WELCOME The small, friendly school that gets results for individuals
Thetford Grammar School is a friendly and family based community, a high achieving co-educational independent day school in East Anglia, from rising 4s to the Sixth Form. The strength of this “all through” school is that it enables us to place great emphasis on a supportive environment, one in which pupils take responsibility for themselves and for each other. Our pupils come from all round the region, Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, a testament to our popularity. But come and see for yourselves. Bring your children for a ‘taster’ day with us. Let them be the best judge of whether TGS is the right environment for them. We are confident they will say yes!

East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) Could you be a volunteer? East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) supports families and cares for children and young people with lifethreatening conditions across Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Essex and Norfolk. Volunteers are crucial to the successful running of EACH and help keep our vital services going. With £6 million to
raise every year, we’re always looking for local people who can help out. Long-standing EACH volunteer Marion Mason, who along with a number of volunteers, has helped raise over £157,000 for EACH in the past 10 years. Marion said: “Get the feel good factor and fundraise for EACH! You’ll meet lots
of lovely people and get a great sense of satisfaction knowing you’re making a real difference to such an important local charity.” You can become involved as much or as little as you want - from helping at an EACH event, to picking up a cheque or collection pot to going the whole
hog and hosting your fundraising events– it’s all appreciated. For more information about volunteering at EACH, or to find out about forthcoming events, visit www. each.org.uk or call the Nikki Brown at the Suffolk Fundraising office on 01473 276195.

Dreams Of Dreams: You Heard It Here First! Moyse’s Hall Museum Unearths Pure ‘Rock And Roll’ Gem of Local Music History Moyse’s Hall Museum is to host to one of the most fascinating record launches this year after its Loving the 70s Exhibition unearthed one of the quirkiest and most unusual tales of local, and even national, rock and roll history. Volunteer researcher Aimée Blampied, 28, had no idea when she found a faded local newspaper clipping about a world-record breaking, non-stop, 102 hour musical jam by a young band from Bury St Edmunds in 1970, quite what she had stumbled on. For not only was the band’s guitarist Steve Vaughan-Williams, now 63, still playing in the town - but is also about to have a single he recorded over 40 years ago re-released by a new East Anglian record label. Spoke Records contacted Steve after spotting some vintage local TV news of the marathon charity blues jam by the guitarist’s late 60s/early70s band called Smoke, on YouTube, and asked if they could re-release a single the band had recorded called Dreams of Dreams. One of the record label’s founders, Col Wolfe, 42, from Newmarket, had been a fan of the original 1970 Smoke single - ever since he bought it at record fair 20 years ago, and felt the time was right to release the perfect combination of 70s sounds and production to a whole new generation. Rare copies of the original single, meanwhile - the Bury band’s only release - have been changing hands privately for up to £700 as the track is still revered by psych-rock music aficionados, regularly played DJs and is still packing dance floors all over the country - unbeknown to Steve.
surprise, and we thought what better place to hold the official launch for Dreams of Dreams than during our exhibition dedicated to leisure and entertainment in the 70s.” Moyse’s Hall is one of 11 museums across Suffolk and Hertfordshire to join forces for the two-year ‘Saving the 70s’ project, led by the Association of Suffolk Museums. The project has been awarded a £247,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Researchers also managed to find the original Smoke video by Tom Taylor, one of the early pioneers of pop videos for programmes such as Top of the Pops, and who also lived locally at the time. Said Steve Vaughan-Williams, from Bury St Edmunds and who now plays in the Bury Folk Collective: “I had a phone call from Spoke this time last year asking if they could re-release my band’s single from 40 years ago! It was certainly a surprise as I hadn’t heard it in as many years, but thought, why not. “The limited edition record package they have produced is stunning and even includes 4 track including the complete version of Dreams of Dreams, with an extra verse to the original we recorded for Revolution Records in London in 1970. It was wonderful to hear the record again, as it was the extra verse: it was the best one.” Said Col Wolfe, of Spoke Records: “We set up Spoke records as a hobby between friends to produce vinyl records for bands which we believe really should have made it. For every Rolling Stones there were 100 local bands trying to make it.
