ATTLEBOROUGH Town Guide 2011-2012
INTRODUCTION
Introduction: Foreword In my capacity as Mayor of Attleborough I am deeply honoured to be asked to offer this introduction about our fine town. I, like many of those that are residents in our town, came from other areas and found one of Norfolk’s little gems and my husband and I decided to settle here 20 years ago. Attleborough as a town has both a long history and heart. It has a great community spirit which includes many unsung hero’s who organise activities, functions and fund raising events for the townspeople to participate in. The focal point of the town centre is Queens Square where the Town Hall is situated. Close by are shops, banks, cafes, public houses, hotels and also in close vicinity are local health services. Attleborough is an historic market town and our Market day is every Thursday. Attleborough’s historic Church is also worth visiting especially to see the rood screen. There is a wealth of clubs and societies and various activities that take place each year. Attleborough boasts one of the best Christmas Lights display in Norfolk which is switched on in conjunction with a wonderful Christmas Carnival. People travel from all over Norfolk to see the lights. At this point I should not forget our wide and varied local businesses which include light industry, transport, logistics, retail and hospitality. Whilst historically Attleborough is probably best known for its orchards and cider production, recognised locally by the Gaymers name. The town provides and maintains areas for public recreation through both Gaymer’s Meadow and the Recreation Ground in Thieves Lane. In addition to this there are a number of play areas situated throughout the town. Attleborough is located just off the A11 trunk road and is ideally situated in the heart of Norfolk, approximately 15 miles south of Norwich 15 miles north of Thetford and within easy access to Diss, Wymondham and other local historic towns. We have a rail station with services that run from Norwich to London via Cambridge and to destinations in the Midlands and North. Attleborough is also well served by regular bus links. One of our most famous residents is Peter Beales, a name that you may recognise from the Chelsea Flower Show where he regularly exhibits and is often recognised by winning awards. Peter has also planted a Rose Garden in the church grounds in the town centre. In terms of education provision, Attleborough has an Infant, Junior and High School. The High School incorporates a sixth form centre and we also have a separate school for children with special needs, not forgetting the many playgroups for children of non school age and also after school clubs. Attleborough Town Council is made up of 15 voluntary Councillor’s covering two wards and monthly Council meetings are normally held on the first Monday of the month. Our district council is Breckland which is based in Dereham. On behalf of the Town Council and all residents of the town I hope you find this guide useful and I am sure once you visit you will agree what a wonderful town we have! Councillor Karen Pettitt Mayor of Attleborough. ATTLEBOROUGH Town Guide 2011-2012

HISTORY & INFORMATION
History and Information The Town Sign and Pump
The Town sign was donated by the Chamber of Commerce and Trade to the town in 1975. The sign was carved by Mr Harry Carter of Swaffham and was erected near the entrance of Queens Square. The sign depicts the heritage of the town being agricultural and cider. At a ceremony at Queens Square on May 31st 1975 the sign was dedicated by Revd Canon I. F. Webb and unveiled by Mr P. C. N. Soloman as president of Trade and Commerce and a deed of gift of the sign was handed to Mrs R. E. D. Francis as Chairman of the Parish Council. In 2003 an aluminium Sign cast by Ivan Soanes of Norwich replaced the original Town Sign in Queens Square, the old sign was then renovated and placed on the junction of London Road and West Carr Road in the summer of 2007. The Town Pump and Acorn is a tree pump sited at Queens Square to celebrate the Diamond Anniversary of Queen Victoria in 1897. The Town Pump was revamped and dedicated by the Revd Michael Aisbett, attended by the Mayor Peter Neal and other town councillors to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 2002.

