Celebrating the Life of Elizabeth M. Helm Candlelit vigil shines light on Ellie’s life Dan Ukkelberg Staff Writer

Students, friends and sisters gathered to remember the life of Elizabeth Mary Helm. As people began to arrive at the vigil they were handed a candle and a card with the list of speakers, a picture of Ellie and one phrase, “She Shined as Bright as the Sun.” “You may be small, but your heart is so big,” Paige Schwartz said. “We will never forget you.” This theme seemed to be repeated many times throughout the vigil as nearly all of the speakers mentioned how Ellie’s heart and spirit outsized her body. “Community means standing together in celebration and in loss,” Vice Provost of Student Affairs Laura Oster-Aaland said. “I stand with you, your friends, your classmates, your instructors, because we are all a part of this community.” Hundreds of people attended the vigil and stood in solidarity. They stood in silence, sang at times, held candles and released 21 balloons to represent Ellie’s 21 years of life on this Earth. “She had the biggest smile. She had the biggest heart. She had the biggest sense of humor. And the only thing to this day that I will ever see bigger than Ellie’s love for everybody is the love of the community for her,” Interfraternity Council president and friend of Ellie, Alex Stangel said. Stangel also went on to say how Ellie helped him become the person he

But what I didn’t know, was how much I needed a 21-year-old sister,” Ellie’s cheer partner Roger Dickenson said. “I

Dickenson was followed by three friends of Ellie’s — her roommate Haley Pacholl, her Kappa Delta “little” Sydney Yingling and sorority sister Molly Berdan — who vowed to live as Ellie lived: strong, loving and selfless. The last speaker of the night was her friend Amy Muller. “I am blessed to

have shared countless fond memories and traditions with Ellie,” Muller said. After Muller spoke, candles were lit, the music played and the balloons were released. When students were told the vigil was over, everyone stood still holding their candles in silence. It was not until minutes later people started to blow out their candles and depart. The vigil took place Oct 9. at 8 p.m.

Medical Application of Spider Silk Spider silk is being researched to be used for medical advancements Phoebe Ellis

Head News Editor

Spider silk is now being considered as a means for advancement in medical applications. Amanda Brooks, assistant professor of pharmaceutical science, is currently researching ways to use a certain type of spider silk to create extended release drugs for medical applications. Spider silk is an interesting option because it’s strong, stretchy and spiders can produce a lot of it. For the purposes of Brooks’ lab-

oratory, the spiders have the specific silk extracted from them every other day for about an hour. The spiders used for these studies, golden silk orb-weaver spiders, have six types of silk they produce, but the researchers only use one. They use a microscope to ensure the extraction of the correct fibers, but the spiders are not hurt in this process. After processing the fiber, it turns into a white powder, but researchers need to find a way to turn it back into silk. There’s a liquid face, and then they spin spider silk. They then turn it

munity. “Like Lego blocks, you can mix and match and make different patterns,” Brooks said. “So spiders have specific Lego blocks that give mechanical function while there are other blocks in nature that give biological function.” The example Brooks used was heparin, a biomolecule that is found in the human body and prevents blood clots and fights infection. Mixed with the super silk background, it can grab that heparin from the bloodstream to help prevent clotting and infection. Because of spider

silk’s numerous properties, stretchiness, stockiness or elasticity, it’s perfect for a vast amount of applications. One of the larger projects Brooks is working on is an application of the spider silk to combat antibiotic resistant bacteria. The way she sees it, the pharmaceutical companies aren’t doing anything about antibiotic resistant bacteria because it doesn’t affect them, and the development of new and effective antibiotics is expensive and takes many years. SPIDER SILK | FROM COVER Brooks knows that she may not be able to push companies to work faster or to ask doctors to prescribe less, but she is aware that both of these things are improving. Instead, her idea is to use controlled release medication made with spider silk to target infection as opposed to releasing antibiotics into the body whether or not the person is in need of that specific antibiotic. “Let’s say the physicians prescribe the antibiotics they want,” Brooks said, “But instead of that antibiotic immediately coming in contact, even if you don’t need it, let’s just sequester it for the time being ... we took a little element and we mixed it into spider silk, and now we can create these little bubbles, and inside these little bubbles we package a bunch of antibiotics.” The bubble is designed to only break open upon coming in contact with that specific infection, which means that it will only be released into the body in the event that it will have a positive impact on the persons health, Brooks explained. Another idea Brooks hopes to one day be working toward is a similar application used with opioids. She wants to be able to tag where pain is coming from and have the opioids be released to that specific area with the hope of decreasing opioid dependency and abuse.

Bladder, Bowels and the Brain Implant normalizes neural connections for patients with incontinence Samuel Caspers Co-News Editor

Doctors at Sanford Health recently put an implant into a patient to help her quality of life after she experienced side effects of fecal incontinence. “To get outside of the house was a challenge,” Barbra Johnson, the woman who benefited from the implant, told the Forum. Johnson had to leave work

early, rush to the bathroom during everyday things like running errands and sometimes had accidents. In a study published in 2014, experts estimate that 8 to 10 percent of the adult population experience fecal incontinence with that number jumping to about 15 percent for adults over the age of 70. Although Johnson is not the only one who lived with incontinence, she is in the minority in terms of

seeking treatment. The same experts, surgical specialist M. Shane McNevin and general surgeons Michael Moore and Timothy Bax, predict that only 2 to 5 percent of these patients will “eventually seek treatment.” “Symptoms of fecal incontinence are a common and under-reported source of social morbidity,” the experts wrote for the American Journal of Surgery. “Surgical intervention is typically reserved for those who fail

medical therapy.” The implant, which is called Insterstim and was surgically inserted, normalizes the neural connection between bladder, bowel and brain by stimulating nerves in the sacrum (the lowest part of the back). After implantation, Johnson told the Forum that it started working immediately and she has total control once again. Sacral nerve

neuromodulation like this has been used to treat fecal incontinence since 1995, but has only been available in the US since 2011, according to surgeon Frederic J. Cole Jr. Incontinence is a symptom and not a disease. Medical conditions that include incontinence as a symptom are urinary tract infection, neurological disorders — multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, stroke or brain tumor — an enlarged prostate,

menopause, obstruction of the urinary tract of any time and constipation. In Johnson’s case, muscle deterioration caused the incontinence. Further causation of incontinence can range from consumption of diuretics in food, drink or medication and include alcohol, caffeine, chili peppers, large doses of vitamin C and heart or blood pressure medications, sedatives and muscle relaxants.

