Playing in the dirt at Miller Motorsports Park By Chris Peterson for the Deseret News Published: Sunday, June 26, 2011 10:24 p.m. MDT TOOELE VALLEY â&#x20AC;&#x201D; On the day's last race, Rob Naughton followed up his dominating win on Saturday by making it a perfect two-for-two on Sunday. Naughton, racing in the Pro 2 class, held off a determined Brian Deegan to win both of the weekend's races during the Lucas Oil Off Road Series at Miller Motorsports Park. "Everybody hated this track, but from the beginning I loved it," Naughton said. "I knew there were places I could pass." Winning twice during the weekend was definitely on Naughton's radar, but he admits he knew it would be tough. "I thought I could get one win, but to get two is super sweet," he said. Deegan, who took a pair of second-place finishes after a disappointing Saturday, was already looking forward to the rest of the racing season. "It's not over yet," Deegan said. "It's all a state of mind, and I'm going to win this thing." Deegan, who was second in the Pro 2 and Pro Lite classes on Sunday, and he sits in second place in the season standings in both classifications. Following up his low finishes the day before, Deegan said he was angry. "I was just pissed off today," he said. "I was either going to roll it or win." Deegan fell just short of the win in both races, but he said the day's results were good. "It's good for the team moving forward; good for the morale," he said. Chris Brandt, who won the Pro Lite Unlimited class on Sunday, said he was hungry for a victory. "We were talking about it (coming close to wins) and we decided that one more third and we were going to call it a losing streak," Brandt said. Even though he's leading in the Pro Lite season standings, Brandt says he's not comfortable. "I've learned that until I have a big enough lead that I don't have to show up for a race, I'm going to be nervous," he said. In the Super Lite race, local favorite Ron Duncombe bowed out in the first few laps after his truck gave out in the middle of the track. Wyatt Kirchner not only won the race, but visited the podium for the first time, while brother Dawson Kirchner finished third and points leader R..J. Anderson was second. "I tried my best today, and I was fortunate to land in first," Wyatt said. In the Pro 4 race, veteran racer Carl Renezeder picked up his 96th career win. Renezeder is also the points leader in the Pro 2 class, but he lost control of his truck and got spun out during that race. Other winners during Sunday's races included Cody Freeman in the Pro Buggy Unlimited; John Fitzgerald in the Limited Buggy; Doug Mittag in the UTV class; Kyle Hart in the Kart Modified; Eliott Watson in the Kart Junior 1; and Preston Roben in the Kart Junior 2. Toole, June 26, 2011: With the combination of a new track, new winners, and a capacity crowd, today www.ironplanetmotors.com was a special day in the history of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series, presented by Geico Powersports. It was standing room only here at Miller Motorsports Park, as Round 7 got going under what has undoubtedly been the best weather in the history of this series. No fewer than seven drivers picked up their first wins of the season, and for four of those drivers, it was the first victory of their careers in Lucas Oil Off Road. Hopefully you were here to be a part of it all, but if not, here's what you missed...

Junior 2 Kart As a myriad of Utah families packed the new grandstands, the boys and girls of Junior 2 Kart got the racing off to a start. After lap one, it was Preston Roben in control up front, leading Chad Graham, Shelby Anderson, Brock Heger, and Maxwell Ries in the top five. Heger charged hard in the first half of the race, moving up to third as he drove deeper than Anderson into turn four on lap three, then up to second through turn two on lap five. At the competition yellow, Heger's #411 Kartek/Signpros kart ran second, behind the leading #414 DCI Duggins Construction/King Off-Road Racing Shocks machine of Roben, and ahead of the #410 MavTV/Hart and Huntington entry of Graham, Anderson in the #405 Walker Evans Racing/Anderson's Nu Power truck, and Ries in the #474 McQueen Prototype Design/Hoosier kart. On the restart lap, Heger was on the move again, and briefly re-took the lead as he went by Roben through turns two and three. Roben wouldn't be beaten that easily, though, and he got the position right back as he made a cleaner exit out of turn five, assuming the lead once again. Behind them, Ries was hounding Anderson for fourth position, and he finally made the pass on lap nine as he swept by through turn two. Ries picked up one more spot on the final lap as he got by Graham in turn three, giving him a podium position finish. Up front, it was Roben who held off a last-minute charge from Heger to pick up the win, his first ever in Lucas Oil Off Road- good job Preston! Heger finished a close second, while Ries wound up third, Graham fourth, and Anderson fifth.

