Diss Museum Some glimpses of Victorian life, from Norfolk Annals, courtesy of Diss Museum. On 28th September 1858: “A public testimonial, consisting of a piece of plate and a portrait of himself, painted by Mr. Boxall, of London, was presented by the inhabitants of Diss to Mr. Thomas Lombe Taylor, in recognition of his munificence in building, at his own expense, a Corn Hall for the use of the town, at the cost of £7,000. The presentation took place at the Corn Hall, where dinner was served, under the presidency of the Earl of Albemarle.” On 11th October 1859: “Charles Dickens gave a reading, at St. Andrew’s Hall, of A Christmas Carol and the trial scene from The Pickwick Papers, and on the 12th read the story of Little Dombey and of Mrs. Gamp. The reception of Mr. Dickens, on his first appearing in front of a very artistically arranged screen, was cordial and enthusiastic. His voice

was far from powerful, but he had remarkable expression and the power of exhibiting this in face as well as in voice. As a pecuniary speculation, it must have been highly profitable to Mr. Dickens.” Christmas 1860 was the coldest that had been experienced for at least a century. “At the Literary Institute at Norwich the minimum registered was 3 degrees above zero. At Costessey the register was 7 degrees below zero, or 39 degrees lower than the point at which water freezes. A peculiarity of the temperature on Christmas Day was the fact of its being colder in the morning than during the night. The coldest register was between 7am and 10am, and there was scarcely any appreciable variation till after two o’clock. Ice was about four inches thick.” In June 1861: “Herr Kolisch, the celebrated chess-player, contested, at the Rampant Horse Hotel, Norwich,
13 games simultaneously against some of the best players in the neighbourhood. He won eight games, lost three, and two were drawn.” On 2nd August 1861: “The celebrated tight-rope walker, Blondin, made his first appearance at Norwich. The rope was fixed at an altitude of about 60 feet, in a field on Newmarket Road. It is a very fortunate circumstance for M. Blondin that he crossed Niagara and had the Prince of Wales for a spectator, for it has added a much greater interest to has performances than they would otherwise have acquired, and even, if we may judge from what we saw here, they deserved.” On 14th October 1867: “A huge female elephant, weighing five tons, and belonging to Edmonds’ (late Wombwell’s) Menagerie, started from
Diss with the show, but had not gone far when she fell in Denmark Street. Poles and tackle had to be procured, and after four hours’ labour the ponderous animal was raised, put in the caravan, and taken back to the fair green, where she was placed in slings. Cordials and other restoratives were administered, but the animal died on the following day. She was valued at between £800 and £900, and had been fifteen years in the collection.” She is said to be buried on Fair Green. Basil Abbott

Norfolk Family History Society Diss Group. On 10th July the Diss branch of the NFHS welcomed Mike Wabe to talk to us on “Life and Death in a Victorian Gaol” and, as Mike explained a gaol and a prison were not the same things at all. The inmates of prisons were called convicts and had been sentenced to terms of more than three years whereas an inmate of a gaol was called a prisoner and would have received a sentence of less than three years. There were only seven prisons in the country at this time but there were over three hundred gaols. Mike, with the aid of his considerable collection of genuine artifacts, including some rather grim exhibits such as restraints, lashes, shackles and leg irons and wearing a typical gaolers uniform made up of items from various sources, unlike the standard uniforms issued to jailers in prison, took us on a journey through the system, from arrival in the solitary cell to execution. By this time gaols were a bit more hygienic than in the past and a prisoner would be given all the necessary equipment to keep
himself, his utensils and slop bucket clean, plus a bible and a prisoners uniform. Male prisoner’s hair was cut and all prisoners would receive a bath every day in which the dirt would build up so it was preferable to be early. Food was regular albeit gruel with tea and bread 7 days a week with cocoa and cheese at tea. Prisoners would receive corporal punishment by cosh or the lash or losing their mattress for 28 days for breaking the numerous rules, even the rule of silence which prevailed at all times. To instill the work ethic and keep them occupied they were made to perform pointless exercises for at least six hours a day i.e. turning a crank, walking a treadwheel, picking oakum or performing shot drill in which they had to relocate a pile of 34lb cannon balls from one end of a room to another by a routine of lifting, stepping and putting down. Women prisoners were usually put to work in the laundry, which was
at least productive and they would have their children with them if they had no-one to care for them, who were least given a basic education. It was surprising to learn that many prisoners would immediately re-offend after release despite the harsh conditions because in gaol they at least had privacy and regular food for the first time in their lives. We gasped and smiled by turns as Mike introduced us to technicalities and procedures of hanging. Particularly interesting was the story of William Marwood who became a hangman at the age of 24 after continuously pestering the Governor of Lincoln Castle to allow him to conduct an execution which went without a hitch and he was duly appointed as an executioner. After much experimenting with weights and rope, Marwood developed the long drop in which the victim’s neck was broken instantly at the end of the drop, much kinder than being slowly strangled as in the short drop. Apparently it was important that the prisoner’s weight and length of rope
were accurately assessed otherwise decapitation could result. The condemned man would be hooded with a white hood before the execution and could wear his own clothes, which would then be given to the hangman as a perk of the job as well as receiving travelling expenses on top of his wages. Multi hangings were fairly common and there were several appointed executioners who travelled from location to location as required. In Exeter in 1885 a murderer named John Lee survived three attempts to hang him as the trapdoor failed to open due to the incorrect assembly of the gallows mechanism. He became known as the ‘man they couldn’t hang’ and his sentence commuted to life imprisonment. It was a very interesting and enjoyable talk. Jenny Jenkins.

