All The Fun Of The Fete Diss Museum This month of June St. Mary’s Church Diss holds its annual fete in the large well kept gardens of the Rectory in Mount Street.
The big event this month is the visit of climber Cathy O’Dowd to Diss Corn Hall on Saturday 4th June.
I am informed by the organisers that there will be many stalls including games so on Saturday 25th June from 2pm till 4.30pm you will be able to have an enjoyable afternoon and admission into the gardens is free.
given by Pam Hart and friends who will be singing songs from the shows.
I wanted to get an intrepid traveller of today to match the exploits of Thomas Manning in reaching Lhasa in 1811.
Whilst there why not buy a delicious cream tea and listen to a trio playing from the Diss Salvation Army Band, you will also be entertained at some point with children from Diss Junior School singing to you.
Friday 24th June is this months Lunchtime Concert at 12.30pm in the shape of a piano recital by Stephen Markham.
There is a raffle, tombola and an ice cream stall and if you want to just sit and enjoy a cup of tea in these lovely surroundings. Go on give yourselves an afternoon treat. Also earlier in the month is a concert in church on Saturday 18th June at 7.30pm
Dispatch June 2011
You will need tickets for this occasion priced £5 or £4 concessions either on the door or from the parish office.
So once again this parish church of Diss really excels itself in the entertainment it supplies and if you think that’s a busy month just wait for there’s a lot more to come through the summer months just watch those notice boards as more entertainment draws near. Gerry Hosking.
At the Edinburgh Festival I saw Cathy’s husband Ian Woodall giving a presentation about Everest and got an impression of just how dangerous it is. They were members of the South African expeditions; and Cathy was the first woman ever to climb the world’s highest mountain from both sides. She is also an inspirational speaker and would normally cost the earth when motivating people at corporate functions.
She and her husband now live in Andorra, probably to be near the Pyrenees, but she travels widely and is touring England this year. When I contacted her she offered to come for just expenses, to help the museum. This is one special lady and she ought to pack the Corn Hall. Tickets are only £5. Call the Box Office on (01379) 652241. Next month, also at the Corn Hall, we have A Real Live Sherpa (1st July) and the Dalai Lama’s London representative, Thubten Samdup (15th July). They also asked for just expenses. Basil Abbott.

Diss Family History
Diss W.I.
Our talk “Suffragettes, Census and the Sidney Street Seige” concentrated mainly on the year 1911, which was probably one of the most interesting years for which we currently have census details.
May Meeting. At our May meeting Jean Sudron our President introduced Sue Ovenden, Financial Officer for Norfolk Federation and a W.I. Advisor. Sue had been invited to advise us on the proposed resolutions which will be voted upon at the National Federation AGM in Liverpool next month. The two resolutions she informed us on were Mega Farms and the Closing of Libraries. Sue presented a very fair argument for both subjects and it was apparent from her informative and interesting talk that she had researched both thoroughly. We followed on a lighter note with a musical quiz and finally invited Sue Ovenden to judge our monthly
competitions. A full and entertaining evening which was well attended. On Thursday 19th May we celebrated the 90th Anniversary of Diss W.I. with an evening party at the Park Hotel. We were reminded that the next monthly meeting was to be held on Tuesday 31st May as a number of members will be at the National AGM during the first week in June.
The Suffragette movement started as early as 1897 and disrupted the numbers in the 1911 census because an unknown number of women deliberately refrained from registering their details; they finally achieved suffrage on the same terms as men in 1928 and our speaker referred to a number of stages that were gone through over the years until this aim was finally achieved.
The Sidney Street Seige also took place in 1911, although it started with an attempted burglary of a jeweller’s shop in December 1910 involving the murder of two policemen.
The 1911 census was commonly known as the Fertility Census, because it was the start of the collection of details about the family.
Betty Morley.
Our next meetings is “The Second Boer War” on 14th June, which start at 7pm at Diss Methodist Church and everyone is welcome to come.
Meetings are held at Diss Methodist Church Hall on the first Tuesday of each month starting at 7.30 p.m. New members and visitors are very welcome to join us.
Diss Decorative & Fine Arts Society A Tale of Two Cities. The Lecture before the Easter Holiday was given by Dr Paul Roberts of the British Museum. A favourite of Diss DFAS, Paul’s presentation was lively and very comprehensive with excellent quality images. He traced the establishment of Athens and its influence on Rome and of both cities on our own culture. Starting in Greece in the 6th century BC, this rapid but detailed history illustrated every major period and influence in the life of Athens through to the arrival of Romans roundabout 100 BC. Paul looked at the history of Rome up to this point and the strong cultural overlaps. This led seamlessly to the period of Rome supremacy and showed the important legacy of both cities.
All through the illustrations and style were first class engendering gasps of recognition and discover from the enraptured audience. Even his challenges to the listeners on their own knowledge were well received. On a glorious spring day no-one resented leaving their gardens for this performance and the special attention given to our youngest guest by Paul afterwards will stay with that 9 year old all his life. The June Lecture is on Tuesday, 21st June 2011 at Royden Village Hall at 2.15 pm. The Speaker will be Frances Hughes on “The Master” – Noël Coward as writer, actor & painter.