Junior 1 Kart Eliott Watson made the most of his front row starting position to grab the hole shot on the opening lap of the Junior 1 Kart race, and he led a top five of Preston Roben, Travis PeCoy, Darren Hardesty, and Broc Dickerson after the first lap. On lap two, PeCoy spun in turn five and dropped two spots down to fifth, but he re-gained one of those spots on the following lap. Both PeCoy and Dickerson had gotten around Hardesty, and shortly afterwards, Hardesty pulled off the track briefly, before re-joining well back in the pack. Up front, it was a heated battle between Watson and Roben for the lead, and at the competition yellow, Watson still led in his #203 Eibach Springs/Fox Racing Shox machine, ahead of Roben in the #210 DCI Duggins Construction/RC10.com kart, Dickerson in the #223 Rockstar/Racer X Motorsports entry, PeCoy in the #211 K&N/Sunoco truck, and Gavin Harlien in the #232 Full Tilt/Racer Services kart. On the restart, Dickerson got a great jump and moved right up to second place, and was quickly shadowing Watson in a quest for the lead. PeCoy also moved up, getting past Roben with a great drive through turn three. Roben re-gained that spot on the next lap, while up front, Dickerson was looking everywhere he could for a way past Watson. Watson wasn't giving Dickerson many options, but on the last lap, Dickerson got alongside in turn three. Dickerson had less momentum now, and as he was also set up for the outside line into turn four Watson managed to keep him at bay, and held tough to take his fifth win of the season. Dickerson came home second, ahead of Roben in third, who picked up back-to-back podium finishes in the first two races of the day. Fourth went to PeCoy, and Harlien rounded out the top five. Modified Kart Rounding out the day's action on the shorter "kids'" track were the always-exciting Modified Karts. Mitchell DeJong got off to a blazing start in his #1 Traxxas/Red Bull machine, and grabbed a convincing early lead after the first lap. Sheldon Creed ran second, with Scotty Steele third, Brock Heger fourth, and Kyle Hart fifth. Points leader Mitch Guthrie Jr. had big crash between turns three and four, but was able to continue at the back of the pack. The order up front went unchanged for a few laps, but as the top two caught the first lapped driver, Creed used the slower driver to his advantage as he got the preferred line over DeJong as the two went past, and Creed took over the lead in his #522 Kartek truck. Creed led through the competition yellow, with DeJong second, Steele third in the #548 Simpson/DeJong Off Road Cars entry, Heger fourth in the #511 Signpros/CMI kart, and Hart fifth in the #523 GearUp2Go.com/Duncan Racing machine. On the restart, Creed dropped several spots down to fourth, while Hart moved up to third as he and Steele helped make it a three-way battle for the lead with DeJong. The young drivers went three-wide into turn six, and out of the chaos came Hart in the lead. Hart's lead was short-lived, though, as he and Steele got together shortly afterwards, and the two crashed into the outside wall out of turn one. Hart's race was over, but Steele was able to continue, albeit further down the order. In all the confusion that occurred as drivers scrambled to miss joining Hart and Steele's crash, Creed got back to the front before a full course yellow was thrown, and as the field bunched behind the Can Am Commander pace UTV, it was Creed, DeJong, Blake Lenk, Cole Mamer, and Jeff Hoffman in the top five. Only one lap of racing was slated as the flagman prepared to throw the green flag, and Creed made the most of it as he drove perfectly up front to take the win, his first since win in the class this season Second went to DeJong third to Lenk in the #521 Walker Evans Racing/P C I Race Radios machine fourth

In the Pro 4 class for four-wheel-drive trucks, four-time class champion Carl Renezder had it all his way in the No. 17 Lucas Oil/General Tire Ford, taking the checkered flag 2.080 seconds ahead of yesterday’s winner, Kyle LeDuc in his No. 99 Rockstar/Makita Ford. Kent Brascho completed the podium in his No. 8 BFGoodrich/Lucas Oil Chevrolet, with Utah transplant Jerry Dougherty and Travis Coyne filling out the top five. Rob Naughton made it two for two in the Pro 2 class for two-wheel-drive trucks, driving his No. 54 Ready Lift/Maxxis Ford to a 1.742-second margin of victory over X-Games freestyle motocross star Brian Deegan in the No. 38 Rockstar Energy Drink/Metal Mulisha Ford, with Robby Woods third in the No. 99 Lucas Slick Mist/Superchips Chevrolet. Jeff Geiser and Greg Adler completed the top five.. The Super Lite main saw the Kirchner brothers, Wyatt and Dawson, sandwich the podium with Wyatt taking the win in his No. 26 Speed Technologies Mazda by a razor-thin 0.750 second over RJ Anderson’s No. 37 Walker Evans Racing/SoCal Super Trucks Mazda, marking Anderson’s second runner-up