‘September Splendour’
Moments in History was the Diss Carnival theme, a good one for the museum.
A fundraising event in aid of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices a flower arranging evening entitled ‘September Splendour’ will be taking place at Eye Community Centre on Monday 23rd September, featuring the very talented and popular Alan Smith from Ipswich. Alan has visited the centre on many previous occasions and has always attracted a large audience, his work is superb and his commentary
We saw Votes For Women, the Burston Strike School, the Six Wives of Henry VIII, Dunkirk and other imaginative entries. Each year since the carnival was revived I have led a walking group of friends to help promote the organisation. Getting anyone to come along is the hard part. For the past two years, when we had seven people, we came runners-up. But, when there are only four of us, it looks as though we have not gone to much trouble. I tried to devise a human version of the Bayeux Tapestry. Four figures - a lady, monk, Norman soldier and king - would each hold something showing part of the tapestry. So the lady had a frame, as though she was doing the embroidery. The monk had a Bible with a picture on it. The Norman soldier had a shield with a collage of illustrations, while the king had a pennant and pictures down his robe. This meant copying, enlarging and laminating pictures and sticking them on to the implements,

remembering that the weather can play havoc. I tried sticking images on a large flag; but it looked like bits of paper stuck to a flag, so I dumped it. Mere Players provided the lady’s costume, while I had to make four trips to Norwich for a Norman helmet and chainmail from the Maddermarket Theatre. Then I had to go around with the costumes, back again to check if some of them looked all right; and back again after the carnival to retrieve them. On the day there is a lot of hanging around before the start; and then a lengthy walk in the parade, which is what puts some people off taking part. But we had a good time. My thanks to Alison Dumbell (Norman Lady), George Utty (Norman Soldier) and Steve Glason (Monk) for joining me. Basil Abbott

The Eyes Have It As Norfolk Family Opticians Businesses Join Forces Two highly-regarded Norfolk family optician businesses have joined forces, with Dipple & Conway acquiring the Diss-based practice of A Stodel. Andrew and Judith Stodel’s optometry business was established in Diss more than 20 years ago. Dipple & Conway is owned by James, Damian and Robert Conway, the three grandsons of Thomas Conway, who co-founded the business in Norwich in 1916. Dipple & Conway also has a branch in Swaffham. James Conway said “Andrew and Judith Stodel will be staying on as consultants for at least a year, to ensure a seamless change for the Market Place business and a smooth transition for clients into the Dipple & Conway family”. The business name will also be retained for the time being. The purchase price of the business has not been disclosed. “It is a very exciting development for both businesses,” said Mr Conway. “Both firms are high-end Norfolk family eye-care businesses. We both pride ourselves on long-held reputations for quality of personal service.
“Our ethos and business models are so similar. Andrew and Judith are delighted clients they have looked after from the first days of their practice will carry on receiving the high degree of personal attention they have been used to. And Dipple & Conway are delighted to have acquired a firm of A Stodel’s reputation in an area which is also an excellent geographical fit with our existing operation.”

Among the specialised diagnostic equipment available at Dipple & Conway’s Castle Street, Norwich, practice is a 3-D retinal scanner, a Tear Lab which analyses and assesses a wide spectrum of dry-eye conditions and pre-screening machinery which assesses clients’ suitability for refractive procedures such as laser surgery.
Mr Conway said the move will enhance the expectations of their 10,000 new clients who will gain significant benefits from the move.
Dipple & Conway is also expanding the contact lens service available at Diss.
“Clients from South Norfolk and north Suffolk now have a hugely-expanded bank of expertise to call on. Dipple & Conway employs 10 eye-care professionals with a wide range of specialist knowledge,” he said.
“A Stodel is already well-known for its high quality clinical care. Andrew is a greatly experienced and expert clinician with a wonderful reputation, especially for his work with glaucoma and cataracts. Many of the firm’s clients come by referrals from other health professionals,” said Mr Conway.
In Norwich, A Stodel clients now have access to a wide range of cutting-edge

Newman & Co HMRC Targets Second Home Owners. HMRC have launched the Property Sales Campaign that encourages taxpayers that have sold a second property but have not declared the capital gains tax to volunteer this information to HMRC by 9th August 2013. This can be done by email, mail or telephone. An arrangement to pay the outstanding tax must then be made by 6th September 2013. After that date, HMRC will begin contacting taxpayers that they consider may have undeclared capital gains tax on the sale of their second properties and levy the tax, interest and penalties due. Penalties that arise for not declaring the tax due within the normal time limits will be reduced if taxpayers take advantage of HMRC’s campaign.

