ADDRESS

For me, June and July are synonymous with summer festivals, notably the Forest Live series of outdoor concerts held in countryside locations across the UK. Topping the bill at Thetford Forest this summer, pop legend Rick Astley is gearing up for a night to remember. You can read our preview feature on page 15. What’s more, this year’s annual Holt Festival guarantees to be another roaring success. We paid a visit to the pretty Georgian market town ahead of the festival launch. Turn to page 23 to find out more about where to stay, where to shop, and where to dine, of course. Nestling on the outskirts of town, Natural Surroundings visitor centre offers a wonderful day-out with beautiful gardens to explore, enchanting walks, on-site shop, and welcoming tea rooms. Reporter Thomas Dick expounds its many virtues on page 21. And that’s not forgetting our regular fashion feature (p49), motoring review (p53), and mustread interview with leading lady Natasha J Barnes starring in Funny Girl, coming soon to Norwich Theatre Royal (p56)… Check it out! Enjoy the issue.

WHAT’S NEW?

MEET LOIS! Personal stylist (and Norfolk On My Mind columnist) Sarah Morgan has opened a new ladies boutique dress agency near Norwich. Lois Reloved is at White House Barns, Sprowston, stocking excellent quality, once-loved modern clothes and accessories on a 50:50 commission basis. From discarded designer gems to high street fashions you have never worn, you can sell those garments you no longer adore, or spoil yourself with something new that doesn’t cost the earth! Sarah said, “Lois Reloved embodies everything I believe in, especially ‘letting go’ of things we no longer use. Most women have clothes they don’t wear or have never worn. It is better to let someone else enjoy them and recoup some of the original cost.” Lois Reloved will also be a base for one-to-one consultations and style and colour workshops. GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN Cinema City in Norwich is hosting a special season of films in tribute to its legendary late patron Sir John Hurt’s remarkable acting talents. This will also include two films that he greatly admired, Jules et Jim and Kind Hearts and Coronets, which Sir John curated as part of a ‘Sir John Presents’ season, complete with personal filmed introductions. Film played a major role in Sir John’s life, and he firmly believed in the power of the moving image to educate, inspire and improve people’s lives, supporting the works of Cinema City Education. Guy Martin, manager of Cinema City Education, said, “What struck us most in the time we knew Sir John was his seemingly boundless enthusiasm and his immense generosity with his time. He was a great advocate for the charitable work we do, and his passion for film was something to behold.”

oulful-voiced pop icon and multi-million selling artist, Rick Astley, has had a lot to celebrate in recent months. With his first number one album in 29 years, titled ‘50’, the Brit Award winning singer has pulled off one of pop’s most remarkable comebacks. ‘50’ has gone gold and has been well-received by fans and critics alike, with singles ‘Keep Singing’ and ‘Angels On My Side’ dominating the airwaves and raking in nearly 1.8m views on Vevo and over 600,000 streams on Spotify. Rick was just 21 years old when he unleashed the iconic ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ – few debut singles have had the same impact. It became the UK’s biggest selling single of the year, going on to hit number one in 16 countries. The song became the centrepiece of debut album ‘Whenever You Need Somebody’, which sold an astonishing 15 million copies worldwide, cracking the US Top 10 in the process. Holding the distinction of being the first male solo artist to see his first eight singles reach the UK Top 10, the hits continued with ‘Together Forever’, ‘She Wants To Dance With Me’, ‘Take Me To Your Heart’, ‘Hold Me In Your Arms’ and ‘Cry For Help’.

Commenting on the forthcoming gig, Rick said, “I’m going to be singing some old hits for you and also some new songs from the new album. Come and see me in a beautiful setting.” He added, “2017 sees me celebrating 30 years in the music business since my first number one hit. I can’t wait to perform as a part of Forest Live and I really hope you can enjoy the experience with me. I’m so super-excited. Come and see me in a forest!”

HIDDEN GEM Written by Thomas Dick

Feature writer Thomas Dick shares one of his favourite North Norfolk visitor attractions, Natural Surroundings near Holt.

