Diss Museum Such is his charisma, that when the Dalai Lama enters a room everyone backs away to the wall.
Above: Robert Manning with a bust of his great-great uncle We were told this at Westminster Abbey while awaiting the arrival of His Holiness. But we were assured that he would put us all at our ease. It would not be like a royal occasion; but more like a church fete. For me this event was the fulfilment of a dream. My greatest wish had been to re-create the meeting of a member of the Manning family and Tibet’s spiritual leader. 200 years ago Thomas Manning of Diss travelled to Lhasa to become the first European to meet the Dalai Lama; and the last for a further century. In 2011 Diss Museum commemorated the Manning family, rectors of Diss
for 138 years, on the bi-centenary of Thomas’ journey. Now his great-great nephew Robert (82), who was also christened Thomas, was going to repeat history.

His Holiness was charismatic, funny and humble, being especially loving towards a little boy and an old lady.

While someone else was talking, the great man tiptoed over to the lad and gave him a sweet.
Our meeting on June 13th was a lively social “Jubilee Celebration”.
The people there all had historical connections with Tibet. One girl was the grand-daughter of Mallory the lost Everest climber of the 1930s.
We quickly dispensed with the usual businesses, and Jean, our president informed us that we did so very well on our stall in the Jubilee Celebrations in the town that we had been able to purchase a new microphone and sound system!
The Dalai Lama gave a speech about compassion and then met us in small groups. Robert and I were first. I explained our connections and introduced Mr. Manning.
After a few hiccups this was put to the test when Suzanne read us her report on the National AGM which had been held this year at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
Thomas had taken gifts, including a bottle of lavendar water which his servant dropped. So I took a plastic bottle from

Diss Decorative & Fine Arts Society Mapping success. Diss DFAS concluded its current season of specialist lectures on a high note with a splendid presentation by Yasha Beresiner. This completed a record and very diverse year for the Society. Yasha Beresiner is a very accomplished raconteur and enthusiastic lecturer on the history and art of world maps, his witty repartee disguised a full and well illustrated history of maps from 3,000 BC - a stone engraved plan of the city of Nippur - to the 1931 Harry Beck London Underground plan. Remarkably similar guide maps! His audience of almost 100 members switched between bursts of laughter at his anecdotes and admiration of the array of artistic examples of the development of beautiful - and very accurate - medieval maps together with the stories of their compilers. In particular we saw the great maps of Ortelius and Saxton from the 16th
Century, John Speed’s practical county maps of the 1600’s and other East Anglian publications up to the Travellers’ Companions by John Cary of the 1780’s. As a special treat the last section of the very entertaining presentation concentrated on the 1637 Manorial Map of Diss. Diss DFAS was an important element in conserving this important record and producing an excellent publication, explaining its history and significance for the town. The sheepskin original is now in the Norfolk Archive and the book of its detail is available in Diss Museum,

Next season starts on Tuesday, 18th September and should prove equally comprehensive. The first lecture is by Valerie Woodgate on the Pre-
Raphaelite Brotherhood and will be an important preparation for the exhibition at the Tate in the autumn. For details visit: www.dissdfas.org.uk As always, potential members are very welcome to come and experience the quality of the events for themselves as our guests.

At our June meeting Frances Hart gave a most interesting presentation on the history of canals.
Enjoy a Magical Mad Hatters Tea Party.
She spoke about how the first canal was built by Francis Egerton, the third Duke of Bridgewater to transport coal from his mines at Worsley to the industrial areas of Manchester in 1761. Various engineers such as Thomas Telford then built them all over the country to carry manufactured goods to market. The rise and decline of the canals was traced, bringing their history up-to-date with the formation of groups to revitalise them for commercial and leisure use. For the family historian there was information to be found about canal families in the census returns, but exact numbers of children were not always disclosed.
The Gloucester Waterways Museum holds archives of British Waterways and the early canal companies, which trace the history of Britain’s inland waterways back to its very roots in the 17th century. Frances mentioned that the church at Stoke Bruerne in Northamptonshire was where many canal families were married, had their children baptised and were buried. The speaker for our meeting on 10th July wil be Mike Wabe, “Life in a Victorian Gaol” and on 14th August Dr Simon Pawley “Settlement & the Poor Law”. All meetings are at Diss Methodist Church at 7pm and everyone is welcome.
1st Roydon Rainbows and 2nd Eye Rainbows joined around twenty other groups of Rainbows for a special girl-only Mad Hatters Tea Party on Sunday 8th July. The group of five - to - seven-year-old girls and their Leader travelled from Roydon and Eye for the celebration at Hautbois activity centre near Norwich. Part of the wacky fun involved making their own Alice looking glasses and White Rabbit Stop watches and learning to dance the Quadrille. The girls enjoyed a Magic Key challenge and a special Cheshire Cat themed low ropes course. After a spectacular tea complete with Eat Me Cupcakes, they followed the White Rabbit to a magic show in the Enchanted Garden.

