INTRODUCTON

Introduction Foreword Diss was recently named as one of the top 10 destinations for ‘down-sizing’ city dwellers. Four of the 10, including Diss, were Cittaslow towns, embracing the slow food and quality of life ideals begun in Italy. There have been festivals galore in the past few years, celebrating food, books, beer, local history and popular music, while the carnival has been successfully revived. New cafes have sprung up. The Film Society thrives. The Corn Hall is being re-invented as an arts venue, with entertainment for every taste. The Town Council, Cittaslow committee and Diss Community Partnership work tirelessly on behalf of the people. Many of the societies do good charity work At the same time we have seen the disappearance of many well-known shops, including: Castle Fruit, two wine shops, Siddalls shoe shop, Amity Florists, Revolution Records, the China Cabinet, Woolworths, Pestells the hairdressers, Blue Moon, Albrights in its ironmonger form and others. The economic drift is towards the southern part of the town, with empty premises appearing almost weekly in the northern part. The Corn Hall project is important in bringing life back to that area. The church, post office, library, museum and market help to ensure that it does not become a ghost town. The public houses and restaurants also attract people to the vicinity. The Diss Town Guide, the 21st in its present form, tries to reflect the whole diversity of the place, giving an impression of what it is like to be here, as well as being packed with information. Some local history is included, with Ethel Le Neve’s involvement in the Crippen murder of 1910 and the bi-centenary in 2011 of Thomas Manning’s journey across the Himalayas to meet the Dalai Lama. Otherwise, every local service, school, church, club and society is mentioned, with brief descriptions and contact details.

History

Crippen’s Mistress In 1910 Hawley Harvey Crippen was hanged for poisoning his wife and burying her mutilated remains in the cellar. He then made off across the Atlantic with his mistress, Ethel Le Neve, dressed as a boy. Most people know of Crippen; but few people know that Ethel came from Diss. She was born in 1883 in a cottage which still stands, much altered, in Bryar’s Lane, off Victoria Road. She was baptized in Diss church by the Revd. C.R. Manning and was one of the children of Walter and Clara Neave. (The Le Neve was a later addition of her own.) Her father worked as a railway clerk. Ethel was a tomboy and liked climbing trees, playing leapfrog and dressing as a boy, something prophetic of her later life. She had a frog foot deformity and suffered in learning to walk properly. She lived in Diss until she was about seven. By her twenties we find her working as typist in London. She was something of a hypochondriac and, because of her habitual response to being asked how she was, earned the nickname ‘Not Very Well Thank You’. Her health and general well-being improved greatly when the unhappily married and henpecked Crippen started taking an interest in her. He was an American medical man from Michigan and came to manage the firm where she worked. Ethel became his mistress. Crippen’s wife was of Polish, German and Russian extraction but called herself Cora or Belle Elmore. This was her stage name as a would-be music hall artiste. She took lovers and gave Crippen a hard time at home. At some point, it is said, he poisoned her, cut up her body and buried her in the cellar. He then moved Ethel in, causing much gossip. The police were notified and interviewed Crippen. At first he said his wife had died in America, then that she had left him. All might have been well if he had stayed put. But he and Ethel took a boat to Antwerp and then to Canada. Returning to the house, the police found that they had gone. Human remains were found in the cellar.

