Get puzzled: Sudokus, crosswords and much, much more

BISON 2016, a Year for the Books ABROAD Adventures and politics and Spaniards, oh my Jordyn Meskan

Contributing Writer

As 2016 comes to a close, so does my time abroad. What started out as a desire to travel the world, improve my Spanish and immerse myself in a different culture has since turned into reality. All throughout college I knew I wanted to study in Spain, however the biggest question was what city would be perfect for me. In such a culture-rich country, choosing a city seemed like an impossible task. From Google-imaging various cities to asking people who have studied or currently live in Spain for their input, I eventually and confidently decided on Granada … and I couldn’t have been happier with my decision. The preparation to study abroad, however, was no simple feat. From filling out applications and forms to taking a day trip to Chicago to apply for my student visa to earning money all summer, everything has paid off. I probably spent more time making spreadsheets for studying abroad than I spent on any spreadsheet I had to do for class. While preparation was exciting and a little stressful, I see the fruits of my labor every day. The locals I’ve met along the way have taught me so much about everyday life in Spain as they have shared their culture with me. With all the craziness taking place in the United States, American news has been a popular subject when talking with Spaniards. These conversations, however, have given me an opportunity to learn about events taking place in Spain as well. My time abroad has also given me opportunities to

travel throughout Spain as well as outside of Spain. I was able to explore a total of eight new countries and cities across Europe and Africa. My travels took me on adventures such as reenacting scenes from “The Sound of Music” in Salzburg, Austria, climbing to the top of the Duomo in Florence, watching a Real Madrid game in Madrid, exploring the grounds of Versailles and hiking through part of the Mid Atlas Mountains in Morocco, just to name a few. While taking advantage of the opportunities to travel, it’s been important for me to find a balance between traveling and exploring Granada and the surrounding area. One of my favorite spots to go has been the Sierra Nevada Mountains. To fully enjoy what the mountains offer, you need to be in the mountains. Some of my favorite memories of Spain are in the mountains. Whether it was climbing Veleta, the Sierra Nevada’s second tallest peak, enjoying lunch on a rock on the side of a mountain or just swaying in a hammock overlooking the valley, the mountains never disappointed. But hiking isn’t the only way to experience the mountains. Now that the mountains are covered in snow, I took advantage of the opportunity to go skiing. From taking the gondola up higher to carving my way down the slopes, I was thrilled. Fully take advantage of the Sierra Nevada Mountains: check. Studying abroad has been a learning experience and a growing experience. I’ve learned how to manage on my own, work through the language barriers and

Beautiful views near the Duomo in Florence, Italy. navigate my way through new places. It taught me that it’s OK to get lost every now and then and to roll with the punches. Living abroad has also built up my confidence and independence. It’s empowering, really, to have a newfound confidence to travel solo to places you’ve never been. Studying abroad is like a hallway with doors waiting to be opened. Behind each door is a new adventure waiting for you to grasp it. As we ring in the New Year, what doors will you open in On the slopes of the Sierra Nevadas. 2017?

The Trolls of Putnam Hall You don’t need television when you have an office drama like this

Rio Bergh

Features Editor

Trolls roam the corridors of Putnam Hall. Not Internet trolls (although that is possible), actual trolls, with their goofy hair and weird little gems instead of belly buttons. While the trolls never move during normal hours, when the offices close, they roam around and find different spots to hang out for the next day. The graduate students of the hall are baffled as to the origins of the trolls in question, but theories abound. Most agree Buddy the troll originated in Eastern Europe. Unfortunately, he didn’t have an easy childhood — imbibing too much colloidal silver turned his hair blue, making him an easy target for bullying. To escape his bullies, Buddy ran away from home and rode the rails through Europe, before eventually making his way stateside. After a brief stint with the Blue Man Group, Buddy realized performance art

