NYT Leaks Trump’s Gender Definition NDSU Pride Alliance leaders speak on the partially released memo Ryan Nix

Co-News Editor

In a memo obtained by the New York Times, the Trump administration is considering changing the definition of gender and sex to center on a person’s biological sex at birth under Title IX, the federal civil rights law that bans gender discrimination in any education program that receives federal financial assistance. In the memo released, the Department of Health and Human Services proposed government agencies to determine gender based “on a biological basis that is clear, grounded in science, objective and administrable.” According to the New York Times, the federal agency under President Donald Trump wants gender to be defined as either male or female and that any dispute over a person’s gender would be handled with genetic testing. These proposed guidelines could dismantle

Obama-era civil rights protections for people that don’t fit binary gender categories. The New York Times article sparked protests on the ground and online, with #WontBeErased trending on Twitter. This is the second move by the current administration to limit the rights of

Alliance, said, “Now that we have someone in office that’s so against it or even hints that he’s against it by pushing for all these laws, that people who didn’t think they could speak before, I feel are coming out, and I feel like they’re blatantly showing their distaste for the community.”

Zach Tarble, president of the North Dakota State Pride Alliance, said Trump is “clearly not” representing trans people. “I don’t think any of us were expecting (Donald Trump) to be a good guy.” When it comes to public opinion, Krista Paulus, vice president of the NDSU Pride

The Spectrum wants to hear from our readers on the importance of voting. To do so, The Spectrum is offering an essay contest on the importance of voting. On Tuesday, November 6, America will go to the polls. The 2018 Midterm Elections offer up a chance to change the political landscape of the country. Voter turnout, however, in the midterm elections tend to be lower than presidential elections. In fact, the 2014 midterms had the lowest voter turnout, at 33.9 percent, since 1942. Voting is important, and we at The

Spectrum want you all to go out and vote on November 6. Every single news outlet will run a story along those lines within the next two weeks. But we don’t want to hear it from them, we want to hear it from you. Details of the contest Responses will be included in an article on November 5, the day before midterm voting. The prompt is as follows: “Why is it important to vote, and what does that mean to you?” Like all good contests, there will be prizes. The top-three writers will get their choice of bobbleheads made by FOCO.

Responses should be directed to editor@ndsuspectrum.com up until November 2. Winners will be selected and the top three will be allowed their choice of bobbleheads. NDSU is an amazing place for so many reasons, we have the best students, the best football team and for our state and country, we need the best voters. David Owen Fights for Measure 3 The chairman of Legalize ND shares why he supports the bill Miranda Stambler Features Editor

David Owen, originally from Ashton, Maryland, has lived in North Dakota for six years. Throughout those six years, he has been a part of advocating for marijuana legalization for four of them, starting with him sponsoring the original recreational bill in 2016 to now being the founder and chairman of Legalize ND since December 2017. Measure 3 is on the ballot for the midterm election on Nov. 6. The measure affects the legalization of marijuana. Through this legalization, it would prohibit any prosecution against someone over the age of 21 if it is nonviolent possession. Miranda Stambler (MS): Why is Measure 3 so important to you? David Owen (DO): I’m 25, and I know a lot of

people. When I was growing up, one guy, a friend of mine, wanted to join the military – didn’t come from a very wealthy family, worked hard, got through school, wanted to join the Army. He was at a party one night; it got busted, and it was argued that there was marijuana possession at the party. I believe he got charged with paraphernalia because I think he had a pipe at the time. I don’t know the exact specifics, (but) he can’t join the Army. He can’t go to school for college, no one will give him a student loan, he can’t better himself, he’s stuck working a crappy 9-to5 job last time I talked to him and he’s just stuck because of either petty possession or possession of paraphernalia. That story’s not unique. There are hundreds of kids at (University of North Dakota) alone whose lives are completely ruined by a marijuana possession charge. I know another person;

he’s in his 30s now; he’s a firefighter, so he goes out and fights the wildfires in the western part of North Dakota. He has been, basically, denied promotion numerous times due to his marijuana record. For the longest time, when him and his wife were married, they couldn’t live in the same apartment because he was not allowed to be a co-signer, but he was (also) not allowed to be on the lease and she was not allowed to have him in the apartment because of the possession misdemeanor of less than a gram of marijuana. This destroys your entire life. For something that is, again, safer than alcohol, and let’s compare a DUI charge. You can still get an apartment, still get a job, in many cases you can still get student loans, you can better yourself, and a DUI — you could kill somebody — and this really bothers me.

David Owen Fights for Measure 3 The chairman of Legalize ND shares why he supports the bill

STORY CONTINUED FROM COVER

Miranda Stambler Features Editor

MS: Why do you think you and others support it? DO: This is not a vote on whether or not you support personal use of marijuana. The question is, do you support the government having the right to lock up people and utterly destroy their lives for a substance that is safer than alcohol? People support this because it bends the failed policies of prohibition, which lock up thousands of people and give them an economic death sentence, because it allows them to get their medicine on Dec. 6 when it goes into effect, rather than them being indefinitely delayed by the legislature, and because it’s good for the economy and it’s good for farmers. MS: What’s your history with marijuana?

DO: I don’t use the product because I don’t want to go to prison. I don’t use the product.

“From the day you get the charge (of marijuana possession) to the day you die, it sticks with you and it destroys your life” - David Owen I’ve never used the product, and, honestly, after it’s legal, I probably won’t use the product. I don’t intend to. MS: What was the writing process of Measure 3 like? DO: Measure 3 starts out after

the 2016 failure of recreational (marijuana) to make the ballot. We spend about six months drafting, we ship it out to attorneys across the country, that we knew were sympathetic, get them to review it, fix some things they said were problems, next the Secretary of State by December and then finally get approved for circulation on the 15th. So we spent nine months drafting the bill. MS: What do you think made you qualified for drafting the bill? DO: In all honesty, we set the goals and then we talk to the attorneys, and the attorneys confirmed that the bill was well written and that it accomplished the goals. Our qualifications in terms of writing it, we were concerned North Dakotans who wanted marijuana to be legalized, and we didn’t want what happened to medical (marijuana) to happen

again. We also wanted to include sealing of records, and that’s when we kind of shipped it out to the

“Marijuana is not a red or blue issue. Marijuana is an individual freedom issue. It’s a personal liberties issue – I think this bill and this election will prove that” - David Owen attorneys to have them look it over, have them fix it, give their input and that’s how it got to the state it was in.

