Tense fight looms for Pirtek Enduro Cup decider

amie Whincup remains in the box seat to claim the second annual Pirtek Enduro Cup on the streets of the Gold Coast. Whincup and partner Paul Dumbrell fell agonisingly short of pulling off a miraculous win after qualifying down the back of the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000. After running his E85 tank dry, Whincup coasted to fifth after being passed at Forrest’s Elbow on the final lap. He and the experienced Dumbrell go into the Castrol Edge Gold Coast 600 on top of the standings for the Pirtek Enduro Cup which encompasses the trio of shared driver races - Sandown, Bathurst and the Gold Coast. The Red Bull duo sit on 522 points, just 30 clear of Bathurst bolters Chaz Mostert and Paul Morris. The Holden Racing Team’s James Courtney and Greg Murphy are on 408. Craig Lowndes, with new co-driver Steve Richards is on 396 points in fourth as he tries to claim the unique trophy in consecutive years after being

helped last year by Warren Luff. With a total of 300 points on offer, mathematically the top 15 remain in contention, which bodes well for an unpredictable battle for the second Pirtek Enduro Cup. The Surfers Paradise track is notoriously punishing and with the twin 300km (102 laps) races the chance of a surprise result looms large.

ollowing a breathtaking Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, the action ramps up once again with the punishing Gold Coast Streets set to decide the new Pirtek Enduro Cup champion. The introduction of the Pirtek Enduro Cup has enlivened the endurance section of the V8 Supercars season with the best driver and co-driver pairing from the three race series taking home silverware as the Pirtek Enduro Cup champions. Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 events, the identity of the Pirtek Enduro Cup champions will emerge after two 102 lap duels at this weekendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Castrol Edge Gold Coast 600. After a largely unpredictable Bathurst 1000 classic at Mount Panorama, the battle to claim the 2014 Pirtek Enduro Cup is wide open with 15 pairings all mathematically in with a shot of claiming the bespoke Pirtek Enduro Cup trophy. This weekend there will be a total of 300 points up for grabs.

Pirtek Enduro Cup Challengers On top of the pile is the Red Bull Racing pairing of reigning V8 Supercar champion Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell with their advantage just 30 points. The duo are perhaps unlucky not to be further in front having come perilously close to taking out the coveted Bathurst 1000 two weeks, only to be denied by a lack of a fuel on the final lap. Having rolled home in fifth spot at Mount Panorama, the #1 car remains the hot favourite to star this weekend with Whincup and Dumbrell keen to put their Bathurst heartbreak behind them. Whincup holds a formidable record on the Surfers Paradise street circuit with six race wins since 2008 proving he has ability to dominate event. However, last year the pair struggled with Dumbrell retiring the car in the first race, while Whincup battled through to fourth in the final encounter. In the current standings Ford Performance Racing’s Chaz Mostert and Paul Morris are lurking close behind following their incredible run from the back of the grid to victory at Bathurst. The dramatic final lap Bathurst win has elevated the pair from seventh to second in

the points standings. Mostert has just two starts to his name at the Gold Coast having made his debut at the event last year. Despite his relative inexperience compared to his veteran partner Morris, the 22-year-old made no mistakes on his debut last year and is feeling confident about his Pirtek Enduro Cup

chances. “Gold Coast should be really good. It’s a very demanding track for the drivers with a lot of curbs where you can break the cars pretty easily if you hit the curbs wrong which also makes for some exciting racing,” said Mostert. “It’s the last enduro in the Pirtek Enduro Cup which we’re in pretty good position for

so we just need to finish all of our races and see what the points end up being so we’ll see how we go. “I’m really looking forward to getting there, it’s an amazing atmosphere and it’ll be good to get back in the car with a win just under our belt.” The Holden Racing Team Commodore of James Courtney and Greg Murphy is well placed in third despite the pair being plagued by an electrical fault throughout their run to 13th position in the Bathurst 1000. However, a second place finish at Sandown has proved to be a solid base to build on but they will have to avoid the pitfalls of last season to stand any chance of taking the silverware. No cars outside those prepared by Walkinshaw Racing, Triple Eight Race Engineering or Ford Performance Racing have won on the Gold Coast since Murphy took a win for PWR Racing in 2005. Incidentally, Murphy will become the first non-Australian to record 200 V8 Supercar race starts this weekend.

