Diss Museum How many people can say that they have met a real live Sherpa? I was telling someone about Diss Museum’s latest project, with its Tibetan input, and he said that he knew a Sherpa, who lived in Newmarket Road, Norwich!
and give a presentation about the plight of Nepal. Their charity, Nepal in Need, helps the people with primary health care, education and basic utilities.
So I contacted him and invited him to come to Diss Corn Hall at 7.30pm on Friday 1st July.
On Friday 15th July we were going to have the Dalai Lama’s London representative, Thubten Samdup, coming. But he dropped out. So we are trying to get someone of equal stature to give a fiery and candid account of what Tibet is like today.
Everest climber Cathy O’Dowd has already taken part in the museum’s Friends in High Places festival. Now another intrepid figure from the mountains will help to commemorate Thomas Manning’s 1811 journey to Tibet. Gyaljen Sherpa is from the ethnic group who inhabit the high places of Nepal. The term ‘Sherpa’ is also used for the local people employed as guides for mountaineering expeditions. They are highly regarded for their skill and knowledge. Gyaljen was, like Cathy O’Dowd, on Everest during the disastrous 1998 expeditions. He and his English wife Catherine, who met at Everest base camp, will show a film

Count Down To Our 10th Birthday! It hardly seems possible that 10 years ago this month my mum, Joyce Gaze, announced she was leaving the Diss Express along with Marilyn Scroggins, to launch a new magazine in Diss call DissPatch (later renamed Dispatch Magazine). I was amazed at her news, as I had assumed, wrongly, that she must soon be ready to retire. However, as many of you who met her will know she launched herself into her new role in her normal enthusiastic manner and established DissPatch Magazine in readiness for the first issue in September 2001. Having launched 3 further Dispatch Magazines myself since I bought the original Diss and Attleborough issue, I know, first hand, how hard it is to get a new magazine ready for publishing. As Mum was some 30 years old than I, I really do admire her for the hard work she must have put in, in those early days and the lead up to the first issue. Not only did she have to find the content for the magazine, she also had to set up a business in order to run it and find a team to help. 10 years on, it would have been great if she
could have witnessed the 10th birthday, and I often wonder what she would think. I hope she would be proud that I have increased the business from what it was to what it is now. I know she would have been saddened at the passing away of Marilyn, although I’m sure they are together again now, I also know she would have been extremely angry at other events Dispatch has been through over the last 2 years. If the next 10 years go as quickly as the last 10, I’d better get on at growing the business further, launching new Dispatch Magazines into new areas and developing the brand into new media’s to ensure Dispatch Magazine remains the favourite Community Magazine in Diss, Attleborough and beyond, which was always Joyce and Marilyn’s goal! Comercrawley Your questions answered... Question: I had a car accident a couple of years ago and suffered a whiplash injury to my neck. I settled my claim for £1,500 and thought at the time that this seemed a reasonable amount. I have recently however spoken to a friend who told me that he received almost double the amount that I did despite recovering from his whiplash sooner. Does this mean that I should have received more for my claim? Answer: Further information would be needed to advise you as to what would have been a reasonable settlement value for your claim. The mere fact however that your friend’s claim settled for a higher amount does not indicate that your claim should have been settled at a higher level. It is not possible to make a simple like for like comparison in personal injury claims as each claim will be valued and settled on its own individual and specific circumstances. The most likely explanation for the differing amounts of compensation is that your friend may have suffered more in the way of losses and expenses. A personal injury claim is made up of both compensation for the injuries suffered (known as general damages) and
compensation for financial losses and expenses (known as special damages). Each aspect of the claim will be valued and calculated individually however people will tend to talk in terms of the overall figure that they receive in compensation. Thus it is possible that your friend received a lower amount for the injury element of his claim but received a higher sum in total because his financial losses and expenses resulting from the accident were greater than yours. For example, both you and your friend may have had time off work following the accident but if you were paid in full and your friend merely received statutory sick pay this would explain a difference in the compensation payments as your friend could include in his claim his loss of pay.

