rom the moment Marcos Ambrose announced a return to V8 Supercars the hype surrounding the former champion’s homecoming has been progressively building. This weekend the talking stops and the attention turns to the NRMA Sydney 500 where Ambrose will make his first start in

Australia’s premier category for nine years, as a wildcard precursor to a 2015 full-time return. The Tasmanian’s return after taking on America’s fiercely fought NASCAR Sprint Cup is the result of a new partnership between Dick Johnson Racing and American giant Team Penske, due to officially begin next year.

While the alliance between Penske and DJR has instigated Ambrose’s full-time V8 Supercars return, it is clear the 38-year-old is genuinely driven to succeed in his new challenge back in Australia. For Ambrose, he has nothing to prove in V8 Supercars and on a global stage. Ever since he made his debut in the series in 2001 it was clear he possessed a star

quality only found in few drivers. In just five years, he racked up two championships in 2003 and 2004, 28 race wins and finished on the podium in almost half of his 137 race starts for Stone Brothers Racing. He even had the audacity to claim pole position on his Bathurst 1000 debut in 2001. His quality shone through in the cut throat world of NASCAR too with the Australian visiting the Sprint Cup victory lane on two occasions while recording 46 Top 10 finishes. Although he will treat this weekend's Sydney 500 wildcard run as part of his preparations for a full-time return next season, he will be desperate to pick up where he left off at the end of 2005. However, the extent of the challenge ahead should not be underestimated having never raced a current generation V8 Supercar or competed at Sydney’s Olympic Park circuit. With just a ride day at Lakeside and two test days at Queensland Raceway under his belt in the Xbox backed DJR Ford Falcon, he is justifiably playing down his chances. “I’m just looking forward to getting to Homebush,” Ambrose told Speedcafe,com. “It’s going to be in the deep end there for sure. It’s a new track for me. “I’ll just have to go there (Sydney) and adapt when I get there and try to learn as quick as I can. “I’m really impressed with what I’ve experienced so far. “I’ve really enjoyed getting to know all the team here at DJR and we’ve been chipping away at getting comfortable

behind the wheel. “Certainly the brake zones were the hardest thing to get dialled in but we’ve got that pretty much sussed now. “It’s been a big effort for this team to build this car up – to stretch the staff to their thinnest level to try and run three cars at Homebush is not going to be easy. “But I think it’s definitely worth it for me as a driver and as a team just getting used to me, and me getting to know the guys.”

Ever since the news of Ambrose’s NRMA Sydney wildcard broke the subject of his performance at the season finale has been a hot topic. While it is difficult to accurately predict just how Ambrose will perform, his peers are of the opinion that it won’t take long for him to hit his stride. Having claimed a record six titles in the last seven years, Australia’s most successful touring car driver, Jamie Whincup, is confident Ambrose will be competitive. The Red Bull Racing driver, who will be

officially crowned the 2014 champion this weekend, says he is looking forward to battling with Ambrose next season. He also expects the former Stone Brothers recruit to instantly overcome the nuances of driving a V8 Supercar and will be quick from the outset. “I think it’s great that Ambrose is racing,” Whincup told Speedcafe.com. “From his perspective, performance wise it’s a big advantage getting a round under your belt before you head into the championship. “It’s fantastic that there may be less eyes on me. The less eyes on me the better. “I’d like to think that I’ve got a bit more experience now and I’m looking forward to competing against him. “I’m looking forward to seeing how he goes.” “He will be quick out of the box. “The car will be fast. He’s driven these cars before and while they are slightly different they are still the same old beast. “He should just pick up where he left off many years ago.” It is an opinion Speedcafe.com readers share following results from a recent Pirtek Poll which showed that more than a third of voters believe Ambrose will finish inside the top 10 this weekend. He has also attracted short odds from bookmakers with Ambrose rated as a $9 chance to claim a race win. Whatever the outcome Ambrose will certainly announce his return to V8 Supercars offering a glimpse into the very near future.

While Jamie Whincup is champion elect for 2014, the fight for second will be raging at the Sydney NRMA 500 between Mark Winterbottom, Craig Lowndes and Shane van Gisbergen.

Despite often being labeled a regular championship bridesmaid, Ford’s Winterbottom has only finished runner-up once – back in 2008. However he has been a regular contender and has never finished outside the top five in the final pointscore since joining Ford Performance Racing in 2006. Lowndes – third and 95 points behind Winterbottom – is trying to help Red Bull Racing Australia and Triple Eight achieve the historic feat of its fourth 1-2 championship finish in successive years, which has never before been achieved by a team in 55 years of ATCC/V8SC history. If Lowndes can finish second overall it will be the sixth time in his career he’s finished runner-up (2005, 2006, 2011, 2012, 2013). Van Gisbergen – fourth and 39 points behind Lowndes – could improve upon his best-ever championship result. His previous best was fourth in 2011 with Stone Brothers Racing.

Marcos Ambrose will make his first V8 Supercar Championship appearance in just over nine years at the Sydney NRMA 500.

There are a total of 13 drivers in the Sydney field that have never lined up on a V8 Supercar grid with the two-time champion who has a career total of 28 V8SC race wins, 18 pole positions and 30 podium finishes from 65 round starts between 2001 and 2005. Ambrose will run the #66 on his DJR Falcon, a number which has double meaning. Sydney will be his 66th V8 Supercar Championship round start and #66 is also the number carried to victory in the 1972 Indianapolis 500 by Mark Donohue – the first victory in the famed race for Roger Penske, who becomes a controlling partner in the team next year. Sydney will be the first time Dick Johnson Racing has run three cars in a V8SC round since 2002 at Eastern Creek (Steven Johnson, Paul Radisich and Greg Ritter).

