WALLINGFORD Neighborhood Directory

OUR WELCOME

Greetings, This past year, 2016, was a great year for Wallingford. There have

been many changes, new buildings going up and many new businesses and residents moving into the area. We welcome all of you and hope you will be here for many years to come. In April the neighborhoods of Ballard, Green Lake, Greenwood / Phinney, Fremont, Queen Anne, University District & Wallingford were all represented, along with the Seattle Chamber & GSBA at the Neighborhood Expo held at Fremont Studios. There were over 150 businesses and non-profit organizations sharing information about their products and services. With swag bags, food samples, games and prizes, it was a successful event and well attended by the neighborhoods. Mark your calendars for April 12, 2017 for the next expo! The 67th Annual Wallingford Family Parade was another great event and was sponsored by Bedrooms & More. Council Member Ron Johnson of District 4 was the Grand Marshal. The Chamber went through several changes in 2016 and will look forward to 2017 with new leadership and expanding membership. The Chamber advocates and provides information to businesses and has partnered with the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and the Seattle Office of Economic Development adding many new benefits available to Chamber members. Thank you to all of our volunteers, members and friends who have contributed this past year and the Chamber will continue to work to support the businesses and the great neighborhood of Wallingford!

Previously known as the “The Kiddie Parade,” the “Wallingford Family Parade” is not to be missed. Thousands of people anticipate this event and come from near and far to line up along 45th Street to watch, participate and enjoy this traditional event which features local businesses, drill teams, marching bands and family oriented organizations celebrate and compete for awards. The Wallingford Family Parade starts at 11:00 a.m. at the the corner of Interlake and N 45th and runs East along N 45th Street to Bagley Ave. N. business areas. For years Wallingford has been recognized as one of the best communities for Halloween festivities, haunted houses and loads of treats. Near the end of the year, Wallingford settles in for the long dark winter by illuminating the streets, homes and businesses with colorful displays of lights and decorations. Many homes put on amazing holiday displays that attract visitors from all over the city. Wallingford Center becomes a hub for holiday activities, visits with Santa and shopping for locally made crafts and gifts. A walk down 45th Street and Stoneway is a feast for the eyes and a reminder that living in Wallingford is a great place for celebrating a small town life with big city amenities.

WALLINGFORD: 5 business districts offering a little something for everyone

Wallingford is an old Seattle neighborhood which was originally developed between1900-1925 when well-to-do business owners built their Summer cottages on the hill North of Lake Union. It was a place to relax with family and get away from the hectic and noisy life in the city. Today, those craftsman and bungalow beach homes still remain, but are now in high demand by people who wish to live in a remodeled vintage home built at the turn of the 20th century. In the past 20 years Wallingford has seen a huge influx of families who enroll their children into the language immersion programs at John Stanford International School which is consistently recognized as one of the best public elementary schools in the country. This architecturally preserved neighborhood reminds us of the tremendous growth that has taken place in the past 100 years. The combination of highly coveted homes, excellent public and private elementary schools and a walkable main street of businesses support an idyllic lifestyle; Wallingford is a small town in the heart of Seattle. Wallingford’s boundaries run East-West between Interstate 5 and Highway 99 and North-South between 60th Street and North Lake Union. This area covers approximately two square miles with 22,000 residents. Most people don’t know this, but Wallingford is made up of five different business districts. The most recognized retail area in Wallingford is on 45th Street between Stone Way North and Bagley Ave N, which provides commuters and residents with a variety of different sized shops both chain and independently owned. While this area is well known there, are other districts that add to the variety of opportunities available in Wallingford. The five retail districts are: n THE HISTORIC DISTRICT 45th Street - Today, 45th street is one of Seattle’s busiest avenues during commuter times as Ballard, Fremont and Wallingford residents drive to work or school each

day. Known for it’s walkable main street the atmosphere in the Historic District; with tree lined streets, pubs, ice cream shops, QFC, boutiques, restaurants and numerous crosswalks, has been the iconic identity of Wallingford for more than 100 years. DINNER, MOVIE AND ICE CREAM. You can get all three easily in Wallingford. Eat at one of the many restaurants with fare from around the world, from Japan to Afghanistan. Then walk a block to see a first-run film in the single-screen art-deco styled Guild 45th (2115 N. 45th St.) theater. Top it off with some gelato at Fainting Goat (the original shop at 1903 N 45th St.). KICK BACK WITH THE KIDS AT WALLINGFORD PLAYGROUND. (4219 Wallingford Ave. N.). Tucked amid the Craftsman homes and south of the neighborhood businesses, this super kidfriendly park has it all: padded playground, wading pool (June 26-Aug. 16), benches and tables, a nice tennis court, bathrooms, and expansive greens for pick-up soccer games or volleyball games. HAVE A CUPCAKE. Trophy (1815 N. 45th St.) located inside the Wallingford Center put Seattle on the cupcake map and helped start the nation’s cupcake craze. Martha Stewart loves them! The Hummingbird cupcake is exquisite. GRAB A BEER OR SAMPLE SOME WINE. The neighborhood’s unusual and hip-before-hip beer purveyor, Bottleworks (1710 N. 45th St.), has the beer for you. Visit City Cellars next door and choose from an amazing array of quality wines. TAKE A WALK THROUGH MERIDIAN PARK. This park (4649 Sunnyside Ave. N.) is home to a great expansive of green and an old apple orchard. The north entrance is an artistic archway made of river rock that opens into a wheelchair-accessible labyrinth of swirling rock and cement. Kids enjoy the literary inspired play area designed with swings, a sand castle inspiring play pit and a variety of imagineering playground equipment. TOUR THE GOOD SHEPHERD CENTER. Brick façade on the outside, wide-wooden stairwells on the inside, this former residence for girls and operated by nuns (4649 Sunnyside Ave.