Buddy decided to take up permanent residence near the Graduate Center for Writers in Putnam to better suit his writerly proclivities. For the time being, Putnam is his home. Buddy finds the open prairies free his mind, unlike the imprisoning buildings of big cities. Plus, the cheap alcohol helps his method. Putnam’s grad students have long been astounded

by Buddy’s ability to stand stock-still during the day. As it turns out, this is how Buddy deals with his blistering hangovers. Ah, what a writer will go through for the sake of a good method. In addition to gaining wide literary fame, Buddy’s writing in the Troll Tribune caught the attention of one Holly the troll. Inspired by Buddy’s travel writing, Holly, a punk rocker easily identified by her bubblegum-pink hair, left her band in Germany to

follow in his footsteps — she recently tracked him to Putnam. Buddy and Holly haven’t met yet. Her constant guitar playing does nothing to alleviate his hangovers. His nights of obliterated writing don’t facilitate socializing. Buddy is currently under the impression that Putnam Hall has an incredibly noisy, irritating new tenant. Holly thinks Buddy might have a drinking problem. But for some reason, I can’t help thinking it’s meant to be.

DIY Fashion Christmas Gifts

How to make trendy presents at a fraction of the retail price

Keyona Elkins

With the holidays quickly approaching, time is running short to buy gifts. Here are a few do-it-yourself ideas for some fashionable gifts this holiday season.

Students needed to complete a series of agriculture-themed tasks with their robots at this years BEST.

Lace-up top

Vintage-look T-shirts are an easy way to rock the lace-up trend. They sell for over $100 at big city boutiques and average about $45 on Etsy, but you can make them for much cheaper with thrift store tees or sweatshirts. • Find a loose graphic T-shirt with a cool design. • Try it on and decide how deep to make the cutout. Mark the point with chalk, pencil or pins. • Use a ruler (or something with a straight edge) to draw two symmetrical lines from the neckline to the low point. • Cut out the front triangle. You can choose to cut out that section of the collar if or leave it in. • Sew fabric trim/ribbon over the side edges by hand or with a machine. • Mark where you want the eyelets to go, making sure both sides have the same amount and they are evenly spaced. • Cut small holes/slits at each mark and pound in the eyelets with a hammer. It’s best to buy a pack of eyelets that comes with tools to help you hammer them in correctly. • Use your choice of string or cord to lace the top just like you would your shoes. Start at the top, and tie a knot on the inside at the bottom of the cutout to finish.

You can transform $5 T-shirts from Savers into unique gifts for both the quirky and edgy friends on your nice list.

Cutouts and cold shoulders are major right now. You could scour the mall for a cute trendy sweatshirt, or you could find one that matches your friend’s style and then cut the trend factor into it yourself. • Find a hoodie or

Scene-stealing embellished jeans are on the forefront of fashion and can currently only be found for hundreds of dollars at upscale retailers. The fashionista on your list will love unwrapping this designer-lookalike denim. • Thrift shop for some old mom jeans in a boyfriend

hoodless sweatshirt. Either will work. • Decide what kind of cutouts you want. Choose from simple elbow slits, large cutout shoulders, a deep V with the hood or collar left intact or a combination of smaller cutouts. • Try the sweatshirt on and roughly mark the location of the cutouts. • Lay it flat and draw the cutting lines more precisely. You can either use a ruler to make sure the cutouts symmetrical or free hand it on one side and then cut the other side to match.

Distressed embellished jeans

or straight fit without much stretch. • Try them on (estimating how they will fit on whomever will get them) and mark where the hem should hit and which areas should get distressing, rips, holes, sequins, etc. • Cut the hems at your marking and fray them by using a seam ripper or tweezers to pull out the horizontal white threads. You can also create a trendy stepped hem by cutting the front pant leg a couple inches higher than the back. • Cut out areas where you want large holes — usually around the knees. • To make rips, cut horizontal lines about an inch apart and use a tweezers to pull out the vertical blue threads, leaving the horizontal whites ones intact. • Distress the edges of holes and rips and other areas using sandpaper, a cheese grater, a pumice stone and/or the edge of a

scissors. • For a dramatic look, hand sew on large pailette sequins, layering and mixing colors and sizes. Alternatively, sew on scattered traditional white pearls for a subtler vintage feel.

Spliced tee

Remember those halfheart friendship necklaces from Claire’s you used to buy with your elementary school friends? These tees are the modern grown-up equivalent. Combine sports teams, fandoms, schools or just ironic pairings to create unique mash-up tees. • Find two T-shirts to pair. • Cut each evenly down the middle or at an angle for an asymmetrical variation. • Sew half of the first tee to half of the second down the center front and back. • Cut the longer hem and fold it under twice to match the shorter hem and sew, or fold the center seam allowances back and sew for the asymmetrical look.