It was a magical afternoon of escapism and the girls really got into character.” Event organiser, Elaine Shields, said “This was an excellent way for the girls to come together and meet other Rainbows from around the region. The girls went through the ‘Looking Glass’ into a Wonderland of escapism and adventure. There was fun, adventure and new experiences for everyone; it’s so great to see girls sharing such experiences with their friends both old and new. A day to remember that will hopefully become a building block for their future”.

During her talk she drew a number of comical sketches illustrating some of the hazards that she had encountered along the way, attracting the unwanted attention and curiosity of both humans and animals.
Amongst every group of wouldbe Turners and Constables Judith confessed that there is always one character, one person more possessed of artistic temperament than artistic talent and although these students may not be best remembered for their artwork they do provide a rich source of amusing stories and anecdotes.
Judith also runs a series of art courses with the Norfolk landscape providing an everchanging vista for those wishing to discover the joy of painting.
The next meeting of Diss U3A will be on 2nd August at Diss United Reformed Church at 10.30am.

At the July meeting a very entertaining talk was given by Mr Pip Wright, the well-known local historian on the somewhat gruesome subject of “the Plague in East Anglia”.
Watch out if you have not declared all your income to the inland Revenue!, so says Mark Wallace of Stacey& Partners.
However, Mr Wright managed to inject a fair amount of humour into the subject although it was anything but humorous to the local population of the time. This scourge of Europe in the 13th to 17th centuries was probably brought in by the black rat and the vast quantities of piece goods (cloth etc.) being traded across the Channel which were infested with the fever carrying flea, and the infection resulted in hundreds of deaths. Outbreaks were irregular and limited in most cases to the growing towns and crowded populations in small houses and hovels. The wealthy were able to make their escape into the countryside and many of the public officials followed this disgraceful course leaving their poorer neighbours to struggle with the disaster. Towns were closed off and the inhabitants had often to rely on charitable villagers from the surrounding area bringing food to the edge of the town where it was collected and (hopefully) distributed to those in most need. There were no known cures but various nostrums such as
soaking coins in vinegar and masking against the “bad air” were the only defence. The last case known - following the gradual demise of the black rat- was in the 19th century and happily bubonic plague is no longer found anywhere in the world. Mrs Rowe gave a vote of thanks for an interesting talk. The committee reported on the Jubilee events which had raised £130.00. News was received from Ghorakpur about our protege there who is doing well at school but is described as rather “undisciplined” - what;s new about teenagers! There will be a visit to the garden at Furze House, Rushall by invitation of Mr & Mrs Greenacre on Wednesday 12th September with members of the Hoxne Garden Club. Cost £5 with buffet refreshments. Proceeds to Save the Children. After the tea break and the raffle Mrs Rowe closed the meeting.

