Changes aplenty
N
ew rules, new drivers, new owners, new partnerships - it’s all happening in Formula One as the year’s halfway point approaches.
While the full implementation of the FIA’s ban on off-throttle blown diffusers has dominated talk at the front of the field, many Australian fans will be keeping a close eye on the tail of the pack this weekend. For the first time in 34 years two Australians will share the Formula One grid, with 22-year-old Western Australian Daniel Ricciardo preparing to line-up for his maiden race in motorsport’s premier league with Hispania. The Spanish squad has undergone an ownership change since Valencia’s European Grand Prix (as detailed in the cover story to this Race Guide), and has been the somewhat surprise recipient of Red Bull protégé Ricciardo. While shuffling Ricciardo back into the ride formally filled by Indian Narain Karthikeyen is a disappointing option compared to the much talked of move into a Toro Rosso race drive, Red Bull’s latest manoeuvring has almost assured Ricciardo of a full-time seat in Formula One next season - provided he does the job in the coming races.
GUEST COLUMNIST: Daryl Beattie
This year’s British Grand Prix is also a significant one in the history of the prestigious race, as it marks the first time that the new ‘Arena’ track layout will be used with its new pit facility.

COVER STORY
Minnow Revolution Hispania, Virgin Racing and Team Lotus look to step it up a level from this weekend’s British Grand Prix
W
hile Red Bull, McLaren
and Ferrari continue to battle it out at the front of the Formula One pack, the tail end of the grid has undergone a significant shake-up heading into the weekend’s British Grand Prix. The much maligned Hispania Racing Team, which failed to qualify either of its cars at Albert Park’s 2011 season opener, heads to Silverstone this weekend with a new driver and a new owner. Just days after speaking of his pride at the prospect of Red Bull placing its 22-yearold Australian test driver Daniel Ricciardo at HRT for the remainder of the season, team owner Jose Ramon Carabante off-loaded his equity in the squad to Spanish investment group Thesan Capital. “The Thesan Capital team, who consider the acquisition of Hispania Racing as an opportunity to enter a sector with great prospects of growing, will work with the aim of strengthening the strategic management of the group,” read a team statement
6
that also promised to make the team “more Spanish” in the coming seasons. Although Ricciardo’s placement at HRT has come under question (see Opinion by Daryl Beattie on page 13 of this guide), the Formula Renault 3.5 pilot says joining countryman Mark Webber on the grid at Silverstone will be a special moment. “It’s a dream come true for me - for the first time on an F1 starting grid” said Ricciardo.
“I had to pinch myself a couple of times to be sure that it’s real. I’m excited and can hardly wait to drive at Silverstone. It’s a new challenge, a new experience, a new team, but I’m ready and will give of my best in any event.” At fellow second year squad Virgin Racing, a technical partnership with McLaren has been revealed as the successor to an unsuccessful tie-up with Wirth Research.
Round 9 – Silverstone
Use of McLaren’s state of the art wind tunnel and simulators will come as part of the deal, while the team has also purchased the remnants of the Wirth Racing Technologies Formula 1 business - a move that Virgin Racing CEO Andy Webb says will enable an short-term jump in performance. “When we undertook our detailed review of the team in the first half of 2011, it was clear that our bold ambitions for the future would need to
be matched with some equally bold steps towards achieving them,” said Webb. “I am delighted that in a relatively short space of time we are now in the fantastic position of being able to make these two very important announcements, which will enable us to make some dramatic strides forward with immediate effect. “Our acquisition of the WRT Formula 1 business ensures continuity of technical infrastructure for the period
ahead, which means that the transition to working with our new technical partner can begin immediately and is not frustrated by logistical considerations.” With Team Lotus, the other squad to make its debut in 2010, set to run with Caterham and GE branding for the first time at Silverstone, it’s all change at the back of the grid. Which of the three teams will still be at the back come Silverstone 2012 is an interesting question to ponder.

