editorial A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
The bull sale season has successfully kicked off here in Canada, and prices appear to be strong despite the drought conditions that affected much of the western half of the country in 2021. With moisture arriving in the late fall and decent snowfall in many areas thus far, there is cautious optimism in the industry. Still, considering the reduced feed availability and high costs, this issue of The Speckle Park Journal focuses on the bottom-line boosting traits that Speckle Park offer under such pressures (page 14). No doubt, as extreme weather events seem to have become more the norm than the exception, Speckle Park are uniquely built to help producers find efficiencies that reduce overhead costs and increase endproduct value. Staying on the theme of profitability, the Beef Cattle Research Council has released an online calculator that you can use to project potential returns on preconditioning calves this fall, entering a selection of data points specific to your operation. More info is available on page 34. To get those calves off on the right foot if they and their mothers experience a tough start, Dr. Roy Lewis, DVM, has suggestions on page 52. In this issue, we also have the chance to celebrate two new world records for high sales of both a female (Australia) and a bull (Canada), see page 28. Congratulations to Wattle Grove Speckle Park and INC Cattle Co. Until next time, may the calves be lively, rains be timely, and the sun shine on you and yours.

Happy New Year! At the CSPA office, we are looking forward to working with all the members this year with our new registry system. Thank you everyone for your patience as we have worked through the backlog and learned the new system. There are still more improvements and functions to come. Several members have already received their online login information and we continue to get those out as we can. Online access means that members can enter calf registration details, create a transfer request (if a paper certificate has not yet been generated), view lab results, enter weights, disposal codes, account updates and more. We ask that members please ensure their contact information, particularly emails, are up to date. Member education information and instructions on how to complete basic registry functions are available on the CSPA website. We also ask that anyone who has not submitted a credit card authorization form to please do so; the form is available on the CSPA website or email the office for a copy. As you start to record calf registration details in the registry, please provide the office with a list of the animals you have entered along with what DNA tests you would like ordered for each. The ability for members to make DNA requests through the online system will be available in the future, however we are still waiting for that to be set up. One thing that the CSPA members will need to work through is updating older animals that only have microsatellite (STR) DNA profiles to SNP. You will need to go through your bulls and females and determine who these individuals are and request SNP tests
from the office. We can have samples transferred from Quantum in Saskatoon to Neogen Canada in Edmonton for a $10 fee per sample. You could also pull new hair samples and send them directly to Neogen. By doing this, we will update the herdbook to mostly SNP profiles making parent verification of calves timelier and more cost effective in the long run. For parents that aren’t updated to SNP, the calf will require both the SNP and STR tests in order to be parent verified. You can provide the list of parents that require a SNP at the same time you provide your list of calves with their requested test types. Online transfers are available if a paper certificate has not been generated. When it comes time to register your calves and you would like the ability to transfer online, you must request that papers be held. This means you will not get a physical paper mailed out to you. When transfers are done online the certificate will be printed at the office and mailed directly to the new buyer. For those animals you need transferred and you have the certificate, please mail them into the office with the information filled out on the back. The fall show and sale season was very successful for Speckle Park breeders with many record-setting high prices and a Speckle Park making the prestigious “top ten” in the Canadian Western Agribition CN Supreme. The donation heifer at the Big Chill sale was also a great success bringing in $27,500 for the CSPA. Thank you to INC Cattle Co. for their generous donation. We wish everyone a successful bull sale season. Take care.

L E C O I N D E L’A S S O C I A T I O N Bonne année!

stock Investors in the stock market are always on the lookout for a hidden gem – an undervalued stock with the potential to soar in the future. For those who bet on the beef business, the Speckle Park breed may be just such a winner. As the ‘new kid on the block’ on the beef scene, it’s taking some time and a concerted effort by breeders to have more people recognize the many assets Speckle Park bring to the table. But with drought-shortened feed supplies, now could be the time for those advantages to really pay off. [CONTINUED ON PAGE 16]

“There are less maintenance requirements to keep a smaller-framed animal healthy. The smaller the animal, the lower the requirement. There’s a 25% difference in feed intake between a 1,300- and a 1,600-pound cow. That calculates to around 10 pounds less of hay each day, which adds up to $1.50 difference in feed costs per day for each animal.”