HISTORY & INFORMATION
Attleborough Carnival Attleborough Carnival has become the main event in Attleborough which is preceded with a whole week of events. Previously we got things going with a dog show and wheelbarrow race through the town centre, winners getting a barrel of beer. During the week we usually have a Talent Show featuring local new talent, and we offer cash prizes for the first, second and third. We have also had a story time at the Library, a prize bingo, a fashion show and crowning the rose queen, a showcase at Connaught Hall, a quiz evening, and a great Open Air Party On The Park on the Saturday night. Sunday has seen the main procession culminating on the recreation ground with big main arena attractions like stunt shows, and clowning around, even parachutists have landed in the main arena. Everyone has a fantastic time, there is even a funfair for the young at heart but like everything it cannot take place without your support. We need people to help either in person or just with new ideas. Anyone wishing to offer support or who just wants to know how to take part on the day can contact John Taylor on 01953 454257. The Carnival Committee look forward to seeing you in the future.

HISTORY & INFORMATION
Attleborough Christmas Carnival Attleborough has over the years, built up a reputation for presenting one of the finest displays of Christmas lights in East Anglia. To mark this, a Christmas Carnival is held on the last Sunday of November each year, to coincide with the switch on of the lights. The format for this event includes: Craft and charity stalls in the Town Hall Church Hall and Sports Centre, a Street Fair in Queens Square, Carol Singing around the tree, Fun Fair rides in the Queens Square car park, a family church service in St Mary’s Church and of course the Father Christmas procession accompanied by his helpers who arrives in town with his sleigh and presents. The businesses and stalls around the town enter the spirit by decorating their windows and stalls in the theme for the year and of course fancy dress is encouraged on the day. The enthusiasm and support of the local businesses have helped make this event a tremendous success attended by several thousand people, proving that the community spirit is alive and thriving. Anybody wishing to help or for more information, contact Karen Pettitt on 01953 455755.
Attleborough Christmas Lights Attleborough is now well known to have the best Christmas Lights show for miles around. The organisers try to improve the selection every year. A lot of hard work goes on all year round to get the spectacular results. Talks start with Marrison Electrical contractors in early June, as there is much work to be done before the lights can be put in place. Hundreds of bulbs have to be replaced and miles of cable overhauled to the very high electricity board standards. Money is always needed to help pay for this updating and replacing, so they rely on donations from local organisations and businesses. With more being raised from the general public and Town Council. Anybody who wishes to donate to this worthwhile cause should ring Geoff Ellis on 01953 453163 or Averil Howell on 01953 452437.

HISTORY & INFORMATION
Attleborough In Bloom
The Attleborough In Bloom project was started in 2005 with 20 baskets within the town centre, which was doubled to 40 baskets the following year. 2006 also saw the large floral display stand in Queens Square. Following the structural survey of the lamposts at the beginning of 2007 it was decided that we cannot attach the baskets to the posts until they have been replaced with new ones. Every Spring & Summer there is a mass of colour at Queens Square with 25 baskets around the outside whilst the inside is home to the large 3 tier display and a large selection of perennials around the trees. Baskets are also along the Church wall at St Mary’s with other ground tubs throughout the town and at each of the main entrances. Year on year we improve & extend the Attleborough In Bloom project which has been, and continues to be funded by businesses, organisations, groups, and individuals. You may wish to make a donation to the project, or you may wish to sponsor a tub or floral display for a specific reason, the birth of a child, to celebrate a wedding or wedding anniversary, a milestone or achievement in life or in memory of a loved one. If you wish to contribute to the project please contact the Town Clerk’s office on 01953 456194.