not completed tax returns for a number of years the opportunity to being their tax affairs up to date.
HMRC expects to claw back £23m from taxi firms, market sellers and other tax-dodging self-employed traders as it rolls out another batch of niche taskforces.
DO not think you can escape - one recent tax payer found that the Inland Revenue found out about his undeclared income by looking at his Facebook and Twitter account, another from information received from the overseas bank.
London’s indoor and outdoor markets, taxi firms in Yorkshire and East Midlands, East Anglia, London, Yorkshire and North East property rentals as well as tax-dodging restaurant owners in the Midlands will each have a designated task force targeted in its direction. If you are not currently declaring income to HMRC you have warned and should come clean! They are offering good terms to tax payers who have not been declaring their income! Your questions answered‌‌ Question: I am helping out with organising an event in my local village. We are worried that if there is an accident we may be sued for compensation. Can we put up notices to say that we will not be liable for any accidents? Answer: Although such notices are frequently seen, they have no effect in law. This is because under the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977, you cannot exclude liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence. The organisers of an event will not automatically be liable for an accident as a compensation claim can only successfully be pursued if there is considered to be some legal liability for the cause of the accident. The person that has been injured will need to prove that the accident has been caused by the negligence (or breach of some other legal duty) of someone else.
August 2012
The event should obviously be organised so as to consider all of the various risks and to put in place measures to reduce those risks and to seek to prevent an accident from occurring. Public liability insurance cover should however be taken out to cover the event. The insurance company will then deal with any claim for compensation that may be made following an accident, both in terms of handling the claim and also in terms of paying compensation if there was considered to be legal liability for the accident. You should also make sure that any businesses etc taking part in the event have their own public liability insurance cover. Does Holiday Sickness Now Have A Whole New Meaning? Employees have a statutory right to 28 days’ holiday per year (inclusive of public holidays). Holiday entitlement is set out in the Working Time Regulations 1998 which were enacted to give force to the Working Time Directive. The Regulations therefore give force to European Union legislation and it is important to note that they were seen as a health and safety measure. In 2009 the ECJ decided that if an employee falls ill before a period of booked annual leave commences, then the absence from work is sickness absence and not holiday. The employee is therefore entitled to take that period of annual leave at a later date. But what if an employee starts prearranged annual leave and falls ill during that period? The ECJ has now given us the answer and it is certainly employee-friendly! It was decided that where an employee falls sick during scheduled annual leave, that employee
will be able to reschedule the annual leave at a later date. The difficulty in the latest decision lies with the employer. An employer will be entitled to ask for evidence to support the claim that the employee was ill. If that evidence cannot be produced then the employee will be in some difficulties. This may also affect entitlement to sick pay. Furthermore, it is arguably not sufficient simply to be ill, instead the employee will have to show that he was unfit to work. In order to try to prevent abuse, employers should have a clear policy for both sickness absence and annual leave with guidance for employees. However, the whole situation now puts an entirely new slant on holiday illnesses.

Talented art students at Diss High School have received important support from the local Fine Arts Society and this continuing encouragement will assist the best works in regional and national competitions. Diss Decorative & Fine Arts Society [DDFAS] is dedicated to supporting young artists in the area through its “Young Arts” programme – an important part of its charitable purposes mandate. A key part of this is recognising local artistic flair which can gain exposure through the National Society’s Young Artist of the Year competition. The varied and very skilled work of the Sixth Form Arts Students at Diss High School has so impressed DDFAS that they have sponsored the group with a grant of £250.00 - a most welcome contribution to the costs of key materials to complete some of the projects.

Attleborough Town Council Noticeboard August 2012. Local Grants Scheme The Town Council’s grants scheme ensures that local organisations seeking funding for community projects in Attleborough can potentially apply for a financial contribution from the Council. There is a pot of money set aside for local grants and an upper limit of £250 per application applies per applicant. Full details of the application process are detailed on the Council’s website. The scheme commenced in May 2012 and to date three applicants have been awarded funding. Cemetery Security It has sadly come to light recently that instances of unauthorised removal of grave ornaments at Attleborough cemetery in Queens Road have occurred. The Council requests that visitors to the cemetery be vigilant and report any
potential loss of grave ornaments to the police (non-emergency telephone number 111) as a possible theft. On a trial basis the Council has decided that the vehicular gates to the cemetery be locked between 4pm and 8.30am and will continue to keep cemetery security under review. Tourist Information Centre The town’s TIC is located on the ground floor of the Town Hall right in the heart of the town centre. It provides an information service to townsfolk and visitors alike, giving details of local and regional attractions and also acting as a point of contact to book transport under the community car scheme.

