hen things don’t go our way, our first instinct is to find external conditions to blame. For example, we might say to ourselves, I can’t advance at work because of the corporate culture, the economy, or my boss’ personality. In doing so we fail to consider a most impactful idea: that we are living within self-imposed limitations. Why is this so important?
First, because even if the culture, economy or your boss are factors in your professional success at your current role, those conditions are not under your control. Our self-beliefs are the strongest levers we have in shaping our perspective of the world, and while it may not feel like it much of the time, they are under our control.
Second, we tend to have a long-standing blind spot when it comes to self-reflection, so it would be foolish to ignore what influence our self-view may be playing in our life.
Our brains feed on past expectations to predict and respond efficiently to future situations. Conditional behavioral training techniques like Pavlov and his dogs use this mechanism to shape behavior. When the bell rings, it’s feeding time.
When first training a trick or behavior, a dog may need treats and lots of repetition. Eventually, they need fewer triggers to elicit the behavior. As the behavior becomes reinforced, the trigger or signal can be phased from treats to a word or hand signal.
Our bodies are doing this unconsciously all the time. We create protective patterns to avoid pain. If your shoulder is stiff, you might change your posture, leaning to the opposite side. That’s not a problem for a week or so, but over months can cause muscle imbalances and injuries.
Playing tennis recently for the first time in a long while, I realized I was hanging back, not running for the ball, just in case I might tweak my tricky knee. It was a casual hitting session, so I just let balls go by me. It made me wonder; what shots am I missing in other areas without realizing it?
As our nervous systems seek input from the environment about our safety, our body and brain respond – usually with one of our preset belief or behavior patterns. Some patterns are more obvious, like a positive association with chocolate and warm blankets, or getting tense before a

A day after outgoing three-term Gov. Jay Inslee delivered his final State of the State address, Bob Ferguson was sworn in as the state’s 24th governor on Wednesday.
Ferguson has served as the state attorney general since 2013 and was a member of the King County Council before that.
Following the swearing-in of other statewide executives, Ferguson took the oath of office administered by Washington Supreme Court Chief Justice Debra Stephens.
He began his midday speech
before a joint legislative session in the House of Representatives.
Ferguson did not shy away from pointing out where he thought the state government was failing and detailed his plans to address the major challenges facing the Evergreen State.
Ferguson, a Democrat, takes the reins as Washington faces a potential operating budget shortfall of between $10 billion and $16 billion over the next four years. He has asked state agencies to find efficiencies worth $4 billion.
“Despite these and other challenges, I’m optimistic,” Ferguson said.
He noted the state is often
bogged down in bureaucracy when residents and businesses need prompt results.
The speech had a bipartisan tone, with Ferguson calling out several Republican lawmakers for legislation they are backing and noting that he would support their bills.
“Let us listen to one another, without consideration for party, so that the strongest argument prevails,” Ferguson said. “Let me be specific with examples of how we can work in a bipartisan way.”
He mentioned House Bill 1022 sponsored by Rep. April Connors, R-Kennewick.
“I am excited to work with you to get your Homes for Heroes legislation to my desk,” the governor said.
“Let’s recognize the contributions of police officers, firefighters, behavioral
health professionals and other critical public servants and ensure they can access low-interest loans to purchase their first homes.” Ferguson also mentioned possible support of emergency powers reform to Sen. John Braun, R-Centralia.
“Sen. Braun, l hope to work with you to adopt reasonable limits on the governor’s emergency powers,” he said. “We can do that together.” Emergency powers reforms stalled in the last four sessions under Inslee. Ferguson said he supports a law enforcement bill from Sen. Jeff Holy, R-Cheney.

Gov.-elect Bob Ferguson has released his office’s budget priorities, which call for $4 billion in reduced spending by Washington state agencies while describing new taxes as a “last resort.”
The call for reduced spending is in response to a multi-billion shortfall for the upcoming 2025-2027 biennium, though the deficit for the next four years could be as high as $16 billion, according to Gov. Jay Inslee. As previously reported by The Center Square, the budget deficit is driven by an enormous increase in state spending since 2014, as state revenue is currently at record-highs due in part to the Legislature enacting dozens of new taxes over the past decade. Ferguson’s rhetoric is at odds to an extent with the philosophy of Inslee’s budget proposal; though Inslee called for reduced
spending and freezes to new spending, his budget would also add $4 billion in new taxes, primarily through a controversial wealth tax on millionaires that has drawn
Dear Savvy Senior, I’ve heard that excessive earwax can cause serious health problems in elderly seniors. What can you tell me about this?

