The cover in such a policy is sometimes quite generous to enable you to proceed without risking your financial well-being by being personally responsible for your costs, and also the opponent’s if you lost.
The outcome of a case cannot be predicted and the process is timeconsuming and stressful. The court procedures now actively require parties to consider settlement of disputes to save court time and costs.
Now that legal aid is no longer available for most civil claims, it is more important than ever to prepare for the possible eventuality of getting drawn into a legal dispute.
The terms of legal expenses policies vary and there are usually exclusions which you will need to be aware of. You could discuss the different policies available with your insurance broker.
This can be by a range of different methods such as negotiation, discussion and mediation. At Jackamans we have seen many cases satisfactorily settled by these methods.
The best way to do this is to take out legal expenses insurance which can be a stand-alone policy or as an attachment to a housing or motor policy. The cost is not likely to be high but it could make all the difference to being able to take the
Even if you have the benefit of legal expenses insurance cover, and particularly if you do not, the settlement of a dispute at as early a stage as possible is of great importance. The cost of going to court and a trial is very high, and

The latest ‘must have’ for your home “Woodburners have become a ‘must have’ for many households across Norfolk” Since the dawn of civilisation people have been lighting fires for both cooking and heating purposes.
schemes for having a woodburner installed as do all other European countries!
Now in the modern age of central heating, gas fires and electric heaters you would think that lighting fires would be something that was left behind with your ancestors, you would however be wrong!
In a survey run this year (Sept 2014) by the SIA 21% of people aspire to owning a wood burning stove. Many articles in newspapers and magazines state that woodburners are the latest trend to add value to your house
Woodburners have become a ‘must have’ for many households across Norfolk, East Anglia and the rest of the United Kingdom. The market for wood burning stoves has grown 20% per annum since 21007 according to HETAS the industry regulatory body. This equates to 175,000 households per year with 200,000 in 2013. This increase can be attributed to a few factors. The homeowner’s attemps to reduce their energy bills and become less dependent on one form of energy supplier, be it Oil, Gas or Electricity. With price rises for electricity, gas and oil reaching record highs, purchasing wood for a wood burning stove can really save a household many £££’s on their home heating bills. With a stove top kettle you can also use your woodburner to make a cup of tea! On a greener front woodburning stoves could account for 10% of the UK govenrments carbon reduction targets by 2020 with a potential of 25% of the governments domestic renewable heat energy target gain by 2020 according to The Stove Industry Alliance (SIA). It’s a shame the UK government does not offer any incentive
So what should you look out for when buying a wood burner? 1. Output. All stoves have a nominal heat output measured in Kw. A reputable installer will work out the output required in your room. This is dependent on size, insulation, numbers of windows etc. A newly built house which is energy efficient will require a lot less output. A typical rating for a standard room is between 4-5 Kw.
A moisture metre is an invaluable tool. You will need room to store the logs, ideally sheltered but with airflow. A multi fuel stove will run on either solid fuel, anthracites, smokeless fuel nuggets etc or wood. Some multi-fuel stoves can be run on ‘slumber’ overnight, whereas wood burning stoves can’t.
The Old Rectory, Mileham Road, Litcham. Norfolk. PE32 2NZ T: 07847 426953 / 01508 498393 E: norfolkwoodburners@outlook.com www.norfolkwoodburners.co.uk Registered co: Whitley and Walford Limited Company Number: 07753494
It’s also worth remembering that you will need to have the chimney swept at least once a year. 4. Stove Installation. Having a stove installed is not something that you can do yourself - you will need a qualified installer and the installation will need to meet building regulations. You should only use an installer that is registered with a governmentrecognised Competent Person Scheme (CPS), such as Hetas.
2. Efficiency of the stove. This is set by building Regulations which have set a minimum efficiency for all ne heating appliances. The minimum gross efficiency for a dry stove is 65%. However these days most stoves are 70% + with some such as the Aga Little Wenlock achieving over 80% 3. Wood or multi fuel stove? Wood is a carbon-neutral fuel, as the carbon it gives off is counteracted by the carbon it takes in while growing. A wood burning stove is designed to run only on firewood or other types of biomass fuel such as briquettes etc. For any stove to run efficiently requires well seasoned logs with at most 25% moisture content, ideally 20%.