If you are in receipt of a form P800, it is important that all the details on the form be checked against your own records to ensure that HMRC have used the correct information. Estimates are often used in HMRC calculations from figures that may be out of date and irrelevant, resulting in incorrect tax codes being issued and tax deducted incorrectly. Diss Decorative & Fine Arts Society See Naples and Die! More than 40 members of Diss DFAS joined two other societies, one from the Home Counties and one from the West Midlands, to visit the highly acclaimed “Life & Death in Pompeii and Herculaneum” exhibition at the British Museum in June. After Reception and Coffee in the Ford centre, the real treat was a wonderful talk by the exhibition curator, Dr Paul Roberts. Paul is a popular favourite with the Diss Society and gave an excellent lecture on Rome and Athens in 2011. Despite only arriving home from Italy at 4.30 that morning because of air traffic control strikes, he was as crisp and entertaining as ever and - being on his home ground - very clear as to the strategy and planning for this exhibition which features many objects from the cities buried in the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD that have never previously been outside Italy. His strong relationship with the Archaeological Superintendency of Naples & Pompeii and his well
respected expertise certainly contributed to this unique experience which will be the last held in the old British Museum reading room hall before it reverts to its former style. The exhibition is world class with stunning displays enhanced by cunning use of light to give the real feel of a Roman home and the rapid impact of those dreadful few hours that turned the thriving communities into death and destruction nearly 2000 years ago. The Diss visitors were unanimous in their praise for Paul Roberts’ work and the brilliant British Museum exhibition which they would recommend you should see. Diss Decorative & Fine Arts Society’s 2013 / 2014 season commences with the first of 10 monthly lectures on September 17th. at Royden Village Hall. Diss Town Team ...is a group of volunteers working quietly behind the scenes to help improve the town. When a shop closes or an area is neglected, anybody can predict doom and gloom. The Town Team is working to establish the facts about the town centre, including what can be improved but most importantly, what is already great about it. Once they have a clear picture of what is unique about Diss and what special attributes are in the town centre, the Town Team’s job will be to make sure Diss develops a bold and memorable reputation which will attract people who will visit more places, more often. The Team’s vision for Diss is to: 1. Breath economic and community life back into Diss, starting with the town centre; 2. To see our streets bustling with people, services and jobs; a vibrant place that people choose to visit; and 3. To make Diss a destination The Team’s objectives are to make Diss desirable, easy to find, easy to use and talked about, focusing on six sectors: 1.Arts 2.Food 3.Heritage 4.Nature 5.Shopping 6.Streets The team members are realistic and donít envisage they will achieve their goal overnight. They know there are obstacles, but they are determined.
The team is currently taking the guesswork out of their task. They are working with Sue Dougal, a local Retail Specialist, and Action for Market Towns (AMT). AMT has worked in over 160 towns to investigate factors such as the type and quality of shops within the town centre, the number of people visiting and when, the car parking facilities, the impact of signage, how confident business people feel, where shoppers and visitors come from and what they do when they visit, and the views of local people.

everybody updated and gather the views of local people.
A number of projects are planned to attract more people to the town centre, to improve some of the issues that might hold us back and to make sure local residents, workers and traders benefit. These include marketing campaigns, incentives for shoppers and visitors and business support for venues, attractions and traders.
Meet the Team
The Town Team is not working in isolation. Other projects such as the Diss Heritage Triangle, developments on the Mere and the local authorities are all working together to make the most of available resources, to avoid duplication and to have the biggest impact. A number of individuals, businesses and organisations, have pledged their support and are already taking action. Local magazines and newspapers have promised to keep

Jackamans Secures Law Society’s New Quality Mark Jackamans in Suffolk and Norfolk has secured membership to the Law Society’s Conveyancing Quality Scheme - the mark of excellence for the home buying process. Jackamans underwent rigorous assessment by the Law Society in order to secure CQS status, which marks the firm out as meeting high standards in the residential conveyancing process. Law Society President Lucy ScottMoncrieff said that the Law Society introduced CQS to promote high standards in the home buying process. “CQS has established itself as the quality mark of the home-buying sector and enables consumers to identify practices that provide a quality residential conveyancing service. With so many different conveyancing service providers out there CQS helps home-buyers and sellers seek out those that can provide a safe and efficient level of service.” Paul McGrath (Managing Partner) says: “Jackamans is delighted to have secured CQS status. Buying and selling
a home can be a stressful time. Choosing a solicitor to help in that process just became easier. By looking for a CQS firm like Jackamans the public can seek out a firm that has proved its commitment to quality. “The overall beneficiaries will be clients who use Jackamans when buying a home. They will receive a reliable, efficient service as recognised by the CQS standard.” The scheme requires practices to undergo a strict assessment, compulsory training, self reporting, random audits and annual reviews in order to maintain CQS status. It is open only to members of the Law Society who meet the demanding standards set by the scheme and has the support of the Council of Mortgage Lenders, the Building Societies Association, Legal Ombudsman and the Association of British Insurers.

