EXPLORE SEATTLE: GEORGETOWN

From tasting to making beer, Georgetown has variety of options

The Rainier Brewing Company looms figuratively and historically over the Georgetown neighborhood, just 10 min-

utes south of downtown Seattle. Georgetown was once home to Seattle’s first brewing company, when Washington was still a U.S. territory. It has seen many incarnations of industrialization and revitalization through the years and is currently enjoying a sweet spot.

Greg Ramirez, chair of the Georgetown Community Council, has lived in the neighborhood his entire life. “The community here is the cool thing,” he said. “We have a really friendly vibe. And then

you throw in the food and nightlife. Even with all of the challenges, it’s still the place I want to live and raise my family.”

He highlights the growing number of families and businesses in the area. And says that it’s great to see people able to walk around the neighborhood and enjoy all that Georgetown has to offer.

Seattle ‘ambassadors’ renewal

The Seattle City Council has passed the Downtown Seattle Metropolitan Improvement District renewal, which

is anticipated to collect $18.3 million next year for services intended to improve the area.

The district’s ratepayers will see the total property tax levy rate stay at 37 cents per $1,000 assessed value. How-

ever, the additional assessment ceiling of a property’s land and building dimensions will increase.

The additional land square feet ceiling increases to 45 cents per square foot and a

property’s additional building square foot ceiling increases to 24 cents.

As a result of the boost in ceiling rates, the 10-year

Since launching, passengers have used Trailhead Direct for more than 67,000 hikes, including 11,500 hikes in 2022.

The Seattle Department of Transportation will provide funding generated by the voter-approved Seattle Transit Measure to support Trailhead Direct this summer.

This summer, Trailhead Direct continues to focus the transit-to-trails service on the most popular route with stops at trailheads near Mount Si, Mount Teneriffe and Little Si. Riders can take the bus, Sound Transit Link light rail or bike to get to the Sound Transit Capitol Hill Link station, where Trailhead Direct coaches will depart every 30 minutes. The 2023 season will include service on Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day.

Trailhead Direct launched in 2017 in response to overcrowding at popular trailhead parking lots that frequently exceed their capacity over spring, summer and holiday weekends. The service has become a popular, eco-friendly way to get out of the city and explore the trails of King County.

Trailhead Direct will operate with 14- to 32seat vehicles and will have a rack for either two or three bikes. Passengers can use Metro’s Trip Planner to get more details about transit stops, routes and schedules. Metro’s standard fares apply, and riders can pay with an ORCA card, Transit Go Mobile ticket or cash with exact change. Hikers 18 and younger ride Trailhead Direct for free. Construction this summer will impact the Trailhead Direct stops along Madison Street. Hikers will want to sign up for email or text alerts about King County Metro service to keep track of potential service disruptions.

Passengers are encouraged to check for conditions and updates related to trail accessibility and restrictions before going out and to remember the rules of the trail to ensure a safe trip.

brewery in Washington state and ranked as one of the Top 50 Producing U.S. Craft Brewing Companies last year. It was started in the early 2000s by Manny Chao and Roger Bialous brewing their famous Manny’s Pale Ale in the original Rainier Brewery. They now have their own facility with a tasting room that serves over 20 different beers on tap. The tasting room is open from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. daily and offers beers that you can’t find anywhere else. Beer drinkers can get a pint of their favorite, try a flight of the tasting size ales, or pick up a growler to go. They don’t serve food at the brewery, but customers are welcome to bring food from neighboring restaurants or

even have it delivered. And they always have a non-alcoholic offering on the menu.

General Manager Dave Forrester said that the original Manny’s is still their most popular draft beer, but Bodhizafa IPA is their top seller because it is also available in cans. He has a few personal favorites and said “the fun part is always making more beers and trying things that you wouldn’t usually get to try.”

Paul Hero is the owner of Georgetown’s Sound Homebrew Supply, 6505 Fifth Place S. He bought the business shortly after the pandemic shutdown and has seen a steady stream of business as people try their hand at brewing beer. He said it’s pretty easy and interested people should give it a try.

Metropolitan Improvement District renewal will collect nearly $3 million more from downtown property owners than in the current fiscal year.

Ratepayers include commercial and residential property owners within the Metropolitan Improvement District. Its boundaries will now expand into Downtown Seattle’s neighboring Pioneer Square District. Government-owned properties do not currently pay into the district.

