The Masons Arms
Philli Chillies
On Whiting Street has undergone major refurbishment recently and is embarking on its first real ale festival on August 16th to 18th.
After being made redundant several years ago, I decided to start my own business (Philli Chillies) doing what I love best, gardening and cooking.
With 27 Ales to choose from and the launch of the outside bar
“The Masons Elbow” it is sure to be a great weekend. Also the Masons Arms will be running a stall on the Food and Drink Festival outside Marks and Spencer offering selection of what the pub offers.
I have always loved chillies so what better than to focus on them? We grow our own chillies and turn them into delicious chutneys, sauces, oils and vinegars. We also sell chilli plants, fresh, dried and smoked chillies. We cater for the milder end of the chilli taste market (as well as those who like a lot of heat ) and concentrate on taste rather than burning heat. Philli Chillies can be contacted on 01953 498517 or contacted via their website at www.phillichillies.com. You are guaranteed a warm reception!

The State Or Your Family The Decision Is Yours! Seeing a loved one suffering from a long term and possibly permanent illness is heart breaking. But imagine how much more difficult and frustrating it can be when you learn that the spouse, parent or next of kin of the patient legally cannot make decisions or influence their medical treatment. Your frustration will increase sharply if you know beyond all doubt that it is a treatment that he/she would not have wanted! A recent case made headlines when a family were over ruled and the medical team, supported by the Courts, resuscitated their mother despite her previously stating strong feeling against resuscitation. She had in fact made her feeling plain to her family, her solicitor and her own GP well in advance, and so the family were astounded when the Court ruled against them. All because nothing was in writing! It need not have been that way, and the Courts not necessary thanks to the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA). The Act gives very adult the ability to bestow any person or persons they trust with the authority to act, speak and sign for you when you are unable to yourself. This authority can even include, if you so wish, the option of allowing your attorney(s) the authority to withhold life sustaining treatment. This can be extremely comforting if you have concerns about this aspect of your medical treatment. The authority is called a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). There is an LPA (property) for financial matters and an LPA (personal welfare) for health and medical related matters.
In medical matters, if you prefer not to nominate an attorney you can instead opt for an Advanced Directive (Living Will), wherein you make your own decisions, in writing, in advance. Although a cheaper option it can be
a lot more complicated and is not suitable for everyone. Avoid if you can, choosing between an LPA (personal) and a Living Will on the basis of cost, but rather on the option that gives you most peace of mind. As to cost of an Lasting Power of Attorney, you can get and complete your own forms for free, but there will still be the registration fee to pay. Most people find the forms and rules far too complicated and so instead they ask someone like a solicitor or Will Writer to complete their forms for them. But when prices can vary from £200 to £600 or more per LPA you should insist on a fixed price that includes for everything, and a confirmation that there are no hidden extras. Only recently a client told us about a local advert that quoted £360 for two LPAs, but after further enquiry discovered that with all the extra it would in fact cost £1,100, and that was without a further £400- £500 for a home visit! So yes it does pay to ask the right questions!
All too often we complain when the state interferes or prevents us from having full control of our lives, so the usefulness of these documents cannot be overstated. For the first time in our history we have the means of placing our decision making into the hands of people we know, love and trust. But you have to action NOW whilst you have the mental ability to arrange and sign such documents. NEWS FLASH: If you know of anyone who has one of the older and yet unregistered Enduring Powers of Attorney have them check it immediately. If it wasn’t signed and dated by all parties before Oct 2007 it is invalid and cannot be used. For more information or advice call your Beauwater adviser now.

5 Beauty Myths Debunked They are so many commonly held beliefs going around that its often difficult to determine what is and isn’t true. When it comes to beauty you want to know what to take seriously and what not to, so we’ve compiled a brief list to clear at least a few up. 1. Shaving makes hair grow back darker and thicker. Wrong, when you shave the hair may seem thicker as it grows back, but this is because the hair is thickest at its base. It won’t become thicker over time. 2. It’s wrong to pluck your eyebrows. False, many girls are under the impression you should ‘only pluck below the brow’. This isn’t the case, you can pluck anywhere and nothing bad will really happen. 3. Toothpaste will get rid of pimples. Your mother may well have told you this but it will only work for a handful
of people. Most toothpaste contains mint and will just irritate the skin. Furthermore, if the skin’s broken over the pimple, then toothpaste is likely to cause inflammation. 4. Chocolate and other sweets give you acne. This too is wrong, acne is caused by build up of grease and certain bacteria on the skin. Chocolate and other sweet foods don’t affect those so they can’t be held accountable. 5. It’s possible to make your pores smaller. Incorrect, the size of your pores is determined by your genetics unfortunately, whilst it is possible to make your pores less apparent by exfoliating at least 3 times a week, you can’t change their actual size, so don’t spend too much money on products that claim to.