N.) is something to behold. It’s set against the east edge of Meridian Park, and is practically hidden from view. But the building, with a chapel on the 5th floor, and its grounds, complete with the famous Seattle Tilth P-Patch, make an interesting tour before or after lunch. FARMERS MARKET WALLINGFORD. Wallingford Farmers Market is located in beautiful Meridian Park, behind Good Shephard Center ( at the corner of Meridian Avenue N and N 50th Street). This European style market is open every Wednesday, 3:30-7 p.m., from May 29 to September 25. Chefs Market every Wednesday from 3-3:30 p.m. n THE INTERCHANGE - is the East entrance to Wallingford from I-5 and the University District. It’s a place to go to satisfy indulgences for tattoos and smoking pipes, wine & spirits, food truck cuisine, hamburgers & fries, manicures & tanning, pizza & comic books and old collectable vinyl records. n TANGLE TOWN - The North end of Wallingford is home to a high concentration of mostly retail businesses on N 55th Street near Meridian. It is a more modern and updated version of 45th Street dotted with local favorites; Zoka Coffee, famous Mighty-O Donuts, Elysian Brewing Company, Kisaku Sushi, Leny’s Pizza, artist shops and more. Tangle Town gets its name from the irregular configuration of Seattle’ s street grid in this transition zone from when the street cars used to operate in the area. GET A PINT AND A VEGAN DONUT. Wallingford’s Northend nicknamed Tangletown – but don’t let a long-time local catch you calling it that – is a business hub formally called Meridian and hidden away between Greenlake and North 45th Street. When the Elysian Brewery located its Tangletown pub there (2106 N. 55Th St.) in 2003, the name stuck. Elysian has some of the best brewed beer in Seattle. And right next door is Mighty-O Donuts (2110 N. 55th St.). The donuts are amazing and oddly, healthy. Try the French toast donut, or the lemon poppyseed and be sure to have a cup of coffee. The donutmaker has the beans specially roasted by Caffe Vita.

www.wallingfordchamber.org PLAY SOME SERIOUS SPORTS. Going on nearly every hour of every day at Woodland Park (1000 N. 50Th St.) is a soccer match, baseball or softball game, a tennis battle and a scene of crazed motocrossers leaping off man-made dirt jumps next to skateboarders dipping and catching air on the neighboring skate park. The Olmstead Brothers, John Charles and Frederick Law, originally designed the park (Seattle Parks and Rec handled the recent motocross and skater additions), as well as many other beautifully crafted public lands in Seattle. n NORTH LAKE UNION - Gasworks Park is the backdrop for lakeside fun at it’s best with boating, biking and kite flying at the picturesque park with the downtown view. At the intersection of Stone Way, breweries, wine shops and restaurants await visitors who have worked up an appetite from outdoor activities. HIKE DOWN TO GASWORKS PARK. Wallingford is truly a walker’s paradise and the views of downtown are quite something, especially heading south down Wallingford Ave. N. Take a dog or a good friend down this street which t-bones into Gasworks Park, a historical landmark. n STONEWAY CORRIDOR - This street used to be just the place to go for all your home repair or remodeling needs. Today it is the also location of a residential boom town with new condos, restaurants and fitness studios popping up where long-time building trade businesses once operated. Bastyr University’s Medical Clinic leads the health services community with a large naturopathy clinic, while a myriad of chiropractors, massage and acupuncture therapist offices fill in small offices along Stone Way. Additionally, a variety of dance, martial arts and drama schools offer classes to keep everyone fit and moving in the right direction.

