Plenty to play for

The battle for the world championship is over but there is still plenty to play for as the Formula 1 circus heads to Abu Dhabi this weekend.

The season won’t go down as one of the all time greats for the sport, but it must be said that Sebastian Vettel’s unprecedented fourth consecutive world championship has been a huge achievement. To be a four time champion at the age of just 26 is incredible and I’m sure somewhere Michael Schumacher is fearing his record of seven titles is under threat. While Vettel can enjoy his success this weekend, the final three races of the season are set to provide F1 fans with a thrilling battle for the runners’ up spot in the championship. Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, Lotus‘ Kimi Raikkonen, Red Bull’s Mark Webber and Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg are all set to do battle over it. The runners’ up spot is still yet to be decided in the Constructors’ Championship with Mercedes, Ferrari and Lotus all vying for the place and the extra funds that goes with the position. Just 28 points separates the three teams and you can guarantee team principals will be instructing their drivers to fight hard for the cause. There are several drivers whose futures in the sport are far from secure too and will no doubt be driving to impress. Just this week the driver merry go round entered another phase with the news that Pastor Maldonado is set to leave Williams at the end of the year. This was followed with rumours linking the Venezuelan to the vacant seat at Lotus which Nico Hulkenberg is supposedly targeting. In the other direction, Maldonado’s move has produced fresh speculation that he is set to be replaced at Williams by outgoing Ferrari driver Felipe Massa. The other news to break this week is that Mercedes’ technical genius Ross Brawn is likely be looking for a new team. Brawn, who masterminded all of Schumacher’s world titles at Benetton and Ferrari and was the driving forced behind his own Brawn GP team’s success in 2009, would be a highly lucrative target for any F1 team. Whether it is on track battles or behind the scenes deals the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is set to provide its own set of stories.

Round 17 - Abu Dhabi I Cover Story

The Race for Second Place Speedcafe.com’s Tom Howard assesses the five drivers to do battle for the runners’ up spot Sebastian Vettel’s relentless domination of the season to secure an impressive fourth world title may have bored more than it pleased, but the race for second place in the championship promises a mouth watering battle. With just three races of the season remaining, the majority will be casting one eye on 2014 but five drivers still have plenty to play for with the 2013 runners’ up spot yet to be claimed. As it stands, Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, Lotus‘ Kimi Raikkonen, Red Bull Racing’s Mark Webber and Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg are all in with a shout of finishing second to Vettel. Only 65 points separates Alonso, who holds second in the championship, and Rosberg in sixth with 150 points still up for grabs.

Fernando Alonso

Team: Ferrari Current position: 2nd Points: 207 Wins: 2 (China,Spain) Podiums: 8 Top 5’s: 11 Average Qualifying position: 6 Average Finishing position: 4 Form (last five races): 2nd, 2nd, 6th, 4th, 11th As his points total shows and statistics back up, Ferrari’s Alonso has been the most reliable and consistent challenger to Vettel in this year’s title race. Despite finding himself behind the wheel of a car lacking in pace, the fiery Spaniard has once again showed his class to out perform his car for the majority of the campaign. Two victories early in the season would have encouraged the two-time world champion, but Ferrari has failed to deliver in the development battle and has slowly dropped further and further behind. Qualifying has highlighted the car’s frailties with an average grid position of sixth, forcing Alonso to rely on skill and race pace to battle from the midfield to podium results.

Alonso, who has scored more championship points than anyone in the history of the sport, has accrued the most wins and podiums compared to his rivals but is struggling for form leading into this weekend. His last three races have only yielded 20 points and if this continues he could lose his grip on second position.

Round 17 - Abu Dhabi I Cover Story

Kimi Raikkonen

need a strong finish to the season, lying 38 points behind Alonso. The Brit has proved a force to be reckoned with in the Mercedes claiming five pole positions and a grid slot of average of third.

Team: Lotus Current position: 3rd Points: 183 Wins: 1 (Australia) Podiums: 8 Top 5’s: 10 Average Qualifying position: 7.5 Average Finishing position: 5 Form (last five races): 11th, 3rd, 2nd, 5th, 7th

But he has only been able to convert just one of his pole positions into a win as the Mercedes has struggled to preserve its tyres in the race. Despite, Hamilton and Mercedes’ high tyre degradation figures, he has managed to finish in the top five on more occasions than any of his rivals for the runners up spot.