Window Geeks “Replacing your steamed-up windows doesn’t mean you have to replace the whole window…Save thousands by changing only the glass”… It can be stressful when things break or go wrong, especially when it seems the only solution comes at great expense. Unexpected bills can hit households very hard at a time when every penny counts and it means that thousands of homeowners put off fixing their windows or doors for fear of the high costs usually associated with these types of products... Well now you can relax…because WindowGeeks, a national window, door and conservatory repair specialist, has expanded into Norwich and will service the whole of the Norfolk region, giving local home owners access to real money-saving options; one that can reduce what could be an alarming bill in the thousands to a far more acceptable one in the low hundreds - and in most cases even lower than that. The fact is that the average single repair or replacement undertaken by WindowGeeks, which includes locks, handles and hinges, as well as the usual replacement of steamed-up double glazed units is less
August 2013
than £60...not surprising really when you consider that the replacement of a single steamed-up double glazed window starts from as low as £30 including VAT and fitting…which is why, at this point, many people take the opportunity to upgrade to energy efficient double glazed units. Our new local and experienced team, headed up by Steve Olley, join all of our other skilled craftsmen and women throughout the UK, each providing a professional and cost effective service to 1,000s of customers from Plymouth in the Southwest, through Norwich in the East, up to Preston in the North and all points in-between… “Lots of people have problems with their windows,” says Steve, “They get steamed-up and won’t clear, or the locks stick or the handles get loose…and it becomes even more of a problem at this time of year when cold draughts get through...but what’s really surprising is that most people don’t realise that all of these problems can be fixed quickly and without spending a fortune or having to
sell one or more of their children, unless they want to of course”… WindowGeeks has over 38 years’ experience in the glazing industry and it’s sad to think that there are still quite a few traditional window companies that either refuse or just don’t want to carryout repairs…now were not saying that all double glazing companies don’t carry out repairs, many do, and do a great job, but Steve adds, “In most cases they’re not really interested in the smaller jobs and that’s what’s so great about WindowGeeks, we offer a real cost-effective solution, which makes it a very easy decision for our customers to choose us...there’s no pressure sales from us because there’s no viable alternative, unless, that is, you want to spend 10, 20 or even 100 times more on replacing all your double glazing!” While the cost savings might be the biggest draw, there’s another reason customers should choose WindowGeeks and one that has inevitably convinced many customers throughout the UK to use us;
“It’s all about honesty and trust,” says Steve. “There’s integrity in what WindowGeeks do and that’s very important to me, we tell the truth, only charge for what needs doing and we always honour our promises…We run a very successful and ethical business based on good old fashioned customer service backed up with top quality products and support from our head office.” WindowGeeks provides free quotations with; • No call out charges • No credit card charges • No deposits • No minimum order values, • No high pressure sales men or women • No hidden extras • 10 year guarantee on all glazed products All our quotes include VAT and Fitting Call now for a FREE QUOTE on 0800 61 22 943 or visit us at www.windowgeeks.co.uk

Clearing Out - A Positive Step To Moving On After a funeral, going through your loved ones belongings and trying to decide what do with the items presents a significant challenge and is by far one of the hardest parts of the journey through bereavement. There are cupboards, drawers and wardrobes to tackle, as well as the garage, the loft and the pile of papers that may have accumulated since the death occurred. With the longer days of summer upon us, it might be the right time to start tackling some of these tasks. For many, it is so overwhelming that it is easier to just leave everything as is, for others it is the sad realisation that their loved one is not returning and that with the exception of specific items that may have been itemised in the will, their possessions are now yours.
items to keep and which need to be donated to charity shops or discarded. Some people are forced by circumstances to carry out these tasks quickly whilst for others; an immediate reaction to bereavement can be to quickly clean out everything. The thought behind this approach is that you will feel better if you do not see the personal belongings. The real truth is that most will not feel better; in fact as time passes, some may regret clearing out and giving away the items so quickly.
There is no right or wrong time to do this, but once probate or letters of administration have been granted, it is a personal decision of what works best for you.
The best way to get started is to tackle one corner, one drawer or one file at a time. Create four piles; the save pile, the donation pile, the rubbish pile and the “not-sure what I want to do with” pile.
Some people do find that it helps to take time, to hold things, to recall and savour memories and decide which
Once you start, you will find that you will develop both satisfaction in accomplishing the task and