MS: What do you say to people who say the measure is too vague and poorly drafted? DO: The people who say that it’s vague are really saying that they don’t want to treat the ballot incentive process how it’s supposed to work because the single largest complaint about medical marijuana (measure) was it was too hyper specific, it did not give the legislators the ability to work with and modify the bill for the long term health of North Dakota and long term health of the bill. MS: How do you think Canada’s legalization will affect Measure 3 in North Dakota? DO: I think what people are seeing is the sky is not falling, there’s no disasters, crime is not skyrocketing and if you go to Canada this week, there will be very little difference than if you went to Canada three weeks ago.

Fake religion

The Museum of the Bible recently removed five artifacts from their lineup of religious material due to indicators that they were inauthentic. According to the Washington Post, the items removed were thought to be historical Dead Sea Scrolls, however, after close inspection they were found to be inauthentic. The museum has apologized for the incident, saying that it was irresponsible of them to put out unverified artifacts. The donor of the artifacts purchased them in 2009, and though he will

not reveal how much he paid, the museum curator estimates that he probably spent anywhere between $500,000 and $1 million.

Singing snow

Scientists have recently discovered the “song” of the Ross Ice Shelf, an ice shelf in Antarctica. The low hum of the ice shelf has been described as “eerie” by the Washington Post, and it may indicate the negative consequences of prolonged human actions. Scientists are now stating that the low hum happens when the snow melts into the top of the ice shelf, which may be an indicator of bad news to come, as glaciers move into the oceans. This could be an indicator that the global temperature is rising, with

the Washington Post stating, “This is, to put it mildly, a lousy warning system for the end of the world as we know it.”

Troops to stop caravan

President Donald Trump has started to claim that he will send military troops to the U.S.-Mexico border in an effort to halt the caravan of migrants. The caravan numbers have only increased since it began moving north from Honduras, reaching almost 7,000 people total. The people are fleeing their home countries due to violence. In an interview with USA Today, President Trump stated that he believes that there are people from the Middle East as part of the caravan, fearing that if the

Arms control

President Trump recently decided to pull the U.S. out of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty with Russia, formerly the Soviet Union during the time of ratification. He justified this choice by stating that Russia had violated the treaty many times, and he questioned former President Barack Obama’s decision to not negotiate or pull out of the agreement earlier. Obama chose not to because of pressure from other European countries, with the concern being that pulling out of the agreement would restart the arms race, as reported by the BBC.

That threat persists today and is the fear of many critics of President Trump’s choice to pull out of the agreement.

Tariffs hurt ND

According to North Dakota State professor of agricultural economics William Wilson, the trade war initiated by the Trump Administration stands to hurt North Dakota and its economy for years to come. This is due to Brazil picking up the soybean demand that used to come from the U.S. A bushel of soybeans from Brazil was previously worth 40 cents or less. Today, it has grown to $2.80 per bushel, according to Wilson. Since the tariffs take China out of the trade equation for the U.S., it also takes out the high demand

for soybeans, which is bad news for North Dakota farmers.

Headless chicken monster

A form of sea cucumber was recently located in the deep seas near East Antarctica, according to npr. org. The creature, which is known scientifically as Enypniastes eximia, but colloquially as the “Headless Chicken of the Deep Sea,” has been described as not really doing that much. It mostly just sucks on the sea floor in search of food. It is thought of as unique because it can swim, which is unusual for a sea cucumber. This is because it has fins, unlike other sea cucumbers.

Adopting Penguin, Diva and Vixen Homeward Animal Shelter has a deal on adoption fees until Nov. 1 Miranda Stambler Features Editor

It’s easy to simply see a cute animal online and think, “I like that one,” but when you actually meet them you get to see their personality and what they are truly like. Homeward Animal Shelter has many cats and dogs that you can meet to see which fits your personality type. Meet Penguin, a deaf 8-month-old Border Collie mix. On Friday, Oct. 19, she was brought to Homeward Animal Shelter from A Cause 4 Paws in Devils Lake, North Dakota. Like puppies and many Border Collies, she is energetic and excited to run around whenever she gets the chance and gets sad whenever she has to go back inside. When running around, she pauses for a couple seconds until she hops in the air and pounces on the ground. She is friendly and looking for an active family that will help give her a job and get her energy out. She needs all the tummy rubs she can get and will automatically jump up to say hello and show her affection. From now until Nov. 1, there is a special for adopting dogs, where you get $100 off the adoption fees. This is for the next 25 dogs that come into their care during the month of October. Their fur is a dark gray with some random orange splashes, which gives them character. Vixen has more orange on her face than Diva. They just need their forever home so they can warm up even quicker. Up until Nov. 1, there are specials for kittens where they are only $80 for an adoption fee. Avenida Corrientes The Argentinian Broadway brings more than just a tourist spot Paige Hall

Contributing Writer Avenida Corrientes in Buenos Aires can be described as the Argentinian Broadway. Along this street you can find famous pizza shops and cafes as well as theatre productions, movie cinemas, high-class hotels and so much more, all of which lead up to the famous obelisk. The obelisk was built in 1936 to acknowledge the 400th anniversary of the first founding of the city. The memorial has inscriptions on all four sides relating to the first and second foundations, the president at the time of construction and important political decisions. From the obelisk, almost all subway lines have a stop. It is the most popular tourist location in the entire city and is used for several events throughout the years. Recently, the opening ceremony of the 2018 Junior Olympics were held in the center of the city at the obelisk. A trapeze artist walked down the side of the building carrying the Argentinian flag, and beautiful lights from fireworks lit up the sky around the memorial. Every Christmas night the obelisk is decorated with lights and lit up as if it were a tree to the point where it has a star at the top. In the past, it has also been painted to celebrate foreign relations with Germany and represent works of famous artists. Places to visit while walking along Avenida Corrientes include:

Pizza shops

Los Inmortales Pizzeria started off as a coffee shop and later became a pizza place in honor of the original Italian founders. It has a central location in Corrientes and maintains the Italian style from 1952. Guerrin Pizzeria was founded in 1932 and serves Argentinian-style pizza along with their famous empanadas. The atmosphere is relaxed, making it a great place to eat with friends on a night out.

