Immigration Ban Affects Bison Community Ban prohibits travel into US from seven countries for both immigrants and nonimmigrants

Casey McCarty Head News Editor

“This ban is a direct hit on the concept of freedom,” Asif Arshid, vice president of NDSU’s Muslim Student Association and a student senator representing graduate students said. “From what I understand from my last year and a half stay in the United States, the foundation of America is freedom.” About 42 North Dakota State students, per the fall 2016 demographic report, are directly affected by an executive order issued signed into effect by President Donald Trump on Friday. The ban prohibits entry to the United States from seven countries: Iran, Iraq, Somalia, Syria, Sudan, Libya and Yemen. The order prohibits entry to “immigrants and nonimmigrants” for 90 days following the signing of the order. All of these countries are predominantly populated by people who worship the faith of Islam. Understanding the ‘Muslim ban’ Media outlets, including the New York Times, the Huffington Post and Al Jazeera have called Trump’s executive order as a “Muslim ban.” The text of the executive order does not specifically use the words “Muslim” and “Christian,” but Section 5B of the order permits the

Secretaries of State and Homeland Security “ to the extent permitted by law, to prioritize refugee claims made by individuals on the basis of religious-based persecution, provided that the religion of the individual is a minority religion in the individual’s country of nationality.” As majority populations in all seven banned countries hold Islam as their religion, the ban implicitly gives preference, critics say, to Christians and other nonMuslims to enter the U.S. Section 5D of the executive order placed a cap of 50,000 refugees in the 2017 fiscal year, and section 5C proclaimed Syrian nationals entering the U.S. “is detrimental to the interests of the United States,” and thus Syrian nationals are banned from entering the country indefinitely. Section 5E permits the the SoS and SoHS to admit individual refugees into the U.S. on a caseby-case basis, “but only so long as they determine that the admission of such individuals as refugees is in the national interest — including when the person is a religious minority in his country of nationality facing religious persecution, when admitting the person would enable the United States to conform its conduct to a preexisting international agreement, or when the person is already in transit and denying admission IMMIGRATION | PAGE 3

Asif Arshid, the vice president of NDSU’s Muslim Student Association, said the newly imposed ban is a ‘direct threat’ against Muslims. President Donald Trump enacted the order, he said, to strengthen national security.

we want to support you. We are here for you and your families,” Kauffman concluded. Neighbor schools Neighboring schools have issued similar statements as NDSU. The University of North Dakota’s International Center issued a statement via its Facebook page advising students to not travel outside of the United States, even to Canada, until the full effects of the ban are known. The center added that it will send further listserv messages as more information is known. The president of the University of Minnesota, Eric Kaler, issued a statement a similar statement to the U of M community, adding immigration and legal resources are available through the school’s International Student and Scholar Services and

through the University Student Legal Service. National Effects “Y’know, the whole world is protesting against this one, and this will affect not only American economics but also their image,” Arshid said. As of press time, Trump has fired the acting attorney general Sally Yates over the ban. “The acting Attorney General, Sally Yates, has betrayed the Department of Justice by refusing to enforce a legal order designed to protect the citizens of the United States,” a statement from the White House said. The statement added that Yates is “an Obama Administration appointee who is weak on borders and very weak on illegal immigration,” and that “it is time to get serious about protecting our country.”

The statement further said that tougher vetting for individuals traveling from the seven “dangerous places” is not extreme, but rather reasonable and necessary. Finally, the statement proclaimed Dana Boente to be the acting attorney general until Senator Jeff Sessions is approved by the Senate to become the permanent attorney general. As of press time, the states of Washington, Massachusetts and New York have filed suit against the Trump Administration, TIME reported. The report added the lawsuit asks a judge to throw out key provisions of the immigration ban. “The general public is standing with us actually. They are protecting us, They are helping us,” Arshid said.

Fargo Flicks: Fights and Franchises ‘Fist Fight’ and ‘Rings’ hit the big screen this month the two of them travel the world. Unfortunately, Garner’s body, unused to Earth’s atmosphere, is slowly dying. He and Tulsa must make the most of his time left before its too late. This highly anticipated sci-fi teen romance is sure to bring joy and tears to viewers.

February offers a wide array of movies to enjoy, ranging from terrifying to adventurous, and romantic to comical. Every type of movie fan should be able to find something they enjoy this month.

“Rings” Feb. 3

“The Space Between Us” Feb. 3

The horror franchise that began with “The Ring” returns with its third film, picking up 13 years after the events of the first two movies. The protagonist is Julia, who worries about her boyfriend Holt when he researches and explores an urban legend about a videotape said to kill the watcher seven days later. Eventually, Julia sacrifices herself to save her boyfriend and discovers a neverbefore-seen clip within the deadly video.

Garner Elliot (Asa Butterfield, “Hugo”) has lived his whole life on Mars. After his mother dies giving birth to him on the Red Planet, Garner remains a secret from those on Earth. His only connection to Earth is teenaged Tulsa (Britt Robertson, “Tomorrowland”), a fiery girl he communicates with via the computer. Finally, at 16, Garner is given the ability to travel to Earth. Garner escapes and connects with Tulsa, and

In ‘The Space Between Us,’ teenaged Garner is able to travel to Earth but this creates some challenges. The film is sure to include loads of suspense to keep the viewer on edge.