Diss Museum A new commemorative book A job came up recently to edit a commemorative book about going to the pictures in Norfolk. It was being produced by Cinema City in Norwich. I had every kind of experience they wanted; and thought I could handle the job while still managing Diss Museum. But I didn’t even get an interview, just a letter saying that they felt I didn’t know enough about the subject! I have only been going to the pictures in Norfolk for 60 years. The job went, as usual, to a young woman. The book is to be written by young people aged between 18 and 35. So the editor would have to find the young people, find out if they can write and then set them loose on a subject they cannot know anything about. To remember Diss Picture House you would have to be at least 45. I suspect that the use of young people was a provision of the funding.
January 2015
So the whole thing seemed shot in the foot from the start. But I didn’t mind when the man from Cinema City asked if the museum had anything we could contribute. Two hours later he received two articles about local picture-going, a sheaf of pictures and contacts with people who used to work in Diss Picture House. He was understandably delighted. If he gets that quality of material from everyone he will do well.Diss will probably get a double-page spread in the book, with a credit for Diss Museum. The man emailed me at 4pm on a Friday and had all that material by 6pm. I phoned renowned cartoonist Mike Webb, and he gave me contacts with former picture house employees, whom I phoned straight away.To me, something like this is as much a part of my museum work as anything I do. - Basil Abbott