The Iceman Kimi Raikkonen is just 24 points behind Alonso and recent form has seen the Lotus driver rapidly close the gap to his soon -to-be Ferrari team mate. The 2007 world champion has prided himself of consistency with just one retirement and one finish outside of the points in 2013. The campaign has delivered a win in Australia, six second place finishes and one third. In fact, only Vettel and Lewis Hamilton can boast more top 5 finishes than Raikkonen this year.

It has been five races since he has visited the podium but if Mercedes unlock the secret to tyre preservation, he could will be factor in the race for second place.

Lewis Hamilton Team: Mercedes

srentrap munitalp duorp ruCurrent O position: 4th The Lotus-Renault has also proved to be one of the surprises of the season with the team snapping at Ferrari’s heels for third in the Constructors‘ championship. Currently they are the form team with drivers Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean helping the British outfit to five podiums from the last four races. ™

ytiruceS enO-nI-llA

With Raikkonen is leaving the team for Ferrari next year, a lack of motivation could be his biggest weakness in the battle to finish second. But there is no doubt with an average finishing position of fifth, if he performs he could easily snatch the runners up spot from Alonso.

Points: 169 Wins: 1 (Hungary) Podiums: 5 Top 5’s: 12 Average Qualifying position: 3 Average Finishing position: 5 Form (last five races): 9th, 5th, 5th, Ret, 6th It is fair to say Lewis Hamilton’s debut season at Mercedes hasn’t gone as well as he’d hoped. But considering McLaren’s fortunes this year, it has been a smart move with the 2008 world champion recording one victory among five podiums so far in 2013. Hamilton remains firmly in the battle to finish second in the championship but will

Mark Webber

Team: Infiniti Red Bull Racing Current position: 5th Points: 148 Wins: 0 Podiums: 5 Top 5’s: 9 Average Qualifying position: 6 Average Finishing position: 5 Form (last five races): 3rd, 15th, Ret, 2nd, Ret Mark Webber’s final season in Formula 1 has been a tough one and despite several bouts of bad luck he remains in contention to finish the year as runner up. The Red Bull driver has statistically had the best car underneath him all year as proved by team mate Sebastian Vettel, but for several reasons it hasn’t fallen into

place for the Australian. Reliability issues have hampered race strategies and even seen him retire from three races. He was also robbed of a victory at Malaysia in the famous “Multi 21” spat between himself and Vettel. He will undoubtedly like to score another victory before his F1 career comes to an end and if he has any hopes of finishing runner up he will probably need at least two victories to put himself in the mix. Webber has proved he has the pace to win races this year and has come close on at least three occasions. An alternator failure cost him the chance to battle for the victory at India last week and a three stop strategy failed him previously in Japan. If everything comes into alignment, watch out for Webber.

Nico Rosberg

the German has chalked up two victories, which is the most recorded by any driver with the exception of Vettel. For that fact alone the season will be Rosberg’s most successful to date.

Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg can mathematically finish second but like Webber he will need wins and misfortune to beset his rivals in order to finish 2013 as runner up. While Mercedes’ tyre degradation issues have hindered his performances in races,

Rosberg has showed impressive pace in qualifying similar to his team mate Hamilton, proving the Mercedes is arguably the best car over a single lap.

All-In-One Security

After a run of seven races without a podium finish, last weekend’s Indian Grand Prix brought an end to the streak with a deserved second place. A performance like that could be the tonic to kick start Rosberg for a late charge to second in the championship.

Round 17 - Abu Dhabi I Track Details

11

YAS MARINA CIRCUIT Technical preview with the Lotus F1 team

THE CAR Rear Wing The more recent circuits – Suzuka, Korea and India – have required a high-medium downforce level. While the Yas Marina continues this trend, it also factors in a need to maintain good speed on the long straights while maximising grip in the lowspeed final sector. Front Wing Turn 2 is the crucial corner for determining how much front wing is used. More front wing is required here than for any other corner, so you need sufficient front wing to prevent excessive understeer at Turn 2 without causing too much detriment elsewhere. Suspension The kerbs are more pronounced than seen at some other tracks, in particular Turns 8,9 and through the last sector. A soft car which rides the kerbs well helps here, but it’s a trade off between having a soft car which will ride over the kerbs and one which is stiff enough for the driver to have a sharp change of direction which is necessary for the chicanes – 8-9 and 11-13. Brakes There are reasonable braking demands, especially into Turns 5, 8, 11 which have