fond memories reminiscing. If it is overwhelming, take a few items to a different room and go through them at your leisure. Consider family members and friends who may enjoy a special item and think about what items could be included in a memorial or become a family heirloom. Take your time, do not let yourself be overwhelmed and cherish the memories. If you’re not ready to go through the belongings, don’t - wait until you are ready. You may wish to create a memory box of possessions that you wish to keep, that you can open when you wish to remember. This could include photographs, certificates, medals, cards and letters, newspaper cuttings, the death announcement, the Order of Service from the funeral, a handkerchief, glasses or other personal items.
The staff at Rosedale Funeral Home recognise the value that memory boxes can have and we have a beautiful selection available for both adults and children. They are given completely free of charge and without obligation, no matter how long ago the person died or which funeral director you used. If you would like to select a memory box, just give us a ring or send us an email and we will arrange for you to come in and choose an appropriate design. The Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and their leaders travelled on three coaches from Attleborough, East Harling and Great Ellingham. Departing at 9am, the day started off cloudy and cool. When we arrived, the tide was almost completely in, so it was a bit of a walk across the beach to find a patch of sand big enough for all of us to congregate on! No sooner had we arrived, than the girls were had shoes and socks off and were in the sea, many of them soaked within the first 15 minutes. It soon became lunchtime and the sun burst out making a gloriously warm afternoon! Wet trousers became dry, holes were dug deeper into the sand and sandcastles became grander with the addition of flags and shells. As the tide went out, the girls explored across the beach to the sand dunes and beyond.

Many thanks to all the adults who made the day possible, especially the extra helpers drafted in from family and parents. “Now the Carnival is over…..” Members of Attleborough Heritage Group can look back on an excellent day at Attleborough Carnival when many of the Committee and their families took part in the procession through the Town wearing clothing appropriate to the latter stages of the Second World War. The theme was adopted to promote the Group’s forthcoming autumn presentation to mark the 70th anniversary of the arrival of American forces in East Anglia and especially in Attleborough and surrounding villages. There were some splendid USAAF uniforms on display together with two young evacuees with labels pinned to their clothing, a sprinkling of nursing ladies, a land girl, one extremely elegant “lady of the manor” and, to complete the picture, a very dubious looking spiv with nylons ostentatiously hanging from his
suitcase. It was altogether a wonderful turnout and great fun and the Heritage Group stall at the Carnival - manned by members of the Committee - was of great interest to many visitors. Further details on the October presentation, and tickets, may be obtained by visiting the Heritage Room, Soma House, Station Road, Attleborough, NR17 2AS, checking the website at www.attleboroughheritage.org.uk by emailing: info@attleboroughheritage.org or by ringing 01953 455877. ‘preserving yesterday’s and today’s memories for tomorrow’
July Has Been An Exciting Month ...for Andy and the team at Andy Free Independent Family Funeral Directors. Firstly, at the beginning of the month our website went live, we feel as we move forward, with future generations being able to access the internet from almost anywhere now days, it would be prudent to design a simple, easy to use, uncomplicated web site where good information on what to do next is instantly available to all. We have seen a trend in people contacting us through the website to ask questions or to gain information about the many services we can provide at a time of need, or for planning for the future. Visit us at: www.andyfree.com July saw the opportunity for celebration at the funeral home in Attleborough when we officially dedicated our Chapel of Rest and had the Funeral Home blessed by the Reverend Matthew Jackson, Rural Dean of Thetford and Rockland’s and Rector of Attleborough with Besthorpe. Clergy from all denominations came along to be with us, the day was well received by all, we were well fed and watered by Andy’s mum and dad, all the family were in attendance for the celebration, it was a lovely day.
August 2013
An engraved marble plaque was erected in the foyer of the building to mark the occasion, kindly provided to us from Keith Brett of H Brett and Son, Stonemasons, Norwich Road Watton. We offer all our families the opportunity to come to our funeral home to make the funeral arrangements. We are quietly situated next door to the Methodist Chapel at the end of the High Street with free parking opposite. We boast a splendid Chapel of Rest where families can come to see their loved one, candles are lit, music is played softly in the background and families are given as much quiet time as they need. With July came lots of sunny days and plenty of watering of our hanging baskets, they in turn bought lots of bees and butterflies to them, having the baskets is one of our ways of helping to protect our environment. There have been lots of comments from passers-by and people ringing just to say how lovely they look, Andy would like to personally thank everyone for their kind support and encouragement.