A

s a Norfolk resident of many years standing, I only discovered the enchanted gardens of Natural Surroundings about six months ago, despite the fact that they are just a 10-minute drive from my home. Situated on the Bayfield Estate in the stunningly beautiful and tranquil Glaven Valley, they are run by Anne and Simon Harrap (one or both are usually present for advice), offering the perfect day-out for families or individuals. Parking is free and the pathways around the car parking area are perfect for dog walking on a lead (Sunday mornings are particularly popular). However, a short walk away is the entrance to Natural Surroundings, with its wonderful nature reserve with signposted walks, picturesque café and gift shop. In the summer, you can sit outside and marvel at the beauty of the flower-filled tea garden, gazing at

20

Issue 57

the action-packed bird feeders. Regular visitors to these include nuthatches, marsh tits and great spotted woodpeckers. What better way to relax with a cup of coffee in hand? There’s also a wide selection of cakes and homemade snacks, making it an excellent destination for refreshments. After refreshing yourself in the café, it is time to venture further and explore the nature reserve itself, five acres of unspoilt but carefully tended natural landscape (which is surprisingly hilly considering the reputation of Norfolk as being very flat). There is a range of different mini-habitats to discover including

wildlife, kitchen, woodland, orchard, butterfly, bee, herb, pond and reptile refuge gardens. All areas are planted with wildflowers from Britain and aim to demonstrate that gardens can be both full of colour and full of wildlife. Plus, you will encounter many new ways of tempting wildlife into your own garden, whether it’s in the town or countryside. Having been inspired by the real-life gardens, a visit to the plant shop will provide you with a choice of cottage garden favourites and native wild flowers, together with unusual perennials. Should you have a large plot of land, bulk purchases of wild flower seeds are available, and unlike your average garden

office@norfolkonmymind.co.uk

centre, the plants here are chosen to be wildlife-friendly, attracting bees, butterflies, birds and even bats to your garden. For the more adventurous, a ramble through the five-acre reserve is highly recommended. There is a network of paths, boardwalks and a riverside hide, giving free access to all areas with plenty of places where you can simply sit down and escape the stresses of modern life, drinking in the views and listening to the birdsong. There are currently active plans to reintroduce water voles, an endangered species, to the banks of the River Glaven… See if you can spot one!

“NATURAL SURROUNDINGS’ MISSION IS TO PROMOTE WILDLIFE-FRIENDLY GARDENING AND BRITISH WILDLIFE” A constant source of interest is the breeding programme of harvest mice, which can be seen in the barn. These little animals are not yet critically endangered, but intervention has to be taken to reduce the risk. The harvest mouse is the smallest British mouse and lives exclusively outdoors. It is tiny, weighing 4g or less, and feeds mainly on grass, cereal seeds or insects, supplementing its diet with fruit and nectar. Natural Surroundings’ mission is to promote wildlife-friendly gardening and British wildlife. If you would like to support this fantastic cause, do pay them a visit. If the comments on TripAdvisor are anything to go by, it would be definitely worth your while. ON THE DOORSTEP The village of Glandford nearby was totally restored by a previous owner of Bayfield Hall,

Sir Alfred Jodrell, in order to provide better living conditions for his workers. Sir Arthur was renowned for his generosity, and he funded entirely the rebuilding of St Martin’s church, which includes a pew once occupied by Sir Arthur himself and stained glass made in the workshops of Kempe and Bryans (the best known stained glass studios of their day). Next door to the church is the Shell Museum, which is the oldest purpose-built museum in Norfolk, built by Sir Arthur to house his personal collection of shells. Here you will find an amazing array of beautiful seashells, together with fossils, birds’ eggs, agate ware and local archaeological finds.

ABOUT

H

olt is a fine example of 18th century Georgian architecture, dating back to the town’s rebuilding following the Great Fire, making it one of the most attractive places to visit in the county, surrounded by parkland and close to the coast. It boasts some of the best independent shops for miles, whether you wish to purchase art, the latest fashions, or unique one-of-a-kind antiques, as well as offering a host of places to eat, drink and unwind. A visit to Holt is not complete without a stroll down the high street and a wander around the hidden courtyards and alleyways, tucked away from the main action. The summer is a very busy time of year, attracting tourists and locals keen to soak up the relaxed atmosphere with a cup of coffee (or something stronger!) alfresco.

