It’s no secret, a healthy workforce is a more focused, efficient, energetic & loyal workforce, with much lower levels of absenteeism. However, helping employees to get fit, or lose weight or maintain a healthy lifestyle has to date been pretty much mission impossible…. Well we have a solution.
We do not do boring… We are not your typical provider of wellness services… We do not do boring. In fact boring does not work for employees or employers alike… Whilst each programme is designed to exacting medical standards, each programme is also wrapped up in fun package. We see no merit at all in a corporate wellness programme that does not have at its very core, a modern and innovative strategy of dealing with the challenge of engagement or motivation. We know that old habits are hard to break, and new ones are hard to adopt, so we deal with that when we design each of our programmes. We pride ourselves on our modern and constant communication to participants of our programmes to ensure optimum engagement and we have found that competition is a great strategy to encourage participation.
Let the Games Begin!
3
We think of it as a science not an art... Our approach to Corporate Wellness is different. We have combined game mechanics with the latest thinking on behavioural science to give our client Companies a real chance of having a wellness programme that is more than just lip service to the concept but instead achieves immediate and lasting results.
We’re different... Spectrum Health is a team of Chartered Physiotherapists, Dietitians (Clinical Nutritionists), Counselling Psychologists, Speech & Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Podiatrists and Fitness instructors. Our Psychology Department has teamed up with our Chartered Physiotherapy, Fitness and Diet & Nutrition Departments to work together to apply behavioural science to motivate employees to adopt new, good-for-you habits like exercising more, eating less, stopping smoking, etc. Our unique skill set and experience allows us to provide practical innovative solutions to issues facing employers and employees today. Our multi-disciplinary team approach ensures our clients receive the best solution for their requirements. Our programmes all have strong evidence based foundations.
No Company is too small‌. In Ireland, we work for multi-nationals and for SME’s. In our experience no company is too small to have a corporate wellness programme, as we have programmes which suit each type of company and they do not cost the earth. No matter who we work for, we consistently deliver high quality services combined with unrivalled customer service and extremely reliable communication! Many companies have included a Wellness Program in their Strategic Business Plan and are unsure of the next steps.
Let us make those steps for you.
4
How can we help… There is no one size fits all wellness program to suit each client’s needs. Some companies are office based, some shift workers on a factory production line. Each company needs a bespoke programme that is tailored to their own staff and their own requirements. For this reason we look at each client individually through our Evaluate, Engage, Energise approach.
Evaluate. Evaluation of a company’s current wellness culture and an audit of employee health risks and interest areas are key factors in our approach to implementing a successful wellness plan. From this we can determine important baseline information of the employee population as well as what sort of wellness initiatives have worked or failed previously. Now we can meticulously plan ahead and implement the perfect wellness programme to suit your company’s profile.
Engage. Engagement is required from everybody involved for a workplace wellness strategy to succeed. From day one we have this on our mind; we take employees interests from the initial audit into account which allows them to be involved in the decision of what we ultimately deliver. All of our programmes are designed to ensure optimum engagement and by including your employees in the planning, we can gain higher levels of engagement. We also strongly encourage senior leadership and mid-level manager involvement to sanction engagement in these corporate wellness programmes. Sometimes employees need a little reassurance that something as silly as walking at lunch is not a condemnable act!
Energise. Whether you wish to just introduce a 0 to 5k training programme run for your staff in January to help them with their New Years’ resolution or you would like to implement a comprehensive and well thought out 12 month wellness programme, we have the resources and team required to provide the perfect bespoke solution. We always recommend the comprehensive 12 month approach as with anything, success cannot be achieved overnight. For a workplace wellness plan to succeed and be effective; long term behaviour changes must be achieved which takes more time and effort than one lunchtime seminar. If you are only focused on the outcomes and not on the actual path that will get your team there, it will be much harder to establish a natural culture of health & wellness among your company. Before long your workforce will be feeling more energised and productive!