The district is managed by the Downtown Seattle Association, with employees, also known as “ambassadors,” tasked with services such as daily cleaning of downtown streets and sidewalks. The district also allocates its budget towards daily private security patrols within the Metropolitan Improvement District’s 285 square blocks, interactions with Downtown Seattle’s homeless populations and marketing of the downtown area.  Seattle City Councilmember Sara Nelson mentioned in a City Council meeting on May 2 that

bake, you can brew,” he said. They offer classes to learn how to brew your own beer, or you can buy a kit and be on your way. They also sell all of the ingredients, including Yakima hops and malt from Europe.

In addition to the many local breweries, people will find shops, restaurants and businesses steeped in local history.

Martin Imbach, owner of Georgetown Records, 1201 S. Vale St., said he loves the neighborhood because it feels the most like the Seattle that he remembers. He moved to Georgetown in 2000 and opened up a record shop when space became available in the prominent location on Airport Way South. He shares space with Larry Reid of Fantagraphics Bookstore, who sells and publishes comics and

the Metropolitan Improvement District ambassadors also started to carry Narcan with them last summer. Since then, they have administered the narcotic overdose treatment 130 times within the area, Nelson said.

The renewal passed unanimously without pushback from the City Council. District 7 Seattle City Councilmember Andrew Lewis spoke of the program’s importance to Downtown Seattle’s recovery.

“There is no downtown recovery without the renewal of the [Metropolitan Improvement District] and there is no Seattle recovery without the recovery of downtown,” Lewis said at the Seattle City Council meeting on May 2.

Nelson added in a statement following the renewal being passed that without the Metropolitan Improvement District, “there’d be no free summer concerts, no lights in the trees during the holidays, and so many other services and programs that help our businesses thrive and make downtown such a vibrant place to live, work and visit.”

The renewal needs a signature by Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell before it goes into effect.

Shrimp dishes are quite popular. These scouring crustaceans are found in many oceans and come in various sizes.

While most know that shrimp can be tasty, they’re also good to eat for a number of reasons.

Shrimp pack 20 grams of protein into a 3-ounce serving, all

for around 84 calories. Shrimp also contain phosphorous, iodine, magnesium and zinc, which are important minerals for health. In addition, shrimp are rich in DHA and EPA, essential omega-3 fatty acids that can help reduce a person’s risk for heart disease. Also, shrimp may boost cognitive health by way of astaxanthin, an antioxidant that can protect against

free radical damage.

Now that it’s understood why shrimp are beneficial in diets, it is time to explore new shrimp recipes to include into future meals. This recipe for “Camarones al ajillo (Garlic shrimp),” from “Spain: Authentic Regional Recipes” (Fall River Press) by M. Teresa Segura is based on a Spanish peasant dish featuring fresh, plump shrimp and lots

of garlic. Experiment with the amount of garlic to appeal to one’s own taste buds.

Camarones al ajillo (Garlic shrimp)

Serves 4

• 2 pounds raw extra-large shrimp

• Juice of 2 limes

• ½ teaspoon dried oregano

• 6 tablespoons extra-virgin Spanish olive oil

• 8 cloves garlic, finely chopped

• Salt and freshly ground black pepper

• 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

• Lime wedges, to garnish

Remove the heads from the shrimp, but do not peel. Wash and pat dry the shrimp and place in a shallow glass dish. Add the lime juice and oregano. Cover and chill for 2 hours. When ready to cook, heat 2 tablespoons of the olive oil in a skillet and gently fry the garlic for 1 minute, stirring, making sure it does not over brown.

City would be better served by abandoning proposed housing in Discovery Park

As spring blooms and the days grow longer, there’s no better place to be than Discovery Park. Today, Seattle’s natural sanctuary spans more than 500 acres. But before the park became our city’s largest open space 50 years ago, it was known as Fort Lawton.

While most folks are familiar with this history, few are aware that the federal government still retains ownership of a 34-acre parcel just north of the park’s east entrance. There’s not much to see there on Texas Avenue, except empty military buildings, driveways and parking lots. These are the abandoned remnants of the Fort Lawton Army Reserve Center. This is where, back in 2019, the City of Seattle proposed to build 238 units of affordable housing. More than four years later, it still hasn’t happened.