Trump’s Birth Control Mandate raises questions about coverage Amanda Johnson & Phoebe Ellis

Staff Writer & Head News Editor

The Trump administration recently moved to allow employers to deny women birth control in company insurance plans. Employers are allowed to deny such services based on religious and moral objections to the use of birth control. Liv Oland, president of North Dakota State’s Women’s Activist Organization (WAO), said that WAO does not support the mandate. Much of the reason for the opposition from the

group is that women don’t always use birth control as a means of controlling whether or not they get pregnant. As birth control pills are doses of hormones they are also used to help with chronic acne and to help with painful menstrual cycles and health issues like endometriosis. Beyond that, WAO also believes that women have the right to do what they wish with their bodies, even if that means preventing an unwanted pregnancy. While WAO says that close to every woman who uses birth control will be affected, Deborah Nelson, a nurse practitioner for Student Health Services at

NDSU says that it is unclear as to who will be affected. Nelson says that the federal mandate does not have an effect on state laws and regulations regarding healthcare and birth control, and as there are 26 states that mandate coverage for reproductive services, including North Dakota and Minnesota, residents should not have to worry about such things. WAO does believe that this will likely increase the rate of abortions. Nelson encourages students to contact their insurance provider if they want information on their specific coverage and how it will be affected.

Dove Ad Accused of Racism Recent body wash GIF sparks social media outcry

In A Nutshell Amanda Johnson Staff Writer

Quinn Garrick Staff Writer

Dove, known for their body wash products, released a Facebook ad in GIF form depicting a black woman removing her shirt and revealing a white woman underneath. Social media users came out and criticized the ad for racism and the past theme in soap advertisements: a “dirty” black person being cleansed into whiteness. Other companies have been criticized for previous advertisements involving racial prejudice including Intel in 2007, Popchips in 2012 and Nivea just this past April. Dove apologized in a statement reading, “Dove is committed to representing the beauty of diversity… (The latest ad) did not represent the diversity of Real Beauty, which is something

Dove is passionate about and is core to our beliefs.” Marissa Solan, a spokesperson for Dove, said that the GIF “was intended to convey that Dove Body Wash is for every woman and be a celebration of diversity, but we got it wrong and, as a result, offended many people.” She added that Dove has removed the post and was “re-evaluating our internal processes for creating and reviewing content.” She declined to say how many people reviewed the ad or whether any of them were African-American. “There were better ways that the ad could have been produced and created, without enforcing racial stereotypes,” Nicky Geisser, a freshman studying animal sciences, said. “I don’t know how this ad could have gone through multiple stages of review and been seen by numerous

employees of Dove, and not been stopped or criticized for the potentially offensive nature of the ad,” Skylar Dockter, a freshman studying political science, said. This is the second time Dove has been accused of enforcing racial prejudice. Back in 2011, Dove released an ad showing three women standing side by side, each with lighter skin than the woman next to her. Behind the women were signs reading “before” and “after.” The “before” sign, positioned behind an African-American woman, showed cracked skin, while the “after” sign, behind a white woman, showed smooth skin. The “image we recently posted on Facebook missed the mark in representing women of color thoughtfully,” Dove said. “We deeply regret the offense it caused.”

North Dakota helps to study bees and butterflies

North Dakota landowners are being asked to help study bees and butterflies by allowing pollinator surveys to be done on their land. “The study is a four-year project that aims to identify bee and butterfly species present in North Dakota and estimate abundance of these species,” the Forum reported. Three sites in every county will be visited twice in the summer. Private lands that have owners that allow technicians to access the land two to four times throughout the summer, native or restored

prairies or pasture, a minimum size of 50 acres of a width of at least 200 yards and are less than a mile from an access point are eligible for this study. The project is funded by the state Department of Agriculture, along with partners.

Moose in North Fargo

A moose that entered North Fargo has created a stir amongst the community. The young bull was scrounging for food near the Hector International Airport. “Wildlife typically becomes a little more active in the fall, whether they’re feeding, whether their going into the rut, whether they’re being disturbed from the harvest or hunters,” WDAY reported. Moose are unpredictable and aggressive, weighing nearly 800 pounds. There is no need to call North Dakota Game and Fish if a moose is seen in town, just leave them be and watch from a safe distance. There are typically several sightings of moose and large animals this time of year.

Reward given to kidnapped girl

Earl Melchert saved 15-year-old Jasmine Block after she was kidnapped for a month. Block “had been abducted and held against her will by three men for nearly one month before escaping the afternoon of Sept. 5,” the TwinCities Pioneer Press reported. She had fled from a foreclosed home and swam part of the lake to escape. Melchert had gone home from work to pick something up and saw the girl approach-

ing from a distance. Melchart called the police and drove Block to the authorities, where they passed one of the three men who abducted her. Melcher was awarded $7,000 for Block’s safe return. $2,000 of that reward was from her family and $5,000 was from an anonymous donor. On Friday, Oct.6, Melchert was being given the reward when he turned it down and gave the money to Block instead. The three men who kidnapped Block were arrested the same day she was found.

