The Ladies Of Wymondham Players

Wymondham Lions Club Lions Clubs are an international network of men and women who work together to answer the needs that challenge communities across the world.

Bare all for Star Throwers. Lions are …… Wymondham Players celebrate their 60th anniversary in June 2013. To mark this milestone, they have chosen to perform Calendar Girls by Tim Firth, which will be on stage in Central Hall, Wymondham, 17th - 20th April 2013. The play has been released to amateur companies for 18 months only. The license to perform purchased by amateur companies will raise funds for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, the charity of the original Calendar Girls. It seemed a natural development when the ladies of Wymondham Players mooted the idea of also doing a calendar. The idea soon took hold and in no time volunteers were signing up; the thoughts of many being; “if I’m not gonna get them out now, when am I?” Not wanting to copy the original Calendar Girls, the Wymondham Players calendar depicts the process of putting a play together, from January’s publicity shot

through auditions and rehearsals, to December’s after show party. Under the creative eye of photographer Sarah Bush, surrounded by appropriate props and fortified by large glasses of fizz, the ladies soon abandoned their bathrobes and bared all. Profits from the sale of the calendar will be donated to Star Throwers, the locally based cancer support and therapy centre, which is close to the hearts of many of those appearing in the calendar. The calendar, which is £5, also features a bonus picture for January 2014, but you have to buy a copy for this to be revealed. The calendar is available from various Wymondham outlets including; Geo Reeve, Market Street, Wardrobes, Fairland Street and The Book Fountain, Whartons Court or online at www.wymondhamplayers.org.uk/calendar

• Members of the world’s largest and most active service club organisation. • Men and women who believe that by working together they will accomplish far more than would be possible as individuals. • Members committed to solving worldwide health and social problems, and who realise that solutions are possible when every Lions Club participates. • People who cherish the fellowship of their own Club, but who also feel a close kinship with Lions in over 200 countries throughout the world. • Individuals dedicated to maintaining the highest ethical and moral standards in their Club - and in their personal lives.

• People who are serious about their commitment to humanitarian service, but have fun along the way. We cover all costs from our own dues, ensuring that all donated funds go to the causes. Transparency and accountability operate at every level; in fact, The Financial Times has ranked Lions Clubs International Foundation the “best among nongovernment organisations worldwide with which to work”. Wymondham Lions Club welcomes visitors and is actively seeking new members to help in their work. They meet at The Feathers PH, Town Green, Wymondham, NR18 0PN at 8pm on the 2nd Wednesday and last Monday of each month (bank holidays excepted). Regal Experience For its special Christmas show the Regal Experience Group will be presenting the 1951 version of Scrooge on Sunday December 9th (2.30pm) at the Wymondham Ex-Services’ Club (Regal Cinema). Generally regarded as the best screen adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic tale A Christmas Carol, the movie tells the story of how miserly Ebenezer Scrooge is transformed by the ghost of his partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmases past, present and future. The inimitable Alastair Sim in the title role is well supported by a stellar British cast, including Jack Warner, Kathleen Harrison, Mervyn Johns and Michael Hordern. Supporting will be Big Business (1929), in which Laurel and Hardy are Christmas tree

salesmen who get into “another fine mess”, and other festive material. Tickets for the show are available from Simply Cards, Market Street, Wymondham, and from Maureen Dodman (01953 605593) or Michael Armstrong (01953 603246).

Christmas And Hearing Loss Karen Finch, Audiologist and Managing Director of The Hearing Care Centre tells us that we must be considerate of those with hearing loss over the festive period. As you begin to gather with your beloved friends and family this holiday season, please remember that not everyone at the party may be able to fully join in. Hearing loss is very common as we get older, one in six people in the UK in fact, and social gatherings can create challenges for those with hearing impairment. The more that hearing loss is ignored, the more it can lead to feelings of isolation and depression. Most of us will experience significant hearing loss as we get older. You may become aware of it in busy environments, when there are many voices and other background noises present - like at Christmas. Imagine being in a room where you’re unable to hear what other people are saying. If someone makes a joke and you miss the punch-line, you will no longer feel part of the group.