Does your bed provide you with a sound sleep? Is your mattress NBF approved? When you’re shopping for a new bed or mattress, what do you look for? Comfort, quality or price?
Code of Practice are Flammability, Cleanliness of Fillings and Trade Descriptions.
In fact you should be looking at all of these factors, but how do you know what you are buying is up to standard?
All products must comply with British Standard fire regulations. With a cigarette test, did you know that within 3 minutes a noncompliant mattress would be on fire, whereas a compliant mattress will have self-extinguished in that time. The average UK response time for fire fighters is nine minutes, within this time the room would be a blaze and would pose risk to life.
The National Bed Federation (NBF), founded in 1912, is the recognised trade association representing UK manufacturers of beds and their suppliers. The members of the NBF today account for 75% of the total UK bedding turnover. Last year, the NBF have introduced their new Code of Practice, the main objectives of this are to encourage good practice within the bed industry and to reassure consumers that the National Bed Federation members are independently assessed and comply with the recognised industry standards as part of its requirement for membership. All NBF members are assessed to a robust standard, this helps discourage bad practise within the industry. There are three key criteria for the
Many non NBF members use uncleaned materials reused from old mattresses which is unhygienic and unsanitary. The Code of Practice ensures that all members use correct filling and if they are using recycled materials, they must declare this. The trade descriptions element ensures that all models are as they say they are, making sure that the spring counts, fillings and fabrics are all as they are in their descriptions and labelling if applicable. So when you are looking at purchasing a new bed or mattress,
it may be worth looking that the manufacturer is NBF approved. Although your new mattress may not be NBF approved, it does not mean that it is not compliant with safety regulations. Various mattresses were tested across the UK in 2013, and some were found to be an old mattress inside a new mattress. The old mattresses had been recovered with a new top layer of fillings, new border and cover on top, so on the outside looks like a brand new mattress. This is a very profitable way of making mattresses, however it is very unethical and does not comply to fire safety regulations, even though the fire label says it does. Many mattresses that can be purchased online are not regulated and descriptions and names differ from what is advertised and if the label says it has 1000 pocket springs, you wouldn’t know if it didn’t!
At Sound Sleep, all of our beds and mattresses from NBF approved members. So when you buy your new bed or mattress from Sound Sleep, you can be sure it is brand new, clean, correct specification and most importantly safe! The 27th December sees the start of our biggest ever January sale, with huge savings across the store including free drawers offers on Sealy Hybrid Geltex Beds and free Geltex pillows worth £150 when buying a new Silentnight Geltex bed. Attleborough & District Horticultural Society Notice of January 2015 meeting and November report The November meeting of the society featured an excellent talk on “Bees” by Paul Metcalf. Bees first appeared in the Paleogenic period, some 45 to 65 million years ago, and today there are around 20,000 species of bees worldwide – of which only four are classified as honeybees. In the UK there are around 250 species of
solitary bees and 23 species of bumble bees, all of the latter being capable of stinging. In the UK we consume some 24,000 tonnes of honey each year, but unfortunately much of this is imported from China. The biggest problem for beekeepers is the varroa mite which has spread throughout the world with the possible
exception of Australia. It arrived here in 1992 and if left unchecked will ultimately kill colonies within three to five years. The table show was poorly supported this month; however it was a good night for Ron Brewer who took first place for his three stems of flowers and his exhibit of a butternut squash. Suffolk & Norfolk Youth Action Suffolk and Norfolk Youth Action look at the Festive Light Switch on. Christmas time at SNYA is always a time to rejoice. Up went the old Christmas Tree, donated many years ago by the then fourteen year olds Bradley Biddlecombe and Harley Golder. Both have now finished Sixth Form, moved from Norfolk and gone on to employment and University but for the rest of us it is business as usual. In South Norfolk, SNYA Radio broadcast live from the Wymondham Dickensian Steampunk Christmas Fayre, organised by the Wymondham Lions. Steam Punk is a mixture of modern day life with a Victorian twist, mashed up into one. It was a cold afternoon when the procession left Back Lane led by the City of Norwich Pipe Band. The procession included a horse drawn carriage, carrying Father Christmas and the Snow Queen with the Mayor and the Lions President following behind in an additional car. The street entertainment was very enjoyable with Bubbleologist, Charlie Cheesecake, and Fool Hardy Steam Punk, to name but a few. Wymondham looks magical at this time of year, with the main High Street crowded with residents enjoying the hospitality of
January 2015
the local shops. Nearer the Market Cross, stall holders, charities and sponsors displayed their wares and to the rear of the stage was a food isle of marques selling everything from ‘Black Turkey’ Burgers to the traditional Hog Roast. This year’s winners of ‘Wymondham’s Got Talent’,’ Behind the Green Screen’, performed to the left of the main stage followed by Dancing Elves, Victorian Ladies and Santas performing on the stage and floor areas. At 16:15hrs it was time for the light switch on and for the second year in succession, Richard Gauntlett did the honours. After a countdown the button was pressed and the all-white lights lit up Market Cross. Richard told me, “I am the Writer and Director of this year’s pantomime and we have brought together an all-star cast to perform Peter Pan at the Norwich Theatre Royal. Ex Corrie star Kevin Kennedy is the evil Captain Hook, CBeebies Sid Sloane is the ships cook and I play Smee. Ruth Betteridge is back for her second year, in pantomime, this time as Wendy, Charlotte
Baptie plays Peter Pan and Sinead Kenny performs as Tiger Lilly. The cast is larger than usual with local children playing John and Michael Darling. Do look out for our new Crocodile!” You can see Peter Pan at the Norwich Theatre Royal this Christmas from December 18th to January 18th. (SNYA’s advice is to book early so you are not disappointed) The following day, SNYA Radio was pounding the streets of Attleborough interviewing the hundreds of stall holders, charities, tradespeople and visitors to the Attleborough Christmas Light switch on. This event is spread over several venues including the Sport Centre, Town Hall, Church Hall and of course, Queens Square. Street entertainment was not the main thrust of the event, notwithstanding that the juggler was very entertaining, but the free classic bus trip around Attleborough is a highlight. For the second year SNYA, with the help of Attleborough Players, got everyone singing along to Christmas songs throughout the journey. I must admit this year’s
passengers were more tuneful than the previous year. Led by Attleborough’s Fire Engine, Santa arrived at 14:20hrs.He was accompanied by this year’s Rose Queen, Tyler Barker, Carnival Prince, Owen Stewart, Carnival Princess, Kaci Thorpe and our Town Mayor, Karen Pettit. The light switch on was undertaken by Reece Fuller. The Fuller family were successful in an auction, earlier in the year, when they bid the highest amount for the honour; all the money raised was donated to Cancer awareness. One of the things I do like about Attleborough’s Festive Light Switch on is the way we maintain our link with tradition; the Rev. Matthew Jackson blessed the Christmas Tree prior to the countdown and Reece pressed the button to light up the Town at 16:15 hrs. As the crowds dispersed many headed for St Mary’s Church for a traditional carol service. Exchange2 SNYA provides Youth Services for Exchange2, a youth drop-in centre