The majority of the children come from the town itself with some using school transport to travel from nearby villages. The School currently has approximately 270 children on role in 9 classes. The Headteacher Gill Howard took up her post in September 2006. The last OFSTED report (April 2010) states: “Attleborough is a good and improving school. It has some outstanding features. The headteacher, very ably supported by senior leaders, provides inspirational leadership so that the school has continued to improve. Behaviour is exemplary throughout the school. Pupils absolutely love coming to school so that attendance has risen significantly. Relationships are outstanding. Pupils are extremely polite, get on well with each other and are very accepting of and thoughtful towards those who are less fortunate or different from themselves. This leads to very effective inclusion of pupils in all groups. Pupils demonstrate excellent appreciation of how to keep safe and why they need a balanced diet and regular exercise. Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is outstanding because all aspects are given high priority through the school. Excellent spirituality, for example, can be seen in pupils’ pride in their school and the pleasure they derive from their own, and others’, achievements.” The outstanding quality of care, guidance and support offered to pupils and their families is a real strength. These aspects both contribute strongly to the delightful atmosphere which pervades the school and ensures that all groups of pupils are highly valued and treated with respect as individuals. An excellent partnership exists between the school and its parents and carers. They are delighted with what the school offers their children. The school provides an environment in which creative thinking and behaviour flourishes because it is actively promoted and celebrated by everyone at the school. We have taken ownership of the curriculum and are creative and innovative in how we teach and run the school. High standards in the basic skills of Literacy and Numeracy go hand in hand with the provision of a broad, rich and stimulating curriculum which focuses on the individual needs of the children. We believe that the promotion of children’s creativity should be at the heart of the educational process. ATTLEBOROUGH Town Guide 2011-2012

One-to-one appointments can also be made with a Norfolk Guidance Services consultant for people seeking help returning to work or wanting to make a career change. Other facilities and services at the Community and Enterprise Centre include Pavilion Crèche, a SureStart Children’s Centre and a local Breckland Council Office.

ATTLEBOROUGH Town Guide 2011-2012
RELIGION
Hargham Road Chapel
Hargham Road Chapel was started almost eighty years ago and was formerly known as “The Gospel Hall.” Two evangelists held a mission in the town, and as a result a small group of Christians met together in a small wooden hut. Later as numbers grew a corrugated iron building was erected. The present brick building was built in the 1970’s; this suffered an arson attack in 2003, but has now been completely refurbished. We are an independent church, committed to spreading the good news of Jesus Christ. We are a friendly group of Christians, who meet regularly for worship, prayer and encouraging one another. The main service is at 11am on Sundays, when we have times of worship, breaking of bread (communion) and Bible teaching. Monday evenings at 7.30pm we have our payer time and stimulating Bible study, finishing at 9.00pm. Once a month we hold a short service at Wayland Court for the residents and friends. This starts at 3.00pm (usually the last Sunday in the month) and is followed by tea and cakes. All are welcome to come. On the last Tuesday of each month we have a coffee morning from 10 to 12am, again all are welcome.