“Fifty Shades Darker” Feb. 10

Speaking of sequels, this romantic franchise returns with a second steamy movie. After the events of the first film, Christian Grey tries to persuade a careful Ana Steele back into a relationship. However, this time Ana demands

a different kind of arrangement for the two before she would even consider getting back with Christian. As the two finally begin hitting their stride as a couple, haunting people from Mr. Grey’s past threaten to destroy everything they’ve worked for. Fans of the first movie should love this one just as much, but some moviegoers

understandable have a tepid approach to the BDSMthemed film series.

“The Lego Batman Movie” Feb. 10

Legos are back on the big screen when this flick hits theaters next week. Unlike “The Lego Movie” that came out in 2014, this one focuses solely on the caped crusader as he wages war on Gotham’s vilest villain, the Joker. Several big names are in on the

Physical comedy abounds in this upcoming film starring Ice Cube, Charlie Day and Tracy Morgan as high school teachers. When Mr. Campbell (Day) accidently gets Mr. Strickland (Cube) fired, the intimidating Strickland challenges Campbell to a fight after school in the parking lot. Laughter Ensues at Latest Improv Show NDSU’s To Be Determined Comedy group gets plenty of laughs at Saturday show

REVIEW

Bruno Lozano Staff Writer

On Jan. 28, North Dakota State improv group To Be Determined hosted their second show of the semester in Askanase Auditorium. I’m not one for improv comedy, but this show was different. This show had the audience involved in many jokes, and the fact that it was current NDSU made it seem like you were watching your friends on stage. The show had a lot of scenes that varied in style, which added variety and originality to the show. The performers made the show relevant and approachable to people who are, and are not, interested in improv. The most enjoyable scene was when the actors had to create a story. The story would repeat over and over,

It was fun, original and creative. The cast, aside from students, had a cheesecake. The most talented cheesecake I have ever

seen. Anything can happen when you go to an improv show. I would highly recommend it. At times, you need imagination to

The xx Expands Their Unique Sound in Third Album ‘I See You’ offers pleasant departure from band’s usual sounds and attitude Caleb Laude

Contributing Writer

It feels like 20 years has gone by. Really, it has only been four years since English indie pop band the xx — always lowercase, folks — released an album. After “Coexist” came out in 2012, there was muttered chattering that the band could be finished. Well, on Jan. 13, the xx returned and released their third album, “I See You” worldwide. The xx stated that “I See You” was going to be “more outward-looking, open and expansive” than their previous two albums “Coexist” and “xx.” These prior albums saw the group manipulate silence and sound to create a soothing soundscape mixing minimalist pop with dreamy vocals. Those first two albums are classics, and the band’s

most importantly, fresh. Yet, still so chill. “Dangerous,” the first song on the album, features a blast of fanfare before kicking into deep bass, light percussion and vocals. This ends up being one of the best songs on the album,

along with fellow hip-hop kissed track “On Hold,” which came out as a single a couple months before “I See You” was released. The band’s sound has evolved with each new release, and so have their lyrics. “I See You” seems to tell a story of dangerous infatuation that does not last. This story assists the music in pulling the songs together to form one piece of work. “I See You” is quite a departure for the xx. The sound difference is like going from black and white to color. On the two previous albums, lone tones set against swaths of silence made each sound seem important. While the minimalism of the group’s prior work was fantastic, a broader sound with more action is an improvement. However, this means “I See You” might not always be ideal for quiet study like other selections from the

group’s catalogue. This album is 10 songs and runs 39 minutes, which is relatively short. One can have too much of a good thing, and some pop albums can be a little long when trying to sit down and listen to one all the way through. “I See You” feels like it was made to be listened to all the way through, instead of getting pulled apart and stuck into different playlists. This was made for the listener to sit down, start it up and chill out. The songs on this album fit together and flow into each other quite well, which is another difference from the xx’s prior work. “I See You” is available for streaming on iTunes/ Apple Music, Google Play, Amazon and Spotify. There is also a vinyl pressing available on the band’s website — if vinyl is your thing. Physical copies of the album have a mirror-like cover, playing on the title.

‘Split’ Actor Deserves Academy Award

M. Night Shyamalan’s film best psycho-thriller since “Silence of the Lambs”

REVIEW

Casey McCarty Spectrum Staff

Move over Casey Affleck, Andrew Garfield, Ryan Gosling, Denzel Washington and Viggo Mortenson, there should be a new contender for the Best Actor Academy Award. Yes, James McAvoy deserves the award for brilliantly portraying over 20 characters trapped within the body of Kevin in M. Night Shyamalan’s newest, and best-ever, film “Split.” This film is arguably the best psycho-thriller since “Silence of the Lambs (1991).” In fact, this film basically takes the chemistry that makes “Silence of the Lambs” such a good film, and makes it its own. The main antagonist of the film is, weirdly, the one who you seem to be cheering on throughout the entire film.