Robots invaded the SHAC Saturday as part of the Northern Plains BEST Robotics Regional Championship. The competition, hosted by North Dakota State’s College of Engineering, showcased the work of 35 teams of middle and high school students from across the Midwest, including North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Friday morning, these students suited up for

marketing presentations with NDSU faculty and various area experts as judges. The competition continued Saturday with the battle of the robots, where teams faced off in a mission to score the most points possible while navigating this year’s “Bet the Farm” agriculture-themed course. Students faced tasks like picking corn and tomatoes and planting seeds with only the use of the robot. Next year’s competition theme is “Crossfire,” where teams will be challenged with issues related to fire safety.

Always Board? Weible Halls white boards provide cheap entertainment to passersby Phoebe Ellis Staff Writer

First year students are generally required to live on campus, however they aren’t required to make the residence halls their homes. Some students have taken it upon themselves to get to know the people around them with some white boards, asking questions to passersby. Throughout North Weible Hall, door decals and white boards invite people to engage. Some questions ask passersby what their favorite Christmas song is, if they could travel anywhere, where it would be and what the result of crossing a snowman and vampire is. Responses to these questions go from inside jokes, to taking the question seriously, to inappropriate puns. The questions reflect an outlet for fun in the stress of finals, and a chance to get to know the people that live around a person. Not all boards ask questions, some show the seasonal spirit with phrases such as “Merry Christmas,” “Happy Holidays” or “Let’s Get Lit!” A small moment of celebration at the start of a groggy Monday morning can go a long way. If not

the initial phrase itself, some responses such as “princess hotdog muffin” or “Beware of Dog” followed by the clever description of a roommate may trigger a chuckle. Some individuals got creative with door decals and created elf bodies out of different colored construction paper, and printed out a picture of their face to glue on it. Alternatively, gaining

enjoyment from a science pun may tickle some student’s ribs, like the question of “Are you made of copper and tellurium? Because you are CuTe.” Whether it be festive door decals, bad puns, mixer questions or daily encouragement, the white boards within the residence halls can generally be paired with entertainment value.

WTF 2K16

This year has truly been exceptional. Taylor Schloemer Sports Editor

There were a lot of good sports stories in 2016. There were just as many that either

1

Colin Kaepernick’s protest

It is easy to understand that Kaepernick wanted to spread the message about the issues that minorities face in America. Yes, it is an issue, and yes it needs to be solved. However, at what point does spreading the message stop and action needs to start. Maybe Week

led to a face palm, a sick feeling or bashing of heads into a wall. So here are the top four dumbest, craziest, most random stories of sports from 2016. Three of the NFL season. (Personal opinion here, the disrespect to the nation outweighs the respect gained in doing this, take it or leave it I don’t care.) He had a decent platform to do action, and missed. The least he could have done was to vote for someone who he thought could create change. Even if the name of his write-in candidate was his own.

Ah, suh dude. I think we’re all in agreement that 2016 was a pretty wild ride, we even got to have an extra day to question our lives and the actions of humankind this year.

In the news

Populism stemmed the two largest what-the-f—k moments of 2016; the slaughter by republicans in the United States general election and Brexit. First, a disclaimer: this doesn’t stem from any pre-conceived political beliefs or any endorsements by The Spectrum. The mainstream American media grossly misrepresented the voting population’s thoughts with advanced polling and Brexit passed with a very narrow margin of victory. Polls leading up to the presidential election had Hillary Clinton winning with a margin of at least two points, the New York Times reported. Clinton did win the popular vote, but Donald Trump ultimately won the Electoral College and thus the presidency. Mainstream media affiliates where