Mayoral Engagements
In this electronic age it is increasingly important to have an online presence and in recognition of this the Council maintains its own website, which is regularly being updated and expanded as resources allow.
The Mayor, Cllr Sam Taylor, had a busy schedule of engagements in June, attending a total of 31 functions and highlighted by attending the High School on the 22nd and 23rd of June for the prom and torch relay staged by Breckland Council.
A whole host of information can be accessed including contact details for councillors, meeting papers, the latest local news, booking of the town hall for events and even a webcam affording a snapshot view of Queens Square. Click on: http://attleboroughtc.norfolkparishes.gov. uk/ to visit our homepage.
The Mayor commented “It was lovely to see all the children dressed in their best for the evening and the children from the local sports clubs joining in for the torch relay and displays of their skills, and the school staff and pupils worked really hard to stage a wonderful weekend”.
The Council is presently reviewing the service provided by the TIC - which is staffed entirely by volunteers - and further details of the anticipated re-vamp will be published in due course.

Attleborough Rainbows, Brownies And Guides On Saturday 30th June, Rainbows, Brownies and Guides from Attleborough, East Harling and the surrounding areas joined together for a sports event. As this year is the London Olympics, there were 5 bases and five teams. Each base represented a colour from the Olympic rings and each team was a different continent from around the world.
end of the afternoon, there was time for a short presentation with medals for all participants. Many thanks to all who made the afternoon a success.
For more information on getting involved with Girlguiding, please contact Kathryn Donald on 01953 456525 or email: sunflowerjones@hotmail.com.
On arrival, the girls produced a fantastic flag to parade as they walked between each activity. Leaders from different groups organised the activities at each base - luckily the sun came out and we were able to make the most of the outdoors. At the red base was benchball, at the black base it was parachute games, at the yellow base it was games combining skill and agility with skipping, beanbag balancing & target throwing. For the blue base, there was a variety of races and the green base was a water relay. At the
A Donation That Packs A Punch The Wymondham branch of Norwich & Peterborough are fighting to help get young people exercising by making a £250 donation to Attleborough Amateur Boxing Club for new equipment. The branch have made a donation to the local sports club that welcomes children from the age of eight upwards who are looking to train in safe surroundings under the tutelage of trained boxing teachers. The new equipment bought with the donation will be available to be used by both boys and girls of all ages who use the club to get fit, train for competitions and have fun at the same time. “We are proud to be able to make this donation to one of our local sporting clubs,” said Jenny Didcott the manager of the N&P’s Wymondham branch. “Attleborough Boxing Club is a fantastic facility that provides a great place for young people to come together and work on their fitness and indulge in a sport they enjoy under brilliant guidance from
qualified teachers and instructors and we are pleased we could show our support.” Peter Neal of Attleborough Amateur Boxing Club said: “We’re really grateful to N&P for this donation. We want to make sure we can offer local children a great place to train with some of the best equipment so they can get the most out of the time they spent here and thanks to this donation we can continue to do just that.” The £250 donation to Attleborough Boxing Club came from the Yorkshire Building Society Community Investment Fund, a smaller fund set up by the Society to help local charities and good causes that can often be overlooked for donations. N&P merged with Yorkshire Building Society in 2011 giving N&P the opportunity to support more good causes.