Soot in songbirds records air pollution

Soot that has been trapped in feathers of songbirds is being used to record air pollution in the United States. U.S. researchers are measuring the black carbon found in feathers of songbirds over the past century and “they’ve produced the most complete picture to date of historic air quality over industrial parts of the U.S.,” the BBC reported. Soot is in the air due to unregulated burning of coal, and researchers have struggled for accurate records on the amount of black carbon that was found in the air at the end of the 19th century. “Researchers were able to accurately estimate the amount of soot on each bird by photographing them and measuring the amount of light reflected off them,” the BBC reported. Birds from present day are cleaner than those birds from the 1900s when black carbon levels peaked.

Lord of the Urinals Jason Lord and his unique legacy in a Minard Hall bathroom Erik Jonasson II Spectrum Staff

The man behind a dedicated urinal must have a rather interesting story to tell. In the case of Jason Lord, that would be precisely true. The golden-colored plaque is glued onto the urinal. A dedication so small it may be easy to miss. FARGO FASHION

New Fashion Boutiques in Downtown Fargo

Kindred People and Pimrose Boutique bring us new fashion

Kindred People has new styles every day to keep up with new trends.

Janet Tumaini

Contributing Writer

Fargo is growing at a rapid pace, and new businesses keep emerging, especially ones focused on fashion. Infographics from Impact, a local magazine, actually state that North Dakota is the number one state that has shown the highest rates in success for new entrepreneurs and small businesses. New boutiques keep opening around the city of Fargo and now, especially new women’s clothing boutiques in downtown Fargo. To keep up with all of the businesses, here is a little information on two new clothing boutiques in downtown Fargo. Kindred People was established in 2015 in downtown Alexandria, Minnesota.

JANET TUMAINI | THE SPECTRUM

The boutique has recently opened a chain store on Broadway in downtown Fargo. The boutique features women’s clothing, accessories, shoes, beauty products and gifts. All of their merchandise is handpicked by the owners from local businesses, regional artists and market shows from all over the country. Styles range from casual, everyday wear to special event dresses and work attire. Kindred People’s mission is to offer comfortable styles that are unique, versatile and affordable. In support of local artists, the store also features artisan-made gifts that showcase the area’s talent and Northern roots. Some of these lines include clothing items for men and children, jewelry, prints, greeting cards, woodwork and much more. Kindred People also has new arrivals daily, so if you look at their boutique everyday you may notice some differences.

FARGO FOODIE

Primrose Boutique is another fairly new boutique to downtown Fargo, opening in mid-July and located on Main Ave next to Kittsona and Lot 2029. The boutique occupies the former location of technology company Codelation, which has since relocated to NP Ave downtown. Riley Bader opened the first Primrose Boutique in Bismarck, North Dakota last year. Bader opened the boutique with the purpose of offering customers with a one of a kind retail experience and chic fashion items that will be sure to add some flair to one’s wardrobe. Primrose Boutique is inspired by a mix of high fashion and new street trends. They carry a large selection of retail items at a fair price and sizes ranging from small to 3x. Bader is very passionate about carrying affordable products for a wide range of customers from several different vendors at trade shows. Offering plus-size

options for her customers is something that Bader considers an important part of her business and something that many boutiques currently do not offer. With new styles coming in each week, Primrose Boutique provides a wide selection of current fashion trends and accessories, allowing customers to customize their own styles to the new and evolving fashion trends. Boutiques are becoming a large section of businesses located in downtown Fargo, with each catering to residents of the area and visitors that come to shop. As similar businesses bring a new sense of competition, it all comes down to offering unique merchandise, appealing to wider audiences, providing great shopping experiences to customers through style consultations and, overall, building relationships with the customers.

It’s hard to find a dish that requires little effort with ingredients and cleanup afterwards, but this recipe does just this. Between work, class, organizations and hours of assignments and studying, finding the time to make nourishing meals at the end of the day can seem impossible and is often the last priority on the list of things to do. Unfortunately, food preparation requires a prior trip to the grocery store as well as additional time to do dishes. At the end of a long day, the last thing we want to do is worry about cooking. It is at this point that fast food or a frozen meal become beyond tempting. However, by doing this, we have little control over the nutritional content of

our food, not to mention the additional expense associated with takeout food. Learning to prepare meals that contain minimal ingredients, with little preparation time and that use few dishes is an excellent way to set the stage for smarter choices as we enter the rest of adulthood. That is where this sheet pan supper comes in to play. It only requires three dishes to assemble, including a cutting board. To reduce the dishes needed further, it would be possible to simply toss the ingredients on the pan, eliminating the need for a mixing bowl. Lining the sheet pan with aluminum foil reduces the time it takes to wash the dish later. The idea behind a sheet pan supper is all about ease: the protein and side components of a meal are all tossed together and cooked on a single sheet pan. The result is a colorful and flavorful combination

of ingredients, great when eaten together. An additional beauty of this dish is that once assembled, no other work, aside from occasionally stirring the ingredients as they bake, is needed. This allows for time to relax or study as the meal roasts. While this recipe calls for sweet potatoes, virtually any type will work. As they roast, bell peppers become tender and sweet, providing a tangy complement to the smoky sausage. The sausage lends flavor to the dish, eliminating the need for additional seasonings. The exception to this is paprika. Found in any store’s spice section, paprika is a red spice made of ground, dried pods of mild pepper varieties. Traditionally used in Hungarian cooking, the flavorful paprika combines well with the onions, garlic and potatoes in this dish, and dresses the ingredients in

its red color. Depending on your appetite, this dish can serve three to four people.

