Driver Reduction System While I don’t pretend to understand what Sebastian Vettel meant exactly when he explained that he “didn’t deliberately” pass Mark Webber in the closing stages of the Malaysian Grand Prix, the Sepang race was another reminder that overtaking is way too easy in modern Formula 1. Granted, Vettel’s pass on Webber was a hard fought manoeuvre that took several corners to pull off, but for the majority of the event, drivers had simply been ranging up on their rivals through the DRS zone that headed into the final corner, and then cruising by through the second DRS zone on the front straight. The DRS is not a new phenomenon and, as is not unusual with change, much of the initial debate about its legitimacy has subsided over time. What stands out, however, is the fact that early concerns that the system is too beneficial for the car behind were dismissed under the premise that it would take time to work out how to strike the right balance with the length of the zones. We’ve now had almost 50 Grand Prix run with DRS active. Shouldn’t someone have worked it out by now? Born out of McLaren’s clever pioneering of the ‘F-Duct’ during the 2010 season, the DRS wasn’t a fundamentally bad idea back when the races lacked action. But with no end in sight to the squishy-tyre induced mayhem that Grand Prix racing has turned into over the last 24 months, it’s time to send DRS packing and at least restore some of the lost art of overtaking.

Cutting through the Bull Red Bull Racing is well and truly under the spotlight as the F1 circus heads to China

S

pats between team-mates and rows over team orders are nothing new in Formula 1, but Red Bull Racing duo Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber took proceedings to a whole new level last time out in Sepang. Vettel’s decision to overtake Webber for the win during the final stint of the Malaysian Grand Prix despite orders to the contrary from team principal Christian Horner have unsurprisingly continued to dominate the Formula 1 news agenda over the three week break between races. Vettel says he’s keen to move on from the incident, but regardless of the result this weekend, a controversy of this magnitude will not blow over too quickly. The German will be doing well if he does not become distracted by continued media

interest in the story in Shanghai. The 25year-old gave a clear indication that he’ll be on the front, foot in China however, by presenting a somewhat indignant position in a pre-event press video.

As central as the drivers have been to the furore, the biggest question to come out of Sepang undoubtedly rests with the team. Just who calls the shots at Red Bull Racing?

“I apologised to the team straight afterwards for putting myself above the team, which I didn’t mean to do,” he explained. “(But) I don’t apologise for winning, I think that’s why people employed me in the first place and why I’m here. I love racing and that’s what I do.” Webber, meanwhile, has been true to his words straight after the Malaysian race, where he said he’d be turning his phone off and heading to Australia for a surf. He won’t be facing the media until the traditional Thursday afternoon pre-event press conference at the circuit.

The fact that the outfit is headed by an eclectic mix of characters, including Red Bull’s founder Dietrich Mateschitz, its appointed F1 team “advisor” Dr Helmut Marko, legendary technical director Adrian Newey and the aforementioned Horner, appears central to the problem. ™

era at Ferrari may not have made the Frenchman the most popular man in the sport, but his command was unquestioned. “If there was a manager with balls, he would have had them switch positions again,” claimed the always outspoken Flavio Briatore, a former manager of Webber, post-Sepang.

“I don’t think (Vettel) undermined Christian’s authority at all because Christian knows exactly what should have happened and didn’t happen,” Ecclestone was quoted as saying in Britain’s The Sun newspaper. “Put yourself in Christian’s position – what should he now do? Did he give orders in the first place and, if he did, how could he then give more orders?”

Amid growing question marks against Horner’s authority at Red Bull Racing, it’s notable that one of those quick to jump to the former racer’s defence was Bernie Ecclestone. The Formula 1 commercial rights has long been an ally of Horner, whose outfit’s departure from the Formula One Teams Association in late 2011 triggered the downfall of that lobby group, playing directly into Ecclestone’s hands.

Red Bull Racing posted a statement to its website in the days following the Malaysian Grand Prix explaining that it would deal with the situation of Vettel’s defiance behind closed doors.

“I don’t apologise for winning” stance. Vettel may only be 25, but he’s already a three-time World Champion. Maybe he’s already playing the role of quasi-team principal, too? The team principals from McLaren (Martin Whitmarsh) and Lotus (Eric Boullier) helped give perspective to the situation following the Sepang race. “You don’t have a choice, you have to sit down and deal with it,” opined Whitmarsh when asked what he’d do if one of his drivers defied orders.