Academies As one of the leading firms in Suffolk dealing with the conversion of county schools to academies, we are often asked by teachers and parents whether Suffolk students will benefit from the change. Paul McGrath, the partner who has overseen conversion projects involving a number of the county’s secondary schools believes the answer is undoubtedly “yes”. The rationale behind the programme, and the reason why most schools look to convert, is to drive up standards by taking advantage of the freedom from centrally imposed demands as well as the increased finances which are available. Academies are also encouraged to work with other, perhaps less successful, schools to share expertise and good practices, thus benefiting a wider group of students. The first point Paul makes is that academies are largely required to deal with admissions, exclusions and special needs provision in the same way as if they had not converted so there is no prejudice to students in these areas. However, a recent survey has shown that about half of the
academies are using their new freedoms to revamp the curriculum they deliver in order to improve outcomes for their students. Interestingly, despite concerns expressed in the early stages, very few schools have changed the working conditions of staff or moved away from the pay scheme which previously existed. In Paul’s experience, the key players in driving up standards are school governors, many of whom are parents of students at schools or otherwise involved in their local community. Under the changes, they become fully responsible for identifying how well their school is performing and, where necessary, requiring the Headteacher and his team to take the steps necessary to rectify any shortcomings. He believes this is a clear example of David Cameron’s “Big Society” in practice. “If Governors are concerned about how well a school is performing, then they and the Head now have the power and tools to improve matters. Quite rightly, there is concern about schools which are not significantly underperforming
but which are only providing students with an adequate education. These children only go through schools once and are entitled to a quality education. The proposed new Ofsted inspection regime is recognising this by changing the category of “satisfactory” schools to those which will be required to be improved. Governors who have much more regular contact with, and can focus solely on, a single school are much better placed to identify shortcomings at an early stage and then take steps to resolve these to ensure there is no generation of students failed by poor education.” It is his view that Suffolk has previously offered its schools excellent support and assistance when needed. In talking to Headteachers and Governors across the county, none has expressed the view that the move to academy status has been to free their schools from Suffolk’s control. Indeed, most have nothing but praise for the county’s Education Department and will be maintaining a relationship after conversion. However, budget constraints have impacted
on what it has been able to do recently and the new academies see the financial freedoms as a way of supplementing the current services for the benefit of their students. Whilst it is still early days for the secondary schools that have converted (and with very few primary schools having yet chosen to do so), Paul believes that there is already a clear focus by Governors and staff at the new academies on the quality of education offered to students and a determination to use their new powers to ensure “their” students achieve the best possible outcomes. As a firm with staff whose own children use these schools, Jackamans is very proud to have played a part in the creation of academies and to offer them ongoing support. For further information contact Paul McGrath on 01379 643555 or by email at paul.mcgrath@jackamans.co.uk.

Diss Park In 2009 Diss Town Council under-took the first phase of a wider park regeneration project by installing new junior and toddler play equipment in the Park. Landscape Architects also drew up plans to make improvements to the Park to enhance the existing features which make it such a popular attraction and user friendly. This included new paths from the Park Road car park to meet up with existing paths which would be made wider.