THE MEAT PACKER EMPHASIS ON LARGE CARCASS WEIGHTS
COMES AT A COST
According to Canfax Senior Analyst Brian Perillat, carcass weights are continuing to grow. The average steer carcass weight across Canada was 919 pounds in 2021. But, the cost of gain begins to equal nearly the entire value of the animal as the steer approaches 1,500 pounds. With the current market price of a fed steer in Alberta at $1.60/lb, and cost of gain on feeding a 1,500-pound steer at about $1.60/lb as well, the profit margin becomes zero.

PROFIT MATTERS
Vince Stevenson sees the breed from all angles. He and his family have Kerkain Farms, a cow-calf operation in the shortgrass country of southwestern Saskatchewan, but they also own and operate Ranch House Meat Company in Shaunavon. It’s a region that’s been hard hit by lack of rainfall the last two years, so they’ve had to downsize their herd to protect grass supplies. Of the remaining 550 head, half are Speckle Park females, while the other half are a combination of Angus and Simmental cows that get bred to a Speckle Park bull. “This drought has really tightened things up here for me. It’s the first time I’ve ever experienced it this bad. I’m going to have to downsize again if we can’t grow any feed,” Stevenson says, but believes he’s better off than many ranchers in the area. “Winter feeding is where it makes or breaks you financially. I’ve had different types of cattle, big-framed cattle, but these Speckle Park, they don’t need a lot to eat and they remain fleshy. They eat quite a bit less than a lot of cows I’ve previously had on this operation.” Stevenson’s preference is for a Speckle cross, especially Speckle Park-influenced females with a different type of sire to add a little more power from the hybrid vigour. One of the reasons he was drawn to the breed that ranks nearly as high as the renowned meat quality aspect, is the maternal side. The majority of the Kerkain herd are moderate-framed cows, just under 1,200 pounds. “But what they’re going to raise for a calf is huge, compared to their size. I don’t need a 1,500-pound cow to raise a
700-pound calf. They milk good, they mother good. The feed conversion is very good.” As a relatively new breed, Stevenson believes the focus has been on maternal qualities. But with those well in hand, he sees the emphasis is starting to shift to adding size. “It bothers me,” Stevenson admits, “because I believe it should be about quality, not pounds of meat. But we’re still selling pounds of meat. “People want to have bigger calves come market time, but they forget about what it costs to winter the cow. This year when we’re going to feed 180 days, I’m saving quite a few pounds of feed per day to keep that cow in the same condition as some other cows. “When we had lots of feed, everybody fed lots of feed. I think more people are paying attention to that now. They’re knowing every day how much feed that herd is getting.” Stevenson’s experience doesn’t surprise ruminant nutritionist Barry Yaremcio at all. The consultant from Stettler, Alta., has been hearing plenty this winter about stretching short feed supplies. He’s also seeing awareness grow about the costs of feeding. “There are less maintenance requirements to keep a smaller-framed animal healthy. There’s a biological cost for an animal to repair and maintain tissue, keep the immune function running, and for movement,” Yaremcio explains. “The smaller the animal, the lower the requirement. It’s like the gas economy difference between driving a Toyota or a Lincoln. “There’s a 25% difference in feed intake between a 1,300- and a 1,600-pound cow.”
“Winter feeding is where it makes or breaks you financially. I’ve had different types of cattle, big-framed cattle. But these Speckle Park, they don’t need a lot to eat and they remain fleshy.”

Yaremcio does the math, showing it means around 10 pounds less of hay each day, which adds up to $1.50 difference in feed costs per day for each animal. That’s a margin that could mean survival or not in drought days, according to another Speckle Park breeder. “Feed efficiency should be one of the first things on your priorities,” emphasizes Ken Malterer. “How many pounds you’re putting in front of the cow, and how many pounds you’re getting out of it.” Malterer and his wife Tania run Ponderosa Farms near Ponoka, Alta. “I hate to say it, but in years where there’s a lot of feed, people don’t worry about it, just throw it in front of the cow. This year, people have started paying attention. I think it’s something we should be looking at all the time,” he says. “This drought brought that to light. People are starting to get a little more savvy with the pencil. You’ve got to make some money on these cows, otherwise get out of the business.” When Malterer purchased pasture of his own, he needed to gain some efficiencies, and that’s where he found Speckle Park excelled. “For myself, it works really well. It comes down to the amount of pounds we’re producing off a quarter section, or whatever pasture you’ve got. Speckle Park have consistently done very well compared to bigger breeds.” But it’s not only cow and pasture efficiencies. While strictly a purebred operation now, in the past, Malterer did feed out animals to supply a retail store in Red Deer. The target finished weight was around 1,300 pounds for their [CONTINUED ON PAGE 18]

the big question
“We figured out we were averaging 7.5-8 pounds of feed in the bunk for every pound of gain, compared to 9-10 pounds for largerframed breeds. It really opened our eyes to [asking] why are we raising these big cattle if they’re inefficient and if there’s more efficient breeds out there.”