Competition winners.
It could affect you!
There was great excitement at both Attleborough Infant and Junior Schools last week when head gardener of Peter Beales Roses, Vaughn Limmer visited them to announce the winners of the drawing competitions that were created for the 2nd Peter Beales Rose Festival on 23rd and 24th June, in conjunction with the schools. Vaughn, a successful artist himself, judged the pictures with MD Richard Beales and found the entries
extremely hard to judge as the standard was so high and there was the use of different mediums.
Yes there is some new legalisation that is being introduced that could affect most employers.
Three prizes for each school were awarded and consisted of artist pads and drawing materials, to hopefully encourage the winners to continue their drawings.
If you employ part or full time staff the new pension regulations, the Government’s auto enrolment scheme, may mean that you may have to pay into a pension for them.
Thanks go to the teachers for their support in organising and of course to the children of the schools for all their achievements whether winners or not.
The regulations are being introduced from 2012 to 2017 and it will be compulsory for certain employees to be offered this scheme. Whether an employee qualifies will depend upon their age and their income. The legalisation is extremely complicated and will have an impact on millions of employees and indirectly employers, as employers will have to pay into their employee’s pensions. There are significant fines if the legalisation is ignored and the fines can be levied on an ongoing basis, so please be aware. The new scheme is not like the old Stakeholder Scheme, where once you registered you could
choose to ignore it! Auto Enrolment will have far reaching ramifications! This article is not written on the basis of providing advice but to make you aware, whether you are an employee or employer, that it is coming and could affect you. For employers with a large number of employees it has already started. Please speak to us and we can personally advise you of the implications. Any initial discussion would be at our expense. With All The Recent Rain Look Up And Check Whether Your Gutters Are Overflowing The most common problem is a build up of moss and leaves and general sludge in the gutter. A simple remedy to this is to have us clear, clean and inspect then for you as leaky gutters may seem a minor problem but if left unattended they can have a major impact on your home. Which in turn could lead to costly repairs and time consuming maintenance. It doesn’t really matter what type of roof you have, whether it is flat or sloped, it is crucial that the guttering system allows water to drain down and away from the structure. Pooling water on the roof can cause tiles to be lifted and warped which results in leaks creeping down into the structure itself. From there, not only will the soffit become damaged, but so too will the framework within the building. In effect, guttering is an integral part of any roofing system because it directs water
August 2012
away from the building to a collection point where it can cause no harm. One of the most obvious problems you will notice with leaky guttering is that the soil around your home will become eroded. As water spills out through leaks in the gutter, it splashes against the ground causing that erosion. This is a danger on a number of levels, but most importantly it can cause damage to the very foundation of the building. You would also want to keep in mind that the pools of water and mud around your home do nothing for the aesthetics of your property If the gutters are clean and clear but still overflowing, it is possible to fix them.
One possible cause is that the downpipes might be clogged with wads of leaves and general debris flushed down from the gutters. If clogged downpipes are found we can clean and unblock them - replacement is only necessary if the blockage and water pressure has damaged the downpipes. A second possible cause is that the gutters are not sloped properly so that water flows readily through the gutters to the downpipes. We check and correct improper slope for you to achieve a good flow of water. It could also be that there are not enough downpipes or they are not well located. It is sometimes necessary to have downpipes at intervals along a long run of gutter, as well as at the end.
Another possible cause is that the gutters and/or downpipes are undersized. Deep flow gutters are available the high flow rate and deep capacity enable the amount of downpipes to be kept to a minimum. Protecting Your Home From Insects The number of insects seems to increase noticeably during the summer months, this is likely to be because their entire eco system performs more efficiently in the hot weather - the plants that certain bugs may eat will have a better chance of surviving with the extra sunlight and the lack of cold weather will mean less insects dying naturally. Whatever the reason, most of us don’t approve of the additional insects finding their way to, and settling down in our homes. Despite this, we seldom think about preventing it any further than putting up fly papers and plugging in bug lamps. However, it is possible to reduce the amount of insects living in your home and prevent quite so many coming in in the future. Firstly, you want to stop advertising your home to potential future creatures. Any

when light will attract insects in. You final step should be to actively deter insects from coming into your home.
You also want to make an effort maintain food hygiene, any traces of forgotten food will become a feeding ground for insects - down the sides of cupboards and behind ovens and fridges are the worst offending places.
There are two possible routes for you to go down, if you’re not concerned about humanity then just apply insecticide around the areas of your home bugs could find their way in, insecticides and
Your second step should be finding the possible entrances for insects into your home - this is really any gap of around a quarter of an inch - then use some form of sealant to block them up, mastic or filler etc. The same goes for any cracks in concrete or brickwork, spaces around windows, door frames etc. A more simple method is to make sure windows and doors are left closed, especially after dark
even products like spider-repellent are available fairly cheaply. The humane alternative is to implement cultural repellents, these are methods like keeping pot plants away from windows and doors, trimming trees and hedges so they don’t overhang you home, storing firewood outside, cleaning up leaf litter, stones and other plant debris to expose any potential hiding places.