HISTORY

The fugitives’ flight was headline news when Captain Kendall of the Montrose became suspicious of ’Mr. and Master Robinson’. He sent a message to London, making history as the first time a criminal had been apprehended using wireless. A detective boarded a faster ship, Crippen was arrested, tried and hanged. Ethel was tried as an accessory after the fact but acquitted. How much she knew we will never know. But the whole case has taken on an even greater fascination since DNA has shown that the remains in the cellar were not Cora Crippen. Diss Town Guide 2010-2012

Friends In High Places Linguist, mathematician, intrepid traveller, Thomas Manning was a remarkable man. He was the son of the first of the dynasty of Manning rectors, who ran Diss church for 138 years. From the time of the American War of Independence to the First World War, four Mannings held the living, one after the other. Being in a school play about the Orient may have inspired Thomas to devote his life to studying Chinese, with dreams of going there. There was no way of studying Chinese at Cambridge University where he was a student. So he went to Paris. There he was so highly regarded that, when we went to war with France, Manningâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s exit visa was personally signed by Napoleon. Essayist Charles Lamb was among Manningâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s many distinguished friends. He went to India, hoping to go on from there to Peking, but was thwarted by red tape and lack of help from the British government. So, in 1811, he set off, with just a manservant, across the Himalayas. His journal is not a classic of travel literature, making little of the wonderful vistas he must have seen. But he certainly got cold, wet and flea-ridden. He never reached Peking; but he was the first European to reach the fabled city of Lhasa in Tibet. There, on the roof of the world, at the magical Potala Palace, he met the Dalai Lama, a seven year old lad. The little boy was fascinated by the Englishman with the long, black beard. Manning would survive a shipwreck before coming back to England. His exploits were unknown until his journal was discovered many years later Former solicitor Robert Manning, who still lives in Diss, is a direct descendant of Thomas Manning.

Local Government Diss Town Council Diss Town Council is the most local tier of Local Government which provides services for the residents of Diss and surrounding areas, with a catchment area of between 20,000 – 50,000 population. Diss is a thriving market town with a bustling market every Friday, a Farmers’ Market on the second Saturday in the month, flea markets and antique fairs. It also has an auction house and a unique selection of independent shops in our hidden shopping courtyards – all complemented by our unique Mere, a four acre lake in the centre of the town, bordered by the Park. 13 elected members make up the Town Council, led by the Town Mayor, administered by the Town Clerk. The Town Council meets in the Council Chamber at the Corn Hall on the third Wednesday every two months. It operates a number of committees to oversee its many responsibilities. One of the Town Council’s roles is to lobby the District Council, County Council and central Government to endeavour to achieve a high level of service from these authorities relevant to the needs of local people. It also has responsibility for the majority of public spaces in the town, including the Park, the Mere, the Market Place, the Corn Hall, the Cemetery, St. Mary’s Churchyard, Fair Green, Rectory Meadow and the Sports Ground, among others. The Town Council also runs the Council Information Centre, a one-stop shop for all issues relating to the three tiers of Local Government – Town Council, District Council and County Council. Council office hours are 9.30am to 4.00pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday and 9.30am to 3.00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

In July 2009 the Town Council was accredited as a Quality Council by the National Association of Local Councils. This demonstrates that the Town Council is considered to be professionally run and managed and increases its profile with the higher tier authorities. As a Quality Council Diss could take on additional responsibilities if it is considered that this will be of benefit to the town. Norfolk County Council Norfolk County Council is a top rated, 4 star local authority. County Hall is in Martineau Lane, Norwich, but it operates from many offices across the county. NCC has responsibility for all the major services within the county including education, social services, economic development, the fire service, trading standards, highways and road maintenance. It also works with a wide variety of other partners, for instance the NHS, to ensure the needs of all its residents are met. South Norfolk Council South Norfolk is a growing district with an ambitious district council and a hard-working people to match. It is home to world-class concerns and business sites like the Norwich Research Park, Group Lotus, Hethel Engineering Centre, the University of East Anglia and one of the country’s top-performing hospitals - the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital Trust. Indeed, Lotus just recently announced plans to restart its Formula One racing team...and have picked South Norfolk as its future base, with all that means for jobs and wealth in the local community. The world-renowned Genome Analysis Centre has also chosen to base itself at the Research Park. 12

Norwich, the Broads, the coast and stunning Waveney Valley are close by, and the villages and market towns, particularly Diss, are bustling and beautiful places to visit and stay. Diss is growing with new affordable housing, and visionary plans for great new amenities just south of the town centre. Transport links from the district to London and elsewhere are strong, with top performing schools nearby, popular leisure facilities, good local affordable housing and thriving small to medium sized businesses. These are surviving and even thriving despite one of the worst recessions in living memory. Unemployment may have risen steeply, but it is still well below the national average. South Norfolk people live longer are generally healthy, robust, self-reliant and positive. They are recognised as among the best and most generous volunteers at local sports and leisure clubs. In a recent survey of areas across England, people in South Norfolk were questioned alongside thousands of others. The district scored strongly, and in some areas among the best in England, for people treating each other with respect, for a strong sense of belonging, and for the opportunity to influence local decisions. Frenze Beck Frenze Beck is a superb habitat for some of South Norfolkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most important species and can be found on the western bank of the River Frenze on the outskirts of Diss. The 1.5 hectares of reedbeds and ponds, with broadleaf trees, hedgerows and scrub zones was created in 2003 and is managed by South Norfolk Council. Boardwalks, bridges and viewing screens make it easy for visitors to catch glimpses of the many species attracted to the site, including Barn Owls, Reed Warblers, otters and field voles. During the summer many dragonflies can be seen darting around the pond catching small insects. This beautiful wetland paradise is popular with families, school children and visitors and provides the perfect environment to see a wide range of wildlife in its natural surroundings.