Amazon Gym New ownership, New ideas The gym, located in Shropham, opened in late 2008 and was run by Amazon Leisure as a working showroom. This meant that we have been able to offer some of the best fitness equipment on the market and swap equipment around on a regular basis. In August 2014 the gym changed hands and is now owned by Tom Bushell. We still have ties to Amazon Leisure, some of
the best fitness equipment on the market and access to the latest training styles and methods. However now we are a more memberbased gym where the members are our main emphasis rather than that of displaying fitness equipment for sale. This has enabled us to make changes already to our 8000sq foot of space.
Our ethos is that fitness and health is part of a journey. We aim to educate our members through their journey so that they make the right choices in food and exercise. This process is helped by the fact that all of our trainers are fully qualified personal trainers. All the staff members are encouraged to keep their knowledge upto-date and are sent on regular training courses. This year we teamed up with Link to Learning and offer fitness courses from our trainer classroom. Two of our members of staff are now qualified tutors and we will be offering Fitness Instructor, Personal training, kettlebell and more certifications.Check our website or Facebook page for updates. We offer a wide range of different services. Our gym is split into different zones to aid our members as they train. There is a wide range of cardiovascular machines, including 8 treadmills, concept 2 rowers and access to spin bikes. We also boast a large free weights area and a big range of weight machines. As part of all of our memberships the member will get an individual gym plan upon joining and we encourage members to review these, free of charge, on a regular basis. As all of our fitness staff are qualified personal trainers we offer personal training on a 1-2-1 basis or in a small group environment to reduce cost. This includes a more bespoke training plan and nutritional advice to help members on their journey. We also provide health checks; measuring blood pressure, body fat, resting heart rate,

lean mass and body circumferences. Our goal is to assist our members in any way we can. To ensure we do this we offer a wide range of health and fitness supplements. Not A Big Fat Gypsy Wedding! Gemma from Pink Couture talks about chasing her dreams How many people don’t take that one chance to persue their dreams? Gemma’s was to pursue dressmaking but that meant giving up her 10 year career with Norwich Union in order to start again. So like most, she started on the shop floor learning the basics, meeting clients and got to see first hand the level of service that was being offered at that time. Gemma opened her first studio Ginx Couture in Norwich where she initially catered for all things Bridal and Civil Partnerships. Her career saw her headlining fashion shows in London, Birmingham, Leeds, Brighton and Norwich and featured in an interview on the Sky Wedding channel. The immediate feedback from clients was that it was not just the way their bespoke garments made them feel, it was the whole boutique experience. The process starts with taking a clients initial ideas and then through the use of mood boards, fabric sourcing, preparing

working designs and a few cups of coffee the garments then start to evolve. The process then moves onto pattern cutting and a mock up fitting. After taking a break to start her family, Gemma is back at the cutting table designing and creating all things including wedding garments, prom dresses, formal and occasion wear under her new label Pink Couture. 18 years of blood, sweat and tears have now led Gemma to be looking at up and coming trends with wearable technology starting to become mainstream. Always looking out to be inspired for new creations, a year ago after seeing a project involving illuminated garments, the idea of incorporating
LED’s into her designs was conceived. Several prototypes later and drawing on her husband’s technical knowledge, she has created a stunning wedding dress fit for a princess. “Using this innovation I am excited to be launching this technology into anything a client may desire, the possibilities are endless.