finish in two days. Dawson Kirchner was third in his No. 16 Speed Technologies Mazda, with Saturday’s winner Patrick Clark and Chad George taking fourth and fifth, respectively. Other race winners on the day were Cody Freeman in Pro Buggy Unlimited, Chris Brandt in Pro Lite Unlimited, John Fitzgerald in Limited Buggy, Doug Mittag in UTV, Kyle Hart in Kart Modified, Preston Roben in Junior Kart 2, taking his second win in as many days, and Elliott Watson in Junior Kart 1. The next big off-road event at Miller Motorsports Park will be the Ultra4 American Rock Sports Challenge on July 15-16. Reno, Nev. — RJ Anderson’s stranglehold on first place in the SuperLite Championship Series will be tested over two demanding races June 25 and 26, as the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series rolls into the Miller Motorsports Park outside of Salt Lake City, Utah to unleash its ferocious brand of high-flying truck racing into a stadium of adrenaline-thirsty motorsports fanatics. Torchmate/Speed Technologies’ Dawson Kirchner arrives at rounds seven and eight on a hot streak, boasting some blistering qualifying times and a first place finish from his round five and six performance at Glen Helen Raceway. But Kirchner will have his hands full, battling Walker Evans Racing/SoCal SuperTruck’s RJ Anderson, who locked down the points lead after his round one win and has never let loose. Running at the front of the pack, he starts the weekend with a towering 24-points over second place Pat Clark in the 16-race circuit. But the SuperLite season has proven full of surprises, and this weekend at the Tooele race track will be no exception. Any one of over a dozen racers could trounce upon the podium in the ultra-competitive SuperLite division, where one wrong move into a tight turn or massive jump can crumple a racer’s chances of checkered flag glory. Kawasaki/Funco Motorsports’ Chad George, battling Anderson for the overall points lead, ran into mechanical woes during rounds five and six action, but jostle for lead position in Utah, pushing hard for a win that will put him back into contention for the championship. Rookie SuperLite racer Jessie Johnson, brother of five-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson, landed upon the podium for the first time during his Southern California effort, taking the A.M. Ortega General Engineering Contractor Inc./ Lowes Home Improvement truck to the box twice, snatching a third and second at Glen Helen Raceway. Pat Clark’s consistency has him nipping at the heels of Anderson for the points lead, and a big performance this

Off Road Racing Series making return to Miller Motorsports Park By Chris Peterson For the Deseret News Published: Friday, June 24, 2011 8:26 p.m. MDT TOOELE VALLEY â&#x20AC;&#x201D; The Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series is back at Miller Motorsports Park, and this time the racers have a brand new track to compete on. After the Lucas Oil races came to Utah last year, MMP general manager John Larson said officials made the decision to construct a permanent, high-speed, off-road track to host the event. "We have developed a great relationship with Lucas Oil," Larson said in a press release. "Their race last year was so well received and generated such positive feedback that we decided to make the commitment to build them a permanent home at Miller Motorsports Park that can also be used for our other off-road events and activities." The Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series consists of 11 classes, all of which will take place this weekend. Rounds seven (today) and eight (Sunday) of the season's 15 rounds will be run this weekend. Local personality Ron Duncombe will be in the field of the SuperLite class. Duncombe is known as the spokesman for Maverik Country stores, driver of the Maverik Monster Truck and radio host. In his first season of racing in the SuperLite class, Duncombe currently sits in fifth place in the standings, 49 points behind leader R.J. Anderson. Duncombe, who has nonstop energy, is excited to compete in front of a home crowd. "It's hard for my family, friends and co-workers to get out to the races from week to week, so it's going to be cool to race on my home track. No pressure, right?" Duncombe said after qualifying Friday. "I just love the charge of sliding trucks in the dirt." Coming off a season-best fourth-place finish at Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernadino, Calif., Duncombe says he feels he has some good momentum going. "It's exciting to know that you have the speed to stay with these guys," he said. "It's all about confidence." While Duncombe says the technical parts of racing vary from class to class, but having a love for the sport is what keeps him coming back. "I have passion for racing, and to be honest, that's why I do it," Duncombe said. "It's some of the coolest stuff out