7
Lets learn
Lunch & Learn Our lunch & learns are meant to inspire employees, cover topical issues, give ease of access to the latest teaching from experts to ultimately create a workplace of learning, communication and collaboration. We design each of our sessions to be as interactive as possible. It is important to offer a blend of information, interest and excitement, otherwise employees who find it too educational. We think that these lunch time gatherings should be half learning and half social… so we work with our clients to select the right topics that are important, fun, or both…. All sessions will be designed and written by our expert staff in each Topic. The presentations are really intended to be a brief overview of a subject, providing basic tips and suggestions related to personal behavioural situations and changes. We make absolutely sure than we never approach a presentation as an opportunity to sell our services, we have all been vitcims of outside experts doing that and it ruins the purpose of any Lunch & Learn presentation. Key ways to drive engagement: Accurate planning needs to be done ahead of time o Initial planning meeting, one month prior to programme start o Programme should flow once the monthly program starts
Marketing is very important. o Posters and an email advertising the next Lunch & Learn from two weeks prior o If the Company is providing free lunch this should almost be highlighted first! o Equally important will be highlighting the benefits of hearing the chosen topic Please see some examples of posters on next page We recommend that a monthly Lunch & Learn programme is scheduled on the same day and always at the same time, maybe 12.30pm of the first Friday of every month o The lunch bit should be the first bit of the time and only when the majority have

eaten does the talk start. To get maximum mileage out of it by promoting its role as a corporate culture builder and morale booster, we recommend that a senior management introduces the speaker and maybe uses the opportunity to reinforce a recent positive company initiative or result. The learning part of the session usually takes about 30 to 40 minutes The presentator will use a high quality PowerPoint slideshow The presentation is followed by a Q&A.
ďƒź
HR should make sure that they individually invite key, popular people to participate to show leadership commitment and indicate value. o We recommend that senior management / partners are asked by HR to attend where possible and be the first to ask questions at the end, to help break down the barriers of employees being able to ask questions.
ďƒź
Our experts will remain available for one on one questions after the session for those employees who have specific questions.
ďƒź
All of our handouts are reproducible free of charge to clients, so you can make as many copies as you need for attendees and those who could not attend.

FITNESS
LET’S GET FIT…
EMPLOYEE EXERCISE & FITNESS PROGRAMMES 14
More than just a walk in the park... The concept of staff fitness has many facets, but we understand that if an employer actively takes an interest in the fitness of their employees it needs to be both useful from a team building perspective and fun! In truth, our team have loads of ideas for fun ways to engage with employees and how to make them healthier, and this is just a snapshot. Should you be interested, further discussion will be needed to understand best requirements and we can inform you of all possibilities. As a starting point‌
15
Beginners Run Club - The 0 to 5K - 8 week plan Our 0-5K programme has been developed by our fitness team, which includes ex Irish Olympian, Gillian O'Sullivan. The programme is designed for beginners to gradually build up their running ability to be able to run 5K without stopping. The pace of the eight week running plan has been tried and tested by thousands of new runners, so you can trust the programme. Structure is important for motivation, so we will manage that process both onsite and through newsletters and pre-programme marketing. We have two types of programmes available, supervised run sessions or remotely supported programmes:
The supervised run programme includes:
Two weekly running session with one of our Fitness Instructors that will take participants from their office door for 5 km. Weekly e-newsletters with sports nutrition tips, clothing and stretching advice Final week 5K run supervised by our Fitness Instructor
The remote programme includes:
One start-up run session and Q & A with one of our Fitness Instructors Weekly motivational email programme, allowing employees to follow the programme in their own time.
Some of our client companies have arranged fully branded run gear free of charge for participants. This both is a great marketing opportunity when you have a large team of runners, also it increases the benefit of this as team building exercise. This can be arranged at additional cost. Why not have a company 5k race at the conclusion of this programme. People are motivated by competition and group events. Encourage everyone and make it a company-wide event. The employees can either walk or run. Either way, participants will engage in a physical activity. We can help you organise it.

Details & Delivery of Programme

During these weekly supervised running sessions our highly trained running coaches will provide technique coaching to reduce the risk of injury, maximise running efficiency and increase long-term performance. We understand running from a scientific level and practical standpoint, thus ensuring that exceptional coaching and advice is given to beginners & seasoned runners to assess participants running style and to correct any form issues.