Why You Should Make A Lasting Power Of Attorney There may come a point in the future when you are unable to manage your own affairs. This may occur at any stage in life and may be brought on by physical illness, mental illness or simply old age. If this happens it is often a distressing time for both you and your family. To avoid uncertainty and ensure that your affairs are in order you should consider making a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). A Lasting Power of Attorney allows you to appoint one or more people that you trust to make decisions for you in the future should you become unable to manage your affairs. Before it can be used a LPA must be registered at the Office of the Public Guardian. Lasting Powers of Attorney can only be made when you have the mental capacity to make them….do not leave it too late. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that you should consider making: 1. A Property and Financial Affairs LPA. This allows you to appoint one or more people (your attorneys) to manage your finances and property. This will allow your attorneys to deal with day to
day correspondence, obtain money for your use, collect your benefits, pay your bills and sell or rent your house. You can appoint your attorneys to look after matters whilst you still have capacity as well as when you lack capacity. 2. A Health and Welfare LPA. This allows you to appoint one or more people (your attorneys) to make decisions regarding your personal health and welfare. This could include making decisions about your day to day care, medical treatment and whether you should continue living in your own home or if it would be more suitable for you to go into residential care. Personal welfare decisions can only be made by your attorneys when you lack the capacity to make them yourself. With both types of LPA you can restrict your attorney’s powers and give them guidance on any matters that they should consider when making decisions on your behalf. If you do not have Lasting Powers of Attorney and you lose mental capacity
many problems can arise. If this situation occurs an application must be made to the Court of Protection in order for your affairs to be administered. This process can be costly and time-consuming and you will have no choice as to who is appointed by the Court to deal with your affairs. Remember... Your Will deals with matters
after you die but it is also important to make Lasting Powers of Attorney to deal with your assets and yourself whilst you are alive. For more information please contact Alisdair Liddle or Sophie Thurston on 01603 610481.