December 2012

If you know someone is having problems hearing, there are several things you can do to help: • Make eye contact and speak clearly shouting is not necessary because that just distorts your voice • Keep background noise and music to a minimum • When at the dinner table seat them in the middle so they can see people’s faces and hear what they are saying • Keep rooms well lit to making it easier to lip read and see facial expressions • Sit with the background noise behind them or better still remove all unnecessary background noise if you can. • With some tact bring up the idea of having a hearing test after Christmas and see whether wearing a hearing aid may benefit them

My Christmas wish is that we could somehow get across the message that it’s OK to have a hearing loss and that this is no more stigma attached to wearing hearing aids that in wearing a pair of glasses.

Thetford Players Over 40 people from as far as Swaffham and Kings Lynn made the pilgrimage to Thetford. to join the Thetford Players Historical Character Walk where Thomas Paine English-American political activist, author, political theorist, revolutionary and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States - met and guided the party around the most historic parts of Thetford. The Walk started at what is now known as Whitehart Street (formerly Bridgegate Street) where Paine was born in 1737, ending at King’s House in King Street, fittingly by the golden statue of Paine. Many characters that played a part in the town’s remarkable history were introduced along the Walk and shared enlightening factual stories. Characters included Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Radcliffe (former owner of the Bell Inn), Father John Brame of St. Mary’s Priory (who famously chronicled

the miraculous healing powers of the Priory’s statue of the Virgin Mary in 1414), Housekeeper of Duleep Singh (the last Maharaja of the Sikh Empire and friend of Queen Victoria), Susannah Gill (sister of Garner and Thomas Gill, merchants and joint tenants of the Water Mill, 1775-1865), Susannah Holmes (wife of Henry Cabell, one of the founding families of Australia), Sir Robert Williamson (MP in 1669 and great benefactor of Thetford) and perhaps the most famous of all – Boudica, leader of the British Iceni tribe. The wheelchair-friendly round walk lasted approximately 90 minutes and will be repeated throughout summer 2013. Further details of the 2013 dates will be added to www.thetfordplayers.co.uk/

Is Your Adviser Independent? Craft Fayre Was A Great Success From 31st December 2012, there are changes afoot for the financial services industry that have been brought about by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) Retail Distribution Review (RDR) and every financial adviser will have to be classified as independent or restricted. Firms that provide independent advice must make recommendations based on a ‘comprehensive and fair analysis of the relevant market’ and provide ‘unbiased and unrestricted’ advice. Firms that cannot fully meet these requirements will be deemed to be offering restricted advice. We believe that being independent should give our clients a better chance of getting the most suitable product for them, from the most suitable company. We are currently independent financial advisers and from next year we will remain independent financial advisers. One of the other changes brought about by RDR is that all advisers will have to have an enhanced minimum level of qualification. This higher level of qualification and the changes by RDR may result in several advisers leaving the industry and the high

street banks are having to rethink whether they will continue to offer financial advice to their customers.

At ML Financial Associates all the advisers belong to the financial services professional body - the Personal Finance Society (PFS). We also adhere to the Chartered Insurance Institute code of ethics. Yes we are independent and will remain independent and all our advisers DO already have the enhanced qualifications. We feel these matters are important to give our clients the most suitable advice, with products from the entire market. Ask your adviser if they are ready with all the changes and enhanced qualifications, if not please talk to us.

A craft fayre held at the North Wymondham Community Centre on October 28th proved to be a great success. Over £300 was raised for the refurbishment of the hall in Lime Tree Avenue and further events are planned. Organiser, Margaret Ferrari said:

Bereaved children and families in crisis are set to benefit from a barrow load of food which was wheeled through the streets of Diss recently.

“Both charities are very close to our hearts and, with Christmas just around the corner, we thought this was an opportunity to lend our support,” said Rosedale’s Simon Beckett-Allen. The Diss-based Waveney Foodbank is collecting donations for distribution to local people in crisis, while Nelson’s Journey supports bereaved children. And now Rosedale is urging local people to back two