natural beef program. “With the Speckles, we found a lot of efficiencies. When you put feed in the bunk you expect rate of gain on the back side.” Malterer was able to achieve 2.75 pounds of gain per day, on much less feed. “You figure out after a while that, sure, you weren’t getting the big-framed animal, but you were making consistent pounds of gain from the feed you were putting in. We figured out we were averaging 7.5-8 pounds of feed in the bunk for every pound of gain, compared to 9-10 pounds for largerframed breeds. It really opened our eyes to [asking] why are we raising these big cattle if they’re inefficient and if there’s more efficient breeds out there.” As a seedstock producer, Malterer knows the importance of the female in the breeding equation, and that’s also where he feels Speckle Park offer a win. “I think the biggest thing with the females is that they’re the full package. They’re good mothers, with good feet, and good temperament. When you’re raising a calf, I look at a benchmark as 50% of the calf [weight] comes in the first six to seven months. That comes down to the mothering instincts and the milk quality. These little Speckles, wow! What a calf they have on them! They really put the calves front and center. “And longevity. I was just going through my herd; I’ve got two old-timers, 18 years of age this year, and when we preg tested in November, both are going to be among my first calvers. When you get a cow like that, she’s made you some money, she’s been a producer for you. And a lot of their calves are still in the herd.” Efficiencies from moderate frame size, plus maternal qualities, and the eye-catching colour pattern, attracted Kim Moore and her daughter Juli-Ann to the breed when they saw it initially at Farmfair International in Edmonton. But integrating Speckle Park into their 600head herd of primarily Simmental-Angus-cross cattle west of Olds, Alta., meant some unique challenges. “They have to compete with our Simmental-cross cows,” explains Moore, who uses crossbreeding to gain performance. “Mine are a little bigger than a typical [CONTINUED FROM PAGE 17}
Speckle Park, with about a quarter Simmental in them. Mine have to bring the dollars. “Our calves out of Speckle cows are very, very competitive. One year, my husband Grant couldn’t believe those cows had raised some of our best calves. A lot of the calves are as big as the cows come fall. “At the end of the day, whether you like it or not, you’ve got to come up with the dollars. By crossing with the Simmentals, they do really well. Buyers have come and told us they were the best calves ever brought, and they couldn’t believe they were all Speckles.” A challenge Moore has found is educating potential buyers and auction markets about the breed’s benefits and identifying the cattle accurately. Because of the variable colour patterns, she’s had her speckled calves grouped in sale lots with Longhorns, a very different type of beef animal. She’s worked hard to distinguish her calves. “We have enough cows that we’re starting to get buyers in the region and auction markets trained so they don’t mix Speckles in with Longhorns in pre-sorts, just for colour.” This year, for the first time, her Speckles were grouped with their black calves and earned the same top dollars, which made her very happy. The hidden bonus, though, is that Speckle Park also deliver on the meat quality, and all three producers attest to the extra-high level of marbling in the breed. Moores run a backgrounding feedlot, but do also take some cattle all the way to finish. “We’ve fed a lot of different cattle, and I’ve had a lot of different beef,” remarks Moore. “I don’t know why, but when we fed the Speckles the meat has an awesome flavour. I didn’t expect that, because I’ve eaten everything. Marbling is what makes it so unique.” It was the meat quality that brought Ken Malterer to the business, after they purchased a 4-H steer from a neighbour. “It was some of the best beef we’d ever had in our lives,” recalls Malterer, who has been raising Speckle Park for two decades. “That got us into the cattle. I really liked them so much we just keep breeding them.” And when he was in the direct meat end of the business, his retail partner could hardly keep the Speckle Park beef on the shelf.

