Hamilton v Rosberg: The Decider

A

fter a season of heated rivalry the battle for the world championship comes down to the wire at the season ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this weekend. Having dominated the year, the world is set for another instalment of the enthralling duel between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg as they battle for the world championship. The pair have been locked in a rivalry which has boiled over at times this year, providing plenty of intrigue and entertainment in a season where Mercedes has proved difficult to beat. Hamilton heads into the race with a 17-point lead but the controversial introduction of the double points rule means he will still need to finish third if Rosberg wins the race to scoop a second title. After breaking Hamilton’s run of five consecutive wins in Brazil, Rosberg’s title hopes are very much alive ensuring there could easily be another twist in the tale of the 2014 season. One thing that is for certain is the tension levels inside the Mercedes garage are set to reach breaking point in what will be a pressure filled title decider.

www.speedcafe.com

While the title battle will take centre stage, there are plenty of subplots this weekend headlined by Caterham F1’s rebirth. After being plunged into administration following an ownership dispute, the Leafield-based squad has successfully raised almost £2 Million($4 Million AUD) to compete in the final round through an ambitious crowdfunding project. After missing the last two races, administrators are hoping the appearance will help find a new buyer to save the team from following in the footsteps of Marussia, who folded earlier this month.

Duel in the Desert: Hamilton and Rosberg poised for title showdown I t has been reminiscent of a Hollywood script. Two childhood friends, two teammates torn apart by the lure of a Formula 1 world championship. This weekend Yas Marina is set to provide the location for the final chapter of the Lewis Hamilton v Nico Rosberg rivalry which is worthy of a place among F1’s greatest title battles. At the start of the year all the focus surrounding F1 was on the radical introduction of quieter hybrid power units that perceived by many have ruined the sport. However, 18 races on and much of that talk has been eclipsed by a truly gripping title battle, producing drama, acrimony and great racing from two protagonists desperate for glory. After a strong pre-season, Hamilton was fully aware that this was a real chance to stake a claim for a second world title to prove he belongs among the sport’s greatest drivers. Likewise in the opposite corner Rosberg came into the season with the reputation

www.speedcafe.com

of a driver more than capable of winning races, but yet to prove he is of world champion material. The two drivers coupled with a strong car was always set to produce fireworks but few predicted just how fierce the rivalry would become. Having grown up together during their karting days, it seemed likely the relationship would become strained under the pressure of performing at the highest level. The warning signs first appeared in Bahrain where the pair produced a breathtaking dice for the victory which was won by Hamilton. Although, Rosberg had used a banned engine mode while attacking the Brit on the track which brought about the first crack in the relationship. In Spain, Hamilton pipped his teammate to victory once again but this time he had used the same engine mode to defend from Rosberg in the closing stages upsetting the German. However, at Monaco the relationship broke down when Rosberg made a mistake

in the dying moments of qualifying which brought out the yellow flags, a move Hamilton, who was denied pole position, thought was a deliberate act to sabotage his chances. Rosberg went on to win while Hamilton declared their friendship was over. But worse was to come when the pair collided on track at Belgium during the opening lap while fighting for the lead. Rosberg survived the clash to finish second, while Hamilton was forced into a retirement, leaving him 29 points adrift of his rival. Since Spa the fireworks have been dampened somewhat but the rivalry has continued to simmer developing into a mental battle. Hamilton has edged the tussle recording five wins from the last six races to move into a 17 point lead ahead of this weekend’s Abu Dhabi finale. It has been a season full of twists and turns with the pair both enjoying spells with a comfortable championship lead, but the duel in the desert at Yas Marina will emerge as the true test. With 10 race wins to his name this year, Hamilton heads into the pressure filled

finale as the favourite but the introduction of double points means he cannot afford to relax either. Although a second place finish will be enough for him to claim the title even if Rosberg wins the race.

The pair go head-to-head for victory producing a sequence of breathtaking passing moves before Hamilton claims the win. Although, Rosberg had used an banned engine mode to attack Hamilton.

Spain

After three consecutive wins Hamilton pipped Rosberg to the victory but this time the Brit had used the banned engine mode used by Rosberg in Bahrain to defend his position.

Monaco

Rosberg makes a mistake at the Mirabeau in qualifying forcing Hamilton to abandon his effort to scoop pole. The Brit is adamant the mistake was a deliberate ploy to stop him from securing pole. Rosberg wins the race from pole and takes the lead in the championship. Hamilton refused to acknowledge Rosberg on the podium ad declared they were no longer friends.

Hungary

With the pressure of having not won a world championship since 2008 on his shoulders, the Brit is confident he can deliver. “People talk about how long it’s been since I won the title - but I honestly feel like I’m fighting for my first World Championship all over again,” said The rivalry reared its head once again in Hungary when Hamilton. the pair became locked in “Sure, I’m older and maybe a little bit a battle for the race win wiser than I was back then. Despite the Safety Car, which was deployed for a crash caused by Sergio Perez, Raikkonen held on to take the win by just eight tenths of a second from a hard charging Alonso. Red Bull Racing’s Sebastian Vettel filled the final place on the podium ahead of McLaren’s Jenson Button and the Williams of Pastor Maldonado.

high speed content. Aside from Turns One to Four, the majority of the 21 corner lap comprises low-speed corners and straights. One surprising result of the track layout is the lack of overtaking, as demonstrated particularly prominently during the titledeciding race in 2010. Although there is an extremely long straight between Turns Seven and Eight, speed onto and along that straight is entirely dependent on being able to stay close to the car in front through the preceding low-speed, low grip grandstand section. The 2014 breed of cars have proven to be easier to follow than their predecessors, with overtaking more prevalent that seen in recent years. However, making a pass will still be far from an easy task around this particular circuit.

Although the 2014 compounds are, as srentrap munitalp duorp ruaO guide, around half a step harder than

their predecessors, this season could well see a three stop race in Abu Dhabi. As demonstrated in Brazil, this can lead to differing strategy calls, multiple changes of position and the potential for plenty of entertaining battles throughout the field. Fuel Consumption Abu Dhabi lies towards the upper end of the scale in terms of fuel consumption. However, there have yet to be notable dramas at any circuit from a fuel perspective - and there have been a number where this should be more of a factor than at the Yas Marina. The drivers have coped impressively well with restrictions on fuel

This is one of a growing number of races which take place going into dusk, resulting in significant variations in track temperature between sessions across the weekend. Whereas, at a more regular event, ambient and track temperatures may fluctuate by between five and ten degrees, the shift in Abu Dhabi is far greater. This can affect track performance by over half a second per lap which, while not of concern, is a factor which must be accounted for in an appropriate manner to ensure that a team does not lose its way on setup. An overheating problem in P1, for example, will not be as prominent during P2. Over-compensating for this would therefore risk taking the wrong path in terms of balance. Teams will have Singapore and Bahrain in particular to draw from in terms of prior experience of this phenomenon, however it is certainly a noteworthy consideration.