Horham Bygones Country Rally
The Summer Event...
Horham Bygones Country Rally – on Saturday June 11th 2011 from 10am until 5pm – looks as if it is going to be bigger and better than ever this year.
For the evening of Friday, 1st July, Adrian Bloom has generously made available to the Bressingham and Fersfield parish community, the beautiful Bressingham Gardens, a selection of Steam Museum rides and a cafe area, which will enable the community to hold a very special ‘Summer Event’.
Originally started in 2002 as a one-off to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee the rally has gone from strength to strength and become an annual feature in the small Suffolk village of Horham between Eye and Stradbroke. The event regularly attracts 100 historic tractors. The tractors and other farm machinery join historic military vehicles, stationary engines, cars and motorcycles as well as working horses, mules from the Burma Mules Tribute, demonstrations of crafts from New Reeding Woods Group and working fire engines. As well as being a big draw for anyone who wants to see old farm machinery and horses in action it is also big fun day for all the family as there should be fairground rides for smaller children and a variety of stalls. Last year more than 3,000 visitors flocked into the village. Not only does the event generate much needed funds for the Horham Community Council it also offers
charities, including the Royal British Legion and East Anglian Children’s Hospice, the opportunity to attend, free of charge, in order to promote their organisations and raise funds. There will be many local caterers – from ice creams and coffees to burgers and hog roast. There are also trade stands and bric-a-brac stalls. Horham Bygones Country Rally is on Horham & Athelington Recreation Field on the B1117 between Eye and Stradbroke. Admission: adults £4, concessions £2, family ticket £10, accompanied under 5s free. There will be free parking with a dedicated disabled parking area. Contact for rally information: Gary Woodrow 01379 740496 or Don Moyes 07894 903829. Visit www. horhambygones.co.uk/ for more information. On Sunday there will be a road run in aid of the East Anglian Children’s Hospice.
Adrian Bloom’s Support for the Bressingham and Fersfield Community. Evening of Friday 1st July, 5.30-9.30p.m.
The price for each admission ticket (Adults £5, Children £2) will include car parking, some rides on Museum attractions and access to the evening’s specially organised entertainments and stalls. In addition to the splendid gardens and permanent facilities, we will be providing a bar, sideshows, music, drama items and a grand draw. Other ideas will be very welcome, and if you would like to organise/help with an item for the event, please contact ALLAN (01379 688452) or BRENDA (01379 688375). Organisations, businesses or other individuals wishing to organise a stall for their own profit may do so for
a cost of £25 (to include one admission pass - please note - cars can ONLY be parked in a designated car park area) and should contact ALLAN as above. Funds raised will be divided into three equal amounts for Bressingham County Primary School, Bressingham and Fersfield Village Hall and the local churches (Bressingham Methodist Chapel; St. John’s, Bressingham; St. Andrew’s, Fersfield). We need everyone’s support to ensure that Adrian’s generous gesture enables us to hold an enjoyable, memorable, (and profitable!) event that has something for everyone. If you are able to take part in any way (preparation, at the evening itself, organising a stall or sideshow, car park direction, selling admission and draw tickets and so on) please do get in touch with Brenda as above as soon as you can. We are holding regular meetings in the Village Hall between now and the event.
Diss U3A The ever entertaining Mark Mitchels was warmly received when he returned to give a talk at the May meeting on the life of Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, Britain’s first woman doctor. Although born in Whitechapel in 1836 Elizabeth Garrett’s family were well established in Suffolk and to where she returned in 1838 when her father bought a coal and corn merchants business (which would later become famous as Snape Maltings). Being the daughter of a prosperous businessman little was expected of the young Elizabeth other than that she should marry well and live the life of a lady. Her own expectations however were beyond this and 1860 following a meeting with Elizabeth Blackwell, the first American woman to become a doctor, Elizabeth Garrett decided that medicine would become her chosen profession. In 19th Century Britain this was unheard of and attempts to attend medical school were denied her as medicine was seen as a strictly male profession. Undeterred she enroled as a student nurse at Middlesex Hospital where once again she was barred from attending lectures intended for male students. A fortuitous discovery led her
to the Society Of Apothecaries, whose rules at that time did not bar women from taking their examination. In 1865 she passed her exam and obtaining her licence to practice opened a dispensary for poor women of London who were seeking qualified medical help. Following her marriage to James Anderson, Elizabeth was determined to obtain her medical qalification and in 1870 she attended the University Of Paris where she earned her degree. Undaunted by the British Medical Council’s refusal to recognise her success Doctor Garrett Anderson founded her own hospital for women and which was staffed solely by women. Her determination paved the way for other women and in 1876 an Act was passed allowing women to enter the medical profession. Until her death in 1917 Elizabeth Garrett Anderson remained a pioneer in both the world of medicine and the rights of women. For further information on Diss U3A please telephone 01379 642674.

Your questions answered...
New Guest Announced... John Hessenthaler of OEP Live! presents
Question: I recently had an accident and was injured when I came off my motorbike after it hit a pothole on the road. Can you please advise me about making a claim for compensation. Answer: The starting point in terms of advising you is to establish whether the pothole was on land which is publicly or privately owned (or, more specifically, maintained). Most pothole claims arise from accidents that occur on public roads and in such cases the claim is normally made to the local authority who are responsible for maintaining the road at public expense. The first thing that will need to be proven is that the size of the pothole (and most importantly its depth) was such that it constituted a hazard that should have been repaired. Photographs and measurements of the pothole are therefore important. The next stage effectively involves proving that the council were either aware of the hazard or should have been aware of the hazard through their system of carrying out regular inspections of the highway. Thereafter the council should act within a
reasonable timescale in terms of arranging for the repairs to the highway to be carried out. Councils keep records relating to the inspection and maintenance of the highway as well as records of complaints about the condition of the highway. Every case however is decided on its own individual facts and other relevant considerations include where the pothole was and whether there had been any previous accidents or complaints. If however the accident occurred on private land, then the claim will instead be made to the individual or organisation who owns or is responsible for maintaining the land. The law is different to highway claims but, in general terms, such claims can often be easier to prove as a private landowner would be expected to inspect the area more often and can also act sooner in terms of arranging for a pothole to be repaired (or sectioned off) once it has started to form. If you have a question for our legal advice team you can submit it by email: enquiries@comercrawley.co.uk or in writing to: Chancery House, Victoria Road, Diss Norfolk, IP22 4HZ.