“It’s worth noting that this is not an entirely new situation for us,” the statement read in part.

“The driver is putting himself presumably in breach of contract and the team is bigger than any driver, isn’t it? At any team.

“Each incident has been managed in our own way behind closed doors and this will be no different.”

“With a team having 600-700 people in it, you have really got to remind them. But drivers are competitive things, and it is a challenge.”

The fact that the squad hasn’t given any public hint of a sanction against Vettel sits awkwardly alongside the German’s continued

already had some favours compared to Mark. “It is not easy - but then you have to sit down with the people. The team was thinking about the Constructors’ Championship, which is why they asked Webber and Vettel to keep their positions. “So they need to have a proper discussion about the reasons behind it. “Obviously I understand Seb wants to win, just like Mark, but perhaps already he is thinking about the championship because he knows it is going to be tough. “But as a team principal, except if you favour one driver clearly, you always need to do what is best for the team.” The phrase ‘team-mate’ has always been a bit of a misnomer in Formula 1, but not until Red Bull came along had the very concept of ‘team’ been put into question. Let’s see if the characteristically brilliant raw pace of the Red Bulls can heal all wounds in China.

THE CAR Rear wing Slightly less downforce than in Sepang and Albert Park in deference to the opportunities for overtaking provided by the two straights in Shangai. Brakes Shanghai is not a severe circuit for brakes. There are some heavy braking zones of up to 5G of deceleration – Turn 1 into 2, Turns 6, 11 and 14 but they are well spread over a lap giving time for the discs and pads to cool. Suspension Kerbs are low meaning that the right height can be lower than would otherwise be necessary. Bumpy braking zone into turn one tests the car’s damping capabilities. The set-up needs to encourage good change of direction from the car at both high speeds (Turns 7-8) and low speeds (Turns 2-3 and 9-10). Tyres Pirelli’s P Zero White medium and P Zero Yellow soft tyres will be nominated. The asphalt is not especially aggressive and temperatures are not particularly high, so there will not be a lot of degradation. There are some significant lateral forces on the car in Turns 1, 8 and 13. Front Wing Front wing gives slightly less load than at

the previous two circuits. Engine Shanghai is about in the middle of the table for the stresses it puts on engines. There is one very long straight where the engine is pushed to its most severe usage, but the rest of the circuit features 16 medium to low corners meaning the engine is used at relatively lower revs for the rest of the lap. The straight between Turns 13 and 14 gives Shanghai the longest straight on the F1 calendar. Gear ratios are therefore carefully calculated to trade off acceleration and maximum speed taking account of aero set-up, engine power, weather, KERS and DRS usage. Short ratios favour acceleration; a longer top gear ratio permits higher maximum speed.

The circuit layout has two straights and a mix of corners, from tight hairpins to flowing curves and radial turns. The constant changes of direction mean correct engine mapping is extremely important to give the drive out of the corners. Turns 12 and 13, the radial corner that leads onto the longest straight on the circuit, demand particular attention. Turns 1-2 These can be bumpy which unsettles the car. This makes braking difficult in the entry phase of the first corner. Turn 1 leads

Turn 13 Turn 13 is banked providing an interesting challenge for the drivers. Turn 14 One of the most high-speed features of the season, the cars have to slow for turn 14 at the end of the long straight. Although this is one of a few heavy braking areas around the track, these are well spread over a lap so the brakes have sufficient time to cool – it’s not a harsh track on braking.

T

here was little splitting Red Bull, Ferrari Lotus and Mercedes over the first two events of the 2013 season, and all indicators point towards these four teams being the ones to beat this weekend. Which one of the four will triumph in China may end up depending on track conditions as much as anything. Mercedes’ triumph in Shanghai last year

was a case in point, with Nico Rosberg streaking into the distance as his W03 lapped up the cool track. Going by what we saw in Australia and Malaysia, Red Bull is likely to have the outright fastest car in Shanghai, especially if there is reasonable temperature. The Chinese layout is very hard on front tyres, however, which could bring the rubber-

friendly Lotus entries right into the mix. Further back, McLaren showed signs of improvement in Malaysia but is still some way from the pace. Don’t expect miracles from the Woking outfit here. Nico Hulkenberg’s Sauber and the two Force Indias will ensure that Jenson Button will have to work hard in order to squeak into the top 10 on Sunday.
