Autumn 2013 Return For The Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds’ Spell-binding production of Mansfield Park. After a phenomenally successful premiere in 2012, Tim Luscombe’s “captivating” adaptation of Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park will return to tour in Autumn 2013, visiting 11 venues around the country including the UK’s only remaining authentic Regency playhouse, Bury St Edmunds’ Theatre Royal. Directed by Colin Blumenau, Luscombe’s sharply drawn adaptation of one of Austen’s most challenging novels premiered to critical and popular acclaim last year, and the Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds is delighted to be able to bring this spell-binding production to audiences around the country for the second year running, celebrating 200 years since the novel was completed in 1813. Mansfield Park tells the tale of intelligent young Fanny Price, who is unceremoniously uprooted from her humble family home and dropped into

Or will she be forced to marry the charismatic Henry Crawford for connections and wealth alone? Director Colin Blumenau was the Artistic Director of the Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds for sixteen years, and his unmatched knowledge of Georgian theatre led the development of the theatre’s Restoring the Repertoire© programme. Along with this he is an accomplished actor and writer with such critically acclaimed productions to his name as Dick Turpin’s Last Ride and an adaptation of Cider with Rosie along with being well known for his role as PC ‘Taffy’ Edwards in Thames TV’s The Bill.

Tim Luscombe has been described as theatre’s ‘Austen champion’, with his other acclaimed adaptations - including Northanger Abbey and Persuasion - being described as “absolutely delightful: witty, fast moving and stylish”, with “dazzling timing and clever cutting (that) not only brings Austen’s

How do I know if I need a hearing test? As hearing loss is often a gradual process, its occurrence is not always obvious to us. Often it is those closest to us that notice we are not hearing things the way we once used to. There are a number of possible symptoms that may be indicative of an underlying hearing loss. If you recognise any of them, book yourself a hearing test:

What happens during a hearing test? The assessment begins with an examination of the ear, the ear canals, and the ear drums. A measurement is then taken to assess your middle ear health and function. Speech Testing is then carried out to determine how clearly speech is perceived at a comfortable listening level. Lastly, Pure-Tone Testing is completed by having the patient listen for very soft tones or beeps. The Audiologist will then review the results with you.

Running until Sunday 29th September 2013 Art Exhibition: Margin This exhibition of paintings and found objects by Kate Jackson and Cate Hadley will reveal the margins of Bury St Edmunds. From the estate houses and industrial sites that sit on its periphery, to the wastelands and forgotten playing fields of its interior. Open viewing evening: Saturday 14 September 6pm - 7.30pm.

How much is a hearing aid? The cost of a hearing aid is influenced by a variety of factors, but mostly by the level or sophistication of the hearing aid technology. An entry-level hearing aid will be less expensive and will also have fewer features, whereas a more advanced hearing aid may be more expensive and will have many more features that enhance sound quality and your ability to hear speech when in background noise. Hearing aids with The Hearing Care Centre start from around £300 and can go up to £2,500.

Saturday 7th September, 7.30pm Path To Peace Concert RAF Honington Voluntary Band will pay a moving tribute to servicemen and women of our Armed Forces. £13

LOCKDALES AUCTIONEERS 11

Lockdales Auctioneers A special antiques and collectables valuation event will be taking place soon in your area. The experts of Lockdales Auctioneers will be providing free valuations to the public on Tuesday 17th September, 10am2pm, at Blackbourne Community Centre, Blackbourne Road, Elmswell, Suffolk, IP30 9UH. There will be experts providing valuations on the following types of collectables: Coins (including British & World, sovereigns, Krugerrands, Royal Mint commemoratives & proof sets), stamps, banknotes, medals & militaria, antiques, clocks, watches, jewellery, gold, silver, pre-1900 documents/books & maps, cigarette-cards, postcards, pre-1960 sporting programmes & tickets, scientific instruments, swords, bayonets & de-activated weapons. No appointment is necessary at this event, simply turn up with your items and our valuers will be happy to see you. Members of the public will have the option, if they wish, to consign their goods to auction (subject to terms & conditions). Cash purchase offers are also available. Valuations will be provided free of charge, with no obligation. High quality illustrated

catalogues from previous auctions will be given away on a complimentary basis in order for the public to get a better idea of the services available. These valuation days have proved to be very popular in the past, and we have conducted hundreds of them across the UK. Some of the best items we have auctioned were brought to us at these events, such as two pieces of Russian 17th century enamelled silverware, a bowl and a lidded pot, which we later sold on behalf of the owners for over £75,000. You never know what your old heirlooms could be worth! Top Tips:The hottest markets for collectables at the moment are India, China and Asia in general, so if you have some old coins, stamps, postal covers or banknotes from those places you could be in luck! Be on the lookout for football programmes dated before 1960. Those from the 1940s and earlier are the most valuable.

Cigarette Cards from small World War One era manufacturers can be good, particularly those of Taddy. The rarest set of all is Taddy Clowns, which has been known to sell for as much as £15,000. Iconic English coins such as 1930s Wreath Crowns, the 1905 Halfcrown, the Una & the Lion Five Pounds, 1911 and 1937 proof sets, especially the gold ones, have proven to be great investments.

