Is the sign going to be permanent or temporary? Will it be indoors or outdoors? Will it be applied to an existing surface or a product supplied by Speedy Signs? Do you have specific colours that need to be matched? Does artwork exist or do you want Speedy Signs to create it? Is the sign to be illuminated? If so, internally or externally? their sign. The sign is of no use if it cannot be easily seen. Who you are - Your logo and business name. What you do - If your business name doesn't say what you do, consider including a one-line summary of what your business does or a slogan that says what sets you apart from your competition. You might also like to include a brief product or service listing, although, you can over do it, so try to avoid cluttering up your sign by including too much information. Where you are - Your contact details e.g. telephone number, fax number, website address and physical address.

Understanding Modern Signage The vast majority of signs today are produced by applying adhesive vinyl that has been cut, printed or by printing ink directly onto a variety of materials known as substrates. Computer Cut Adhesive Vinyl Using equipment known as Plotters, a knife blade cuts your required lettering into coloured adhesive vinyls. This process can offer multiple colours but is adhered individually. Printed Digital Graphics This technology consists of a machine known as a Large (Wide) Format Digital Printer. This machine places ink onto various adhesive and non-adhesive films or directly onto substrates giving the ability to produce photographic or multi coloured signage in one process. This technology has come a long way with colour vibrancy and durability, due to the addition of Solvent and UV based ink systems. Exterior durability can be guaranteed for up to 5 years depending on the ink system used. Applying a laminated film to your prints also gives added durability in the form of exterior life, scratch resistancy and graffiti protection. The amount of colours output on digital machines has improved, however not all colours can be accurately reproduced. So be sure to advise us if the colours required need to be very specific. Screen Printing With this process ink is fed through screens directly onto the substrate one colour at a time. Most commonly used for larger run orders as the cost of setting up screens for short runs can be significant. Substrates The key to choosing the most suitable substrate is to understand your requirements. Commonly used substrates and their uses: Acrylic - Used for light box faces and interior signage. Can be formed with heat for such specialty products as business card holders, point of purchase displays etc. Commonly known as Perspex速 and available in many colours . Aluminum, Copper, Brass - Versatile materials suitable for interior and exterior, commercial and industrial signs. These metals can be easily cut, welded and brazed to any form. Adding a lacquer clear coating makes them more resistant to corrosion. Aluminium can be anodised or powdercoated in a wide range of colours and is lightweight and strong.
4
Composite Aluminium - 4mm thick, excellent for outdoor signage, commonly known as Signbond. Ideal for a classy finish with seamless edges and curved faces. Lightweight, rigid and strong. Various colours available. Corrugated Plastic - A lightweight inexpensive plastic used for the application of vinyl and screen-printing. Common names are Corflute or Coreboard. Appearance shows ribbing on the front and back. Used for real estate signage and for short term promotional work. Good for a year or two outside and can be curved or folded. Common thickness 3mm 10mm. Foam Board - A foam based substrate with a cardboard surface and foam core centre for interior use. Very lightweight but easily dented. All of the substrates used above accept adhesive backed vinyl films, which can also create a unique background colour. Nylon - Has a smooth satin finish and is suitable for interior and exterior use. Must be hemmed. Used commonly for flags. Magnetic Sheeting - Used primarily for removable signs on vehicles but lighter grades can be screen or digitally printed for promotional purposes. Can only be applied to steel. Paper - A very inexpensive way of making a temporary banner that uses the vinyl backing paper as the sign substrate. Alternatively applying vinyl to a paper based product like Valeron or Tyvec. Plywood - Must be primed and painted. Edges should also be sealed to prevent moisture absorption. Great product for outdoor signs as long lasting (5 years+). Plywood is available in standard colours often doublesided. Commonly called Sign Ply or Sign Gloss. Polycarbonate - Same appearance as Acrylic. A high impact-resistant substrate. Resistant to vandal attack problems such as rocks being thrown. Used in light boxes and sometimes used for some applications requiring OSH specifications. Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) - One of the most versatile substrates. Indoor and outdoor, it will not warp when properly installed although it can expand in direct sunlight. Can be fastened with bolts, screws and construction adhesives. PVC can be fabricated by sawing, drilling, gluing, welding, laminating, routing, die casting, hot stamping, thermo forming, heat bending and can be painted with specific paints. Available in Rigid and Foamed varieties.