As for Stevenson, it’s also a fan favourite at his Ranch House Meat shop. “We’ve got people coming from 300-400 miles away,” he says. “We’ve actually got customers in B.C. who drive all the way here to pick it up; they’re willing to do that for Speckle Park beef. It’s well marbled, and seems to be a different texture than other meats. It actually cuts different.” As a nutritionist, Yaremcio goes back to the moderate frame size to explain the marbling magic. “An animal that finishes with a 1,600-pound carcass will put on more lean tissue for an extra two or three months, just to get to a mature size, to then begin putting marbling on,” he says. “Whereas a Speckle Park, instead of being 1,300 pounds by the time they start marbling, they’re only at 900. The smaller the animal, the sooner they start putting the marbling on, the more efficient they are. It does make sense all the way around.” When the pandemic began, people started eating at home more, Stevenson says. He has seen more customers buying bigger volumes of beef, once they got the freezers. Both he and Malterer believe this could be a time for the breed to blossom, as the trend for consumers to buy direct from the farm grows. Tough times can open doors of opportunity. Expensive feed and short pasture combined with more beef-hungry shoppers could set the stage for Speckle Park cattle to showcase their true value to the beef business. SPJ

got milk? NUTRITION FACTORS INTO MILKING ABILITY
“With smaller framed animals, it is easier to get them to 65% of mature body weight by the start of the breeding season as heifers.
When they hit puberty, if you’re pushing hard for higher weight gains, what happens is the mammary tissue is developing four times faster than any other tissue in the body. If they’re getting too much energy, instead of filling the udder with milk-secreting tissue, it’s being filled with fat. The milk-secreting tissue is set and will never change, even if that cow gets skinny. So if they’re overfed during puberty, they’re not going to be good milkers for the rest of their life.”

These market conditions the overall driver of the North American have resulted in cattle producers’ beef/cattle market, but the trend from margins suffering. There is also a beef cow inventory perspective in frustration as wholesale and retail Canada has been much different. The beef prices have often been trading Canadian beef cow herd has basically at record high levels as domestic and been on a decline since the post BSE international demand has been very peak back in 2005. The shrinking herd strong. The challenge for producers is points to better market potential ahead, the disconnect between cattle and beef and given the ongoing liquidation fueled prices as packing plant throughput by drought and high feed costs, it could has struggled at times and has created add additional upside to the market. The a bottleneck for cattle producers and biggest question becomes, when will the overall beef production. That said, it is market move in the producer’s favour. worth noting that 2021 North American Cattle markets have been going beef production was record large, but through cycles for decades. Modern Covid backlogs restricted cattle prices. cycles may not be simply supply and In addition, over the last few years the demand of cattle, but have more outside U.S. cattle herd has expanded while forces involved, such as, trade disruptions there has been very limited change (BSE, mCOOL), policy changes, (ethanol in slaughter capacity, p o l i c y, n o n - t a r i f f which makes the supply global impacts “in this cattle cycle, barriers) chain quite vulnerable (Chinese meat demand, there has been to any throughput issues COVID-19, etc.) and a definite supply at the cattle processing weather. down discouraging producers from producing as many cattle, resulting in the herd shrinking. The U.S. breeding herd grew from 2014 until 2019, but market-ready cattle supplies didn’t peak until 2021. The challenges with COVID and drought made the imbalance between cattle producers and packing plants extreme. The COVID production restrictions, combined with extremely strong beef demand, further amplified the price spread between beef and cattle. As a result, some new packing plant infrastructure will likely be built, but it will be built too late for the peak cattle supplies of this cycle. So what is the point of this story of a disappointing cattle market, and unbalanced profits through the supply chain? The key take away is that in this cattle cycle, there has been a definite supply response to these markets, and the positive side of the cycle for producers should be just around the

corner. There are a lot of cattle to work through in the next few months as cattle on feed numbers are near record large. Drought and COVID have delayed the market response, but it is also important to remember that the deeper we cut into current cattle inventories given the poor market and the drought, the bigger the market rebound. We all remember 2014 and 2015 quite well, I am sure, and with the smaller calf crops in 2022 and possibly 2023, cattle numbers and beef production will be declining for the next two or three years, which could make some of the currently cheap bred cows on the market quite profitable. The latest USDA cattle inventory report showed the supply of calves and feeders outside of feedlots at the smallest level in seven years. These tighter numbers combined with the smaller calf crop in 2022 will be very market supportive once the current large on feed numbers are worked through in the next few months. SPJ