Kevin is very akin to Hannibal Lecter. That is, the antagonist of the film is the one who’s acting captivates you and really solidifies the plot and strength of the characters in the film. However, the protagonists of “Split,” were generally bland and dull in respect to acting. Casey (Anya TaylorJoy), Marcia (Jessica Sula) and Claire (Haley Lu Richardson) were generally panic-stricken victims who cried and allowed Kevin to do whatever he wanted to them as they were afraid. Casey, though, did this with intent as she has prior experiences with abuse. Kevin is main driver of the plot, however. Props to M. Night Shyamalan, as this truly was the best film he has made thus far. It was a definite improvement from “The Last Airbender.”

story will contain spoilers. Throughout the film, Kevin discusses a 24th personality he may have inside of him, one that he calls the Beast. The film alludes to Kevin’s

past history of liking to see young women dance in the nude, which leads the audience toward the beginning of the film to believe he is some form of a rapist or pedophile.

Unfortunately, the film literally turns him into a man-eating “beast” which really took away from the plot. It made a farfetched situation that seems unreal and straight out of

Hollywood. Really, the film would have been much better and spoke to the qualms of a real life situation if Kevin had turned out to be a reallife monster instead of a fictitious cannibal. Another drawback on the film was Kevin’s frequent visits to his psychiatrist, Dr. Fletcher (Betty Buckley). They added nothing to the plot besides showing Kevin is having conflicts on which persona is the most dominant one. I feel this could have been shown in ways that would be more essential to the plot, or I wish Buckley’s character would have been more involved in the plot instead of merely providing information. All in all, I give the movie a 9/10. I definitely recommend this movie to fans of psycho-thrillers.

The Devil Wears Stage Makeup 2006 movie starring Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway set to premier on Broadway Paige Johnson A&E Editor

On Jan. 26, Broadway producer Kevin McCollum announced the 2006 movie, “The Devil Wears Prada,” will be adapted into a musical. Pop legend Elton John and playwright Paul Rudnick have agreed to

begin working on the project. “The Devil Wears Prada” is based on the book by Lauren Weisberger and was adapted to the screen in 2006. Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway starred as Miranda Priestly and Andy Sachs, respectively. Sachs is an ambitious young woman determined to make a name

for herself in the highly competitive magazine industry. Sachs is hired as a personal assistant to Streep’s character, Priestly, the intimidating and demanding editor-in-chief for a fictional major fashion magazine. As Sachs navigates the world of high fashion,

deadlines and people who all want to see her fall, she begins to recognize the price of success is high. There is no set timeline as to when the musical is set to debut, only that implementation has begun. However, this editor begs one question: will Streep reprise her role as Priestly? Streep has displayed her

talent in musicals before with her roles in “Mamma Mia” and “Into the Woods.” Many would argue film adaptations of musicals are not a good judge of an actor’s talent, but Streep’s success in cinema and her experience in musicals (despite them not being on stage) makes her a viable candidate for the role. That,

and she’s already fluent in the characterization of Priestly. While this is all speculation and pure imaginative dreaming from this editor, it is needless to say “The Devil Wears Prada” could be Broadway’s next big hit, whenever it hits the stage.

Statement sleeves are heating up on the apparel front, while statement earrings are fashion’s biggest upcoming accessories trend. Standout earrings and elevated sleeves are chic and showy on their own, but it’s when they’re worn together that they make a major statement. Statement sleeves are both pretty and practical for winter, and they’re about to become an even bigger trend for spring. Style stars at the forefront of fashion have been sporting dramatic long sleeves since late last summer, and designers showed them extensively at their spring 2017 fashion shows. You’ve probably already tiptoed into the statement sleeves trend with a cold shoulder top or off-theshoulder dress. But now it’s time to take it up a notch with tiered ruffles, lowhanging bias-cut spirals and full volume flares. Bell-shaped and ruffle styles stand out from the crowd, but extra-long, impractically oversized sleeves earn the most double takes. Old-fashioned bishop sleeves that balloon out and end in a cuff are also making a surprising comeback. Cutouts and slits diverge from the cold shoulder cut, and mixed materials and embellishments add flair to any of these silhouettes. There really is no look too extravagant, especially when you let the sleeves shine by pairing the top with basic jeans. Could it really get any easier? To up the ante, add on spring’s biggest jewelry look, statement earrings. This comeback isn’t about glitzy evening danglers; it’s focused on the sculptural,

I love all kinds of music. I could be listening to George Strait one minute and a Bollywood chart topper the next, my taste in music is that eclectic — but my favorite genre has always been rock ‘n roll. I really love going to concerts and belting out the lyrics of my favorite songs, listening to the extended guitar solos, and being part of the interaction between a band and their audience is something I can’t get enough of. Unfortunately, rock bands on tour in India are virtually nonexistent, which left me in need of a rock concert fix. In my initial search the lists of regional rock festivals that had already passed me by during the past semester disheartened me. Thankfully, I eventually stumbled upon a list of college-fests in India. There it was: the perfect blend of music, destination and interaction with Indian college students — the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore’s (IIMB) Unmaad ‘17, the

annual music and arts festival. Not only has a great Hindi rock band, The Local Train, performing a free concert, but the college also had three days’ worth of fun workshops, contests and activities to participate in with students from across South India. So after a short flight the morning of Republic Day (the date the constitution of India was enacted), I found myself in Bangalore and already headed to fill my first “rock prescription” at none other than the Hard Rock Cafe. Whenever I am in a city that has a Hard Rock Cafe, I try my best to go. The countless pieces of rock memorabilia and live music draw me in every time. I also ended up having a great time watching the India vs. England cricket match with the employees and a solitary British man trying to explain the game to me. The next day was the start of Unmaad, and it did not disappoint. I watched some great solo singing performances ranging from traditional to contemporary and hit English pop songs. I witnessed a 13-year-