If your 10K is for charity, the team that raises the most money could be rewarded
What is included? Our 10K programme has been developed by a mix of masterminds – from Fitness instructors and sports dietitians to Sports Psychologists & Physio’s. Within our package is 16 supervised run sessions, weekly email newsletters, an Optimising Sports performance talk with our Dietitian, advice on correct clothing & shoes, PDF Announcement posters, advice and programme detail sheets. Marathon Training Completing a Marathon is challenging, something only 1% of the world have accomplished but with our all encompassing training programme it is achievable and fun because the right support is in place. We know marathon training is much more than just the physical act of running so we offer participants a comprehensive training package that will successfully prepare anybody for a marathon in 24 weeks. This may seem daunting, so the programme is broken down into different goals; 10k, ½ Marathon & Full Marathon. We pull in our expert team of Fitness Instructors, Sports Dietitians, Physiotherapists, Psychologists & Podiatrists at different stages to cover every aspect of marathon training, guaranteeing results. How our Marathon training programme works
24 week programme where training 5 days a week is expected Weekly emails with tips, advice & running schedule for week ahead Run Clinic - regular meet ups with our expert team to check in on the group, give marathon related advice and answer any queries directly Idea of topics covered in Run Clinic/emails: o Fitness Instructors – technique, posture, clothing, running advice o Sports Dietitian – sports nutrition to maximise performance etc. o Physiotherapists – Injury prevention, rehab, importance of massage o Podiatrists – footwear, biomechanic assessment o Psychologists – positive thinking, They can also be contacted via our advice line outside of these meet ups.
Marathon training is challenging and can be easy to give up on, especially when you take it on alone. For this reason we encourage employees to form an internal run club through which they can support & motivate each other and train together according to our running schedule.
Please note: ‘Run Clinic’ is available outside of this marathon programme as a standalone offering. Topics covered in ‘Run Clinic’ can be applied & beneficial to advanced runners, long distance runners etc.

Bootcamp Our boot camp is a circuit-training-style programme where recruits can expect to work hard but also enjoy a new fun dimension to exercising. With our Bootcamp, no two sessions are the same giving all recruits a great workout without the boredom of a repetitive workout routine.
Where & When?
Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for 6 weeks Sessions held in a park or open space as near as possible to your office Times are flexible subject to your own staff / work patterns

The Programme Every class is made up of a number of different types of exercises from aerobic and cardio, strengthening, toning & conditioning, flexibility, and of course the odd game to keep recruits on their toes! We use circuits and other techniques to give everyone an overall workout. Our HIT (High Intensity Training) approach has great variation and is great fun. Some sessions may involve tyre flipping, boxing, free weights, burpees and relays… While other classes might have more body weight exercises, kettlebells, running, tug of war and skipping. Whatever the focus, each session will work the heart and lungs and give almost every muscle in your body a workout but most importantly it will be great fun!
Whatever the season, we have a Bootcamp to get you sorted...

We have APPI Pilates classes, suitable for those who exercise regularly to those who have been inactive due to injury.

The result of this is often back and neck pain, and discomfort while performing everyday tasks. We have classes to suit all levels of ability and ages. Our classes are centred on creating a strong core to help you recover from back or neck problems by improving the supporting muscles. The goal of the Pedometer challenge is for each participant to walk 10,000 steps on average a day.

Spectrum Health is a proactive Mental Health Clinic provider Spectrum Health do Clinical Psychology & Counselling Psychology really well We provide exceptional Employee Assistance Programmes…. We also partner with those companies that have the old fashioned EAP and want more Our clinical standards are beyond reproach but we believe that it is our innovation in approach and continuous creativity is what sets us apart.
More than just EAP We are all aware that a well-run and broad EAP service is an important component part of demonstrating fulfilment of any employer’s duty of care requirements to employees. However, there is a case to make that employers take a more proactive approach to managing stress within their workforce. In terms of Emotional Counselling, our vision is that the EAP service is used as the over-flow / out of hours service and that the main focus for Employee Emotional Assistance is through onsite Counselling Psychologists within the company. We consider ourselves as thought leaders in our industry and we would love an opportunity to back that statement up.
EAP has an important role in any company but if you want to really engage with employees to improve their mental health…. you need more than just EAP……. 31

Our goal is to achieve the best outcomes for each of our clients and in this case the entire company and not just the employee are considered a client. For this reason, we recommend a time bound CBT approach to EAP referrals. We intend to support our own or a third party EAP service with an onsite programme that is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) based with well-structured guided self-help programme to get employees back to work with the inherent coping strategies that they will need to avoid a to help them stay there.