Walkinshaw Racing’s Nick Percat and Brit Oliver Gavin are also in with a chance courtesy of their impressive run to third at Mount Panorama. Gavin has recorded two top six finishes at the circuit on his debut in 2011 alongside Murphy which could see him emerge as a dark horse. Although yet to record a podium finish in this year’s endurance campaign defending champion Craig Lowndes cannot be ruled out of the mix. Joined by Steven Richards at Red Bull this year, the pair are the most experienced on the grid which has helped them contend for top honours at Sandown and Bathurst. The duo were unlucky not secure a podium at least at Mount Panorama following a fourth place finish at Sandown. Victory in the first of two races last year helped Lowndes claim the inaugural Pirtek Enduro Cup alongside Warren Luff. Likewise, Ford Performance Racing’s Mark Winterbottom and Steve Owen will be strong contenders with Frosty desperate

to keep his V8 Supercars title hopes alive in the business end of the season. His bid would have been even stronger had he not be turned around in the closing stages of the Bathurst 1000 by Lowndes. The Erebus Mercedes of Will and Alex Davison are also in hunt along with three of the four Nissan Motorsport Altimas with Rick Kelly and David Russell best placed in 10th overall. Scott McLaughlin and Frenchman Alex Premat ensure that all five manufacturers are in the fight for the Pirtek Enduro Cup with the Volvo pairing in 11th place. Having proved to be fast in all disciplines, McLaughlin and Premat’s S60 has been knocking on the door of a strong result throughout the endurance campaign. Securing the silverware is most likely to be just out of reach this year but the pair will be a factor at the front. With so many contenders in the mix, the battle for the 2014 Pirtek Enduro Cup is set the grab the headlines at this weekend’s Castrol Edge Gold Coast 600.

The Gold Coast Street Circuit is a high speed, concrete-lined, thrill ride that was shortened for the new look event in 2010 by around 1.5 kilometres. The temporary street track has proven to create carnage in the past, particularly when drivers don’t show the patience required for victory, so the co-drivers a this year’s event will have to tread carefully. 2013 Highlight: David Reynolds starred at the event last year as he secured his first V8 Supercar race win.

Three teams – Triple Eight Race Engineering, Walkinshaw Racing and Ford Performance Racing – have dominated the last decade of V8 Supercar racing on the Gold Coast. The trio has won the last 21 races in a row between them on the tough street circuit. The last time a race was won by a team outside of those three teams was Race 1 in 2005 (Greg Murphy for PWR Racing). In that time, Triple Eight has nine wins, Walkinshaw Racing seven and FPR five (though one of these – David Reynolds and Dean Canto’s win last year – is officially credited to Rod Nash Racing, whose entry is run by FPR).

Ford Performance Racing’s victory in the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 with Chaz Mostert and Paul Morris created all sorts of records and amazing statistics.

It moved FPR to fifth on the all-time list of race wins for teams in championship history on 48, leapfrogging Gibson Motorsport in the process and leaving FPR just two behind fourth-placed Kmart Racing/HSV Dealer Team, which won 50 races from 2001 to 2008. It gave Morris his first V8 Supercar race win – and podium finish – since Calder 2001, when partner Mostert was just nine years old.

The Holden Racing Team’s Greg Murphy will celebrate his 200th Australian Touring Car Championship/V8 Supercar Championship round start on the Gold Coast.

The New Zealander becomes just the 10th driver in championship history to reach the mark in a career that began at Calder Park in Melbourne in 1997 with HRT. Murphy will become the first non-Australian driver to compete in 200 ATCC/V8SC rounds and has claimed 28 race wins – the last came on the Gold Coast way back in 2005.