I even attempted a murder mystery contest, which was enjoyable even though I was horrible at it. As 5:30 p.m. crept closer and closer my anticipation steadily grew, and before I knew it I was sitting on the grass of the campus’s

outdoor amphitheater only a few feet from the railing. The concert was amazing not only because of the band, but also because of how ordinary and free it made me feel. I felt like any other college student enjoying a concert instead of studying or reading papers for class, just screaming lyrics and laughing at the band’s jokes between sets. Each night at Unmaad

there was also an “unplugged event” starting at 10 p.m. and continuing until 3 a.m. where people performed, sang karaoke and played board games. It was a great way to relax and talk to fellow students from different colleges around South India. Whether bonding over music, mutual uncertainty about our performance in exams, or the popular topic of lack of sleep, it was easy to

connect. So I challenge everyone who studies abroad to try to find excursions like this. Break away from the routine of simply traveling to see sights, and invest in some experiences. Anything from asking someone to explain an unfamiliar sport playing on TV to attending a college-fest can bring forth the most amazing experiences.

DIY Bullet Journal

An analog way to organize your increasingly digital life COLUMN

Kaitlyn Grube Staff Writer

Classes are underway. Exams are popping up left and right. There are projects everywhere and I am having trouble keeping everything straight. That’s why we use planners. But planners really only tell us what we have to do for class. In college, there are a lot of things that need to be done that have nothing to do with our classes: laundry, doctor’s appointments, work projects, sorority and fraternity meetings and more. A bullet journal is a great way to keep all aspects of life organized in a fun and colorful manner. Bullet journaling has taken off in the last few years. A lot of bloggers use bullet journals and have

tutorials on how to make one. I’m going to start off with the basics.

What is a bullet journal?

A bullet journal is the cross between a journal and a planner. You build your bullet journal yourself, so you get to decide what’s in it and what you want to see. Essentially, it’s a customized daily planner.

How does the bullet journal work?

That’s up to you. Most bullet journals start out with an index, sort of like in a book. You write down the page numbers of your notebook that correspond with certain calendars. Say your February calendar starts on page 14. You just write February-14 in the index to keep track of where everything is. The main point is that bullet journals are highly customizable. Some people

do daily meal plans at the beginning of each week to keep track of ingredients, caloric intake and what groceries they’ll be needing. Others do monthly cleaning schedules to keep track of what needs to be cleaned when. All of these ideas can be written out throughout the bullet journal with page numbers for them kept in the index. Usually there’s a monthly calendar at the beginning of each month. This is where you write dates, days of the week and any major assignments, work projects or cleaning projects that need to be done. Personally, I colorcode mine. Pink is for due dates and tests, purple is for doctor’s appointments, pencil is laundry and cleaning projects, blue is work and black is holidays or birthdays. It gives me a visual way of finding what

I’m looking for. After the monthly pages usually come the daily pages. This can be done in a variety of ways. Some people have the days split into sections on a page, one week in one spread. Others give each day their own page. This really depends on your own preferences and how much you have to do in any given day. It also depends on how much you’re going to use your journal. I use mine a lot and like to have one page per day. I keep the same color coordination across every page so that I don’t get confused. I would recommend doing the same. Using a bullet journal can be a bit confusing at first, but it really does help organize your life. There are multiple resources online to help get you started, including bulletjournal.com.

‘You’re Fired’: On Saying ‘No,’ Yes-Men and Trust Rio Bergh

So, the man currently sitting in the president’s office fired the acting U.S. attorney general for drawing the legality of his executive order into question. The White House issued a statement saying that acting U.S. Attorney General Sally Yates “betrayed the Department of Justice by refusing to enforce a legal order designed to protect the citizens of the United States.” However, it’s worth

noting Yates was attempting to fulfill the duty of her station. During the 2015 confirmation hearings for her appointment as U.S. deputy attorney general, a certain person named Jeff Sessions (sound familiar?) asked Yates what she would do if asked by the president to do something unlawful. Yates replied “I believe the attorney general or the deputy attorney general has an obligation to follow the law and the Constitution, and to give their independent legal advice to the president.” Well, she tried to do that. In a letter to her staff Yates

said, “At present, I am not convinced that the defense of the executive order is consistent with these responsibilities nor am I convinced that the executive order is lawful.” Apparently Cheeto Hitler doesn’t appreciate dissent. Three hours later, Yates got canned. I’m guessing the footage will show up on future intro reels for “The Apprentice.” I wonder if anyone had time within those three hours to think about why Yates made her statement, and if it had any truth, or maybe why the order in question met with outrage

and protests. But I guess I can understand why the scrambling search to find a yes-man would be more important. According to the statement from the White House, “Ms. Yates is an Obama administration appointee who is weak on borders and very weak on illegal immigration.” In contrast, the new acting attorney general, Dana Boente, is “honored to serve President Trump in this role until Senator Sessions is confirmed,” according to the White House. Frankly, I don’t see how being an Obama

administration appointee has any bearing on Yates’s ability to fill the position. I also find it disconcerting that the main consideration for filling the office doesn’t seem to be related to having any moral scruples, but is instead based on being “weak” or “very weak” on issues of immigration, and on being willing to “serve President Trump.” Furthermore, the White House statement claimed “calling for tougher vetting for individuals travelling from seven dangerous places is not extreme.” Even if we were to cede that point without argument, “calling

for tougher vetting” and placing an indefinite travel ban are not the same things. I hope Mr. Boente is practicing his sincere smile for when he gets to stand behind the president for canned photos of freshly signed documents. I also hope he reads the last section of the inscription on the Statue of Liberty: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Gotta Go: The Plastic Water Prison There must be a more environmentally responsible method of drinking water There’s no excuse for not taking care of our environment at this point, so I would like to point out one offender in particular: bottled water.