Emergency Services Diss Ambulance Service The Ambulance Service is based in Owen Road on the Vinces Road Industrial Estate. It is manned 24 hours a day on a rota system. The managers head a team of highly skilled personnel, including ambulance paramedics and technicians, who serve an area of about 465 square miles in South Norfolk and North Suffolk. It is equipped with first line and rapid response vehicles, kitted out with the latest resuscitation instruments, as well as two Patient Transport Service ambulances. The East of England Ambulance NHS Trust, of which Diss is a part, has headquarters at Hellesdon, Norwich, where control co-ordinates requests from patients, doctors and others who have emergency requirements. Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service (Diss) Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service is divided into three areas. These are then sub-divided into smaller clusters and Diss is part of cluster 2 in Central area. The Station Manager is Jim Belcher who is based at Bethel Street Fire Station Norwich. Diss Fire Station is in Park Road and has a staff of 20 retained personnel. The Officer in charge is Watch Manager Karl Hain. Training takes place every Wednesday evening and at any other time deemed necessary. Retained personnel have a primary employment elsewhere but are highly trained and carry a pager by which they are alerted and report to the station within minutes. Based at the station are 2 fire engines. These are a Water Tender Ladder and a Rescue Pump. The Rescue Pump carries similar equipment to the Water Tender Ladder for dealing with fires, flooding and hazardous materials incidents but carries more specialised equipment for dealing with Road Traffic Collisions. This includes air bags for lifting, a winch for pulling and powerful cutting and spreading tools (jaws of life) for dismantling vehicles. Diss is also a core station in Norfolk involved in the National Resilience program put together by the Government after the 9/11 attacks in New York. In the event of a major terrorist CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear) attack on the country, the Incident Response Unit from Hethersett along with the core stations could be mobilised to any part of the country for the purpose of ‘Mass Decontamination’ of the general public. Attached to the station are the Diss Fire Cadets aged from 13 to 18. They meet every Tuesday for training and also take part in community activities. The cadet leaders are Crew Manager Mark Waterfield and Fire-fighter Paul Leeder. Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service is committed to making Norfolk safer and currently offers free ‘Home Fire Risk Checks’ where by a member of the service will call to your home by appointment and offer fire safety advice and if necessary fit free smoke alarms. Diss Police Station The Public Enquiry Office is open: Monday-Thursday: 8.30am-4.30pm and Friday: 8.30am-4pm. Outside the opening hours of the Public Enquiry Office there are police officers on patrol across the neighbourhood, please use the external telephone at the police station. Diss has 24/7 police cover with response officers working closely with the Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) to tackle crime. The NPT deals with local crime and works in partnership with communities and other agencies to understand and address local problems. Inspector Stuart Chapman, leads Diss NPT. Cittaslow Diss Cittaslow (Slow City or town), formed in Italy in 1999, has its origins in the Slow Food movement which was formed to counteract fast food restaurants. Cittaslow aims to preserve and enhance the traditional way of life and the unique character of market towns. Diss Town Council together with the Diss Community Partnership participated in a pilot study on Cittaslow carried out in 2005 by the East of England Development Agency. Following Aylsham, in March 2006 Diss was awarded Cittaslow status by the Board of Cittaslow UK. Diss Cittaslow is managed by a committee, which is led by Diss Town Council. This committee is made up in a similar way to the South Norfolk Alliance in that its members include not only town councillors, but also representatives of South Norfolk Council and community organizations, including the Diss Community Partnership and Diss Business Forum. Promotion and support for Cittaslow is incorporated in the South Norfolk Community Strategy 2007. Funding has been obtained from the EU led Leader+ programme for projects to maintain and improve the attractiveness of Diss as a market town by attracting tourists and supporting local business and promoting employment. Diss Community Partnership Diss Community Partnership (DCP) has only one purpose: to improve, in all possible ways, the quality of life of everyone who lives in or around the town. The partnership is a membership organisation and tries to promote the ideas and interests of local people. It is bottom up rather than top down. Launched in 2002, and originally called