The Civil Service Fellowship
Our second monthly meeting was attended by thirty two members to hear John Lee making his fifth visit to the club.
Had a lively meeting on the 19th July when Mr. Arthur Barrett gave an illustrated talk on Steam Trains.
This time his subject was “Memories of the Cinema“. His talk revolved round the forties and late sixties when we didn’t have television to entertain us.
There were films from 1895 with the lovely sounds and sights of those great old engines. The meeting in September is on the 20th when we will be holding our “Cheese and Non Wine” morning. The fellowship meet at 10.00am to 12.00pm
John, a member of the Movie Memories association and the CTA Cinema, revived the days when cinema was the major entertainment for most people. The days when you went to see a film and often had to queue around the block to get in, the manager dressed in Black evening suit would walk round and say “Two seats in the one and nines” etc. When the Cinemas had magnificent Christi and Hammond organs that would fill the cinema with popular music of the day for fifteen minutes before the film started. The days when Children had their matinees on Saturday mornings, Westerns and Tarzan with Johnny Weissmuller and weekly serials with Flash Gordon. Memories of children’s theme tunes like”Blaze Away” and Monitors who would keep discipline had yellow arm bands and patrolled the
Auditorium. Children without money would try and sneak in through the toilet window, So many memories of those Golden days of the screen were revived. Cinemas had a clean antiseptic smell and the beam of the projector would arc through the haze of the smokers. A film by St John’s Ambulance on the birth of a baby was shown; half the audience passed out, as a result the entrance became a casualty clearance station. Booing and hissing often followed when the film broke down. The up market cinemas had their own restaurants and dance halls - those were the days! Jimmy Johnson closed the meeting thanking our speaker and reviving a few nostalgic cinematic memories of his own. Non-members are very welcome to come along to this meeting as well, which takes place at Attleborough Junior School commencing at 7.30pm. At the July meeting speaker Terry Illsley gave us an insight into the “Victorian Garden”. He began by taking us further back, into the 18th century, and the era of the great landscape gardens that were created for the very rich by experts such as Capability Brown. Then as the Victorian Age dawned the rise of the moneyed middle class together with the activities of the plant hunters who were bringing back exotic plants from the Far East and the Americas saw a huge upsurge in interest in gardening – or at least impressing and outdoing your contempories! It was in this period that now
September 2012
familiar plants such as rhododendrons, azaleas, orchids, ferns, palms and even penstemons began to appear in gardens. Terry also focused on the career of Joseph Paxton who became head gardener at Chatsworth at the age of 23. A remarkable man, he constructed the world’s largest Conservatory at Chatsworth and was also responsible for the Emperor Fountain, which is still working today. He subsequently developed the concept of the urban park, the “green lung” which in particular may be found in the industrial towns of the north. Not content with that he was the architect of the Crystal Palace and also became an MP! The talk was illustrated with slides throughout and this reviewer found it to be a fascinating and thought-provoking trip into the past. The Table Show was well supported and brought plenty of success for John Frost who won with three stems of flowers, three beetroot and his plate of soft fruit. John Phoenix was successful with his five potatoes and Richard Fincham scooped the award for his vase of sweet peas.
An independent local funeral home has received national recognition for its family values. Rosedale Funeral Home has been shortlisted for a prestigious Red Ribbon Award, having impressed the judges with its innovation, community links, business success and customer service. Run by fifth generation funeral director Anne Beckett-Allen and her husband Simon, Rosedale Funeral Home has six branches across South Norfolk and North Suffolk making it one of the most successful independently owned funeral homes in the region. “It was wonderful to be nominated and we’re over the moon to have been shortlisted,” said Anne BeckettAllen, who set up Rosedale seven years ago, alongside respected local funeral directors Derrick Leeder and Richard Green, after experiencing the profit-first focus of the corporate funeral giants that dominate the industry.
“The large corporates are very active in our sector and we pride ourselves on having the flexibility and personal touch that our customers appreciate. Running a family business can be a challenge, especially when you’re on call 24/7 but I wouldn’t swap it for the world,” she added. Recommended by the Good Funeral Guide, Rosedale is also the only Norfolk name in the newly-published Natural Death Handbook’s directory of ‘flexible’ funeral directors. Rosedale branches are in Diss, Wymondham, Attleborough, Beccles, Bungay and Halesworth. Winners of the Red Ribbon Awards will be announced at a gala dinner in London in November. www.rosedalefuneralhome.co.uk www.familybusinessplace.co.uk