Grant Gloe Staff Writer

We’ve all heard the statements. “Plastic is killing the environment.” “ Fish are choking on sixpack rings.” “The ocean is 80 percent plastic.” There’s no excuse for not taking care of our environment at this point, so I would like to point out one offender in particular: bottled water. We all drink out of them, but it’s filling our landfills

and sinking our waters. What are we supposed to do, though? We need water to live, right? I propose an alternative: some sort of system that delivers water to people without using plastic bottles. Maybe some sort of underground web of ... I’m not sure. Metal tubes of some kind? Can we do that? Maybe some places will have problems keeping them up and running (*cough* Flint, Michigan *cough*) but I feel like it’s doable. Wait, but then people need to drink the water. Hmm. Maybe, we can just stick our mouths over the pipes

and — no that would look silly. Some sort of IV system perhaps? No, that would need a registered nurse. Well, we could use some unorthodox method like a, say, a glass tube covered at one end to hold the water. Ya, maybe even a bottle that can be used over and over rather than just thrown out? I’ll get science on the phone and see what I can do. Now I know what you’re thinking: Grant, what about all the great workers whose jobs rely on garbage? Would you make them starve? Would you make it so their families can’t afford

bottles to throw away so that they can afford bottles? Well, we may not need as many of those guys, but they can work on making the new bottles and drinking tubes I bet. We also need people to lay the ground tubes and fix them in areas they aren’t working *cough cough* Flint, Michigan *cough.* So ya see? There’s really no reason we need to be drinking out of these wasteful water bottles. Humans can do some pretty cool stuff from time to time; I think we can manage to make our water consumption habits a little more environmentally friendly, brochachos.

Trump’s America: Build that Wall A critique of President Trump’s first week in office

Erik Jonasson II Opinions Editor

On Wednesday, Donald Trump signed executive orders to start building The Wall. Forget how much money in taxes this will call for. Forget the amount of tax dollars it will cost you. Forget the people who never asked for it. Forget Flint. Forget all of the things that our money needs to be spent on. Rest assured, Mexico will pay. This is a fact that our

president makes sure to tell all Americans. Mexico will pay. In a strange turn of events, Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto disputed what Trump said. “I regret and condemn the decision of the United States to continue construction of a wall that, for years, has divided us instead of uniting us Mexico does not believe in walls,” Nieto said. “I have said it time and again: Mexico will not pay for any wall.” Forget that statement. Forget it all and focus on one thing. Trump is going to build the wall. We have stopped funding to a clinic, Planned Parenthood, that helps women by supplying, birth control, helpful reproduction education

Make America Great Again? and cancer screenings. We have done this because that certain clinic also offers abortions. This is going to affect millions of women negatively. Trump is going to build the wall. As of right now, we have an administration that is offering “alternative facts.”

GAGE SKIDMORE | PHOTO COURTESY

We live in a time now where science is okay to question and neglect. Forget facts, forget the overall governing purpose of science. These facts we observe through science, they are up for debate and discussion according to our new president. Global warming, remember, is

just a façade invented by the Chinese. We might kill the planet and force out progress to green technologies. But … … Trump is going to build the wall. As of Jan. 27, 2017, President Trump signed orders to ban Syrian refugees from coming into our nation. An order that seems to defy the very American ideal. “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me: I lift my lamp beside the golden door.” This quote comes from Emma Lazarus, it is known as the quote on the Statue of

Liberty. Instead, now we live in a nation of fear. In a nation overrun by hatred. A nation where we are unable to take responsibility for the issues within our own borders and would rather point a finger towards a brown person instead. A nation where racists are out in the open. Trump is going to build the wall. I can see nothing but hatred. I can see nothing but racism. I can see nothing other than people ignorant to scientific facts. People who have been fooled. People who have been told for far too long that it was someone else’s fault. So maybe, this is why they thought America needed to be made great again.

Science is Not a Topic for Debate Science is true for everyone

Erik Jonasson II Opinions Editor

Today we live in a world that is governed by the exact same science that it has always had. For instance, gravity still works. The scale that you step on is still registering your weight. I am feeling the added mass of a few too many cookies and potato chips, personally. Rest

assured, though, this scale is still working on its principles. Weight equals mass multiplied by the acceleration due to the fact gravity works rain or shine. Similarly, the climate is still the same. For decades now, we have known there is something not normal. There is something wrong with the balance of CO2 (carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas) in our atmosphere. This is something a vast majority of scientists, climatologists and big-brained people who get paid to know what they are talking about have confirmed. This isn’t really up for debate. Humans are causing warming on the globe at an