Smoked Sausage and Potato Sheet Pan Supper Ingredients:

1 stick smoked sausage, sliced into 3-inch segments 3 large sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into bitesized pieces 1 large red bell pepper, cut into 1-inch segments ½ yellow onion, cut into bite-sized pieces 2 garlic cloves, roughly chopped 3 tablespoons of olive or canola oil 2 teaspoons of paprika Salt and pepper, to taste

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. In a large bowl, combine the sausage and vegetable pieces. Drizzle them with oil and sprinkle with paprika, salt and pepper. Be careful

Prepare for the Winter Top 5 tips for a bucket list before winter begins Mirnada Stambler Features Editor

We all see it coming: the coldness in the air is becoming brisk, and winter is right around the corner. Now, do not get me wrong. It is still fall and will continue to be fall until we see that first snowflake fall, but after that, it’s all downhill from there. Let’s be honest — we love the winter. We live in the Midwest; we should love the winter. Every year it is a

race to get everything done before that first snowfall, and because the Midwest is unpredictable, we never know when that might be. Start your bucket list now with Pinterest and prepare for that snowfall, so when it happens you don’t have to rush in the cold. There are fun things you must finish before winter comes.

1. Prepare your car now

You don’t want to be rushing in the cold to get your car ready for the snow.

Wait for the next nice day and use it to get your car ready. Here are just a couple of things to remind you about when getting your car snow-ready. Check your tires: it would be the worst to need new tires midway through the winter or need more air so that they’re properly inflated. Antifreeze your car: make sure your wiper blades are good enough to withstand the ice, and obviously change your oil. Start now so you do not have to spend all this money all at once right before the

first snowfall.

2. Ride your bike/ take a walk

The chilly weather already has us in the napping mood, but take advantage of this weather before it is too late. Of course, we can still do this in the winter, but at that point it is a real struggle to get out of bed and force yourself to do these things in negative 20-degree weather.

3. Take a long drive

You may be wondering why this is on a bucket list of things to do before winter.

Well, once the roads get icy it is hard to have those nice little road trips to nowhere. And we all know long drives are always a good time, especially when you have someone else to have indepth conversations with.

4. Clean out your closet

Before it’s too late, take out your winter jackets and clothes and check to make sure everything still fits. Find those clothes that you no longer like and give them away; if they were rarely

worn, you could even sell them for some extra cash.

5. Start your movie playlist

Prepare yourself for those cozy days in by saving all of those new Netflix movies. Add them to your list and wait it out because you will be thanking yourself when it is too cold to do anything outside and you are not motivated to look through Netflix for new movies to watch. Instead it will already be filled with movies for you to enjoy.

Album Review: ‘As You Were’ is Rebirth of Oasis

Former Oasis frontman, Liam Gallagher releases debut solo album destined for classic status Laura Ellen Brandjord Staff Writer

Chances are you’ve heard of Oasis. The British pop-rock band from Manchester, United Kingdom, is known for an impressive catalog of hits including “Stop Crying Your Heart Out,” “Supersonic” and the ever popular 1996 classic “Wonderwall,” the latter of which has been dubbed the go-to song for guitar-playing teenage boys trying to impress girls. And can you blame them? Possibly less familiar to fans of their music, however, is that both brothers are still actively making music after Oasis’s sudden, violent implosion in 2009. Frontman Liam Gallagher just released his first solo album since Beady Eye (Oasis but without Noel Gallagher) called it quits in 2014. “As You Were” is chock full of songs that feel like old friends, perhaps because of the Lennon-esque flair to many tracks, or simply due to Liam’s unmistakeable voice. Regardless of the reason, Liam proves he still has a few musical itches to scratch. “Wall of Glass” kicks the album off with funky electric harmonica and grainy, beefed up guitar. Add some

acoustic strumming and Gallagher’s telltale vocals, and you’ve got a killer song. The first track is destined to become an anthem for those who see people for who they really are, with the chorus pointing out: “I don’t mean to be unkind, but I see what’s in your mind, and the stones you throw will turn back in it’s path and you’ll shatter like a wall of glass.” The delivery of the enlightened lyrics, paired with the sparse instrumentation during the verses, give this song a cool, confident vibe, while the chorus with the explosive guitar and upbeat, funky harmonica make it an in your face, singable tune. “Bold” directly follows “Wall of Glass” on the track list, and takes a softer approach to slow things down a half step from its explosive predecessor. A sweet and simple song involving background piano, acoustic guitar strumming with electric accents, it feels relaxed and comfortable. Complete with a dreamy breakdown, “Bold” keeps with the times while still grabbing flavors of the acoustic indie pop of the ‘90s. “For What It’s Worth” has a kind of a “Stop Crying Your Heart Out” feel to it. It’s a song about admitting you’re wrong in a relationship and

that you screwed up without expecting forgiveness. It is hard to listen to this song and not picture a ‘90s era Liam dejectedly walking through London singing his apology to passers-by. The instrumentation on “All My People/All Mankind” is the best on the entire album, in my opinion. Layered acoustic guitar picking, tamborine, heavy kick drum, deep low guitar and piano are mixed expertly. Then you take into account Greg Kurstin (producer of Adele, Florence + the Machine and the new Foo Fighters album) produced the album. Kurstin is known for his inventive and masterful use of layering and command over musical dynamic. The second to last track on “As You Were” takes an enlightened Lennon-esque stance lyrically. With verses such as “selfies, what a f-----’ disease” and “showboats not up to speed,” Liam airs some of his grievances of today’s society. The former beloved Oasis frontman comes back to the stage and his adoring fans in a masterwork of an album, “As you Were.” A combination of familiar Oasis flavors, John Lennon influences and killer production makes this album a must listen.