Ciara grew up on an acreage in British Columbia where she was passionate about horses, cattle, and agriculture from the very beginning. She was very active in B.C. 4-H and through her high school years became more involved with the program on a national level. Ciara moved to Alberta after high school to pursue a diploma in livestock production at Olds College, where she then continued her studies and completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Agribusiness. Ciara and her husband have a small mixed ranching operation that they are proud to be building from the ground up with their two young children in the Didsbury, Alberta, area; they hope to expand on the operation in the years to come. Having worked on the registry side of several breed associations, Ciara looks forward to working with the CSPA membership to assist through the registry transition and create a better association and process for the membership going forward.
INC Cattle Co. graciously donated INC Small Town Girl 7J, who was sold at the Big Chill Sale in December to raise funds for the CSPA. PRECONDITIONING
preconditioning is a management method that prepares calves to enter the feedlot, reducing stress and disease susceptibility. Preconditioned calves are weaned at least 30-45 days prior to sale, put on a vaccination program, and introduced to processed feedstuffs, feedbunks and waterbowls.
Calves shipped to the auction mart or feedlot immediately after weaning are stressed by separation from their mothers, transportation, co-mingling with unfamiliar calves, disease challenges, variable fall weather, and adjustment to unfamiliar feed, water and facilities. Each of these stresses can suppress the immune system and make freshly weaned calves more susceptible to bovine respiratory disease. Their impacts are worse when they all come at the same time. Preconditioning aims to set calves up for success in the feedlot by spreading these stresses out, and reducing the large economic losses associated with high rates of acute respiratory disease morbidity and mortality in freshly weaned and transported feedlot calves1. Typically, preconditioned calves are:
Feedlots buying preconditioned calves can benefit from improved rates of gain and feed efficiency, lower treatment rates and death loss, and lower cost of gain. Studies from the Noble Foundation, Oklahoma State University and Kansas State University have demonstrated an increase in net value ranging from $13.71/head to $57.31/head for preconditioned calves, including the cost of the pre-conditioning program. Cow-calf producers marketing preconditioned calves can benefit from heavier sale weights. Over time, preconditioned calves that consistently perform well in the feedlot may also attract price premiums, particularly with larger herds involved in direct marketing programs. These benefits must be weighed against the facilities, feed, management and health expertise needed to manage weaned calves at the same time as other farm operations (e.g. grain harvest), as well as the risk that calf prices often decline throughout the fall preconditioning period.
• at least four months of age at weaning • weaned for a minimum of 45 days prior to sale or shipment, • accustomed to eating from a feedbunk, and • vaccinated, • castrated, • dehorned, and • treated for parasites at least three weeks prior to sale (Radostits, 2000).

With funding by the National Check-off and Canada’s Beef Science Cluster, the Beef Cattle Research Council has developed the value of preconditioning decision tool. This new tool is a spreadsheet designed to help Canadian producers evaluate the economic opportunity from preconditioning. It is comprised of five steps. The first four steps require: general calf information, anticipated price under traditional management, preconditioning costs, and projected prices for non-preconditioned and preconditioned calves based on weight and seasonal adjustments. With a robust database on historical Canadian cattle prices, the tool allows producers to compare their projections to the 10-year provincial average. The fifth step then provides a summary of estimated net returns from preconditioning and projected breakeven price premiums of three different precondition programs (30, 45, 60 days). This calculator evaluates the economic opportunity from preconditioning by providing a summary of estimated net returns and projected breakeven price premiums of three different precondition programs.

SEARCHING ANIMALS To search for animals, click on the “Animals” link to search the entire CSPA herdbook. After clicking on the link, a window will open to allow you to search by registration number, animal name (full or partial), RFID number, or tattoo (full or partial). Simply enter the parameters you wish to search and hit the “Search” button. The more specific your entry, the more specific results will be. Entering partial information will bring up more results than entering full tattoos or names. For example, entering only the tattoo prefix will bring up all the animals that herd has ever registered, versus entering the full tattoo of one animal. These results may also be filtered using the drop-down menu by name, gender, date of birth, etc. From the results, you may view the animal’s name, tattoo, birth information, extended pedigree, ownership history, progeny, performance data, EPDs (when they become available), and more. Questions about the search functions or results that are coming up? Please contact the CSPA office at 403-453-9544 or office@canadianspecklepark.ca.