further Christmas appeals. Soon, for the first time, Rosedale’s six funeral homes will open their doors as collection points for the Salvations Army’s Toys ‘n Tins Appeal, which helps over 4,000 people across Norfolk each year by providing food and gift hampers. It’s also countdown time to the dispatch of shoeboxes, filled with gifts and goodies for underprivileged youngsters across the world. Operation Christmas Child is the UK’s largest children’s Christmas Appeal, reaching out to children as far afield as Africa, Central Asia and Eastern Europe. “When you see how much pleasure just one small box can bring to a child it’s very humbling. With stacks of shoeboxes ready to go, there’s still plenty of time for people to get involved,” urged Simon Beckett-Allen. Further information on Rosedale’s Christmas charity drive is available by calling Richard Green on 01379 640810. Leader of Breckland Council, William Nunn said; “This is a great opportunity for people - both young and old - from right across the district, to show their appreciation and support for the work of one of our regiments and at the same time remember those who will not be returning. It is expected that a large crowd, including family and friends of many of those marching, will be lining the route.”

Ex-Wife Responsible For Own Financial Arrangements The courts have recently been asked to rule in a case in which the ex-wife of a wealthy businessman sought an increase in the financial provision she received from her ex-husband following their divorce. She had received a lump sum divorce settlement of almost £1 million as well as periodical payments for three years. She later rearranged her affairs, taking out a mortgage on her property for £100,000 and using the money to buy an investment bond, interest on which was rolled up over the term rather than paid as it arose. She subsequently applied to the court to be awarded a capital sum instead of the periodical payments she was due to receive.

The district judge awarded her a further £456,000. Her ex-husband challenged the decision. Among other objections to the judge’s calculations, he argued that remortgaging the house and using the £100,000 to buy the bond was solely his ex-wife’s decision and the judge’s calculations, which included £500 per month to cover payment of the mortgage, were therefore in error. The Court of Appeal agreed.

In her submissions, she claimed that her expenses included the cost of repaying the mortgage, but she did not include any income from the bond.

Calendar Girls Take Over Jobs For The Boys! Wives of the Light Dragoons, who are based in Swanton Morley, have created a charity Calendar to raise money for the Light Dragoons Colonel’s Appeal. The Calendar features a series of amusing photos of themselves wearing army kit and running the army camp whilst the soldiers are away. The women, whose ages range from 20s to 40s and have no previous modelling experience, are contributing towards the Charity which aims to give enduring support to Light Dragoons wounded on operations or in regimental service, to their families, and to the families of those killed on duty. One of the calendar’s campaign organisers, Justine Plant, whose husband Sam is the Commanding Officer of the Light Dragoons, said the models, who have 51 children between them, were inspired by their husbands’ bravery. “As wives of the Light Dragoons we are more than aware of the risks our husbands take when deployed, and as a small, family regiment where we all know each other, when any of our soldiers are injured it affects us all. For this reason the Light Dragoons Colonel’s Appeal is close to our hearts. We wanted to do something to show our support. A group of 29 of us have got together to produce an amusing - we hope! - calendar which depicts us running the army camp while our husbands are away. We have had a great deal of fun putting it together, and hope people will

December 2012

support us by buying it - and that they will enjoy what we have produced!” The calendar has been a totally Light Dragoon affair, with ex Light Dragoon Chris Jelf, now a professional photographer, giving up his time to take the photos. In addition Jenni Sime, a Light Dragoon wife, who runs her own graphic design company, donated her time to make the calendar look fantastic. The Charity Calendar has also been generously sponsored by local businesses, which will enable all the money raised from the sale of the Calendar to go directly to the Colonel’s Appeal. The 2013 Calendars cost £5 and from mid November and will be available from various outlets across Breckland including Darbys in Swanton Morley, the Village Store in Swanton Morley, Tescos, The Tavern and Birds of Dereham. They can also be bought on-line via the Light Dragoons Colonel’s Appeal website: www.ldcolonelsappeal.com The wives will also be selling the calendars at the Light Dragoons Welcome Home Parade on 5th December in Dereham. National Cat Pain Awareness Month At The Old Golfhouse Veterinary Group Cat Pain - Spotting the signs… According to Veterinary experts, there are many domesticated cats currently suffering with ailments such as arthritis and due to cats’ independent nature and athleticism owners are not aware that their cat may be in pain.

• Reduced Activity - your cat may slow down, walk slightly stiffly or sleep a lot more

and therefore put him/her on the best possible treatment for his/her grade of arthritis.

• Changes in grooming habits - Has your cats coat deteriorated - started to become matted or scruffy?

