DISS Sound Sleep Beds Just how old is your bed? Have you got the Seven Year Hitch? If you want to get the best possible night’s sleep so you look and feel your best, we recommend you start to think about replacing your bed after seven years. “A mattress that looks OK, may not actually be OK, that’s the hitch!” Even after seven years, your bed may look okay but it may not be giving you the support or comfort you need for a healthy, refreshing night’s sleep. Here’s just some of the reasons why: A study by The Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) showed beds that were just six years old were much less comfortable than a new one. A study by The Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) showed that beds as little as six years old could offer significantly less support and comfort than a new one, thanks to wear and tear not just from body weight and movement but also sweat and debris such as skin, scales, hair etc. (Investigating the life of a mattress, a study devised and conducted by FIRA

04 | March 2016

International for the National Bed Federation, 2011). Top sleep expert Dr Chris Idzikowski found buying a new bed could be more effective than sleeping tablets! Research by leading sleep expert Dr Chris Idzikowski, which measured the amount and quality of sleep people were getting on a new bed compared to their old one, found that, when replacing an uncomfortable bed, a new bed was associated with an increase of 42 minutes sleep. Dr Idzikowski commented that “research on Over The Counter (OTC) sleep aids has never shown a better improvement than 5-10 minutes extra sleep. (New Bed Old Bed Study by Dr Chris Idzikowski, commissioned by The Sleep Council 1998.) Yuk! On average we lose half a pint of fluid each night and shed a pound of dead skin cells a year. No wonder asthmatriggering dust mites love our mattresses. The UK has one of the largest number of asthma sufferers in Europe – five million plus and growing. Over 2000 fatalities a year are attributed to asthma. Dust mites are a major trigger for

asthma. We lose up to half a pint (284ml) or more of fluid each night – which our beds have to absorb and we shed around 1.3oz (10gm) of skin per week – that’s over 1lb (520g) in a year – much of into our beds. This combination of a warm and moist environment, coupled with a ready food source (those skin scales) makes our beds an ideal habitat for dust mites. According to the Medical Entomology Centre, Cambridge, just two micrograms per gram (mcg/g) of dust mite allergen can cause hypersensitivity in asthma sufferers, while 10 mcg/g can pose a serious health risk. Around one in five aged mattresses can contain between two and 10mcg/g of the dust mite allergen and one in 20 has above 10mcg/g. At Sound Sleep we understand that changing your bed regularly is very important, but can also be a costly thing to do each time. Our bodies are important to us, so we have to look after them in the most cost effective way. We have over 100 beds available to try in store, starting from the more

economy mattresses, pocket sprung mattresses and even mattresses with pressure relieving support foams like memory foam, latex, geltex and now the brand new Slumberland Affinity Foam. Our mattress specialists are highly trained in mattress technology and are able to assist you to make the right decision for your body and for your pocket. We don’t high pressure anyone, but we do recommend asking for help and advise as this will help you make an informed decision. Remember it’s not only your bed that needs changing regularly, your bedding does too. Our bedding department is stocked full of great pillows, duvets and mattress protectors to help aid a restful nights sleep. DISS Lydia’s walk Ten year-old school girl, Lydia Hawker, has raised £1500 towards the community project for her family’s Wymondham church after walking a mammoth 100 miles along Hadrian’s Wall. The epic sponsored eight-day trek that included driving rain and steep hills did not deter the plucky youngster, a competitive gymnast at Norfolk Academy. “I knew I could do it. I did not have a single blister or feel tired afterwards,” said Lydia having completed a brief training in the Peak District. With the help of 45 sponsors her efforts brought a further cash booster to Hope Community Church’s flourishing community hub at Ayton Road, Wymondham. Hub Community Project is enriching the community after church members have dug deep to provide £200,000 for the building which they share. Lydia was accompanied by her mother, Selina, and grandmother during the school holidays last year. The three generations of walkers averaged 12 miles a day across industrial and scenic landscapes in the north of England. They finished the final stretch after a gruelling 16 miles. “I never imagined Lydia would finish it when we walked through two days of endless rain at the beginning. One day I needed four changes of rain jacket to keep dry and Lydia’s socks were soaking,” said Selina who helped plan the route with daily