NSAIDs
(non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)
&calving A lot of producers now have painkillers prescribed for the calving season and keep them close to the chute so they can easily be administered. Keep in mind, no labels have “pain control at calving” on them, but those changes will come with more research, I believe. Therefore, because all NSAIDs are prescription, veterinarians prescribe them for extra label ways. There is no doubt the use of NSAIDs as an ancillary treatment or a stand-alone treatment at calving goes a long way towards a quicker recovery, for both cow and calf. From increased appetite and better milk production, to being quicker to mother up, and potentially quicker to rebreed, NSAIDs can help when given to cows after a hard pull. If the cow needs a NSAID, think of the calf. A tighter pull affects both the cow and the calf, so consider treatments for both next time a difficult calving arises. There are many choices you and your veterinarian can work out. With calving season approaching, let’s talk about the cow. To minimize trauma, we know that pulling in time with the cow’s contractions, going slowly and methodically, and applying lots of lubricant can avert a tough calving. After calving, treatment with NSAIDs should lead to less obturator paralysis, quicker recovery from vaginal contusions, and relief of all other pain and soreness associated with calving. Appetite is not lost, so milk production is maintained. I realize Caesarean sections and really hard pulls are becoming a thing of the past, but even cows that take too long calving get very sore and stressed, and NSAIDs will improve the situation. Examine your parameters based on a light, medium, or hard pull. A light pull would describe being able to pull by hand with no other assistance. Stages medium or hard are
when a calf puller may be applied. Then evaluate, was there a tear created? Did you pull too fast? Was the calf slow to begin breathing? Did you hear any unusual pops or snaps indicating tension or a slipped ileosacral joint popping (where the spine runs through the pelvis)? Did the cow end up with obturator paralysis? All of these clues will help determine if the pull may have been too hard. Even though we seldom have hard pulls because of selection for calving ease, manipulation for malpresentations, torsions, breech births, etc., all cause at least irritation to the vagina, or potential ripping in the vagina. This is especially true if you need to give time for the vulval lips to dilate. A number of hard pulls are caused simply by an insufficient relaxing of the vulva. This is where patience to stretch the area and lots of lubricant, combined with NSAID, go a long way to ensuring delivery of a live calf. We know pulling in time with the cow’s contractions, going slowly and methodically, and applying lots of lubricant can avert a tough calving. If one follows the beef codes of practice, usage of NSAIDs during major surgical procedures such as C-sections is now the accepted practice, either at the time of delivery or at the beginning of surgery. I know from experience the recovery from C-sections is much more rapid and the cow doesn’t spend the first day moping around. I have used injectable products, oral Meloxicam and now the Banamine TD, with great success. The ease of administration makes them desirable for calving cows. Most vets are also prescribing NSAIDs for all the prolapses they deal with, including a prolapsed uterus.Again, if recovery includes quicker milk production, that is never a bad thing. With hard calvings, for years, the clinic I was associated with would give calves Flunixine IV, thinking swelling

and soreness on the legs and potentially ribs were greatly reduced, and I believe they were. Calves on IV fluids for scours, as long as being treated for the dehydration, were routinely given NSAIDs and it is now proven that appetite is increased in this scenario. It is also very good for the public to know that producers give painkillers for difficult birthings to both cow and calf. Cattle are looked after and observed closely at calving, so these painkillers add another tool in the toolbox to improve welfare of the Canadian cattle herd. With pain medication there may be adjunct treatment with antibiotics but often times the antibiotics may be unnecessary. If your veterinarian prescribes NSAIDs for pain, he/she may choose the one they do based on considerations such as: label claim, past experience in the field, price per treatment or per 100 pounds, duration of activity, ease of administration, advice of associates, or slaughter withdrawal. Get familiar with the various painkillers out there, including their dosage and withdrawal dates. A horse NSAID called phenylbutazone or “Butazone” should never, ever be used in cattle production and is a banned product, and would offer no advantage to the great NSAIDs on the market that are approved for cattle. Hopefully calving season goes well for you in 2022, and you have very few even moderate, let alone tough, pulls. If you do, it is nice to know NSAIDs can increase the comfort of both cow and calf and could help shorten rebreeding time. SPJ
