As much as a Grand Prix weekend is about the race, for many that final 10 minutes of qualifying will be the highlight of the weekend. It should be noted though the pecking order that gets established in Australia isn’t necessarily going to be repeated elsewhere. It’s a point that has become increasingly pertinent with Pirelli’s ever wackier tyres. Reports of even higher degradation with the latest generation of the Italian rubber indicates that we could again be in for a season that sees relatively car performance fluctuate wild with track temperature. As there are few greater contrasts than between a wintery Barcelona and a sun soaked Melbourne, it stands to reason that even if a pecking order could have been clearly defined from the tests, there are no guarantees that it would be the same as what we’ll see in Australia...

A

ustralia’s 1980 Formula 1 World Champion Alan Jones returns to the role of full-time television pundit this season. Some 10 years after a local broadcast rights switch from Channel 9 to Network Ten brought Jones’ on-air partnership with Darrel Eastlake to an end, Jones steps into the Ten team alongside experienced broadcaster Greg Rust and former motorcycling great Darryl Beattie. Jones’ to-the-point observations and cutting wit can be expected to add greatly

to the pre and post-race coverage, and to say that the retired racer is looking forward to it would be an understatement. “There’s always plenty to talk about when it comes to Formula 1,” he tells Speedcafe.com’s F1 Race Guide. “Whenever you’ve got different nationalities, lots and lots of money and egos you can’t jump over, it’s always going to be interesting. I am really looking forward to the season. “My job won’t be to say that the blue car

passed the red car, people can see that. My job is to say something at the end of the program that has people going ‘shit, I didn’t know that’. That’s when I will have done my job.” All-In-One Security

The season itself promises to be a cracker, with winter testing indicating that the battle will be closer than ever before, particularly among heavyweight squads Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren, Lotus and Mercedes.. “I think it’s going to be very competitive this year because it’s an evolution rather

than a revolution in terms of the rule package and therefore the cars,” notes Jones. “I think there’s going to be a lot more competition and a lot more overtaking this year and, let’s face it, last year wasn’t bad. I think the stability of the rules for this year will allow the other well-resourced squads to catch Red Bull up a bit.” Although it goes without saying that a lot has changed in Grand Prix racing since Jones’ last race in 1986, so too has the sport evolved greatly in the last three years alone. The move to faster-wearing Pirelli tyres in 2011 instantly changed the very fabric of how a Formula 1 race plays out. The unpredictable, occasionally to the point of chaotic, style of tyre conditiondependent racing is something that Jones isn’t completely sold on. “I’m a bit mixed on those sort of issues,” he says of the tyres. “I come from an era where the green light came on, or the flag dropped, and you drove until you saw the other flag - the chequered one. There were no pitstops, no tyre changes, no nothing. You just had to manage your pace, your tyres and often your fuel economy all by yourself. Now there’s a lot more strategy involved and half the time when a driver does a ripper start the first thing he does is thank his engineer for the launch control!

rules so that they’re the same for qualifying and the race. Allowing drivers to use it everywhere in qualifying and only on one or two straights in the race didn’t really make any sense.

An increased emphasis on recovery systems and wholesale aerodynamic changes brought about by new, safetyconscious, nose height regulations will also add to the challenge for the teams.

“The knock-out qualifying format that they have now is brilliant. I like watching qualifying just as much as the race. The only issue that they have to keep under control is the importance of the tyre allocation. We don’t want people sitting on pit wall because they’re saving tyres for the race, and we don’t want races decided on Saturday afternoon based on who has what tyres left. There’s a real danger of seeing both of those situations play out during the year.”

“I love change,” says Jones. “I’m looking forward to seeing how everybody goes about the new challenge. As far as I’m concerned they can change all the rules every two or three years. It’d be horrifically expensive, but at the same time it (finding solutions to new problems) is what Formula 1 is really about.

The stability in regulations from 2012 to 2013 may be a large factor in ensuring a close season ahead, but the prospect of widespread changes for 2014 has Jones excited too. After eight seasons with 2.4 litre V8s, the championship will move into a new 1.6 litre turbo era next year, bringing forced induction back into the mix for the first time in 25 years.

“It gives the designers a chance to make their mark, and it’s also good for the engine manufacturers. There’s talk of Honda coming in under the new rules, which will be exciting, and it’ll be a fresh challenge for the existing players. “The only danger is that we’re going to have everyone on the street that has a 1.6 litre turbo car running around thinking they’re Sebastian Vettel!”

“I don’t know if I like how determined it is in the garages now, but I do like the unpredictability of it. It makes it interesting, and like everybody I want to turn the TV on at the beginning of a Grand Prix and not be sure of who’s going to win. “Anything like DRS or KERS, etc, should be there if it makes it more unpredictable and encourages passing, though. It’s a good move this year to tighten up the DRS

AJ on... Red Bull “Sebastian (Vettel) has put himself into some fairly special company with three world titles. You can’t take anything away from him, but if there’s one criticism it’s that he’s certainly a bloke that likes to get out front and stay there. I’d like to see him get into a few more squabbles and come from a bit deeper in the pack this year. He’s got a reputation for not being at his best in the really hard wheel-to-wheel battles. “At the end of the day though, Seb’s just very, very quick. More times than not he’ll out-qualify Mark (Webber) and get a better start... which sometimes isn’t difficult! Mark has come up the hard way and I think mentally he’s better placed than Seb in a wheel-to-wheel fight, but I think that Seb just has too much raw speed for him.” Ferrari “The general consensus in the paddock is that Fernando is the most complete driver in the field at the moment and it’s hard to disagree with that. I think they’ve improved that Ferrari to a point where he could be a real contender for the championship. He’ll be right there all year, without a doubt. “Felipe though is really under pressure. It was touch and go as to whether he stayed for 2013, and if he doesn’t lift his game by a fair percentage then he won’t be there next year.” McLaren “It’ll be very interesting to see how Sergio Perez goes at McLaren this year. I was impressed with his performance last year in the Sauber, and obviously McLaren was as well. He’s made a solid fist of the winter testing since joining McLaren, and could give Jenson a bit of a hurry-up.” Mercedes “There are obviously reasons that Lewis has gone to Mercedes that the public and myself aren’t aware of. We’re told consistently that it wasn’t money and

