Round 17 - India I Introduction
Into the unknown The Formula One World Championship will truly head into the unknown this weekend with the first running of the Indian Grand Prix.
INDIA
While Formula One Management has made positive noises in the past about Indian interest in Formula One, the way the event is supported by the local population will be a far greater indicator of the sport’s acceptance than the traditionally misleading television audience numbers.
EDITOR: Stefan Bartholomaeus PRODUCTION:
Predictably, the build-up has not been without its hurdles, and the teams won’t be expecting the circuit and its periphery buildings to be quite as polished as the facilities experienced during the category’s first visits to the likes of China and the United Arab Emirates.
Stefan Bartholomaeus SALES/MARKETING: Leisa Emberson
The importance of India’s growing economy to Formula One is likely to ensure that the event is a long-term success however, regardless of any teething problems.
IMAGES: Scuderia Ferrari Red Bull Racing
It almost goes without saying that the circuit itself is a Hermann Tilke creation. The Austrian’s design company has been responsible for the creation of eight circuits on the 2011 championship calendar, with few of those rated all that highly by the drivers, teams or spectators alike.
Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Mercedes GP Lotus Renault GP Virgin Racing Hispania Racing Team
As detailed in this Race Guide’s cover story, the Buddh circuit is expected to be far from dull, with an array of elevation changes and at least two strong passing opportunities on the menu.
PARTNERS: Castrol EDGE, IRWIN Tools, Jack Daniel’s, Orrcon Steel, Pirtek, Vodafone, HDT, Norton 360, Toshiba, Armor All
Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull Racing have already wrapped up both championship titles, but McLaren’s improved pace in Korea points to an entertaining final few races.

Round 17 - India I Cover Story
F1’s newest
What to expect from India’s F
ormula One will finally make its move into the world’s second most populous country this weekend with the inaugural running of the Indian Grand Prix. Despite a series of false starts that has seen two date changes and a location switch since Bernie Ecclestone first trumpeted a deal to race in India some four years ago, the event represents an opportunity for the country to redeem itself following the troubled Commonwealth Games it hosted last year. While Vijay Mallya’s Force India squad will be keen to garner the majority of the local support, Narrain Karthikeyan will be the sole local driver on the grid. The 34-year-old will step back into a one-off race drive with Hispania, replacing Italian Tonio Liuzzi, and says the opportunity to compete in a home Grand Prix is a dream come true. “Driving in front of the home crowd cheering on is going to be a surreal experience - a once in a lifetime experience and I feel extremely fortunate,” says Karthikeyan, whose previous racing experience includes
driving under India’s sporting colours in the now defunct A1GP series. “There is a huge buzz around the Grand Prix already and I’m sure that it’ll be a resounding success that will motivate more youngsters towards the sport and give us the future F1 drivers. Making it into F1 at the time I did was a seriously uphill task and the thought of being able to compete in the inaugural Indian GP was non-existent. But it is finally here and I’ll be on the grid. “It is going to be one of the most challenging circuits on the calendar. There are points at which, if you’re in an F1 car, you will see nothing but the sky. The layout itself is going to put tremendous energy through the tyres and the strategy will play a key role in the final result.” Simulators have been worked overtime in the lead-up to the race, with teams and drivers eager to understand as much about the circuit as possible before arriving during race week. Having seen a host of new circuits join the championship since making his Formula One debut with McLaren in 1989, Team
Lotus chief technical officer Mike Gascoyne is well placed to give his early impressions of the Buddh International Circuit. “From a technical perspective the track looks like quite a few of the modern era F1 circuits, with a mix of high and medium speed corners and a long straight with a tight turn at the end at T4, which I am sure will create decent overtaking opportunities,” says Gascoyne. “It looks like there will be multiple lines for the drivers to take into that corner, as well as into T3 leading onto the straight, so I think we will see a lot of action onto and out of that section. “Turns 10, 11 and 12 also look like they present the drivers with a bit of a challenge – they combine to make a long right that will be hard on the front left tyre and in layout it is akin to T8 in Turkey, but instead of being flat throughout it will need the drivers to go in hard on the throttle, come off the power into the first apex and then get back on through the middle section and out onto the run to T13. “The next couple of turns are a little fiddly, but we might also see some overtaking into the
9
playground
Buddh circuit
final corner, T16, as it is a tight right leading onto the start finish straight after a pretty quick T15 which leads straight into T16.” As it has all season, the degradation rate of the Pirelli tyres will play a key role in the outcome of the race. The lead-up to the recent Korean Grand Prix was dominated by fears of extreme tyre wear due to the circuit not having been used since the inaugural race at the Yeongam circuit 12 months prior.
While the track ‘rubbered-in’ significantly enough during practice and qualifying to ensure a two-stop race, Gascoyne says that predicting tyre wear on the Buddh circuit prior to the event is highly difficult. “The tyres have probably been the single most important factor in upping the entertainment factor this season, but we will not know until Friday practice is completed just how they will perform in India,” he says. “New tracks obviously lack basic grip until any meaningful running has been
completed on them, and I am sure the Buddh circuit will be the same. “Everyone up and down the pitlane will be in the same situation, so we will all be working hard on Friday to gather as much data as we can and give ourselves as good a shot at qualifying as we can, and at maintaining the race pace we showed in the last two Grands Prix. “Whatever happens I am sure it will be a great weekend and one that will show the world just how well India can put on a global sporting spectacle.”

