Llangollen Canals Experience Day
Sunday 12th July 2015 The Wharf, Llangollen, Denbighshire (LL20 8TA) 10am for 10.30am to approx 4.30pm £27 Includes: Both Canal Experience and return coach from Wharf to Aqueduct
Here’s an opportunity to tick off two great canal experiences in one day. In the morning we travel to Horseshoe Falls by horsedrawn boat. In the afternoon we enjoy a trip by boat over the UK’s biggest navigable aqueduct! This trip has been put together by a team who have been running trips from Llangollen Wharf since 1884! It is an idyllic part of the world where we can watch the fish swim lazily by in the clear water delivered fresh from the River Dee as our boat glides silently through the Welsh mountains. Here’s how the day will work: Sunday Morning: We’ll meeting up at the Wharf to see our horse drawn boat being prepared for a prompt 10.30am departure for the Horseshoe Falls at the head of the canal. It's a leisurely ride along the last stretch of the Llangollen canal, not navigable by any other boats. A stop at the end allows us to admire the chain bridge across the River Dee and marvel at the man-made Horseshoe Falls, another masterpiece by Thomas Telford. Lunch Break: We should have free time at the Wharf between 12.30pm and 2.00pm. There is a lovely café on site, or we are within 5 minutes’ walk of the town centre with it’s well known pubs. Last year the members recommended The Corn Mill Pub which is across the river opposite the station. Sunday Afternoon: We leave the Wharf by coach (coach leaves 2.30pm prompt) to a nearby village where we join a motorised canal boat to take us through the beautiful Vale of Llangollen and across the famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct built by Thomas Telford between 1793 and 1806.

However whatever camera you choose to take with you a holiday will hopefully allow you some free time to further explore your photography

Spaceguard Centre Visit
Date: Saturday 18th July 2015 Place: Knighton. Powys (LD7 1LW) 1.45pm for 2pm Tour Cost: £10 Includes: 1.5 Hour Private Group Tour, Spice Coordinator, VAT I realise that this is a bit of a drive for most of us, but is an opportunity to visit somewhere really unusual and unique in the UK. The Spaceguard Centre is located at the former Powys County Observatory near Knighton in mid-Wales. Sited at the top of a hill, the observatory offers outstanding panoramas in all directions, and a clear 360 degree horizon. It is the only organisation in the UK addressing the hazard of Near Earth Objects. NEOs are asteroids and comets that come close to, and sometimes collide with the Earth. Such impacts can have devastating effects – they have in the past and will in the future unless we use available technologies to prevent them. The aim of Spaceguard is to develop and maintain a world-class facility for astronomical research and science education. It is privately owned and funded mainly through visitors like us. Our Tour: We have booked a tour of approx 1½ hours with the centre owners. They will explain the importance of the work they do and how they do it. We will see a range of telescopes including a 13” apochromatic refractor. There is also a planetarium for us to experience and the Robotic Telescope Control Centre. Note the centre has a shop but no cafe, so we will probably drive to a local town afterwards for refreshments.

The House and Garden together provide around 66 full time and 23 part time jobs. Many of these people learn their trade on the estate. The Full House tour lasts for approximately 2 hours and brings Chatsworth and the family’s history to life, taking in the masterpieces from the Devonshire collection. The tour explores the painted hall, chapel, state rooms, sculpture gallery and you also get the opportunity to visit the Victorian theatre and belvedere as part of your tour (subject to availability). After this, our tickets will allow us to enjoy the Estate as tourists for the remainder of the day.

It really sums up what Spice is all about – fun, friendship, excitement & the chance to try an activity that anyone can enjoy!” Up to twenty people sitting side by side in a forty foot long boat, with a carved dragon's head and tail attached. A drummer in the prow beating time, a steerer in the stern keeping the boat on course with a giant paddle, the crew, ten each side speeding the boat down the river to the finish line! The atmosphere is brilliant, which is why this is one of the essential events in the Spice calendar! This is The Big One! A huge national Spice event organised for Spice by a great group of specialists. As it’s the Official Spice UK National Finals, all groups will be sending a team to compete. We have our own trophies and medals to go for, and the races will be run on a timed basis over the day. Don't worry if you've never been in a Dragon Boat before, we'll have plenty of time to practice before the racing begins in earnest (and as this is Spice, it’s all just for fun anyway!). It's great fun and totally unlike any other kind of canoeing with team work being the key, not strength.