The Dressing Up Box After almost 6 years of trading The Dressing Up Box in Attleborough has had a major face lift ‘hopefully to shoehorn in even more fancy dress costumes and accessories’ laughed owner Sue. One of the areas for redesign has been The Sewing Box Group, Sue’s sewing classes, which have undergone a major expansion allowing a 50% increase in the number of people each session can accommodate. The Sewing Box Group currently holds 4 classes a week for total beginners to improvers wishing to hone their skills with expert help. The Sewing Box Group was started after several enquiries about learning to sew from customers amazed by the costumes Sue designs and makes for The Dressing Up Box. Under Sue’s expert guidance her current members have made clothes, bags, patchwork quilts, tepee play tents for their children. “If it can be made from fabric we have either made it or it’s on someone’s ‘to make’ list” commented Sue. Some of Sue’s members now make and sell a wide range of craft items, some of which can be purchased from The Dressing Up Box’s gift section. Sue makes costume to hire for customers who do not fit the ‘normal’ standard size of bought ones. Over the past couple of years she has seen a trend away from internet
sales because of the poor quality and fit of mass produced fancy dress “I have 4 or 5 customers every week who say they have bought online and it either doesn’t fit or hasn’t arrived” commented Sue “Unless you wish to have your costume to keep, hiring is usually a more cost effective way of having a costume”. The Dressing Up Box does stock a few costumes to purchase and can also obtain costumes from a wide range of suppliers when required. Sue commented that “our accessory section also continues to expand and while space will dictate exactly what is stocked other items can also be ordered in on request” she did laugh and say “but not instantly it usually takes a week or so to arrive so order early” The Dressing Up Box and The Sewing Box will be holding open days on Friday 31st August and Saturday 1st September, when you are welcome to come along for a look and try your hand at sewing, making your self a cushion, a door stop or a bag.

Employers - advertise your vacancy for free at the Jobs Club and reach local jobseekers.
Facebook and Twitter are great for making your presence apparent in the social media community and sites like Linkedin help you build a solely business-based profile.
Another interesting quality of Pinterest, which sets it apart from other social media is its popularity system.
However, if you’re looking to gain some popularity in a slightly different social circle with a slightly different approach, you should look into Pinterest.
The popularity of your pins isn’t based on how many ‘friends’ you have or how many people ‘like’ your page, but instead, the amount of people who find your individual posts interesting enough to ‘repin’.
Instead posting to your ‘wall’, you pin items - images and videos - to your ‘board’.
This is not dissimilar to ‘retweeting’, repinning a post from another user will pin their post to your board.
The emphasis being on ‘pinning’ as the site behaves more like a social bookmarking tool than a social networking tool.
Although it may seem something of a niche area, used properly Pinterest can be a powerful business tool for attracting attention to your company.