A good time was had by all on 19th May when our members together with guests from Federation Office, received a warm welcome from Jean Sudron, our President, to a very special evening for Diss W.I. We celebrated our 90th Birthday with an excellent dinner from colourfully decorated tables and in each place a gift to keep as a memento. The party spirit was helped along by a very entertaining magician moving around the tables with tricks and laughter. As with all good parties we had a very special cake made and decorated by members. Jean was assisted in the cutting of the cake by long-time
For “younger” members a montage of photos collected over the years was on display dating back as far as 1941. This was very amusing for everyone but especially long-term members who could see themselves doing what the W.I. does best over the years. Also on display was the tablecloth we keep with embroidered signatures of past and present members. Thank you to our guests for helping to make it such a memorable evening and to all our members who in one way or another helped to make it possible. Our speaker for the monthly meeting was Ceri Sudron, a highly qualified and experienced paramedic for 12 years. Ceri kept us entertained for an hour of absorbing and often humorous information about her life in this service. She demonstrated the difficulty of moving quickly sometimes in limited space with very weighty equipment, some of the problems encountered with each call, the long hours, often through the night, the tragedies and sadness but then the joy of helping a mother deliver her baby safely. Ceri expressed such passion and dedication for her job and ended by reading us a very moving poem which expressed all that she had left us thinking about. We look forward to our next meeting with a demonstration on reflexology. Meetings are held at Diss Methodist Church Hall on the first Tuesday of each month starting at 7.30 p.m. New members and visitors are very welcome to join us.

On May 29th, approximately 2,000 people visited the Red Feather Club for its Grand Open Day with military vehicles, re-enactors including the mules of the Burma Chindit group, ’40s dancing and an aerobatics display by a WW2 “Jumpin Jacques” is a P-51 Mustang. Among the visitors were a group of bikers who rode down from Cromer in Norfolk to present the association with a cheque for £120. On May 27th, a trio of WW2 veterans from the US, unveiled a memorial to the bomb group at the 95th Bomb Group Heritage Association-run Red Feather Club in Horham, which is the official UK museum of the bomb group. The veterans – S/Sgt Ray B Waters a tail gunner, Lt Herbert Wilkov a navigator and S/Sgt Benjamin Roujansky a radio operator – were joined by RAF Lakenheath Wing Chaplain Lt Col Bruce A Arnold and a F15E Strike Eagle pilot, Lt Col Brent R Vosseller, recently returned from a tour in Afghanistan, for the emotional dedication of the memorial. The veterans are part of a 20-plus reunion tour of Americans organised by the 95th Bomb Group Heritage Association and the 95th Bomb Group Memorials Foundation in the US. On May 27th, the new-look museum, which features only 95th Bomb Group items, was unveiled to the visitors who presented the association with a “missing man flag” to commemorate all those lost. Along with additional displays of clothing and equipment, the revamped museum includes recently acquired audio visual displays showing rare wartime colour footage of the B-17s flying in formation, the Flying Fortresses over both Stradbroke & Horham, the Horham airbase itself, some famous and unknown airmen on the base and footage of London during the war. On May 28th, the 95th Bomb Group Hospital Museum in nearby Denham held
The award-winning Air Cadets from 1070 (Diss) Squadron presented the colours – the Stars and Stripes, their own standard and the 95th banner to the veterans on Saturday followed by speeches from among others Benjamin Roujansky and Lt Col Vosseller. 95th Bomb Group Heritage Association chairman James Mutton said: “It really was an amazing open day – probably our best yet and it was really great to see the veterans with the young Air Cadets. It was something special.”