We think we can make a real 32 difference
Options for employees referred into us by EAP
We believe that within the EAP service, employees need to be provided with a wide range of convenient and clinically robust options for face to face counselling. However, these should not be at the cost of a consistency of service levels. When an employee is referred into Counselling by the EAP provider, we think that as best practice they should be given these options: Face to Face Counselling onsite within the company by a PhD trained Counselling Psychologist Face to Face Counselling within the Spectrum Health network, which includes clinics in Baggot Street, Churchtown, Drumcondra, IFSC, Newbridge, Ranelagh, Temple Bar and the Beacon and soon within our 28 clinic network across Ireland. Face to Face Counselling within our approved network of 200 Counsellors nationwide. Remote Counselling through our i-couch portal – which is a secure video conferencing based counselling.
We would like to reinforce that there will be a consistency of therapeutic approach across all of these mediums.

An idea is just an idea…. Delivery & execution is key Everyone needs to realise that Stigma is a corrosive thing
Before we start, we will agree a marketing plan
We need to educate employees on Stigma using real life experiences which might include:
Communication of these kinds of ideas is not easy, so it will take some time and effort. Once the message has been defined and agreed between the parties, structurally we will put in place an internal marketing & communications plan.
-
-
blaming people for their mental problems … shaming people for their mental problems … not wanting to get close to them … fearing them … calling them names … talking behind their back … laughing about them … people thinking they have nothing in common with people with mental problems … considering mental problems embarrassing or disgraceful… thinking people with mental problems are childlike … thinking they are unpredictable… thinking they are violent
and in many other ways. It is almost universally stated that people who have mental health problems find that others’ perceptions of mental health is the worst aspect, often without knowing it, or meaning to.
The marketing plan could include: -
An attractive internal website with plenty of easily accessible information, links and activities.
-
Emails, which will be written in a way that we would be happy if they went viral and outside employees were sent them.
-
Posters
-
A continuous programme of educational and informative Webinars to help educate employees on mental health problems, e.g. Signs of stress, simple mindfulness techniques
37
We all need to know if this strategy works, so time will be spent measuring effectiveness
We think it is essential to build time and budget for evaluation. To track how a campaign works, we should get a baseline of data within your company. We recommend an anonymous survey to aggregate data on those with mental health problems and how they are treated and those without mental health problems and how they viewed those that have. We believe that there most likely will be surprising figures around levels of stigma or discrimination. We recommend evaluation at regular intervals (maybe in sub-groups) to ensure that changes can be made to build on what is working well and possibly alter activities that are not effective. The key to this is to follow up research six months or a year later to see if attitudes and/or behaviour are improved. Also, it would be no harm in asking those that the campaign was intended to help whether it has made a difference. We can do this simply by talking to those that we have seen in clinic and discuss whether they have experienced change. We will constantly look at what worked and why, what didn’t work and why, and consider what we need to do differently. It is important to learn from the things that do not work – things often do not turn out as planned! We believe that data should be shared with you, whether successful or not. Sharing information even on projects that did not succeed makes sense, especially if we have an idea of what our next steps are to redress the issue. Also showing failure in a workplace environment may well be the stimulus to drive change, we guess that most employees do not like to fail. Finally, we would suggest that data recorded is shared internationally and let employees be proud if they have managed to throw stereotypes out of the window. We suggest that the focus of this PR is about the amazing employees, rather than the amazing company, a small distinction.
38
If you partner with us, we believe it is our job not to just provide excellent services but also to crucially drive engagement….. We hope you like some of our ideas and we hope that we have demonstrated that our focus will not only be on clinically excellent services but also on a continuous plan to minimise the barriers to seeking help. Below are some viable communication campaign ideas on Stigma alone designed by Spectrum Health’s Executive team, Communications team and Psychology team... “Like minds”
which is all about comparison between those with mental health problems and those that do not. This campaign also will deal with self-stigma is the process in which people turn stereotypes towards themselves
“Just think”
focused on the impact that a stigma has on those with mental health. Reinforcing the impact of other people’s attitudes to those with mental health.
Our team can also look into bespoke company coloured rubber wristbands as a way of your employees showing support. Perhaps the proceeds can be directed towards an appropriate charity or towards another promotion campaign. Whether you are in love with any of our emotional wellbeing campaign ideas or not, we hope that you take away our enthusiasm, passion and creativity in approach. You will not see a poster with a tree on it or a lake with an expanding pool of ripples….