the Diss and District Development Partnership, DCP works together with statutory, voluntary and community bodies within the town. It is legally recognised as a “Community Interest Company”, and it is registered as such at Companies House. The partnership has no religious or political axes to grind, and although it seeks to be financially successful, no member can gain any financial benefit. Everyone who plays any part does so voluntarily. The partnership sometimes gives grants to enable community groups to tackle practical projects – setting up a local film society, for example – but does not seek to take control. DCP tries to encourage groups within the community to do things for themselves and to give them a voice, which might otherwise not be heard. The partnership has been particularly interested in campaigns and projects associated with local food and a sustainable way of living. Diss Farmers’ Market has been consistently supported as have festivals celebrating local food and drink. Among the biggest and most successful projects which DCP has supported have been festivals celebrating aspects of the town’s history. In 2004, for example, a wide range of events was organised to commemorate the 500th anniversary of John Skelton’s appointment as Rector of St. Mary’s parish church. Skelton was tutor to the young Henry VIII and an unusual poet. More recently, the partnership gave strong backing to lectures, debates, dancing and exhibitions to mark the bi-centenary of the death of Thomas Paine, the great 18th century radical thinker and writer who, as a young man, worked for a time in Diss. The partnership likes to use email for communicating with members and organising events, but we encourage membership irrespective of whether people are on-line. DissConnected.Net is a website where people can create the content and local community groups can have their own pages without the need for any programming skills. The partnership has some real expertise in this field.

Working jointly with Diss Town Council, the partnership played a central role in delivering a programme of projects around Cittaslow. This is an international campaign that focuses on the importance of quality of life and everything local. For example, Cittaslow encourages people to care about and protect what makes their town distinctive, including looking after the environment, local heritage and traditions, promoting locally made goods and sustainable tourism. Diss is one of only half a dozen towns in the UK to have won Cittaslow status. For two years, the partnership ran the Cittaslow Resource Centre in the centre of Diss, mainly to showcase Cittaslow, but also to act as a place where people could drop in, browse the website, access training, or become a volunteer. The partnership is always pleased to welcome new members and volunteers. Diss Corn Hall Managed by The Diss Corn Hall Trust since its relaunch in February 2010, the Corn Hall is a thriving arts and entertainment venue serving Diss, the population of the Waveney Valley and beyond. Slow Food Waveney Valley Slow Food is an international movement that believes that our current industrial food system is not sustainable and is not fit for purpose. It promotes a change to a system in which food production is much more local, smaller scale and fairer, and especially, is driven by flavour, nutrition, health (of people, animals, the environment) instead of profit. Slow Food Waveney Valley has organised a range of activities to promote this approach, including lots of community meals, farm visits, a supermarket debate, Food and Craft Fair on Fair Green, support for the Diss Farmers Market, Taste of Diss festival of local food. Diss Community Woodland Project The land for Quaker Wood was purchased by the Diss Community Woodland Project in 2008 and a programme of planting and improvement is being carried out by local volunteers. A few key principles are at the heart of the project: • An environmentally friendly approach using safe, traditional and non chemical methods. • Planting of native and naturalised trees and shrubs provide a traditional landscape and a diverse natural habitat. • Involvement of the local community in learning and sharing woodland skills. • Encouraging young people to learn and enjoy woodland ways. It will be several years before the final shape of the woodland will become apparent and many more years before it can be considered to be mature. Open areas will be maintained and the central pond will remain an important feature. Meanwhile volunteers are monitoring the wildlife and it is hoped that a pattern of more diverse species will emerge. Quaker Wood is open at all times for quiet enjoyment by local people and by the local wildlife. The project was instigated by Diss Rotary Club and it is affiliated to The Green Light Trust who bring communities to life by working with nature. It is run entirely by volunteers and the modest running costs are met entirely by voluntary contributions. This Charity is a combination