WHERE TO EAT

H

olt is well-known for its thriving café scene. There are so many delightful coffee shops serving hot drinks, homemade cakes and light bites, each in its own special way. If you take your coffee seriously, then The Black Apollo Coffee House is for you, where coffee-making becomes a fine art. Or, perhaps you prefer a traditional vintage feel? The Folly Tearoom in Hoppers Yard is a magical setting for afternoon tea, tucked away in its own little corner where magic really does happen! That’s not forgetting Williams @ Number Twenty Eight, Horatio’s and The Barn Café and Bistro. Plus, if you’re in the market for takeaway, Taste of India prides itself on the finest Indian cuisine in North Norfolk, while Albert Street Fish Bar has built up an enviable reputation for its good, old-fashioned fish and chips.

WHERE TO SHOP

WHERE TO STAY

H

otel, B&B or holiday cottage? The options are endless. The Lawns Hotel is a privately-owned hotel blessed with 10 comfortable en suite bedrooms overlooking the southfacing gardens or playing fields of Gresham’s School. An ideal place to relax, the bar is open all day for drinks at your own leisure. Known for its ‘posh B&B’, Byfords provides rooms and self-catering accommodation in a landmark location in the centre of town. There’s no better way to start your day than the famous Byfords breakfast, whether it’s a full English, eggs benedict, or breakfast pizza you crave. If the idea of a pub stay appeals, then check out The Feathers, The King’s Head or The Pigs on the outskirts of Holt, offering a more relaxed vibe. Or, perhaps a country cabin is up your street? Experience the unique environment of nearby Kelling Heath, with its woodland lodges and luxury holiday homes available for short breaks and weekly stays, guaranteed to make you leave feeling refreshed.

utcher, baker, candlestick maker… Holt has got it all! Bakers and Larners is a department store with a difference. The Fortnum and Mason of North Norfolk, it has been delivering exceptional service since 1770, from food and wine, to home and garden products, as well as fashion, beauty, gifts and a fabulous restaurant. Speaking of fashion, if it’s ladies clothing you’re after, be sure to pay a visit to Nicholsons, Francois Bouttier, Nelle and Turnaround, where you’ll find nearly-new clothes and accessories at a fraction of the original price-tag! As for art and antiques, take your pick… There’s Bircham Gallery, Picturecraft, Adrian Hill, The Red Dot Gallery and The Photographers’ Gallery to name a few. An art aficionado’s heaven! And if you fancy unleashing your inner artist, you will have lots of fun creating your own crafty items to treasure forever at Doodle Pots in New Street. BRANCASTER

HUNSTANTON Sunny Hunny is a gently sloping beach with a mix of sand and pebbles. It is the only coastal town in East Anglia that faces west, making the beach relatively sheltered from sea breezes. Great for families, there are plenty of activities to keep you busy, from traditional donkey rides and boat trips, to surfing and walks along the famous Hunstanton cliffs.

This expansive stretch of flat, golden sand is a favourite all year-round. Rich in wildlife, it’s a Designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and you can see why! The miles of unspoilt beach are ideal for sandcastle building, paddling in the shallow lagoons, as well as dog walking. Be sure to quench your thirst with a stop-off at The Ship Hotel in the village.

HOLKHAM Made famous by the film Shakespeare In Love when actress Gwyneth Paltrow walks across the sand at low tide during the closing scenes, Holkham beach is said to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the whole of the UK. Horseshoe-shaped, it is sheltered by a pine forest, and the yellow sands are so vast that when the tide is out, you get a real feeling of space.

28

WELLS-NEXT-THE-SEA Fantastic views, fish and chips, and the iconic, brightly-coloured beach huts make Wells a popular holiday destination throughout the year. The beach, a mile from the centre of town, is served by the Wells Harbour Railway, a 10 and a quarter gauge railway, which the kids will just love! There’s also the Beach Café here, serving light bites, snacks, drinks and ice creams. Don’t forget to go aboard the Albatros before you leave! One of the oldest sailing ships still afloat, it’s now a B&B, bar, restaurant and live music venue.

SHERINGHAM

CROMER

MUNDESLEY

An old-fashioned seaside town at heart, Sheringham is the perfect place to recharge your batteries, whether soaking up the salt spray, taking a steam train ride to nearby Weybourne, or indulging in a show at the much-loved Little Theatre. Among the glories of the area are the surrounding woodlands of Sheringham Park, with views out to sea, and bracken-covered undulating uplands, covered with golden gorse and purple heather.