provisions and a residential base. Hope Community Church and Hub Community Project moved from Fairland Street to their new premises last May. Activities have grown in line with the town’s expansion, providing much needed community facilities and activities to enrich the community. “This dream has been made possible by the commitment and sacrificial giving of church members who provided £200,000 for the building alterations,” says church leader, Grantley Watkins. “The improved facilities and ample parking have enabled people to access the community facilities with greater ease. The resulting growth of the community projects, with their widening resources, is established evidence for the need of the site’s second development phase which is expected to increase the activities of the community rooms threefold,” says Mr Watkins. The town’s Hub Community Project includes support for carers, youth, families and the lonely. It also provides ESOL (English for speakers of other languages) lessons and award-winning ‘Hoppers’ toddler groups. DISS Diss Museum Tristram Cary: Music Under The Radar Welcome to a multi-media exhibition documenting Tristram Cary’s pioneering electronic music and soundtrack scores for Doctor Who, Quatermass and The Pit and Ladykillers. Featuring a prototype VCS3 synth, graphic scores, photographs and memorabilia. March 12th - April 9th (Wed-Sat). http://www. dissmuseum.co.uk Diss is only 12 miles away from Cary’s private electronic music studio in Fressingfield (one of the first in the country). In the display we have an article written by Museum Manager Basil Abbott as a young reporter working for the Diss Express. Basil was luckily enough to visit the studio and recalls the composer sporting a distinctive yellow pipe! Cary bought a family cottage in Fressingfield in 1958 and up to 1962 worked largely on film scores with no electricity. This exhibition focuses on the composers output from1963-74 before he emigrated to Adelaide, Australia. Tristram Cary was making electronic music far from the established centres over the continent (Paris, IRCAM). Cary faced many challenges in making music (not simply geographical). PRS disputed paying the composer royalties as they did not consider his groundbreaking style to constitute music. Cary worked for RCM in London and set one of the first teaching schools of music technology and worked as a consultant for EMS studios and helped design the iconic VCS3 synth. EMS or Electronic Music Studios (founded by Peter Zinovieff, David Cockerell and Tristram Cary in 1967) was a British sound lab that aimed to explore the new world of electronic music composition using cutting edge computers (then not a household item). In the late 1960s Zinovieff of EMS had one of the most powerful computers to be found in private hands. In the late 60’s a PDP computer would cost up to £5000, as much as a house. In order to fund the project Peter wife sacrificed her diamond tiara to raise the money for a home computer. Peter helped introduce sequencing, automation, randomness and sampling to music studios at a time when this was not commonplace. The studio was frequented by Stockhausen and Harrison Birtwistle. Commuting to EMS in London involved a herculean 220 mile journey for the composer (getting up at 4.30am in the morning) which discounting petrol and food often resulted in a net loss for the composer. His commitment to pushing boundaries is a source of inspiration to rural musicians who may feel geographically isolated from the mainstay of the privileged elite (based in major urban centres). The word synthesiser had not even entered the language at this point. The idea of a package of devices with several oscillators, filters, reverberation and various treatments was not known. In 1963 these were conceived of as separate devices. Many of www.DispatchMagazine.co.uk

his early sounds were generated from adapted military surplus from junk stores in London’s then infamous Lyle Street. It was at Fressingfield were Cary thrashed out the design of the infamous VCS3 Synth (in collaboration with David Cockerell). The synth uses a matrix pin system to avoid messy patch cords. It has a joystick adapted from a model airplane kit to control some of the synths unpredictable and surprising sounds. The synth was adopted by famous bands of the late 60’s and 70’s including Pink Floyd, Hawkwind, The Who. It became the synth of choice for Jarre, Eno and Krautrock acts such as Tangerine Dream Cluster and Nue! We have a simulation of the synth on an iPad towards the back of the museum. A concert and exhibition of his music locally is long overdue and will help raise the profile of the composer on a local and national level. Although Britten is well known in East Anglia, Tristram Cary’s presence is less documented and deserves public attention. It is important that Avant Garde music reaches rural audiences who are often excluded from metropolitan focused contemporary music circles. The concert will take place at St Mary’s Hall, Diss on the 9th April 2016 at 7.30pm. The event will be free to the public (donations welcome). The concert will feature two of Tristram Cary’s chance music compositions. Trios (Turntables and VCS3 Synth) performed by Ian Helliwell, Simon James and Narcissus (Flute and electronics) performed by Lawrence Casserley and Simon Desorgher. We have on display rare largely unseen photos of Cary’s Fressingfield studio in Suffolk. 3 largely unseen Industrial Films: Power Train (1960) Shaped for Living (1972) This is BP (1973) and Scrap to Sculpture (1967). The exhibition features a listening post with clips of the composer pieces and a TV screen featuring excerpts of the composers work. Cary is perhaps best known for his film soundtracks for films such as The Ladykillers (1955) Blood From The Mummies Tomb (1972) Quatermass and the Pit (1967) and Doctor Who 1963+ (The Mutants, The Daleks, The Daleks Masterplan and The Gunfighters). Cary’s music is of huge national and local importance because it intuitively utilised electronic noise to speak directly to the emotions at a time when this was not commonplace. Cary showed us the power of the film soundtrack and its potential to stir primal fears and anxieties. Fressingfield was a site of huge personal and artistic significance for the composer and his ashes were sprinkled at the site of his studio. 2016 March | 07