At nearby Denham Village Hall – the former base guard room – there was an exhibition by renowned wildlife artist Mark Chester and that evening at St Mary’s church at Horham, there was a special evening service, with an address by Lt Col Arnold. The award-winning Red Feather Club is at Horham, Suffolk (IP21 5DG), four miles south-east of Eye. It offers a unique experience in a 1940s WW2 NCOs’ social club and visitors say it is like “going back in time”. The museum houses only 95th Bomb Group items such as uniforms, photographs and memorabilia. Regular open days are held on the last Sunday of every month during the summer (May to October inclusive 10am-4pm). Membership of the 95th Bomb Group Heritage Association is £8 a year. H M Revenue & Customs have announced that they are planning yet another disclosure scheme, this time cracking down on individuals and businesses that are trading above the VAT threshold but have not yet registered for VAT. The VAT threshold is currently at an amount of £73,000 of sales in the last 12 months on a rolling basis, and, if your business exceeds this limit then it should be registered. There are various VAT schemes that make it simpler to calculate your VAT such as the flat rate scheme. We would strongly advise any business that is exceeding the VAT threshold to consider registering and, are happy to assist in dealing with any registrations, as well as preparing returns on your behalf. Diss U3A Report of Diss U3A June meeting. Due to the indisposition of our June speaker there was a change to our advertised talk. We were fortunate to be able to secure, at very short notice, the services of Richard Gibson from the Memorial Museum of the 100th Bomb Group (Station 139) Thorpe Abbotts. Richard’s illustrated talk showed the transformation of 500 acres of farmland to an operational USAAF airfield, home to 3,500 US personnel and the iconic B17 Flying Fortress bombers. The airfield which took just 1 year to construct was operational from 1943 to December 1945 and finally decommissioned in April 1956.
The years following were left for nature to reclaim until 1977 when a group of local people got together with plans to honour all those who served at Thorpe Abbotts. The original control tower now houses the museum and is proud to host regular visits from veterans and families who served there in World War 2. For further information please telephone 01379 642674. The Spirit Of Breckland Comes To Norwich Following on from the success of their summer exhibition at St. Margaret’s Church of Art last July, the Breckland Artists return with another exciting and vibrant two-week exhibition in July 2011. This year, Breckland Artists, a diverse group of 15 professional and exhibiting artists which includes painters, potters, sculptors and textile artists, delivers a new show that draws upon the spirit of Breckland. Breckland Artists are a diverse group, living and working in the south west of the county, who originally got together following participation in the Norfolk Open Studios scheme nearly a decade ago. The group’s longevity and appeal owes much to the diversity of subject matter and the range of techniques employed. Roger Gamble, Chairman and one of the founder members said, “Breckland is a special place for many of us, influencing our work, and I am sure that those who visit our exhibitions take away something of the spirit of place that is present in the art we create.” He continues, “Members have been included in, and won awards in, major national and regional exhibitions and we continue to deliver a vibrant body of work.” The work produced by three of the group’s new members underlines the influence of

the Breckland landscape on their art. Milly Welby, a sculptor, illustrates the strong connection between her work, its sense of place and the act of artistic creation. “My work stems from a core belief that there is beauty in everything and that through our senses we can discover this truth. To work in stone outside in the elements allows me to experience this belief first hand. To hear the sound of the chisel on stone, to feel the shape emerging and the textures change under my hands, to smell the dust in the air and the orange oil of mason’s polish in the final preparation, and finally to stand back and see what is emerging from the stone and my imagination.” For Malcolm Jarvis it is the clarity of the Breckland light that provides his motivation. Working in pastels, Malcolm utilises the nature of Breckland as his starting point, distilling the essence of the scene to produce his finished piece. Helen du Feu, a painter, uses patterns found in nature to create abstract or semi-abstract work in vibrant acrylic. “In my work I try to invoke the spirit of a place, both imagined and remembered, rather than the place itself. I
like to think of my paintings as landscapes of the heart.” The Breckland Artists’ show will be held in the fine space of St. Margaret’s Church of Art, located in St. Benedict’s,

Families Get Messy In Diss More than 20 people attended the first Messy Church in Diss that was held at the United Reformed Church on Saturday June 11th. People of all ages spent the morning involved in a number of ‘messy’ activities celebrating the Church’s Birthday at Pentecost.

Messy Church is now found in over 12 countries and is a new initiative to explore how families can get together and be a church without having to cope with traditional Sunday morning church services.