there. If it's shopping carts or snow sleds, as long as I'm racing, I'm in." Also in Utah this weekend will be Brian Deegan, one of the pioneers of motocross. Deegan, racing in the Pro 2 and Pro Lite classes, is in second place in the season standings in both. "It's a lot like motocross, except with dirt bikes I was getting so many injuries," Deegan said in a phone interview. "I was blown away with it, and the aspects of racing are the same." In his most serious accident in 2005, Deegan lost a kidney, lacerated his spleen and lost a large amount of blood. No matter how many times he's been hurt, Deegan always makes sure he's at the starting line. He's the only athlete to compete in at least one event in every X Games. This weekend, Deegan's focus is on winning and moving up in the standings. "My goal is to win. I want to get in there and be aggressive," he said. Covered grandstands will provide guests with shade and a view of the entire course. VIP packages are also available. As was the case last year, the action will be fast and furious, with high-flying vehicles going wheel to wheel and door to door, fighting for every inch of track space. The paddock will be open to spectators at no charge, and fans can chat with the teams and drivers while they prepare their vehicles. The series promotes a family-friendly atmosphere, and last year a number of lucky fans got to take home discarded pieces of bodywork autographed by the various drivers. The Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series event gets underway on Saturday, with a full schedule of practice, qualifying and main-event races for all 11 classes on each day. RENO, NV— A showdown looms this weekend on the dirt track of Glen Helen Raceway May 21 and 22 in what could be a decisive weekend in the hotly contested 16-race SuperLite Series Championship. Red-hot racer Jacob Person will battle two formidable hometown favorites — overall points leader RJ Anderson and veteran podium-placer Chad George — before a notoriously vocal, and packed, San Bernardino stadium. But while Anderson, George and Person make up the race’s likely frontrunners, the unpredictable nature of SuperLite, illustrated by Jacob Person’s dramatic sweep of first-place at his hometown Surprise, Ariz. stadium in SuperLite rounds 3 and 4, leaves the door open for a talented cast ofaggressive racers hungry for the podium. Person, who had not won a SuperLite race in his career, dominated the competition for back-to-back wins in Arizona in mid-April, and in one weekend catapulted himself into the hunt for the overall points championship. The razor-thin margins separating SuperLite’s elite in the overall points standings, will have each racer pinning the pedal to the floor over challenging moguls, through tight turns and entering Glen Helen’s gravity-defying jumps. He led a group of three racers who are establishing themselves as the next generation of off-road stars — RJ Anderson, Chad George and CJ Greaves — to take the two wins. I got the first position right in the first corner, and you know, I couldn't ask for anything better. SuperLite Series is putting on the best of the best,” said Person. Person’s wins this weekend were the first of his SuperLite career. His dominance at Speedworld was a remarkable turnaround from his 10th and 12th place finishes in rounds one and two, landing him in the hunt for the overall points championship with 12 races remaining in the season.

Anderson, piloting the Walker Evans Racing truck, snatched a third place finish in round three and a second in round four, securing his grip on the overall SuperLite Championship Series points lead. Anderson launched into the season with a round one victory and a third place in round two. “We’re happy to finish on the podium all four out of the four rounds,” said Anderson, who is also sponsored by SoCal SuperTrucks and Polaris. “As far as the championship goes, it was a good step.” Anderson said he was looking for a better finish at Surprise, but a combination of poor qualifying times and a couple of small mental mistakes on the track kept him from racking up another win. “I felt like we had the truck to win, but [Jacob Person] just caught better breaks than we did,” said Anderson. Greaves drove the Torchmate truck to second place in round three, while George piloted the Monster Energy/Kawasaki machine to a third in round four. Greaves, who was selected as Dirt Sports Magazine’s 2010 Rookie of the Year, has proven to be a consistent threat on the SuperLite series. George took the second place in the series championship last year. However, this program is a more than just a Rent-A-Car service for amateur leadfoots. Instead, participants will be presented with a fully-prepared SuperLite Race Truck, backed by your own professional race crew, including a designated chief and spotter, as well as racing fuel, tires and all other race support equipment.