Commonly used substrates and their uses (cont...) PVC Banner - Extremely durable and suited to both interior and exterior applications. In heavier weights this material is opaque and can be sign written on both sides. Hemmed with or without ropes and eyelets, and can also be used for billboards. Large outdoor banners require wind sockets (holes) to reduce wind resistance. Poster Board - A paper based substrate primarily for interior use. Steel and Stainless Steel - Steel is commonly used for large sign manufacture, supporting poles and cases. Can be galvanized and powdercoated in a wide range of colours. Stainless Steel has a tendency to be easily marked or scratched, but can provide a highly polished look to signage.
The primary categories of adhesive backed vinyl films are: Cast - Generally used on opaque (non-transparent) surfaces intended to be lit from the front or above. Extremely flexible, has good dimensional and colour stability and conforms to irregular surfaces covering rivets and corrugations. Excellent for vehicle applications. Premium Opaque has a high gloss finish and is rated as a 7-10 year film. High Performance Calendered (Polymeric) - Generally used on opaque surfaces. This film is excellent for medium term exterior and long term interior use. Comes in a Gloss and Matt finish and different exterior durability ratings from 3-7 years. Economy Calendered (Monomeric) - A very economic vinyl for short term outdoor applications. Good for promotional signage. Up to 3 year exterior durability. Translucent - Generally used on translucent surfaces intended to be backlit. Excellent colour uniformity both day and night. This has a satin or matt finish and up to a 7 year film rating. Specialty Films - A variety of films for unique applications are also available. Examples include Polyester (metalised effects), Blockout (high opacity), Dry Erase (whiteboard vinyl), Chalkboard Vinyl (blackboard vinyl), Etched or Frosted Films, Pearlescent (high lustre), Fluorescent (high impact visibility vinyl), Holographic (light diffracting) Banner Vinyl (flexible), Anti Grafitti and Floor Graphics, Paint Protection (vehicle graphics), Transparent and Easy Removable Vinyl.

Buildings and offices can be dramatically enhanced with quality crafted architectural signs. We can work to your design, size, colour and material specifications or produce concepts and designs for your consideration. A full installation service is available or signs can be delivered ready for installation.
Designing architectural signs is both challenging and rewarding, with the full range of outdoor signage options to draw upon. Architectural signs consist of two primary components, the structure and the sign. The third component may be illumination. The Structure - The design of the supporting structure will be influenced by the enterprise the sign is promoting. A golf or country club will generally want to promote a solid "Here to stay" image and the structure will reflect this. A winery on the other hand might want to reflect the qualities of sophistication and simple good taste. The Sign - Vinyl or 3D lettering and graphics applied to metal, plastic or wooden substrates are generally the preferred option. The design will dictate the ultimate selection but rest assured, if you can imagine it, it can be produced. Illumination (optional) - See page 20.

The inexpensive way to advertise products and services with impact to passing trade. Speedy Signs have the most extensive range of options, from lightweight PVC T-Boards to large wooden A-Frames and solid rubber bases with aluminium panels. Custom designed and shaped versions are also available. We have the solution to suit your message, and budget. Footpath Signs - Freestanding footpath signs are available in a variety of designs and materials. For small volumes the panels will have applied vinyl lettering or full colour digital graphics. For economy, large volumes will be screenprinted. The two most popular are: T-Boards (round or rectangular base) - Come with either Aluminium or PVC panels. Bases are generally plastic which are hollow water fillable or solid heavy rubber to stop the wind blowing them around. A-Frames (Sandwich Boards) - PVC, Metal or Plywood signs of varying sizes.

