Stars Turn Out

Last year’s display On the Square gave our visitors a glimpse into local Freemasonry.

For a unique celebration of nature writing’s great individualist.

Whether it goes back to ancient Egypt, or was an 17th or 18th century invention, nobody quite knows. You would not normally expect Masonic symbolism in a painting that dates from about 1480. But The Wayfarer by Hieronymous Bosch tells a different story. The picture has been interpreted as depicting the Prodigal Son and the Wandering Jew. But one art critic noticed several Masonic features. The figure’s left trouser leg is rolled up and he is wearing a slipper. The straps of his rucksack resemble a cable tow. He is holding his hat which has a plumb bob for a decoration. The cloth on his head could be used for ‘hoodwinking’ in Masonic ritual. The gate towards which he walks has a curious right-angled square on the top, while this angle is repeated on the house roof and in other parts of the painting. Moving from left to right he could be seen to be journeying from west to east, leaving the worldliness of the tavern for

February 2013

a higher life through the gate. There the cow symbolizes peace and plenty, while the owl in the tree represents wisdom - all very Masonic. In The Hiram Key, authors Knight & Lomas describe the picture of an initiate as being dressed like a medieval heretic in front of the Inquisition. So it is possible to read too much into the picture, although Freemasonry was tantamount to heresy in some eyes. But if the Masonic aspects of the painting are accepted, it means that Freemasonry was active long before many thought it existed. If it is seen as a secret offshoot of the Knights Templar, the painting dates from only two or three generations after their demise. Basil Abbott

An impressive array of distinguished writers of nature and the countryside will be part of a celebration at the Diss Corn Hall of the work of the late Roger Deakin, who would have been 70 in February. Since his death in 2006, Deakin’s reputation as one of the Britain’s most original and best-loved writers of country life has become established. The Corn Hall event promises not only readings from Deakin’s writing, including his three highly successful books, Waterlog, Wildwood and Notes From Walnut Tree Farm but extracts from his highly-praised Radio 4 documentaries and rarely-seen TV films of East Anglian life made during the 1990s. Among the readers will be Ronald Blythe, author of Akenfield, Richard Mabey, whose Flora Britannica and Nature Cure have been bestsellers, and the awardwinning travel and nature writer Robert Macfarlane who is chair of this year’s Man Booker Prize judging panel.

Author Terence Blacker, who is putting the event together, says that the evening will be celebration of Deakin’s distinctive, and often very funny, view of his world. “There have been many events of discussion about Roger and his writing. This will be different and in a way unique. It will be by him – it’s all about his voice, his words, his way of seeing things. There has never been an event where the different strands of his work - writing, radio, TV - have been brought together.” Roger Deakin - in his own words is at 7.30pm on 9th February at the Diss Corn Hall. Newman & Co Real Time Information (RTI). Many employers will have recently received a letter from HMRC informing them of their mandatory enrolment in RTI, the new monthly reporting regime for those operating a payroll scheme. For some, this may represent a significant additional administrative burden, especially for those still preparing manual payroll records. If you are already using recognised payroll reporting software, you should receive an update in time for the change to RTI in April this year. However, whatever your situation, it is advisable to review you current payroll solution and consider whether external assistance is required either in an advisory capacity or to prepare your payroll for you and ensure RTI compliance.

Annual Investment Allowances (AIA’s) The autumn statement brought with it the good news that the Chancellor has increased Annual Investment Allowances from £25,000 to £250,000 for two years starting 1st January 2013. This represents an opportunity for those businesses with cash reserves or with access to finance to invest in their businesses and receive substantial tax relief. Careful timing of capital expenditure is required to maximise the tax relief from the increased allowances in both the current and subsequent tax years. Speaking with your tax advisers is therefore a must to avoid any wasted allowances. Wayne Goddard FCCA (Director of Newman & Co. Chartered Accountants)

Auction Alley

...is brand new, and we turn your unwanted items into cash for you!

The personal injury lawyers.

Auction Alley has just been launched by local husband and wife team, Chris and Denise Hammond-Webb.

Your questions answered……

Call us if you’re looking for some money! Now we have your attention, we ought to point out that we don’t provide free money, or loans. Sorry about that! Instead, Auction Alley make it easy for you, and for your business, to turn unwanted or unused items, old stock, tools or equipment, into cash. This is how it works. • We collect your items free across most of Norfolk and Suffolk (or you can deliver)

sell them mostly through Ebay, but sometimes through Amazon or Asos if your items are more suited to those websites. When your items have been sold, we package and post them to the new owner. You get paid the net profit. You may not have the time to do it yourself, or just don’t feel confident enough. You may not have a broadband connection. There are many reasons why householders or businesses ask us to make money for them on line. Auction Alley are expert Ebay sellers and everything we do is designed to get you the highest possible price for your items.