Inspired Flower Design New Floristry Business in Norfolk Inspired by a passion for flowers, a unique creative flare and a love of Norfolk, a freelance florist from Attleborough has already received national recognition of her bespoke designs. Tracey Diplock, from Attleborough, was able to launch her floristry business with the help from NWES, an enterprise agency who specialises in helping people turning their business idea into reality. Inspired Flower Design creates beautiful bespoke floral designs for any occasion in Norfolk and the surrounding areas, offering a personal service to clients for weddings, funerals, bouquets and corporate events “I absolutely adore Norfolk, its flowers and its ever-changing landscape. I’m really excited to be bringing my creativity and my love of flowers together to make any occasion extra special for my customers.” What began as an interest soon turned into more as Tracey worked in a florists shop before studying floristry at night school alongside her job as a manager for a national magazine. However the lure of floristry was too great and she made the decision to follow her dreams and
pursue her freelance business. “Working as a freelancer means I have more time to dedicate to each of my clients than many florist shops, and for me there is no better feeling than seeing their smiles as I hand them their bouquets and designs” Tracey said. Having joined the Norwich-based NWES programme, Tracey found this to be very helpful, offering advice and support along the way. Business Advisor Victoria Williamson said of Miss Diplock “Tracey is an immensely talented florist with a real passion for her business, but most importantly is her focus on customer satisfaction, for every design to be one which both she and the customers are proud of.”
Design is going from strength to strength and I am so proud. However my greatest success is immensely personal. I am working on my dream…getting up every day and loving what I do, being happy, fulfilled and raring to go” says Tracey. East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) Appeal launched for new Norfolk hospice The end of 2014 saw East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) proudly welcome HRH The Duchess of Cambridge, as Royal Patron, to the launch of the charity’s £10 million fundraising appeal to build a new children’s hospice in the heart of Norfolk. The nook appeal was officially launched on 25th November at the Norfolk Showground where hundreds of guests from across the county comprising individuals, businesses, charitable trusts, schools and community groups attended to hear the charity’s vision of a new hospice built on a five-acre woodland plot in Framingham Earl, south of Norwich. The purpose-built hospice, which will replace the charity’s current facility in Quidenham, will be named the nook and offer facilities such as a hydrotherapy pool, private areas for clinical care and dedicated rooms for therapies. The nook will be on an idyllic woodland plot, creating a wonderful tranquil setting

for children, young people and families. It will also be better positioned in the county, within a thriving local community and won’t be isolated from services, hospitals and road network.
vision publicly. Everyone at EACH was honoured and extremely proud to have HRH The Duchess of Cambridge as Royal Patron and delighted she was able to join us on the day.
Quidenham hospice is one of the oldest in the UK and has been an incredible home-from-home to many families for more than 20 years.
“We’ve received a great response to our campaign so far, with so many pledges of support. There are lots of ways that you can get involved and help us to build our new hospice, so please do contact our fundraising team to discuss more and find out how you can help.”
However, the hospice was converted from an old country house and is extremely restricted in its facilities and development. The demand on services continues to increase, and care for young people over the last decade has become far more complicated – the charity is rapidly outgrowing the constraints of the building. Mark Loades, Appeal Fundraising Manager, explained: “We were thrilled with our launch event for the nook appeal and it was great to be able to share our
To achieve our vision for Norfolk we need to raise £10 million whilst still running our Quidenham hospice to it’s current high standards. We cannot do this without the support of everyone in the county. So we invite you, whether you are an individual, a company, a school or a community group, to become part of this very special project and we have a number of ways in which you can do this including becoming a friend of the nook or a

Windows Are Such An Important Facet of Your Home They give your property character and individuality, and also offer the practicalities of insulation and security Because of their very nature, the windows and doors on your house or bungalow are a significant investment and cost.
repairs, worn out window hinges, broken window handles and locks, and draughty includes clear, patterned, toughened, leaded and Georgian bar windows.
Problems, however, can occur – hinges and locks may break or stick, handles work loose, there may be draughts around the house and windows may become “blown” or steamed up.
New locks and handles, bathroom and kitchen windows, hinges, patio doors and cracked panes can all be easily and effectively dealt with. It’s not only with repairs, the same applies for upgrades as well such as to A-rated windows with the highest grade glass.
But rest assured, these issues do not have to prove as expensive to remedy as you may think - and repair is usually the best and most cost-effective course of action, rather than replacement. Steve Olley, who has 20 years’ experience of repairing double-glazed and sealed-unit windows, knows that an effective repair can give windows a whole new lease of life. “A lot of people think that when the glass has blown - when you cannot see through a window properly - or that there is condensation on a window or that double-glazed units become steamed up, that they need a whole new window,” explained Steve, who runs S & C Window Repairs with his wife Clare. “But repairs are relatively straightforward and not expensive. The glass can come out of the frames and be replaced, so there is simply no need to go to the expense of having a whole new window and frame.” S & C Windows provides a service to repair windows, doors and conservatories and that includes misted or broken sealed units, UPVC window and door repairs, conservatory repairs, patio door
Covering the whole of Norfolk from bases in Norwich and near Holt, S & C Windows, can upgrade standard windows to A-rated windows, without removing the frames and merely by changing the quality of the glass. Steve said: “We can do upgrades with the highest quality glass without changing the frames.” In the 1970s and 1980s people often selected golden handles for their windows, commented Steve, but they can also be changed quite easily to give the windows an upgrade and a modern new appearance. “I am cheaper than other operators and can offer cost-effective solutions with a quick response.” he added. Customers ring through to Steve’s main contact number where a call operator will take brief details and instantly send them on to Steve via text. “I’ll then telephone the customer to make an appointment, make a visit to assess what they need and if they are happy with the quote place an order for what is needed and then arrange a convenient time to install.” he said.