Evolution has programmed cats not to show any signs of pain in order to protect themselves from predators.

• Changes in temperament - Has your cat’s attitude changed? Has he/she become less tolerant of people or more withdrawn?

At The Old Golfhouse Veterinary Group we now provide Acupuncture treatment in both dogs and cats. Acupuncture has proved extremely beneficial in animals and the results that we have seen have

Cats are agile creatures and can therefore hide mobility difficulties caused by arthritis, for instance, unlike dogs, cats with arthritis don’t limp, the warning signs that cats are in pain are very subtle. These signs can include; • Reduced mobility - your cat may become hesitant to jump onto your lap/furniture/through a cat-flap.

December 2012

Veterinary technology is becoming increasingly advanced every day, which means that there are more treatment options out there for our beloved pets. There are several treatments available for long-term use in cats with arthritis and if you are at all concerned that your cat is suffering from any of the above symptoms please contact your vet immediately who can assess the level of pain/arthritis your cat may have

been incredibly positive, especially in arthritic cases. Acupuncture releases endorphins which relieve pain. It can also stimulate the bodies own healing and defence mechanisms. Patient’s mobility has improved and acupuncture is well tolerated, most patients even seem to enjoy it and become very relaxed.

A balanced diet and physical activity contribute to a higher quality of life and enhanced independence as you age. Opt for sweet potatoes instead of white potatoes and grilled meat instead of fried.

Mitsubishi L200 Trojan Double Cab By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist. IF YOU are a tradesman, or you simply want to get your hands on an affordable, tough as old boots, grown up version of a Tonka truck, then Mitsubishi’s L200 Trojan is for you. It’s practical, it’s comfortable and with 4x4 ability it’ll get you on and off mudridden building sites or farm fields with utter ease. Not only that, the pickup does what it says on the tin - it’ll be your best friend when it comes to picking up loads and, when the cargo area is full, it’s the perfect vehicle for lugging a laden trailer around. The L200’s looks aren’t bad either. It’s mean and handsome - in a rough sort of way. The double cab means there’s enough room for four, so when the Trojan isn’t tackling off road areas or hauling heavy-duty merchandise around, it’s a handy family motor, especially kitted out, as my demo was, with a luscious leather interior. Behind the wheel, the Mitsubishi is slightly unwieldy. It takes some getting used to - in the sense that you can’t just takes bends with one finger on the wheel - as you might lazily do with a normal family car. No, this pickup will take corners wide if you don’t discipline it. Also, be aware that the Trojan only

has five gears in normal rear wheel driving mode. Reverse is where sixth normally is - so it’s easy to go into gear-grating territory when you first drive it. Other than that, all controls are laid out in an ‘idiot’s guide’ fashion. Pace, although it’s not the first thing you think about when you buy a pickup, isn’t an issue on the L200. There’s a reason for this: the 2012/13 Trojan has had some improvements - such as 30 percent more clout, with an increase in engine power from 134 bhp to 173 bhp and 27 percent more torque. The result is that the Mitsubishi gathers pace like an angry rhino - when it does get rolling you feel it’s like an indestructible road-train. Good job, then, that the pickup has first-rate brakes to scrub off any unwanted speed. If you want individuality, forget it. The mighty Mitsubishi is available in two colours only; Aztec Red and Cosmos Black. But, seeing as the vehicle is largely aimed at supporting the UK’s recovering building, plumbing, electrician and agricultural markets, the L200 Trojan is a great option for business users who demand resilience, versatility and performance.

to maintaining boats, with dedicated products and techniques specially developed for the marine industry.

“They find that forecourt car washes simply don’t do the job properly and they are not prepared to let the cheap and cheerful hand wash merchants within a mile of their precious paintwork! They know that Autosheen uses only the highest standard of products - used by some of the world’s leading automotive manufacturers and not available to the public through high street retailers - and feel comfortable that their pride and joy is safe in my hands!”

“The winter season is a punishing time for cars and water craft,” Andy concludes.

“The weather can wreak real damage on untreated surfaces, so whether you are a car owner or a boat owner too, my message is that now is the perfect time to treat your vehicle for Christmas or treat a loved one to an Autosheen gift voucher!”