Donald Trump’s victory left the world appalled in part because of inaccurate polling. Brexit, too, shocked the world. Immediately following the announcement of the British voting to leave the European Union, the British currency devalued by 10 percent overnight, the Washington Post reported. The British pound has not rebounded since. The results of Donald Trump and the Brexit move come with increasing populism in the United States and Britain. Populism is best defined

as rule by the common people, those that do not want Washington insiders running the country. In more local aspects, the Dakota Access Pipeline clouded news from North Dakota for much of the year. The pipeline, denied by the Army Corps of Engineers Sunday, was slated to be built across the Missouri River near the Standing Rock Sioux reservation on land privately owned by the Army Corps. The land protested by activists due to concerns over the Standing Rock Sioux tribe holding the land sacred, as well as concerns that the pipeline

would pollute drinking water. Nationwide, Black Lives Matter movements have continued to progress and protest police brutality toward African Americans. One catalyst for protesting occurred in August when Philando Castile was killed by a police officer in Falcon Heights, Minnesota. A Fargo police officer was killed in the line of duty for the first time since the 1800s in 2016. The officer, Jason Moszer, was shot when responding to a domestic violence call in February. He passed away the following morning.

child falling his enclosure. Another meme that transpired throughout 2016 is that of Ken Bone. Bone is a 34-yearold resident of the St. Louis metropolitan area who happened to ask a question to Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton on live television. A meme, like Harambe, was also slain outright in 2016. Leonardo DeCaprio

won an Oscar for best actor for his leading role as Hugh Glass in “The Revenant.” Memes typically do not die outright; rather they fade away like the relevancy of Martin O’Malley. Some memes are immortal, too, but that’s a story for another time. Water bottles flipped into pop culture in 2016 after a video went viral

of a student dramatically flipping a water bottle at his talent show. A Fergus Falls man, Rick Swenson, broke a world record for longest distance traveled in a pumpkin this year, too. The Grand Forks Herald reported Swenson presumably and unofficially set the record to 26 miles.

The Spectrum Reviews Campus Bathrooms Mostly so you don’t have to

PHOTOS BY ERIK JONASSON II | THE SPECTRUM

Second floor bathroom in the Family Life Center.

Erik Jonasson II Opinion Editor

We can’t deny it, we all have that special place on campus. The place where we feel the most comfortable to sit on a toilet and relieve ourselves like it was mom and dad’s bathroom back home. Sadly this is not science. Finding that special bathroom takes trial and error, so kind of science? As a freshman, I came to NDSU with a goal, to use a bathroom in every building on campus. I can say to this date I have about 40 buildings down. From this, I have been able to differentiate between the good, the bad and the bathrooms in Ladd and Dunbar. North Dakota State, you have some pretty godawful bathrooms. These are the bathrooms you avoid at all costs. If you go to these bathrooms you are guaranteed to have a bad time.

The worst bathrooms on campus 5. The bathrooms on the

first floor of the Memorial Union I love studying in the

Restroom in the new A. Genn Hill building.

Union. I honestly do. Taking study breaks in the Union bathrooms is just sad, though. None of the bathrooms really feel homie. Compared to their counterparts on the second floor, they are severely lacking. 4/10 4. The bathroom on the second floor Morrill Gross. This is the first bathroom I went in and there was someone else in there as well. What is gross about it though is the aesthetics. I in no way want a window behind me while I am sitting on the porcelain throne. Rather church like really, but please not in the bathroom. Also, the sink, I don’t want to bump shoulders with the person next to me. Avoid if you are planning on sitting and playing on your phone. 3/10 3. The bathroom on the second floor of the AgSystem’s Building This is gross. This was my bathroom during Calculus recitation. Needless to say, it is cramped and gross. The colors are gross and there is no room. It also kind of smells of sadness and dead dreams. 2/10 2. The bathroom on 2nd floor of the Family Life Center When compared to its

counterpart on first floor this bathroom is one of the biggest disappointments on campus. Gross red tile that seems straight out of the 1970s. If you value yourself, you wouldn’t find yourself in this bathroom at all. 1. Any bathroom in Ladd or Dunbar It is no secret that Ladd and Dunbar are the grossest buildings on campus. With that being said, their bathrooms couldn’t make you feel sadder. Not only is there very little lighting, but it smells old and underappreciated. It seems like the most likely bathroom on campus to be haunted as well, so watch out for Casper while you wipe. 0/10

The best bathrooms on campus

These bathrooms are amazing. If your brain is mushy, and you just need to use the bathroom to give yourself that break, treat yourself to these fantastic bathrooms. Honorable mentions include bathrooms in Loftsgard Hall and of course the Stockbridge dorm bathrooms. 5. The bathrooms on 2nd floor of the Memorial Union

Urinal in Ladd Hall.