28 AN INTERVIEW WITH...
www.DispatchMagazine.co.uk
Interview With.... Sharna Banham Of Zig Zag Hair, Beauty & Wellbeing Who would benefit from using this treatment?
Above: Sharna Banham
Anyone who has general aches and pains, but I know the system has been praised by people who have fibromyalgia, polymyalgia rheumatica, rheumatism, lupus, thoracic syndrome, sclerosis the spine, muscle atrophy, frozen shoulder, back pain, sciatica, ligament damage, calf strain, sleep disorders, stress and poor circulation. It’s pretty amazing to read the testimonials. What benefits would they get?
What inspired you to have the Aquaneuro wet system in the salon? We were looking to expand our wellbeing services at the salon and I had previously tried the system to see if it would help me, as I am a sufferer of Lupus and experience aches and pains in my joints. I was personally impressed with the results and wanted to share my experience with others.
People who suffer from pain normally notice an instant result. But one of my clients who has no issues just feel really chilled and relaxed after the treatment, they say it’s like having a day at the spa. In summary it extends flexibility, improves circulation and increases overall mobility. It is a feeling unlike any other spa product on the market today.
Tell us how the system works? During a treatment you just sit in a shallow pool of warm water in what looks like a Jacuzzi type bath. Packets of energy are then distributed via sound waves that seek out the receptor nerves to stimulate and contract your muscles. You can immediately feel the technology working and actually see your muscles contracting.
How much does the treatment cost? The cost of a session is £40, of course if you mention Dispatch magazine you can get 10% off up until the end of August. We also do bundles where clients can receive up to 20% off. Do I need any specific clothing?
The system combines this leading technology with water to allow access to deep tissue, not normally accessible by standard massage techniques, without damaging superficial tissue. This enables it to penetrate deep under the skin to increase circulation to the muscles and tissues for a totally rejuvenated feeling. How long does the treatment take? Each client has 30 minutes in the system, we allocate 1 hour allowing time for people to change.
August 2012
The treatment takes place in a private room.
You just need to bring swimwear and a towel. Can everyone use the system? There are some contraindications. People with a pacemaker or an implanted hearing aid, had a stroke or epileptic fit in the last 6 months, currently being treated for cancer, expectant mothers or having IVF or sufferers of heart disease can not use the system. Oh and the minimum age is 5.

This is fantastic for someone like me, being able to not even think about food for the day, just pick it up and take it, set myself meal times and stick to it, actually having structure to my food and actually start to look forward to eating again.
Mr Missankov and his staff have been working for months to get the practice up and running. All the hard work has resulted in a modern and inviting new environment with a large reception, waiting area and 2 new surgeries.
Please feel free to contact our friendly reception staff if you wish to know more about our services.
After spending 3 weeks on the diet so far, I have found the variety of food to be very tasty and very filling.
The practice will continue to offer a varied range of excellent patient orientated dental services.

Waist 42” Hips 49” After putting on 5st during my pregnancy and going from a dress size 10/12 to a dress size of 16 and 10 months on still having to fit into my maternity clothes was beginning to get me very down. After a few different diets and the usual trying to eat healthily, I found I just didn’t have the time to prepare my meals. What with having to feed the baby, dogs and boyfriend this meant I usually grabbed something quick, easy and very, very unhealthy for me. Being a busy mum and working full time left no real room for going up the gym or going for a swim and to be honest I felt a little silly running with a pushchair. So I thought enough was enough, I’d seen the adverts for Jenny Craig on the TV but didn’t really know much about it. After some research I contacted the team, read some success stories and was put in touch with my consultant Rebecca. My food was delivered to the door in two boxes, as I opened them and looked at the variety of products I actually thought they all sound pretty good. Rebecca calls me each week to offer tips and advice, talk you through any problems or answer any