alarming rate. Where it became acceptable to argue facts, I don’t know. It is hard to me to fathom it. It would be like going to the doctor with a headache and stomach ache. After the doctor had seen you, they would tell you what you have. A bad case of midsemesteritis, the worst they’d seen all week. You, being firm in your beliefs, would promptly say, “Well, I don’t really agree with that diagnosis.” You would continue to say, “I have found another ‘doctor’ who tells me I am actually fine. I am going to do what they say.” This is what climate change deniers are essentially doing. They

aren’t fixing the problem. They are ignoring it. This is quite possibly the worst course of action as well. We are at a crossroads. Environmentally friendly options exist. We have electric cars, solar power and a ton of other green technologies just waiting to be developed. For someone in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) field it is truly an exciting prospect. We have so much to create for tomorrow. Think about flying cars, perhaps driven by alternative fuels, maybe it would use an electric motor? What about continued work on batteries? This is a

crucial ingredient to power tomorrow. Where these dreams cease to be a reality is in the world where we deny climate change. If you deny climate change, you are ignoring science. You are ignoring common sense. Don’t be fooled by people trying to debate scientific facts. They have no merit. They have no argument that will make something that is science go away. It is like yelling at the scale because you gained five pounds. You can’t debate weight away, but you can go to the gym, you can eat better. These are the options you have. This continued attack on facts based in science is

nothing short of nightmare fuel. It is a way to divide us. It is a way for people who profit on the fossil fuel industry to trick us. Trust me, these tactics don’t just fool people who go to colleges like the University of North Dakota (Go Bison). They affect people here on campus. They affect our friends and family. This saddens me because we need everyone. This is a global effort that needs all the smart people it can get. No matter where you are from, or your beliefs, we need you on our team. In order to make a better tomorrow, we need you. This is scientific fact.

Grant’s Dining Center Hijinks Because haven’t you ever wanted something from the dining center?

SATIRE

Grant Gloe Staff Writer

This week I’m going to share a story from my freshmen year. It involves crime, deceit and dining center equipment so strap in kiddos. Back in the days of 2015, when Leo was still missing an Oscar and a significant number of celebrities were significantly less dead, we were dreamers. We imagined what it would be like in our own apartment next year. No more dorm life for us. We’d have an oven in our kitchen rather than our basement. We’d have beds we could climb in without first climbing on our desks. Not like that — I mean not that there’s anything wrong with — moving on. Only one thing remained out of grasp. No, it’s not the stars — not that we were grasping the — goddamn it’s a centerpiece. I was alluding to a centerpiece. Now the napkin dispensers at the dining center tantalized us. It was our forbidden fruit, except it was less of a fruit and more of a napkin dispenser. We wanted it, oh man, did we want it.

One evening, after finishing a meal I’m sure was too greasy to eat or not greasy enough to make it edible, I returned my dishes to, you guessed it, the dish return. My friends were eager to leave, so I put on my backpack to find it wasn’t my backpack. Well, I took off the strange pack, feeling I had enough strange sacks in my life, and found that it was indeed my pack; it just didn’t feel like my pack. Well, my backpack is allowed to feel like any orientation, gender or ethnicity in however fluid a matter it feels comfortable, but this called for further inspection. I unzipped to find the third most beautiful thing that can be found in the dining center. The napkin dispenser falls just short of chicken drummies and my white buns. I looked at my friends to see if this was their doing but noticed a dining center employee about eight feet to my left. She definitely noticed, and her expression sighed, “I really don’t want to do this today.” So I did the only reasonable thing: I zipped the napkin dispenser back into my pack and said, “Alright, let’s go!” I then chuckled and put it back. She was not chuckling. If there is an opposite of chuckling, she was doing that. I tell you if looks could kill.

It was our forbidden fruit, except it was less of a fruit and more of a napkin dispenser. We wanted it, oh man, did we want it.

We craved a napkin holder but wanted it green with NDSU on the side. So you may be asking yourself, “That ... was pretty lackluster. What was the point of this article? Did you really just write an article to compliment your ‘white buns’?” Don’t be silly, I don’t need

an article for that. They speak for themselves. No, this is a call to action, an opportunity for adventure, a challenge. Do you want to make the most of your college experience? Making away

with something may be a good way to do it. You could, I don’t know, never pay for fruit or lunchmeat because you get it from the dining center (just an example). Maybe you have greater ambitions.

COMRADE KING | PHOTO COURTESY

Those giant plants in West Dining Center would be pretty sweet if you could get away with it. I’m not saying do it or don’t do it, just make sure to have some fun. Follow your stars, shoot for the heart, etc., etc.

The Spectrum’s Super Bowl Predictions New England, Atlanta square off in Houston Sunday

WIKIPEDIA.ORG | PHOTO COURTESY

Spectrum Staff Taylor Schloemer — Sports Editor Patriots 34, Falcons 31

These two teams are even in terms of skill in my eyes, so this comes down to who do I respect more. For me, the easiest way to earn respect is by continued excellence. I respect the San Antonio Spurs more than I do the Golden State Warriors. It is what drew me to support Manchester United. Therefore, I am taking the villains here. Both Matt Ryan and Tom Brady will air it out, but Atlanta’s ground game will provide fits for the Patriot’s defense. Expect Julio Jones to be shut down by the Pats, who will in turn lock down former lacrosse player Chris Hogan. Look for Brady to turn to Martellus Bennet, the best TE2 in the league, and perhaps more valuable than Gronk. At the end of the day though, Brady will be the difference. And Stephen Gostkowski is a good kicker, and he will drill the game winner as time expired. Yes, I am reusing a narrative.