J C Homeworks Need your Fascias replaced? Time to replace your windows? Think it will be too expensive? Think again! Call Jason now for a free no obligation quote and be pleasantly surprised by how little it can cost to transform the exterior of your home.
Now is the ideal time to start making improvements. Working with UPVC is easiest as it is not as brittle as it would be in winter.
From inside, take a lighted candle and hold it in line with the window frame, does the flame flicker anywhere around the frame?
Maintaining the exterior of a house can improve its functionality and efficiency, as well as increase ‘curb appeal’. The appearance of your home will be vastly enhanced by replacing your guttering, fascias and soffits.
Also Birds are well and truly settled, some nests can easily fill a plastic shopping bag - so that weight on top of Felt or Soffit can be very damaging and decay and carcasses are left behind.
Look at your windows outside; is the trim rotting, cracking or missing? Is the glass broken or cracked anywhere?
When should you replace your Fascias and Guttering? If your Fascia Boards are made of timber and are not properly maintained they will rot and deteriorate. If they are not in good condition they will not be able to carry the guttering, which can be heavy after heavy rain fall. Can you ignore a bit of rot at the ends? – No the rot will almost certainly progress further. Your Fascia, Soffit and Guttering can be replaced in UPVC which now comes in several different colours and effects.
When should you replace your windows? There are a few clear signs that can help you reach a decision. Ask yourself the following questions: Do your windows have condensation or a frost build-up? If you touch the interior pane of glass is it cold in the winter or warm in the summer? When next to your window does it feel colder than the rest of the house?
Do your windows ever get stuck or won’t stay closed or open? Are you unhappy with the way your windows look? If you answered yes to any of the questions above, it is time to replace your windows. Replacement windows help reduce your heating and cooling bills and provide better UV protection - The money saved means they will have soon paid for themselves. Getting windows that look the way you want can increase the resale value of
your home as well as create a more aesthetically pleasing environment. J C Homework’s speciality is Fascias, Soffits and Guttering, however they are able to undertake all general property maintenance. Being fully insured and holding a CSCS Health and Safety Certificate enables them to do all jobs big or small, from repairing a gutter to a full house renovation. They pride themselves on their competitive prices and high level of service, take a lot of pride in their work and hope their customers can see this in the end result. J C Homeworks offer a 12 month call-back service on all fitted fascias and soffits, which includes an inspection and clean. Why Use A Conveyancing Lawyer? When you buy or sell a property, you’ll need to appoint a conveyancing lawyer. But why? And what do they do? A property buyer must ensure that he or she has a good ‘title’ to the land: that the seller is the owner, has the right to sell the property, and that there is no factor that would prevent a mortgage or resale. Conveyancing is the transfer of the legal title of property from one person to another or the granting of a mortgage. Conveyancing usually involves two major landmarks: the exchange of contracts, where equitable title passes, and completion where legal title passes. Your conveyancer (either a licensed conveyancer or a solicitor) will ensure that you have good title and
September 2012
will arrange the contracts on your behalf. Moving house can be stressful enough without wondering if you have chosen the right legal team to represent you. You need to be considerate when choosing a conveyancing solicitor or licensed conveyancer to act on your behalf, whether that be online or not. A company with many clients may be able to offer lower prices, but they might not be able to offer the personal service you require and in the time you require it. That is not to say that you cannot get a fantastic deal and great service by organising conveyancing online. You just need to be careful.

Owning Pets Is Good For You Many studies have been carried out and the general consensus is that having pets is genuinely beneficial to your overall health and wellbeing and the overall health and wellbeing of your family. It’s generally accepted that being in the calm-temperament presence of pets rubs off onto your own mood, giving a dog or cat affection is a good way to calm down,
Taylors Petfoods Questions & Answers.
but apparently there are more benefits to owning pets.
Q: What is Taylors Petfoods the no1 tip when choosing dog or cat food? A: Judge a food by its ingredients and not by its packaging or brand.
A: Yes. More often than not its costs less to feed an ultra premium food bought from a specialist pet retailer than a supermarket style brand.
Young children also benefit from having a pet at home, it helps them to develop relationships and despite the biggest argument against having pets ‘it’s too much to deal with their death’ experiencing the death of a pet helps children to deal with loss as they grow up.
Q: What are “meat and animal derivatives”? A: Generally ground up carcasses from any warm blooded animal passed as fit for human consumption. This ingredient is normally found in cheap pet foods.
Q: Are most cats and dogs fed by specialist pet retailers? A: No, surprisingly less than 30% of dogs and cats are fed by specialist pet retailers.

Q: What ultra premium foods do Taylors Petfoods recommend? A: All pets and owners are different but generally Taylors Petfoods recommend Autarky, Barking Heads, Meowing Heads, Taylors Own Premium Label, Green Dog, Acana, Natures Menu, Naturediet Skinners and Vitalin. Q: Are these foods available from the supermarket? A: These foods are only available from specialist pet retailers. Q: Can I feed an ultra premium dog or cat food for less than a supermarket style brand?
Q: My pet is a bit hyper. Can my pet’s food cause this? A: Many pet behavior specialists have linked hyper activity with colourings and additives found in some pet foods. Q: My pet’s skin is very itchy. What can cause this? A: A big cause for itchy skin is a pet’s diet. Many pets commonly develop sensitivity to wheat and beef. It takes up to 6 weeks on a beef and wheat free diet to start relieving the symptoms. Taylors Petfoods - Better for your pet and your pocket.