OPINION by DARYL BEATTIE
Ricciardo reservations
T
he big story for Australian Formula One fans heading into the 2011 British Grand Prix is the impending Formula One race debut of Daniel Ricciardo.
different to what we’ve seen in recent races. I think Adrian Newey and the Red Bull team are smart enough to find their way around it, and they’ve known this has been coming for quite a while.
Having been heavily tipped to move into one of the Toro Rosso race drivers during the season, the fact that the West Australian will line-up in a HRT this weekend is a bit of a surprise.
I can’t help but feel that McLaren were really the odd ones out in Valencia. They’d been finding some momentum, along with Ferrari, in recent races, but in Valencia they really weren’t in the hunt at all. We know that Red Bull ran a Silverstone style package on Friday there, and Vettel was a fair way off the pace. There’s a chance that McLaren ‘robbed Peter to pay Paul’ by running more of a Silverstone-type package in Valencia, to gather data, because Britain is where they really want to have a better result.
In some ways it is nice for him to be doing race miles, but when a car is six seconds a lap off the pace and lapped two or three times during the races, then I’m not convinced that it’s a great thing for Daniel’s career. Really all I would say is that I hope this isn’t a political thing that hurts his development. I hope it’s not politics behind the scenes that’s pushing Ricciardo back to HRT until Alguersuari and Buemi have finished the year. To me it’s too political, I smell a rat, and I just hope Ricciardo’s not getting pushed back because someone’s got money. That’s part of the world now, but I didn’t race in that era where you brought money to get a better ride over someone who’s got talent. The only yardstick he’ll have will be his team-mate, and Tonio Liuzzi carries a bit of credibility around the Formula One paddock based on his sheer talent, so it’ll be interesting to see how that goes. For us, it’s really exciting to have two Australians on the grid. Ricciardo speaks well and he’s a bit cheeky. We speak so much about people having the ability to do well on track, but Daniel is great with the television as well. I always point to guys like Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden who are great personalities, and I think Daniel has a bit of that in him. So I really hope he does end up slotting in where Mark (Webber) is eventually.
A
t the front of the field, all the talk heading into Silverstone is about how the new diffuser rules will affect the pecking order. It’s very hard to tell at this stage how it will pan out, but like in any category, the cream always rises to the top, so I don’t see it being much
I feel like it’s still going to be Red Bull, with McLaren and Ferrari not far behind. The exact effect that the rules will have for qualifying is very hard to say. This year marks the second running of the British Grand Prix on the new Silverstone layout, and the first to use the new pit facilities. It’s difficult when they change a circuit, because I’ve seen over the years great circuits, like Hockenheim, chopped up to the extent that they’ll never be the same. At Silverstone I think they’ve done a good job it still has fast turns and a good flow, and the new pit facilities are amazing. I was speaking to the Ducati guys about it, and they were saying its like having one bike in a house! I’ve been lucky enough to go to Silverstone for the F1 several times, and it’s a great atmosphere, the English just love it. It’s a must go to if you’re a Formula One fan.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY While m any are predicting a closer battle for pole position at Silverstone thanks to the new blown diffuser rules, Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull Racing will still enter the weekend as favourites for P1 on the grid and the podium. The 23-year-old German was unflappable last time out in Valencia, controlling the pace despite the best efforts of Alonso and Webber. The Australian will see the rule changes as an opportunity to come to terms with his team-mate for the first time this season. A repeat of last year’s victory is far from out of the question.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Valencia may have seen McLaren take a backwards step relative to Red Bull and Ferrari, but the Woking based squad is sure to have something extra up its sleave for the British Grand Prix. While Hamilton won his home race in 2008, Button has yet to make the podium at Silverstone - a record the 2009 World Champion will be out to set straight. The Mercedes KERS system will put Red Bull under plenty of pressure if he Austrian squad cannot get its own system working for the entire Grand Prix. Hamilton appears the most likely to challenge Red Bull this weekend.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Revised diffuser regulations or not, Silverstone will be a big test for Ferrari. While the team has undoubtedly made progress over recent races, one can’t help but feel that the brilliance of Fernando Alonso made up for some of the F150th Italia’s aerodynamic shortfall on the less downforce-dependent Monaco, Montreal and Valencia layouts. Pirelli’s choice to bring the hard compound tyres to Silverstone will also hurt the Italian squad, and could render Alonso a podium contender, rather than a race winning threat.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY After making significant progress in the early season races, Mercedes GP struggled in Valencia, and is unlikely to spring a major surprise this weekend. Based just down the road from Silverstone in Brackley, the lack of outright qualifying speed and high tyre degradation evident in Monaco and Valencia may be exposed again on the high-speed British circuit. Rosberg has been linked to various leading teams in recent weeks, but is insisting that he’ll stick it out with Mercedes. The W02 remains a fair way away from the race winning package the young German craves however. MERCEDES GP PETRONAS F1 TEAM