Thomas Evanella — Sports Staff Writer Falcons 34, Patriots 31 Statistically, the Patriots

look to have a slight edge over the Falcons in the Super Bowl. While the Falcons will enter the big game with an elite offense, they will face a defense the likes of which they have not faced this year. The Patriots defense is a criminally underrated unit, allowing a minuscule 15.4 points per game. However, they have never faced an offense as prolific as the Falcons’. Led by MVP frontrunner Matt Ryan at QB, Atlanta is well equipped for the Patriots. Julio Jones, arguably the top wide receiver in the NFL, may get the attention, but Atlanta’s offense is deep and loaded with weapons. Taylor Gabriel provides Ryan with a speedy option at receiver, and could turn out to be a major x-factor. Additionally, Atlanta’s run game does not get enough credit. Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman combined for 1,599 yards and 19 touchdowns. On defense, pass rushing Vic Beasley will look to terrorize the unflappable Tom Brady. Beasley recorded 15.5 sacks on the season, and is the headliner on a unit that is capable of causing headaches for opponents. Need proof? Just ask Aaron Rodgers. With so many weapons, an MVP QB, and a swarming defense, the Falcons will

come out on top in Super Bowl LI.

Connor Dunn — Spectrum Staff/ Sports Columnist Patriots 31, Falcons 23

The number one scoring defense versus the number one scoring offense, one team must succumb to the other’s strength. Last time I checked, the Super Bowl is the championship of the NFL and I still believe in the mantra of almost every high school coach in America. Defense wins championships. Experience also helps too, and the New England Patriots have the NFL’s leading defense, the infamous Tom Brady, and the cut-off sweatshirt king Bill Belichick. Yes, Matt Ryan has had an MVP-worthy season along with a dangerous weapon in Julio Jones, but the league’s best wide receiver Antonio Brown was schemed out in the AFC Championship game. Look for coordinator Matt Patricia to dial up his dynamic defense again in route to Roger Goodell’s semi-awkward Lombardi Trophy presentation to Brady and the New England Patriots.

Cody Tusler — Sports Staff Writer Falcons 41, Patriots 31

Falcons have arguably the best offense this year and this year’s MVP is Matt Ryan. The offense has

played great all year with 58 total touchdowns. Ryan has had a career year with 4,944 yards, 38 touchdowns, to 13 different targets, seven interceptions, completing 69.9 percent of his passes and a rating of 117.1, all career highs. With the run game, Atlanta has arguably the best one-two punch in Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman. Freeman totaled for 13 TD’s, 11 rushing and 2 receiving, and Coleman added 11 scores, 8 rushing and 3 receiving. I don’t know how anyone can go against that offense, but they don’t have a half bad defense either. Vic Beasley Jr. led the league in sacks in just his second year in the league with 15.5. He can line up as a defensive end or and outside linebacker. Falcons have good mix of veteran and younger players. At the end of the day, it will be a tough game and both teams are great on both sides of the ball. Falcons are going to be winners at the end of the day.

Ben Grundhauser — Sports Contributing Writer Patriots 38, Falcons 31 This should be one of the most exciting super bowls in recent memory. The Patriots have the number one defense in the playoffs and the Falcons have the number one

offense. Something must give and the way I see it, Bill Belichick and Tom Brady are the best duo out there when it comes to the playoffs and I see them raising a historic fifth super bowl. The game will be high scoring, maybe even the highest scoring ever, but that won’t help the Falcons in this game. Although I hate to admit it, Brady is one of the greatest quarterbacks this game has ever seen and he is going to find a way to pull this one out for the Pats.

Casey McCarty — News Editor Patriots 42, Falcons 36

The New England Patriots will win 42-36 over the Atlanta Falcons. Both of these teams have very high caliber offenses, so really this game will come down to which team’s defense will show up. Frankly, I believe the Patriots to have a better defense overall, one capable of slowing down the lethal offense of Matt Ryan. Besides, who gives a Falc if its Brady and Belichick’s seventh Super Bowl, and who cares that some people (me) got really upset a few years ago when the Pats intercepted the Seahawks in the end zone from the one yard line to win the game. If anything, I want Brady to win this game so he’ll

pull a Peyton Manning and retire after this year and spend the rest of his days making awkward Papa John’s commercials.

Erik Jonasson — Opinion Editor Patriots 21, Falcons 21

I know there are a lot of questions out there concerning the most recent Super Bowl to be played this Sunday. Let me answer some of those here. The game of football is all about inches. It is also about points. The team that scores (and scores slightly more than the other team) will win this game. I like looking at the game play of Tom Brady this year. He has scored more points than the other team at least 14 times. He has the formula down. Now Matt Ryan, he is also good at that. That Julio Jones guy is pretty good at scoring point here too. I know through the regular season this means stuff, but this is the post season. Prediction: Tom Brady will throw for at least 400 yards with maybe 3 TD to 1 INT. Julio Jones surprises with 235 yards and 2 TD. Rodger Goodell runs for 200 yards and 17 fines. Final score: 21-21, Patriots will win by cheating in the tiebreaker.