A one-three finish in the Korean Grand Prix wrapped up a second consecutive Constructors Championship crown for Red Bull Racing. Ironically, Korea marked the first time all season that the team had been beaten to pole position, while the race exposed the RB7’s traction and top speed weaknesses. Despite having both titles in the bag, Team designer Adrian Newey has vowed to continue to develop the car over the rest of the season, which at worst should leave the Red Bull on-par with the McLaren. Vettel is once again the favourite to win this weekend, but it is unlikely to be eay. Red Bull Racing

THE BAGMAN’S SAY McLaren should be well in the hunt for its fifth victory of the season this weekend, following the positives steps made by the MP4-26 in Korea. The team brought a new rear wing to the KIC - noticeably improving the DRS effect on the straights. This helped its drivers in both qualifying (where the DRS can be used at any time) and the race (where Lewis Hamilton spent much of his time using the DRS to defend from Mark Webber). The caution Hamilton showed on the opening lap in Korea may have cost him the lead, but it proved just how determined the Briton is to finish the year with podium finishes. Vodafone McLaren Mercedes

NICO ROSBERG
Mercedes has been the talk of the paddock since the last race in Korea, with revelations of the team’s radical new front-wing starting to emerge. Applying the now-banned F-Duct concept of 2010, it is understood that Mercedes has designed a front-wing that can be stalled at high-speed - reducing downforce/drag and allowing the cars to run a lower static ride-height. Nico Rosberg was highly competitive in the opening stints in Korea, but could manage just eighth by the flag, while Michael Schumacher was taken out by Vitaly Petrov while also threatening for points. Expect the Mercedes duo to be even closer to the back of the top six this weekend. Mercedes GP Petronas F1 Team

Like Renault, Williams enters this weekend in a difficult position with Pastor Maldonado having earned a fiveplace grid penalty for hitting a pit-entry bollard in Korea. Rubens Barrichello meanwhile has not scored points since the rain-affected Canadian Grand Prix in June, and is facing the ever-increasing likelihood that 2011 will be his last season in Formula One. There is nothing to suggest that this team can turn around their difficult season this weekend. Paul di Resta
Adrian Sutil and Paul di Resta are likely to be the most over-worked drivers in the leadup to the Indian Grand Prix, despite neither driver hailing from the emerging nation. Media commitments aside, Force India’s technical package has made significant steps forward in recent races, and should see the duo in with a strong chance of scoring more points this weekend. While unlikely to have short-term benefits, the team has received a sizeable cash injection thanks to local conglomerate Sahara India Pariwar buying 42.5 percent of the team. As was the case in Korea, test driver Nico Hulkenberg will sit out practice to ensure the race drivers are afforded maximum track time. Force India

Just one week after introducing a major upgrade package in Japan, the Swiss team’s cars struggled on the Korea International Circuit’s low-grip layout. While the precise nature of the Indian Grand Prix venue’s surface is not yet known, returning to the points looks to be a difficult task. Encouragingly for next season, the team has announced that the highly respected William Toet is soon to return to the role of head of aerodynamics, which he previously held between 2006 and 2009. Jaime Alguersuari
Toro Rosso’s strong second half of the season continued in Korea, with both Jaime Alguersuari and Sebastien Buemi finishing in the top 10. The Spaniard was particularly impressive, taking seventh from Nico Rosberg late in the race to move past Paul di Resta for 13th in the Drivers’ Championship. More importantly, the team is now within just three points of Sauber in the Constructors’, and will be pushing hard to overtake its Swiss rivals in the final races. Look for Toro Rosso to once again asses its latest rear-facing blown exhaust in practice, having run the system on Friday of the last two Grands Prix weekends before abandoning the system prior to the race. Team Lotus have already pulled a surprise heading into the Indian Grand Prix, with Italian Jarno Trulli not being replaced by the squad’s Indian test-driver Karun Chandhok as expected. Trulli was once again comprehensively out-done by team-mate Heikki Kovailainen in Korea, with the latter enjoying a 0.6s advantage in qualifying. Kovalainen all-but equalled the team’s best-ever finish of 13th with a 14th placed run in Korea - crossing the line ahead of the troubled Saubers. The team’s ability to repeat that result is likely to be determined by the fortunes of others. Team Lotus

Hispania has drafted Indian driver Narain Karthikeyan back into its second seat this weekend, leaving Italian journeyman Tonio Liuzzi on the sidelines. While highly unlikely to strengthen the team’s competitive position, Karthikeyan’s appearance will at least guarantee the minnows some local media attention. Daniel Ricciardo meanwhile will have his sights firmly set on the Virgin Racing entries, having beaten Jerome D’Ambrosio in a fair fight in Korea. Simply continuing its run of reliability from Japan and Korea will be a good result from Virgin Racing this weekend.

Realistically, the team only has one Hispania to worry about this weekend with Karthikeyan replacing Liuzzi at the Spanish-owned team.

Twenty-first on the grid remains Timo Glock’s only real target in qualifying, while D’Ambrosio will have his work cut-out to hold off Ricciardo, should the Australian enjoy a more reliable car on Saturday than he did in Korea.