Home of the Cromer crab, if you fancy some sea air, summer entertainment and a spot of crabbing, Cromer offers a wonderful family day-out. With plenty of traditional seaside attractions available, the beach is well-managed with lifeguards on patrol in summer. The pier is well-worth a stroll along, while tucking into a bag of chips from celebrity chef Galton Blackiston’s restaurant and takeaway, No. 1 Cromer.

Mundesley has a sheltered beach with lots of golden sand exposed at low tide, backed by low grassy cliffs and a promenade lined with colourful beach huts. The charming, well-preserved seaside town is a small, familyfriendly holiday spot, often considered one of Norfolk’s best-kept secrets. The village has its roots in the Victorian times when visitors came by rail to sample the fresh air and exceptional service of seaside hotels such as The Royal.

SEA PALLING A blue-flag stretch of beach that’s usually not too overcrowded, Sea Palling is the result of nine offshore reefs forming part of a flood defence scheme, which helps calm the water, making it good for swimmers, jet-skiers, canoeists and windsurfers. What’s more, this little seaside resort has plenty of the facilities of much larger ones, including a pub, café, shop and small amusement arcade.

WINTERTON-ON-SEA Mile upon mile of pale, sandy beach stretching into the distance, Winterton-on-Sea is just the place to escape from it all. Grey seals can regularly be seen basking on the beach or popping up their heads in the water. A visit is not complete without a hot toddy in the Dunes Beach Café, with attractive outside huts for those with four-legged friends in tow.

GREAT YARMOUTH Kiss-me-quick hats, the Pleasure Beach and crazy golf make Great Yarmouth a go-to for those seeking a traditional seaside resort. The wide, clean beach and waters are perfect for bathers, lazing away those warm, summer days. The focal points on the seafront, however, are its two piers; the Britannia Pier, standing proudly above the beach, and the Wellington Pier, located towards the southern end of the strip. OFF THE WALL

LOST AND FOUND Written by David Morris

Photographer David Morris goes on a walk down memory lane.

A

s a callow and quite useless young art student, I took a roll of Kodak film and photographed the River Hull. This was in 1971. The trendy thing then for photographers was to do crazy angles in the manner of David Hemmings. Fortunately, I was so concerned with getting the light reading and focusing right that I didn’t bother with any of that; I kept it straight and traditional. My old lecturer thought they were OK for a beginner, nothing to shout about. Now, 40 years later, they are on show at Hull International Photography Gallery and are viewed in an entirely

different light. I’d somehow managed to turn the muddy old River Hull into some kind of Venice of the North. The river now is cleaned up, antiseptic, sanitised. For me, and I think many others, it’s devoid of the grime of a working river that gave it such character and atmosphere. And, of course, all the barges have gone; we now live in a different world. This got me thinking… What happens to all those photographs we have stored away, either as film negatives in shoe boxes in the loft, or those thousands of digital images filed away on our computers and iPhones? Photographs that we once were so keen to look at, and now will never ever view again. Why do we dismiss images

“I THINK THE MAIN REASON WE DON’T PROPERLY VALUE THE PHOTOGRAPHS WE HAVE TAKEN IS JUST THE SHEER VOLUME OF IMAGES WE PRODUCE”

Barge Crowded Waters

we were once desperate to take in such a cavalier manner? Well, part of it, like my photographs of Hull, is that the scene is so familiar, so every day, that it’s deemed boring. Only with the passage of time do the images become more interesting. Then there are the images that just create some kind of blind spot in us; we can’t see either the potential or the reality of what is in front of us. I took ‘The Waiter In White’ for my Barlife series at Café Florian, Venice, and absolutely hated the fact that the young woman has what I take to be chips on her plate. It took me a few years to realise I ought to print up the image. And when I did, everyone loved it – and no one noticed the chips, or even the plate!

Going Forward

‘Going forward’ is one of my early images from when we came to live in Norfolk, and one that I thought had no merit. I had followed these deer into the mist, convinced that if they just turned around, I would have an award-winning shot. Of course, they didn’t, and I nearly consigned the image to the dustbin. Desperate for some new work, I searched through some old files and it was one of the most popular images at a recent exhibition. I think the main reason we don’t properly value the photographs we have taken is just the sheer volume of images we produce. No one can keep up with it all. To go through them in detail and then drag them out for second viewings would drive us all nuts. It’s a shame because you can bet your bottom dollar there are gems out there, moldering away in shoeboxes in attics or slowly corrupting on disused hard drives.