SOCIAL MEDIA 31
10 Tips For Good Use Of Social Media The social media community is constantly growing and if you’re looking to tap into it and gain more interest into your business then it’s important to maintain good social media etiquette. Here are ten tips for good social media management: 1. Respond to clients You’ve got to be doing more than simply posting your own updates, it’s of the utmost importance that any questions or queries that are posted are replied to. You don’t want your clients to feel ignored, nor do you want your Facebook page, website etc to seem dormant and unmaintained. 2. Shout-outs and gratitude If somebody gives you some form of promotional attention or positive feedback, such as a ‘retweet’ on Twitter, be sure to thank them for it. 3. Qualified and experienced opinions The people within your business who are most qualified and experienced should be involved with management of your social media, they are after all, going to be the most knowledgeable on the subject.
4. Maintain your content To a potential client who hasn’t visited your shop, office, etc, the only impression they’ll have of your business will come from your online material. Poorly maintained, out of date content is only going to give you a negative image.
7. Tread carefully around humour Humour is arguably a powerful marketing technique, but it’s also subjective and varies person to person. Before you start making jokes be aware of your market and how they may approach it.
10. Networking with other businesses Converging with other businesses online is easy and beneficial to both parties, it also gives the impression you’re not occupied with only yourself and gives a friendly business image to any potential clients.
5. Network your social media If you use more than one social media platform, it’s important to keep them synchronised.
8. Use your ingenuity See how other businesses go about maintaining their online presence and try and implement the methods that work. Be sure to use whatever new features your chosen platform/ platforms may have, for example mobile web, photo and video.
Come along then, join the World of Social Media follow us at: @Dispatch_Mag we will re-Tweet your tweets to our massive following, and it’s a great way of attracting new business.
For example, if you’re uploading content to Website then make sure your Facebook profile is aware of it - you don’t want to have contradictory material and you don’t want one platform to seem ahead of the others. 6. Start with good content If you’re launching on a new platform you want to have a strong start, you don’t want the first people to stumble across your business to have a poor first impression. Bio: I have a wicked little shop in deep norfolk very shabby chic styles fab wicker basket wear, textiles, bunting, etc.

9. Informal Business Mix business-related content with less formal content, people will lose interest if bombarded with work related updates and posts. For example, allow your followers behind the scenes occasionally, showing them a little more than they’d ordinarily see will improve your client relationships.

New Routes And More Choice For Sun Seekers From Norwich International Airport Thomson and First Choice are pleased to announce that for Summer 2013 they will be doubling capacity at Norwich International Airport through the introduction of three brand new routes to Dalaman in Turkey, Enfidha in Tunisia and Tenerife - as well as the addition of another weekly flight for existing route Palma. The move to introduce these routes is part of the UK’s largest tour operator’s strategy to ensure customers across the UK can fly from their local airport and stay at the best hotels in some of the most exciting destinations. Not only will customers from East Anglia now be able to visit new destinations, they will also have the opportunity to choose varying durations - not just the standard seven and 14 night stays. The changes also mean that Thomson and First Choice customers will now be able to fly to Palma and sail on the Thomson Dream cruise ship visiting a number of ports across the Mediterranean. An increase in capacity on the existing Norwich to Corfu route will also see a further 50 seats a week available to local customers. Local Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire customers will now have
access to some of Thomson and First Choice’s most highly scoring flagship hotels including; the five star Sensatori Tenerife, which gives customers a luxury holiday experience, featuring world class spas and gourmet dining; and the Holiday Village Tunisia which delivers everything a family could want in one place – great entertainment, food, kids clubs and lots of activities to keep the whole family occupied.
an enhanced holiday experience for our customers.” Andrew Bell, the airport’s Chief Executive, said: “We are delighted that Thomson and First Choice have announced these fantastic new destinations and increased the frequency on two of our most popular holiday flights. This decision demonstrates their commitment to the airport and reflects the high level of demand from customers
wishing to fly from Norwich. “An easy, hassle free start to a holiday cannot be under estimated. With short journey times to the airport compared to London airports, on-site secure car parking next to the terminal, a friendly welcome when you arrive, efficient check-in and security procedures and no endless corridors to navigate with your bags, Norwich International Airport puts some of the pleasure back into flying.”
Paul Cooper, Airport Negotiations Manager for Thomson and First Choice, said of the move: “Doubling capacity demonstrates our continued commitment to the region and Norwich International Airport, which has always been a popular departure point for our customers. The increase in capacity comes as a direct result of customer feedback - our customers want to fly from their local airport. “Modernising our operations across the UK is a key part of our overall strategy and this move is definitely a step in the right direction towards creating

