Diss Museum Preparing material for the Manning commemoration, I took photos of the portraits in the old vestry of Diss church.

Above: The Revd. Edward Bosworth (left) and the Revd. William Manning (right). You can see photos of them on the box tomb near the pulpit. According to the caption, the white-haired man wearing a ‘stock’ around his neck (the left painting in the vestry) is the Revd. Edward Bosworth. The other, a slightly fey looking man in a white wig and wearing a ‘Geneva band’ collar, is the first Revd. William Manning. Bosworth was rector during Thomas

stock (like a tight neckerchief) was worn later.

After a service I just happened to mention the paintings to Canon Tony Billett, only to find that their identities are the other way round. The fey man is Bosworth, while the white-haired man is Manning. The caption on the box tomb was wrong.

I like to get things right; but it has given me a slight problem, apart from having to change the display.

I had already used them vice-versa in the museum display, so I had to check and be sure. I emailed my photos to Museums Development Officer, Jamie Everitt, who passed them on to Norwich Castle Museum.

I have been casting people as lookalikes and wanted to have enlarged pictures showing just how alike they were.

They verified that the wig and neckwear of the fey man placed him in the early to mid 18th century, while the other man’s

On the morning of Sunday 6th March there is a special church service, with the four Manning rectors depicted in drama scenes.

But I have nobody who looks like the painting that I now know is the first William Manning. No doubt we will find somebody in time. Basil Abbott.

Archive Film Evening On Friday 25th March there will be an Archive Film Evening in Thrandeston Village Hall starting at 7.30 pm. The main film is the late John Betjeman’s early 1960’s visit to Diss. Other local films of interest will also be shown. Wine and cheese will be available in the interval. The evening is being put on to help raise money for Thrandeston church. The cost of the evening will be £7.50. Please contact Michael or Janice Mortlock on 01379 7835332 for tickets.

Midwich - Acquires Specialist

Security Distributor And Embarks On Recruitment Drive Midwich, one of the region’s largest employers, has officially announced that it has acquired Ubiqz Limited, a specialist distributor of security systems based in the UK. Diss. The distributor is looking to recruit additional staff to join its thriving sales team in order to meet its ambitious growth targets for 2011.

Above: New Managing Director Stephen Fenby 2010 was a hugely successful year for the acquisitive Diss-based distributor. Midwich successfully negotiated the worst recession in the history of the IT industry to post impressive top and bottom line growth, with record sales of over £200 million. The company recently expanded its operations into Europe with the acquisition of SIDEV in France and Square One in Ireland.

Emily Orford, human resources manager at Midwich, said: “We are investing in people to further improve the level of customer service and support we provide to our customers. We have very ambitious growth aspirations and it is very important that we have the resources to meet our plan without compromising our service levels. Diss W.I. January meeting. Our first meeting of 2011 was very well attended and very busy following the holiday period. Our speaker for the evening was Irene Sayer who is an Honorary Member of the W.I. She gave a most interesting talk about her many travels and experiences since 1973 when she belonged to Amnesty International and then going on to help and educate less privileged people in such countries as Chile. Even after a serious illness in 2007 she fought back to continue with this work. Irene’s admirable talk was delivered with humour and empathy and was very much appreciated. We also had a visit from Sally of Diss Library. She came to advise us of the now serious situation at the Library. It is definitely a case of “use it or lose it” which would be a great loss for the Diss community and especially those people who rely on it.

agreed to share this sum between the Air Ambulance and First Responders. Many thanks to all the members that have so enthusiastically supported this project. Finally, perhaps some of our members and prospective new members heard Jean Sudron, our President, and Sue Morgan being interviewed about the W.I. on Park Radio just before Christmas. Hopefully we presented a picture of the many benefits there are and what fun we have which will encourage new members for 2011. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month at Diss Methodist Church Hall and start at 7.30pm. New members and visitors are very welcome to join us.

Pat Sims reported that the final figure reached by fundraising last year is over £800. It was unanimously

The Lofty Larch By Joan Garnham, Waveney Tree Specialists. altitudes up to 2,500m in the northern hemisphere. They resist the cold as they are rich in resin preventing the living tissue freezing. The resin remains liquid if heated and therefore is fire resistant.