Singing For Carers At four different places across this county there is an important charity which sadly is unknown to many people Cross Roads Care is an organisation who helps care for those who are carers to a loved one at home. If you are caring for someone at home or have been a carer in the past then you will know how essential it is to have a break from a job which can go on for years and years. Cross Roads have so many people awaiting help that they find it difficult to cope with the work load demand and like so many charities around the country are becoming short of money. On August 14th ‘The Big Sing’ returns to St. Marys Church Diss for its seventh successful year and I’m pleased to say that we will be supporting Cross Roads Care and
therefore I hope there will be a great turn out from you the general public supporting this lively evening and sing for the carers who do a wonderful job. Requested hymns have started to come in and if you want to contribute then take your request to Diss Information Centre then come and enjoy a great night. So put this date in your diaries and I will look forward to seeing you on the night. More about ‘The Big Sing’ next month. Gerry Hosking.

Felling By Joan Garnham, Waveney Tree Specialists.
Above: Alan Garnham being presented with his trophy by Andy Cambell. At the East Anglian Game and Country Fair in Norwich in early April was the East of England Tree Climbing and Felling Championships. This competition tests the skill and speed of the areas best tree surgeons. Alan Garnham of Waveney Tree Specialists once again is the East of England Tree Felling Champion. The first weekend in May saw both him and his son, Kristian, competing in the UK Championships in Devon. Kristian is now the UK Champion for speed changing the bar and chain on a chain saw, he did this in a mind boggling 13.74 seconds. To fell or not to fell, that is the question (apologies to Shakespeare!) Trees are plants like any other and no

matter how pretty the plant is, if it is in the wrong place we call them weeds. Trees are no different but because they have a greater impact on the environment there are laws regarding felling. This is quite right, if we felled indiscriminately the countryside would soon be denuded. Before making a decision it would be prudent to ask the advice of a recognised tree surgeon; this advice is usually freely given with no obligation attached. A good tree surgeon will be able to advise the best course of action. Whether the tree is diseased or threatening buildings or has overgrown the space. He will also find out if it is in a conservation area or has a Tree Preservation Order attached. Permission will be granted to work on the tree or remove it, depending on several factors. A good rule of thumb is to ask the question – is it dead, dying, diseased or dangerous? If none of these, but just too big for the garden, it is possible to reduce the tree to allow more light and to prevent overcrowding other trees. But beware; men with chainsaws can wreak havoc to a
beautiful tree. Just lopping the top off will encourage the tree to grow more quickly and the end result will be a lollipop even bigger than before. A good surgeon will keep the shape and bring it in to line with the rest of the garden. One of the biggest issues we deal with is ornamental trees that have grown too big and are stunting surrounding trees. Often the best policy is to remove it and plant another, this will give many more years of pleasure watching the new one mature and rejuvenate those around it. What about the stump? This is easily dealt with; most recognised firms have stump grinders. These literally chew the stump out without disturbing the surrounding ground and a new tree can be planted in the same place on the same day. We are fortunate to have a stump grinder that will remove a stump 3-4ft across in less than an hour. Expert advice is a phone call or e-mail away Tel: 01379 668 636 Mobile: 07990 801 388

PROMS IN THE PARK Proms Carnival Curtain Raiser The seventh annual “Proms in the Park” concert takes place on Saturday 18th June in the beautiful lakeside setting of Diss Mere and will be the curtain raiser for the town’s carnival the following day.
The first of these concerts organised by Diss Rotary, was in 2005 to mark the centenary of the founding of the Rotary movement. This year’s occasion just like last year also celebrates the crowning of the Carnival King and Queen. The main reason for the concerts is to provide an enjoyable evening out for the whole family to listen to the fabulous music of the South Norfolk Youth