Cafés

Café la Paz was founded in the 1940s. It was originally for teenagers and novelists to have a place to come together and combine their musical,

movie and literary talents. In the 1960s, it became a meeting place to discuss and confront polemic ideas. For a short while, it became a bar and has now returned to a café for anyone to sip some coffee in a historical place. La Giralda Cafeteria opened in 1930 and is famous for its Spanish-style hot chocolate and churros. This place is perfect for anyone who doesn’t enjoy coffee. El Gato Negro, or in English, the Black Cat, is one of the oldest cafés in Buenos Aires and opened in 1927. The food is not very good, but the coffee is amazing. The black cat is a major theme throughout the decor of the café, so keep your eyes open for them while enjoying teatime.

Paseo la Plaza

This plaza area is filled with amazing restaurants, cafés and movie theaters. It won the attention of investors and customers in the 1980s and is owned by The Plaza Group, which is a big theater company. It has an entrance off Corrientes, filling the entire 1600 address block area, like a mall.

Bookstores

Every other shop along this famous avenue is a bookstore with anything you can imagine. From books like the “Mafalda” comics to Stephen King and Borges, a famous Argentinian author, it is book heaven for those endless readers. Hernández Librería and Liberarte are to name a few known authors. Avenida Corrientes also connects to Florida Street, which is a major outlet shopping center with a market in the middle and stores on the outside. There are Cines, which are movie theaters and tourist shops. The Broadway theater for plays and musicals also sits along Corrientes, and on the sidewalk, there are stars with names of Argentine actors and actresses, mimicking the Hollywood Walk of Fame. With so much to do and see, making PAIGE HALL | THE SPECTRUM a trip to Avenida Corrientes while in Avenida Corrientes has a tourist spot of the obelisk that they dress up for special occasions. Buenos Aires is not a waste of time.

Where Are They Now?

Artists who have left us hanging with yet-to-be released albums

Vampire Weekend has been teasing a new album for over a year now.

Brittany Hofmann Staff Writer

How many times have we heard, “New album coming soon,” from artists, but nothing to back it up? Too many, that’s what I say. Band after band after band tease their upcoming releases, but fail to deliver on the “soon” part. Taking their time to create a masterpiece isn’t a bad thing, just please don’t leave us hanging. I don’t want some indie pop group to leave me feeling “ghosted.” Despite the frustration of waiting, I’ll wait forever (well, maybe not forever) to hear new music from a beloved band. Here are a few artists that seem to have taken a hiatus despite saying a new album is coming soon.

Vampire Weekend

After the 2013 release of “Modern Vampires of the City (MVOTC),” the band went on a lengthy tour of the record and started teasing a new album in the making around 2017. On Instagram, frontman Ezra Koenig made a post giving a timeline of what the band had been up to since the release of “MVOTC,” saying they took time for a mental health year after pushing themselves with putting

out three albums. In the same post, Koenig teased the title for the fourth LP, “Mitsubishi Macchiato,” saying that it will be “a little more springtime than the last one.” Having been known for their East Coast prep style, “springtime” seems like the best descriptor, especially since “MVOTC” fell toward the other end of the spectrum with a winter-like heaviness. My best guess is that we’ll see this springy record in the spring of 2019.

too quirky with their lack of any rhythm and gibberish lyrics. Not only has West teased his own work, but he also recently tweeted “throne2 coming soon.” West collaborated with Jay-Z to create one of the greatest rap albums of our time, “Watch the Throne,” which was released back in 2011. If this sequel was seven years in the making, I’m sure it is going to be a masterpiece. Unfortunately, there has been no official release date for a “Watch the Throne” follow-up.

Kanye West has been hinting at a new album for a while and has already failed to be reliable on the release date. With a date set for his upcoming album “YANDHI” just on the horizon, I have my doubts if we’ll actually be listening to it on Nov. 23, especially since it was supposed to be released in September. West teased the album “artwork,” which is reminiscent of his sixth studio album “Yeezus” with its absence of any actual art save for a holographic disc. If “YANDHI” is anything like “Yeezus,” I will be very pleased. “Yeezus” was one of West’s best albums of his new era, touching on political issues that told a story. I’m hoping it is nothing like his recent non-album releases that were far

Childish Gambino (Donald Glover) hasn’t deprived his fans of his musical enterprise this year with his releases of “This is America” and “Feels Like Summer,” but we’re all patiently awaiting his bittersweet final album as Childish Gambino. Currently, Glover is on his “This is America” tour, and I’m predicting that a new album will be released when the tour is finished. Glover’s team has hinted that they are putting in a lot of effort for this upcoming album because it will allegedly be his last. Glover has spoken out about his distaste for the music industry, saying that “no one has good intentions.” This may seem heartbreaking for his fans, but artists need room to grow and Glover is multi-

With similar album artwork, ‘YAHNDI’ appears to be Kanye’s follow-up to his 2013 release ‘Yeezus.’ talented, so his fans can appreciate him through his other outlets.