Question: I had an accident when I was driving my car on a narrow country lane and it collided with a car that was travelling fast in the opposite direction. The other driver’s insurance company have offered to settle the claim on a 50/50 basis and my solicitor is advising me to agree to do so as it was a head on collision on a narrow road. Is this correct? Answer: This is often the stance that an insurance company will take in such circumstances and it may well be appropriate for your solicitor to advise you to agree to this.

• You get paid!! It’s that easy!

In many cases, thanks to our ability to assist in correct valuations and write clear descriptions, we can attract better prices than if you had sold them yourself.

In a case where a collision occurred in the middle of the road and neither driver had any recollection of the impact and there were no eye witnesses, the court judged both drivers to be to blame and to be equally to blame.

We research your items to ensure they are properly valued. We take professional photos, write detailed descriptions, and

Call us for a friendly chat, or visit our website at www.auctionalley.co.uk.

This however should not be regarded as an absolute rule of thumb and the extent to which a driver is to blame will depend

on the evidence in a particular case and what inferences can be drawn from it. Relevant considerations in deciding upon the liability of each driver will depend on various matters including the speed of the vehicle, the extent to which the driver took evasive action such as braking and the visibility that each driver had. If one vehicle is stationary at the point of impact then that may be an indication that the other driver is more to blame. It is also important to consider what evidence is available. This may include the evidence of witnesses as well as the drivers, the area and extent of the damage to each vehicle, any investigation carried out by the police and in cases where the value of the claim is substantial it may be appropriate to obtain evidence from an accident investigation expert. If you have a question for our legal advice team you can submit it by email: enquiries@comercrawley.co.uk or in writing to: Chancery House, Victoria Road, Diss, Norfolk IP22 4HZ.

Enjoyed a Christmas Celebration on the 17th December partaking of lunch at the Bear Public House followed by a fantastic afternoon being entertained by the Discord Choir, lead by Michael Dann. There were as many in the choir as members of the club and the sound of so many happy voices singing carols and Christmas Songs filled the room. Song sheets had been handed out so all joined in. Unfortunately it

looks as if the Pensioners Club may have to close owing to the fact that no one has volunteered to take on the secretaries and chairpersons position from the retiring couple. Doreen and Pat have worked so hard over many years keeping it going. Nevertheless the December meeting was a very happy one. The January meeting was for the A.G.M. If you would like any information Mrs. Doreen Parker on 01953 456958 will be happy to oblige.

Attleborough Heritage Group The Heritage Room at Soma House, Station Road, Attleborough will be open on specific Saturdays in addition to the usual Thursday openings in January, February and March 2013. The dates are 2nd February, 2nd March and 6th April. This is to give those members who are not usually available on weekdays an opportunity to call in to the Centre. On 23th March the Group will be presenting another excellent illustrated talk at St Mary’s Church in Attleborough. This will cover the history of

pubs and breweries in Attleborough and surrounding villages. The event will begin at 7.00 for 7.30pm and tickets costing £5.00 for members and £6.00 for guests will be available from the Heritage Room from where further details may be obtained.

to such treatment? Sulking in self-pity? Grumbling against God for allowing this to happen. Not at all!! They were in fact praying for their persecutors and singing hymns despite the pain and facing an uncertain future. What was their secret? Believing in the risen Jesus, they were able to overcome negative feelings, giving a strong witness before the other prisoners. The same power that helped the Apostles to suffer joyfully is available to us! We urge you to seek His risen power for yourself!

It is a good time to get your payroll records up to date and maybe time to hand over your payroll and spend the time more effectively - it probably costs less than you think. So with payroll, VAT, company accounts bad debt management and company formations and more it is going to be a busy few months here at KBA and we love it. We really hope we can help you in 2013 with your accountancy requirements.

Supreme Bathrooms ....are pleased to announce that from January 2013 we will be able to supply a full home service with the arrival of kitchens and bedrooms to our already established bathroom business.

Norfolk & Suffolk Power Flushing Any of these symptoms in my advert could indicate that your central heating system has problems from internal corrosion, rust, sludge and scale.

This we feel will give our customer base the opportunity to purchase a kitchen, bathroom or bedroom through one established independent family local business based in Wymondham Norfolk.

Supreme Bathrooms can also offer a supply only alternative. If you have your own builder we can organise delivery of your new bathroom, kichen or bedroom at your own convenience.

This means our customers only have one port of call with their order, which leaves us to project manage all trades and labour involved in each installation contract giving the customer total piece of mind.

Why not get down to Supreme Bathrooms now to view our fantastic range where you can also book a free home survey if required.