The larch (Larix) is a small genus of less than a dozen species of deciduous conifers. They are fast growing and one of the most seasonally attractive – their needles turn gold in the autumn. The first records we have of the larch is from Julius Caesar (80BC) when he laid siege to an alpine fort built of larch; he discovered that burning brush wood against the walls had no effect; the Romans used it extensively in boat building as it is also water resistant. Larches are hardy and found at

Dispatch February 2011

There are several pockets of The Great Wood of Caledon still left in Scotland and contain magnificent examples of the European Larch (Larix decidua). In 1885 the Duke of Dunkeld planted 11 Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi). The resultant cross seedlings proved to be more vigorous and of higher commercial value – the Dunkeld Larch. The wood is hard, heavy, knot free, and decay resistant. Turpentine is distilled from the resin. The Dukes of Athol were known as the planting dukes and covered many square miles of the Scottish hillsides with over 14 million larch. Primarily they were looking to make their fortunes selling the wood to boat builders, unfortunately about this time saw the birth of the iron ships. The main uses now are for yacht building, fence posts and garden furniture. The Forestry Commission use them as nurse trees surrounding plantations. The caber,

tossed in highland games, is usually made from larch and is approximately 19ft 6in long and weighs 175lbs. In natural medicine, a decoction of the bark has been used to treat urinary tract infections, bronchitis and coughs. It forms part of the Bach Flower remedies to achieve balance and harmony. The larch typically grows to 40m and is particularly long lived; the oldest is in Val Malenco, Italy at 980yrs. The most northern forest is Dahurian Larch (L.gmelinii) which is thriving 200km beyond the timber line in Russia. The oldest forest was planted in 1738 in Lintula. Scandinavia and was made a world heritage site in 1991. The main diseases particular to the larch are wholly aphids which cause die back but not usually fatal. A form of fungus (phytophthora ramorum) has invaded Britain since 2002 and affects the Japanese Larch. It kills most trees it infects and must be reported. So far it has spread from the West Country to Wales.

The Japanese Larch or money pine was used in bonsai, some of these miniature trees are now priceless, hence the name. The specially dwarfed trees symbolise mortality and the changes wrought by the seasons. In alpine legend the Saeligen or ‘Blessed Ones’ live in larch and protect people and animals. In Siberian tradition, the soul of the Shaman is reared in the larch and larch groves are considered sacred. Personally I think of them as one of the signs of spring when the purple female flowers (or roses) appear before the lime green needles. The Magic Flute The story of a magic opera. For the Christmas lecture, Diss Decorative and Fine Arts Society [DDFAS], enjoyed a real treat from Peter Medhurst, the renowned scholar, musician and singer, on the story of The Magic Flute. This last opera by Mozart from 1791 is a “pantomime” that is both simple and complex, a true assembly of Mozart’s ability and genius. Peter Medhurst’s relating of the story of the opera, its style, its innovation and its success was punctuated with wonderful illustrations by Peter himself. His fine playing and the range of his singing was a joy. The opera owed some of its success to having been written in German and not being too highbrow – very acceptable to a wide audience. Although Mozart never wrote “Christmas” music, this work has all the elements of a holiday season spectacular. It is set in Egypt and is the story of Tamino and his journey from darkness to enlightenment. It has the tests of true love for the hero and his lover, Pamina, the comic support

characters, magic and the contest of good and evil. There are also clear references to Freemasonry and Mozart, an ardent Mason, used these symbols to subtly illustrate his support and concern over the Emperor’s pressure to close Lodges in Austria. The faultless presentation set an excellent pre-Christmas mood for the 120 DDFAS members who had braved the cold and the snow and they were rewarded with the traditional mince pies and wine after this fine lecture. The next DDFAS meeting in Roydon village hall is on Tuesday, 15th February and will be by Alan Bott on The Baltic States: Art & Culture from the Medieval Hanseatic League to Tsarist St Petersburg – Great preparation for the DDFAS tour to that area in September 2011. Anyone interested in joining Diss DFAS should contact the Membership Secretary, Judith Buckfield on 01379 852123.

Pre-Nup Proposals Unveiled The Law Commission published a consultation on the future of pre-nuptial agreements this week, seeking views on whether couples should be able to make binding agreements governing financial arrangements if their relationships end. The paper puts forward a range of options for reforming the law of pre-nuptial, postnuptial and separation agreements. It seeks views on whether couples should be able to enter into a binding agreement not to seek ancillary relief in the event of divorce of dissolution, and whether such agreements should be able to encompass all of a couple’s property, or contain only terms relating to pre-acquired, gifted or inherited property. The commission ‘provisionally proposes’ that for such agreements to be enforceable, they should be in writing, with each party required to have taken legal advice, and the party seeking to enforce the agreements must have made full and frank disclosure of their financial situation. It does not propose setting any time limits that would automatically invalidate any agreements, and explores the possibility

that an agreement would cease to have effect after a certain period of time, or on the occurrence of a certain specified event, such as the birth of a child. The paper proposes that an agreement should not be enforceable if it fails to provide for the needs of any children of the family, or leaves one party reliant on state benefits. At present, the law does not allow couples to prevent each other asking the courts to decide how their property should be shared, and it is down to the courts to decide on a case-by-case basis how much weight to give to an agreement made between them. The consultation closes on 11th April. For further information on this or any other family matter please contact our expert Amanda Maruca on Norwich 01603 610481 or Diss 01379 641221.