Review: ‘Battlefront II’ Beta Brings Battles and Beauty Beta has beautiful imagery, fantastic battles and interesting game modes, classes and scenarios Nathan Wetrosky Staff Writer

There are a few words that come to mind when I think about “Star Wars: Battlefront II,” but one word that stands out above the rest is beautiful. Whether you are fighting as a droid for the Confederacy of Independent Systems (CIS), a clone for the Republic, a rebel for the Alliance or a stormtrooper for the First Order or Empire, beautiful is one of the first words that will come to mind once you drop into your first battle. The first thing I did upon entering the game was battle against the artificial intelligence to test out the infantry classes the game offers. This mode is called arcade mode, and it has a variety of scenarios that can be played. Only two of the arcade modes were available for the beta, however. The two open were “Wipe Them Out,” where you play as Darth Maul and slaughter any unfortunate clone trooper that gets in the way. (Not canoni-

cal, by the way.) The second mode I played was “Roger Roger.” If you know anything about Star Wars, you know that “roger roger” is the famous saying of the basic B1 battle droids as they accept an order. Right after I spawned in as an assault class battle droid I said “wow” and then immediately got shot by an insolent republic dog. The battle began. Just like in the movies, lasers flew overhead and to the side as my droid forces advanced into the throne room of Theed Palace. The clones put up a valiant defense, but I was on the CIS’s side so not to brag, but we had a huge advantage. During the battle, I tested all four classes available to players. The first as mentioned was the assault class. The assault class seems to be an excellent pick to protect the other class’s weaknesses. The assault carries a standard armament of a thermal detonator, a shotgun and a pulse launching device that stuns enemies.

The second class is the heavy class, which turns out is my first love. The heavy is just what you’d expect a heavy to be. Carrying an E-5C heavy blaster as the primary weapon, an impact detonator, a personal shield and a heavy rotary blaster (a Star Wars equivalent to a handheld Gatling gun) to mow down hallways filled with enemies. The heavy class can deal a whole squad worth of damage in a matter of moments. Next is the officer class who carries a pistol, a cluster grenade, a troop health boost and a sentry turret to support and inspire your forces to victory. Lastly is the specialist, which is a sniper class that takes out units from afar and highlights distant enemies for friendlies to converge on. I had a great time testing out the different ground unit types, but now it was time to test the multiplayer galactic assault mode. In a galactic assault, players join a side and are given objectives to attack or defend while the enemy

team does the same. This “Battlefront II” open-beta was a great way for EA to place their game at the mercy of the public. It is undeniably one of the most gorgeous works of art I have ever seen. Each ship, building, laser, bump and scratch was placed in the game with what looks to be the upper limits of human love and passion. The gameplay is fun and you feel like you are a part of the battlefield and that however you use whatever equipment or vehicle is in your arsenal will matter up to the final moments before a match ends. Like mostly anything else sadly enough, it has its share of flaws and weaknesses which are holding it back from becoming truly a game that deserves the title of “Battlefront.” I am just going to try and sum up a few of the big things that bothered me or that I believe are holding EA and this game back. First, there should be no such thing at all in any game that is a triple A title

that remotely resembles loot crates. My reasons are loot crates can be found in freeto-play mobile games. A mobile free-to-play game on a smartphone has the same loot and progression system as a $60 game. Does something seem wrong about that? Second, large vehicles like the MTT or the LAAT gunship used in the beta should not be on rails. In the original “Battlefront” and “Battlefront II,” large vehicles like the Homing Spider Droid and All Terrain Armored Transport could go anywhere on the map and be controlled entirely by players. To me, it seems like a step back the EA would set those special heavy vehicles, that help define Star Wars, on rails that force the machine to go in only one predetermined route. Lastly, all vehicles that can be played on a map should be ON the map. Vehicles should not just be able to suddenly appear with a player in them. I understand that this is probably EA’s way of making sure that the

players who earned the vehicles get to use them. The vehicles should not be used as carrots to spur players on, but they should rather be used as what they are - a means to annihilate the enemy team. This new Star Wars title has a whole lot of potential, and I think that EA has gotten their act together since the colossal Bantha poodoo “Battlefront” EA released. The game has flaws, but what doesn’t? The combat is good and keeps things interesting so that a person keeps coming back for more. Well, at least I did. The sights and the sounds are the best I’ve ever seen, and the gameplay itself is not too shabby either. With a campaign that is from an Imperial perspective of the Galactic Civil War, it should prove to be a memorable game that players old and new will enjoy. Unpopular Opinion: Pumpkin Spice Lattes are Gross Fall’s famous baby food drink

After the encouragement from social media, pumpkin spice has now been incorporated into all sorts of food groups. Cereal, breakfast bars, protein shakes and even Pringles. You name it. People have gone as far as to jokingly

As we roll into October many things are expected. On Self-Respect for Students Students should have a base set of expectations for all professors

Erik Jonasson II Opinion Editor

The bond between a professor and their students is a bond that we all must traverse in college. This bond can lead to a love of one’s field of study when done

right. Or this can lead to a full-on rebellion against an unjust and unqualified professor. A professor should be flexible and available to students. As paying customers to the university, students should not be bashed for just having basic expectations for a professor of a class. These expectations are the same expectations we should have in all aspects of our lives, from our friends and family to our career paths. These expectations are nothing more than having respect for ourselves and having the dignity to stand

up for ourselves. In general, if the majority of a class is failing an exam there is obviously something wrong with the instruction of the course. A professor who notices this and reevaluates their teaching strategy is one that displays the professionalism required for higher education. Whereas a professor who instead allows students to depend on a curve or, worse, chooses to blame the students for their inability to instruct in the course is something that any selfrespecting student should be disgusted at.

Our job is to learn, but a professor’s job is to instruct. Furthermore, a professor should not expect anything more from students as they would expect from themselves. If professors expect students to move mountains, then the professor should strive to move mountains for students. Add content to Blackboard, send updates on office hour changes and listen to suggestions made by students to better aid them. Any professor who willingly uses the excuse that it is too hard for them to fulfill a commitment or a simple request is not fit to instruct.

Finally, a professor needs to be understanding. College is very important, and all students can agree on this. We give our time, our money and pretty much our entire lives to do what we do every day. But, there exists situations where even the most important parts of our lives need to take a backseat to life. A chance to see family whom you may only have one chance to meet a year. Or perhaps a wedding or even the passing of a friend are all events in life that warrant time. A professor should un-

derstand this because a professor is human. Don’t fail a student for going to a funeral of a close friend. I promise you, no one will ever forget a funeral, a last chance to say goodbye to a friend, but they will forget a quiz. I will not be ashamed to hold my professors to the same standards that I hold myself at my jobs or in the classroom. I will not take an unjust answer. And neither should any student at NDSU. In college, we are here for our passions, not poor instruction.