Dear Caregiving, It’s true! Excessive amounts of earwax can indeed cause problems in elderly seniors including hearing loss or ringing in your ears. Some people experience vertigo, which increases the risk of falling. And there’s also a correlation between hearing loss and cognitive decline and depression.
Earwax — which is not really wax at all, but a substance called cerumen that binds with dirt, dust and debris — is normally produced by the body as a way to clean and protect the ears. In most people, the self-cleaning process works fine. But in others, including more than 30 percent of elderly people, the wax collects to the point where it can completely block or impact the ear canal.
Those that are most affected are elderly seniors, especially those living in nursing homes or assisted living centers that provide substandard hygiene. And those highest at risk are hearing-aid users because the devices push wax down into the canal.
EARWAX REMOVAL
Usually, earwax moves up and out on its own so the best way to control it is to leave it alone. But that advice can backfire for those who accumulate excessive amounts of earwax.
The symptoms of an earwax problem can include an earache, a feeling of fullness in the ear, hearing loss, tinnitus, dizziness, an ear infection, ear itchiness, or cough due to pressure from the blockage stimulating a nerve in the ear.
If you or your elderly loved one’s
experience any of these symptoms, try using a softening agent to help the wax leave the ear or to remove it more easily.
If you prefer the natural route, try baby oil or mineral oil. Using an eyedropper, apply a drop or two into your ear, tilting your head so that the opening of the ear is pointing up toward the ceiling. Stay in that position for a minute or two to let the fluid flow down to the waxy buildup. Then tilt your head in the opposite direction to let the fluid and wax drain.
Or try an over-the-counter earwax removal solution or kit, which are sold in most pharmacies. Solutions may contain oil or hydrogen peroxide, and some kits include a bulb syringe that you squeeze to flush your ear with warm water, if needed
You may need to repeat this wax-softening and irrigation procedure several times before getting rid of the excess earwax. If, however, the symptoms don’t improve after a few treatments, you need to see an audiologist or ear, nose and throat (ENT) doctor to have the wax removed.
Earwax removal is one of the most common ENT procedures performed. They have a variety of tools that can remove hard, stubborn earwax.
It might be tempting to poke a cotton swab, bobby pin, pencil or finger into your ear to get the gunk out, but don’t go digging. Yes, it’ll remove some of the wax, but it may also push the rest deeper into the ear canal and increase your risk of injuring your eardrum and making the problem worse.

Regarding Inslee’s budget, Ferguson wrote that “I can say that I agree with some of those decisions, including the housing investments that are outlined in this report. Others require additional scrutiny. While these investments have merit, we cannot afford all of them in this budget climate.”
Ferguson also wrote that “the reductions will be challenging, but ultimately, I believe they will improve our capacity to serve the people. We must review every program in state government through the following lens: Is this program more important than guaranteeing universal school lunches to every Washington student? Is it more important than childcare access for small
business employees?”
Although some Democrat lawmakers have perceived the defeat of several anti-tax initiatives in November as a “mandate” for new revenue, Ferguson wrote that “Washingtonians expect that we will increase revenue as a last resort. I will not contemplate additional revenue options until we have exhausted efforts to improve efficiency.”
Ferguson’s budget proposal drew cautious praise from Washington GOP Chairman Jim Walsh, R-Aberdeen, who wrote on X that “as predicted. The incoming governor is (rightly) putting daylight between himself and the outgoing guy. Let's hope this holds up.” Ferguson will be sworn in as Washington's next governor on Jan. 15.

Biscotti are hard, crunchy, Italian cookies that are baked twice. In fact, their name comes from the Latin “bis,” meaning “twice,” and “coctus,” meaning “cooked.” Although they can be enjoyed on their own, their dry, crunchy nature makes them hold up well when dunked into a beverage. Biscotti were even once commonly dipped into red wine.
Though they might seem complicated, biscotti generally are easy to make. Try this recipe for “Semolina and Almond Biscotti” from “Butter, Flour, Sugar, Joy” (Sourcebooks) by Danielle Kartes.