LAZY DAYS Written by Harry Farrow @HarryFarrowChef

Chef Harry Farrow will be spending his rare time-off out in the open.

A

s soon as the sun comes out, there’s nothing more relaxing than a refreshing glass of wine alfresco. We are lucky to have great outdoor seating areas at both The Hero and The Anchor Inn, whether it’s a glass of Provence rosé in a sheltered spot overlooking the quay at Burnham Overy, or a pint of Woodforde’s Wherry in the nautical-themed beer garden at Morston, which is a little suntrap in the summer months. One of our most popular summer cocktails is Norwichbased brewery Bullards’ strawberry and black pepper gin, mixed with Prosecco, to make a longer drink. It’s so delicious, even I’m a fan!

34

Issue 57

When it comes to the summer menu, it’s all about fresh seafood, local oysters, seasonal salads and Willie Weston of The Fish Shop in Blakeney’s mouth-watering flaky crab – it’s the best I’ve ever tasted. I also love cooking (and eating!) juicy lobster grilled in garlic butter using my fantastic Big Green Egg barbecue. It is the business! And as for adding some colour to your plate, you can’t beat Roger Crane of Wood Farm near Aylsham’s gorgeous green asparagus. What’s more, samphire, the salty veg of the sea, is back in season. You can’t get more Norfolk than a bundle of this super-tasty sea vegetable!

Weekends are extremely popular, but we usually have availability midweek, so why not enjoy a short break by the coast? Each of our light and airy bedrooms boasts stunning views, comfortable surroundings and king-size beds with fine Egyptian cotton sheets, promising a cosy night’s sleep. Popular with walkers, bird-watchers, couples, those visiting family, and young professionals, our prices include a fresh, home-cooked breakfast, served from 8.30am to 11am. What better way to gear you up for a walk along the scenic coastal path from Burnham Overy to Wells-next-the-Sea? Or, perhaps you’d prefer to rest your legs and hop on the Coasthopper bus to hit the beach at Cromer? Famous for its crab and lobster, be sure to stop off at Rocky Bottoms seafood canteen in East Runton. It has a really nice vibe, and you can either eat in or take away.

The Anchor Inn is open from 9am until 11pm daily, serving food from 12-3pm and 6-9pm. We serve high quality local fish, game, meats and vegetables, cooked to perfection.

GREEN SOUP WITH A POACHED HEN’S EGG AND RAPESEED OIL INGREDIENTS 200g greens (washed and roughly chopped) 50g spinach (washed and roughly chopped) 80g ice water 400g chicken stock 10g garlic oil Pinch of curry powder Salt and pepper (to taste) Rapeseed oil

METHOD Place a large pan of water onto a high heat and bring to the boil. Add a pinch of salt to the water.

Bring to the boil, then turn down the heat to allow the water to gently bubble.

Add the greens and spinach, and cook until almost a mush.

Using a spoon, stir the water clockwise, crack your eggs, and slowly add the eggs to the middle of the pan. Cook for about 3-4 minutes until your eggs are just cooked.

Remove from the water and cover with the ice, then transfer it all into a blender and blend until smooth. Taste for the seasoning and place to one side.

To advertise call 01953 456789

Remove from the water and allow to cool a little.

This will keep for up to 3 days. When ready to serve, place on a low heat. Do not boil as you will lose the fresh colour. Once warm, check for seasoning again.

To serve, fill your bowls with the soup, add the warm egg to the middle, and top with a good twist of white pepper.

For the egg, place a small pan on a high heat with a good splash of vinegar.

