A Little Bit of History South Bay Cooperative, Inc. d.b.a. United Checker Cab grew out of a family taxicab business named The Wilmington Cab Company. Wilmington Cab’s history goes back much further. Taken together with the companies that grew out of it, Wilmington Cab Company has been in continuous operation since 1937, making it the oldest taxicab company in Los Angeles County. Mitchell Rouse, who heads the organization’s management team, is the third generation in the business, following his father before him, and his father’s uncle before that. Today, William J. Rouse, the fourth generation in the business, is the organization’s General Manager. Administrative Services Cooperative, Inc. Then.. (ASC) manages five taxicab cooperatives in greater Los Angeand Now! les for its member fleets, which in addition to United Checker Cab are South Bay Yellow Cab, Long Beach Yellow Cab, Yellow Cab of Los Angeles and Fiesta Taxi. These fleets together total 1,175 vehicles and make up the largest taxicab organization in the western United States.

CITY OF CARSON Carson was part of a Spanish Land Grant known as Rancho San Pedro deeded to Juan Jose Dominguez over 200 years ago. During the incorporation process, the community was named after George Henry Carson, a member of the Dominguez family. "Dominguez" was a close second to "Carson" as the name for the newly incorporated city. Incorporated as a general law city on February 20, 1968, the city adopted the motto of "Future Unlimited." Its strategic location and vacant land were part of the reason for that statement of unbridled optimism. Well, the City of Carson is in Southern California, about 16 miles south of downtown Los Angeles, in the region known as the South Bay. Carson is bordered by the city of Long Beach on the east, and the city of Torrance on the west. The Los Angeles harbor is a few miles to the south of Carson; California's famous coastline and beaches are about 6 miles to the west of Carson. (Excerpt from the City of Carson Chamber website)

CITY OF MANHATTAN BEACH Cities such as this don't just appear -- yet, comparatively speaking, the history of Manhattan Beach covers a relatively short span. In its earliest days, Manhattan Beach was part of the ten-mile ocean frontage of Rancho Sausal Redondo, which means "Round Clump of Willows." At one time the area was called "Shore Acres" by George Peck, who owned a section of the north end of town. In 1901, John Merrill bought the south portion and called his section Manhattan after his old home, New York City. Peck and Merrill, unable to agree on a city name, flipped a coin and Manhattan won.