Symphonic Band, whilst at the same time it provides an opportunity to raise money for deserving charities worldwide. Concert organiser James Kay said that it was normal for such events to be held to raise money for charity and any money that is raised this year will go to Rotary Charities which include the Air Ambulance, Quidenham Children’s Hospice and a project to provide clean water and sanitation for poor villagers in Zambia. Rotary President John Gallen is enthusiastic about the event. “Diss Rotary Club is delighted to be able to promote the annual Carnival with the ‘Proms in the Park’. It is an opportunity to thank all those who have supported the Club’s events and public collections during the past year, but also to be part of the fun. That really is
what “Proms in the Park” is all about’. SNYSB will again be under the leadership of Mike Booty and this year Chris Moyles and his team from Park Radio will be doing their bit to make the evening a great success. The Master of Ceremonies as usual will be the familiar Clive Sinfield. There will be a stand selling hot food and a bar to sustain the hundreds of music lovers who are expected to be there with flags aloft singing to the strains of Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory. There will be plenty of refreshments or if you prefer, bring your own picnic and some fine weather. Concert starts at 6.30pm, and parking is free all over town.
DISS CARNIVAL 2011 Diss Carnival 2011 Diss goes carnival crazy on Sunday 19th June, with a parade of floats and walking groups themed on fairy tales and nursery rhymes taking centre stage through the town centre. The procession starts from Roydon Road at 1pm and travels via St Nicholas Street, Market Hill, Mere Street, Park Road, Denmark Street and finishes in Shelfanger Road The fun continues at 2pm at Diss Town Football Club in Brewers Green Lane with a wide range of activities and events for all the family, presided over by the 2011 Carnival King and Queen Tom Harris and Hdia Nour.
The day starts in the town centre from noon with the Hoxon Hundred Morris dancing in Market Place and Melissa Hawkes and her line dancers performing at the Mere’s Mouth.
Almost 30 stalls will include food and drink, face painting, demonstration, games and community information. Static displays will include Harley Davidson motorcycles, vintage tractors
and hot rods with a world champion stock car driver in attendance.
More stewards and volunteers to help on the day are still needed.
Musical entertainment will be provided by local bands Easy Brothers, Twisted Piglet and Cataclysmics, supported by Park Radio.
To offer help, stewarding support or to find out more about how you can be involved, contact Carnival co-ordinator Doreen Collins, Tel: 01379 642018, email: doreencollins@btinternet.com
Popular children’s entertainers Bazza Bizarre and Steve Sausage will be performing and there is also a climbing wall, bungee trampolines, table tennis and the Black Belt Academy. Admission to the fun day has been kept at £3 (children under-16 free if accompanied by an adult). This year’s programme will be free of charge and circulated to all households in town before the big day.

Spooner Row Annual Village Fete
Another sell-out audience took a trip down Memory Lane when the Attleborough Heritage Group turned the spotlight on the town’s shops of yesteryear.

Owing to a strong demand for tickets, the group decided to restage the presentation given at St Mary’s Church Hall earlier in the year. Like the previous event a capacity audience of nearly 90 was in attendance on Saturday 21st May.

The group’s chairman Cliff Amos gave the talk, assisted by Roy Woods. With the aid of old photographs, advertisements and invoices, the audience was taken on a tour of the shops in Church Street, High Street and Exchange Street before going into London Road. Some of these seemed to sell everything and appeared to be the equivalent of today’s supermarket.
The group’s busy weekend of activities began with a well-attended coffee morning in the church hall on Saturday and concluded with an illustrated walk on Sunday, led by Mr Amos, featuring a brief history of St Mary’s Church and the buildings of Church Street and Queen’s Square.
Most of the businesses have changed in name and what they sold over the years. Although one of the many butcher’s shops has always been a butcher’s, although under various proprietors. Meat carcasses were hung outside for all to
One of the longest continuously named shops is A W Myhill electrical shop in Exchange Street.
We at Spooner Row work diligently throughout the year to raise funds to maintain and improve our Village Hall; we have recently re-surfaced the drive and car park and will shortly be putting in a beautiful new wooden floor. The Hall is one of the few facilities in the local area, serving Suton and Wattlefield as well as Spooner Row itself. We are always keen to see new faces both on the committee and at organised functions. It is a valuable and well used venue for school activities, children’s parties, ballroom and modern dancing, art, bowls, pilates and yoga.
There will be craft stalls, games, competitions, dancing display, local school and Church choirs, art exhibition, car boot sale, delicious refreshments - including local ice cream, teas and homemade cakes. For further details or to book spaces please contact Mavis on 01953 605569.
The group has other guided talks lined up throughout the summer and the Heritage Centre at Soma House, Station Road, Attleborough, is open every Thursday from 9.30am until 3.30pm.

Dying To Meet You! You deserve to die well – that was the message sent to Diss people from organisers of a series of taboo-busting workshops held during National Dying Awareness Week. ‘To do lists to help you Put Your House In Order’ which tackle subjects that many find difficult, such as Making a Will and Lasting Power of Attorney, making a funeral plan, planning for your future care and support and signing up as an organ donor.
Above: Richard Green from Rosedale Funeral Homes. Rosedale Funeral Home teamed up with leading law firm Steeles to host three free workshops, to mark Dying Matters Awareness Week providing free advice and guidance on issues surrounding death and dying. “In the next 12 months around 400 people in the Diss area will die and based on national statistics less than a third of those will have spoken about the sort of death and funeral they’d like,” explained Rosedale Funeral Director, Richard Green. “The aim of the roadshows was simply to make it easier for people to talk about death and dying. It’s not tempting fate to make plans and discuss your wishes with loved ones – it’s more about considering the inevitability and getting on with life.” As well as being able to talk to specialists from Rosedale and Steeles, visitors were also able to pick up free fact sheets, checklists and information booklets, all designed to demystify death and help people make informed choices. A range of resources were developed such as ‘Funeral party planning guidance’, and
These resources were available during the week, and Rosedale was giving away complimentary copies of their very special book entitled “When we remember”. This book provides an honest and sensitive guide to those planning a funeral and offers many gentle suggestions of poetry, readings and music, as well as advice for those trying to compose a tribute to be read at a funeral service. 80% of funerals in the UK are cremations, at an average cost of £2,546, yet 82% of people do not have a pre-paid funeral plan and 46% have not made any financial provision for their own death. More than 50% of all adults in the UK have not made a Will.