Adele

Where in the world is Adele? We last heard from Adele in 2015 with her release of “25” and her hit “Hello,” but haven’t heard much of anything since from the soul singer. There are rumors that an album will drop in late 2019 and that she will not follow her pattern of titling

her records after the age in which they were written and instead release an eponymous album. Over the years, Adele hasn’t changed up her sound or her motive, but that hasn’t kept her from rising to the top. Despite setbacks back in 2017 due to vocal damage, we can expect big things from her when she decides to make her long-awaited return.

Developers Announce Vehicle Update for ‘Freeman: Guerrilla Warfare’ KK Game Studio announces thrilling addition to latest game Nathan Wetrosky Staff Writer

“Freeman: Guerrilla Warfare” is a game I have praised in many of my articles. I praise it because the game has been handled extremely well and the developers are not money hungry monsters. Once again, they have listened to their fanbase and have delivered what the customers want. Vehicles are soon going to be entering the fray. For some context: “Freeman: Guerrilla Warfare” is a military shooter that pits you and your personal army of mercenaries against the warring factions of a country in ruin. You have

full command of your troops and can equip and upgrade them as you please, fighting roving bandits and warlords to further increase yourself and your soldiers’ skills. You do this all while capturing towns and villages to increase the strength of your faction. The only thing that has been missing up until now has been vehicle combat, which is soon going to be a reality. “We are finally adding combat vehicles and antivehicle troops to the game,” KK Game Studio, the game’s developer, said in a news post on Steam. “In the next version, you will be able to buy combat vehicles from the vehicle dealer and deploy them into combat just like your infantry squads. Your enemies will also have

vehicles so make sure to take some anti-vehicle weapons such as an RPG launcher to the battle. We are planning for many different types of vehicles such as an armored anti-personnel vehicle, truck or technical with a mortar mounted and anti-vehicle guns.” This is tremendously exciting for those of us who have been playing the game since its release last year. When most people think of guerrilla warfare, they think of rugged militias complemented by pickup trucks with .50-caliber machine guns attached to the bed. So why should that picture not make it into a computer game based on that idea? Two things about this update that have given me

something to worry about are how the new vehicles will look and behave when commanded to do something. Look-wise, the vehicle models that are already on some of the maps currently in the game look all right. They add some variety to the mostly foliage-based environments. I have no doubt the base models will look decent. What I am worried about is how they will look while moving or using their weapons. Will the guns rotate to aim in a direction, or will the vehicles look as though they are sliding across the ground rather than driving over bumps and rocks in a more realistic way? Commanding infantry in “Freeman: Guerrilla

Warfare” so far is simplistic, but it works. Command a squad to rush an enemy position and they will do exactly that, and they will go in a straight line. Vehicles will not be this cut and dry, unfortunately, because unlike a human, ground vehicles, excluding hovercraft, must rotate their entire body to go in a direction. Sometimes this issue causes terrible pathfinding within the programming of vehicles in games. An example of this can be found in the game “Star Wars: Empire at War” developed by Petroglyph. The larger capital ships, if they are in an enclosed space, in space, might go the completely opposite way you want it to because the

pathfinding cannot figure out a way for the ship to maneuver, even though there is ample space for it to do so. Having the vehicles moving is one thing, but getting them to go exactly where a player wants may be a little bit more difficult than their infantry counterparts. “Freeman: Guerrilla Warfare” has been steadily updated with patch fixes and small improvements to the gameplay. The upcoming vehicle update, however, is the most extravagant and awesome update so far. Even with my worries, as stated above, I believe that KK Game Studio will not leave any of the bugs, which will inevitably come with the new update, unfixed. It will just take a little more time.

The Sin and the Sentence Tour Brings Hell to Sanctuary Event Center Heavy metal acts Trivium, Avatar and Light the Torch play sold out show Oct. 23 Laura Ellen Brandjord A&E Editor

Fargo got hard and heavy on a Tuesday night with the sold out The Sin and the Sentence Tour featuring Trivium, Avatar and Light the Torch at Sanctuary Event Center Oct. 23. Longhaired men clad in Mastadon T-shirts and black jeans and women with dark smokey eyes and chunky heels began lining up an hour before the doors opened in anticipation. Those waiting to buy tickets at the venue were sadly out of luck, as it was announced the show was officially sold out 10 minutes before the doors opened. As this was an all ages show, the beer garden was separate from the main floor and all alcoholic beverages were only allowed in the bar. VIP fans were given the balcony of the Sanctuary Event Center and their own bar, as well as a meet and greet opportunity and fast pass to get into the venue. The show started with an electric performance by Light the Torch, a metalcore supergroup composed of members from Killswitch Engage, All Shall Perish, Devolved and Bleeding Through. The band recently released their third studio album, “Revival,” and played multiple songs from the album. With Howard Jones’ vocals, it is hard not to associate the band with Killswitch Engage. While Light the Torch is not as popular as each member’s main bands, fans Tuesday

Swedish heavy metal group Avatar brought their demented freak show stage act to Fargo on Trivium’s tour. night recognized the shear talent of its members and enthusiastically cheered them on. From the beginning of the interim music, Avatar fans knew what was next. The old timey dance and carnival music all tie in with the Swedish metal band’s carefully cultivated image. Clad in costumes reminiscent of 1880s carnival ringmasters and dark smudged eye makeup,

they were impossible to ignore before the first song began. Lead singer Johannes Eckerstöm’s character commands the most attention with his iconic face paint that is a mix between Alice Cooper and a court jester. Eckerström addressed the audience after the first song, kicking off the mood for the set: “Ladies and gentlemen, outcasts, freaks, misfits and miscarriages, you are all here because you

are a little sick in the head.” The band’s signature interpretation of metal blends classic rock with a heavy twist. Playing through their entire catalog while Eckerström drank what one can only hope was water from a gas can, Avatar started the hair windmills and the first mosh pits of the night. The main event, Trivium took the last slot of the evening, riding the wave

of energy that had steadily grown all night. This being their fourth time in Fargo, lead singer Matt Heafy encouraged the audience to be the best Fargo crowd yet, stating that St. Paul, Minnesota was the best audience on tour so far. Enthusiastic chants of “F--St. Paul” rang through the venue, reassuring Heafy they were up to the challenge. Huge mosh and circle pits took up the entire middle

of the venue’s main floor for a majority of Trivium’s set, even pushing me against the railing as far back as the sound booth. A high-octane night filled with enthusiastic fans and high caliber bands, there is no doubt a majority of the audience left with necks stiff from headbanging and devoid of voices.