New Additional Paternity Putting The Leave Regulations Come Finishing Touches Into Force
By the time you read this all the hymns for the biggest summertime sing in Diss will have been collated and set into a top ten of the most requested favourite hymns.
The Additional Paternity Leave Regulations 2010 are now in force, applying to parents whose children were expected in the week beginning 3rd April 2011. The concept behind the Regulations is a simple one: eligible employees (usually fathers) will, in effect, be entitled to use the mother’s remaining maternity leave if the mother returns to work before using up all of her entitlement. Fathers will be entitled to up to 6 months’ leave (in addition to other leave, such as parental leave) which can be taken during the period from 20 weeks after the child has been born up until the child’s first birthday. The Statutory Paternity Pay rules have also been amended, meaning that if the mother returns to work before using her full 39 week entitlement of maternity pay, the father can claim Additional Statutory Paternity Pay for the remainder of the 39 weeks. Employers will need to familiarise themselves with the notification requirements an employee must comply with before taking
leave and claiming pay, and amend their handbooks and policies accordingly. The requirements include obtaining a ‘declaration’ from the mother confirming that she has returned to work and providing various details such as the address of her employer and her national insurance number. The intention behind the rules is to provide parents with greater flexibility, but whilst many employees will no doubt welcome this, it remains to be seen how widely the new rights will utilised. Some fathers may take a purely financial outlook, and will utilise the rights if the mother would earn more than the father by going back to work. Attleborough Town Council Noticeboard Monthly Update. Glass Recycling The glass recycling facility at Station Road has earned the Town Council an annual recycling credit of nearly £150 from Breckland Council.
Attleborough Town Council – New Members Following the scheduled parish elections in May there were thirteen nominations for the fifteen available seats on the Council.
Townsfolk are thanked for being both environmentally aware and in the process helping to generate much needed funds to the town.
At the Council meeting held on 6th June the two remaining vacancies were filled by co-option and the Council duly welcomed Edward Wright and Geoff Ellis on board.

Attleborough Town Twinning Association Attleborough Town Twinners let the strain take the strain - again. Members of Attleborough Town Twinning Association recently made their seventh visit to the town’s twin community of Nueil-Les-Aubiers in France. The journey began at Attleborough Railway Station on the morning of 1st June and ended, some hours later, at Angers Railway Station. Where the party was met by the community minibuses to take them to their host families in Nueil-Les-Aubiers. The French Committee had arranged a
packed and varied programme of events including days out to beautiful La Rochelle and Fontevraud Abbey – last resting place of Richard the Lionheart - and of course, some obligatory wine tasting. The weather was glorious. As usual, the hospitality was excellent and the French group’s warmth and friendliness put everyone at their ease. Old friendships were renewed and new ones forged. Once more the traditional Pétanque match (and the cup) was won by the French and this,
despite extra training before the party, left Attleborough! We very much look forward to welcoming the Nueil-Les-Aubiers group when they return to Attleborough next year. Attleborough Sainsbury’s Raise Money Amateur Boxing Club For their charity of the year.
Emma Dolan from Attleborough Amateur Boxing Club is the new ABAE National Junior Champion at 38 – 40 kg. Emma boxed at the 2011 ABAE National Female Championship final on Saturday 11th June which was held @ Mansfield Civic Centre where England’s best Juniors boxed in a bid to be crowned 2011 National Champion. Emma totally outclassed her opponent Niamh McGucin from Beringsfield, Oxfordshire, and won by 30 points to 16 and becomes only the 2nd female from Norfolk to become a Female ABAE Champion. Emma (aged 13) from Mattishall goes to Dereham Nethergate School and has been boxing at Attleborough ABC for
just over a year and has been training 5 days a week in the run up to the Championship. Emma has had 7 competitive bouts this season, winning them all, including winning a Gold Medal at the International Tournament in Tampere, Finland. Head Coach at Attleborough ABC, Jonathan Dennis, puts Emma’s success down to hard work & determination and said it was also an extremely proud moment for the club to have gained National success in a comparatively short space of time.