The process involves connecting a power flushing pump to the existing central heating pump valves, or across the tails of a radiator.

This service will includes a home visit where we will measure your bathroom, kicthen or bedroom before discussing your requirements, which is then followed up by creating your design on our CAD system before offering you a complete package price to carry out all work.

Specialist chemicals are then pumped around the heating system to loosen and mobilise the unwanted debris.

Supreme Bathrooms have their own installation teams which take care of all trades including tiling, plumbing, electrics etc. Our showroom which currently displays around 80 bathrooms and showers will be refurbished in 2013 to accomodate kitchens and bedrooms to enhance our portfolio of products. We also have a large free car park.

A power flush can restore circulation and efficiency to your central heating system by removing these products.

Each radiator is then individually flushed until clean and on completion, an inhibitor is added to prevent further corrosion. The whole process is carried out with minimal disturbance and disruption. For more information or for a free no obligation quote, ring Paul on (01508) 532671 or 07879 414197. Or alternatively go to www.suffolkpowerflushing.co.uk.

Should you invest into ISA’s? Quite often the answer to this question is yes you should but please speak to us to make sure that an ISA is the most suitable product for you. Your ISA allowance is a ‘use it or lose it allowance’ as it can only be used in each relevant tax year.

1. New & Reconditioned Laptops

The limits can change each year and the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement indicated that the allowance will increase to £11,520 in the next tax year. The benefits of ISA’s are that the interest (cash ISA’s) and growth (equity ISA’s) is not subject to tax. Mostly everyone prefers investments with tax benefits so ISA’s quite often have an appeal. As the rules covering how much can be invested into a cash ISA (up to £5640) and how much of the total allowance can be invested into an equity ISA can be confusing, please speak to us if you need any help. New Year, New Smile! The Importance of Oral Hygiene for Your Pet. Imagine how your teeth would look and how your breath would smell if you didn’t brush your teeth regularly - it’s the same for your pet.

Regular plaque removal, at home, will prevent the start of periodontal disease and tooth-brushing is considered the single most effective method.

Unless you’re regularly providing some form of dental care you are neglecting an important part of pet care.

It is best to begin brushing from a young age, usually when a puppy or kitten is between 8 and 12 weeks although it is never too pate to start, even with geriatric pets.

If plaque builds up and is left untreated your pet may develop the following symptoms: • • • • •

Offensive breath Red, swollen and painful gums Tartar Loose teeth Difficulty eating

Periodontal disease can have serious consequences on your dogs general health such as effects on liver, kidney and heart. You will be surprised to read that by the time most dogs are 2 years old they have already developed dental problems.

periodontal disease. If you are at all concerned that your pet may show signs of the symptoms relating to periodontal disease then the first step would be to consult your vet. The Old Golfhouse Veterinary Group are currently offering free dental checks

with their nurses and if your pet does require a dental procedure (under anaesthetic) then during February all of our dentals will receive a 25% discount on the procedure (the procedure must be performed during February and the offer does not include any pain relief or anti-biotics).

There are also several effective chews available on the market and one that we recommend is a Stag Bar which is a natural, long lasting antler chew that cleans the teeth whilst also being kind to sensitive stomachs. It is important to use products that are specifically designed for pets. Diet can also be a major factor in the development of plaque and tartar. Generally, dry food is best for the removal of plaque. It is thought that canned foods may actually contribute to plaque build-up and subsequent

20 Millbank estate agents

Millbank Estate Agents Have Moved. Eighteen years ago Tony Beales acquired the well known and established firm of Millbank & Co located prominently on the corner of Connaught Plain in Attleborough; little did he know then that the business would be expanding eighteen years later into fully refurbished prestigious new 2 story offices with car parking. “When I took the business over in 1994 the country, as it is today was in recession, times were very tough and the economic climate was uncertain, with it being my first ever business venture I didn’t have a lot of money, so I kept costs tight with my sole ambition being, to get through the first year, survive, then reinvest in the second year, do the same in year 3 and see where I was at”. Following some very successful years from those early days, the business grew and grew, took on more staff and in 2008 Millbank Letting Agents was set up from a cold start and very quickly established itself as a front runner in the local lettings market, “this was the ideal