The Marvel Netflix-verse Grows Smaller Sudden cancellation of two shows leaves a small Netflix Marvel catalog Max Borman Staff Writer

On Friday, Oct 12, it was revealed that “Iron Fist” would not be returning for a third season. This comes after the second season was released a mere month ago on Sept. 7. On Oct. 19, it was announced that “Luke Cage” would also not be returning for a third season. The Marvel Netflix-verse has been rocky from the start. Their six shows have received mixed reviews from critics. Still, even with the lower ratings they tended to please audiences, and when new seasons were announced anticipation grew. That is why it was such a surprise when news broke about two of the beloved shows. The cancellation of “Iron Fist” was sad, but it was not a surprise for many. The show had some trouble gaining footing as it received poor reviews and was accused of whitewashing the lead character. The first season was horribly reviewed, as critics felt the pacing was all off and there was not enough story to fill an entire season. The second season felt better, but still failed to wow the critics, as the problems with pacing and a compelling villain still existed. The cancellation of “Luke Cage” came out of nowhere, as unlike “Iron

Fist,” “Luke Cage” received great reviews in its first season. The villains of Cottonmouth and Mariah Dillard were praised for the way they were portrayed. The first season even took home some awards. Mahershala Ali, the actor who played Cottonmouth, won a BET Award for Best Actor, and the show took home an Emmy for stunts — way more than what “Iron Fist” won. The second season of “Luke Cage,” however, did not live up to the first, but was still enjoyed by many. It gave audiences a compelling new villain in Bushmaster and continued the story of Mariah Dillard. It even left off on a huge cliffhanger. The cancellations of these two shows were a surprise to many. With Disney, the parent company to Marvel Studios, making their own streaming service, many believe that this could be their doing. However, they have said in the past that Netflix can continue making these shows. Some believe that the cancellation may mean that they are making a new show that combines the two heroes called “Heroes for Hire.” This is a high possibility, as both the characters Luke Cage and Iron Fist are a part of “Heroes for Hire” in the comics, and Netflix said that the characters will live on. This was also hinted at in the second season of “Luke

Luke Cage, Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist stand together to defend New York. Cage” with characters from “Iron Fist” playing a bigger role later in the season. The cancellation of these two shows leaves the Marvel Netflix-verse much smaller and in a tough spot. The current lineup of these shows, unless another is cancelled, would be “The Punisher” season two, “Jessica Jones” season three

and “Daredevil” season three, which just launched on Netflix. Currently, there is no news on if we will be seeing “The Defenders” season two, the show that brings all these other shows together. These shows were a big draw for many comic book fans to Netflix, and with the catalog smaller, it

may not draw in as many people. Another problem comes with the Disney streaming service that will launch in 2019 that has many shows based on their properties already planned. When that launches, Netflix could lose a lot of their audience, especially if they keep cancelling the Marvel Netflix shows.

NETFLIX | PHOTO COURTESY

We will have to see if Netflix plans to just wipe out the Marvel catalog or if they have some bigger plans for “Luke Cage” and “Iron Fist.” With that cliffhanger at the end of “Luke Cage” season two, they better wrap it up somehow.

Your Daily Routine: Gotta Love It

You do it every day, so why not make it fun? Jacob Elwell Opinion Editor

Everyone has their own routine that they go through during the week. For the most part, everyone’s routine is unique in a way. It can depend on what time you have classes, what time you have to go to work, take the dog out, etc. It’s best to fall in love with your daily routine, but that can be hard to do. Some days you just wake up and don’t feel like moving a muscle all day. However, it’s good to keep some sort of a routine. It can help you plan out your day more accordingly and prepare you for future routines you’ll have to endure. If you’re like me, you’re routine doesn’t start early in the morning. I am not a morning person whatsoever, so I tend to get my stuff done during the afternoon or early evening. I had an 8 a.m. class second semester of my freshman year that met three days a week, and that was the worst decision I have ever made. I dreaded showing up to class and always had to get up at the crack of dawn. This year, I made sure I didn’t have super early classes. I have a 9:30 a.m. class on Thursdays, but other than that I don’t have a class before 11 a.m. I like to stay up late, and this allows me to do that. I often don’t go to bed until one or two in the morning, but I’m also rarely up before 10 a.m. It’s nice because if I remember a last second due date and it’s late at night, I can get it done knowing I don’t have to be up early for a class. To me, early classes are just too much pressure. You have to get up ridiculously early only to sit in a classroom half awake, wishing you were still in bed. My brain isn’t active that early in the morning, so it’s for my learning sake that I don’t have any early classes. I mean, come on. Do you actually pay attention and take notes in your 8 a.m., or are you just thinking about how nice sleep sounds? For you people who get up early and actually function, I give props to you. You’re a different

This should be included in everybody’s daily routine. breed in the college community. Honestly, being a morning person is probably a great trait to have. It will prepare you for work at your future job, assuming you take on the traditional 9 to 5 work hours. Now that I look back at high school, I don’t know how I got up at 6:30 a.m. every day. I remember I was always dead to the world until at least 8 a.m. when I somewhat regained consciousness. I was there until 2:15 p.m. too, like how did I stay awake? Actually, I didn’t. I was caught numerous times sleeping in class. I even had one of my teachers talk to me after class because I was doing it so often. Being a college student now, I could never make this transition. I’m going to have to adapt hardcore

once I get into the real world. My mornings will be loaded with loud music, cold water and lots of caffeine. If you’re having a tough time sticking to your routine, try to think about what you have to look

as planned. Do whatever you have to do to let off steam after a long day. I’m not saying this will be easy,

but try to fall in love with your routine. You do it every day, so there’s no sense in not enjoying it. It’s probably not the most fun thing in the world, but at least you’re being productive. If you’re like me, you try to stick to your routine so you can deviate once the weekend hits. Routines typically consist of waking up, preparing food, going to class/work, getting homework done, getting a lift in, etc. Not what everyone wants to do, especially early in the week on a Monday or Tuesday. However, being productive with your days will be beneficial in the long run. It’s all about keeping that motivation and ambition to get your daily tasks done.