KNDS

This is my Spectrum bathroom. Located so closely to the office it isn’t uncommon for me to go to this bathroom multiple times in an hour to check my hair. It is warm, inviting and convenient. 7/10 4. The bathroom on 2nd floor Eyhl Hall Of all of the campus bathrooms, this one almost takes the cake. The bright lights, freshly redone walls and appliances, as well as the incredibly clean surfaces, make for a wonderful experience. Not only is this a great place to make a pit stop, but the aesthetically pleasing environment makes for a great place to take a casual, but insta-worthy mirror pic. 9/10 3. The bathrooms on 1st floor Ceres

This is one of the homiest public bathrooms I’ve ever used. If you are looking for a peaceful bathroom where you are instantly comfortable to do your business this is your place. A warm environment that will remind you of your grandma’s bathroom makes for one of the better campus bathrooms. I suggest putting this bathroom on your “bathroom vacation” must during finals week. 9.2/10 2. The bathroom on the 1st floor of the Family Life Center: This bathroom is my secret. I just recently discovered that this bathroom was redone. Redone, and now beautiful. Amazing place to relax and take in the smells, mostly because it smells of clean, not of mildew.

Nice tile, nice sinks, hell, even the toilet feels better. Is this how heaven’s public bathrooms feel? 9.5/10 1. The gender-neutral bathrooms in the A. Glenn Hill Center The best bathroom on campus period. You wanna lock yourself in a bathroom and spend hours upon hours on your phone forgetting about that important exam coming up, look no further. This bathroom is clean, small and here’s the best part, completely private. No one being annoying, no other foreign smells. Just your own door, your own toilet, and your own stink. This is the bathroom other bathrooms look up to. Enjoy the privacy and laugh at memes on your phone, you deserve it champ. 10/10

It is hard out there for an engineering student. We have math all the time and, of course, it sucks always being right. How to Guide: Beat Your Boss in Madden

And avoid getting fired in the process Cody Tusler Staff Writer

I’m pretty sure that most sports fans have played one of the Madden games. With the latest, Madden ‘17, coming out just a few short months ago, here are some fun tips to help you defeat your family, friends, co-workers or your boss. Yes, I have played and beat my boss on more than one occasion. Just ask Taylor Schloemer. Out of the five times we have played, or something like that, he has beat me once. Here is my keys to winning and being the greatest headto-head Madden player of all time. When you play Madden you want an offense that can both run and pass the ball. It helps if the back can catch as well. Two quick teams that come to mind are the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals. Both these teams can pass and run. Le’Veon Bell for Pittsburgh and David Johnson are two of the best receiving backs. What really sucks is when someone has both on their fantasy team. Yes, this is true and don’t ask me how it happened. It was a mess and I don’t want to talk about it. Looking at the Cardinals, I scored three touchdowns in the first half with Johnson, so him in the game can be just like him

in real life. Also, if you get in a pickle, just throw the ball up to Larry Fitzgerald. Whenever you throw to him, you have one job. Yell “LARRY!” He has the surest hands in the league with 24 drops coming into this year, including postseason. His career most was in 2006 with five drops. So, when in doubt, throw out to Larry. One last offensive note is the different plays. Slants are a good play at almost any time. At times, you have to wait a little while, but usually they work in almost any case. My other favorites are the Spider Two Y Banana and Spider Three Y Banana. These aren’t the actual names in the games, but the play is when you line up with the fullback and halfback formations. You do a play action and the fullback goes out in the flat. He is always open, unless it is man or the guy manually controls a player over there. In which case, hit the tight end that is five to ten more yards up field. Just never throw to the Venus. Defense side of the ball. You take the Denver Broncos if you want a good defense for one reason and one reason only. “STRIP SACK MILLER!” You user Von Miller every play and hope to get to the quarterback and strip sack them. Overall with defense, you blitz every play. It doesn’t matter if it is Engage Eight or a normal

Mike Blitz. Every play you blitz. Remember defense wins championships and you get pressure on the quarterback, your loser friend will make bad plays and will try to rush it and throw a pick or will fumble the ball. Last final notes. You never punt or kick field goals. Point afters are okay to do. On fourth and 27, you call a screen and get behind your big man and hit the hole and get that first down, or you call a deep grow route and hope that he catches it. If he does, “LARRY!” If you play with a guy that does punt, take Steelers. For the soul purpose that Antonio Brown is the punt returner and you try to ninja kick someone in the face like he did to Browns punter Spencer Lanning. Overall, Madden is a game where people get together for bragging rights and friendships and lives may possibly be ruined. Now I hope I gave you all the information to you need to defeat everyone in your life and be the Madden champion. This information is for just normal head-to-head match ups. Don’t ask me about Draft Champions or Madden Ultimate Team. I suck at those, so you are on your own on that one. Happy playing my fellow Madden players and may the odds be ever in your favor.

