HEALTH & WELLBEING
www.DispatchMagazine.co.uk
Earwax: Friend or Foe? Teresa Sadler RHAD FSHAA, Audiologist from The Hearing Care Centre explains… of the ear canal skin, means that older people are more likely to experience a wax blockage. Does earwax need to be removed? Healthy ears produce wax and it does not need to be removed unless it has caused dulled hearing, itchiness or discomfort. The ear canal has a selfcleaning action.
Earwax is an oily substance produced by glands at the entrance to the ear canal, which it protects and lubricates. The amount of wax produced varies from person to person dependent on their lifestyle, diet, age, skin condition, anxiety levels and anatomy of the ear canal. There are two distinct forms of earwax: ‘wet’ and ‘dry’. Most people in Britain have the ‘wet’ type of earwax. You are more likely to have excess wax if you have a high fat diet, if you are elderly or of an anxious disposition, if you have narrow ear canals, if your parents had excess wax problems, or if you try to remove wax using an object in the ear, such as a cotton bud. As part of the ageing process the glands secrete less sebum (oily secretion), often causing wax to be drier and harder. This, together with the reduction in movement
Issue 17 2013
As wax is produced only at the entrance to the ear canal and the movement of the ear canal is outwards, some wax may appear on a cotton bud when it is removed from the ear, but the majority of the wax will have been pushed from the normal position, backwards down the ear canal. So please do not use cotton buds! How can I stop my ear wax problems? Olive Oil: Olive oil is a gentle lubricant which lubricates the skin and allows wax to soften and break down easier. The Hearing Care Centre recommends the use of Earol®, a fine grade of olive oil spray (available at www. hearingcarecentre.co.uk/shop £5.59) Ear Wax Removal: This may be needed if olive oil does not work. This can be done using ear irrigation, using
luke warm water to flush out the blockage of wax. It can also be using suction and picking techniques. Ear wax removal can be carried out by the trained audiology team at The Hearing Care Centre or by a nurse at your registered GP surgery. Halloween Tips ...for your own little monsters! Pumpkin Carving!
Stranger Danger!
Carving a pumpkin for your children takes away the fun for them, but if you don’t your child to be handling a sharp knife then an easy alternative could be paint, markers or a pumpkin decorating kit is still loads of fun without the risk!
Never let your child go into a stranger’s house! Ensure they only go to houses with the lights on or with a Halloween decoration outside, this ensures that the person is happy to celebrate Halloween and take part in sweet giving!
Sweets and Treats! Plan Your Route! You can never be too careful when taking sweets from strangers, even if it is Halloween. Make sure that you do not let your children eat any treats what have not been examined by you, this means you can check for tampering of wrappers. And you may get a chance to eat a piece! Stay Safe Be Seen! Make sure that your child can be seen in the dark by helping them choose a bright costume or adding reflective tape to their bag or costume!
Make sure you plan your route or your child’s route so that you will always know where they are and a well lit route is better than a dark route. Making sure they know what time to be home and how important it is that they are home by that time and having your child check in at home if the route is long is always good for a parents nerves so making sure they have a mobile or check back at home are good ideas!