Andy - in common with all Autosheen valeting specialists - has been trained to IMI (Institute of Motoring Industries) Awards standards, and counts Norwich FC footballers amongst his many regular customers. He also now offers a brand new Aquasheen service, providing the same professional care and attention

Advice On Buying A Vehicle The following advice can help reduce the risk of buying a stolen vehicle. Step 2: Checking the vehicle’s registration certificate

Here are some tips to consider, but the final decision is your responsibility.

• Ask if the seller is the registered keeper and arrange to view the vehicle at the registered keeper’s address

Find out what you should look out for when you buy a used vehicle.

Thieves can alter the appearance of • Ask the seller for the registration number, a stolen vehicle and it’s paperwork to make and model of the vehicle make it look genuine. They can also forge documents. • Ask the seller for the expiry date of the tax disc, and the MOT test number Hold the Registration Certificate up to the light - there should be a ‘DVL’ watermark. • Check whether the vehicle has Remember, the Certificate is not proof of outstanding finance or has been stolen ownership. Make sure the seller has the or written off right to sell the vehicle, and the Certificate matches the vehicle’s details and all other Clocking documentation provided. • Be careful, some dishonest dealers pose as private sellers to offload unsafe and clocked cars

Step 3: Checking the vehicle

• Consider taking a qualified vehicle examiner with you. A number of companies provide this service if you don’t know anybody with sufficient knowledge of vehicles

Don’t buy the vehicle if the VIN has been tampered with or is missing.

Remember

Before buying a vehicle, check that the VIN and engine number match those on

the Registration Certificate - The VIN is recorded on a metal strip at the base of the windscreen, under the bonnet or beneath the carpet on the driver’s side. Exterior checks • Check the bodywork for a consistent paint finish - the paint should be the same shade all over the car; if not, it’s probably had some damage and a respray • Make sure the gaps between the panels are the same width - if not, the car could have been crashed and repaired • Check the doors and the boot open and close smoothly, and examine the rubber seals for paint - it could point to a re-spray • Press down carefully on the car at each corner and release; the car should return smoothly to its normal height - if it bounces before settling the suspension could need work

Advice On Buying A Vehicle Continued • Bubbling paintwork indicates rust and is most common around the wheel arches, bumpers and window frames - check everywhere, particularly areas regularly in contact with water

Under the bonnet

Inside the car

• Check for oil, water or other fluid leaks around the engine and other mechanical components, as well as on the ground underneath

• The mileage on the odometer inside the speedometer should be consistent with the advert and car’s documents

• Check the tyres and the spare wheel with a tread depth gauge, which are available from car accessory shops. The minimum legal tread depth is 1.6mm across the width of the tyre, but more is better

• Remove the engine oil dipstick, wipe it with a cloth and replace it. Remove it again and check the oil is on or around the ‘max’ level; the oil should be golden and free from debris.

• Make sure the tyres have even wear - more wear on one side of the tyre indicates the suspension or tracking alignment needs adjusting - it could also point to crash damage • If the car is a convertible, make sure the roof moves up and down smoothly and locks fully into place, check the material for tears, and make sure the rear window is free from cracks and discolouration

• Check the top of the engine (you may need to unclip the plastic engine cover first) and underneath the engine oil cap for a white, mayonnaise-like substance which could indicate a damaged engine head gasket and often-irreparable engine damage • Check the fluid levels for the engine coolant (large, often round tank with a screw cap filled with pink fluid) and brake fluid (small bottle, often attached at the rear of the engine bay) are at the correct indicated level when the engine is cool

• Check wear on the seats and steering wheel are consistent with the car’s mileage - high mileage cars will often show wear on the side bolsters and the steering wheel may have a shiny appearance

and steering wheel could mean the car’s airbags have been activated in a crash. If you’re buying a used vehicle from a private seller, dealer or auction house, make sure you know your consumer rights and do not make your decision until you have carried out all the relevant checks.

• Make sure everything works, including the air conditioning, all electric windows, sunroof, adjustable seats and even the fuel-filler and bonnet release • Look for damage to the steering column and ignition - damage could indicate the car has been stolen at some point • Check the seatbelts, the passenger side of the dashboard and the steering wheel cover - frayed seatbelts could indicate they’ve been activated in a crash and damage to the dashboard