Spoon over a little rapeseed oil, and serve with warm sourdough bread and hand-churned butter.

aid to originate from India, from the word ‘bangla’ (meaning a low, thatched house), bungalows soared in popularity in the UK in the 1930s and 40s, and were always fashionable as retirement homes in seaside resorts. They are now in demand by a growing elderly population, but fewer bungalows are being built, as they are not an economic use of land. The trend is for open-plan living nowadays – no separate dining room with table, chairs, sideboard and hostess trolley for entertaining. A report in 2008 predicted there would be no dining rooms left by 2020! There was also the ‘front’ room kept immaculate and only used for special

occasions, whilst the family squashed into the smaller daily living room. The change came when we started knocking through the living room to the dining room with an arch, and DIY superstores sprang up to tempt us with a new way of life. Now the ground floor is often one big area with the kitchen flowing into the living space, maybe with a separate snug, study or TV room, with bedrooms and bathrooms leading off, and a family can be doing different activities in one large space, whether cooking, eating, or sitting on the sofa with an iPad. Without the need to negotiate stairs, this layout often offers panoramic views from the large windows, perhaps with bi-fold doors leading to the garden or patio area.

These modern architect-designed properties, however, are seldom called bungalows. They are single-storey houses, or barn or stable block conversions, which is thought to sound so much more appealing!

GREEN FINGERS

STRAWBERRY TIME… AGAIN! Sue Huckle of Posh Plants says customers cannot resist her delicious juicy strawberries. Written by Sue Huckle

S

ummer is around the corner. We’ve had some lovely warm days, but we’ve also had some cold nights with late frosts, not good for the abundance of blossom on the pear trees… Fingers crossed we’ll get lots of fruit! This year, more than any other, I’ve been brought down to earth with a jolt. I usually live life at a rate of knots, but just in the last few months, an unexpected illness put my partner in hospital. He’s home now and on the mend, but it turned my life upside down. I’ve been reminded not to take anything for granted and to appreciate the best things in life. Summer is a beautiful season with colours everywhere that amaze me, from pretty pink flowers to the greenest of greens. Brush past an acer or beech branch, and the

leaves are so perfect and soft that you will hardly feel them on your skin. And once again, it’s strawberry time! The strawberry tunnel is a place of sanctuary. Warm and sheltered, it’s perfect for bees. Large bumble bees are fascinating, as they journey from flower to flower, and then drink condensation from the underside of the tunnel cover. We keep the tunnel closed up at night for warmth. So, one of the first jobs of the day is to open the doors, and the smell inside is so fresh and earthy. Just wonderful! We planted the strawberries early this year, so, they had a good start and were ready for sale at the beginning of May. Job satisfaction doesn’t get any better than working in the nursery with

the warmth of the sun on your face. Customers buying plants cannot resist the strawberries, usually returning from their car to buy a second punnet after eating them and commenting, “These are the best strawberries I’ve ever tasted!” Here at Seven Acres Nursery, as well as our range of topiary, we have seasonal vegetable and garden plants, shrubs, perennials, pots and planters, plus that’s not forgetting, of course, our delicious freshly-picked strawberries! Enjoy! Posh Plants is at Seven Acres Nursery, Common Road, East Tuddenham, Norfolk NR20 3NF. For further information, call 07703 347014 or visit www.poshplants.com

BOOK REVIEW

Norfolk On My Mind owner, Jonathan Horswell, turns the tables on writer Pete Goodrum to interview him about his new book.

42

So, this is a bit different, Pete – you’re the one being interviewed. It’s usually the other way round! A. I know! It does feel rather odd. Off you go!

Q.Your work on the TV series must have helped though. A. It did. Needless to say, some of the ‘gems’ I’d visited for the TV series found their way into the book.

Q. What made you write this book, after your previous rather more historicallydriven ones? A. It was an odd coincidence. As you know, I write and present the Mustard TV series, Norfolk’s Hidden Gems. My publishers asked me to write a book called ’50 Gems of Norfolk’, and initially, I was, to be honest, a bit confused. I thought there must be some sort of link. It turned out to be a happy coincidence.

Q. Other than those, how did you go about choosing your 50 Gems? A. It wasn’t easy! There’s so much to love about Norfolk. It was difficult to refine the choice down to just 50!

Issue 57

Peter Goodrum (left) with Jonathan Horswell (right)

Q.You seem to have covered quite a range of places. A. I have. I wanted it to be wide-ranging to reflect the sheer variety of the county. So, I’ve chosen some towns and villages, and

office@norfolkonmymind.co.uk

50 Gems of Norfolk by Pete Goodrum is published by Amberley Books, priced £14.99 (paperback), available in all good bookstores.

covered some aspects of Norwich, but I’ve also selected some intangible things – like the Norfolk accent, for instance, and some people who I think are important to Norfolk and its history. Q.You say in the introduction that it’s a ‘personal’ selection. A. I do. And I really wanted to make that point. As I was saying earlier, there’s so much to choose from, and it would be impossible to make a definitive choice, so it’s my selection. And I’ve featured the 50 Gems alphabetically – as far as possible – to be fair about it.