The Elan Valley and Red Kite Country is one of my favourite areas and continue to demand repeat visits. The quieter hills of mid Wales, locally known as the forgotten Welsh Lake District are beautiful. This area surrounding Llandrindod is relatively unknown area and we aim to get the most out of it. One day will see us heading over to Rhayader and the Elan Valley. There are numerous varied and interesting walks around this valley. The region is typified by the deep valleys and upland moorland, dotted with spectacular reservoirs, and it is famed for saving the Red Kites which have managed an unprecedented comeback and can be seen in their hundreds at the feeding site in Rhyader at Feeding time. Accommodation: This opulent 4-star hotel is set amongst the rolling hills in ‘The Heart of Wales’. A super swimming pool, Jacuzzi and spa room are features of this hotel and make our stay relaxing, whilst the recently refurbished bar area, and a lovely dining room with conservatory, make the evenings a pleasure.

We will, of course be under expert instruction throughout. We take off from Coventry with one Spice student in the pilots seat beside the instructor and the other observing from the back seat. Half an hour later we land in Stratford where we swap over. This way, you gain much more than with a standard lesson and get to see two airports. The views will also be lovely over the Warwickshire countryside.

Go Below - Underground Challenge EXTREME
Date: Saturday 1st August 2015 Place: Near Betws-y-Coed, Wales (LL24 0ON) 11am (ends around 6pm) Cost: £59 Member, Includes: All instruction, equipment, transport from Conwy Falls Extras: Please note special cancellation terms. Take a packed lunch for candlelit lunch Please note: this is the next level in Go Below experiences. We recommend that you have either already done the “basic” day or are totally confident that you have the fitness and aptitude to go straight in at this advanced level. Note that the 2015 version on this event takes around 7 hours. If you think you're ready for the next level in underground challenge, this is just what you're looking for. Starting from their base at the Conwy Falls Cafe, you’ll be kitted up with a harness, helmet, lamp and Wellington boots before heading off in the Land Rovers to one of the largest and deepest abandoned slate mines in the world. After a short walk up to the entrance with stunning views on all sides, we enter the labyrinth of over fifty miles of tunnel and over a thousand spectacular caverns carved by the Victorians though the very heart of a mountain. The going gets tough quickly, and it stays tough. Our route takes us over many lofty traverses - balancing on old beams or pipes over voids of darkness. We cross ancient timber bridges and abseil off hideous drops to sink deeper and deeper under the earth. Ultimately we reach the very bottom accessible floor of the mine - 1,300 feet under the mountain. It is here that we are at the very deepest point that can be reached in Snowdonia. After exploring this fascinating underworld we slowly make our back up step by step to terra firma. You may be leaving the mine behind, but memories of an experience of a lifetime will be coming home with you. The underground Challenge Extreme adventure runs all year round, whatever the weather and all your kit and equipment including Wellies are provided. The trip generally takes around 7 hours, including kitting up, the brief, the journey to and from the mine and your time underground. The size and ability of your party will influence the speed at which you progress and the range of activities that your instructor will present. No experience in caving or climbing is required. There is no squeezing through tight spaces involved and you are not expected to get excessively wet (unless you fall in a big pool of water!) However, this trip is very mentally intense and physically demanding. A good head for heights is essential, as is a reasonably good personal level of fitness and agility. You can see a video of a group on our Challenge Xtreme HERE