of 13 small charities partly dating from 1618, originating with gifts of land or property from various benefactors to provide income for the benefit of poor persons in the Parish of Diss. Full details can be found on the Charity Commissioners’ Website. It is administered by seven trustees; the Rector of Diss, four nominated by the Town Council and two co opted by the other trustees. It has four almshouses and makes small grants to residents in the civic parish of Diss where assistance from public funds or other bodies is non-existent or inadequate. Museum Diss Museum is situated in the Market Place in a building called The Shambles, formerly two butchers' shops. There are a variety of displays, frequently changed, about the history of the town and area. Always on display are the Old Rectory Doll's House, old photos and jottings from the Memory Bank. Local firms like Cupiss, Aldrich, Anness and Gaze have all been featured. Panels in the windows depict significant characters and events from the town's past. Outreach activities include: talks to groups and schools, tours of the town (including a Murder Tour) and involvement in events like the Roydon Riots Centenary (1993), Skelton Festival (2004), Nelson Bi-centenary (2005), Betjeman Centenary (2006), Local History Festival (2007) and the Thomas Paine Bi-centenary (2009). Interest is promoted by regular columns in the local newspaper and community magazine. The museum is administered by a registered Charitable Trust and supported by Diss Town Council. In 2008 Accreditation was awarded by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council. Accreditation is the standards scheme for UK Museums, demonstrating commitment towards standards of management, services to users and collection care. The museum had previously gained Registration and also won a Gulbenkian Award for the greatest improvements achieved with limited resources. The day-to-day running of the museum is largely by volunteers. The Friends of Diss Museum provide stewards and financial support for special projects. The Borderhoppa This is a minibus for people living within North Suffolk and South Norfolk who find getting to places difficult. This could be because your village is not covered by a bus service, or because you have a mobility problem that makes travelling by bus difficult. It is wheelchair accessible and we pick up from your front door. You need to be a member to use it, and to book your journey at least 48 hours before you wish to travel. Times and routes depend on who else has booked! We also have a bus that is available to community and voluntary groups to hire, and may be able to provide a driver too. Community Health Services A wide variety of community health staff operate from the Health Centre, making local services available with minimum travelling time. A wide range of clinics is held at the Health Centre; while some staff (such as district nurses) also visit patients' own homes. Regular clinics include: foot health services, speech and language therapy for children and adults, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, dietetics, health education, cognitive behavioural therapy, baby clinic and breast feeding support (every Friday morning) . The nursing staff includes health visitors, midwives, a school health advisor, community nurses and psychiatric nurses. A social worker and parttime volunteer co-ordinator are also based at the Health Centre. The Friends of Diss Health Centre The Friends is a registered charity which provides equipment and amenities not normally supplied by the NHS for the patients of Diss Health Centre. The money to do so is generously provided by those who wish to show their gratitude for the care and attention they, or people close to them, have received from staff at the Health Centre. The Friends' committee includes local people and some staff members. Members receive regular newsletters and are invited to attend the charity's annual meeting. Family Medical Care at Night and Weekends Anglian Medical Care is the service for you and your family to use when you need urgent medical care at night and at weekends. If you need urgent medical care during the hours of 6.30pm to 8.00am Monday to Friday and 6.30pm Friday night to 8.00am Monday morning and on public and bank holidays, please ring your surgery, where you will be automatically transferred to the Anglian Medical Care call centre or receive recorded information giving you the contact number. Diss Day Centre Registered Charity No. 280572