Keep Your Eyes On Jesus Great Ellingham Teddy Bear Festival A thought for the month from Malcolm Ryan, Pastor of Attleborough Baptist Church. Pioneer missionary William Carey once said, “Expect great things of God, and attempt great things for God.” The disciple Peter certainly did that. Do you remember the walking on the water incident? Who could forget! The Lord Jesus has been in the hills, praying alone. The disciples’ boat is quite a distance offshore, having been buffeted by the waves.
And Jesus goes out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples see him, they think he’s a ghost! But he says to them, “Take courage, it’s me.”
2nd – 17th July 2011.
“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replies, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he says. Then Peter gets down out of the boat and walks on the water to Jesus. But when he sees the effects of the wind, he becomes afraid and, beginning to sink, cries out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately, Jesus reaches out his hand and catches him. The Lord had said, “Come.” And Peter took the risk of stepping out of the boat. “Ah,” someone might say, “but he soon became afraid. Then he began to sink.” That’s true. But he did walk on the water. And although Jesus had to say, “You of little faith,” Peter still had a lot more faith than the other disciples. All he needed to remember was that when you step out in faith, you’ve got to keep your eyes on Jesus. Let’s remember to do that as this year continues to unfold.

Attleborough Probus Report The first meeting of this month was attended by 34 members; our Vice Chairman John Rogers opened the meeting by welcoming our speaker Jonathan Dutton whose subject was Antiques. Jonathan was head of antiques specialising in porcelain at Bonham’s, members presented various items for discussion and valuation and were given an interesting and in depth description of the history and back ground of their antiquarian items and the current state of the market on which many items of value had declined in value over recent years and some surprising things had increased dramatically.
Our Chairman announced that a cheque for over £300 had been sent to this year’s charity which was for Prostate Cancer. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks by John Lewzy to our speaker for a most interesting and informative talk. Our Probus Club meets twice a month at the Connaught Bowls Club on Station Road.

Tickets available in store and at Creations Hair & Beauty, Attleborough.
Their church leader Rob Tervet says “Too often the church appears boring and irrelevant but we believe that the church has some incredibly important things to say, particularly about the big challenges in life. We are asking local people to tell us ‘What hurts the most?’ ‘What’s the one thing in life that is hardest to handle?’ We will then respond to the 6 most popular answers in a series of talks. At Christ Community Church we believe there is hope and we want to share that hope”.

Adrian Stasiak, Breckland Council Member for Communities and Benefits said: “Our photography competition is now in its third year and it’s a great hit with residents. I’m always impressed by the level of talent displayed by competition entrants so I’m really looking forward to seeing what our residents come up with this year”. The Annual Breckland Photography Competition is open to all Breckland residents and photographs must be taken within the district. All images must be submitted in digital format by the closing deadline of 5pm on Friday 16th September 2011. Each of the category winners will receive £100 and the overall winner of the competition will have their photograph featured on the front page of Breckland Voice. The photographs will be judged by a panel of professional photographers including last year’s competition winner Paul Giverin.

The closing date for votes is Friday 6th August. The reality is we all face challenges that can make life difficult and at times painful but we believe there is hope. This survey is all about giving local people the opportunity to tell the church what life issues matter most to them. A series of talks later in the year will then respond to the six most popular topics - offering hope and help. Rob Tervet says “We’re really looking forward to hearing from local people about the challenges in life that hurt the most. We want to make a difference in the local community and this survey is just one way we can say to people ‘we care’.