Letter to the Editor: G e t O u t To Vo t e Simply put, the Nov. 6 election is one of the biggest elections of our lifetime. In North Dakota, a tightly contested Senate race between Heidi Heitkamp and Kevin Cramer could be the deciding race for which party controls the Senate, which will impact policy and decide the balance on the Supreme Court. Other statewide races fill up the ballot, and ballot measures such

as legalizing recreational cannabis are also of major interest this election. In Minnesota, a new governor will be decided, as well as two elections for senators. Across the country, each seat of the House of Representatives is up for grabs. Educate yourself and vote in the election this year. College students traditionally vote at much lower rates than the rest of

the population, marginalizing the voice we have. Get out and vote, and as a population, students and young people can work toward making sure the views we have on issues are heard. If you plan to vote in Fargo, bring identification with your current residential address. If the address on your ID is not current, bring a utility bill, paystub or bank statement that shows you reside

within the precinct in which you plan to vote. Visit https://vip.sos. nd.gov/wheretovote.aspx if you live in North Dakota to find out where you vote. If you plan to vote out of state and need information on how to vote in your state, visit your state’s Secretary of State website. Look into absentee voting by mail or early voting. Early voting can take place from Oct. 29 to Nov.

Fargo Is on Fire Red, orange and yellow everywhere Grant Gloe Staff Writer

There are a lot of articles that headline could be tacked onto. It could be about the crime rate, but the most prevalent crimes would have to do with alcohol. As North Dakota State is a dry campus, I don’t really see how that’s relevant. The headline could be about politics, but you could always apply that headline to politics. It doesn’t carry a lot of weight unless Fargo City Hall is actually on fire. No, this article is about the nicest and most mundane interpretation. Look at all them cool leaves. I love this time a year. An average neighborhood turns into a burst of color. Pumpkin spice comes back. (If that’s your thing.) Eggnog comes way too early, but is still delicious. Everyone breaks out flannels and sweatshirts. Most of all, there is still one last drop of heat. It’s a wonderful time to get all your affairs in order before winter, almost like having a seasonal bucket list. This is the time to go outside. Enjoy the great outdoors. Go on walks, wait for the sun and play some sports. Ride your bikes and act like you own the road because you are simultaneously a vehicle and a pedestrian. News flash: you are a vehicle. You follow traffic laws. Don’t cut me off on the basis that I can kill you. Guess why? I will end up killing you. I don’t want to do that. It would be very stressful. Food trucks are also a great way to get out in the nice

weather. It’s also the time to start winter proofing. You don’t want to be dealing with this stuff while there is snow on the ground. Toss on your waders and get docks out of the water. Make sure your plumbing is up to snuff and won’t create a “return to sender” scenario.

Say goodbye to your loved ones, as you are about to lock yourself in your apartment to hibernate until the holidays. Say goodbye to your loved ones, as you are about to lock yourself in your apartment to hibernate until the holidays. Remember to forget your Christmas shopping until the week of. We have precious little time with the leaves and the heat. Soon we’ll have snow and finals. Neither of those things knows pity. Neither shows mercy.

Just look at them cool leaves.

Every day, we wake up. Every day, we are gifted with the beauty of life. I understand there does exist oppression, wealth inequality and a nation that feels polarized, but for the sake of this article, put that aside for just a moment. Friendships, togetherness, the ability to grow, the ability to find purpose, the ability to chase dreams, I consider these the finer things in life. I do believe materialism can bring happiness, but without the finer things in life, materialism is nothing. This article isn’t to touch on the destination of our goals, but to touch on the journey. It is important to set goals and be ambitious in life. We all have different wants in life, and I’m not here to sway you from what makes you happy, but hear me out on this. You only live once. Why not make the most of it? What is your dream goal in life? Chase it. It’s a long life, what do you have to lose? Take the risk, unless you’re okay with settling. Now that you have constructed a goal in life, think of a sub-goal, maybe something you can accomplish within 5-10 years (or less). Now think of another short-term goal, and another, and another, until you’re to the point of “day by day” goals. Each day we

have the opportunity to accomplish something. We are gifted with life, and life is one crazy roller coaster of a ride. If we’re lucky, we’re probably a quarter of the way through with life, maybe a little less. Looking in retrospect, how do you feel about your life so far? Are you completely satisfied? Are there

The Unique Minnes otan-ness of Being a Lo ons Fan For MNUFC fans, it’s personal

For the 50,000-plus Loons fans at last Sunday’s match, the club is more than a team to cheer for.

Taylor Schloemer Sports Editor

The only thing that was missing was the snow. March 12, 2017 had the snow, and that completed the experience. It was that day that the Minnesota United kicked off Major League Soccer action at home in front of 35,000 fans adorned in hats and jackets at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. Fast forward 19 months and the Loons’ rental of the stadium on the campus of the University of Minnesota went out with a bang. Over 52,000 fans made their way into the stadium last Sunday, as MNUFC faced off against the Los Angeles Zlatans. The Galaxy came in with slim playoff hopes and played that way against a Loons side already eliminated.