A Rivalry Renewed, New Trophy Needed

With UND joining the Valley, the big game needs a trophy

Taylor Schloemer Sports Editor

With the University of North Dakota leaving the Big Sky to join the rest of the Dakota schools in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, the NDSUUND rivalry is set to resume. It will be a while before UND will join the Valley (officially in 2020) but they are on the Bison schedule in 2019, in a nonconference game. Naturally, rivalries need a trophy in college football.

With the Nickel Trophy not making a comeback soon, it is time to look for something new.

1. The Nickel Trophy

Or is it time to look for something new? Bringing back the nickel will mean there will be no need to create history for the prize. It represents the whole of the NDSU-UND rivalry. The only reason it won’t be coming back is because of the “heads” side of the coin. But what if the Sioux head was replaced by a hawk? A little modification, and there is the new trophy.

2. Red River Rumble

The Red River is an iconic symbol of North Dakota. It connects the two cities of the schools, and could make for an interesting design. Think a sterling silver trophy that squiggles in the way as the river looks from above. This would be a more modern take on a trophy, but it might be able to start something historic.

3. The Green Jug

Finding the inspiration for this one is easy. That lil’ brown jug that Minnesota and Michigan play for is what this one is going for.

One side has NDSU green and a Bison face, the other UND green with a hawk. It might be just a bit too similar to the lil’ brown jug though.

4. Wood Chipper

The likely favorite of the Coen Brothers. Based off the movie “Fargo,” it will feature a half scale wood chipper on a wood base with a golden plaque. This will encompass the grind of a football game quite well and maybe the chippiness that could spark between these two teams.

5. The Governor’s Cup

There is no bias here, but how about we let Doug Burgum design a cup. He is the governor of this great state after all. Besides, this will likely become the single biggest event between North Dakota schools. Is there a more meaningful event in North Dakota? Somewhere between Lord Stanley’s Cup and the Ryder Cup please, Mr. Burgum.

6. The Potato or Pancake Bowl Did you know that the largest French fry feed in the world takes place at

Potato Bowl USA in Grand Forks? Did you know the world’s largest pancake feed was hosted in Fargo? It is stuff like this that makes for a great obscure college football trophy. Makes as much sense as Floyd of Rosedale. Since the Hawks won’t join the Valley until 2020 that means the 2019 game doesn’t have much in terms of meaning. So, let’s add to that. Winner gets to design the trophy and be the first holders of it. Sounds fair enough. Let the best team win.

UND to Switch Conferences, Join NDSU Swap from Big Sky reunites the Dakota Schools Cody Tusler Staff Writer

The rivalry between North Dakota State and University of North Dakota just got more interesting. UND will officially join the Summit League Conference in 20182019 for all sports other than football. The Summit League does not sponsor football, therefore, UND will officially switch to the Missouri Valley Football Conference in 2020. All four football-playing members of the Summit League compete in the MVFC. “This is a big, big day for UND athletics,” UND

athletic director Brian Faison said last week. “There’s no question for us that these leagues are a great fit both geographically and competitively. It brings rivalries back, and more importantly, in a conference setting.” The move to the MVFC and Summit was made to help control travel costs with the Big Sky, a three timezone league that expands from North Dakota to California and Washington. Most importantly, it brings back UND athletics with its regional rivals- NDSU, South Dakota and South Dakota State, as they were back in their Division II

days. They split up in 2004, when NDSU and SDSU moved up to Division I and UND and USD stayed in Division II. “I think part of the experience in growing up in Wishek or Bismarck or Fargo or the Twin Cities is that when they come to North Dakota, their experience should include playing North Dakota State, South Dakota State and South Dakota,” football coach Bob Schweigert said of future UND players. UND made the switch to Division I athletics in 2008, becoming a full-time member of the Big Sky Conference in 2012.

UND will make the move to the Summit League and Missouri Valley, joining NDSU

With UND football continuing to play in the Big Sky Conference through the 2019 season, they won’t be considered a full member and be unable to win the Big Sky regular season title. They can however, still can reach the FCS playoffs with an at-large bid. “It was mentioned earlier that the conference alignment helps us from the expenses perspective,” UND President Tom Kennedy said. “There’s no doubt the university, depending on what the legislature does in the months ahead, will face tough decisions going forward. We have nothing to say on that now, other than

we do face some continuing budget situations.” Kennedy thanked NDSU President Dean Bresciani for his support through the process. “(Bresciani) was very supportive and that support was very important,” Kennedy said. Emails obtained by the Grand Forks Herald through openrecords request showed the NDSU president’s support of the switch. UNDS’s administration was very grateful to the Big Sky. “The Big Sky Presidents’ Council supports the University of North Dakota’s self-assessment of its place in Division I athletics and understands its decision to find a better geographic footprint and natural rivalries,” the statement said. “The Big Sky Conference, in conjunction with North

Dakota, the Missouri Valley Football Conference and the Summit League worked together to create a solution that would help UND find better-aligned regional competition, while also tightening the Big Sky’s membership footprint,” read a Big Sky statement. MVFC commissioner Patty Viverito said her league membership was happy with 10 teams, but the conversation changed when UND was brought up. “When you look at the North Dakota football program, they’re a great fit competitively and geographically,” she said. “We want to be nationally competitive and they fit that bill.” It will be great to see UND back in the same conference as NDSU, USD and SDSU to continue the rivalries and to make history.