Rainbow Sleepover Ten girls from 1st & 2nd Attleborough Rainbows joined together to take part in their first Sleepover event during Saturday 30th April and Sunday 1st May!
The excited girls arrived on Saturday afternoon at Great Ellingham Primary School to start the adventure. The activities for the weekend had been planned around the ‘Rainbows are Healthy’ roundabout. Once the girls had been on a tour of the accommodation, they settled down to make their own pizza and cakes for tea. While cooking was taking place, the Rainbows went outside for a picture hunt, a game of rounders and a chance to explore the playground, trim trail and pirate ship available at the school. After tea and washing up, it was soon time for a story and bed. Sleeping wasn’t high on the agenda, but eventually everyone settled down for a few hours rest!
26 Dispatch June 2011
The morning started bright and early with a pyjama parade followed by breakfast. After eating, the girls learnt about the importance of brushing their teeth and used blue disclosing tablets to show where they needed to brush. After brushing their teeth thoroughly, everyone came out with white smiles! For the rest of the morning, there was just enough time to sow sunflower seeds, play skipping games outside, eat a fruit kebab and sing a few songs before it was time to say goodbye. Thanks to young leader, Claire, and all the adults who helped to make the event a success. Thank you to Great Ellingham Primary School for having us! Recruitment Quality People
Job Interview Tips
We are based on Edenside Drive, in Attleborough Town Centre, only a minute’s walk from the free Edenside public car park.
Job interviewing never seems to get any easier - even when you have gone to more interviews than you can count.
All of our permanent vacancies are advertised in our window and on our website www.quality-people.co.uk whilst the majority of our temporary vacancies are filled directly from our database of people registered with us. Our service to those looking for a new job We offer a wide range of both permanent and temporary employment opportunities throughout the Breckland & South Norfolk area. To register with us is totally free of charge – you simply complete a registration form, which can be collected from our offices or emailed out to you. Return it to us with your CV (if you have one) and we will process your details onto our database.

Our service to Businesses To provide quality temporary staff to cover holidays, sickness, maternity and paternity leave, an additional workload of a specific promotion or project. To operate our full recruitment service, tailored to your specific needs, to supply you with permanent staff. To offer our “advertising only service”, where we will advertise your vacancy on our website, or in our window.
You are meeting new people, selling yourself and your skills, and often getting the third degree about what you know or don’t know. Here are job interview tips to help prepare you to interview effectively. • Pick out what you are going to wear on your job interview - After you choose your outfit, make sure it is cleaned and pressed and you have the appropriate accessories and shoes to go with it. • Research as much about the company as you can. • Arrive early for the interview. Plan to arrive for your interview 10-15 minutes before the appointed time. Arriving too early confuses the employer and creates an awkward situation. By the same token, arriving late creates a bad first impression.
• Have a good firm handshake. • Wait until you are offered a chair before you sit down. • Speak clearly and enthusiastically about your experiences and skills. Be professional, but don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through. Be yourself. • Remain interested and alert throughout the interview. • Be enthusiastic and show it in your replies and body language. • Stress your achievements. • Have questions of your own to ask the interviewer. • Follow up the interview with a thank-you letter. Employers regard this gesture as evidence of your attention to detail, as well as an indication of your interest in the position.

An interview with...
Ysobel, Jade & Dionne of S&M Personnel Three years on its going from strength to strength and we have employed Jade to oversee and build this division further.
Above: Ysobel, Jade, & Dionne of S&M Personnel. So, Please, tell us a little about yourselves? Ysobel: I was employed by S&M Personnel Ltd in June 2008 and was given the opportunity to manage our office in Watton just 10 months ago. I have had a varied career path over the years from general office through to sales, insurance and temporary contracts which have lead me in to recruitment industry with S&M Personnel Ltd. Having previously undertaken temporary work myself for nearly two years I feel my previous experience gives us an advantage when dealing with candidates new to the recruitment process, as I can relate to my own experience. Since working for S&M Personnel myself and my colleague Dionne have achieved qualifications in the Certificate of Recruitment Practice whilst continually growing our divisions and upholding our strong rapport with our Clients and candidates. I now oversee and manage the running of all of our divisions and have built up a strong team to which we are currently looking to expand, if you are looking for a change or would like to know more about working with us please contact me on ysobel@smpersonnel.com.
Dionne: I live locally and have worked for S&M Personnel Ltd for 3 years. Previous to this I worked for an estate agency in Dereham so I know the local area quite well. I feel that estate agency set me in good stead for Recruitment as it’s all about dealing with people & building good relationships. I was originally employed by S&M Personnel to launch the Industrial Division along with Ysobel. This took us about 6 months of permanent canvassing, approaching prospective clients and generally getting our name out there.
I am currently running the Driving Division providing all class drivers C&E, C, 7.5T and 3.5T for businesses in and around Norfolk and Suffolk. Jade: I am new to the recruitment industry having worked for S&M Personnel for nearly 8 months. I am originally from Felixstowe and I moved to Norwich 3 years ago. My career history has always been in sales from selling cars and mobile phones, through to gym membership, so joining the team at S&M Personnel seemed a natural progression and opportunity for me to progress and apply my strengths too. I feel I have an enthusiastic, fresh approach to my job and in my time at S&M Personnel I have built up a good knowledge of the local area along with the level of service our clients require by maintaining and building upon our strong relationships. I currently run and oversee the office and Industrial Divisions to which we are always seeking candidates for across the board.
Tell us a little bit about the S&M Personnel in general? S&M Personnel has been established since 2003. We have three main divisions: Driving, Industrial and Office. We moved to our offices in Watton 4 years ago and have a good presence on the high street. We currently employ an average of 100 candidates on a weekly basis across the 3 divisions.
”
We were very close last year and missed out marginally so watch this space... If Dispatch Magazine could grant you one wish each what would you wish for? Ysobel: More shoes!!! I love shoes!!! Dionne: - A large lottery win and continued sunshine all summer! Jade: Easy. Prince Harry!!
What would you like to see happening over the next few years? We are looking forward to growing our office in Watton, taking on more consultants & growing each division. We are hoping to supply an even larger coverage area and work more closely with our office in Loughton, Essex.
All: Of course, with regards to the company, we wish for lasting success and growth for the business and continued growing relationships with our clients and candidates.
We want to maintain and grow our client base and continue to provide a high class level of service and professionalism. This year we would love to pick up an award at the Norfolk Recruitment Awards.
I am currently seeking warehouse pickers, packers, production and general operatives through to office administrators if you are currently looking for work or a change in direction please send your C.V’s through to myself, jade@smpersonnel.com How does S&M Personnel differ to other Recruitment Agencies? We are an Independent Recruitment Agency. We pride ourselves on the service we provide to both our clients and candidates. We are not individually targeted or pressured and work genuinely and honestly because we care. We take time to understand all our client’s needs which in turn enables us to provide a first class service! We do our best to match suitable candidates to the work we have and have a very successful placement rate often having a candidate in work very soon after registration.