This is the way to gain maximum road frontage exposure. Make your business or institution easy to find and communicate your products and services to passing traffic. These signs are also suited to Universities, Office Parks, Shopping Malls, Industrial Parks, Hospitals and Hotels. Generally produced using vinyl lettering and graphics applied to a Plywood or Aluminium substrate. Vinyl stands up to the elements and offers excellent faderesistant properties. Plywood and Aluminium has the versatility to be fastened with bolts, screws, rivets and nails. It can be sawn, drilled, routered, bent to shape and painted. The supporting structure will generally be manufactured out of Steel, Stainless Steel, Aluminium or Wood. When manufactured in metal, it would be Galvanized and/or have an Etch Primer applied to ensure durability, then Powder Coated or Wet Spray painted to the desired colour. The sign may need to be approved by the appropriate local body to ensure it complies with regulations covering location, height, stability etc.
Effective sign design Visibility - Make sure your sign stands out from its surroundings.
Readability - Make it clear, simple and easy to read so your message is understood.
Noticeability - Get attention by changing the colour, message, size or shape frequently.
Legibility - Use a typestyle people can read easily.

We can help you make a good first impression. Perception is reality, so how your customers or clients view your business will be influenced by how you brand your building and the quality of the signage. We understand the requirements for consistency in branding. With our globally proven systems that produce quality products and our local owneroperators who make it happen, expect us to deliver. Building signs fall into three primary categories: Panel, Illuminated and Banners. Panel - Vinyl lettering and graphics applied to plastic, metal or wooden substrates. The versatility of vinyl has no equal, both in terms of the quality of sign and its suitability for exterior applications. From simple, single colour signs to full colour reproduction of logos or photographs, it offers the perfect combination of economy and longevity. Illuminated - Refer to page 20. Banners - A cost effective, lightweight and durable sign panel. Ideal for cost effective small or larger applications with a 2-3 year exterior life.
Installations Installation methods vary depending on the surface the sign is to be applied to. Fixing surfaces may include concrete, metal, wood, plastic board etc. Ground mounted signs may have issues in preparing the holes e.g. volcanic rock or utility cabling. Discuss your requirements carefully and maybe organise a site visit before your signage installation.

Speedy Signs can supply 3D and cut out letter signage for both standard and illuminated communication mediums. Brand differentiation can be achieved by combining different materials and effects including enhanced contrast, shadows, halo and neon-like effects that result in signs that project a dimensional quality with maximum visual impact. Acrylic or PVC - Routered or laser cut lettering and graphics. Some standard colours are available or letters can be spray painted to produce specific colour requirements. Fabricated acrylic letters can be lit with Neon or LED lights for 24 hour outdoor visibility. MDF, PVC and Plywood - Routered or laser cut lettering and graphics. Spray painted finish, acrylic or adhesive vinyl applied to the face with painted edges. Polystyrene Letters and Logos - Mainly for interior display or thick exterior signage. Urethane foam can be used for exterior projects. Paint or vinyl is applied. Aluminum, Copper and Brass - Can be router cut, laser cut or cast then flushed fitted to any surface. Anodising or powdercoating gives different effects to the finished surface. For a greater dimension effect, letters can be raised off the surface.

The sheer brilliance we build into illuminated and electronic signs makes them the reigning champions when it comes to gaining maximum business exposure. With operations in 30 countries, we have access to advanced systems for illuminated awnings, light boxes, neon, channel letters and L.E.D. displays. Illuminated Boxes - Consist of a sign cabinet with fluorescent tube lights. Acrylic or flexi face panels are fixed to one or both faces. Acrylic Illuminated Sign Face - Uses acrylic or polycarbonate sheets with translucent vinyl lettering and graphics applied to the face. Flexi Face Illuminated Sign Face - Used for larger illuminated sign boxes where a continuous, join-free surface is required and acrylic sheeting is not a suitable option. Best for wind resistance. Neon Signs - Suited to interior and exterior use. Two types of neon are available; Standard (Blue & Red) or Coloured Glass with around 30 colours, which is more expensive but gives a richer colour. 3 Sizes of neon tube are available; 9mm for tight curves such as script, 12mm for general work and 15mm for larger lettering etc.