Harleston Jobs Clubs
An Inch From A World Record.
If you’re looking for help to create a CV or write job applications, need some assistance to search for jobs online or would like to take a look through the latest job vacancies in a friendly and informal group then come along to the Jobs Club.
Old Buckenham Airfield is please to confirm that, despite the best efforts of the weather, the 2013 Airshow was a considerable success. Held for the first time over two days, the show included a day dedicated to Pleasure Flights and Trial Lessons, allowing as many people as possible the chance to get airborne in a selection of extraordinary aircraft. So successful was this new venture that the slots for several of the aircraft were sold out. Saturday night saw the inaugural 1940s dance in our Blister Hangar. Several hundred turned out, with the majority in 1940’s dress, enjoying the Harmony Belles, Swing Machine Band and DJ Texas Tommy. Sunday was reserved for the main air display, the highlight of which was the first visit to Old Buckenham by the legendary Brendan O’Brien and his Flying Circus. Brendan is the only exponent of truck top landings in the UK. This extraordinary feat involves landing on a flat topped trailer being pulled along a runway. This has been performed successfully at airfields with 1500+ metre runways, but had never been attempted before in the mere 800 available at Old Buckenham. If he could make it, the airfield would immediately apply to Guinness to create a new record for the shortest runway length truck top landing. With weather conditions providing strong winds, there was no prospect in pre flight discussions that Brendan could get any where near the trailer. In the event, however, he managed to get his wheels within one inch of success before having to abort his attempt. What he did manage to do is stun seasoned pilots and the public alike with a show stealing demonstration of airmanship and showmanship. Immediately his engine was turned off on landing, Brendan and the airshow organiser, Matt Wilkins, agreed that he needs to return in 2014 to try again. Other highlights included a flawless performance by Lauren Richardson, the youngest female aerobatic display pilot in the UK. Air display veteran Rod Dean proved that age is only a number whilst taking the always popular Bulldog (former RAF trainer of choice) through a display
that would put most modern aircraft and pilots to shame. Perhaps the most popular display was the finale, Spitfire MH434, arguably the most famous single aircraft in the world. In the hands of Steve Jones who was “going up to have a bit of fun” 15 minutes of stunning flying demonstrated why MH434 has been the star of so many films, and the Spitfire lauded continuously as the most beautiful machine ever made. Airshow 2013 contained many superlatives; the largest display area (in an all new layout), the largest funfair, several times more space in the press and online than ever before, the most sponsors and the largest military display. It also won extensive praise from Health and Safety consultants and the Safety Advisory Group for the local authority, Breckland. Over 500 classic cars were on site over the weekend, a new record for the show.

The show also supports two charities, the Air Cadets and Leonard Cheshire Disability. £5,000 of programmes were donated to the two charities and separate donations will be made in due course. As well as the two main charities several others were given free pitches for fundraising. Matt Wilkins, Airfield Manager and Airshow Organiser said “ Airshow 2013 was ambitious from the start, and the extremely variable weather made the chances for success even less likely. Thanks to an extraordinary team of volunteers, along with Flt. Lt. Jason Offer of the Air Cadets, we have managed to pull off one of the great success stories in the airshow world so far in 2013. I would also particularly like to thank the team at Archant, lead by Steve Maddams, who have ensured that more people than ever have heard about the show from the EDP and other Archant titles. The decision to get Brendan O’Brien back in 2014 to go for a World Record was remarkably easy, and we’re already working on plans to improve and produce the best show ever in 2014” Airshow 2014 information and booking will be online at www.oldbuckenhamairshow.co.uk in early September 2013.