If you have any questions feel free to contact Lockdales’ Martlesham offices: 01473 627110, sales@lockdales.com. We will also be holding an event in Long Melford on Monday 16th Sept. For further information see our website: www.lockdales.com

Condition is everything so try to keep anything you have in a safe, dry environment (not the garden shed or garage!). The number one golden rule is: Never try to clean anything that you think might be of value, especially coins and medals. Only trained experts and restorers will know how to preserve something without damaging it. Collectors and dealers prefer everything to be ‘as found’, even if it may look scruffy to you. If you try to clean a coin, with a cloth and/or household products for example, you will damage the surface detail and de-value the item.

MOTORING review 13

Porsche 911 Carrera 4 By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist

Tweet Tim: @carwriteups

THIS GERMAN sports car maker seems to stir up my childhood memories. I had handfuls of Corgi and Dinky cars and the Porsche models were always the ones I cherished the most. I even had a 911 police car as part of my ‘Race and Chase’ game – an iffy imitation of the far superior Scalextric slot-car set.

Behind the wheel, that powerhouse enables the supernatural to happen every time you depress the accelerator. Fuel is injected fractions of a second prior to combustion, the engine responding spontaneously to even the slightest movement of your right foot. This isn’t only the case when picking up the pace, but also when lifting off.

So, even though I can’t afford one now I’m all grown up with kids of my own - I never pass up the opportunity to borrow a Porsche. The 911 in particular seems to leave an impression on everyone. Why is this? Well, I reckon it’s the classic coupe shape - and the pure ‘racing car’ yowl the rear-engined beast makes when it comes ‘alive’. It’s an iconic sports car - simple as that.

The seven speed manual transmission adds to the entertainment mix. Its slick action soon makes it seem entirely natural to shift all the way up to that seventh cog on the straights.

The current Carrera 4 builds upon the legend further by providing all-wheel drive. The four-by-four grip is supplied via wizardry known as Porsche Traction Management (PTM). This dispenses power to the front and rear axles as road and driving conditions change - making for a thrilling, responsive, yet stable drive. Unbelievably, despite the shot of adrenaline the 911 Carrera 4 gives you every time you go out for a spin, it doesn’t wolf down fuel. On a 100 mile trip from the Midlands to Norfolk I averaged 30mpg. That isn’t bad when you consider a 3.4 litre slab is shoehorned into the car.

As for looks - well I’ve touched a little on those already - the outline of the 911 is the ‘meat in the sandwich’. Aside from brute force, it’s why you buy the car. So, subtlety is what the present Carrera 4 is all about. You’ll see modifications to the nose and tail and the more overt use of lighting technology: bi-xenon headlights and gorgeous, sparkly, LED daytime driving lights are fitted as standard. The 911 Carrera 4 is also wider across the rear wheel arches than its two-wheel drive sibling. And further definition is added courtesy of a reflective trim that spans the width between the striking rear lights.

Visit: www.carwriteups.co.uk

Rest assured though - your pricey pride and joy won’t go missing very easily. Fitted to every 911 is a Porsche Vehicle Tracking System (VTS) - a

highly developed vehicle security package approved to Thatcham Category 5 standard. Can’t be bad, eh?

One Third Of UK Drivers Revive! Admit To Not Having An MOT

MOTORING 15

The Smart Way To Repair Minor Bodywork Damage.

One third of motorists admit to having driven a car knowing their MOT had expired, a violation that carries a fine of up to £1,000 - not to mention a violation which also invalidates your insurance. This was found in a survey conducted by the Society of Motoring Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

up with Trading Standards Approved Garage Network and Motor Codes to offer a free MOT reminder.

The survey found that of 1,000 motorists, 67% had driven without an MOT for up to a week, 24% for up to a month, 7% had driven without MOT for 6 months and 2% admitted to driving without MOT for a period longer than 6 months.

This service is available at www. passmymot.co.uk.

It’s not difficult to forget about your expiring MOT, so we can give the 67% the benefit of the doubt.

This includes checking tyres for baldness, making sure the lights work and that the window wipers are operating properly.

However, over the course of six months you would remember, so it’s safe to say the 2% knew that they were driving without MOT did nothing about it, which is cause for concern.

This is all part of the SMMT’s ‘Minute or Two’ initiative which encourages motorists to carry out ten visual checks of their care prior to the MOT test.

Many dealers are now offering a free pre-MOT check as well as sending out a reminder before the next is due. So there really is less and less of an excuse to drive without MOT.

Fed up with a scuff or scrape on your car bodywork or alloy wheels but don’t want to claim on your insurance or be without it while it is at the garage?

to suit you. Your no claims bonus will be unaffected and the job can be done without the hassle and inconvenience of having to take the vehicle to the garage.

Then why not call out local technician David Dunn from Revive! to fix it quickly and cost effectively at your home or place of work?

If the area of damage is the size of an A4 sheet of paper or smaller, then smart repair is the most appropriate way to tackle the job. For more extensive damage David will always recommend that owners take their vehicle to a reputable bodyshop as SMART repair is only intended for those minor yet annoying scuffs and scrapes.