Thetford Grammar School Thetford Grammar School is a friendly and family based community, a high achieving co-educational day school in East Anglia, running through from a rising 4’s Pre-Prep to the Sixth Form. We are a school of just over 300 in number, where the individual is central to our purpose. The strength of this “all through” school is that it enables us to place great emphasis on a supportive environment, one in which pupils take responsibility for themselves and for each other, as reflected in the caring way seniors work with juniors. The recent Inspection report commented that our pupils “develop into caring and responsible young people with a very positive attitude to learning, working well individually and with one another.” Academic success is at the heart of our activities. Over a five-year average, 72% of grades achieved at A level are A* to B with 100% A* to E. At GCSE, 54% of grades achieved are A* or A with 100% A* - C. The report spoke of “articulate and confident pupils who develop their creativity and work independently, thinking logically and analytically”. The development of the whole person is also of great significance for us. Creativity is an important quality which we strive to encourage whether it

be through Art, Music, Drama, Sport or indeed in any classroom. There is a full programme of extra-curricular activity and we seek to blend in the traditions of hard work and extra-curricular activity with an awareness of the need to produce rounded individuals, sensitive to others and fully equipped to meet the challenges of a modern technological society. Our long history reaches right back into the Middle Ages but our modern outlook reaches well into the future. We are very aware of the world beyond the school gates and our responsibilities within it. Our Eco-Council is active in promoting green issues and our Charities Committee raises considerable funds for a variety of local, national and international causes. Currently we are involved with a university project to help build a school in Afghanistan. Our Sixth Form Centre combines medieval walls with modern glass and steel, the very best of both worlds and that is exactly how we see ourselves.
Each year we welcome students from other schools into our Sixth Form where we are able to provide excellent teaching and close individual support, thus enabling students to achieve their full potential. Our sixth-formers “show excellent levels of leadership and maturity” and are prepared carefully for the next stage of their lives. The Junior School is a particular strength as the Inspection report indicated. Progress was described as excellent in EYFS and very good in the Junior School with the strong relationship between
pupils across the school reflecting well on “the school’s aim of being an inclusive family community.” Our pupils come from all round the region, Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, a testament to our popularity. But come and see for yourselves. Bring your children for a ‘taster’ day with us, as a starting point. Let them be the best judge of whether TGS is the right environment for them. We are confident they will say yes!

4 Steps For Getting Ready For Going ‘Back-To-School’ The end of the Summer Holidays is almost here and going back to school can be something of a stressful time. Here are five steps for lessening that stress and making the back-to-school transition a little easier. 1. Get all the necessary supplies early on Being part of the rush will only make things more stressful and the availability of the materials you need will drop the longer you leave it. 2. Make plans The methods that worked last year, for homework, remembering timetables, etc, use again. Speak to other people in the same position if you’re not sure on how to go about organisation.
NURSERIES & SCHOOLS 31
Safe Hands Day Nursery Please come along to our Open Day on the 15th of September at 10am till 12pm. There will be an information session on the revised early year’s foundation stage and a visit from a famous Builder. For Further Details Please Call 01379 650420.
3. Have a place to work in It’s probably been a while since anyone’s had to sit down and write out work so make sure you’re ready for when it starts. You’ll need somewhere quiet and undisturbed with no distractions and with all the resources you’ll need. 4. Jump-start your work It’ll be easier to get back into the flow of things if you start early, have a short revision of the previous work given, you don’t need to go through all of it as you’ll likely be looking at new topics, but some prior knowledge will help without doubt.

A New Beginning For Camberwell Dental Practice Camberwell Dental Practice in 3 Church Street, Diss has recently undergone a complete renovation and relocation.

Please feel free to contact our friendly reception staff if you wish to know more about our services.
Answer.... That depends on wheather you want to look like Brad or Arnie, Jessica Ennis or Martina. For strength, three sets of three reps, the bad news is that you must work at 90% of your maximum. For muscle growth three set of twelve reps at 80% of your maximum and for lean ,muscle three sets of 15 reps at 60-70% of max.

weights. You’ll always have more energy at the start of your session so chose the one that relates to what you want to achieve. If your trying to lose weight I find that after a warm-up , start with weights and then continue with cardio after. 5. What’s the perfect rest between sets? Answer.... Again depends on Strength or power For strength: 1 to 3 mins to completely allow the muscle to replenish glycogen and oxygen levels. For Muscle growth... you need to strike a balance between completing your next set and maintining a slight oxygen deficit in your muscles, so no more that 60 seconds. For Endurance no more that 30 seconds.
3. Whats the best warm-up?
6. Whats the Optimum heart rate for fat burning?
Your trying to increase blood flow to all the major muscles... this adds elasticity to muscles and tendons. The best way to achieve this is to work for around 10mins on the X-trainer as this will use more muscle groups and is lower in impact.. Work around 50% of your maximum.
Answer.... Previous thinking was working at between 66-70% of your maximum heart rate or slow and steady was the best way to burn fat. New studies have shown that high intensity intervals are the perefect blubber buster, burning 30% more calories.