Our Day comprises 2 parts and with a break between the 2 when we can grab some refreshments at the cafe, so expect to be on site for around 4 – 5 hours: ● The Bounce Below: This new attraction gives us the chance to bounce on huge trampolines suspended underground! The trampolines are hung in a cavern twice the size of St Paul's Cathedral and are accompanied by a huge light show! We’ll be given overalls and helmet and use a train to travel inside the mountain for the one-hour experience. The trampolines are reached by train, with each linked by a 60ft long slide. It is thought to be the first facility of its kind and is open from July 2014, so Spice will be amongst the first groups to experience it. ● Titan Zipline: The newest Zipworld Zipline, line riders fly high over Moor, Mountain and Mine on the world’s longest Zipline course. We will be taken by vehicle to the start of the first zip line – the longest of the three at 890m and 450m above sea level. There is a short and scenic walk between the end and start of the next two zip lines, which are 630m and 450m respectively. Each stretch has 4 parallel cables so we descend in teams of 4. Unlike the “Velocity Zip” at Bethesda, you are clipped to these lines in a seated rather than lying down position. Max speed on these lines is around 60mph. If you have already done “Velocity”, “Titan” promises a different kind of Zip experience – we don’t think you will be disappointed!
Western Style Rifle Shooting Afternoon
Date: Sunday 2nd August 2015 Place: Birmingham Shooting Centre, Hockley (B18 7RL) Choose Time Slot Cost: £4 Extras: Pay balance of £25.00 on arrival at club Cost is £29 – PAID AS - £4 deposit to Spice to book. Balance of £25 to club on arrival (no credit cards)
Members only (no guests) for security and due to limited numbers Includes approx 50 rounds of ammunition Choose Arrival time when booking (4 each at: 1.45pm, 2.45pm or 3.45pm) This is an extremely sought after Spice event, and we have recently revised the format with staggered timeslots to minimise waiting time. You are welcome to stay for the whole afternoon if you wish, but this way, you know when you will be on the range rather than having to wait your turn. With extremely tight firearms laws, it is rare to find opportunities for our members to fire live ammunition. However, under close expert supervision, here’s an opportunity to fire Western Style Lever Action Rifles (like John Wayne used!). They are 357 Magnum Calibre, but recoil is similar to that of a full power spring action air rifle, so you don’t need to be built like a cowboy! After booking in (bring photo ID such as passport or driving licence), we will have a safety talk including range rules and weapon handling safety and etiquette. We’ll then be introduced to our weapons and have time honing our skills on the range. There will be 4 instructors, so 4 people can be shooting at any one time, as the rules dictate that tuition has to be 1:1 when you are using this class of rifle. Depending on what is going on on the day, we should be able to meet other club members and learn about their firearms. Afterwards, we can relax in the club bar. Important Notes: This event must be approached with respect and in line with firearm legislation. Anyone who is not judged to be of sound mind or is suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol will not be allowed to take part. If you think that anything in your past might prevent you taking part (eg ex offenders) then please check your eligibility under section 21 of the Firearms Act. By law, we will need to pass your name and address to the Club at least 48 hours before the event (so we cannot take late bookings). Despite all this regulation, please be assured that our hosts are friendly people, passionate about firearms, who will ensure you have an enjoyable time!