Digital Switchover Is This November Do you know what it means for you?
At Harleston Information Plus we didn’t really know what was going on so we got in contact with the Digital Switchover Outreach team. They have trained our information centre volunteers and given us literature about the changeover. Don’t leave it until the last minute, if you are unsure about what is happening call into Harleston Community Information centre, we can talk you through the process. On 17th September (2pm) there will be an open Over 60s meeting at King Georges Hall, Harleston where the switchover process, and support available to help householders make the change, will be fully explained. This meeting will be open to all. The Red Cross Norfolk Coastal Centre for Independent living. Peter Mc Guinness Project Development Worker for the above centre came to the Harleston Information Plus National Carers week tea.
He spoke to carers about the work of the Red Cross equipment loan service and their independent living centre. The centre offers a free advice service to Norfolk residents seeking equipment to help with everyday living. They have showers, baths, hoists, bath seats, stair lifts and much more that members of the public can look at, and try, to decide what would suit them best. Qualified occupational therapists are on hand to explain how equipment works and advise on what may be most suitable. Harleston Jobs Club Every Wednesday between 10am – 12pm, everyone welcome. Over the last 4 weeks we have had an average weekly attendance of 10 members at the Jobs Club coffee morning and we have welcomed 4 new members. We have helped: • 5 of our members secure employment • 2 of our members move into voluntary work to gain new skills • 4 members with their CV • 5 members receive careers advice Our Adult Education courses are well underway. A group of learners have already completed one of the courses - Choosing a Healthier Lifestyle, and the other courses are currently in progress. Finally, we would like to welcome Cherry to our volunteering team. Cherry has been volunteering with the Information Centre for sometime and has moved over to help with the Jobs Club. The post became available when Jake (who has been volunteering with the Jobs Club from the start) moved on to work for the Information Centre. You will be missed, but many congratulations!

Summer Bedding Summer bedding plants are a great way of filling your garden with lots of long lasting colour. There are so many bedding plants available, here are a couple of my favourites. Geraniums - they will flower right up until the first frosts of the year and are available in a huge range of colours and sizes. They are real sun lovers and are quite drought tolerant, they are ideal for that very ‘hot spot’ in your garden. There is a trailing geranium that is fantastic in hanging baskets, again giving lots of colour over a long period. Fuchsias are small shrubs that also have a really long flowering period, again up until the first frosts. They flower prolifically and don’t need dead heading. They like the sun but are equally happy in dappled shade. The list of Fuchsias is endless, there are hundreds of varieties to choose from. There are upright bush types, trailing (great for tubs and baskets) and there are hardy varieties that survive through our winters. There is even a climbing fuchsia (Mrs. Boothby).

Horticultural Society Martyn Davey, from Easton College and regular contributor to the EDP’s gardening pages, was the speaker at the Attleborough and District Horticultural Society at their May meeting. His subject was ‘Propagation’, a subject that he approached in a relaxed and often humorous way. Starting with the basic principles of growing from seed he then went through the use of softwood, semi-ripe and hardwood cuttings to produce more plants.

Family Fun & Dog Show
July sees the return of Redwings Horse Sanctuary’s annual Summer Open Weekend at their headquarters in Hapton, Norfolk.

The site only opens to the public twice a year so it’s a chance to catch up with what has been happening at the UK’s largest horse sanctuary. And this year the charity has added the extra fun ingredient of a Great Cake Bake, which keen cooks are invited to enter! On Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 July, Redwings headquarters at Hapton, near Long Stratton, will open its gates to visitors from 10am to 4pm each day. Redwings’ 350-acre headquarters is especially beautiful and is home to its Horse Hospital, Parklands Re-homing Centre and administration offices as well as more than 300 horses, ponies, donkeys and mules. This year the charity is also holding a Great Cake Bake across all its visitor centres and visitors to the Hapton Open Weekend are encouraged to join in. All you have to do is bake or decorate a cake and bring it along at the Weekend to win a prize! Cakes will be raffled off in aid of Redwings and there will be prizes for Best Traditional Cake, Best Creative Decoration and Best Cupcakes or Cookies.
Join us for our Dog show, nurse checks and equipment demonstrations, including endoscopy, Xray & darting.
All cakes will be judged on appearance, not taste, so the more creative the better! The weekend will also give visitors the chance to help celebrate the birthday of a very special little resident, Lewis, who is now one year old. Last year two lucky visitors were given the chance to hand-feed baby Lewis who was orphaned as a young foal and had been hand-reared by the Redwings staff with help from surrogate mum, Shetland pony Gretel! All the funds raised from the Great Cake Bake will go towards helping Redwings care for rescued ponies like Lewis and Gretel.

If you do go out, wear a hat and keep to the shade as much as possible. It’s very important to use sun screen of at least factor 15. • If you are travelling by car or public transport always take a bottle of water.

Our service provides transport either by social services or our own transport for our guests. Freshly cooked meals which are cooked on the premises are also provided to our guests.