Make-up Enthusiast Wins New York Fashion Week Trip Why we should take a chance that seems impossible

Hannah’s Instagram highlights a simplistic artistic design.

Charli Wolenetz Contributing Writer

An old high school friend of mine won a contest of a lifetime and I was fortunate enough to connect with her and find out more about her envious experiences. Her experiences highlight a need for us to pursue opportunities we think are impossible. This requires us to put ourselves out there, even when we think we don’t stand a chance. Small choices can lead us to some of the greatest experiences. 23-year-old Hannah Juliot won a trip to see Christian Siriano’s New York Fashion Week show. She was the sole winner of the contest hosted by Elf Cosmetics. For those who don’t know, NYFW is the biggest week for fashion in the United States. Designers reveal

their latest creations for the upcoming spring and summer collections. Socialites and celebrities receive highly sought after invites and fill the audiences. Hannah’s small choice was to follow both Christian Siriano’s and Elf Cosmetics’ Instagram pages. She also had to comment #elfheartschristian on Elf’s page. Hannah was in good company with notable celebrities and models in attendance. Leslie Jones, Vanessa Williams, Danielle Brooks, Patricia Clarkson and model Coco Rocha, to name a few. Leslie Jones, SNL cast member and comedian, even went viral for her loud and enthusiastic cheers at this event. A quick search on Buzzfeed will bring you right to this moment. influencers and experts, ate delicious meals and had her hair styled before the event. Traveling alone is something Hannah hadn’t done before, but she says it was a confidence booster. “Knowing I could navigate NYC by myself and interact with all these beauty experts who would normally intimidate me was a huge confidence builder,” said Juliot. This was a thrilling experience that some would say comes from luck, but I beg to differ. Her winning was due to her keeping a watchful eye on the things that interest her: fashion, makeup, and graphic design. Although this was a fun event to be a part of, Hannah says it also made her think about the different options she has career-wise. “I have a graphic design degree and am passionate about makeup, it’s cool to see I could potentially combine

those into a career,” said Juliot. She continually looks for ways to promote and enhance her interests and hobbies, saying, “This experience makes me want to put more effort into my Instagram and other social media accounts, knowing that’s what gave me this opportunity. I want to post more about makeup and see if anything could happen with brands reposting my images, or building up a following of my own.” At the very least, Hannah remembers thinking, ““If I never get to go to another fashion show, that’s okay, because this one is everything I wanted it to be.” Next time you submit for a contest, job, or internship, remember to put yourself out there because you will never know if you can obtain something unless you try.

A Diamond in the Rough Why do we make a big deal over a mediocre gemstone?

Grant Gloe Staff Writer

Can we be honest about diamonds? Once you get past the “oh wow, oh my, what a honky tonk badonkarock” of seeing a ring with a big ole diamond on it, it’s not all that great. It may look nice, but as far as gemstones go, you can find one that looks so much better and unique than what is essentially fancy glass. So what’s the big deal?

of control, they could shove a mountain of diamonds in their closet like old shoes or a broken vacuum and say, “Oh wow look at these super rare stones we happened upon! How cool, right guys?” But how do you get people to buy your crap product? Rare doesn’t mean great. Polar bears are unfortunately dying out, but I’m not about to give one a hug. Well, let’s say you have a lemonade stand, and just that morning you bought every single lemon in town. You are jefe de lemonada, so you try to slap a $100 price tag on a glass. Terrible Fantasy Advice | Week 6 Let the Minnesotan set something straight Taylor Schloemer Sports Editor

I am a proud Minnesotan. When it comes to sports, that is a curse and a blessing. In fact, there are three kinds of feelings for a Minnesota sports fan. There is the “we are just terrible” feeling that has been predominate in the last few years. Then there is “we are swinging above our weight and shouldn’t be in this position” feeling, like the Twins last week. Finally, there is the “surely, we are better than this” feeling, like the Vikings in the first half against Chicago Monday night. This is what I am currently feeling with my fantasy team. As my colleague pointed out last week, I am currently on a bit of a skid. That skid could have ended Monday with a different flex play. I went with Stefon Diggs over Kyle Rudolph. The wide receiver scored nothing, while the tight end scored 10 points — the number I needed to get the win. But, instead of being mad about not playing Rudolph, I am more frustrated with another issue surrounding the tight end. His celebration was

“Duck, Duck, Gray Duck.” No goose. No “e” in the color. This is Minnesota after all. While everyone else goes on a wild goose chase, I get to give fantasy advice for this week.

Quarterbacks

Are you still starting Eli Manning? If that is the case, you must be desperate. Under no circumstances should Eli start now. It’s reasonable to assume that Yankee outfielder Aaron Judge can go and play receiver for the Giants, seeing as he his healthy and can catch a ball in New York. He may play baseball, but does that really matter after four Giants receivers went out last week? Eli has not been great this year even before this injury plague struck his receiving corps, and now, there is just one Giant worth owning (more on that below). This is more of a personal issue, and I think it stems from being that pessimistic Minnesota sports fan, but play Alex Smith at your own risk. Surely, he can’t keep up the pace, and it will be the week I start him when he falls. So, I am just going to keep him on the bench, which means everyone else should play him. At home against Pittsburgh this week is a tough matchup, so start with caution.

For the Vikings, it is now becoming a toss-up of who starts. Sam Bradford returned from his knee injury and played like Sam Bradford. Case Keenum came in for relief and looked sharp in the second half. If you must play one, hope that Keenum gets the start. If Bradford starts, he will need a full week of practice to get on the same wavelength as his receivers.