A prize will be awarded to the best team at the end. On our trail we’ll be discovering the redeveloped docklands of Cardiff Bay, as well as its historical significance, and will walk through the newly created wetlands with their own unique habitat. You may have seen it on The One Show, BBC News or Blue Peter (if not click the links at www.zipworld.co.uk to watch them via YouTube!) So why should you travel to Wales for this one? Well, Zip World has the longest zip line in Europe and is claimed to be “the nearest thing to flying like Superman”. The Zip World site contains two specially constructed and spectacular zip lines, the first will take you down to the bottom of the quarry where you will pick up your specialised vehicle for a magnificent quarry tour, before zip lining back (one mile!) to the start. You will be going at speeds of around 100mph and you will be travelling 500ft above the mountain lake so be ready for a ride of a lifetime! How does our afternoon work: We will meet up for briefing and for kitting up with flying suits, helmets and goggles. We then get to experience “Little Zipper”, a mere 500 meters of fun that will whet our appetites for what is to come. At the base of “Little Zipper” we join our trucks (15 per truck) that take us on a guided tour of the quarry, ending at the very top. This is an exciting trip, using vertiginous quarry tracks from the days when hundreds of men worked quarried slate at Penrhyn. The views are dramatic. We eventually reach the summit and the mighty “Big Zipper”. This we descend one after another at approx 2 minute intervals. Be prepared to be terrified, invigorated and awed .. all at the same time!
Berkeley Castle Heirs Tour and Tea
Date: Thursday 27th August 2015 Place: Berkeley Castle, Gloucestershire (GL13 9BQ) 11.00am for 11.30am Tour Cost: £32 Berkeley Castle, an ancient fortress home where the Berkeley’s have lived since their ancestor, Robert Fitzharding, completed the Keep in 1153. Berkeley Castle is one of the most remarkable buildings in Britain and possibly the most outstanding example of medieval domestic architecture in the country. Where other Castles were romanticised or “modernised” by the Georgians or the Victorians, Berkeley quietly survived as what it is: a Norman fortress with an enclosing curtain wall, built and enlarged through the mediaeval period and beyond into a secure, comfortable, substantial home. We have arranged a special tour of the Castle by Charles Berkeley (heir to Berkeley Castle). On arrival we will meet up with Charles who will take us on a private tour and give you a full history of the Castle and some of his many family stories! After the tour there will be afternoon tea, a pot of tea, scones, jam & clotted cream with time to look around the gardens and butterfly house before closing.
Sailing Cross Channel Gosport-Cherbourg Peninsula
Date: Thu 27th Aug 2015 - Mon 31st Aug 2015 Place: Haslar Marina, Gosport (PO12 1NU) Arrive for 8.00p.m. on Thursday Cost: £399 Cabin Share, £419 (Deposit £80) Includes cabin share on board accommodation, diesel, wet weather gear, life harnesses, breakfasts, lunches, snacks and teas/coffees. Extras: share of mooring fees and evening meals taken ashore. On this cruise we plan to take advantage of the longer Bank Holiday weekend to venture southwards towards Cherbourg and the Channel Islands. This is a good time of year to cross the Channel because the weather is often good and we have the advantage of long hours of daylight. Sailing across the Channel and making a ‘foreign’ landfall is a special and memorable experience. Starting early in the morning enables us to maximise our time the ‘other’ side and gives you the opportunity to experience lighthouses falling away astern, identify ships by their lights, watch the dawn sky gradually approaching from the east and that first magical glimpse of the sun rising over the horizon. The crossing normally takes between 12 and 15 hours.
Spice Meet + Eat Social - Hole in the Wall
Date: Thursday 27th August 2015 Place: 2 The Grove, Queens Square, Bristol (BS1 4QZ) Hole in the Wall - Spice Table Time: 7:30pm Come on down to The Hole in the Wall tonight for a lovely, relaxed social evening. With a welcoming atmosphere and a great reputation for food and drink, The Hole in the Wall is named after a spy hole that enabled 18th century sailors and smugglers to keep watch for customs men and press gangs. The pub was prime recruitment territory for the Navy, you see, and men would wake up after an inebriated night to find themselves at sea. Of course, you're in safe hands now. Our Spice Host for this evening will be there to welcome you and help with the introductions, so don’t be shy about coming on your own. This is a social where you pay for your own drinks and food on the evening. As we are providing a Spice host and will need to book a space at the pub please book online to let us know if you are coming along. This social is replacing the club night social for the summer months to give you a change of scene and a chance to socialise informally with other Spice members.
Spice Meet and Eat - Cefn Mably Arms
Date: Thursday 27th August 2015 Place: Michaelston-y-Fedw, Cardiff (CF3 6XT) Cefn Mably Arms - Ask for the Spice Table 7:30pm Join Spice tonight for our monthly Meet & Eat. Every month we head to a new pub for a social night-out. It’s a great opportunity to come along, meet some fellow SPICE members over a drink and perhaps have a bite to eat – it’s entirely up to you. We’ll let the pub know we’re coming and anyone who fancies a meal can choose, order and pay on the night. If you’ve already eaten then just come along for the social chat and a drink. Everyone is welcome including established members, newer members and anyone thinking of joining SPICE. Book online (members) or drop us an email (non-members) so we know you’re coming and one of our Spice hosts will be there to meet you. Our venue tonight is The Cefn Mably Arms, a renowned country pub and restaurant with a history! The building dates back around 900 years, and became a public house some 150 years ago. The oak tree in the Car Park is thought to be one of the oldest, if not the oldest in South East Wales and was, we are told, planted the year after the building was completed. Inspections of the tree within the last few years have confirmed this to be the age. These days people travel far and wide to enjoy the atmosphere, real ale beers and of course the food, which is made completely by the pub and is not the typical pub food! Help Us Choose The Future Pubs: This event is designed for members to choose which pubs they would like to visit. If you know a nice pub that your fellow members would like then email the office with details and we’ll see what we can do for a future Monthly Meet & Eat. The pub needs to provide a good choice of food and ideally should be easy to find with its own car-park.

This walk involves a long steady climb, but we will walk at an easy pace with frequent stops. The walk will probably take between 2.5 and 3 hours.