Yields 12 to 16 cookies
■ 1 cup sugar
■ 1⁄2 cup melted butter

In a stand mixer, cream the sugar, butter and eggs until light and creamy, about 2 to 3 minutes. Add the vanilla and salt. Mix to incorporate.
Add the all-purpose flour, almonds, semolina flour, and baking powder. Mix until well combined, but don’t overmix. Turn the dough out onto the prepared baking sheet. Pat gently to form one long loaf of dough roughly 14 to 16 inches long and 5 to 6 inches wide. Bake 30 minutes. Remove the loaf from the oven and allow to cool 5 to 6 minutes before using a long knife to cut the loaf gently into 12 to 16 cookies.
Lay each cookie on its side and bake another 20 minutes, flipping the cookies midway through. Cool completely to achieve that signature crunch. The centers will be a bit soft if eaten warm. These are perfect for dunking in coffee, tea or hot chocolate.
Optional: Melt the chocolate in the microwave in 30-second bursts and gently dip half of each biscotti into it lengthwise. Flip the biscotti chocolate-side-up onto a sheet tray and allow the chocolate to set.
R-Grandview, a freshman legislator from Washington's 14th Legislative District, delivered a message from Republicans after Ferguson's address.
“The Grandview Republican noted Washington state has many challenges that have failed to be sufficiently addressed under single-party rule in Olympia,” her office said in an email to The Center Square.

King County Metro workers are calling for an urgent response to safety concerns as county council members explore solutions.
The King County Committee of the Whole held its first meeting of the year on Monday with transit safety as the topic of discussion.
King County Councilmember Claudia Balducci started the committee meeting acknowledging the tragic death of Metro bus driver Shawn Yim, who was killed on the

Local 587 President Greg Woodfill said the county can change Metro riding rules all it wants, but if they are not enforced, it does not help with driver security.
“We have a public safety problem, not a transit problem,” Woodfill said during the Committee of the Whole meeting. “Our frontline transit employees suffer directly from the effects of not having enough resources to combat homelessness, mental illness, drug and alcohol abuse, and the resulting criminal activity in every city that we serve.”
Woodfill said drivers are far too often shot, struck by objects, and exposed to fentanyl and other lethal drugs.

The Metro Transit Police division of the King County Sheriff’s Office is funded through a contract with Metro, rather than the general fund. According to King County Senior Principal Legislative Analyst Mary Bourguignon, there are currently 65 of 79 budgeted positions filled within the division, with remaining shifts filled through overtime at the end of 2024.
The division has increased its funded positions to 89 for 2025, but staff shortages remain a concern.
The 2023-2024 King County biennial budget also provided $11.8 million to double the number of contracted transit security officers from 70 to 160 through 2025.
However, Woodfill alleges that the contracted security guards often avoid work or do not do their jobs and need to be monitored for performance.
Woodfill also suggested the county move funding dedicated to making Metro’s bus fleet 100% electric to transit safety measures instead in order to address rider and operator
Yet many were laid down even in childhood, based on something a parent or teacher said, or a mistaken conclusion you drew, and your brain has been building on that ever since. Because this process is lightning fast, and unconscious, it’s nearly impossible to prevent before we have a limiting response.
The trick is in paying attention to the physical and mental chatter happening internally. For some, it’s easiest to scan your emotional register first – for others, thoughts or bodily sensations are clearer.
The order doesn’t matter; they all work to increase your awareness of your emotional mechanics. Over time, you’ll notice your patterns such as, “when I’m anxious, my heart beats faster and I feel queasy.”
If negative thoughts arise, note them. Do you think you’re not ready/too old/unsuited for this job? If you are feeling upset, try distracting yourself with another activity that feels good. If you are calm, try questioning
concerns.
“A fleet of all electric buses that no one uses will not help climate change,” Woodfill said. “Getting more people out of their cars by expanding safe transit is just as beneficial as rapidly electrifying the fleet.”
One potential solution that received positive feedback from council members and Woodfill is a bus driver shield, which would provide a barrier between drivers and violent passengers.
During the committee meeting, King County Metro General Manager Michelle Allison explained what the department is doing to ensure Metro transit is safe. This includes increased security presence on buses and bus stops.
Metro has also partnered with King County Department of Community and Human Services to pilot a behavioral health support team that provides cold weather supplies, de-escalation intervention, food, and shelter referrals. According to Allison, the pilot program team has needed to request the police three times out of 4,500 contacts and 213 crisis response and deescalation situations.

In the job example above, if you are older than your colleagues, what experience do you bring that is helpful? Is there some action you’d like to take to remedy the conditions? Perhaps a course in AI or social media strategies would help you feel better prepared. Look around in areas of your life you’d like to improve and consider where you can play bigger. Try to have a “why not?” attitude. In most cases, you have little to lose and much to gain. Even failing at something new increases your knowledge and readiness to try again.
Meditation is a way of pre-paving this process, by practicing quieting and noticing the internal dialogue, what Buddhists call the “monkey mind.”
Even if you don’t make time for meditation, noticing your feelings, thoughts and emotions will fast-track your progress to the life you really want.