Running backs

With Dalvin Cook lost for the season, many thought that Latavius Murray would take over the lead role in Minnesota. That would have kept Jerick McKinnon as the pass-catching back. On Monday, the latter looked The Gadwall is also known as the ‘gray duck.’ to be the every-down back Angeles Rams. fans? The answer, it turns by the end of the game. Peterson. The rest of the Cardinals’ secondary was just torn to shreds by Carson Wentz last week, so DeSean Jackson will be the primary benefactor.

Tight ends

I said we will get to the Giants eventually, and here we are. Manning will have to throw to ball to someone, and that someone will likely be Evan Ingram. The rookie tight end could line up on the perimeter given all the injuries. Even with a trip to Denver this week, there is a lot to like for the rest of the season.

A Tight FCS Field Across the Board Teams close in on James Madison and NDSU at the top Taylor Schloemer Sports Editor

Six weeks into the season, the FCS football field is starting to show its true colors. While the top two teams surprise no one at this point, the rest are fighting it out. Now is a good time to look at the big picture in the FCS.

Missouri Valley

The Valley has six teams in the FCS Coaches Poll Top 25. Four of those teams are in the top eight. North Dakota State at No. 2 comes as no surprise, but South Dakota at No. 4 is. USD has invested heavily in their football program, and the investment is paying off. The Coyotes

are also undefeated, with quarterback Chris Streveler playing extremely well. Behind them, it seems that the only thing that will stop the Valley teams from making the playoffs will be each other. For Youngstown State, ranked No. 8, a loss to USD last week and a visit from the Bison make their road to the playoffs tight. Same goes for Western Illinois, South Dakota State, Northern Iowa and Illinois State, who started the season 4-0 before losing to Northern Arizona last week. The Jackrabbits have already lost to Youngstown State, while the Panthers have stuttered to a 2-3 start and take a trip to Brookings this week. One of those

losses was to Western Illinois. The Leathernecks have a loss to the Coyotes.

Colonial Athletic Association

The CAA has grown into a very competitive conference. So much so that James Madison is getting “College GameDay” this week. The Dukes are still ranked No. 1 in the nation and are still undefeated. They will take a 17-game win streak into Saturday’s matchup against Villanova, who is ranked No. 11. In between the Dukes and Wildcats in the rankings is the other Wildcats. New Hampshire sits at 4-1, with their only loss to Holy Cross. They face a solid matchup

this weekend against a Stony Brook team that just slipped out of the rankings. Richmond slots in at No. 13 after a double-overtime game against Albany. The Spiders are off to a 3-2 start. Elon sits atop the CAA due to staying unbeaten in conference games while JMU and New Hampshire were on bye last week.

Southern Conference

Wofford have begun to separate themselves from the rest of the SoCon already. The only undefeated team left in the conference came in at No. 5 in the poll this week. Western Carolina tested the Terriers last week, but Wofford was able to come away with the overtime win. Western Carolina came in at No. 21

this week. Samford is the third team ranked in the conference, coming in at No. 19 this week. They have one loss on the year coming against Western Carolina.

Big Sky

After losing to the Bison, Eastern Washington has gone on a four-game win streak. The Eagles remain undefeated in the conference to sit atop the Big Sky. Included in the streak is a tough win in Missoula against Montana. EWU sits at No. 10 in the poll. Weber State and Northern Arizona are also undefeated in Big Sky play, but have played one less conference game than the Eagles. While Northern Arizona is not ranked, Weber State slots in

at No. 18. As for the other North Dakota school, the Fighting Hawks are struggling to a 2-4 start and 1-2 in the Big Sky.

Other notes

Jacksonville State hold the No. 3 spot in the poll, having only lost to Georgia Tech of the FBS in their second game. One thing holding the Gamecocks back is a poor strength of schedule moving forward. North Carolina A&T is the only FCS program to have a 6-0 record, but rank only No. 16 this week. Two Ivy League programs remain undefeated at 4-0, Columbia and Princeton.

NBA Screwing Things Up

NBA changes that either are or could be happening Cody Tusler Staf Writer

The NBA made a huge announcement over the past week regarding changes to the NBA All-Star game. The teams have always been the West versus the East. Now, the two teams will be determined by two captains picking teams. Now, I am not sure if it is going to be two players that pick the teams, or coaches or two former players serving as team captains. As some may remember, the NFL tried a similar situation for three years where a former player served as the captain. Players included the likes of Jerry Rice, Michael Irving and Dion Sanders to name just a few. The NBA had to do something to try and make the All-Star game more interesting. The game, under the old format, was just two teams trying to do the flashiest plays with no defense, besides an occasional block or steal, and try to rack up the score and get somewhere close to the 200 mark. The one thing I do like about drafting

teams is that current teammates might get split up and play against each other. So, the big four from the Golden State Warriors might be playing against each other for a change. I just hope that LeBron James and Kyrie Irving are on the same team. If Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook can play on the AllStar team last year together, anyone can make up and play on the same team again. All in all, I don’t see a lot changing for the All-Star game. The NFL Pro Bowl was the same in their draft years. Nothing changed and, to me, it made it worse. The only all-star game that is worth anything is the MLB All-Star game. The winning team gets a bonus at the end of the year for all players, so why can’t other sports think of scenarios like that to make the game more competitive? So who do you think will be captain? Will it be two players like LeBron and Steph Curry, or two former players like Shaq and Charles Barkley? Another topic that is in for possible

discussion is the postseason format. The current format is simple: you take the best eight teams from the West and they play each other in a bracket, with teams from the East doing the same. You have the one seed versus the eight in a best of seven games, two versus seven, etc. And you go all the way until you have the winner from the West and East play one another. Now, Adam Silver is thinking of doing a top-16 team bracket and eliminating conference play all together. The postseason could wind up looking something like having 10 teams from the West and eight teams from the East. The West has been a tougher conference for the last few years, with teams missing the playoffs that could have made it if their were in the East. If Silver decides to go that route, he should change the regular season too. With 30 teams in the league, each team should play the others twice, once home and once away, and see which teams have the best records. There you cut the season to 82 games to 58 games. Now you don’t have