Comercrawley Your questions answered… Question: I was severely assaulted at work recently by a work colleague. I feel that I didn’t do anything to provoke the assault and the police have told me that they are looking to bring charges against the individual concerned. Please advise me as to whether I may be able to pursue a claim for compensation. Answer: You have several options in terms of seeking to claim compensation for the injuries and associated financial losses and expenses that you have suffered as a result of the assault. You may be able to puruse a civil claim for damages against your employer. This is on the basis that an employer will be vicariously liable for the wrongful acts of their employees that occur during the course of their employment. The courts have held that this may include an assault by an employee. The claim will be dealt with by the company’s employers liability insurers. You could also pursue a civil claim for damages against the work colleague that assaulted you. This is however a less attractive option as the claim will not be covered by an insurance policy. Another option is to seek compensation from

the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority. The CICA basically administers a centrally funded scheme to compensate the victims of crime. To succeed with a claim you will need to meet the criteria specified under the scheme. The amount of any compensation awarded is however likely to be less than you would be able to claim via a civil claim for damages plus the CICA will not pay anything in respect of legal fees. Finally, if a criminal prosecution is pursued against the person that assaulted you, you can seek for a compensation order to be made as part of the sentencing (assuming of course that a conviction results from the prosecution). The amount of any compensation is likely however to be very low compared to the other options mentioned above plus the compensation order will be payable by the person that assaulted you and will therefore depend on his or her means to pay. If you have a question for our legal advice team you can submit it by email: enquiries@comercrawley.co.uk or in writing to: Chancery House, Victoria Road, Diss, Norfolk IP22 4HZ.

Diss Community Farm - First Public Meeting When: Sunday 13th February, 3:00pm. Where: Roydon Village Hall. members may also help on designated work days, children are welcome to join in too.

Community owned and run farms are becoming popular these days. There are active projects running in Norwich and Ipswich and all over the UK. Now one is starting in Diss. The first public meeting will be on Sunday 13th February at 7:30 pm in Roydon Village Hall. We met with Adrian Bloom, of Bloom’s of Bressingham, who has suggested an 8 acre field of his between Roydon and Bressingham to rent, subject to approval by his Board. We also have the possibility of using a 3/4 acre garden in Roydon. This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in your own food supply, have access to great local organic veg, have fun and make new friends at regular social events and farm work days. This event is a chance to learn more about the proposed project of Diss Community Farm and to have your say about how you might like to see it develop. In a conventional farm, the farmer takes all the risk, and has to hope he will find a market for the produce. With a community farm, there is a professional grower, who is paid to do most of the work, but the ownermembers share the risk, and in return get to choose what is grown. Members commit to buy a weekly share of the produce, with different sizes of shares available for smaller or larger households. If they want

With a community farm, it is quality, not profit that counts. The farming will be to the highest standards, with no artificial fertilisers or pesticides. You know the food will be extremely fresh and local. It is under your control: you know who produces it, and you can even help with producing it. The plan is to distribute the food weekly at two or more locations around Diss, and to make the pick-up times social events too. You could simply collect your food, or stay around for tea and cakes and socialise with your friends. We intend Diss Community Farm to be the cornerstone of a local, sustainable food system; that we are calling the Diss Food Community. We will seek out additional local suppliers of bread, milk, cheeses, meat, honey, wholefoods, prepared foods and more. We invite anyone to come to learn about our plans. Do you want to reconnect with your food and the land it is grown on? Do you want to be our grower? Help on the farm? Offer other garden produce, eggs, cooked food, etc? Come along to our first meeting and help us to shape the project. All are welcome regardless of your level of experience in farming or gardening. See our new website at dissfoodcommunity.wordpress.com to keep up to date with developments, or contact Angela Lamb at disscommunityfarm@yahoo.co.uk, phone 01379 641878, to be kept informed.

Loaning Your Horse?

Diss U3A

During these financially difficult times, many horse owners may be wondering how they can continue to afford to keep their horses and could even be considering advertising the animal for loan.

The guest speaker for the New Year was Paddy Heazell who gave a fascinating talk on the history of Orford Ness.

Above: Chris Moffat of Jackaman Smith & Mulley Whilst loaning a horse can be rewarding for all concerned, there are risks, and caution needs to be exercised when considering such an arrangement. It is of the utmost importance, for the security of all concerned (not least the horse), that a properly drafted, written loan agreement be entered into prior to the horse leaving the owner’s control; in addition, the would-be borrower’s credentials should be checked out carefully, references obtained and the place where the horse will be kept, visited. Loan agreements can be adapted to suit the requirements of a particular

owner, but basically should contain a full description of the horse, the period of loan, address of where the horse is to be kept, any specific conditions regarding care (i.e. must be stabled at night or any special dietary requirements), the right of the owner to access the horse at any reasonable time, details of who will be responsible for insuring the horse and any associated equipment such as rugs and saddlery. Full details of the insurers and policy number, details of the veterinary practice which the horse would be registered with, who would be responsible for veterinary treatment and routine vaccinations, details of the Farrier and whether there are any special shoeing requirements, any restrictions upon the use of the horse, full descriptions and details of any equipment and saddlery that may accompany the horse. These are just some examples of clause types that can be included within a loan agreement. If you are considering putting your horse out on loan, it is advisable

The people working at Orford Ness in those times all played a pioneering role in the history of modern warfare and defence. Although some evidence of the secret past of Orford Ness still remains the ever encroaching sea will in time ensure that this historical site is lost forever. Prior to the meeting, David Emerton, chairman of Diss U3A, voiced his concern that nobody has yet expressed an interest in taking on the role of Branch Secretary when it becomes vacant in March and unless the position is filled it could have serious consequences for the continuation of the Branch. Attleborough Christmas Lights

Monthly Update.