How to Reduce Stress for Finals 6 things to do before finals to help relieve stress

Bruno Lozano Staff Writer

Finals are here and there are just a couple more weeks before freedom. With finals approaching faster and faster, I have compiled things to do that will help you relieve stress.

1. Express yourself in a creative way

Sometimes, creating something is great way to distract yourself from stress. Drawing, singing, looking at pictures of cute animals or pinning on your Pinterest board for cool things to create are a great way to release endorphins.

2. Laugh

Finals are no laughing matter, but it’s proven that laughing reduces both

momentary and long-term stress by reducing those hormones. Watching funny YouTube videos or Netflix comedies can help you giggle. If you really want a challenge, you can force yourself to laugh. It’s going to feel and look weird, so don’t do it in public.

3. Cute animals

Pets are great for releasing

endorphins in your body. Petting an animal for a couple of minutes can reduce stress and nothing is better than an animal’s unconditional love. If a fuzzy creature isn’t within reach, just looking at pictures of cute animals can brighten your day.

4. Dance like no one is watching

It’s weird and awkward,

but we have all done it at some point. Dancing is not only great exercise but it also helps relieve tension. Not everyone is the best dancer, but it doesn’t matter. Do it in your room, in the shower or when your roommates aren’t home.

5. Make someone else smile

Helping others activates your brain’s relaxation

responses. Take time out of your day to volunteer or help a friend. Their positive reaction will make you feel so much better. 6. Become an inner child Everyone is still connected to their younger self. Do something that you enjoyed doing back then: pop bubble wrap, blow bubbles, play games, get some Play-Doh.

Who Needs Sunlight, Anyway? The best to binge over holiday break Paige Johnson A&E Editor

‘Tis the season to sit back, relax and watch over four hours of your favorite shows. But if you’ve already seen every episode of “Grey’s Anatomy” (multiple times) or finished crying over “Gilmore Girls” (again, multiple times) it can be difficult to find the perfect show. Here’s a list of the best shows currently on Netflix to keep you distracted from life’s responsibilities, at least until January.

“Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries”

What do you get when you combine a crime drama and a sassy Australian detective? Set in Australia in the Roaring ‘20s, “Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries” is perfect for any fan of Sherlock, mysteries or humor. With a nose for trouble and a love of mystery, Miss Phryne Fisher sets up shop as a freelance detective in Australia. With a little help from her ragtag group of companions, including a shy maid, an awkward deputy, surly detective and humorous butler, Miss Fisher solves the most difficult and convoluted cases she finds. Whether it’s going undercover at a circus, solving an ages-old Italian family feud or following buried treasure, Miss Fisher will follow any lead to solve the case. “Miss Fisher” is a well-written and interesting series that will keep you on your toes.

Eight strangers are connected for an unknown reason in Netflix’s original series, ‘Sense8.’

“Sense8”

Netflix’s hit original series is definitely something to pick up this holiday season, especially with the second installment premiering Dec. 23. Eight strangers from around the world are inexplicably linked together telepathically. As they navigate their new-found abilities, they must battle with their own troubles and help each other through their unique talents while trying their best not to interfere with each other’s lives. Trouble brews when a

dangerous man determined to destroy other Sense8’s steps on to the scene. While this show is mainly science fiction, what’s more interesting is the separate lives each character has. Each character has an interesting, complicated life and their own separate set of problems. The character development alone is enough to keep you interested, if the storyline itself doesn’t accomplish the task.