“We all loved the story of Smoke and gave it pride of place at the entrance of the 70s exhibition,” said Peter Jones, St Edmundsbury Borough Council Heritage Officer.
“Dreams of Dreams is a fantastic record and after seeing the YouTube clip, I contacted Steve because I bought the original single 20 years ago and asked if we could re-release it, because it has always been a favourite.
“Steve Vaughan-Williams mentioned the single release to us, quite by

genres makes it the perfect 1970s construction. The production is fantastic too, so always guarantees a busy dancefloor. I was at a 60s/mod weekender in Brighton last bank holiday and this track had a couple of hundred people going crazy to it!” The Dreams of Dreams launch party with Spoke DJ’s playing 70s music including tracks by Smoke, will be held on September 13 between 6.30pm and 8.30pm. The Loving The 70s exhibition runs until October 24. Researcher Aimée Blampied said: “I stumbled across the young lads in the local paper at the time. Being a musician myself I was drawn to the story and I had to read through the next few papers trying to find a follow up of the jam! I was so pleased they made the world record, and that I really like the music too!” About Smoke Steve Vaughan-Williams, Tuffy Ridgeon, Ted Chapman and Billy Gray toured England as Smoke through 1969 and 1970. They played residency gigs in Truro, Weymouth, Exeter and Yeovil, and supported bands such as the Move on Weymouth pier. They travelled around in a van, parking on beaches, sharing flea pit hotel rooms and surviving on a breadline budget. Revolution Records, Smoke’s ‘Dreams of Dreams’ was recorded at Orange Studios. Manfred Mann’s horn section were booked for the session but they failed to show up. Tony Fernandez, who joined the band as drummer in 1970, and plays on the records, later went on to become Rick Wakeman’s main percussionist. In subsequent decades the single has been gradually subsumed, mistakenly, into the archive of a completely different band called ‘The’ Smoke who hailed from York and reached number 45 in the UK singles chart with ‘My Friend Jack‘ in 1967. Thus, ‘Dreams of Dreams’ is now a bonus track on Repertoire Records 1993 CD reissue of The Smoke’s’…
It’s Smoke Time’, until now, that is. (The drummer in the jam video is David Whybrow.) About Spoke Records Spoke Records was founded in September 2010 and is currently run by Andy Cann, Ian Townsend, Col Wolfe. After pooling their resources they started to the record label from scratch and now create high quality 7” vinyl 45rpm records for DJs who love the format, reissue great songs that are either expensive on original or hard to find, reissue great songs that have been overlooked, convert LP only songs to create great double-sided 45s, release brand new material or previously unissued songs, regardless of genre. They are based in Norwich, Newmarket and Brooke. www.spokerecords.co.uk About Moyse’s Hall Moyse’s Hall has looked out over Bury St Edmunds market place for almost 900 years. The landmark 12th century building’s rich and varied past has included serving as the town gaol, workhouse and police station, first opening as a museum in 1899. St Edmundsbury Borough Council News Market regulations should encourage even more shoppers to visit and community project gains backing from councillors New market licence regulations designed to ensure the continuing success of traders in both Bury St Edmunds and Haverhill have been approved by St Edmundsbury Borough Council’s cabinet. Market traders and council officers have worked long and hard together on the revised regulations, which cover everything from the disposal of litter, to health and safety and the conduct of the traders themselves. In return, the regulations offer traders a guarantee that the council will limit the duplication of stalls selling similar items, and that St Edmundsbury will continue to develop and promote the market to attract new shoppers and traders. Cllr Alaric Pugh, St Edmundsbury’s Cabinet member for Economic Growth said: “We have hugely successful markets both in Bury St Edmunds and Haverhill attracting hundreds of shoppers to the towns each week. They play a key part in the economic growth we are seeking here in West Suffolk, and it is very important that we ensure the continuing economic viability of our markets. “I am very grateful to the market traders, who have played a vital role, giving up their own time to work with our officers in developing these new regulations. They recognise the value of this work, investing in the success of our markets, encouraging new businesses and entrepreneurs, and supporting their continued growth. Managing all the little details is very difficult indeed. “At the heart of this all, we, and the traders, want to ensure that visitors to the market receive an excellent standard