Why hasn’t the project moved forward? For one, the costs to build at Discovery Park are enormous. In 2019, the total projected budget was $93 million. Now, the city estimates the project will cost $145 million, with more than 70 percent of the total being spent on underground improvements — not housing.

The standard underground infrastructure of the type we all take for granted when building on a typical city lot, like sewer, water and adequate drainage systems are absent from this parcel. The

lack of proper drainage is so bad that the parcel’s acres of impervious surfaces cause major rainwater runoff problems for the neighborhoods downhill and just to the north. Not surprisingly, the Army Reserve never built the infrastructure necessary to adequately mitigate this runoff, and the city is stuck with paying for it.

Last fall, torrential rains flowed off the pavement, flooding houses on both sides of West Commodore Way. The stormwater then drained into nearby Salmon Bay, reducing water quality and harming an already stressed salmon population.

But just as alarming, the city’s 2019 plan doesn’t even mention the climate crisis or this project’s irreversible carbon footprint. We believe the city’s outdated plan is bad for Seattle’s climate. It preserves only 13 acres of existing forest and adds zero new forestland. And it would cut down more than 40 significant and exceptional trees currently standing on the parcel, at a time when the city desperately needs more of these large, shadeproducing trees, not less of them.

We at Friends of Discovery Park propose a better path for Seattle. Reforest the remaining Fort Lawton parcel to improve our environment and redirect money from the stalled 2019 plan to build more affordable housing elsewhere at less cost, more quickly.

The Fort Lawton parcel is in a critical location, between two of the largest and most biodiverse greenbelts in Seattle: Discovery Park and Kiwanis Ravine. The cost

of simple demolition and reforesting would be a tiny fraction of the massive infrastructure costs needed to build housing on the site, and the new greenspace would allow rainwater to percolate, not run off. And it would re-connect the rich, biodiverse ecosystems of Salmon Bay, Commodore Park, Kiwanis Ravine and Discovery Park. Not to mention expand our city’s tree canopy, bringing us closer to Seattle’s 30 percent goal by 2037. We at Friends of Discovery Park are happy to raise the $3 million to $4 million estimated cost for such work.

Redirecting that money could pay for more than double the number of affordable housing units than proposed at Fort Lawton. People experiencing homelessness do not have time to wait — rapid housing acquisition and new construction elsewhere would take months, not years.

Reforesting the Fort Lawton parcel presents a once-in-ageneration opportunity to deliver on what we all want for Seattle: greater climate resiliency, carbon sequestration, more affordable housing and expanded tree canopy. Discovery Park’s open spaces give refuge to people and wildlife alike, and its lush forests protect us all from climate change. Seattle should be expanding that most valuable natural resource, not diminishing it.

against a fourth term

Jay Inslee’s decision that he will not be seeking an unprecedented fourth term as the governor of Washington state elicited passionate reactions from political friends and foes alike.

Inslee, a Democrat, is currently the longesttenured governor in the country. He was rst elected to the job in 2012 and subsequently won reelection in 2016 and 2020. Before being elected governor, Inslee served more than a dozen years in Congress. He focused much of his gubernatorial tenure –and his brief 2020 presidential campaign – on his signature issue: ghting climate change.

Democratic politicians and other allies praised the 72-year-old Inslee’s performance as Washington’s governor.

U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, D-Bothell, tweeted, “Congratulations to my friend @GovInslee. You’ve made historic progress for Washington state –whether it was leading the nation on climate, getting us through COVID, or building a stronger economy for everyone. Your leadership has made life better for so many people in our state.”

Senate Majority Leader Andy Billig, D-Spokane, was even more e usive in his praise of Inslee.

“Gov. Inslee has guided Washington on a path to achieve remarkable progress over the past decade. He will be the rst to tell you there are many challenges that remain, and I look forward to continuing our work together over the next year and a half,” Billig said in a news release last week.

Others, however, expressed satisfaction that Inslee’s time as governor is coming to an end.

“It’s time to turn the page on the disastrous Inslee era in Washington state,” Caleb Heimlich, Washington State Republican Party chair, said in a news release. “For over a decade, Governor Inslee has taken our state in the wrong direction. His decision to not seek a fourth term presents an opportunity to elect a Republican governor who will put Washingtonians rst and prioritize the needs of our communities.”

John Spellman was Washington’s last Republican governor serving from 1981 to 1985.

Inslee’s third term as governor ends in January 2025.