ATTLEBOROUGH Town Guide 2011-2012
RELIGION
St Mary’s Church St Mary’s Church (The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary) has stood at the heart of the market town of Attleborough since medieval times. The church still plays an important role in the life of this thriving community and is growing as the town expands. St Mary’s has an active congregation of all the ages and a wide range of activities. The Church Hall adjoining the church is used daily by many organisations including a day care centre for the elderly. Visit the church to savour the peace and beauty of this ancient place of worship and enjoy its treasures, open all year round. Sunday Services - 8.00pm, 10.00am and 6.30pm (evensong). The church has Saxon foundations and is built in Norman and Early English styles. The present building is only part of the original construction. The large square Norman Tower, now at the east end was once at the centre of a much larger building which had a fine chancel and choir extending to the east, while the North and South transepts formed the shape of a cross. The whole of this eastern end belonged to the College of the Holy Cross, founded in the late fourteenth century by Sir Robert Mortimer, who enlarged the nave for the Parish. The Tower originally had a spire and, although it is said that the old chancel was demolished after the closure of the Monasteries, it is believed by some that is was destroyed when the spire fell down some 300 years ago. A medieval record suggests that the young St Edmund – King of the East Angles – spent a year at the college studying the Psalter with the priests in Attleborough before his coronation in Suffolk in AD 856. Inside the church there are many interesting features, including the amazing Rood Screen for which St Mary’s is famous. It has been described as ‘one of the most precious possessions of our English Churches’. Dated around c1500 the 52 floor long oak screen is the only one in Norfolk to stretch across the nave and both side aisles. It has a richly carved rood loft along the front painted with the shields of the 24 English Bishoprics of the day. The screen was moved to the back of the church in the 1840s, where it remained until 1931, when it was restored to its rightful place. Other interesting features include the stained glass windows, the stone font with its comical faces, a 16th century chest with three locks and a richly carved pulpit attributed to the workshop of Grindling Gibbons. Near the aisle altar is a marble floorstone commemorating Captain John Gibbs who notoriously drove his carriage and four horses up and down the deepest part of the Devil’s Ditch on Newmarket Heath for a £500 wager in the time of Charles II. Christ Community Church Christ Community Church is a vibrant and exciting Church made up of people living in Attleborough and the surrounding towns and villages. We are part of the Newfrontiers family of churches which is made up of hundreds of churches around the world who all share the same passion to make Jesus Christ known and to build excellent churches modeled on the principles found in the New Testament. We enjoy meeting together for worship and teaching on Sundays at 10.30am at the Attleborough Junior School, Besthorpe Road, Attleborough. We also hold midweek groups which provide an opportunity for people to make friends, grow in their faith and ‘do’ life together in a smaller setting than in our main Sunday meetings. They are informal, friendly and supportive, providing an ideal setting in which to meet new people. These meet in the evening of Thursdays and Wednesdays at 7.45pm and meet in peoples homes. We regularly run Alpha courses. The Alpha course is an opportunity for anyone to explore the Christian faith in a relaxed, non-threatening manner over 10 thought-provoking weekly sessions. It’s low key, friendly and fun. And it’s supported by all the main Christian denominations. We run 2/3 courses every year and some courses meet at 7pm while others meet during the day. Attleborough Women’s Institute Mrs Anne Tinker: 01953 453601 The WI was started in Canada in 1897 by Adelaide Hoodless. She realised she urgently needed to learn household skills from more experienced women, when due to ignorance her child died of an illness caused by the use of un-sterilised dairy equipment. The society gradually spread around the world reaching the British Isles in 1915 when the first group started in Wales. Kate Gaymer formed the Attleborough Institute in 1936. Since then the local institute has gone from strength to strength with the modern Attleborough Women’s Institute members organising many activities including arts, craft, singing, keep fit and a walking group. They have annual trips to The End Of The Pier Show at Cromer, The Thursford Christmas Show and Norwich Theatre. Over recent years they have donated money towards various local projects including the Town Hall clock, benches for the Churchyard, the library, Attleborough Junior School and the Attleborough Youth Group. The Women’s Institute has raised money for the Christmas Lights, Attleborough In Bloom, Air Ambulance, First Response and the erection of the old Town sign on the corner of West Carr Road and London Road. The Women’s Institute meeting takes place at 7.30pm on the fourth Wednesday of the month at the Connaught Hall; most months they have a speakers and anyone is welcome to come along and join in or for more information telephone Mrs A Tinker on 01953 453601.

Attleborough Writers Group The Attleborough Writers’ Group is an offshoot of the Creative Writing class held for many years within the town. The members range from age 44 to 94 and some have been affiliated to the Creative Writing class for over ten years. The group meets fortnightly in the Francis Room, Connaught Hall, Attleborough to write, discuss and critique their own work. The main aims of the group are: • To support each member in their endeavour to be creative and to give each member confidence in their own abilities and aspirations. • To encourage other local people to become interested in creative writing and to start their own writing groups. • To raise the profile of creative writing as a viable interest for all sections of the community requiring no credentials or experience.
In December 2009 the writers published their first book entitled ‘Dark Horses’ an anthology of short stories and poems. The event was successfully launched by the Mayor of Attleborough, Mrs. Vera Dale, and received much local support. Recently, the group were delighted to be awarded a grant from Breckland Council towards their second anthology `Light and Dark’ which will be launched at Christmas 2010. In the summer of 2010 the writers were invited to take part in the Breckland Arts Festival and have subsequently attended many local craft fairs offering helpful advice to anyone wishing to take up creative writing. The Attleborough Writers’ Group, now an acknowledged part of the town’s society, would like to invite prospective guest speakers to come along and share their experiences. Please email Deborah Dunseith on: deborahdunseith@btconnect.com for further details.
