Queen Anne Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is only a few blocks from one of the most beautiful views in Seattle, Kerry Park, so you would expect when walking around the neighborhood to see lovely homes and gardens.

However, just a few weeks ago on W Lee St. and 3rd Ave., you would have looked about and suddenly seen a large barren wall with remnants of graffiti.

It struck me as an overpowering symbol of despair and lifelessness. When I walked up to the church in the fall for my interview to be the new Pastor of the congregation, it was the first thing I noticed and became one of my first areas of focus.

ABOUT THE CHURCH

A couple things to know about our church: we’re an open and affirming congregation — in other words, we’re committed to openly welcoming and affirming of all gender identities and expressions, and sexual orientations.

We house two neighborhood pre-

Assuming that trend continues, city officials expect violation cases to exceed last year's total.

Harrell’s proposal calls for strengthening the standards for securing vacant buildings by requiring them to have solid core doors, reinforced deadbolts, and in some cases polycarbonate sheets instead of plywood. The legislation would also require vacant buildings to be kept free of graffiti, mandate that any building that receives a violation notice to enter the vacant building monitoring program, simplify the process for police and fire referrals to vacant building monitoring, and authorize the Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections to file a property lien to collect unpaid vacant building monitoring fees and abatement costs.

“While we want to encourage new development and adaptive reuse of vacant buildings so that they do not fall derelict in the first place, these stronger standards will help us ensure that buildings left unoccupied are secured and maintained, along with efficiently inspected and monitored by the city so that they do not pose any dangers or hazards to neighbors and first responders,”

Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell is proposing a new ordinance meant to improve security and management of vacant buildings in the city. According to Harrell's office, the number of complaints about vacant buildings in the city with safety or maintenance violations increased 25%, from 556 in 2021 to 694 in 2022. The Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections has recorded an uptick in enforcement of violations at vacant buildings over the last few years. In 2021, 284 cases were reported. That number increased to 345 in 2022.

SPF’s Sponsor-a-Horse fundraiser, benefitting the SPD Mounted Patrol Unit, is underway

e Seattle Police Foundation is excited to launch its inaugural Sponsor-a-Horse fundraiser, bene ting the Seattle Police Department’s iconic Mounted Patrol Unit. SPD’s Mounted Patrol Unit is one of few remaining mounted units in the Paci c Northwest and is a treasured part of law enforcement in Seattle. SPF donors, corporate and private, proved their commitment to its preservation in 2011, through their overwhelming support of SPF’s Save our Horses initiative. is successful fundraising e ort saved the Unit from elimination and funded it through 2014, a er which the City of Seattle resumed its role in providing for the Unit. Nearly a decade has passed since then, and it’s time to level up our support once again. SPF wants this iconic Unit to not just exist but to thrive! Supplemental funding that can be devoted to a higher level of care, training, and equipment, will only enhance the Unit’s ability to serve the Seattle community.

e Seattle Police Department has had a Mounted Patrol Unit for more than 100 years. Please help us raise $50,000 by Sept. 15, to sustain this irreplaceable community legacy and help it ourish!

As with other SPD Units, the Seattle Police Foundation lls gaps between what the City of Seattle can fund for the Mounted Patrol Unit, and what it cannot. Donations from businesses and the community help pay for crucial nonbudgeted items, like new police horses, while also providing funding for equine care, facility improvements, unanticipated veterinary costs, equipment, training and more. Visit SPF’s Sponsor-A-Horse webpage for all the details and to make a donation.

SPRINKLERS ARE IN RODGERS PARK

Rodgers Park on North Queen Anne has not been watered for 5 years. Prior to 2019 the park was a verdant green space. Now, in the summer it is a dusty field devoid of grass. In the winter it is a muddy mess. In 2019 watering was terminated due to lack of staff. In 2020 we were told the pipes were broken so they could not water the park. But the pipes were not broken. After 5 years of asking PKS for help they set the sprinklers up on Monday. Shout out to Council Member Andrew Lewis and David Bader (landscape architect) who helped us raise the issue.

schools, The Children’s Workshop and La Casita Feliz/The Language Link.

We are host to the Independent Jewish Community Kavana, as well as bat mitzvahs and bar mitzvahs. Our space is not only for those who gather there. Hundreds of people enjoying the quiet neighborhood, with pets, friends or family walking by every day.

As a church which affirms the safety, care, and abundant love of God, it wasn’t fitting to have a huge part of our building be not welcoming.

So instead of seeing this icky wall, I began to see a canvas. We could’ve just painted it a nice color to match the building, but we wanted to give light to our neighborhood and anyone who passes by; this is also why we decided to invite participation from the community.

We wanted it to be a collaboration of gifts because we are not just Queen Anne Christian Church — the 120-year-old building with some people in it — we are a part of this neighborhood’s story and this neighborhood is a part of ours.

WILDFLOWER CONNECTON

Simultaneously, we’re becoming a Green Chalice Church, which prioritizes connection of Christian faith and creation consciousness. In these efforts we’ve moved towards rewilding parts of our landscaping to care for pollinators. So, when considering the theme for our community mural, we decided a beautiful way to convey God’s abundant love was through a garden of wildflowers.

Once we had the idea, we had to figure out how to do it. None of us are artists, but we trusted that, alongside our neighbors, we would create something surprisingly lovely. We asked for donations with GoFundMe to buy paint and supplies, meeting our goal in just three days.

