and surround by leaves or evergreen boughs and move against your house where its warmer. Water well, wrap and cover the top of the plant. Breathable fabric like “Remay” frost cloth/row cover, coffee bags, or burlap can be left on for many weeks. Plastic sheeting needs to be removed after the frost event to allow air and rain to reach the plant. FLOWERS BLOOMING TOO EARLY Plants that were tricked by unseasonable December temperatures in the 50s to start blooming are in a rough situation here, but it should mainly affect the flowers. If the plant is strong enough, like a mature magnolia tree, it should survive, although you may sacrifice some of this year’s blooms. PREPPING STRATEGIES Once you’ve decided which plants are staying outside, and you’ve wrapped them, make sure any plants that have been stressed, are still establishing (have been in your yard less than two years) and all the plants in pots get a good drink. Once the soil around the plants freezes, it’s hard for the plants roots to take in water. If you have any extra fall leaves, Christmas tree trimmings or fern boughs, pile them around your pots or smaller establishing plants in the ground for some bonus insulation. If snow comes, be ready to brush off heavy accumulations on shrubs and smaller trees – it can cause breakage. Now unhook and drain your hoses, cover the faucets, turn over birdbaths or empty ceramic vessels so they don’t freeze – and get inside. To continue giving water to your birds you can put out warm water each midday and/or put “handwarmer” packets or holiday lights on your feeders to keep them from freezing. (As always, it’s crucial to clean bird feeders weekly to prevent cultivating bacteria and disease.) You now have permission to wrap yourself in some hot cocoa and seed catalogs.

Public comment sought on the development of the Puget Sound Salmon Recovery Plan Addendum Staff Report

The Puget Sound Partnership is seeking public input on the development of the Puget Sound Salmon Recovery Plan (Recovery Plan) Addendum, an update to the regional chapter of the Recovery Plan. The goal of this Addendum is to guide the Puget Sound regional salmon recovery organization’s salmon recovery actions over the next ten years. The Addendum includes strategies and actions to move salmon recovery forward, an overview of the region’s role in advancing environmental justice, funding strategies for implementing the Addendum, descriptions of key recovery partners and their role as implementers, and a monitoring and adaptive management framework. The Partnership seeks to develop a succinct, impactful document, with clear regional action that will enhance and accelerate the watersheds’ work on the ground. To achieve this outcome requires input and guidance from the Puget Sound community. The public comment period is open until Feb. 21. The Puget Sound community has an opportunity to provide feedback on the Puget Sound Salmon Recovery Plan Addendum through an online platform and by submitting letters. Letters can be sent via email to Ashley Bagley, salmon policy advisor at the Puget Sound Partnership at ashley. bagley@psp.wa.gov. Seattle Women’s Chorus turns the page on book bans with Banned & Beloved Concert Submitted

Seattle Women’s Chorus is singing music that makes a difference with Banned & Beloved, a new concert featuring custom-composed songs based on banned books, with performances at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3 at Town Hall Seattle (1109 8th Avenue in Seattle’s First Hill neighborhood). With books being banned in the U.S. at an unprecedented rate, Seattle Women’s Chorus is putting a spotlight on the issue by commissioning five female-identifying composers to create new music from banned books. Composers Amy Burgess, Ann Hampton Callaway, Michael Bussewitz-Quarm, Maria Antoinette Ellis, and Andrea Ramsey each crafted songs based on a variety of banned books including Alice in Wonderland, Beloved, Heather Has Two Mommies, Melissa and This Book is Gay. The concert will also include censored songs from popular films including The Wizard of Oz, Winnie the Pooh and The Muppets, along with thought-provoking video storytelling. To elevate awareness of banned books and to advocate for freedom of expression, Seattle Women’s Chorus is inviting attendees to donate a banned book which will be collected in bins at the concert – as well as at any Third Place Books location now through Feb. 3. The books will be distributed among Seattle-area Little Free Libraries. For a list of commonly banned books, visit this list compiled by PEN America. Tickets for the Banned & Beloved concert – as well as livestream and on-demand tickets – are available for purchase ($29-$59) at SeattleWomensChorus.org.

Mayor Harrell advancing improved Fort Lawton redevelopment plan Submitted

Mayor Bruce Harrell has announced that the City of Seattle is advancing efforts to develop an improved redevelopment plan for increased affordable housing at Fort Lawton, a former military installation currently owned by the U.S Army and available at a significantly discounted land cost for dedicated use as affordable housing or parks. The proposed plan will include rental units, workforce housing, and homeownership opportunities, as well as permanent supportive housing for veterans and seniors who have experienced homelessness. The city will be working with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Army as it seeks to move forward on this proposed revision. Building on an earlier redevelopment plan that was approved by City Council in 2019 and then delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, an improved plan would build as many as 500 units of affordable housing, optimizing the number of affordable homes to address Seattle’s housing crisis, while significantly lowering per-unit costs. These additional units offset some of the considerable infrastructure costs required for the project while maintaining 22 acres for open space, parkland, and wildlife conservation adjacent to Seattle’s majestic Discovery Park. “The scale of our affordability and homelessness crises requires us to make the wisest possible use of our limited housing dollars in order to achieve the largest possible impact,” said Mayor Bruce Harrell. “In a city of 84 square miles, the Fort Lawton Redevelopment Plan is a unique opportunity to transform 34 into a new community that will last for generations – we must make the most of it. This is our One Seattle vision in action – a city with affordable homes and communities where every Seattle neighbor can access the good jobs, schools, and supports needed to grow and succeed.” Catholic Housing Services and Habitat for Humanity Seattle-King and Kittitas Counties are the developers for the plan, and United Indians of All Tribes will be the service provider for the permanent supportive housing at Fort Lawton. The plan would use previously approved zoning capacity to bring affordable housing to the Magnolia area, providing access to housing, education, retail, and employment opportunities not typically available in this neighborhood to lower income families and individuals. Harrell began working with City departments and outside consultants after taking office in 2022 to analyze infrastructure needs and costs for the 2019 Fort Lawton Redevelopment Plan. The property requires major infrastructure construction, demolition of unsafe buildings, and upgrades to roads, power, water, and sewers – challenges that have been a leading cause of planning and project delays over the years. The additional analysis conducted by the City since 2022 revealed opportunities to reduce per-unit infrastructure costs not only by increasing the number of units but by altering the approach to street and other infrastructure improvements.