Once again we would like to thank everyone who contributed to the lights this season.

Councillor Resigns Glennis Firman, a member of the Town Council, recently resigned from office with immediate effect and this leaves some 3 vacancies on the Town Council’s 15 seats. The next scheduled district and parish elections will be held on 5th May 2011. Any person who is interested in standing for the Town Council and wishes to find out more about the modern role of local councillors should contact Breckland Council (01362 656 870) and ask about the Prospective Councillor campaign. Attleborough Community Awards 2011 The Town’s Annual Community Awards will be held soon and nominations are

now being sought. We are looking to recognise people who put themselves out for the good of the community, those unsung heroes who go the extra mile to serve others without expecting any reward. The Awards will be made by the Mayor at the Annual Town Assembly at the Town Hall on the evening of 7th March. If you wish to nominate someone for an award please complete a nomination form – to be found at various places in Attleborough including the Town Hall and the library – and return it to the Town Clerk at the Town Hall by 14th February.

In particular the Traders in the Town for their generosity in these hard times, we are so proud of how our Town looks at Christmas and without the input of the Traders this would be greatly reduced. Many thanks also to all the people who attended the Carnival and helped fill the buckets and to Mr Allen from Wymondham who gave the Christmas tree in memory of his younger days spent in Attleborough. Also thanks to the boys from Marrison Electrical for keeping the lights glowing. Grateful thanks, A. Howell and G. Ellis.

The Hunt For Breckland’s New Year Greenest Family Is On! Bathroom Makeover Whether you cycle to work or school, grow your own vegetables, use energy saving light bulbs or do your best to repair rather than replace, officers from Breckland Council want to hear from you!

Well another New Year has crept up on us and that all important home project you have been contemplating about for sometime has yet to be sorted.

The Council has announced a new competition to find Breckland’s Greenest Family who will help promote a more environmentally friendly lifestyle and encourage other residents to make simple changes that will make a big difference.

Whether it’s that tired looking en-suite in need of a change or a complete newly designed and installed bathroom revamp that you have longed for over the years, Supreme Bathrooms at Wymondham is the place to visit.

In return, the chosen family will receive £100 eco vouchers, a veg box scheme up to the value of £250 and a free one year leisure pass to a Breckland Council leisure centre. Lady Kay Fisher, Breckland Council Executive Member for Environmental Wellbeing and Communications said: “I know that there are lots of residents out there who are doing their bit to help the environment. This is an opportunity for one green family to lead by example and use their experience to inspire others - and win some fantastic prizes too!”

To be considered, families should complete a questionnaire to demonstrate that they are doing their bit to help the environment. To help Breckland promote the green message, the winners must agree to feature in Breckland Voice and other media, passing on tips to other residents about steps they are taking to reduce their carbon footprint. For further information about the Councils search for Breckland’s Greenest Family, and how to apply, look on the Breckland Councils website www.breckland.gov.uk, or contact the council on 01362 656878. Questionnaires should be returned by 4th March and the winning family will be notified the week ending 18th March.

Any of these symptoms in my advert could indicate that your central heating system had problems from internal corrosion, rust, sludge & scale. A power flush can restore circulation and efficiency to your central heating system by removing these products. The process involves connecting a power flushing pump to the existing central heating pump valves, or across the tails of a radiator. Specialist chemicals are then pumped around the heating system to loosen and mobilise

the unwanted debris. Each radiator is then individually flushed clean, an inhibitor is added to prevent further corrosion. The process is done with minimal disruption. For more information on for a free no obligation quote, ring Paul on (01508) 532671 or 07879 414197.

‘Am...’ A message for the New Year from Malcolm Ryan, Pastor of Attleborough Baptist Church. In the gospel of John, we find that Jesus said, ‘I am…’ a number of times. He said, ‘I am the light of the world’ (John 8:12). What the sun is to the earth, Jesus Christ is to the human heart. This is why he added, ‘Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life’ (John 8:12).