Norton Hornets Nissan driver Michael Caruso will be making his 100th ATCC/V8 Supercar Championship round start on the Gold Coast.

The 2009 Darwin race winner made his championship debut at Bathurst in 2006 as a last-minute call-up for Brad Jones Racing and has been full-time in the championship since 2008. He becomes just the 39th man in championship history to join the ‘100’ club.

Despite running low on fuel in the closing laps of Bathurst and missing a chance to claim the Peter Brock Trophy, Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell still lead the race for the Pirtek Enduro Cup – the award given for the best-performed combination across the endurance races. They lead with 522 points, however Bathurst winners Chaz Mostert and Paul Morris have come storming into contention and now sit second with 492 points. James Courtney/Greg Murphy are third from Craig Lowndes/Steve Richards and Mark Winterbottom/Steve Owen.

This year is the 20th time V8 Supercars have raced on the streets of the Gold Coast since their first nonchampionship appearance at what was then known as ‘Indy’ back in 1994 (which was also prior to the category being known as V8 Supercars).

The event became a part of the V8 Supercar Championship in 2002 so this year is the 13th time it has counted for championship points and the fifth time the ‘600, two-driver endurance format has been utilised – it first appeared in 2010.

Volvo will make its first appearance in a Gold Coast V8 Supercar Championship race this year, but the manufacturer has high-profile racing history at the event from its last appearance there 18 years ago.

The great Peter Brock raced a factory-backed 850 Sedan in the two-litre Super Touring support races at the 1996 Gold Coast Indy in addition to his V8 commitments with the Holden Racing Team on the same weekend.

Only three drivers – Jamie Whincup, Mark Winterbottom and Shane van Gisbergen - have finished each and every one of the 30 races held so far in the 2014 V8 Supercar Championship.

On the flip side, Tim Slade and Robert Dahlgren have had the most failures to finish this season – six each. Both also failed to start races at Sydney Motorsport Park due to accident damage – Slade two and Swede Dahlgren one – making it a difficult season so far for both drivers.

Three drivers – Alex Buncombe (Jack Daniel’s Racing), Cameron Waters (Team JELD-WEN) and Robert Dahlgren (Valvoline Racing GRM) – are making their first start in a V8 Supercar on the streets of the Gold Coast.

Waters, however, has raced there before. He finished runner-up to Chaz Mostert in the 2010 Australian Formula Ford Championship round on the Gold Coast and also raced there in 2011 – the year he won the championship himself.

Three Castrol EDGE Gold Coast 600 co-drivers – Warren Luff, Steve Richards and Craig Baird – will be on double duty in Queensland as they fight for the Porsche Carrera Cup championship in addition to their V8 Supercar commitments. In the closest title fight in the category’s history, just 34 points covers the three coming into the last round with Luff leading Richards by 21 and Baird another 13 points behind in the chase for his fifth consecutive Carrera Cup crown.