of customer service, go home happy, and want to return to shop again.” Meanwhile Tuesday’s cabinet meeting decided to defer a decision on one of the regulations relating to non-trading activity by political parties or pressure groups on the markets. The council is looking at how it can balance the needs of the market traders, while providing areas where pressure groups and political parties can best be supported in exercising their right to freedom of expression within the town centres. A library project to help people overcome social isolation and improve their IT skills, has received the backing of St Edmundsbury Borough Council. Haverhill Library will launch a series of courses next week, designed to help members of the community use tablets and e-Readers. St Edmundsbury Borough Cllrs Anne Gower and Karen Richardson have both donated money from their locality budgets which have paid for two Google Nexuses to support the project. Cllr Gower, who represents Haverhill North ward said: “There are some people who feel socially isolated and on top of that they don’t have access to Wi-Fi or know how to Skype or create an email account. These are all ways that they can keep in contact with their friends and family or to find help or just get information. Other people may be looking to brush up their internet/social media skills - either way the library is a valuable resource supporting these skills and enabling access to the internet.” Cllr Richardson, who represents Haverhill
East, is also chairman of the Friends of Haverhill Library. “There is far more to the library than just books. Cllr Gower and I regularly hold our surgeries here where residents can discuss the issues affecting their lives. “The Friends group has been running for about a year and has raised money for various new bits of kit, not least the installation of free Wi-Fi. I am pleased that both Cllr Gower and myself have been able to help towards funding this technology project out of our new locality budgets. I am sure that it will prove invaluable to those members of the community who are perhaps, for one reason or another, the most socially isolated.”
The survey also asked for people’s suggestion either on how the council could generate more income or make savings in order to meet its funding challenges over the next two years. The results are now being analysed but will help councillors make important budget decisions to be announced in preparation for the 2015/16 budget. Cllr John Griffiths, leader of the council said: “I am both delighted by, and grateful to those residents across St Edmundsbury who recognised the importance of taking part in this survey, and have given us their views on possible budget ideas put forward, as well as making additional and alternative ones as requested.
Each course takes place on a Wednesday from 2pm to 4pm and costs£10 each which covers the costs of the tutor. Introduction to iPads and iPhones takes place on 10 September, Introduction to Android tablets and e-Readers on September 17, and Moving on with tablets and e-Readers on 24 September.
We have been very open on the challenges we face, no decisions have been taken, and the views and suggestions put forward will now be fully considered as we move forward to decide how our budget requirements may be best addressed. This has proven to be a very useful, and helpful, exercise.”
To register visit the library or call 01440 702638. Sanphra Willmott, manager at the library, said it is also hoped that the tablets may be loanable to library card holders in the future. The two councillors donated £120 each. Full course details can be found at www.suffolklibraries. co.uk/branches/haverhill-library/
Cllr David Ray, St Edmundsbury cabinet member for resources and performance said: “There have been various alternative suggestions put forward. All of these will be looked at in more detail to see if they can help us to achieve the £1.5m of savings that we have to make in order to keep Council Tax down.
Close to 1,000 people have taken the time out of their busy lives to take part in a St Edmundsbury Borough Council budget consultation. Postal and online responses to specific questions on how St Edmundsbury may deliver£1.5m of savings, were filled out by some 988 people across the borough.
Residents have also had their say about the ideas we put forward. These will now be analysed and will inform public debate in the council chamber over the coming months on how we generate income or make savings. That in turn will lead to the announcement of our budget early next year.”

Wade Windows are members of The League of Professional Craftsmen and of FENSA who are the governing body for the new Building Regulations Part L. They have a dealership with one of the most experienced manufactures of PVCu windows and doors.
• Standard B rated window • Secured by Design optional extra Composite doors are a modern twist on the more traditional looking wooden front doors, similar to PVCu panels in that they come in a wide range of styles, designs and colours but utilising a 44mm thick, fully insulated door slab rather than a 28mm standard panel.