The Centre now meets in very pleasant surroundings at the Denny Centre in Thomas Manning Road, Diss. This was the former Dennyholme residential home which now incorporates five sheltered dwellings and a social centre for the nearby sheltered bungalows. The Centre, which is supported by Norfolk County Council, takes people recommended by Social Services from Diss and the surrounding areas but can also accommodate a few paying members from time to time. Managed by a group of local people, it aims to promote the health and welfare of mainly elderly persons by providing a day centre for recreation, leisure activities and handicrafts for those people able to take part. A County ambulance with a lift collects people from Diss and the surrounding villages, although some who can travel by car arrive in taxis. Persons who wish to attend should first contact their GP or Social Services, preferably through Diss Health Centre (Tel: 644513). The Centre is open from 9am to 3pm on Mondays and Thursdays, except for Bank Holidays and the Christmas/New Year period. A cooked meal and light refreshments are provided at low cost. Entertainments are provided and outings take place from time to time. There is also a Christmas lunch, usually with entertainment. Hairdressing and shopping services are also provided. There are some paid staff but voluntary help is always appreciated, particularly for the pushing of wheelchairs or escorting members during outings. Denny Centre The Denny Centre is a community support centre for older people from Diss and the surrounding area. It is run by Age Concern Norfolk. Waveney Day Centre The Day Centre was established by Social Services and operates on Mondays and Thursdays (except Bank Holidays), from the Methodist Church Hall in Diss. Members are referred through their doctor or social worker. The Centre provides a meeting place for up to 23 members, aged 60 plus, to enjoy companionship, craft work, exercises and games. A cooked lunch is provided from the Denny Centre, as well as tea and biscuits during the morning and afternoon. A variety of entertainment is laid on. The day is from 10am to 2.00pm. Transport will be provided by social services where necessary. The only paid member of staff is the organizer, but the support of a valuable group of volunteers helps to run the Centre. The funds for such events are raised by twice monthly sales and raffles at the Centre. Any offers of help in any way are always welcome. British Heart Foundation Formed in 1985, the Diss & District branch has raised up to ÂŁ350,000. The branch has contributed items of cardiac care equipment to the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital and has helped with the provision of defibrillators to a number of local doctors' surgeries as well. The aims of the branch are to raise money for research and equipment, to create public awareness of the need for cardiac care and to give support and help to those with cardiac problems. Diss Hedgehog Advisory Service This is exactly what it says, a helpline that gives information and advice on hedgehogs. Leaflets are available on care, first aid, over wintering and raising babies â&#x20AC;&#x201C; all free of charge. There is a 24 hour contact helpline; and hedgehog nesting boxes are for sale. Diss Acoustic Music Club Every Tuesday evening from 8.00 until 11.00 we meet in the schoolroom at The Friends Meeting House, Frenze Road, Diss to sing and play all types of music provided it is acoustic. No electrified instruments are allowed. This is, along with adults-only, one of our few rules. Another is that you leave your "ego" outside the door. We always encourage each other. South Norfolk Youth Symphonic Band Registered Charity No. 1116270 The band, based in Diss, was formed in 1974 and its motto is ‘Music is Fun’. We accept any woodwind, brass or percussion player, aged between eight and 23, irrespective of ability; and we do not hold auditions. We are based, and rehearse, at the Diss Resource Base on Shelfanger Road on a Tuesday night between 7.00 and 9.00pm. Playing with the band gives members the encouragement to continue to study and enjoy their music making; and to provide that purpose for the hard work required. The band also bridges the gap between school and adulthood. Some professional musicians, who have graduated through the band, may otherwise have given up before making music their career. We are completely independent and self-financing. Every year the band performs many concerts, raising money for charities and other organisations. The band has strong links with the Corps of Army Music and the Royal Marines Band Service. It holds a residential weekend with one of the leading army bands; and a weekend with the training band of the Royal Marines School of Music. We also organise tours, trips and events. In July 2006 we were awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. This recognises and rewards excellence in voluntary activities carried out by groups in the community. We offer the opportunity for like-minded young musicians to come together to perform and play. The band is SAFE accredited and is an accredited Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme assessor. Waveney Choir The Waveney Choir, which has been established in Diss since 1970, sings music of all types and age and gives recitals throughout Norfolk and Suffolk, in aid of charities and church funds. Our membership is large (70 plus), and is drawn from a wide area and ranges in age