DISS jackamans solicitors Business as usual - or is it? Many businesses operating in this country do not own the freehold to the premises they run their business from, but rent them from a Landlord under the terms of a Commercial Lease. This arrangement provides flexibility for both the Landlord and the Tenant and also means that the business occupying the premises does not allow too much capital to be locked up in owning the premises. Whilst the flexibility for a business to change its premises from time to time can be seen as advantageous, there are circumstances where

a business can become well-established at leased premises over the years and wishes to continue with that arrangement indefinitely. In order to protect businesses falling into this category, a law was passed in 1954, the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954 (Part 2) relating to business tenancies which provided security of tenure for businesses wishing to continue occupying the premises after a current lease expired. In fact the 1954 Act was substantially amended in 2004 by amongst other things allowing the Landlord and

Tenant in a Commercial Lease to “contract out” so that the Tenant would not have security of tenure. One of the strengths of the 1954 Act for protecting business tenants is that towards the end of the Lease, they can apply for a new tenancy from the Landlord by serving the appropriate Notice within the statutory time limits. However the Landlord is able to serve a notice either accepting the grant of a new Lease (subject to detailed terms and rent) or object to the grant of the Lease on various grounds which could include failure of the Tenant to comply with the covenants in the Lease (such as keeping the premises in repair, payment of rent and

other service charges). If the Landlord continues with its objection to grant a new Lease to the Tenant, then the Tenant can apply to the Court for the grant of a new tenancy. Pending those proceedings going through the Court, an interim position would be established to enable the Tenant to continue occupying the business premises but also continuing to be liable to pay rent. ATTLEBOROUGH New Buckenham Art Exhibition I think it would be fair to say that the New Buckenham Exhibition over the twenty years has built up quite a reputation for being a quality show. It has always been held over the Easter Weekend and this year is no exception. The Opening Night is Friday 25th March starting at 7.30 p.m. and finishing at 10 p.m. admission is £3.00 and this includes your glass of wine and nibbles. It is always a special night where lots of people gather as soon as the doors are open to find their very special picture. Many are sold on this evening and often to people who have bought a picture at the exhibition before. However if you prefer a more calm leisurely viewing then the Saturday, Sunday, or Monday are the days to go and enjoy this cultural event. The exhibition is open on Saturday 26th Sunday 27th and Monday 28th March from 11.a.m to 4.30 p.m. Admission is £1.00

ATTLEBOROUGH ALMARY GREEN Inheritance Tax Boost for Families The Government plans to introduce a new IHT allowance next year for families who pass the family home down through the generations. Alison Rudd looks at how the new measure will work when it comes into force in April 2017. The Family Home Allowance – or “residence nil rate band” to give its official name – will help those couples or individuals who own their own home and who want to pass it on to their children. This new allowance, due to take effect in April 2017, will be granted on top of the existing individual Nil Rate Band – the amount you can leave to your heirs without incurring an Inheritance Tax

(IHT) liability – which currently stands at £325,000 per person. Any part of your estate that you pass to a spouse or civil partner is already free of IHT and any unused Nil Rate Band can be transferred to your spouse or civil partner on death, so if you leave everything to your spouse, his or her total current combined Nil Rate Band will be £650,000. Under the current rules, the value of the individual’s share in a property must be calculated when an estate is assessed for any potential IHT payable. The proposed new rules will allow up to a further £100,000 to be added to an individual’s Nil Rate Band if they die

from April 2017 onwards and leave their share of the family home to their children or grandchildren. This new allowance can also be transferred to a spouse or civil partner on death, giving a total combined Nil Rate Band of £850,000 (ie a combined Nil Rate Band of £650,000 plus two Family Home Allowances of £100,000) if the surviving spouse or civil partner were to die in the 2017/18 tax year. The Family Home Allowance is due to increase to £175,000 by 2020 so the total combined Nil Rate Band for a couple could potentially reach £1 million at that stage, depending on the value of the property being bequeathed. However, couples with a combined estate value of over £2 million won’t qualify for the full allowance: once their estate hits the £2 million mark, the new allowance will reduce according to the size of the estate. Even if the first spouse/partner dies before April 2017, the surviving spouse/partner may still benefit from the deceased partner’s family home allowance providing he or she dies after April 2017. It’s worth noting that the additional allowance can only be claimed if the family home is left to children or grandchildren of the deceased, including step children and adopted children. It cannot be claimed if the property is bequeathed to other family members or chosen heirs. The new rules may be of

www.DispatchMagazine.co.uk

interest to single parents who own their own home: from 2020, they will be able to bequeath up to £500,000 to their children. The proposals include provisions for instances where couples have downsized in later life, or sold the family home to pay for care fees. In these circumstances the new allowance is expected to be still available in respect of the original family home and the value of the home that was sold will be set against other assets. The new rules are intended to ensure that the vast majority of families will have no Inheritance Tax to pay, despite the increases in property prices. However, there are groups who will not benefit from the new allowance: those with large estates, those who are not home-owners and those without direct family members, for example. To discuss any aspect of your financial well-being, contact Alison at alison.rudd@ almarygreen.com or call 01603 706740. Alison can be found at the offices of M+A Partners, Cyprus Close, Attleborough most Wednesdays and is happy to arrange appointments there or in clients’ own homes. Please note that this article has been written prior to the Budget on 16 March and cannot, therefore, take account of any changes announced then.

