Free and open 365 days a year, the 53-acre Bellevue Botanical Garden (bellevuebotanical.org) is already a treasure giving people access to beauty yearround. Within it is an extraspecial gem that rewards visiting any day of the year: the perennial border.
Entirely maintained by volunteers from the Northwest Perennial Alliance (northwestperennialalliance. org), the border showcases the best of Northwest gardening in a kaleidoscope of color and texture that shi s at least every two weeks, if not daily for the really close observer. e largest volunteer-tended public perennial
garden in the country, it’s been wowing people since the garden opened in 1992. While it’s called a perennial border, the maples, horse chestnuts, and hydrangeas adding seasonal support and structure make it a mixed border. e border was overhauled and nearly doubled in size to 33,000 square feet in 2012 by original designers Glenn Withey and Charles Price, known for their love of color.

PASTA GALORE!
By Ellery Queen Anne Youth reporter
Do you want to know why I am eating pasta tonight? Well, I had the chance to sit down and interview Avery, a rst grader at one of Queen Anne’s local elementary schools. Avery had lots to share about pasta. She told me one of her favorite memories in Queen Anne was the rst time she set foot in La Pasta, a unique pasta shop on Queen Anne Avenue that has fresh pasta and sauces. Check out their Facebook Page: https:// www.facebook.com/LaPastaSeattle/
I’m a big pasta lover myself, but I had never heard of La Pasta before. So, of course that inspired me to give La Pasta a try. When I went in, I discovered it was a farmers-market style store, featuring all locally made items! I decided to buy some of their fresh pasta and fresh sauce. It was amazing! It had a ton of avor in the sauce, and perfect pasta! I 100% recommend it. If you like to visit the Queen Anne Farmers Market on ursdays,
you can search for the La Pasta stand. And if Avery is not eating La Pasta noodles, then she’s ordering a “secret” menu item of buttered noodles at Betty, our local beloved bistro style restaurant on the Ave.
When Avery is not munching on pasta, she is a big fan of the Arts. She is in an a er-school art class called ‘Trendy Cra s’ and she also participates in an Improv eater class, both at her school. In addition to her a er-school classes, Avery also performs dance at Children’s Dance Workshop located in the Fellowship Hall at the Queen Anne Baptist Church. Children’s Dance Workshop is featuring a brand-new Pom and Cheer class for grades 4th – 8th, as well as creative dance, ballet, jazz and hip-hop. If you’re thinking of someone who would like to join dance visit their website here: https://www.childrensdanceworkshop.com/
As you can see, Avery is very busy and creative! Hopefully you learned something new about Queen Anne or Avery! Falcons on the Hill!

is month we caught up with Beck, an avid reader, lover of soccer and new student at one of our local elementary schools. During our “interview” Beck was sporting a Peregrine Falcon hat, the beginnings of his Halloween costume – in case you miss Beck with his full falcon out t later this fall, check out the tracking of active raptor breeding sites in Seattle by the Urban Raptor Conservancy we Peregrine Falcon (see https:// urbanraptorconservancy.org/ seattle-urban-raptors/falcons/ peregrine-falcon/seattles-peregrines/).
Beck is fan of our local shops, including Molly Moons and of course, family favorite Zeeks (plain cheese only, for Beck please!). Beck is a soccer fan (his favorite Sounders player is homeowner Jordan Morris) and he also plays with the SC Queen Anne soccer league, mentioning he thinks the funniest named team in his league is the Stinky Dogs! Before heading to elementary school, Beck attended
La Escuelta Bilingual School and the Queen Anne Co-op Preschool. (No, we are not paid to mention these local businesses but we would welcome the sponsorship!)
By far the funniest thing Beck shared was an introduction to the Dog Man graphic novels from the creator of Captain Underpants – Lord of the Fleas and Grime and Punishment made us laugh out loud! Available at another of Beck’s favorite local spots, the Queen Anne Book Company. anks for sharing with us, Beck, our very own Peregrine Falcon!