On July 23 after church, we offered a prayer of blessing over the mural, that it might offer light and peace to all those who create it and enjoy it.

NEW STORY

Despite seemingly endless stories of suffering, violence, division, and crisis, we were creating a new story to share. A story filled with kindness, joy, love, connection and beauty. As Christians, we are familiar with that story — we celebrate it on Easter; it is a story from death to resurrection, burial to new life. And here it was unfolding in a seemingly small, insignificant way. As I showed up every day to work on the mural, I was reminded how transformation takes time. I saw the progress of how this once-sterile wall slowly became vibrant with colors and life. I saw neighbors and strangers connecting around painting and admiring the creativity and imagination of others. I saw appreciation and gratitude for the care and attention given to this once-dreary spot. I saw kids’ faces light up as they explored the paintings.

Mary Sexton

November 15, 1956 - July 5, 2023

Seattle, Magnolia, Washington - Mary Louise Sexton waved goodbye to mortal life on July 5, 2023, at Swedish Hospital in Seattle WA to dance toward eternity with a huge smile on her face. She was born in Beaufort, SC on November 15, 1956, as a 1.5 lbs preemie. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy and many other ailments, she pursued her dreams with uncompromising vigor, tireless enthusiasm, and childlike wonder. She graduated from Columbia College with top honors, later earning master’s degrees at Emporia State University and Western State University.

She traveled the world and loved time with her friends. She was a champion snow skier and loved white water rafting, swimming, scuba diving, and water skiing. Friends fondly recall her pedaling her blue tricycle across the hills of Magnolia, WA, where she lived for the past 40 years. She and her canine companion, Mame, took the world by storm, receiving a national award for their achievements. Her last few years were spent writing her memoirs, giving evidence of her difficulties while providing insight into the tenacity and spunk that enabled her to turn lemons into lemonade. Mary is preceded in death by her father and mother, CD Sexton and Mary Irene Sexton of Columbia, SC. Surviving are her stepmother, Martha Sexton of Irving, CA, and four sisters who miss her beyond measure, Margaret Johnson of Graniteville, SC; Jennifer Sexton of Columbia, SC; Teresa Burns of Kill Devil Hill, NC; and Elizabeth Sexton of Spanish Fork, Utah, as well as three nephews and two nieces. The world lost much with Mary’s departure, but her sweet spirit continues to flutter like a butterfly in a field of sunflowers. A memorial was held August 11, 2023, at 11 am at the Chapel in Elmwood Cemetery in Columbia, SC. Donations can be made to Canine Companion for Independence and Columbia College in Columbia, SC.

Then, we got to painting our community mural. Church members got it started and throughout the week we had kids, people, and even some pets contribute. Folks of all ages painted flowers, butterflies, bees, spiders, lady bugs, plants, and rainbows. They painted words reminding us that we are loved, and we’re better together, words encouraging us to do all things in kindness.

Painting this mural now, knowing that the wall had been this way for over a year, knowing what this community, and our world has been through these past few years, seemed to be a fitting christening of a new season.

BUILDINGS from Page 1Æ

Harrell said in a news release announcing the proposed legislation. The latest proposal from Harrell coincides with the Seattle 2035 Comprehensive Plan’s intent to utilize vacant or underdeveloped land for housing or mix-used development.

In life, we can get in the habit of walking by, of thinking we have nothing to offer, of not knowing where to start, of giving into the belief that things are just the way they are, so why try? But if we open ourselves to possibility, if we explore what can be, if we invite our imagination, and if we start somewhere small, we’ll be wonderfully surprised with what comes to fruition.

Through this project, I was encouraged that if we show up, and if we contribute even a little bit, something beautiful can be created from nothing. What a wonderful story to share with the folks in our beloved city.

Vacant buildings also create health and safety risks. According to the Seattle Fire Department, there have been 29 fires in vacant buildings so far this year, compared to 19 over the same time period in 2022. There have been three deaths this year involving vacant building fires.

“Fires in vacant buildings can present

some of the most dangerous conditions for responding firefighters,” Seattle Fire Chief Harold Scoggins said. “We welcome the mayor’s efforts to strengthen requirements that may prevent fires in vacant structures and provide a quicker path towards demolition or refurbishment.”

e Port of Seattle Commission approved $32,600,000 to achieve a long-standing goal of transforming the historic Ship Supply Building at Fishermen’s Terminal (FT), one of the oldest existing Port facilities, into a new globally recognized home for maritime innovation.

e Port will build the Maritime Innovation Center (MInC) to reach new cutting-edge, Living Building Challenge (LBC) certi cations. With only three currently certi ed Living Buildings in Seattle today, the Port

seeks this goal to reach its own sustainability objectives, attract the attention of global industry leaders to Puget Sound, and demonstrate the connection between innovative technologies and the maritime industry.

e Port will make companion investments to make Fishermen’s Terminal easier to navigate and more informative by adding new historical perspectives from a wider array of voices and communities.

“ e transformation of the Port’s oldest building

into a world-class center is a re ection of the Port’s commitment to investing in innovation so that the maritime industry and marine environment will thrive for generations to come,” said Port of Seattle Commissioner Fred Felleman. “ e Maritime Innovation Center will inspire collaboration between entrepreneurs, investors, and workers that will grow our region’s blue-green economy by drawing on our heritage to create living wage careers of the future.”