Word Premiere! New Lexus LC 500h luxury 2+2 coupe Lexus unveiled its LC 500h luxury 2+2 coupe to the world’s media in Holland this month. Tim Barnes-Clay was at the event in The Hague to find out all about the new model. The LC 500h is important because it signals the next phase in the evolution of Lexus. It blends the dynamic luxury, ultra-rigid, inertia-tuned chassis and lightweight multi-link front suspension of the recently revealed ‘normal’ petrol-powered LC 500, with a brand new Multi Stage Hybrid System. This fresh tech adds a new automatic transmission to the established attributes of Lexus’s full hybrid powertrain to deliver the sharpest and most refined drive from a full hybrid yet, with much stronger and uninterrupted acceleration. The LC 500h features all the elements of a traditional full hybrid powertrain, including a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine, a powerful electric motor and a lithium-ion battery, together with a fourspeed automatic gearbox, mounted at the rear of the hybrid transmission. The electric motor generates better acceleration feel than a conventional engine, and the introduction of physical gears allows for engine revs to be more closely matched to the driver’s use of the throttle The result is a much more direct connection between pedal inputs and vehicle acceleration, with nought to 62mph brought well into the sub-five-second range. design that projects an avant-garde elegance. The coupe’s sporty profile is characterised by its sweeping roofline, which narrows rearward from above the centrally placed occupants to create a distinctive silhouette. It has a long, wheelbase, compact overhangs and a particularly low bonnet line. The LC 500h also has its own lighting signature, created by independent daytime running lights in an arrowhead configuration and ultra-compact triple LED headlamp units. Alongside, the driver’s environment has been ergonomically designed to instil confidence and invite lively driving, with an intuitive layout of the controls and an excellent and supportive seating position. Special attention has been paid to the steering wheel design, with a change in the cross-sectional shape of the rim around its circumference to allow for variations in grip and twisting of the wrist. New, larger magnesium alloy paddle shifts have been profiled for easier hooking with the fingertips and have a more positive action. What’s more, the new LC 500h is fitted with the Lexus Safety System + package of active safety technologies, designed to help prevent an accident, or mitigate the consequences of an impact. The features include a millimetre-radar-controlled Pre-Crash Safety system that can detect both vehicles and pedestrians in the car’s path; All-speed Adaptive Cruise Control; Lane Keep Assist; and Automatic High Beam. The car will be officially launched in Europe in the spring of 2017. Reviewed by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist - tweeting @ carwriteups www.DispatchMagazine.co.uk

ELDERLY The Hearing Care Centre The Effects of Untreated Hearing Loss “What?”, “Huh?”, “Pardon me?”, “Would you mind repeating what you said? I couldn’t understand you.” If you or one of your friends or family members has a hearing loss, then these phrases will be very familiar to you! Many hearing impaired people are aware that their hearing has deteriorated but are reluctant to seek help. Maybe it’s just that they don’t want to acknowledge the problem, are embarrassed by what they see as a weakness, or believe that they can “get by” without using a hearing aid. According

24 | March 2016

to hearing loss charity Action on Hearing Loss, people take on average 10 years to address the effects of hearing loss before getting seeking help. But time and again, research shows us that untreated hearing loss can have a negative impact on social life, psychological well-being, cognitive ability and our overall health. Each can have farreaching implications that go well beyond hearing alone. In fact, those who have difficulty hearing can experience such distorted and incomplete communication that it seriously impacts their professional and personal lives, at times leading to isolation and withdrawal.

Studies have linked untreated hearing loss effects to: • fatigue, tension, stress and depression • irritability, negativism and anger • social rejection and loneliness • avoidance or withdrawal from social situations • reduced alertness and increased risk to personal safety • impaired memory and ability to learn new tasks • reduced job performance and earning power • diminished psychological and overall health

Fortunately, hearing loss is treatable. Hearing aids are currently the best option for individuals suffering from hearing loss, allowing them to hear many of the sounds they have been missing. Many different types of hearing aid are available, packed full of fantastic features and paying a visit to your local audiologist would allow you to better understand what options are available. Norfolk Open Days – FREE hearing checks. This month my team and have organised a series of Open Days in Norfolk to help encourage those with hearing loss to take the first step. The Open Days will allow you to book a hearing assessment free of charge, saving £20 off the normal consultation price.