Mindfulness… not just a page on a brochure… but a part of everything we do Mindfulness has a key role in our therapeutic approach across all of our Counselling & Psychology services.
Our full mindfulness training package is an 8 week course. Day 1 is a 4 hour workshop which drives the engagement needed to allow for changes needed for an optimization in performance, social relations and well-being.
We have a range of specific training services depending on need. The first thing that we always highlight is that Mindfulness is not for everyone… some people just do not tune into it at all… So we always recommend that before Mindfulness is introduced into a company, a series of talks and a webinar is arranged so that potential participants can understand if this is for them. We will use those introductory talks to motivate and inspire employees to take up mindfulness training in order to develop a happier and more efficient life.
We recommend that our Optimisation Bootcamp, Fitness for the mind is a good place to start. This is a great intermediary step for employees who are curious but still not sure whether mindfulness is the way. We think “meditation” is a word with the wrong stereotype so we leave it off our mindfulness programme names This is a 4 hour interactive workshop which is entertaining and enlightening. It is a great introduction to mindfulness training. It provides all the knowledge needed for each participant to take up the training on an individual basis afterwards.
Thereafter, this corporate specific programme has 1 hour workshops once weekly which are all about learning the skills needed to implement a mindful and efficient way of working. The program can easily be tailored to fit any existing work-life strategy at the company. We can develop a bespoke programme on Mindful leadership (good managers become great managers) should this be of interest.
Mindfulness fosters the ability to inhibit those very quick emotional impulses. 40

CALL IT QUITS - Smoking Cessation Programme Smoking is the single biggest cause of ill-health and death in our society. If you smoke, you are in good company as there are still 1 million smokers in Ireland. The stats are shocking and should not be ignored. 1 in 2 smokers in Ireland will die of a tobacco related disease. Stop and think about that for one minute… 1 in every 2 smokers…. That the same odds of correctly calling “Tails” when flipping a coin. But it doesn’t have to be that way for you, it really does not.
IF AT FIRST YOU DON’T SUCCEED, TRY, TRY AND TRY AGAIN…. Every single smoker knows that smoking is bad for them. Whilst they may not have known the 1 in every 2 stat and may not be experiencing illeffects from smoking yet, they know it is really bad for them. So why still smoke? Research in Ireland shows that 8 out of 10 smokers want to quit. More interesting still is that 4 out of every 10 smokers actually try to quit each year, some a few times a year. Addiction to nicotine can be very difficult to overcome. However, it is not impossible. Of those who have quit- just over a third (35%) quit on their first attempt- and overall half of them succeeded after their second attempt. The trick is to keep trying and get help.
WE CAN HELP Quitting smoking for good doesn’t automatically mean that you should need to tighten your belt... If anything, quitting for good will make your belt a lot looser, well financially at least (Currently a 20a-day smoker spends €3,395 per year on cigarettes).... and may we just point out that is after tax money… so you have to earn a lot of money to decide to burn it away. There are lots of reasons to quit smoking. One is the financial cost. The team at Spectrum Health can help you to kick the habit once and for all without gaining a pound.
43
STOP MAKING EXCUSES Remember that about 80% of smokers want to quit, so why they have not quit yet is one of the crucial things that our programme deals with. By the end of our programme, we make sure that participants can no longer use the following top excuses Excuse #1: Excuse #2: Excuse #3: Excuse #4: Excuse #5: Excuse #6: Excuse #7: Excuse #8: Excuse #9: Excuse #10:
It doesn’t matter if I quit. The damage has already been done. If I stop smoking, I’ll get fat. I cannot give up now, I’ve got a lot on at work. I get really cranky when I give up. I will give up tomorrow, next month, when I’m 30, or before I am 40. I’ve switched to “light” cigarettes—they’re not as bad for me as regular ones. I eat well and exercise, so it doesn’t matter if I smoke. I’ve tried to quit before and failed—it’s too difficult. I can stop whenever I want. I’ve cut back to three cigarettes a week so I am fine.
Our philosophy is not to just ignore the excuses or simply refuse to accept them but to empower each employee to be able to either discard each and every one of their excuses themselves or simply to make them realise that the excuse is just not a good enough reason to continue to smoke.
OUR SMOKING CESSATION PROGRAMME Research clearly shows that group therapy and self-help assisted programmes are more effective than other methods in helping people to quit. In fact self-help assisted programmes like ours have been shown to be 51% effective, which is quite a good outcome when compared to a 15% for Nicotine Replacement Therapy, 23% for GP Prescription drugs and 31% for the e -cigarette. Studies have shown that it takes at least 6 weeks post quitting before the amount of nicotinic receptors in the brain return to the level of a nonsmoker. Our programmes are all 8 weeks long and you won’t be forced to quit on the first day. Our Psychologists are extremely well trained in helping people overcome addiction. In a group therapy setting our Psychologists work with employees to help them unravel the psychological factors and the emotional reasons that may have contributed to the reason that they are still smoking. We provide each employee the strategies and skills needed to refrain from smoking, as well as helping them to cope with the withdrawal symptoms they are likely to suffer. Together we will break the addiction.