Three way title fight set to light up Gold Coast he Porsche Carrera Cup is poised to produce one of the most thrilling scraps in Australian motorsport with three drivers vying for the coveted title at this weekend’s final round. Just 31 points separates the title protagonists heading into the final three races held at the punishing Surfers Paradise street circuit, which is the smallest margin in the championship’s history. Holden Racing Team V8 Supercar codriver Warren Luff will have a target on his back with a 21-point lead at the top of the standings following a victory and a second place finish at Mount Panorama last time out. Fellow V8 co-driver Steven Richards is in hot pursuit in second while reigning champion and Porsche Carrera Cup specialist Craig Baird is lurking just 10 points further back. With so much at stake fireworks are almost guaranteed as the trio battle it out on the streets to become the 2014 Porsche Carrera Cup champion. Title race aside, the grid will be without Michael Patrizi, who has been forced onto the sidelines after sustaining broken ribs in an accident at Mount Panorama. The Gold Coast-based driver incurred the injury when a mechanical failure put him into the wall at The Dipper in the third a final race of the penultimate round at Bathurst two weeks ago. Since the crash, the 30-year-old has undergone X-rays in hospital revealing fractures to his ribs thus rendering him unfit to compete in this weekend’s final round. Coupled with the injuries, Patrizi’s car has suffered extensive damage which he intends to repair in time for next season’s campaign in Carrera Cup Australia. He said: “I’ve sustained some rib injuries at Bathurst and I’m unfit to drive,” he told Speedcafe.com. “I have never been injured in a race car ever and it was a big hit. “There was a lot of pain in the ribs and I’m undergoing physiotherapy at the moment as I have displaced the ribs at the back. “Its uncomfortable more than anything but there are few fractures there too. “Its hugely frustrating having been running strong but I will make a full recovery there is no question about that I have just got to rest up. “We had a failure at the front probably caused by some light contact before hand. “Its done a lot of damage to the car and it needs to re-shelled, so its a big one.” While Patrizi will be absent from the paddock at Surfers Paradise, Nissan’s V8

Supercar co-driver David Russell is set to continue behind the wheel of the Roger Lago JBS Carrera Cup car. The 32-year-old deputised for Lago who was unable to compete at Mount Panorama circuit due to business commitments. “It is a bit unexpected, Bathurst could have gone a lot better in my book but at the same time Roger has offered m the chance to do Gold Coast and I wasn’t going to say no, so its a credit to him,” Russell told Speedcafe.com.

Walton plotting cagey approach on home turf ris Walton says he will continue to adopt a conservative strategy as the battle for the V8 Ute Racing Series - fuelled by Hogs Breath Cafe heats up for the penultimate round at Gold Coast this weekend. The Ford driver from nearby Yatala may have the crowd on his side but there will be plenty at stake for his home round with just a 65 point advantage over New South Wales’ David Sieders. Although keen to impress, Walton is firmly focussed on boosting his championship bid although aware of the many pitfalls the street circuit can throw up. “Our main priority is championship points, Dave’s still here, it’s only a race and a half in point’s difference between us,” said Walton. “If we have a DNF, he can take the lead and he is definitely a concern, which won’t’ go away until the last race in Sydney. “We’ve always had good pace on the Goldy, however we’ve always had issues losing wheels on the curbs so I’m going to try and be conservative, but not too conservative like I did at Bathurst.” Another local driver hoping to muscle in on the action is Ryal Harris, who has become a force to be reckoned with on the Gold Coast streets. The Queenslander has won five races at the Surfers Paradise Circuit since 2006 while holding the lap record at the venue. “I love racing on the Gold Coast, it’s always so much fun and it’s in front of my homecrowd,” said Harris. “The win eluded us last year but hopefully we can have a run like we did in 2011 and come home with the clean-sweep, we have local support from the Helm Bar, the cars fast, no doubt about that, so we’ll see how we go.” Merrimac High School Graduate Jesse Dixon is currently sitting fourth in the ARMOR ALL Drivers Championship and appears to edging closer to his maiden podium finish. “That’s our focus, our goal all year is to finish races, stay consistent and it’s working well for us,” said Dixon. “So fingers crossed we can reach the top three, it would be great to start by taking a podium in front of my home crowd, I grew up on the Gold Coast and it’s also the 10th anniversary of my fathers’ passing so it would make it 100 times sweeter.” More drivers expected to be front

runners include; Sieders who has won five races and all Pole Awards (except for 2011 when Harris took pole.) Nathan ‘Nitrous’ Pretty, currently running third in the Series and won the Gold Coast round last year. West Aussie Rhys McNally has just come off his first V8 Ute Podium win at Bathurst, he also stood on podium last year at the Gold Coast 600. George Miedecke is also back in the front running action, after claiming his first 2014 podium at Bathurst last week, since he raced full time in 2009 at the Sydney 500. Miedecke stood on the Gold Coast podium in 2007, alongside former

champions Jack Elsegood and Grant Johnson.