Jesus said, ‘I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing’ (John 15:5). The life of the branch comes from the vine. The Holy Spirit is the life within, and he is always there to be your Helper and your Comforter, and to produce good fruit in your life. Jesus said, ‘I am the good shepherd’ (John 10:11). We are the sheep; he is the Shepherd. The shepherd cares for his sheep. He gives them food and protection. Isn’t it wonderful to know that when you ask Jesus to be your Lord and Saviour, he is always there? In the midst of troubles and difficulties he will be there. He will always be there. To be sure, in Christ you will have a Friend who will stick closer to you than a brother (Proverbs 18:24). If you want to understand more about the living God who made you and will always love you, please come along to Attleborough Baptist Church any Sunday at 10.30am. You will find a caring fellowship and the faithful preaching of God’s Word to help you become the person he wants you to be.

Young Archer Hits Target In National Competition A talented young archer from Little Ellingham, has won the 2010 National Under 12s Indoor Archery Tournament. Joe Ground was presented with his winner’s cup and medal by Commonwealth archery gold medallist Nicky Hunt after clinching the title at the recent competition in Telford. He achieved the accolade just days before his 12th birthday. Earlier this year, a £450 grant from Breckland Council’s Gifted and Talented Fund enabled Joe to benefit from oneto-one professional coaching from Mark Wheeler, Tom Barber and Andy Beer to help improve his technique. Lynda Turner, Breckland Council Executive Support Member for Communities and Benefits, whose son is also an archer, said: “In archery, developing good habits and technique at an early stage is key to future success, and Joe had reached a point where he would really benefit from professional help. The Gifted and Talented Fund is there to nurture and support the development of promising youngsters and

the £450 grant enabled Joe to access the expert guidance he needed”. Joe’s mother Elizabeth Ground said: “Joe has gained enormously from the help Breckland has provided over the past year. The improvement in his technique was reflected in his scores at the Tournament which were significantly higher than other boys in his age group”. Joe has notched up a number of triumphs this year including breaking three county records for his age group and gaining second place in the National Archery Society Young Archer of the Year Award. His next goal is to join other talented youngsters in the Great Britain archery squad. Long Stratton Youth Café

Edward Williams Celebrates 107 Years

Long Stratton & District Funeral Service have supported the Long Stratton Youth Café grand opening on January 25th, 2011 at the Methodist Church in Manor Road....

His first memory is of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra opening the Docks near his home in Cardiff, and over a century later Edward Williams has celebrated his 107th birthday with friends and family.

...By not only printing the posters and leaflets, but also will be offering bereavement support to any teens that attend the youth café that have suffered a bereavement. The special opening night featured Lee Gibling – Human Beatbox and vocal

percussionist and everyone enjoyed free cakes and smoothies. The Youth Café is open every Tuesday (in term time) from 7pm until 9pm for youngsters from 11 years to 17 years and after the opening night a small charge of £2 per person will be levied to cover costs.

He said: “If I sat around all day then they might as well put me down like an old horse, so I need to keep on my feet”.

The youth café relies entirely on volunteers, but has received some funding from Long Stratton Parish Council and Co-Operative Community Fund.

She said: “Edward is a very charming gentleman and it is very humbling to be in the presence of a man who has witnessed so much and still has so much to offer.”

For more information please contact Allison Brown: mobile 07947 684607 email: allison.brown66@sky.com or Aneliese Rix at Long Stratton & District Funeral Service on 01508 531 806.

Chairman of Breckland Council, Linda Monument, witnessed first hand just how spritely Edward is as he welcomed her to his open house party.

Above: Edward Williams Celebrates 107 years. Born on December 15th, 1903, in Cardiff, South Wales, Mr Williams now lives with his daughter in Great Ellingham and is proud to be Breckland’s oldest known resident. The only surviving sibling of 13 children, Edward was married to Catherine for 54 years before her passing in 1983. He has four children, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren and hopes that he will soon have a great, great grandchild. Mr Williams undertook many jobs over the years as a skilled cabinet maker, joiner and wheelwright and believes it is his work ethic that is the key to his longevity. In fact, Mr Williams was still working well into his 100’s making three wooden cradles which he shipped off to Japan and New Zealand for some of his great grandchildren.

16 Dispatch February 2011

Lynda Turner, Breckland Council Executive Support Member for Communities and Benefits, who also attended the party said: “It was a privilege to be invited and Edward was very modest and didn’t see what the fuss was about. It was truly wonderful to hear some of his stories of which I am sure he has many more.” Mr Williams’ birthday treat from his daughter Christina Mason and her husband Robin was a trip to the Theatre Royal to see Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’. Mrs Mason said: “Dad enjoyed the play very much. He still likes to get out and about and enjoys taking walks around the village”. Even at the ripe age of 107 Mr Williams showed that he still has a sense of humour; when showing off one of the many greetings cards received from the Queen, Mr Williams joked: “I think she likes me, she keeps writing to me every year.”