guys like LeBron complaining about the season being too long and that players need rest. You’re a professional athlete getting paid millions to play a game, get on the court and stop complaining. I don’t like this idea either. You’re on a team that is set in a conference and it should be the best from each conference. If you don’t like it, either go play somewhere else or don’t play. Every other of the big four sports has the same concept as this and it has worked for many years. And besides, if you’re a team that would have only made the playoffs if you’re in a different conference, more than likely you’ll get eliminated in the first round. Out of the major four sports and their commissioners, it seems like Rob Manfred and Gary Bettman are the only two that know what they are doing when it comes to running their sports. NBA please bring back David Stern. And for Roger Goodell, since we can’t forget about you, I have one thing to say to you (coughs and clears throat), “BOOO!”

Bison Set to Test Their Mettle in the Rust Belt Face stiff challenge in No. 8 Youngstown State

The Bison defense has kept teams quiet, but comes up against its toughest test so far against Youngstown State.

Staff Writer

Save for an anticlimactic game with Eastern Washington in the season’s second week, the North Dakota State Bison football team has been untested this season. Games against Mississippi Valley State and Robert Morris, cellar dwellers of the Southwestern Athletic Conference and the Northeast Conference, bookended the Bison’s 40-13 romp of the Eagles. The Herd also opened conference play against the two weakest opponents on their conference schedule. That will all change this Saturday when the Bison face off against Youngstown State. The game against the Penguins begins a stretch of six games against five opponents currently ranked in the FCS Coaches Poll Top 25. The Bison have put up gaudy numbers against inferior opponents throughout the year. NDSU hung 77 points on the Delta Devils and then 56 on the Colonials. Against these opponents, the Bison have averaged 318.6 yards rushing per game and totaled 23 rushing touchdowns. The weak schedule tilts the scales in favor of the Bison, who currently top the FCS in points per game, total yards per game and rushing yards per game. To the shock of many, Youngstown State reached the FCS championship

game last season, bringing an end to a 10-year playoff drought. The Penguins return eight offensive starters from last year’s 12-4 squad. Highlighting the returning starters is running back Tevin McCaster. The junior has tallied 536 yards rushing and 8 rushing touchdowns thus far. His 107.2 yards rushing per game ranks ninth in the FCS and second in the Missouri Valley, behind only Lance Dunn. “(He’s) difficult to bring down one on one, difficult to bring down on first contact,” Bison head coach Chris Klieman said of McCaster on Monday. “You have to be really good tacklers in the hole or he’s going to carry you three, four, five yards. He’s got really good speed. He’s a good one cut vertical runner.” Klieman believes that for NDSU to have success in slowing down McCaster, his defense will need to improve on their performance against LeMonte Booker of Indiana State. “We have to tackle better than we did last Saturday,” the head coach noted. “If we don’t tackle McCaster better than we did on Saturday, he’s going to have a really big day against us.” Complimenting McCaster has been freshman Christian Turner. Turner’s abilities as a receiver as well as a tailback have been an imposition to opposing defenses. The former two-time Ohio Division II state champion has racked up 316 yards

and a touchdown out of the backfield and 206 yards receiving and two touchdown catches. His 5.4 yards per carry lead the team. Another returning starter for the Penguins is quarterback Hunter Wells. Wells took the reigns for YSU midway through 2016 and posted a 7-2 record as a starter. Wells, however, suffered a dislocation of his throwing shoulder in the Penguins’ week two triumph over Robert Morris, leading to sophomore Nathan Mays taking over the starting role. Wells threw four passes against South Dakota State two weeks later, but it has been Mays who has seen the rest of the action. Mays has completed 64.4 percent of his passes and connected on one touchdown. The signal caller has also been a threat with his legs, recording 256 yards rushing and 4 rushing touchdowns. It is still uncertain who will be lining up under center on Saturday for the Penguins. Youngstown State favors their running game and controlling the time of possession, an area which Klieman thinks will be critical to a victory on Saturday. “They want to hang on to the football and so do we,” Klieman said. “We have to be able to create some negative plays so they’re not in second-and-4, secondand-5, which they’ve been in an awful lot.” The strength of the Penguins lies in their defense, a unit which is the class of

both the Missouri Valley and the FCS. “They’re really good on defense at all positions,” Klieman stated. “They play really fast; they know what they’re doing; they have their adjustments. There’s not a weakness on their defense.” The Penguins defense lost four starters from last season’s title game lineup, including Derek Rivers and Avery Moss, two pass rushers drafted into the NFL. However, the unit is still up to their championship form. YSU ranks ninth in the nation in scoring defense, allowing only 15 points per game, and 17th in total defense. Justus Reed, a junior transfer from the University

of Florida, has stepped into the defensive end role vacated by Moss and Rivers. Reed has compiled 14 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, 1 sack and a fumble recovery. Behind Reed, returning linebacker Armand Dellovade has been a playmaker for the Penguins. The junior has recorded 24 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, a sack, and an interception. Dellovade anchors a linebacking corps which returns all three starters from the championship game. In the secondary, Jalyn Powell has moved from strong safety to free safety. Powell became a starter in YSU’s run to the championship game last year and has been an invaluable asset for the defense. The senior leads

the team with 37 tackles and has added 4 pass breakups. While NDSU has been able to dominate weaker opponents, a daunting challenge awaits them, and Klieman has ensured his players are ready. “We played there two years ago, and it was as physical a game as we had played,” he said. “They’re really good up front on both sides of the ball, and they have really good skill. We know the tall order we have this week.” Saturday’s tilt with Youngstown State gives the Bison an opportunity for a statement win and, more importantly, an opportunity to stay on top of the Missouri Valley.