To advertise call 01953 456789

Q. The book really does underline how much you love Norfolk. A. Thank you! I’m glad that comes through. I do love Norwich and Norfolk. It’s my home, it’s where I’m from. There so much that’s interesting about our history, and so much that goes on here now. I want the book to be attractive to locals, as well as visitors. Q. I think you’ve achieved that! I was amused to see that you included Jack Valentine! A. Ha! I decided on him very early in the

process. He appears to be genuinely, uniquely, ‘Norfolk’. And in a way, that’s what the book is about. Things and places that make Norfolk unique. Because it is! Q. I share your enthusiasm. And I know your readers will. A. Thanks. I appreciate that. What’s it like being the interviewer? Q. It’s been a pleasure. But shall we change places again now? A. Fair enough. I’ve got a column to write!

here are some fashion trends I pray never come back… Mullet haircuts, low-slung jeans, toeless boots and mini-skirt kilts, for example.

Others are more welcome, and this summer’s oldie-but-goodie has been in and out of fashion more times than I care to remember, but I’m always relieved when it makes a reappearance. Ladies, you can breathe a sigh of relief… The wrap dress is back (again). Ever since Diane Von Furstenberg launched her iconic knitted jersey wrap dress in 1974, women have embraced this style, and it resurfaces at least every 10 years.

If you have a bit of a tum, look for wrap dresses with ruching at the side. And if the dress has a belt, tie it at the side, not on your tummy. What has changed is the way this dream dress is being worn. This time, it’s a little bit longer – under the knee – and can be ‘funked up’ by wearing it over cropped flared jeans with a frayed hem. Great for days when summer can’t decide if it’s coming or going! Plus, it looks equally good with wedges for day, or heels and a hat for a wedding, so be inspired to make it work for you.

“OF ANY DRESS SHAPE, IT’S THE ONE THAT FLATTERS MOST FIGURES”

Long Sleeve Pink wrap front dress, £38, at Wallis

There’s a reason DVF became one of the richest women in the fashion industry; this look is a perennial winner. Of any dress shape, it’s the one that flatters most figures, morphs from day to night effortlessly, and actually looks better if you have a few curves. It can be worn to work, a night-out, a special occasion – and this season, thrown on over jeans and sneakers. The wrap dress is often made of forgiving fabric that travels well and doesn’t crease. And the best bit? It usually has sleeves! Women with bigger boobs will knows its shapeenhancing properties. The V-neck is so flattering, and if you’re a glorious hourglass shape or have heavy thighs, it really comes into its own. The A-line or flared skirt looks better filled with curves, and feels wonderfully light and flirty for summer. Remarkably, a slimmer-skirted wrap also suits women with a slightly thick waist, giving the impression of a waistline that doesn’t exist.

I

quite like this car. It feels well built, the driving position is good, and the load area is massive. There’s one drawback, though. It’s ugly. Yes, I know, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but the appearance of a car really does matter. After all, any new motor these days costs a fair proportion of your monthly income, so you might as well buy a car you’re pleased to look at. I’m not saying the Civic Tourer looks like a bulldog chewing a wasp. Its face is fine – hardly any different to the standard Civic hatch – it’s just that things go horribly ‘Pete Tong’ the further back you go. The backside of the car looks like it belongs to another ride. It’s ungainly and has no flair. Yet, I can see why the Japanese auto-maker has made the Civic Tourer the way it is. The shape of the rear ensures a wide, low boot, making it easy to load up anything. For instance, lifting my tot’s buggy into the boot took no effort at all. In fact, I could hardly describe it as ‘lifting’, as the lip is so handily near to the ground. And that, apart from the obvious practical aspect, is a positive tick in the Civic Tourer’s To advertise call 01953 456789