February 2013

time to enter the lettings market as the property market was beginning to stall and by the end of the year, the bank crash that followed then caused house prices to fall”. As the business continued to grow, especially on the Lettings side, it soon became apparent that the current premises Millbank were operating from on Connaught Plain was restricting natural growth, more room was needed along with more staff and more storage. “Obviously enjoying the location that Connaught Plain offered was a huge benefit and one I was reluctant to move away from however any planned expansion in Connaught Plain offices was going to be severely restricted due to the lack of space”. “Early last year I decided to look at some options about relocating the company to larger premises in the town but also making sure that it wouldn’t harm the business, as relocating can have a negative impact as I have seen before in

other towns I have worked in, in the past, the move had to be timed right and the location had to be right also”. “Once I had found the ideal premises, the initial idea had been to relocate in the autumn of last year but we were very busy on both sales and lettings, so it was decided to carry out the move in December, traditionally a quieter time of year. The refurbishment and renovations all went very well, a few surprises along the way which is to be expected, but all the tradesman and women I employed to carry out the improvement work were very sympathetic and grasped what I was aiming to achieve, I was very lucky that everyone I used in this project did an absolutely superb first class job and within the tight time constraints I place upon them, as the move had to be completed by the 12th December 2012, I think it’s fair to say that the quality of workmanship is reflected in how the office looks today”. Attleborough ‘s longest established estate agent, Millbank Estate Agents

now has a new home in Exchange Street, the light, bright and spacious new offices offer clients and customers the opportunity to feel relaxed in discussing their business, the feature rustic red brick facing back wall compliments so well the front office showroom with its well illuminated window displays which include 2 digital property screens scrolling all available properties, something unique to Attleborough Estate Agents. The new double fronted office provides a window exclusively for Lettings on one side and Residential sales on the other with lettings having its own office on the ground floor to the rear of the building. These new offices set the perfect platform for Millbank Estate Agents to move forward and add to the high standards they’ve already set and they look forward to welcoming clients old and new into their new office for a busy 2013.

Importance Of Touch

Mel Lotarius Hairstylist

By Lara Brown.

I started training 23 years ago with ‘The Cutting Garden’ Hairdressing Company.

Extensive research by the University of Miami’s Touch Research Institute has revealed that human touch has wideranging physical and emotional benefits for people of all age groups. In the Institute’s experiments, touch lessened pain, improved pulmonary function, increased growth in infants, lowered blood glucose and improved

immune function. Human touch is important for all ages, but by the time children reach their teen years, they receive only half as much touching as they did in the early part of their lives. Adults touch even less. Senior citizens receive the least touching of any age group; they are more likely to live alone, which means they are less likely to have daily physical interaction with family members. Physical Effects; Researchers at the University found that touch with moderate pressure stimulates a cranial nerve that slows the heart rate and lowers blood pressure. This produces a state that is relaxed but more attentive. Touch also reduces stress hormones. In one study, medical staff and students that received massages for 15 minutes a day over the course of a month were more accurate and took less time on math performance tests than their counterparts who did not receive massages.

28 MOTORING REVIEW

www.DispatchMagazine.co.uk

Citroën DS5 DStyle e-HDi 110 Airdream By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist THIS IS a fine medium sized car - especially where looks and seating comfort are concerned. It’s just a shame the six speed electronic gearbox blights an otherwise decent drive. In auto mode my DS5 demo was a bit like a rocking horse sliding downhill. It rocked forwards then backwards every time it went up or down a cog. However, using the automated manual paddle shifts all was well, but that kind of defeats the object of having a car that’s meant to change gear without you moving any body part unnecessarily. While I’m in gripe-mode, I have to say that if you want a vehicle with a bit of a bite, then don’t bother with the e-HDi 110 model. It’s so sluggish - 0-62mph comes in a painfully slow 12 seconds. But, grumbles out of the way, and as I mentioned in the opener, the DS5 is a looker. If you want a French fancy with lots of interior frills and features too, then the Citroën will work for you. The driver-focused cockpit fuses the driving position of a coupé with the finesse of a Gran Turismo. Highlights include a wraparound dashboard and wide central

February 2013

Twitter: @carwriteups

console, whilst a tasteful analogue clock adds a touch of sophistication to the DS5’s interior. LED lighting appears throughout, bathing the controls in an ambient display of intermittent reds and whites. Acoustic treatments ensure a high-quality cabin atmosphere and insulation from road and wind noise is excellent thanks to laminated windows. Driven carefully (and let’s face it, how can you not drive this unhurried DS5 model sensibly?) then it’ll return up to 64.2mpg on an average run. This is partly due to the Airdream model’s Stop & Start micro-hybrid technology that reduces CO2 emissions by up to 15% when driving in congested areas. Other plus points consist of a three year, sixty thousand mile warranty and a maximum five star safety rating. So, would I pay £24,900 for a dawdling, fluffy, eco-hatchback? I suspect not; but my mind might well change if I get the chance to drive the DS5 mated to a manual gearbox. For me, even though the car’s slow on the uptake, the Citroën’s EGS six-speed gearbox is the real fly in the ointment of an otherwise wellequipped, attractive motor.