Inform, entice and attract passing custom with sophisticated window graphics. Image is everything, so take control of your business brand and give it real personality. Show us examples that you want to emulate, or we can produce unique and individual designs for you. With experience gained from our 20 stores in New Zealand, we can position your business at the leading edge of graphic design. Temporary - Vibrant shorter life vinyl is an excellent alternative to the traditional water colour (paint) approach, and no messy removal job! Fluorescent colours demand customers attention to your promotion but have a shorter life. Permanent - Vinyl lettering and graphics, applied directly to the glass, have largely replaced traditional hand painted signage as it is more economical, faster and allows for complex requirements such as logos and illustrations. Removable etch glass vinyl is more cost effective than traditional sandblasting of glass. Perforated adhesive back vinyl is also available for window graphics that require one way view capability including vehicle window graphics. Digital Graphics - Lamination is recommended for protection against UV light and chemicals when using full colour digital graphics.

Systems are available for the rapid and economical updating of menu boards and backlit point of purchase displays.
Sign buyer’s checklist Here’s how to identify your signage needs and guide your Speedy Signs consultant to making the best recommendations for you. What’s your sign for? Directing, informing or selling? Confirm durability requirements and situation: Temporary or permanent? Inside or outside?
What image do you want to project? Professional? Sophisticated? Youthful? Fun? How should it coordinate with your other advertising and graphics?
Your target customers: Whose attention do you want to attract?
Viewing distance and time: How far will your readers be from your sign? How long will they have to read it? Mounting your sign: Where will your sign be displayed? How will it be attached? Your vehicles have the potential to work for you 24 hours a day. We can advise on the benefits of the various options available. For example: Vinyl lettering lasts longer than paint and is removable. Digital graphics can create a powerful impact and communicate complex messages. Call Speedy Signs for free advice on how to drive extra business your way.
Magnetics - Magnetic sheet 0.8mm thick provides removable signage for all flat steel vehicle panels. A suitable protective coating for paintwork for a magnetic sign is a silicone based car polish. The magnetic sign should be removed and cleaned every week. Vehicle grade magnetics should be specified. Either vinyl lettering, digital graphics or screen printing are suitable for magnetics. Window Film and Tinting - Window tint or perforated film and sticker application is governed by rules issued by the Land Transport Safety Authority and administered by the New Zealand Police and Warrant of Fitness testing stations. Your Speedy Signs store will be able to advise you on the regulations applicable to your vehicle or alternatively check the LTSA website. Vehicle Signage - 5-7 years+ vinyl’s allow more scope for creativity and visual impact. Durability is affected by exposure to direct sunlight with vertical surfaces like doors and sides having the longest life. The majority of vehicle signage utilises lettering, logo and background panels cut from vinyl. Full colour digital graphics printed onto vinyl are very popular as technology advances and reduces the cost of production which increases the advertising benefits. Many customers wrap their vehicle in digitally printed vinyl and turn them into a moving billboard.

Three methods of production depending on quantity and application: Computer-Cut Vinyl - Suitable for large text only signage. Generally applied to corflute, plywood, PVC or metal substrates like aluminium or steel. Digital Printing - Used for one off or low quantity runs. Prints are applied onto corflute or for specific applications onto acrylic or metal. Digital printing gives excellent reproduction of logos, architect’s illustrations and photography. Screen Printing - Suitable for larger runs (over 30) of identical signs. Both simple lettering and complex full colour production can be achieved. The substrate is usually corflute although more expensive acrylic or metal substrates may be specified for certain applications.