Vauxhall Insignia BiTurbo SRi Sports Tourer By Tim Barnes-Clay Twitter: @carwriteups Visit: www.carwriteups.co.uk. THERE ARE many things I like about this car and just a couple of tiny things I don’t. Let’s get the grumbles out of the way first.
in its most commanding diesel engine ever. It produces 192 bhp and 295 lb/ft of torque, and yet CO2 emissions are only 134 g/km.
The Vauxhall Insignia needs better wing mirrors. They’re just too small and narrow to give you a confident view - especially when changing lanes on motorways. The other small niggle is the steering wheel. It’s big enough to belong in a bus. But these minor issues are eclipsed by the motor’s merits.
The heady, twin-sequential turbocharged oil-burner is based on the existing 1956 cc unit that powers key models in the Insignia, Astra and Zafira Tourer range. However, in BiTurbo form it delivers an extra 34.5 bhp and a significant 37 lb/ft of further ‘get-up-and-go’. The result for the Sports Tourer is 0-60 mph in 8.4 seconds. It’s the sort of acceleration that gives you that perceptible ‘pulled back into your seat’ feeling.
For a start, the Insignia is a good looking estate (Sports Tourer in today’s parlance). It comes loaded with equipment; it’s practical; it’s comfortable, and it’s satisfying to drive. But the model on test here - the BiTurbo SRi Sports Tourer - is not just the usual griffin labelled, load-lugging, mile-muncher. Why? Because under the bonnet, Vauxhall has shoehorned
Complementing this power gain, Vauxhall’s FlexRide adaptive damping is standard on all Insignia BiTurbos (normally a £790 option on front-wheel drive models). The system can ‘learn’ how you drive the car and adapts
the dampers accordingly. You can also select Tour and Sport buttons, and configure the throttle, steering and damper settings in Sport mode separately. The result is a car which is more rewarding to drive than many other large turbo diesel motors on the market. In Sport mode it’s taut, quick, and it takes corners on rails. In Tour mode it’s a gracious and unflappable vehicle, and one which will give you a magic carpet ride to work. In normal mode, it’s simply a good estate car with poke.
PROS • Powerful • Comfortable • Economical • Good-looking • Practical CONS
Unsurprisingly, the Sports Tourer has a big area for loading, and cleverly, under the powered tailgate (which incorporates the rear light clusters), there is an additional set of rear lights, making the car highly visible to other road users if you need to sort out your luggage after the sun has gone down. Finally, thanks to a package of eco features – including standard Start/ Stop across the range – the Insignia BiTurbo Sports Tourer manages to achieve a combined 55.4 mpg. This is the last piece of the jigsaw to make the car a great all-rounder. It’s economical and spacious enough to be the main family car; its emissions are
August 2012
low enough to make it an affordable yet very smart business motor, and, of course, the potency of its engine will bring out the devil in you when you feel the need for speed.
• Small wing mirrors • Large steering wheel FAST FACTS • Max speed: 140 mph • 0-60 mph: 8.4 secs • Combined mpg: 55.4 • Engine: 1956 cc 4 cylinder 16 valve twin-turbo diesel • Max. power (bhp): 192 at 4000 rpm • Max. torque (lb/ft): 295 at 1750-2500 rpm • CO2: 134 g/km • Price: £28,615 on the road

automatically maintains a set time gap to the car in front; and Collision Warning and Auto Brake detects, alerts and automatically brakes if the car risks colliding with another vehicle in front.
The system is active at speeds between 20 and 50 km/h and with 75 per cent of all accidents involving pedestrians taking place at up to 40 km/h, the technology is set to save lives.

Volvo’s City Safety low-speed collision avoidance system, which now operates at speeds up to 31 mph (currently 19mph on other models), keeps an eye on traffic in front and automatically brakes if the driver fails to react in time when the vehicle in front slows down or stops - or if the car is approaching a stationary vehicle too fast.

What’s more, the fixed rate of interest at 0 per cent means the total amount payable is the same as the cash price for the car - £20,020*.
Other safety features also include Park Assist Pilot which makes parallel parking easy; Lane Keeping Aid helps the driver stay in the intended lane; Enhanced Blind Spot Information System monitors and alerts the driver to rapidly approaching vehicles and those in the blind spots on both sides of the car; Adaptive Cruise Control & Distance Alert