Residents With Long-Term Health Conditions To Benefit From Free Online Courses Launching In Norfolk Expert Patients Programme Community Interest Company (EPP CIC) commissioned by NHS Norfolk are delivering free online courses for people who live with a long-term health condition or chronic illness to help them manage their condition more effectively. said: “Living with a long-term health condition can cause depression, pain and low confidence – it can also affect relationships with friends and family – but this needn’t be the case. “The EPP online course is designed to improve quality of life, reduce feelings of isolation and depression, improve eating habits, improve relationships, reduce visits to health care professionals and help people learn to self-manage their illness.” With the cold weather set to remain, residents across Norfolk with long-term conditions – many of which can be exacerbated in cold weather - are being urged to resist the temptation to forget about their health over the festive period and act now to ensure they start their new year off on the right track. Derek Clarke, Norfolk Contract Manager at the Expert Patients Programme,

The free, internet-based course, which is running for the first time in Norfolk, runs with up to 20 people at a time, who log on 2-3 times a week for a total of two hours. The course runs for six weeks with an extra two weeks of time at the end to allow people time to revisit or update their sessions or use the many tools the course gives them access to. People accessing the course don’t need

to be online at the same time; they can log on at anytime, anywhere, during the course. Each week, they enter the online learning centre, which covers topics which will help them make plans and look at ways to solve problems they may have in relation to their long-term condition. Two trained online course tutors can offer support and advice and respond to posts that appear each week in the discussion area. Michaela Trett, Contract Manager - Third Sector at NHS Norfolk, said: “Supporting residents with long-term conditions and enabling people to take greater control of their own health is a priority for us, which is why we are so keen that local residents take up this opportunity. “At NHS Norfolk we’re offering the online course in order to give as many people as possible the opportunity to take part

in the Expert Patients Programme. With it being accessible online, not only is it flexible for those people who are out at work during the day to take part at a time convenient to them, it is also particularly useful for those people who are less mobile or have severe pain as they can take part in the comfort of their own home and still benefit from the tools and techniques that are on offer.” People living with long-term health conditions who feel they would benefit from taking part in online courses should call Freephone 0800 783 8944, email info@eppcic.co.uk or visit www.expertpatients.co.uk. Bookings are now being taken for courses starting in February 2011 and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Although we had quite a successful summer last year, nobody would pretend that trading conditions are easy in the current economic climate, especially for those of us in the leisure and tourism sectors. My lease on the buildings here is due for renewal very shortly and I’m not getting any younger, so this seemed like the right time to take a step back.” Mr Turner continued: “I would like to thank

“People said I was mad when I took on these buildings. They were almost derelict and threatened with demolition. But I replied that I have always loved trains, so I gradually set about bringing the station back to life using proceeds from my piano business” Mr Turner explained. “I managed to get permission to remove seating and other items from old railway carriages to help create ‘Brief Encounter’. Now, 23 years on, and with us having won a string of both local and national awards, I feel proud of the role that I have played inmaking Wymondham Station such an important gateway to the town and surrounding area.”

“I’m pleased to say that a catering business will be retained here at Wymondham Station under the new ownership, and that although I’m supposedly retiring, I will be continuing with my piano tuning activities. I’m also intending to devote much more time to my garden and to my support for Wymondham Abbey and my home village of Ashwellthorpe” said Mr Turner.

The Brief Encounter Restaurant currently remains open daily, with the new owners, who are developing exciting plans for the future, expected to take over in mid-February. Also based at Wymondham Station, Station Taxis and the Nailway Beauty Salon are both continuing to trade normally alongside the part-time railway ticket sales point, operated by National Express East Anglia.

Ensuring Rover’s Return Breckland Council has announced that free micro-chipping vouchers are on offer for the first 100 residents to apply who are in receipt of benefits. It is hoped that this new initiative will help reunite lost dogs with their owners and help tackle a problem which incurs a substantial cost to council tax payers. Acting on complaints from the public, Breckland Council’s dog warden service seizes and kennels around 100 stray and lost dogs every year. Sadly, in only half of these cases is the Council able to reunite dogs with their owners; the remainder are re-homed and some may have to be put down if a suitable place cannot be found. Paul Claussen Breckland Council Executive Member for Planning, Health and Housing explained how the scheme will help tackle this problem: “Breckland is promoting responsible dog ownership and we hope this initiative will encourage more people to get their dogs micro chipped. From 19th-27th February and 3rd-6th March, Thetford Forest Park in Suffolk will turn ‘electric’ when swathes of colour, sound and technology will light up the woodland and bring it alive after dark. This exciting new winter event - created by specialist visual arts team Culture Creative in partnership with The Forestry Commission – was postponed from December when the severe weather in the North East of country caused havoc at another event and forced the team to cancel the show in Thetford. The Culture Creative team is now looking