Cleaning Up After Teenagers The essential pizza and coke removal guide! The kids are home for the holidays and suddenly there are piles of teenagers lounging about all over your lovely clean house, spilling their pizza on the sofa and knocking over cans of coke on the carpet. Beginning to wish the holidays away already? Never fear, for those of you who haven’t already had a stain prevention treatment applied to your curtains and carpets, ServiceMaster Clean’s very own technical wizard Ian McCormack is here with a guide to removing the most common teenage holiday stains. (Note: please pre-test all treatments on an inconspicuous place first ie the back of your curtains or sofa) 1. Coke Actually coke is very simple to remove. It’s water based so simply dab with a clean damp white cloth until there is no further transfer from stain to cloth. Then apply a mixture of soap flakes diluted in warm water and finally rinse with clean water. Keep drying as you can all the way through the treatment. On bigger spills (ie the whole bottle instead of just a can) use a hair dryer in between applications to keep it dry.
soap flakes diluted in warm water and finally rinse with clean water. Keep drying as you go all the way through the treatment. If the stain is oily (ie pepperoni/olive/tuna) start the process above but use vodka instead of water in your clean damp white cloth, then apply a weak solution of soap flakes and finally rinse as above. 3. Chocolate Use Ian’s tried and tested method to remove chocolate and you’re practically a scientist. Harness the power of enzymes to eat away the chocolate for you! Pop out and buy a small box of biological washing powder (must be fresh). Mix up a weak solution of hand hot water and powder, apply to the stain, leave damp and hey presto, the enzymes will chomp away on the chocolate until it’s gone! It doesn’t have to be an expensive brand; supermarket own will work just as well. 4. Mud Has mummy’s little David Beckham walked mud in across the new carpet? Fear not; Ian says the key is to let the mud dry before attempting to remove the marks.
2. Pizza Teenagers are notoriously easily distracted, pizza, mouth, gaming... whoops! The treatment method for tomato stains is similar to coke but you may need a little extra help to deal with any extra oily toppings. As above. Start by dabbing the affected area with a clean damp white cloth until there is no further transfer from stain to cloth. Then apply a mixture of
August 2013
Once the mud is completely dry just vacuum away, if any stubborn marks remain, apply soap flakes (around a teaspoonful to a mug of warm water) and gently dab. Rinse with water. Did You Know, The Cost Of Energy Bills Have Soared By 140% In The Last Nine Years! The cost of household energy has risen seven times faster than household income since 2004, according to a recent study. The high costs are now the top household worry for Britons, ahead of the rising cost of food and mortgage payments. While the average UK household income has increased by 20% from £32,812 in 2004 to £39,468 today, the average energy bill has risen by 140%. Households were spending an average of £522 a year for their energy in 2004, but now pay £1,252 a year - 3.2% of income or double the 1.6% of eight years ago. The study found 83% of people believe that rising energy bills have had an impact on their disposable income, with 17% of these reporting that they no longer have any disposable income as a result and 27% saying energy bills have reduced their disposable income dramatically. Director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com Ann Robinson said: “This is the cold reality facing households today; in less than 10 years our energy bills have rocketed by 140%. The break-neck speed at which energy prices have sprinted upwards has caught many people unawares. Consumers are still playing catch-up. “Energy now accounts for a significant slice of household income which is why the numbers rationing their energy use have risen so steeply in recent years. But going cold or without is a short-term and potentially harmful fix and not a long-term solution.” So what can be done to reduce your household bills? You can control how much you spend on energy by making your home more energy-efficient and paying less for the energy you do use by moving to a competitively-priced energy plan. The Consumer magazine Which? has awarded Utility Warehouse with the best energy supplier award for the past 5 years. The survey looked at customer service, value for money and accuracy of bills, so perhaps this is a good starting point. The other great advantage of Utility Warehouse is they have a team of local authorised distributors who can conduct a FREE energy review. This will give you an immediate indication of what you are paying against what savings can be made, and as well as being completely free, it only takes around 15 mins. Savings can be made, you just need to put it into action. Call me now and let’s see how much you could reduce your energy bills by. Jonathan - 07802 690589

The same can also apply in more established businesses when essential aspects such as book keeping and payroll don’t justify taking on permanent team members or when cover is required for maternity leave or during short term trends such as seasonal peaks and troughs.
Over the last two or three years, On Tap director Sara says, “we have noticed a significant increase in the number of companies opting to consider the outsourcing route as a cost effective means of solving short term day to day business requirements as well as having the benefit of a fresh set of eyes and ears available when evaluating expansion projects, refinancing options, project management etc. Some have also opted for the option of full blown “virtual” accountancy and/or office support.”
She goes on to stress, “On Tap is not an employment agency or a huge call centre type machine. Our model is a “virtual office/business support solution”. We design and provide a tailored solution to meet our client’s needs, which may be anything from a full blown office function or simply a weekly book-keeping or payroll service. The State Or Your Family The Decision Is Yours! Seeing a loved one suffering from a long term and possibly permanent illness is heart breaking. But imagine how much more difficult and frustrating it can be when you learn that the spouse, parent or next of kin of the patient legally cannot make decisions or influence their medical treatment. Your frustration will increase sharply if you know beyond all doubt that it is a treatment that he/she would not have wanted! A recent case made headlines when a family were over ruled and the medical team, supported by the Courts, resuscitated their mother despite her previously stating strong feeling against resuscitation. She had in fact made her feeling plain to her family, her solicitor and her own GP well in advance, and so the family were astounded when the Court ruled against them. All because nothing was in writing! It need not have been that way, and the Courts not necessary thanks to the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA). The Act gives very adult the ability to bestow any person or persons they trust with the authority to act, speak and sign for you when you are unable to yourself. This authority can even include, if you so wish, the option of allowing your attorney(s) the authority to withhold life sustaining treatment. This can be extremely comforting if you have concerns about this aspect of your medical treatment. The authority is called a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). There is an LPA (property) for financial matters and an LPA (personal welfare) for health and medical related matters.
In medical matters, if you prefer not to nominate an attorney you can instead opt for an Advanced Directive (Living Will), wherein you make your own decisions, in writing, in advance. Although a cheaper option it can be
a lot more complicated and is not suitable for everyone. Avoid if you can, choosing between an LPA (personal) and a Living Will on the basis of cost, but rather on the option that gives you most peace of mind. As to cost of an Lasting Power of Attorney, you can get and complete your own forms for free, but there will still be the registration fee to pay. Most people find the forms and rules far too complicated and so instead they ask someone like a solicitor or Will Writer to complete their forms for them. But when prices can vary from £200 to £600 or more per LPA you should insist on a fixed price that includes for everything, and a confirmation that there are no hidden extras. Only recently a client told us about a local advert that quoted £360 for two LPAs, but after further enquiry discovered that with all the extra it would in fact cost £1,100, and that was without a further £400- £500 for a home visit! So yes it does pay to ask the right questions!