maybe he just felt that he needed a fresh home. You don’t really know. But he’s made the decision and at the end of the day I think it’ll be vindicated. “I think Mercedes will rise to the occasion. They have looked very good towards the end of the winter testing, and they’ve certainly got the drivers to do the business now.” Lotus “Kimi had a fantastic comeback last year. To have a few years away from it dabbling in rally and NASCAR and all the rest of it, and come back with a team that a lot of people didn’t consider to be a true frontrunner, they did a wonderful job last year. “The Lotus has appeared very solid over the winter as well, so here’s hoping they can keep that going. For Romain, he’s just got to increase his brain size and decrease his ball size! Once he finds the balance he’ll be away.” AUSTRALIAN GP TV SCHEDULE

The best of the rest “I think the Williams could spring a few surprises this year. They seem to have a good car and there’s nothing wrong with those Renault engines. On the driver front, I’d put Maldonado in the same category as Grosjean. He’s got the raw speed to really be something, he just needs to harness it better. I think he could be a bit of a dark horse. “Naturally I was very pleased to see Williams take that breakthrough win last year. It’s like your old school. You have a soft spot for them and I still know most of the people there. Whenever I go to a Grand Prix I spend a fair bit of time there and follow them more closely than the other teams. It’s very gratifying to see them hopefully come good.”

Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit Technical preview with Lotus F1 This is one of the tracks where there is a reasonable amount of track evolution. Between first practice and qualifying, with a similar fuel load, the track can be up to three seconds per lap quicker. The weather can be blistering hot one day and freezing cold the next. There have been race weekends with 14ºC during qualifying and 40ºC during the race. It can change very quickly, and you have to set the car up to be able to cope with both. Normally at this time of year it’s in the midtwenties and very pleasant, which causes no trouble at all, but you do have to keep one eye on the forecast as it can change rapidly. This affects not just engine temperatures and so on but also how you use the tyres. If there’s a chance that the temperature may significantly rise or fall you have to have a compromise between qualifying and race setup. TURNS 1 + 2 The end of the straight is the fastest section of the track, with speeds of 300kph achieved. There’s then significant braking into turn 1. The gravel trap at the end of the start-finish straight sees a lot of action over the weekend. It’s particularly attractive to cars on the first lap.

TURN 3 Turn 3 offers a good overtaking opportunity. TURNS 11 + 12 The high speed chicane of turns 11 and 12 is taken in excess of 200 kph, with a reasonable kerb providing an extra challenge. TURNS 13 - 15 This final sector is relatively low speed compared to the rest of the track; conversely, there’s a good amount of gain to be made here.

2. BRAKES It’s a circuit that is medium to high in terms of brake wear. Certainly nowhere near as fierce as Canada, but it won’t be a track where we have our smallest brake ducts on. 3. SUSPENSION A reasonably soft car is required to be able to maximise the grip potential from the slippery Albert Park surface. Set-up evolves over the weekend to match the improving track surface, as the park roads grow into a race track through cars racing on them for the only time in the year. As a counterpoint to the requirement for

TURNS 15 + 16 The last two turns, 15 and 16, are where you want the car to work best. These are very slow, and are where the most lap time can be gained from the car. If you increase grip through here by 5% you see a difference of around 0.2s per lap which is huge.

THE CAR 1. REAR WING Relatively high levels of downforce are required for Albert Park so the car runs with a lot of rear wing. Not to Monaco levels, but comparable amounts to Barcelona and Silverstone.

direction requirements to need a stiffer set-up to aid responsiveness. It’s important to have a strong front end, as understeer is potentially the main factor. Although there are some sections where good traction is important the priority is to have good turn in and change of direction through the chicanes. ™

4. TYRES Medium and soft compounds. It’s not a circuit that’s particularly hard on tyres. 5. FRONT WING Proportionally more front wing is used as a counter to the low-grip nature of the track which can provoke understeer.

in seasons with only modestly revised technical regulations, the pecking order does not often change greatly from that seen the previous year.

Ferrari, Mercedes, Lotus and McLaren have all showed glimpses of great potential across the pre-season testing, indicating that we’re in for a hard-fought season.

Just as he was at the conclusion of 2012, Fernando Alonso is perhaps the best placed to challenge the Red Bull show this weekend.

Red Bull did not sparkle over the winter, but nor did it appear to want to; the team instead keeping its cards close to its chest. One should keep in mind, however, that

Mercedes, it appears, has made genuine steps forward, and a podium finish for either Nico Rosberg or new recruit Lewis Hamilton should not be a surprise here. Likewise, both Lotus drivers should be eyeing the rostrum, at a minimum.

Jenson Button has won three of the last four Australian Grands Prix, but the McLaren has been rather inconsistent over the winter testing, so predicting another victory is a significant gamble. Of the rest, expect Nico Hulkenberg to be fighting the big guns in his Sauber, with both Force India drivers also sniffing points. Less is expected of Toro Rosso and Williams, while the Caterhams and Marussias will have the back all to themselves after the off-season demise of HRT.