“Portlandia”

Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein star in this

IFC comedy comprised of compiled skits. The two bring to life the weirdness of Portland, Oregon, using a cast of unique characters and weird places. Each episode features a different set of stories, not necessarily connected to each other, and that don’t necessarily have a set plot to them either. Viewers can expect some recurring characters (including feminist bookstore owners Candace and Toni) and celebrity cameos from Jeff Goldblum, Jason Sudeikis, Aubrey Plaza and more. One thing is for sure;

BAGO GAMES | FLICKR.COM

“Portlandia” is a whole bunch of weird you just can’t get enough of.

“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”

“I was working a hard New York job making dough but it made me blue. One day I was crying a lot and so I decided to move to West Covina, California.” The opening credits pretty much explain it. The CWs “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” follows Rebecca, a smart lawyer with a slew of mental and emotional problems. When Rebecca runs into her ex-boyfriend Josh, she decides to move

to California to overcome years of dissatisfaction and potentially rekindle their romance. Things aren’t as easy as they seem, however. Josh has a girlfriend and people are beginning to question Rebecca’s appearance in West Covina. Rebecca herself must question her feelings for Josh. Hilarity ensues as Rebecca stumbles through California life and her own misadventures. All shows mentioned in this article are available on Netflix.

Top Takeaways: My First Year of Fantasy Football I’m not playoff bound, but probably not dead last Casey McCarty Spectrum Staff

Fantasy football seasons are coming to a close, with new league champions being crowned over the next couple of weeks. I am, unsurprisingly, almost statistically ruled out from any contention from being the creme-dela-creme of a testosteronefueled, friendshipchallenging fantasy football league. Before this year I had never sat down to watch a pro-football game that was not either between the Vikings and Packers or the Super Bowl, and even then I only watched for the commercials. I knew next-to-nothing about fantasy football, let alone the sport itself, but I think I’ve learned a lot

so here’s some of my top takeaways from my first year of fantasy.

Karma

I’m a cocky guy when it comes to sports, I hate losing. I was 2-0 at the start of the season and talking mad s—t to fellow league members, most of which doubted me and kept exclaiming I would be the last place finisher in the league. Low-and-behold, karma happened. My win streak would end for months, spiraling down to a six game losing streak and wound up writing this story at a grotesque 4-8. I’m now tied for last place in my league. This luck comes with the understanding that the kind fellow who began the league not caring at 0-5 is now in contention to win

it all. Don’t brag about the small fish you caught within 10 minutes, kids. The larger fish is taking its time and waiting under the dock.

Patience and injury

Whatever you do, have patience in your players. Whether it be game to game or weeks by weeks, don’t make decisions hastily. Of the residents from the island of poorly drafted players that was my original team, Teddy Bridgewater broke himself, Cam Newton got concussed, Dez Bryant snapped his knee and Julian Edelman and Jay Ajayi continued to play very poorly. I dropped Bryant and Ajayi, and traded Newton for Isiah Crowell. I hung on to Edelman until he was traded for Charcandrick West around week eight when Kansas City’s main

running back became concussed. In essence, I jumped a gun and be-rid myself of four really good long-run players because I wanted to win now with players projected high in the current week, not a week out. Injuries happen, sadly, but most aren’t long term and warrant maintaining relatively the same team depending on the urgency and severity of the injury. Bad weeks happen, don’t let them get to your head.

Drafting

Never, ever be predictable in your favored draft picks in a room with everyone else in your league. I advise this because one of my fellow league members picked up that it was my intent to draft Tom Brady in the current round, and so he picked up Brady

one spot before my choice. Drafting players generally comes at a cost of valuing efficiency in reaching high point potential or consistently reaching an average point potential. The best players to draft are those who have high levels of both, obviously. Also when drafting, take the waiver wire into consideration. Don’t pick top quarterbacks in the first round as they’re easier to come by as the season progresses, consistent wide receivers and running backs will increase the value of a team most.

Have fun

At the end of the day, fantasy football is a game and should be treated like one. Have fun, play hard and be competitive, but at the

NDSUSPECTRUM.COM

end of the day remember it is just a game and is not worth losing friends over. There are, in most cases, more important things to life than fantasy football. Sports Editor’s Note: I am also in this league, and have some things to add. One, if you yell out “You guys will never guess who I’m going to pick next!” someone (read, I) will answer, bringing attention to said player. Collusion is a dangerous game; if you want to destroy friendships, allow it. Allow that one guy who knows nothing about sports to set the rules, but someone who knows what their doing to the day-today stuff. And never veto a trade or take away League Manger powers. DON’T DO IT!