The Sydney NRMA 500 has become the most unpredictable round of the V8 Supercar Championship with an amazing nine different winners in the 10 races held since 2009.

Craig Lowndes is the only repeat winner on the streets of Sydney Olympic Park (2011 Saturday and 2012 Saturday). Fourteen different drivers have claimed the 30 available podium positions in those 10 races. Three times (the Saturday race in 2010, 2011 and 2012) the winner has come from 10th or worse on the grid.

For the first time in its history this year’s Sydney NRMA 500 will consist of three races rather than two.

A pair of 125-kilometre races will be held on Saturday with a 250-kilometre finale on Sunday as part of the new-for-2014 Super Street format also used at the Clipsal 500 and Castrol Townsville 500. Holden is undefeated in V8 Supercar street racing this year with Commodore pilots winning all eight championship races held in Adelaide and at Townsville and the Gold Coast.

The 3.42-kilometre Sydney Olympic Park layout has developed a reputation as the biggest car-killer on the V8 Supercar Championship calendar.

On average, only 71.5 per cent of all cars that start a V8 Supercar race there actually finish and, of those that don’t finish, just over 50 per cent are eliminated by accidents or accident damage. Last year’s Sunday race was the first time a Sydney 500 race had been completed without a car retiring due to an accident or accidentrelated damage.

VIP Petfoods pilot Shane van Gisbergen is the form man on the streets of Sydney Olympic Park.

The Kiwi has finished on the podium in five of the last seven races there since 2010, consisting of four third-places and a win (2013 Sunday). Four of his eight career race wins have come on street circuits (2011 Hamilton, 2013 Adelaide, 2013 Sydney Olympic Park, 2014 Gold Coast).

No Sydney NRMA 500 race has yet been run without the appearance of the Pedders SRT Safety Car at least twice.

The average number of Safety Car appearances per race over the event’s five-year history is 3.4 with the most – five – in the 2010 Saturday race.

The New Generation V8 Supercar has again delivered a wide variety of winners this year with 11 different primary drivers claiming race victories to follow on from the 13 that won in 2013.

Four of the five manufacturers – Holden, Ford, Volvo and Erebus’ Mercedes-Benz E63 AMGs –have claimed wins this year, while fifth manufacturer Nissan’s best showing was second at the prestigious Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000. Seven different teams have claimed victories for 2014.

Three drivers – Dale Wood, Robert Dahlgren and Marcos Ambrose – will be making their first Sydney NRMA 500 start in 2014.

Wood is the only one of the three to have competed at the circuit before – he finished on the podium in 2012 in the Dunlop Series and won the title there last year.

The Dunlop Series concludes at Sydney Olympic Park with Paul Dumbrell champion elect, 304 points in front of Ash Walsh with only 300 available in the final round.

With victory in the last two rounds at Queensland Raceway and Bathurst, Dumbrell is attempting to become the first driver since Andrew Thompson in 2011 to win three Dunlop Series rounds in a row and the first to win four individual races in a row since Jonathon Webb in 2009.

Four-way title fight set to light up Sydney he Australian V8 Ute Racing Series is set for a thrilling four way title decider at this weekend’s season finale at Sydney Olympic Park. With 140 points up for grabs, Kris Walton, David Sieders, Jesse Dixon and Rhys McNally are still in with a chance of being crowned the 2014 ARMOR ALL Drivers Champion. Walton is currently leading the championship on 850 points just 61 points ahead of David Sieders and is searching for his maiden title in only his third year in the series. “I hope its third time lucky, we have a good lead there if we stay out of trouble and around the top ten, we will hopefully take the win,” said Walton. “To get the win for Rentco and Peter’s Motorsport would be a bonus as all the guys have worked so hard and supported me for a long time now. I’d love nothing more than to give them the championship.” Walton’s nearest rival Sieders has often been the bridesmaid in the championship having finished in the top three since 2010. While desperate to go one better this year, the New South Welshman will need to force a mistake from Walton. “Basically I’m going to get out there and charge hard and hopefully Kris will fail and give me a shot at the title,” said Sieders. “It will be a really big weekend for us, we are debuting a new naming rights partner Qualify Me, so it would be great to bring the title home for them as well,” Fresh from his best round result ever at the Gold Coast (2nd overall) and his first pole position, Dixon is an outside shot at the title lying 109 points adrift of Walton. Although his championship chance is somewhat out of his control he still harbours a glimmer of hope. “It’s great to be in the top three and mathematically we can still win, it’s something that’s basically out of our control,” said Dixon. “I can perform as best as I can, but it’s really up to the guys in front, they’d have to crash out in every race. “He’ll (Rhys) will be fighting hard to try and catch us and I have to make sure I finish every race and bag points, it’s not wise to push hard and try and catch the front guys. “I just need a solid weekend to hold third for the championship.” McNally is mathematically in contention for the title but with a 137 point deficit to make up, his chances are slim. “Realistically to win the championship is a bit of a long shot, it’s really the last thing on

our mind, we’re just going to try win each race and put on a good show,” said McNally. “If we win, or manage to get on podium, it will be an awesome bonus.” Although he won the last round on the Gold Coast, two-time and reigning V8 Ute Champion Ryal Harris, and 2011 – 2013 front-runner Nathan Pretty are now both out of the Series battle, however they could still end up with a top three finish overall. Elsewhere, former full-time V8 Supercars driver Tim Blanchard will be an extra addition to the grid behind the wheel of #41 Track Buddy Holden.