After just over two months of summer vacation, Seattle Public Schools students returned to class Sept. 7. At Sand Point Elementary School, students filed toward campus, many with parents walking hand-in-hand beside them. Principal Kirsten Roberts stood outside the entrance, welcoming all comers to the new school year. She

was joined by district Superintendent Larry Nyland, on a campus tour. “It’s definitely exciting to see the first day of school,” he said. Later that day, Nyland would visit Garfield High School in the Central District a half-hour after their students had filed through the front doors. The 2016-2017 school year is the first to operate under new school

The year 2016 saw 211 reports of shots fired from Jan. 1 to Aug. 1, the second-highest number of incidences for the same period of every year from 2012. Only 2015 was higher, with 226 police reports that included evidence or eyewitness reports of gunshots. The figures came in the latest SeaStat crime reports, presented at an Aug. 25 meeting of the East Precinct Police Advisory Council. The gap was even narrower when it came to the number of victims of gun violence. Between Jan. 1 and Aug. 1, the year 2016 saw 35 gun-related injuries, compared to 45 for the same period in 2015. But 2016 has seen more gunrelated deaths, with seven fatalities this year versus six in 2015.

Only one day later, 2016 saw its eighth gun violence death with the Aug. 2 killing of Trina Bolar in her home in Madison Valley. The four weeks from July 5 to Aug. 1 saw nearly three dozen reports of shots fired city wide. The Seattle Police Department’s East Precinct saw more shots fired reports than any other precinct, most of which were concentrated in the Yesler area of the Central District. More than half of the East Precinct shots fired reports occurred in a single week at the end of July. East Precinct Captain Paul McDonagh noted that in most of these reports, guns were being introduced into a dispute between personal acquaintances — such as domestic violence cases or arguments between a person’s

City pulled into aging storefront dispute By KaylEE OSOwSKi The final blocks of Madison Street on the way to Lake Washington are lined with well-kept shops and trees, giving the Madison Park neighborhood a charming, small town feel. But there is one property many community members feel is an eyesore — and a potential hazard. Between 41st and 42nd avenues sits a white building with green accents – 41144118 E. Madison Street. The building has three storefronts, the first of which is safely occupied by Spa Jolie. The other two are vacant and have failed multiple inspections since July 2014. According to city documents, part of the roof is collapsing and one of the walls is bowed. Some community members say the property has been in rough shape for more than 20 years and have approached the owner about fixing or selling it to no avail. But earlier this year, the city attorney’s office stepped in, and plans to rehabilitate the building are in the works. The owner, Constance Gillespie, hired an architect out of Issaquah, and the city is reviewing the plans. While this is substantial progress after community members have tried for years to convince Gillespie to do something, people are still not sure the plans will come to fruition. “I have absolutely no confidence that anything will happen until I see a construction company out there doing something,” said

October 6,

BY DANIEL NASH A 19-year-old homeless man was killed the morning of Sept. 12 after a driver crashed into his tent near the Northeast 50th Street exit of Interstate 5. The King County Medical Examiner identified the man as Walter Burton, but was known to nearby homeless people as Walter Stroud. At approximately 5 a.m., the car left the I-5 offramp and drove up an adjacent hill, crashing through Burton’s tent and into a tree. Stroud lived at the location with other homeless neighbors. The driver, identified by Washington State Patrol spokesman Rick Johnson as Oscar Gutierrez de Jesus, fled the scene but was soon arrested by troopers for vehicular homicide. He was administered a drug evaluation at Harborview Medical Center. The homeless camp is on Washington State Department of Transportation property and Washington State Patrol is investigating the crash.

BY BRENDA KAY NETH The University District Food Bank, 5017 Roosevelt Way NE, held an open house on Aug. 17 celebrating their joint venture with Low Income Housing Institute and Youth Care. Now deemed University Commons, the food bank and Marion West Apartments have become a so-called “one stop shop” for housing, employment and food resources for homeless young adults and lowincome workers living in the University District and Seattle’s north end. Nearly 100 visitors milled about the grocery style space, which was stocked to the roof with fresh produce, meat, pastries, dairy and bread. The large storerooms held plenty of room for dropping off deliveries of donations and supplies. Joe Gruber, executive director of the food bank, guided small groups

Avoiding the rush-hour slam that clogs North 45th Street can be difficult during peak drive times and that’s why it is good to know those backroad arterials that can move you from Ballard to Lake Washington in mere minutes. The best known one in Wallingford is North 40th 5TH AVE NE Street. Heading East and West, North 40th Street takes you by tree-lined sidewalks, 4TH AVE NE Dutch Colonial and Craftsman homes, the 3RD AVE NE occasional coffee house and throw-back 2ND AVE NE corner markets like the Durn Good Grocery and Irwin’s Coffee Shop. From North 40th 1ST AVE NE Street, you can veer up Wallingford or EASTERN AVE N Meridian with Lake Union in your rearview SUNNEYSIDE AVE N mirror. Or, you can continue East along the LN P CORLISS AVE N E wavy road, which dips and turns all the way ON into the U-District beside the Burke-Gilman BAGLEY AVE N Trail before you’re poured out at Portage Bay.