Answer.... Well firstly if you want to improve your endurance aerobic exercise first, if your after strength gains then start with
Answer.... For muscle recovery and Fat shifting, order a glass of skimmed milk or protein milk shake. Month Two
Watch Your Back!
One stone down, 4 to go!
BackCare, the Charity for Healthier Backs, state that almost 50% of adults will have back pain at sometime during the next year - that’s 30 million people.
Weight loss so far: Week 4 : +1lb Week 5: +1lb Week 6: -4lb
With the month ahead I’m setting myself a few extra targets, to concentrate a little more on exercise, do a little more walking or actually get the Wii fit board out instead of using it to stand things on, basically in general be more active!!
Week 7: -1lb Starting weight 15st 2lb Week 7 14st 1lb It’s been a tough month this time with celebratory family meals out and a 1 year olds birthday party of cake and sausage rolls!!
I would like to try and push for between 2 to 6lb this week and the following three weeks to attain a new goal of 33 BMI. Follow Gemma’s road to success in next months issue of Dispatch Magazine.
Considering the amount of food I have consumed in the past month I was pretty impressed at how little weight I did put on!!
Jonathan White from Bunwell is already one of those statistics, having being diagnosed with Degenerative Disc Disease 10 years ago. Jonathan explains. Over the 10 years I have worked with Physiotherapists and Chiropractors to help relive my pain. I have also been treated with various massage therapies, hydrotherapy, TENS and Acupuncture. I have also had my fair share of medication. Last year I was introduced to a new product called the Aquaneuro Wet System, now available in Norfolk at Zig Zag Long Stratton.
It took a little planning when out to really think about what I was going to eat, possibly not have that starter or that pudding, or put that extra sachet of mayonnaise over my chips, so I welcomed back the structure!!
This System combines leading technology called SigmaQ
with water to allow access to deep tissue, not normally accessible by standard massage techniques. This enables it to penetrate deep under the skin to increase circulation to the muscles and tissues. My first experience was amazing, I went into the system with lots of pain and hardly any movement in my spine and just 30 minutes later I didn’t feel any pain and I could bend and touch the floor! I was so impressed I became a Director of Attleborough based Aquavate and now distribute the Aquaneuro throughout the UK. Today I use the Aquaneuro on a weekly basis, which has helped reduce my medication and pain.
It has been very easy to get back into the swing of things however, especially with the ease and the pre-prepared food and with the on-going support from my consultant. The programme stresses what a vital part this plays in your weight loss journey and each week I feel I want to impress the person I’m speaking to about my achievement, allowing me to keep motivated. Once again the food has been tasty and convenient and can honestly say I look forward to meal times, the weight loss has been steady but with noticeable changes in my clothes, the general the way I feel and my attitude towards food.
JENNY CRAIG’s unique Mind-Food-Body approach - which combines delicious home delivered food with weekly one-to-one consultations – is the answer to successful weight management.

One of Britain’s most famous and respected actors Sir David Jason is getting behind the first united National Air Ambulance Week. Sir David has come a long way from his days as an electrician; since then he has won many prestigious awards for his work, with roles greatly varying from the comical Del Boy in Only Fools and Horses, to the more serious role of Jack Frost in A Touch of Frost. Sir David became interested in flying when he was young and has a keen interest in space exploration and all things aeronautical. He started out his own flying experience in gliders and then progressed to helicopters. Because of this keen interest Sir David became involved with the Association of Air Ambulances (AAA) and in March 2009 was asked, and agreed, to lend his support to the work of air ambulance charities by becoming Patron of AAA. Speaking of his involvement, Sir David said: “I am honoured to be fronting the very first united National Air Ambulance Week campaign across the UK. It is vitally important that we spread the word that air ambulance charities up and down the UK are not Government funded and rely on public donations to remain operational. Everyday lives are being saved by the highly skilled air ambulance crews. Please give whatever you can spare to support your local air ambulance.” The heart of the week long appeal will be very much encouraging the communities and businesses across the country to support their local air ambulance charity. By doing so it will make a huge difference and effectively help to save lives in the community that you live in. Every penny