The Inn On The Green Stands in the heart of the beautiful picturesque Norfolk village of New Buckenham. Formerly named The George it was built in 1882 as a railway hotel but the intended train line between Attleborough and Diss was never completed.
The bookshelves are stacked with novels for anyone to browse through and borrow and there is a display case full of antique and collectable items for sale.
However this grand Victorian building remained and has been providing hospitality to the village and surrounding area ever since.
Outside, what was once a scruffy yard is transformed into a lovely paved eating area surrounded by fragrant white roses, box trees and vines.
Sadly in 2010 New Buckenham suddenly had no pubs at all as both The Kings Head and The George called last orders for the final time and closed their doors.
The bar stocks a selection of local real ales from St Peter’s, Elmtree etc and premium draught lagers Peroni and Becks. There is a comprehensive wine list with bottle prices starting at £15.95 to £30.
The new owner and his partner live in the village and decided that despite it’s delapidated and run down condition The George was worth restoring and reopening as soon as possible. So with much redesigning, decorating and furnishing it is reborn as the Inn on the Green.
The menu is fairly small but all food is locally sourced, freshly delivered and prepared each day by 3 chefs and Sunday breakfast is proving very popular with everyone!
They also run The Gamekeeper in neighbouring Old Buckenham, a 17th century brick and timbered Grade 2 listed building and therefore a huge contrast in style to the now very contemporary Inn.
Visit Us: Chapel Street, New Buckenham, Norfolk, NR16 2BB
There are Art Deco touches with soft blues, greens and terracotta colours throughout the bar, snug and airy dining room with its beautiful arched windows.

Ox & Plough Old Buckenham Trading in racing cars for beer casks has been a smooth transistion for International Race Driver Ben Devlin and his partner Nicola. Having opened and developed several bars and restaurents in North America during his time competing in prestigious race events, the decision to run The Ox and Plough in the picturesque village of Old Buckenham in South Norfolk proved to be a welcome change of pace.
“At one time there were seven pubs in Old Buckenham and it’s very important to us to keep a good family run village pub. We want to create a community feel which is why we open at 11am to provide tea, coffee and hot/cold bar snacks for local people and anybody enjoying the rural area. Being a dog friendly establishment we always welcome holiday makers and hiking groups.”
“Growing up in the village and attending the local schools it was important to Nicola and myself that we raised our family in the area. When the oppotunity to acquire The Ox and Plough arose we were excited to move back to the village playing an active role in the community.”
With four resident ales and two weekly guest beers to tempt the quenching thirst of any traditional drinker as well as live music, family treasure hunts and fundraising events Ben and Nicola hope to involve all groups and ages within the area.
The early 19th Century public house is situated at the edge of the village green which at 40 acres is believed to be possibly the largest beer garden in the country!.
“It’s important to create a community feel at The Ox and Plough and bring back some old traditions of a village public house.”

Gardening Tips For August This month is really just a repeat of July - keep watering early morning or during the evening. Dead head flowering plants regularly to encourage the second/third flush of blooms and keep tying in shoots of climbing plants as they grow. Apart from sharing some of our helpful gardening hints and seasonal tips, we will also try to demystify some of the issues which often puzzle our fellow gardeners. As with many things in life, experts try to baffle most of us with complicated or scientific names and the area of gardening is no exception. So we thought about writing about the quirks of nature that can happen to plants. Proliferation is known to affect all types of roses. This is when a new bud along with its unfurling leaves will grow through the centre of a rose that is already in full bloom. While the exact cause is still unknown, this occurrence is often seen during cold weather in the spring and occurs on the first emergence of flowers. Proliferation is unpredictable and spontaneous. It can happen one year and not the next. Not all the flowers of a plant will be affected; only a few or as many as half of the flowers will have the mutation. It isn’t harmful and
August 2013
will not cause the blooms to die, but the affected flowers should be removed, to conserve the plant’s energy. A rose Sport is a genetic mutation where the plant suddenly has a flower which is different to the normal colour or characteristics of the parent plant. There are several reasons why you can get a new flower colour. The most common cause is a plant mutation which then changes the growth habit or flower colour of the parent plant. These new shoots are known as ‘Sports’, they are usually stable and can be propagated. Whilst, some sports are stable, others not, reverting back to the parent. A famous sport and reversion is the red ‘Rosa Gallica officinalis’ aka ‘Apothecary’s Rose’ that sports the striped ‘Rosa Mundi’, then often it reverts back. It is not unusual to see both roses on the same plant. Reversion can happen amongst trees, shrubs and perennials. Most commonly seen when a variegated plant or one with coloured leaves, for example, golden leaved forms, produce plain green leaved
shoots. These must be removed from where they arise otherwise the whole plant will soon “revert” to the common green form. This is because the green form is the dominant variety. Interestingly, a coloured or variegated leaved form will tend to be varyingly less vigorous and a little more prone to extreme conditions. Our final weird condition is Fasciation where flowers and/or stems can fuse together and become flattened. This isn’t harmful to the plant and can be decorative. Not all strange growths are caused by the plants themselves. There
are many curls, twists and galls (lumps and bumps), that are caused by little grubs which are the progeny of various mites, flies and wasps. Some of these ‘growths’ are coloured adding an extra interest or have a covering of soft bristles. Whatever plants are doing in your garden, whether by accident or intent, maintaining them is crucial this month. Typically a time for holidays and relaxation, forgetting the usual chores or putting them off could lead to a lot of work later. Simon White & Peter Chinnery of Peter Beales Roses.