www.speedcafe.com

quite high speed approaches to the low speed corners. Temperatures will need to be monitored as will wear; these are not likely to be an issue, but more attention is paid to them here than at other tracks. Engine The day to night schedule makes ambient conditions vary significantly and grip levels, tyre warm up and air pressure will change. The engine needs to respond to this new set of parameters, so careful engine management and flexibility is crucial. Tyres The consecutive allocation of the medium and soft compound Pirelli tyres should not present too many issues, with both tyres likely to suit the circuit – opening up the potential strategy permutations.

remaining corners around the track can all use less than that required for this corner. Turn 5 One of the bigger braking demands on the circuit; down from around 300kph. Turn 7: A second gear corner taken at around 70kph, strong engine pickup is vital out of Turn 7 for a good entry onto the circuits’ longest straight. Turns 8 – 9 Arriving at the end of one of the longest straights in Formula 1 – with maximum speeds of around 320kph – heavy braking down to second gear and around 80kph is required for Turns 8 – 9. The kerbs are used aggressively through this combination, so a soft car is beneficial.

Our proud platinum partners

THE CIRCUIT Turn 1 The first corner is medium speed – taken at around 130kph – leading into the high speed Turns 2 + 3; both of which should be flat out in qualifying and only giving the drivers something to think about when they are on heavy fuel loads. Turn 2 A defining corner for setup. You need sufficient front wing to eradicate highspeed understeer here, which defines how much front wing is used overall as the

Approaching Turn 11 Another long straight with top speeds in excess of 300kph leads into a second heavy braking zone for Turn 11. The Turn 11 – 13 sequence requires good change of direction from the car. ™

All-In-One Security

Turns 11 – 21 The final sector is all very low-speed with a lot of second gear corners; reminiscent of a street course. Seeing the cars dive under the brightly lit Yas hotel is one of the greatest spectacles of the year.

Round 17 - Abu Dhabi I Bagman

12

The Bagman says...

H

e may have won the last six races, secured a fourth world title and won two Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, but the Yas Marina hasn’t been too kind to Sebastian Vettel in recent years. Formula 1’s form man won the first two iterations of the event but has encountered trouble on his most recent two visits. A puncture forced him into retirement in 2011 and last year he was excluded from qualifying and forced to race from the back after failing to pass fuel requirements. His recent bad luck at the venue and with the world title sewn up, there is a good chance we could see a new face on the top step of the podium. However, the new fourtime world champion is fan of stats and records, so you can bet he will continue to push hard.

There is certainly still plenty to play for with second place still up for grabs in both the Drivers‘ and Constructors‘ championships. Just 28 points separates Mercedes (2nd), Ferrari (3rd) and Lotus (4th) in the standings. Lotus are one of three teams fighting to finish behind Red Bull in the Constructors’ Championship and on paper they are the form team. They also have good memories of Abu Dhabi after Kimi Raikkonen notched up the team’s first win as Lotus Renault last year. Fast forward 12 months and Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean are still battling for podiums with the latter on a streak of three consecutive rostrum finishes. His last saw the Frenchman battle from 17th to finish third in India last week. Raikkonen is also challenging to finish the year as the runner up in the title race so both drivers will be considered contenders this weekend.

Mark Webber is due some good fortune and has been knocking on the door of victories in both India and Japan. If his car can avoid reliability issues he could certainly force himself into the mix, as he bids to pick up his first win of 2013. Mercedes returned to the podium last weekend with Nico Rosberg finishing second. His team are also pushing to finish second in the constructors and team mate Lewis Hamilton has already conquered Abu Dhabi once his career back in 2011. Ferrari showed flashes of pace in India too with Felipe Massa out performing Fernando Alonso to finish fourth. Without a podium in three races, the Maranello team will be eager to bounce back this week to keep their hopes of finishing second intact. Meanwhile Force India could be an outside bet for a top 10 after both Paul Di Resta and Adrian Sutil both finished in the points in India.