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Renault will be keen to get back to a high speed layout after struggling to make Q3 across the Monaco, Montreal and Valencia weekends. The effect that the new diffuser rules will have on the R31’s forward facing exhaust package is the big question, with many expecting the Renault to lose the most downforce out of any car in the field. The team insists that the main issue related to the new rules will be maintaining braking stability however, and that the Renault system will actually be the least affected. Beating Mercedes will certainly be the target, and having two cars in the top 10 by race end is achievable..

THE BAGMAN’S SAY With Barrichello and Maldonado sitting 15th and 24th respectively in the championship standings, it’s little wonder that the Grove-based squad is counting down the days until 2012. The team’s tumultuous year has included a public float of the company, a major engineering restructure, and now an announcement of a switch from Cosworth to Renault engines for next season. With its current engine not able to take advantage of diffuser ‘hot blowing,’ the new rule package could allow Barichello to take the team’s third points finish of the season this weekend.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Another team to be based within a stone’s throw of the Silverstone circuit, Force India will look to build on a solid weekend in Valencia, where Adrian Sutil returned the squad to the points for the first time since Malaysia. While the British Grand Prix will be a special weekend for Scottish rookie Paul di Resta, the reigning DTM champion has precious little experience of the Northamptonshire circuit - with just one race start here (in Formula Renault) to his name. Both drivers will be hoping that the new rules will allow the team to regain some of the ground lost to Renault and Mercedes since the season’s opening races.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Despite lacklustre qualifying and race performances in Valencia - including Kobayashi’s first non-points finish since being disqualified at Albert Park - Sauber’s drivers head to Silverstone full of confidence. The Japanese scored his best result of the season here last year, while Formula One rookie Perez has proven a winner at Silverstone in Formula 3 and GP2. Pirelli’s selection of the hard compound tyre may hurt the Swiss squad, especially if a cool ambient temperature puts a premium on tyre warm-up. With Kobayashi’s aggressive style, points can be achieved no matter what the grid position.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY The immediate threat to Buemi and Alguersuari, Daniel Ricciardo, may be temporarily out of sight and out of might at Hispania, but the battle between the Toro Rosso team-mates is likely to be as intense as ever this weekend at Silverstone. With the Spaniard taking consecutive eighth place finishes in Montreal and Valencia, the pair now sit on eight points each after eight races. Having been knocked out in Q1 multiple times this year, Alguersuari’s recent performances have been boosted by rain (Montreal) and strategy (Valencia), so there remains plenty to prove.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Team principal Tony Fernandes has earmarked the 2011 British Grand Prix as a big weekend for the second-year squad. The T128s will race with the logos of new partners GE and Caterham cars for the first time, while the banning of hot blown diffusers - a practice not seen on the Lotus entries - may bring the team slightly closer to the Force India/Toro Rosso/Williams battle. The current reliability across the Formula One field which saw every car finish in Valencia is likely to again dash any hopes of a surprise maiden points finish for the team this weekend though.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY As detailed in the cover story of this Formula One Race Guide, Hispania enters this weekend with new owners and a new driver line-up. The battle between Daniel Ricciardo and the highly experienced Tonio Liuzzi will be one to watch. The Italian remains highly rated by many in the paddock, despite lacklustre stints at Toro Rosso and Force India prior to his appointment at HRT. The team’s two cars ran reliably in Valencia - a feat that, if repeated, will provide Ricciardo with the race miles he craves. Liuzzi should prove too strong for the Aussie straight up however..

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Like Hispania, there are plenty of changes on the horizon for Virgin Racing, as the Russian-owned cellar-dweller aims to remove itself from the foot of the Constructors Championship. While the technical partnership with McLaren may take some time to yield results, the team’s morale will have received a much needed boost courtesy of the news. Lead driver Timo Glock has been particularly vocal of the team’s failings as it has slipped into the clutches of HRT over the first half of the season, and now has some reason to be optimistic heading into the remainder of his second year with the team.