But the on-field product was not the talking point of the day, but it was the everything around the match, the reason why it feels good to be a soccer fan. A recordbreaking crowd, a potential to crush playoff dreams, cheap food, the list can keep going. Don’t get this wrong: the Loons are purely a Minnesota team, just like Twins, Vikings, Timberwolves and Wild. Expectations? You go into the season with some and get disappointed in the final product. Questionable front office decisions? Seeing the new star signing Angelo Rodriguez perform in a single game was enough to convince the team to sell Christian Ramirez, a fan favorite from when MNUFC were in a lower division. The former finished with just three goals. At least the front office found a serviceable holding midfielder in Fernando Bob.

TAYLOR SCHLOEMER | THE SPECTRUM

But the difference is that for the fans of the Loons, or pretty much any soccer team, everything is personal. Remember back in the NFL offseason, New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara bluntly said “F--- Minnesota”? He did, and will Vikings fans jeer him on every touch of the ball on Sunday? Probably not. Cue Galaxy forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic. In the lead up to the match, the 37-year-old claimed he would play on the turf because 50,000 people don’t show up to Loons game. “Obviously, they don’t have this crowd every home game, so I’m sure they’re not coming for Minnesota. So, I come and I make them enjoy,” Zlatan said. Being soccer fans, everyone let Zlatan hear it. “If I wanted to watch an old man, I would have watched

golf” read one sign. “I didn’t come to see Zlatan, Zlatan came to see me” read another. And then the best of them all, a glitch on the video boards. As the Galaxy’s lineup was announced, Zlatan’s picture was inexplicably missing. During the match, the loudest roars of the crowd, not including when MNUFC had a pair of goals ruled offside, came when Zlatan, of Manchester United, Paris-St. Germain and AC Milan fame, went up against Woodbury, Minnesota native Brent Kallman. It was, especially in early aerial duels, advantage Woodbury. But anyone who has seen an MLS game with Zlatan knows how the story goes. Of course, the Swede got the last laugh. The opening goal came as the big striker ghosted off the back of Minnesota center back Michael

Boxall and nodded an easy header home. His assist to Ola Kamara to seal the game was better. A perfectly curled ball in behind the Minnesota backline gave the Galaxy a 3-0 lead. But throughout the game, the feeling in the stadium was energetic. The supporters in the Wonderwall were loud throughout and made the game different from any other sporting event. Next year could be even better, even if there won’t be 50,000 fans. Minnesota United move into a brand-new nest at Allianz Field in St. Paul. The 19,700-seat stadium will be cozy, but that is part of the atmosphere. Hopefully the on-field product will be better. That remains to be seen, given the true Minnesotan nature of the team.

Terrible Fantasy Advice | Week 8 Fo r t h e s a k e o f t h e G PA a n d fa n t a s y fo o t b a l l Philip Atneosen Staff Writer

Have you ever dropped your spoon into a bowl of soup? Have you ever missed a crucial extra point, resulting in a loss to the New Orleans Saints? What about getting bitten by a mosquito? Those are all minor inconveniences. Playing fantasy football playoffs in Week 17 is a major inconvenience. In the final week of the regular season, most teams know whether they’ve made the playoffs or not. In those situations, you expect key players, such as Todd Gurley or

Rob Gronkowski, to sit out, which is a tragedy for fantasy football players. Situations like these keep me up at night and inevitably affect my GPA. If you’re a league manager, set up your league to avoid Week 17 at all costs. It’s better for your league, and it’s better for fantasy football.

Quarterback - Alex Smith

Starting Alex Smith is like buying instant ramen noodles. It’s cheap, you know exactly what you’re buying and it’s the most boring meal you will eat in any given week. Even Alex Smith’s name is the most drab name in football. In

standard and PPR leagues, Smith has scored between 12 and 20 points every week. He’s not exciting, but he’s not going to ruin your week either. So go ahead and slurp on some Alex Smith this week. By yourself. In the dark. Like a loser. The Redskins play in New York against the Giants next week. Of course, if Mitchell Trubisky is still available, pick him up and play him against the Jets.

Running Back Marlon Mack

that kind of production, I expect the Colts to use him more heavily and move away from Nyheim Hines. Due to the lead the Colts had on the Bills last week, Mack got 19 carries. The Colts play the Raiders in Oakland in Week 8, so he could be due for a similar workload. For a deeper play, look to Raheem Mostert of the 49ers. He’s had solid production two weeks in a row, and the 49ers travel to Arizona next week.

Wide Receiver Mack Chris Godwin

In Week 7, punished the Bills defense with 2 total touchdowns and 159 all-purpose yards. With

Six games into his sophomore season, Godwin has yet to be shut out. He’s

had at least two catches in each contest, and he is an established end zone threat. In fact, he paces all Buccaneer pass-catchers with four touchdowns this season. The Bucs face the Bengals defense in Week 8, which has allowed over 28 points per game to opposing offenses this season. Arizona WR Christian Kirk could be started this week also. With the dismissal of offensive coordinator Mike McCoy comes new hope for Cardinal owners. Arizona plays at home against San Francisco this week. Tight End - C.J. Uzomah Uzomah might be a risky play considering the Bengals’

pathetic performance against the Chiefs defense in Week 7, but I believe they will bounce back against Tampa Bay this week. After all, Tampa Bay is one of the only defenses that can compete with Kansas City for the worst defense in the league. The Bengals have great pass catchers on their roster, but they don’t have that many of them. Uzomah is Andy Dalton’s third or fourth best option and has a decent chance of finding the end zone in Week 8. He’s a worthy streaming candidate this week, as is Pittsburgh’s Vance McDonald, who faces the Browns.