from 18 to 90! All new members are welcomed, whatever their experience and there are no auditions necessary. Waveney Springs The Waveney Springs Art Collective is a group of artists and makers living and working in an approximately 10 mile radius of Diss. Newly formed in 2008, Waveney Springs hopes to bridge the Norfolk/Suffolk boundary by including artists from both sides of the Upper Waveney Valley. The Art Trail, normally runs for two weekends in September, and gives a chance for the artists to show members of the public around their studios and explain their various approaches to their art. Wingfield Barns Wingfield Barns Arts Centre is up and running again with a programme of music, both classical and jazz. Visual arts exhibitions, both group shows and individual artists. We will be hosting the annual Wingfield Art Awards for schools in Suffolk. We have a new digital cinema with a series of classic films. A new pottery studio where courses will be held and individuals can make and fire their work. Drama features very heavily. Youth Activities Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Services Diss Youth Resource Base Norfolk County Council Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Services has a Youth Work team based in Diss, from where they operate a service for young people in the Southern Area of Norfolk. For 11 to 25 year olds, with priority age 13 to 19, they offer: life and social skills; Duke of Edinburgh Award; mobile van service to villages; group and individual support, such as young carers and young parents; evening clubs; opportunities to take part in specialist projects, including environment work and residentials; outdoor education; and a three week summer project for 12 to 16 year olds. A number of specialist and adult groups have adopted the building as a a base, including the South Norfolk Youth Symphonic Band, Keep Fit (Tums, Bums and Thighs), Judo and Kuk Sool Won groups. Clubs & Societies Diss & District Allotment Holders Association Diss & District Allotment Holders Association is based in Louies Lane and currently has 74 members and a waiting list for plots. The annual subscription for a plot (approx. 30’ x 45’) is currently £17 and is reviewed yearly. This includes affiliation to the National Society of Allotment & Leisure Gardeners which provides advice and guidance to the Association as well as the availability of a cheap seed scheme. There is an on-site shop selling a variety of garden supplies, which is run by committee members and plot holders and is open regularly to members throughout the growing season. Old Dyssean Society In September 2000 more than 60 former pupils of Diss Secondary Grammar School attended a reunion at Montgomerie Hall, Diss to discuss the renaissance of what is now called The Old Dyssean Society. The main aims are to bring former pupils of all ages together, and circulate news via the publication of newsletters twice annually. Dennis Meadows, an evacuee from Lowestoft, who attended the school for a short time, was the prime mover in the revival, and is currently Founder VicePresident. Diane Walden is Chairman. Reg Wright, a pupil from 1936-42 and later a teacher at the school, is the elected President. The annual subscription is £5, and reunions are held in late September at Diss Golf Club. There are members all over the world, including the USA, Australia, France and South Africa. New members are welcome. Diss & District Probus Club The purpose of the Diss and District Probus Club, formed in 1975, is to provide a meeting point for retired professional and business men and their ladies, resident in Diss and District, who desire increased social contact and the opportunity of meeting others in similar circumstances. The club is nonpolitical and non-sectarian. Luncheon meetings are held on the third Monday of each month. Normally a speaker is invited to address the members after lunch. Coffee mornings are held for members and their ladies on the first Wednesday of each month; and outings to places of interest are arranged. We currently have vacancies. The main school building has six classrooms, Food Tech area, a resource/ intervention quiet room, a large hall and servery, a staffroom and two offices. All classrooms have storage shelves, benched computers, interactive whiteboards, a variety of IT equipment, a sink, altro and carpeted floor areas and an outside fire door, giving access to outdoor learning space. The Nursery is a separate purpose-built unit. It has a large activity/playroom, a quiet area, kitchen and cloakroom. The outside playground is securely fenced, with gates providing access to the field and Reception areas. The school grounds consist of a large playing field, hard playground with sheds for storage of outside play equipment for Reception children, planters (maintained by the children) and seated shelters. There is also an adventure playground, play hut and train and a wildlife area. Extra trees have been planted to afford shade. Much use is made of