HR Services Psychometric Testing for Employee Development Psychometric Testing is a valuable tool to use for the purposes of employee development in the workplace across all levels of the organisation. The individual profiles generated by these tests provide the candidate with a better understanding of their motivation, general abilities, interests and personality, all important issues within a workplace context. The test itself is completed online. Upon completion, our psychologist will discuss the developmental implications of this profile in a ninety minute 1:1 session with the candidate. The following seminars designed by our Work & Organizational Psychologists can be useful for HR teams, managers and employees alike.

The ‘psychological contract’ has emerged in the last twenty years as an important concept to those responsible for managing behaviour in organisations. It explains the dynamics of the concept and also delivers practical advice on how it can be effectively managed so as to improve relations with employees.

Work Life Balance The elusive work life balance that we all long for but never seem to attain is more in reach with our approach and our programmes. People focus too much on work life balance as an end goal, you don’t just wake up one day and feel like you have got there; that everything is balanced and as it should be. Life is dynamic with circumstances always changing and you have to move with it, so we think of it as a ‘work in progress’ – something we are always working on and not a static end goal. If we know how to use our energy efficiently every day, what coping techniques we can call on when stress takes over, have strategies to manage day to day activities comfortably; it is easier for a good balance to become part of our everyday life. Through our approach to work life balance we can help you to achieve the most out of each day. We offer a variety of programmes, workshops and seminars offering different techniques, strategies and advice on how to restore and maintain a healthy balance into your life Mindfulness workshop Relaxation Techniques workshop Lunch & Learn Seminars

Financial Advice Trusting your finances to the advice and guidance of another individual can be entirely distressing as well as expensive, leading people to manage their money themselves. Often people who take the DIY approach don’t know how or where to begin; allow us to help you get started in the right direction. Our experts won’t tell you who to bank with or where to invest because that sort of advice is not a sure thing and wouldn’t help you long term. We focus on the now, on the day to day issues we face and how to make your money go further each month. We can teach you everyday money management skills, offer tips on how to stop wasting your money and budgeting tricks to prepare you for what may come your way. You may need advice on taking out a mortgage or a loan, how to plan for your own future, for a family or your children’s future or you might not just need some help on how to get through the year debt free. Whatever the reason; our experts are independent advisors not trying to sell you financial services so you know you can trust their advice.