Dancing, dancing, and more dancing!
at’s what our Queen Anne youth of the month, Kyra M, is all about - dancing! Kyra started ballet at two years old with the beloved Ms. Lynn Beasley at Children’s Dance Workshop and continued thru fourth grade, moving up as a teacher’s assistant. Krista and Julia now
join Ms. Lynn in teaching our Queen Anne dancers at this wonderful studio tucked behind Trader’s Joe. In addition to a full range of ballet, the studio o ers tap, jazz, hip hop and cheer. Now a high school junior, Kyra continues to dance – she is preparing to compete at the Greek Orthodox Folk Dance & Choral Festival in Phoenix, in February 2023. Good luck, Kyra!
An alumni of John Hay Elementary, Kyra has fond memories of Ms. Christine in the lunchroom (who now is retired and happily biking and hiking on Whidbey Island – reach out if you want to send Ms. Christine a holiday greeting). Well done John Hay parents, by the way, for helping push for the new(is) playground and stop signs surrounding the school.
We say this every month – and we mean it - we are not paid to mention these local businesses! Email us at queenannecc@gmail. com if you have ideas for the Queen Anne youth column! We welcome student writers as well.

easy meal when time is of the essence and people don’t want to spend on dining out at a nearby restaurant.
Rotisserie chicken can be served right out of the container just like a traditional roasted chicken. It also can be a component in many different meals. Consider these 10 ideas for putting rotisserie chicken to use:
1. After most of the meat from the chicken is eaten, boil the carcass with sliced onion, parsnips, carrots, turnips, and your preferred herbs to make a soup stock. Add bits of leftover chicken and noodles to have a delicious chicken soup.
2. Purchase premade pie crust and use it to line small ramekins. Mix chopped
behind-the-scenes look at the planning and maintenance of the garden. Amazingly, the garden always seems full, with new wonders revealed weekly, yet the plants have plenty of elbow room — notably unlike my current garden.
On this visit, in early June, the border was surfing the cusp between spring and summer - the irises and azaleas were in their heyday, while the delphiniums had just started and the peonies were nearly finished blooming.
But the real magic lies not in the pure flower power, but in the choreography of the planting. Purple iris blossoms are set off by a lemony meadow rue (Thalictrum flavum ‘Illuminator’). Plenty of evergreen foliage and winter interest backs up and highlights

rotisserie chicken with a can of cream of chicken soup and thawed frozen mixed vegetables. Spoon the mixture on top of the bottom crust, then top with another crust round, poking venting holes in the pastry. Heat up until the crust browns and the filling is piping hot. The result is a delicious chicken pot pie.
3. Rotisserie chicken can be used as the filling for enchiladas, fajitas, and tacos. Simply season with a packet of taco seasoning or make your own blend from a combination of paprika, chili powder and cumin.
4. Pulse rotisserie chicken meat in a food processor with celery, dill and a few dollops of mayonnaise or even Greek
that flower power. Color stories shift from section to section, from full sun to shade, as the path snakes back and forth across the hillside. A particularly striking section centered on a variegated dogwood, with silver brunnera (Brunnera macrophylla ‘Looking Glass’) in the foreground and a statuesque clump of sapphire blue delphinium (Delphinium ‘Cobalt Dreams’) on the right.
Kalfus said the NPA has full rein on planting choices — except trees, which require approval from the BBG. She recently championed a new maple’s inclusion. She said they are working on “leaving the leaves” when appropriate over winter to showcase horticultural best practices, though longtime volunteers may need convincing. The volunteers use only organic inputs in the garden beds, including Sluggo for
a global response.
“Every day these youth and their parents face the burden of type 1 diabetes and — by sharing their stories — they become powerful advocates in the fight to end this disease,” said Sean McParland,
yogurt or ranch salad dressing. Add some crumbled bacon and serve the chicken salad between slices of toasted whole wheat bread.
5. Shred the rotisserie chicken and blend together with melted butter and hot sauce to make it Buffalo-style. Use it as a topping for pizza served with a blue-cheese sauce on the crust.
6. Add pieces of rotisserie chicken to omelettes and top with melted cheese for a savory breakfast or brunch option.
7. Rotisserie chicken chunks can be added to any of your favorite casserole recipes in lieu of fresh chicken.
8. Make mac-and-cheese a more substantial meal by mixing in shredded
slugs and snails and blood meal for rabbits.
I’ve discovered many a plant here, like ginger relative Hedychium with fragrant orange spikes in late summer and fuzzy silver Potentilla lineata. (One of the two Hedychiums planted in my yard last year has returned — it’s very possible the other was swamped by marauding daylilies from the next yard, or I ripped it out while pulling at those same daylilies. We don’t know yet about the Potentilla, which was in a mixed container all winter.)
It’s easy to discover the names of plants you love, even without plant tags, thanks to QR codes on signposts at the edge of each section. Simply zap with your phone and you’ll get a list with photos of the plants in that section. My shopping list gets longer every visit!
Happily, the NPA also sells plants to