New Releases Hitting the Airwaves in 2017 New Year boasts new music from Train, Kelly Clarkson Andrew Fugleberg Contributing Writer

With the New Year coming soon, new sound is also on its way. All genres are coming out, from alternative to rap and country to pop. While not all artists have release dates, anticipation should build after the ball drops.

Train - January

Entitled “A Girl A Bottle A Boat,” Train’s newest album comes out early next year to the enjoyment of several fans. The first single from the album, “Play That Song,” was released on Sept. 29. It’s definitely the kind of sound that Train fans should enjoy: upbeat, fun to sing

along to and gets stuck in your head after the first listen. If you were a fan of “Drops of Jupiter” or “Hey Soul Sister,” then consider checking this album out when it’s released in January.

both been out, to varying degrees of success. Iggy’s new album should be pretty decent, but most fans can’t get past how problematic Azalea can be.

Brad Paisley - February

Iggy Azalea - January

This album is a long time coming, with the artist in production for the last two years, at least. Through planning a tour after her first album, to cancelling it, to rescheduling, Iggy has had a rough time for the last few years. Her new album, “Digital Distortion” is set to release early in 2017, but songs from it have already been out for quite some time. “Team” and “Azillion” have

For all the country fans out there, Brad Paisley is coming out with his 11th studio album right around Valentine’s Day. Entitled “Love and War,” this album promotes a lot of collaborations. Paisley announced his new album at a performance in the iHeartRadio Theater in Los Angeles, where he said his new album would feature Demi Lovato, Mick Jagger and Timbaland. Lead singles “Without a Fight” and “Today” are out now.

They have a classic country sound that pleases country fans and many others alike.

Kelly Clarkson - June

Kelly Clarkson is coming out with a new album next year with a new record label. After winning American Idol in 2002, Clarkson has worked with RCA Records and released six full-length albums. However, the artist would like to release more soulful music, which she feels can be best accomplished at Atlantic Records. While no songs have been released yet to tease the album, several heartfelt ballads from the award-winning singer are expected.

The eighth installment of the legendary Star Wars series and the second in the most recent trilogy will build on the cliffhanger that concluded 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” As with “The Force Awakens,” no official synopsis or plot information has been released, so we can only guess at what’s to come. Sports Editors 2017 Bold Predictions

‘I am not getting one of these right, am I?’

Taylor Schloemer Sports Editor

2017 is just around the corner, and it is time for predictions. These are my very bold and unlikely thoughts for the next 12 months.

Reign of the Bison ends

This is technically in 2017. I am predicting the Bison win against the Jacks in the quarters. Then will cruise in the semis and find themselves up against Eastern Washington

in Frisco. Cooper Kupp explodes for three touchdowns as the Bison struggle on offense. The streak does not get to six for NDSU.

a game winning field goal as Brady walks off into the sunset. The only issue is that during the celebrations, deflated balloons fall from the ceiling.

And Tom Brady retires after the game. They Manning-Brady rivalry is one of the best all-time in sports, and Brady tries to one-up Peyton. He will throw two touchdowns against the Cowboys, but Zeke and Dak keep it close. Stephen Gostkowski hits

After Detroit collapses late in the year, the Vikings win the NFC North and host a playoff game. After a close affair with the Giants, it comes down to one last field goal to try to win the game. Kai Forbath pulls a 28-yard chip shot right, and the Giants get the win. Somewhere, Blair Walsh is

for Game 5. James goes 25 points, 5 assists, 8 rebounds and stuffs Steph Curry on a fast break. But in the postgame interview, he announces that Space Jam 2 will hit theaters in November. That will be when everyone loses their minds.

It will be another Golden State-Cleveland NBA Finals. The Cavs go up 3-1 before going to Oakland

Minnesota United gets a designated player from Europe

MLS is the Designated Player tag. A DP is someone who does not count toward the salary cap of the team. So a couple of ideas for players for MNUFC. First Wayne Rooney. The Shrek body double is used to the crappy English weather and should feel at home in Minnesota. Another player at the end of their career is Iker Casillas. The former Real Madrid and current Porto man has considered a move to the States. He would be welcomed to Minnesota.