forward to bringing this magical event to Thetford at last. “We’re very happy to now be in a position to bring the Electric Forest to Thetford before the clocks go forward. We’ll be using the best in technology, to turn the natural environment into something magical and theatrical,” said Zoe Bottrell, director of Culture Creative. Aimed at people of all ages, visitors are also promised the unexpected on the 1.5km self guided interactive walk - like a ‘phone’ that lets you talk to the trees. Alongside the trail visitors will also be able to pick up a bite to eat and children can enjoy some of the play equipment throughout the forest that will be illuminated especially for the event. “We’ve certainly pulled out all the stops to make sure this event has the wow factor and hope as winter draws to a close, people will grab this opportunity to see the beauty of the trees in a whole new light and experience the magic of the forest after dark,” added Zoe Bottrell. The Electric Forest will run across the schools half-term holiday from 19th to 27th February and 3rd to 6th March 2011, 6.00 – 9.00pm. It provides support and guidance to rural communities and offers a place for people to meet as well as access to information. In these difficult times, it is vitally important that people know where to access help if they need it, be it financial (e.g. benefits, help with debts), physical (e.g. mobility aids, health information) or even emotional

Spring Weddings

Tips For Planning A perfect wedding. The Date Find a date that works for everyone. Be mindful of the guests that are coming, where they are coming from, time of year, time of day, and day of the week. It is important that everyone is comfortable. Choosing a Location Find a location for your reception and ceremony that works for you and you fall in love with. Once you book those locations everything else will fall into place. Keep the guest list in mind. You want to make sure the room won’t be too big or too small for your guest list.Go to a place that has a great reputation. Ask around. Find out what people are doing. Find out the pros and cons of every place.

Keep It In Perspective Have fun. Laugh at yourself. Be humble. Enjoy this once in a lifetime process. Keep a journal of all the characters you will meet. You will meet a lot of characters. On your one-year anniversary open that journal and have a good time with it. Personalise your wedding. It’s all about you. Remember don’t let anyone influence you on what you want to do. Your wedding is only five hours. Your memories are a lifetime. Make it yours. Most importantly, don’t forget to keep things real. The wedding day is the first day of your marriage but it is only one day of your marriage. You might want to set the tone for your entire marriage on your wedding day. Keep things real, be who you are, enjoy yourself and don’t stress. This is just the beginning.

Recruitment Tips For Hiring

Quality People

Hiring the right employee is a challenging process.

We are based on Edenside Drive, in Attleborough Town Centre, only a minutes walk from the free Edenside public car park.

Hiring the right employee is a challenging process. Hiring the wrong employee is expensive, costly to your work environment, and time consuming. Define the Job Before Hiring Hiring the right employee starts with a job analysis. The job analysis enables you to collect information about the duties, responsibilities, necessary skills, outcomes, and work environment of a particular job. Plan Your Recruiting Strategy With the job description in hand, set up a recruiting planning meeting that involves the key employees who are hiring the new employee. The hiring manager is crucial to the planning. At this meeting, your recruiting strategy is planned and the execution begins.

Use a Checklist for Hiring A checklist for hiring an employee will help you systematise your process for hiring an employee. The checklist for hiring an employee keeps your recruiting efforts on track and communicates progress to interested employees and the hiring manager. Ask the Right Questions The job interview is a powerful factor in hiring an employee. The job interview is a key tool employers utilise in hiring. The job interview questions asked are critical in magnifying the power of the job interview to help you in hiring the right person. Interview questions that help you separate desirable candidates from average candidates are fundamental when hiring.

Health, beauty & wellbeing Do You Have Sore Or Gritty Eyes? Symptoms of sore, gritty & watery eyes are all too common a complaint all year round, but particularly in Autumn & Winter. from evaporating. Whilst the bulk of the tears are produced in the tear glands on the side of our eyes, the oils are produced by the meibomium glands, which are little pits located on our eyelid margins, near the base of the lashes. These pits frequently block as the oils solidify, causing a plug in the gland and preventing the oils from flowing out into the tears. Above: Ed Adkins of Adkins Opticians These are usually indicative of a condition known as ‘Dry’Eye’. This is actually a bit of a misnomer, because often the problem isn’t a lack of tears, as the name would suggest, but a malfunction of a component of the tears. Essentially, tears have three main components: water, mucus and oil. The oil layer lubricates and prevents the tears

Artificial tear products, which are widely available, can provide short term relief

to the symptoms of dry-eye. Sometimes, a better solution is to take a holistic approach and treat the cause. Gently scrubbing the lid margins with a lid-wipe such as Supranettes to remove any debris and applying direct heat to the eyelids using the revolutionary MGDRx Eyebag can help unblock the meibomium glands, allowing normal tear function to resume.

Iron Iron deficiency, anaemia causes weakness, tiredness and breathlessness. Your doctor can diagnose anaemia with a blood test, and may advise iron supplements. Keep your levels topped up with plenty of iron rich foods like lean red meats, offal, poultry, eggs, pulses and dried fruits. Caffeine Don’t rely on caffeinated foods and drinks to keep you alert. It’s false energy that quickly passes. Water Dehydration slows you down, so drink around 8 large glasses of fresh water per day.