Dentabrite Clinic - Diss
Can help keep you Cool!
‘Dentabrite Clinic, situated on 4 Church Street, Diss, offers a wide range of dental treatments, ranging from white fillings, advanced root canal treatment, crown and bridge work to tooth whitening.
Essential Oils Essential oils belonging to the mint family, especially those with higher percentages of menthol like Peppermint Oil, will help make the body feel cooler. Menthol has the ability to trick receptors in the brain into thinking that the body is cooler than it really is. The Eucalpytol in Eucalyptus Oil acts similarly. Therefore my favourite three cooling essential oils to use on
uncomfortably hot days are Peppermint Oil, Spearmint Oil and Eucalyptus Oil (citriodora is my favourite of the Eucalyptus family as it has a gorgeous citrus aroma). Hydrosols Hydrosols don’t need to be diluted before using as they are water soluble, and can be used directly on the skin as body sprays to help keep you cool and refreshed. They can also be used as room mists. Eucalyptus will have the added benefit of keeping bugs at bay. Room Mist / Body Spray Fill a spray bottle with the choice of 50ml of water/ hydrosol and 50ml of alcohol (vodka will do) or 100ml of water/ hydrosol. Add 30-40 drops of essential oil. Shake the bottle prior to each use. Mist lightly in the room. Be especially careful not to allow the air freshener mist fall onto furniture or into open beverages When using this recipe to create a body spray be absolutely sure that you shake the spray bottle before and during each application and avoid spraying the mist on your face.

Vauxhall Mokka Tech Line 1.6 16v By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist Twitter: @carwriteups Visit: www.carwriteups.co.uk
THE VAUXHALL MOKKA mixes functionality with a comfortable elevated seating position. It’s the Griffin-badged company’s answer to the Nissan Juke or the Skoda Yeti, and power to the small Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) is provided by three efficient engines, all equipped with fuel saving Start/Stop technology. The petrol version comprises a 1.6-litre engine or a 1.4-litre Turbo and there is a 1.7-litre CDTI diesel. I drove the 113bhp 1.6 petrol Mokka; it has moderate pulling power, but, working your way through the five speed gearbox, it eventually spins up to a decent speed. It also provides a smooth and grippy ride. Looks-wise the Mokka is beefy and incorporates Vauxhall’s signature ‘blade’ on the body side, sweeping towards the rear. Its muscular disposition is reinforced by its higher ground clearance and 18” alloy wheels. But what I really liked about the Mokka is its cleverness. Inside, the vehicle displays archetypal Vauxhall values such as versatility and user-friendly functionality, providing up to 1,372-litres of load space and 19 storage locations.
The Mokka also offers the latest generation Flex-Fix bicycle carrier. The user-friendly case is fully integrated in the rear underbody, functioning like a drawer and accommodating up to three bikes at a time. Brilliant, if you’re into two-wheeled outdoor family fun. The SUV is available in front-wheel and all-wheel-drive. The 4x4 system wasn’t fitted to my demo, but if I was in the market for a Mokka I’d definitely want it.

The Vauxhall Mokka range is available priced, as my test model was, from a very reasonable £15,995 - and it’s far more handsome than its unsightly rival, the Nissan Juke. As you’d expect, the extra technology ensures a high level of stability and traction, extending the car’s capabilities to more rugged environments. It’s always worth having for extra safety reasons alone. Standard features that enhanced the driving experience for me included Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control (TC) as well as Hill Start Assist (HAS). Other progressive upmarket gadgetry the Mokka brings to the table includes Advanced Adaptive Forward Lighting. This increases driving safety and includes High Beam Assist. The lights