Bison Head to Vermillion for a Tricky Test USD passing attack lead Coyotes at home Ian Longtin Staff Writer

A trap game is something that describes a scenario in which a good team is coming off a big win and faces off against an inferior opponent the following week. Saturday’s matchup featuring the North Dakota State Bison (7-0, 4-0 Missouri Valley) and the University of South Dakota Coyotes (3-4, 2-2 Missouri Valley) fits all the criteria of a trap game. The Bison are fresh off a takedown of seventh ranked Illinois State, and are now heading south to take on a Coyotes team that just lost by double digits to a Youngstown State team with a losing record. Recent history suggests that NDSU will not dare to underestimate this South Dakota squad. In 2015, the unranked Coyotes waltzed into the Fargodome to take on a then second ranked Bison and came away with a shocking 24-21 upset win. The game also seemed to be doomsday for Bison, as Carson Wentz went down with injury. Sure, by season’s end the Bison were celebrating in Frisco, Texas. Nonetheless, USD proved that the NDSU football program was in fact, mortal. Last week, the Bison’s focus was on

containing star running back James Robinson. However, this week the man to watch is Coyotes quarterback Austin Simmons. Thus far, the Coyotes offense has operated almost exclusively through the junior quarterback’s right arm. On the year, Simmons has thrown over twice the number of passes as Bison quarterback Easton Stick. USD comes into the game with the best passing attack in the Missouri Valley Football Conference at just under 300 yards per game. Despite all the passes Simmons has thrown, he has only thrown for two more scores than Stick. But the Bison defense has been swarming this season. The pass rush is led by Greg Menard and Cole Kracz, each with 4.5 sacks this season. The air attack may be necessary with the Bison front also holding the best rush defense in the conference. On the Bison side of things, the Stick and Co. will look to pick up where they left off against Illinois State. The Coyotes are coming off a game in which Youngstown State torched them for 295 yards on the ground. The banged up Bison running back group will have a chance to feast on Saturday. Bruce Anderson missed the Illinois State game, so the backfield

featured Lance Dunn and Ty Brooks. In the passing game, Stick and wideout Darius Shepherd look to keep their connection white hot. Over their last four games, Shepherd and Stick have accumulated 403 yards and four scores. USD will likely need a win on Saturday to keep its playoff hopes alive. A third straight loss in the MVFC could be the final nail in the coffin. It just goes to show how fast things change in college football. A month ago, USD was firing on all cylinders and looked like a potential dark horse in the race for the Missouri Valley crown. Yet this Saturday they’ll need 60 minutes of nearly flawless football to take down the Bison. For the Bison, this game appears to be another stepping stone on their way to another conference championship, and home field advantage in the FCS playoffs. A loss wouldn’t mean the sky is falling. Upset losses happen every week. However, a loss could be the difference between playing an FCS semifinals game in the friendly confines of the Fargodome and having to get on a plane and fly across the country. Three years ago, the Bison fell right into the

The Bison volleyball team finally picked up a five-set win and appear to have turned the corner.

With the regular season quickly drawing to a close, the North Dakota State volleyball team (6-16, 4-7 Summit League) were in desperate need of a victory Tuesday night. The Bison accomplished just that, rallying from a two-sets-to-none hole to sink Oral Roberts 3-2 (23-25, 18-25, 29-27, 25-18, 15-10). In the race for the Summit League tournament, the match was one that both sides could desperately use to bolster their standing. The match didn’t quite reach the severity of a must-win, but with both sides at the bottom of the standings, the margin for error was slim. Both sides exchanged points in early stages of the first set. McKenzie Burke smoked a kill into the hardwood and followed up with a service ace to give NDSU an early 6-5 edge. The Bison held a lead midway through the set, but ORU kept within striking distance, preventing the hosts from leading by more than three points. The set quickly unraveled for the Herd from there. The Golden Eagles snatched a 1413 lead and nursed it for the rest of the opening frame. Bison head coach Jennifer Lopez called a timeout after a defensive miscue, which was followed by an authoritative kill from Burke. Still, ORU held both the momentum and the lead, keeping the Bison at bay. It looked as if ORU had cracked when Allie Mauch darted a kill in front of the opposing sideline to tie the score at 19-19. Tied a whopping 14 times, the set hung in the balance, but two points in succession drew first blood for the Golden Eagles. Freshman Inka Inkret keyed the ORU attack, notching seven kills. The Bison came out punching in the second set, buoyed by three straight attacking errors from ORU. NDSU was on the front foot and was organized offensively while the visitors struggled. With Abbi Klos in service, the Bison opened an early 6-1 lead, which grew to a six-point lead not long after. As quickly as the Bison pounced, things once again deteriorated. With Inkret serving, the Golden Eagles carved into the Bison

advantage. Another Lopez timeout could only briefly stop the bleeding, as ORU regained control. Bria Bergman’s ace capped a streak of six unanswered points for the Golden Eagles, which propelled them into the lead. The Bison used a bend-butdon’t-break approach to stay close, but they eventually faded, as ORU swiped the second set. The switch finally flipped for Lopez’s squad in the third set. The Bison grabbed a five-point lead, making a much more concerted effort defensively. Inkret briefly restored order for the Golden Eagles, walloping a kill into the hardwood, but NDSU avoided the mid-set malaise that plagued them in the first two sets. The Bison reached set point at 24-19, but an ORU surge had fans wondering if the home squad would cough up their lead this late into the set. The Golden Eagles tied the set at 24 points — and even led 26-25 — but could not deliver the final blow. ORU drove two straight balls into the net, gifting the Bison the third set victory. With momentum and the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse crowd back on their side, NDSU had all the control in the fourth set, leading by as many as nine points and tying the match. Oral Roberts continuously put themselves out of position offensively, and the Bison punished their lack of structure, picking apart the open spaces of the court. Across 10 matches, neither side had won a five-set match. Courtesy of six kills — including the match winner — from Alexis Bachmeier, the Bison reversed the trend and escaped with a victory that could have massive implications come tournament time. With five matches remaining, the Bison are only one game back of fourth place in the win column. Current occupants of the fourth and fifth slots, Purdue Fort Wayne and North Dakota have two fewer losses than NDSU. Burke was the top contributor for the Bison, rifling 19 kills to go along with 22 digs. Mauch and Bachmeier also tallied double-digit kills.