Balance Your Blood Sugars The best body fuels are low-glycaemic index carbohydrates like wholemeal bread, brown rice, brown pasta and pulses (beans lentils). They provide slow sustained increase in blood sugar and therefore releases energy slowly rather than the quick short lived buzz from a sugary snack. Exercise Regularly Being unfit makes you more prone to tiredness, and also less likely to exercise. It’s a vicious circle, so try to break out of it! Why 5 A Day? Fruit and vegetables are part of a balanced diet and can help us stay healthy. That’s why it so important that we get enough of them. 5 A DAY highlights the health benefits of getting five 80g portions of fruit and vegetables every day. That’s five portions of fruit and veg altogether, not five portions of each. Five Reasons To Get Five Portions • Fruit and vegetables taste delicious and there’s so much variety to choose from. • They’re a good source of vitamins and minerals, including folate, vitamin C and potassium. • They’re an excellent source of dietary fibre, which helps maintain a healthy gut and prevent constipation and other digestion problems. A diet high in fibre can also reduce your risk of bowel cancer. • They can help reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and some cancers. • Fruit and vegetables contribute to a healthy and balanced diet. Fruit and vegetables are also usually low in fat and calories (provided you don’t fry them or roast them in lots of oil). That’s why eating them can help you maintain

a healthy weight and keep your heart healthy. 5 A DAY is based on advice from the World Health Organization, which recommends eating a minimum of 400g of fruit and vegetables a day to lower the risk of serious health problems, such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and obesity. To get the most benefit out of your 5 A DAY, your five portions should include a variety of fruit and vegetables. This is because different fruits and vegetables contain different combinations of fibre, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. Almost all fruit and vegetables count towards your 5 A DAY. Potatoes and cassava don’t count because they mainly contribute starch to the diet.

Changes To Car Insurance Legislation Compulsory motor insurance was introduced in 1930 when it was agreed that it was necessary to make sure that anyone injured in a road collision was not left uncompensated. New Car Insurance Legislation Today, there are in the excess of 31 million registered vehicles on the UK’s roads and an estimated 4 million vehicles that are unregistered or are off road for one reason or another. The Motor Insurance Bureau and the Association of British Insurers have estimated that about 6%, that is

approaching two million registered vehicles are uninsured. Every motorist who buys car insurance pays an average of £30 each year within their premiums to cover crashes involving uninsured and untraced drivers. It is also estimated that uninsured and

VW Group Specialist Combines With Italian Car Specialist Chequered Flag has been established since 1976 and is based in Attleborough, South Norfolk. We are a family run business with a strong local connection in the area. The managing director Felix Desira and the sales and service team are always on hand to deal with any enquiries in a professional but friendly manner. You can browse our approved used, request a test drive and even make a service or MOT booking. The Chequered Flag have been associated with Skoda for 28 years and have expanded to become a VW group specialist, we buy, sell, service, MOT and repair any vehicle from Skoda, Seat, VW and Audi. At Chequered Flag we believe that buying or selling a car should be a pleasure and hassle free. Even if it’s a cheap car or one that costs plenty, we’ll use our vehicle history checks to reduce the risk of nasty surprises before you even view the vehicle. The service and parts department has fully trained and qualified staffs who are VW group accredited so you know that the standard of work is of the highest quality. The Chequered Flag are looking

at expanding the workshops and putting in two class 7 ramps one of which will be an MOT ramp. Last month they combined their efforts with Felix’s Brother, Joe Desira and launched the South Norfolk’s Italian Car Specialist. Joe has been a car enthusiast since the age of 3, when he was allowed to hold the leadlight for his brother’s garage underneath the arches in London. Joe’s background has always been in Italian Cars, namely Fiats & Alfa Romeos where coincidently he served his apprenticeship with Norman’s of Westminster in Vauxhall, which was a Citroen and Fiat dealership. He then specialised with Fiat. This experience has stood him in good stead as he now has an in depth knowledge and training in the mechanical side of things, he then left Fiat and came to Norfolk to work with his brothers, John and Sam.

He started out in the workshop and moved to Service Reception after 4 years. Joe was known for his ‘chatty’ disposition and couldn’t help but talk to the customers about the new vehicles in the showroom, often persuading them to have a new car rather than get their car serviced! ‘Time to change’ - and very often they did. His brothers’ noticed his natural salesmanship and promptly moved him into the showroom. This has been his natural arena ever since. He was at the Diss branch for 2 years, Great Yarmouth for 7 years and finally Bury St Edmunds for the past 14 years. Even in his spare time he takes his 1982 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV 2.0 to rallies with the Alfa Romeo Owners Club (much to his wife’s annoyance!). Joe had always had ambitions of setting up on his own so when his brother Felix offered him a space next to his own garage The Chequered Flag, Attleborough, he jumped at the chance. Offering nearly new and used Fiats &

Alfa Romeos, with the backup of all the servicing, Mot’s and valeting from next door. The above opening launches the new independent business, Joe Desira Car Sales, as East Anglia’s ‘ITALIAN CAR SPECIALIST’.