Don’t get cold this Winter Rising energy costs mean the majority of us are reluctant to turn on the heating As the cold snap comes in, fears that we cannot afford our energy bills afflict four in 10 households. Around six million households across England plan to cut back on heating their home this winter due to the worry about the rising cost of fuel. Yet at the same time millions of pounds worth of help is being left unclaimed under Warm Front, the Government’s scheme to help the poorest households in England to make their homes warmer and cut their energy bills. Across England only 11,766 people applied to Warm Front between April and July last year - a huge fall compared to the 133,034 applications received in the whole of the year before. As this is the last year of Warm Front, Consumer Focus, Citizens Advice, Age UK and the National Children’s Bureau are joining forces to promote the scheme to make sure that as many vulnerable
people and families as possible get this help as the heating and insulation improvements Warm Front offers could help thousands of households to stay warm and well and save up to £600 off their energy bills each year. Jonathan Stearn, Programme Director at Consumer Focus, says: “A cold home can damage your health. So it’s very worrying that high energy prices are leading so many people to cut back on their heating. “We want to make sure that as many people as possible are helped to cut their bills and stay warm and well through the Warm Front scheme this year. We would urge anyone struggling with their bills to find out if they can claim free help.’
Rachel Monaghan, Senior Development Officer for Health and Well-being at the National Children’s Bureau, says some families with children will have to make the choice whether to heat or eat this
winter. She comments: “We know many families are struggling to cope with rising fuel bills and are having to cut back on other essentials like food. We also know that growing up in a cold and damp home can have a real effect on children’s health, learning and enjoyment of life. “The Warm Front scheme can help cut bills and keep families warm and healthy, so we urge anyone worried about their fuel bills to find out as soon as they can if they are eligible to receive support.”
The local Utility Warehouse representative for this area is: Jonathan who you can contact on 07802 690589. They offer a FREE home assessment, so it really is worth spending just 10 minutes to see how much you can reduce your bills by each month. Utility Warehouse says they save the average household around £60.00 EVERY month!
Alternatively look at switching your energy provider to someone like The Utility Warehouse, who guarantees they will save you money when you switch all your services to them, or they will give you back Double the Difference. It’s a bold statement, but Utility Warehouse do win the Consumer Magazine Which? recommendations time and time again, and more and more people are switching to them.

Keeping Safe in Winter Tips for keeping safe in Winter Getting ready for the cold weather – which can start as early as October – means that you’re more likely to keep warm and well. Here are some things you can do to stay safe and ward off the winter chills. Have your heating system serviced and your chimney swept, or ask your landlord to do this if it’s their responsibility. If you have wood-burning, coal or gas heaters, make sure there’s adequate ventilation. Never block air vents, and get your boiler serviced every 12 months by a gas engineer. Check with your energy supplier for further advice to help you prepare for winter. Our free guide Save energy, pay lesshas tips on insulating and draught-proofing your home. Make sure you know where your main stopcock is and check that it’s easy to turn. If it’s jammed, you may need to

weather. Some councils provide free bags of the mix, if you or someone else can pick them up. Otherwise you could try a local DIY store.
Have your electric blanket serviced – this should be done at least every three years.
Consider fitting a grab rail if you have steps at your front or back door.
Make sure your smoke alarm is working. You can ask your local fire service to check your home for fire safety. It’s free and you may be eligible to get free smoke alarms fitted. Install an audible carbon monoxide alarm in each room that has a gas appliance. Ask your family or friends if they could call or visit you more often if there’s an extended period of cold weather. Keep a mixture of salt and sand handy to put on steps or paths in icy