box. Viewed from the side, the vehicle is low-slung and almost sleek. It is, undoubtedly, the best angle to observe the car. And that’s a shame because you want the back to look good too, and because it doesn’t, it’s frustrating. Inside, the seats are supportive and the instrumentation is clear and intuitive to use. There’s a lot of legroom up front, and enough for two six-footers in the back seats. The same goes for headroom, which is weird, considering how squat the car looks on the outside. Clever stuff, Honda. In 1.6 diesel guise, as tested here, the Tourer is smooth, pithy and extremely frugal. The steering feels a little artificially weighted, but the Civic is planted on motorways. As for A-roads or twisty country routes, the car is eager and willing to grip hard on corners. What’s more, a six-speed manual gearbox makes the most of the clout on tap, thanks to a clear-cut shift action. Numbers-wise, the oil-burner will do zero to 62mph in 10.5 seconds and its top speed is 121mph. The on-paper

figures don’t do the Tourer justice, however – the power and torque delivery makes it feel much faster. The Civic comes really well-equipped too. Even though I tested the all-singing-alldancing EX Plus flagship model with leather seats, sat-nav, 17-inch wheels and xenon lights, all Tourers come kitted out as standard with Bluetooth and digital DAB radio. The Civic Tourer’s price-tag, especially in EX Plus flagship guise (£26,200), means the Honda will be a fairly costly company car choice. However, the diesel’s tank just keeps on giving (you can get up to 800 miles out of it), and the car returns 72.4mpg on average, emitting just 103g/km of CO2. If you can live with its ugly rear booty, then another reason to go for the Civic in estate form is its bullet-proof reliability. The Japanese-owned company has a welldeserved reputation for making cars that stand the test of time. Furthermore, the Civic Tourer is actually built at Honda’s UK factory in Swindon, so you’ll also be able to wave the flag for British motor-manufacturing. www.norfolkonmymind.co.uk

THEATRE TIME

“I HAVE NEVER BEEN TO NORWICH, BUT I’M REALLY EXCITED TO EXPLORE A LITTLE OF IT WHILE I AM THERE” – Natasha J Barnes

FUNNY GIRL It made Barbra Streisand’s name, was re-invented by Sheridan Smith, and is one of the most highly sought-after roles in musical theatre. Taking on Fanny Brice when Funny Girl comes to Norwich this summer, Natasha J Barnes tells us more. How long have you been acting and singing? Did you start as a child? A. I grew up on Disney films and old musical movies. My favourites were Funny Girl and Calamity Jane, so I always had an ear for the older sounds. I started at five in a local drama club on a Thursday night. Q. What do you like about the character of Fanny Brice? A. I never, ever thought I would play her... I’m a short blonde girl from the English countryside, and she is a hard-nosed Brooklyn Jew. I suppose the fact that, in her bones, she sticks out from the crowd, and I never felt like I fitted in at school. We do have certain things in common! Q. What is it like to sing those iconic Barbra Streisand numbers and have there been any particular challenges? A. The challenge was stripping away the memory of all the different versions she had

created through her music career. It was about going back to the way the music was originally written. Q. How did you feel as the understudy when you stepped in for Sheridan Smith in the role last March? A. Obviously you are playing to an audience who booked to see a particular person, so there is an added pressure, but the role is so big that you really can lose yourself in the show. Q. How did you feel when you were told you would be taking on the role in your own right for parts of the tour? A. It was a wonderful feeling. I wasn’t finished exploring the part, even after I did over 100 shows in the West End. To play her in my own right is something I’m very grateful for.

Q. Did you enjoy being in panto at The Palladium? What was it like to work alongside such an eclectic celebrity cast as Julian Clary, Paul O’Grady, Nigel Havers and Amanda Holden? A. I loved it! It was the first proper panto I have ever done, and to be part of the first pantomime at The Palladium in 30 years was incredible, especially alongside such variety veterans. The dresses were huge in the show for when Cinderella goes to the ball. I managed to complete the run with only one fall, which was onto my back, and the ballgown fell up around my head. I was at the front of the stage, unable to get up alone. I think the 2,000 audience members probably won’t forget that in a hurry!

Q. Have you toured before? A. I have never toured before! I am really looking forward to living out of a suitcase for a while! Q. Have you been to Norwich and do you have any links to the region? A. I have never been to Norwich, but I’m really excited to explore a little of it while I am there.

Funny Girl is at Norwich Theatre Royal from Monday 26th June to Saturday 1st July. For further information, call the box office on 01603 630000 or visit www.theatreroyalnorwich.co.uk