A class of 16 year olds have raised over £1000 for Help 4 Heroes over the last 18 months. 11ST from Thetford Grammar School have been very inventive and imaginative with money spinning ideas that have included ‘Pick n Mix’, to replace the much lamented Woolworths Pick n Mix in their schoolmates’ lives. ‘Cool the School’ which involved selling ice lollies to a grateful school during the heat wave last summer. ‘Waffles and Chocolate’ used the same idea but for the winter season, with people being able to have hot waffles and hot chocolate with chosen toppings to warm them during cold break times. Perhaps the most successful campaign, was ‘Roses and Chocolates’ when the form took anonymous orders for red roses and chocolates that were then delivered on Valentine’s Day. “We didn’t realise just how romantic people at Thetford Grammar School were until the orders started flooding in.’ said Daniel de Niet aged 16.
“Thetford Grammar School has always encouraged all their students to think of others and has a very impressive tradition of fund raising for a variety of charities.” said Mary Rolton, Head of Religious Studies “Each form chooses a charity to support over the school year. 10ST and now 11ST felt very strongly that Help 4 Heroes was an important charity and explained its work in a class assembly in front of the whole school.” The form has raised £1,035 since beginning their fund raising campaign. Last year they were able to present Head Boy, Ollie Gill with a cheque for over £600 to sponsor his extraordinary feat of completing 10 marathons in just 12 days last summer, in aid of the charity. This year, as the form start their GCSE exams, they will be presenting a cheque for £418 to Jacqui Blades, Norfolk’s H4H co-ordinator.

Feeling Lazy This Summer? Imperial Bathrooms And why not! It is not always necessary to punish yourself toiling under the hot summer sun to keep your garden looking its best. In fact, there are many opportunities to ensure your garden remains in tip-top condition throughout the year so you can spend time enjoying your ‘outdoor room’. Many techniques can be used to minimise the amount of work needed in the garden, such as retaining all planting beds, using lawn edging and applying a decorative surface on planting beds such as pebbles to retain moisture and add interest and texture. Similarly, by using hard-landscaping materials such as natural stone paving and hardwood sleepers that age gracefully over time adding their own distinct character to the garden, the heavy burden of responsibility is moved away from the plants that have traditionally been the central focal-point of the garden. The use of elegant, interesting and tactile materials within your garden adds a whole new dimension and contributes to the ease of upkeep without losing visual appeal. At Georgina Read Design & Landscaping we specialise in transforming gardens and our flexible approach means we can always meet your requirements for all aspects of landscaping. Stay Safe In The Sun Some people get a sunburn faster than others because of their colouring. If you have blonde or red hair, light-coloured skin, and light-coloured eyes, you’ll tend to get sunburn more quickly than someone with dark eyes and skin. Sunburns look bad and feel worse. They can cause blisters on your skin,
increase your chance of getting wrinkly when older and worst of all, they can lead to skin cancer. Because getting wrinkles and getting sick don’t happen right away, they can seem like things that could never happen to you. But you still need to be careful and always wear a high protection suncream.