the outside environment for all kinds of investigations, observations and physical activities. The school is very active in promoting walking to school and has been awarded Travel Plan awards every year for the last five years. We hold Healthy School status in addition to the Activemark, Arts Council accreditation, Basic Skills mark and ICT accreditation. The Children’s Centre Building was completed in 2007 which serves as a hub to local services, supporting many families within the area. In the main school there is two form entry. Cricket - Diss & District Cricket Club Diss C.C. is one of Norfolk’s top clubs with 2 teams playing in the Norfolk Cricket Alliance. The 1st X1 play in the Premier Division. The club also runs 4 junior sides : U -11, U -13, U-15 and U-17. We have excellent, highly qualified coaches who are all CRB checked and many of our young players have progressed to represent the county. The club's first team plays in the Premier Division of the Ridgeon League, the reserves play in the Ridgeon Reserve League and the Under-18 team in the Ridgeons Youth League. Diss Golf Club provides a picturesque heath and parkland 18 holes golf course, that offers interesting but challenging golf for all standards of player. The holes range from the scenic but difficult 468 yard par 4 13th Hole to the pretty, 15th at 146 yards. Rugby - Diss Rugby Club Diss Rugby Club was founded in 1958. The Club has its own ground 'Mackenders', at Bellrope Lane, Roydon - with excellent clubhouse and multigym facilities. The club runs four senior sides and a Veterans XV, with the First XV playing in the London Divisions of the RFU National League. There is a highly successful junior and youth section, providing rugby for all ages from 6-19, which is producing players who have gained representative honours at County, Divisional and National levels in recent seasons. Leicester and England player Dan Hipkiss spent his formative years at Diss RFC. Four young players have played for England whilst still at Diss. Snooker - Diss Cue Club Since 2008, Diss Cue Club has been housed in a new, purpose designed building. More than just a Snooker Club, there are six Pool tables, including two of the American variety. Open for twelve hours a day, seven days a week the club has a light and airy lounge where members can relax. Meals and snacks are available and in addition the club has a licensed bar. Squash - Heywood Sports & Racquet Club Situated at Walcot Road, next to Diss High School, the club has three modern courts, one with a glass back, a fully licenced bar, a floodlit astroturf pitch and floodlit tennis courts. Swimming - Diss Swim & Fitness Centre (DSFC) Victoria Road, Diss. At this facility we have a variety of different activities to offer; both wet and dry side. The use of the wet side facilities are for the general public as well as the members, these include a 25m Main Pool, Learner Pool and newly refurbished sauna, steam room and spa bath. The Gym at the centre is for members only, but anyone is able to join, it is open daily and has a range of cardiovascular and resistance machines to offer as well as weight machines and a free weights area. We also have a GP Referral scheme, with sessions happening every Monday & Wednesday and an Over 60’s/GP Referral Aqua class on a Thursday afternoon. We have fully qualified Fitness Instructors on hand to provide a professional service to everyone; this includes a full induction of the gym equipment and a written exercise programme tailored just for you. DSFC is a centre that specialises in Water/Aqua Aerobics classes; these can be both high or low impact work-outs to music, the instructor will take you through the class showing different movements that can reduce the stress on muscles but will also show great results. Both swimming pools are open seven days a week, with daily Early Riser Sessions (6.30am – 8.45am), Adults Only Sessions taking place in the Main Pool and General Swimming taking place in both pools. Fun Sessions, for children and families, are on a Sunday afternoon, they include an inflatable and fun equipment for everyone’s enjoyment. We also run a very successful Swim School, boasting over 900 pupils. Children from the age of 3 months right through to club level can learn the basics of swimming, learn how to improve their techniques and they can also have an enjoyable and confidence building experience as well.

Whilst the school holidays are on we also run a children’s holiday programme with activities that include kayaking, water safety and Brownies & Cubs badges. Diss Otters Swimming Club Based at Diss Swimming Pool, the club was formed in 1988 to promote competition amongst young swimmers and ‘Masters’. It has grown in strength and depth since then and regularly has swimmers competing at county and regional level. The ‘Masters’ or adults group is one of the largest in Norfolk. Swimmers of all ages and abilities have the opportunity to improve or learn new strokes, enter competitions or just keep fit.