They offer The Super Fortress, Internally Beaded Window range, which is a state of the art technology, offering high security and peace of mind. With a fully contoured outer frame, sash and glazing bead the Super Fortress™ 70 will enhance the appearance of any home, and with low sightline grey weather seals and a multi chambered construction the window will also provide an excellent barrier against the British weather, improving both heat and noise insulation.
The main advantage of a composite door over a standard panel door are that they are more substantial, being 44mm thick rather than 28mm thick and therefore have the appearance of a more traditional timber front door rather than a plastic panel door. However because of the materials used they have all the benefits of a panel door, i.e. they will not warp, rot, twist, bow or crack and never need painting!
Features include: • High security internal beading • Contoured frame, sash and glazing bead • Multi point shootbolt locking • Key locking handles • Low sightline grey gaskets • Double weather seals
Wade Windows offer the complete range from the more traditional Victorian and Edwardian designs to the modern Sun Lounge design, so no matter how you intend to use your conservatory, style comfort and peace of mind are assured, in a design that is exclusively yours.

Everything Starts With A Choice...
Everyday we are constantly making choices, shall I get up or shall I lay here for just 5 more minutes.... Shall I have a bath or a shower or not bother today? Shall I wear these clothes, or these, shall I put these shoes on or would these be better ? You get the idea. Some choices we make are fairly insignificant and they don’t really have a big impact on our daily lives. These are the choices we routinely make without really thinking about them, and it won’t really make much difference if we choose this or that, life will just carry on regardless, and we won’t really think about what might have happened if we had made a different choice today regarding whatever it is we are thinking about. However, some choices we make can have a lasting effect on our lives, they are dramatic choices, choices we need to stop and think about, choices which can have a lasting effect on our destiny, and it’s these choice we need to think about and make very carefully. We choose how we live our lives, what job we do, our careers, who we work for and what we earn. Ultimately it is our choice. Most people would choose to be rich (you choose the definition of Rich) rather than poor, most people would choose to earn more money than they currently do, and most people would choose to have more family time rather than being at work all the time. So it’s our choice, we choose, but how many of us actually do choose, rather than just accept that’s the way it is. If we all have the choice, why do so many not choose to be better or learn more or earn more or spend more time with family and friends or whatever it would take to make us better than we currently are? If you had to choose right now to be rich or poor, what would you choose? If you choose to be poor that’s great, it’s your choice, you’ve made that decision, so go and get on with it. If you choose to be rich, fantastic, that’s great too, again it’s your choice, now go and get on with that. If you choose to do nothing or choose to change nothing, guess what will happen, correct...nothing, you will stay exactly as you are and nothing will change! If you choose to want to earn more, have more time with your family, relieve some of the stresses and strains of life and you choose to want to have more enjoyment in your life, this is the best choice possible as you have chosen to do something to make a change, and given that you have made the choice I can now help you. So… YOU have chosen to make a change but you’re not sure how; I’d like to introduce you to a fantastic business opportunity that you can work around your other commitments, like your current job or childcare. I’m looking to work closely with just a handful of energetic, ambitious and positive people who have made a choice to create a better life for themselves. People who I can work with, people who are willing to learn, who will attend local training events with me, people who will not find excuses for not earning whatever amount of money they want. I have chosen to do this, and it is one of the best choices I have ever made. I run a total of 4 businesses and I have 2 young children to look after, run to school, after school clubs and weekend activities, yet I still chose to find time to improve my situation. Therefore “I haven’t got time for this” is just an excuse, it’s your choice, but it is just an excuse. If you haven’t got time, choose to get up earlier. Richard Branson only has 24 hours in each of his days, he just chose to be successful. He made that choice! If you want to earn extra money, only YOU can do that. No one else can make it happen, only you. So if you would like to share in my success, earn extra money, build your own business with my help and guidance and actually achieve what you’re really worth, make a choice right now to ring me and I’ll show you how. What have you got to loose? There is no commitment in your looking to see what it’s all about. If you choose to get in touch I can help you and together we will make it happen. If you choose do nothing guess what… nothing will change for you. But it’s your choice, so choose wisely!!