rotisserie chicken.
9. Recreate “chicken bog,” a traditional South Carolina dish made from chicken cooked in broth and rice to make a thick and creamy meal.
10. Create a chicken stir-fry with the rotisserie chicken, Asian vegetables and seasonings. Serve over glass rice noodles.
These are just a few of the many different ways to utilize rotisserie chicken in everyday cooking.
fulfill those needs in a stand next to the Trillium Gift Shop. It’s restocked every day by Monday, FYI. Interestingly, they are not divisions from the grounds, as you might assume. A recent surge of a soil-born hellebore virus and some persistent weed seeds put an end to that, so the plants are from local wholesalers. This time, I adopted an Agastache “Morello” whose leaves start out plum, making a lovely foil for the raspberry pink flowers, and several candelabra primroses, which are not that easily found at general nurseries.

Overa and his family have been active in One Walk for many years, and recently Eli was selected as one of two ambassadors for the 40th anniversary of his local One Walk, which gave him
the opportunity to speak to corporate teams about his experiences living with T1D.
“I wanted to teach people about T1D, what it is like to live with it and how someone is diagnosed with T1D. I really liked telling my story.”

WILDFLOWERS THAT WORK HERE
There are lots of reasons to go wild in your garden. I don’t mean let it run amuck with Himalayan blackberry and buttercup, as could easily happen in my yard – I mean embrace native plants and speci cally wild owers that grow well here.
What’s more charming than a wild ower meadow in full bloom? It harkens back to easier days, a connection with nature – an appears e ortless. You can see the appeal of wild ower seeds – in spring they are o en given away at garden events, or in promotions from companies wanting to appear “natural.” Yet before you plant, it pays to do your research. Very o en packaged wild ower mixes include plentiful amounts of nonnative seeds, or seeds native to areas with very di erent conditions than the Paci c Northwest enjoys. Many aren’t even labeled so you may have to contact the seed company.
Of course, it’s delightful to experience plants from around the world. My garden is certainly packed with plants from China, New Zealand, and Australia, to name a few. I’m not suggesting everyone needs to go fully native with their garden choices. However, there are great bene ts to your part
of the ecosystem and beyond to growing native plants.
e main reason to grow natives is that the local organisms, from insects to birds, co-evolved with these plants. eir bodies recognize them by scent, form, color and signatures transmitted underground. Many insects, of which the Monarch butter y is a prime example, are specialists — meaning they will only lay their eggs upon speci c milkweed species (Ascelpias) to help feed their caterpillars. Increased human development and incursion of invasive non-natives has decreased habitat of native plants, threatening countless insects and other pollinators.
Choosing to grow some of these can act like a minipreserve for some of these precious resources. It also helps increase the genetic diversity of the population to grow in more locations – that way if a storm or pest takes out a group in one area, there are still reserves in waiting. e more local reserves we grow, the better chances our pollinators have.
Planting in swathes of three or more plants is ideal, to create a kind of easy-to-spot runway for the pollinators rather than individuals dotted here and there. However, ecologists like Douglas Tallamy (author