really goes a long way in helping save lives. National Air Ambulance Week is an initiative put together by the Association of Air Ambulances (‘AAA’), the trade body which unites not only Air Ambulance charities from across the country, but also operators and ambulance services. The Association gives a national voice to a local service. Clive Dickin, Director of the Association of Air Ambulances (AAA) said: “We are delighted to have Sir David Jason as our Patron. It really does help us to raise awareness of our members and the essential work that they carry out locally. Our members are encouraging fundraising very much at a grass roots level. Fundraising should be fun!” The East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) is encouraging its supporters to raise money by hosting their own Come EAAA-T With Me dinner party in their own home. Helen Dodman from EAAA said: “We’d love people to have a fun evening and then donate what they think the meal was worth to the charity but whatever you decide to do, rest assured that all monies raised will stay local, helping to keep your local air ambulance flying.” If you’d like further details on holding a Come EAAA-T With Me dinner party, or would like to request a fundraising pack contact Helen on 01473 745007 or email helen.dodman@eaaa.org.uk To show your support and find out more about how you can help your local air ambulance please log onto the AAA website at www.aoaa.org.uk/naaw.

The price for a lifeline is £2.90 per week and a one off installation fee of £30.00. Each detector linked to the lifeline carries a further weekly rental. Car Fraud When considering car fraud, did you know about a third of stolen cars are never recovered and some end up being sold to an unsuspecting buyer. In addition, every year thousands of dangerous cars are patched up after an accident and resold. Bearing this in mind, anyone thinking about buying a used car should thoroughly check the vehicle’s history before handing over any money. If you buy a car and it is later found to be stolen, the police have the right to take
September 2012
it away from you. In theory, you are entitled to demand a full refund from the person who sold you the car, but this could prove difficult. You may not be able to trace the seller and, even if you do, they may not be worth taking to court. If the car’s previous owner still owes money on it, the question of whether you or the finance company owns the car is debatable. If you knew about the outstanding credit when
you bought the car, then the car still belongs to the finance company. If you did not know, then you are the rightful owner. When you are thinking about buying a second hand car, the golden rule is that you must always check the car’s history before you buy. If you do this you should avoid any unforeseen problems with ownership.

Toyota Avensis Tourer By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist Twitter @carwriteups Visit: www.carwriteups.co.uk. TOYOTA’S 2012 AVENSIS is a work of genius - especially in Tourer guise. True, not so long ago, the Avensis once looked bland and, more often than not, had a ‘minicab for hire’ sign glowing from its roof – but now the car is handsome enough for people to stop and ask what it is. I’ve had this happen a couple of times with the T Spirit Tourer 2.2 D-CAT Auto model I drove. In fact one guy asked if it was a Lexus. ’Not far off’, I said. He was utterly amazed the car was a Toyota. You see, the pronounced snout, the wrap-around headlights with integrated LED strips, combined with the car’s long, sleek body, make the Avensis Tourer one of the best looking estate cars on the market. From a purely aesthetic point of view, little touches such as privacy glass at the rear and the sort of alloy wheels you’d expect to buy as an optional extra are the icing on the cake. Inside, the car is a match for many German executive motors. Soft touch materials cover the cabin, complemented with a nickel and wood
effect centre console. A leather steering wheel, air conditioning, and automatic handbrake add another tier of quality, but Toyota’s Touch and Go integrated multimedia and navigation system is the showpiece of the interior. A standard feature of the top-of-therange T Spirit model, Toyota Touch and Go Plus, broadens the functionality and versatility of the company’s usual system to include access to email, advanced traffic data, improved mapping, and voice recognition. On the road, the 2012 Avensis is one of the best commuting machines out there. It glides over bumps and eats up motorway miles without any effort at all. The dials and switches on the dash and on the steering wheel are very clear and simple to use, and the automatic gearbox, which was fitted to my test model, is smooth and a doddle to operate. The seating position is high, but comfort is top notch, helped by an exceptionally effective electric lumbar support system. Okay, the light steering can be a little less than successful at communicating what’s going on beneath the wheels,
but it makes driving easy - especially when weaving through traffic or parking. And when it comes to loading up, the boot is massive (543 litres). It’s low, wide and long, with lots of space for anything from exhibition display boards to the family’s holiday luggage. The Avensis, which is built exclusively at Toyota’s UK factory in Burnaston, Derbyshire, is so good that it is now exported to Japan.
